AI can’t do your job

If you pay attention to the hype, you'd think that all the action on "AI" (an incoherent grab-bag of only marginally related technologies) was in generating text and images. Man, is that ever wrong. The AI hype machine could put every commercial illustrator alive on the breadline and the savings wouldn't pay the kombucha budget for the million-dollar-a-year techies who oversaw Dall-E's training run. The commercial market for automated email summaries is likewise infinitesimal.

The fact that CEOs overestimate the size of this market is easy to understand, since "CEO" is the most laptop job of all laptop jobs. Having a chatbot summarize the boss's email is the 2025 equivalent of the 2000s gag about the boss whose secretary printed out the boss's email and put it in his in-tray so he could go over it with a red pen and then dictate his reply.

The smart AI money is long on "decision support," whereby a statistical inference engine suggests to a human being what decision they should make. There's bots that are supposed to diagnose tumors, bots that are supposed to make neutral bail and parole decisions, bots that are supposed to evaluate student essays, resumes and loan applications.

The narrative around these bots is that they are there to help humans. In this story, the hospital buys a radiology bot that offers a second opinion to the human radiologist. If they disagree, the human radiologist takes another look. In this tale, AI is a way for hospitals to make fewer mistakes by spending more money. An AI assisted radiologist is less productive (because they re-run some x-rays to resolve disagreements with the bot) but more accurate.

In automation theory jargon, this radiologist is a "centaur" – a human head grafted onto the tireless, ever-vigilant body of a robot

Of course, no one who invests in an AI company expects this to happen. Instead, they want reverse-centaurs: a human who acts as an assistant to a robot. The real pitch to hospital is, "Fire all but one of your radiologists and then put that poor bastard to work reviewing the judgments our robot makes at machine scale."

No one seriously thinks that the reverse-centaur radiologist will be able to maintain perfect vigilance over long shifts of supervising automated process that rarely go wrong, but when they do, the error must be caught:

This is bad enough when we're talking about radiology, but it's even worse in government contexts, where the bots are deciding who gets Medicare, who gets food stamps, who gets VA benefits, who gets a visa, who gets indicted, who gets bail, and who gets parole.

That's because statistical inference is intrinsically conservative: an AI predicts the future by looking at its data about the past, and when that prediction is also an automated decision, fed to a Chaplinesque reverse-centaur trying to keep pace with a torrent of machine judgments, the prediction becomes a directive, and thus a self-fulfilling prophecy:

By firing skilled human workers and replacing them with spicy autocomplete, Musk is assuming his final form as both the kind of boss who can be conned into replacing you with a defective chatbot and as the fast-talking sales rep who cons your boss. Musk is transforming key government functions into high-speed error-generating machines whose human minders are only the payroll to take the fall for the coming tsunami of robot fuckups.

2024 took away many travel opportunities from me. i was supposed to go to barcelona with my family, but my grandfather passed away, and we stayed in italy to handle the funeral. i was supposed to travel to sofia with my cousin, but one of my exams was rescheduled to a date i couldn’t possibly miss, so i had to give up the trip. lastly, i was planning to go to valencia to celebrate my birthday, but a flood disrupted the city, and i couldn't go anymore.

in short, it was a frustrating year in this regard — i lost a lot of money and, most importantly, many opportunities to travel, which i believe has significantly inhibited me in this area. while i used to be much more inclined to book last-minute trips when the chance to travel on a budget arose, now i feel much more anxious about doing so.

i want 2025 to be filled with travels. i want to fully take advantage of the opportunities that circumstances beyond my control stole from me in 2024.

𝟮. keep my life even more private ( 🔒 )

it's been years now since i completely disappeared from social media. i no longer post photos or updates about my life online as if i were an influencer, and my daily life has significantly improved without the pressure to appear a certain way online. life is truly better when no one knows anything about you.

however, in real life, i'm quite the chatterbox, and i often find myself oversharing without even realizing it. that said, because i strongly believe in the evil eye, i've learned that, even if i have to bite my tongue, i can't share projects that are not yet completed — not even with the people closest to me, not even if i'm 100% sure they would be happy for me.

in fact, even though i cut off toxic people from my life two years ago, other friendships i thought were strong have ended this year. i want to live a peaceful, private life, even if that means staying silent. show results rather than plans.

two years ago, i cut ties with many toxic friendships that were holding me down and keeping me from healing. since then, i've been mostly alone, except for a few surviving connections i kept after high school. when i started university, i made new friendships, but they were very superficial and always centered around university matters.

however, since moving to spain, i've really understood which people were just taking from me without truly being interested in me as a person. in return, though, these past few months i've met some truly amazing girls in madrid, and i want to let myself indulge in that beautiful feminine energy that only girl friendships can give. wine and cheese in front of an episode of gilmore girls while you cut out pictures for your vision board.

𝟱. eat healthier ( 🥗 )

these past few months have been a rollercoaster with food. i've prepared a lot of homemade meals, but i've also ordered out quite often. i don't see anything wrong with ordering takeout or eating out with friends, but since it often happened when i was alone and didn't feel like cooking, i want to try to organize my cooking better and eat as many homemade meals as possible. of course, i won’t deprive myself of lunches and dinners out with friends, but i want to limit takeaway food to social occasions, not to lonely sundays.

it's been less than two years since i got out my ed and i want to keep the happy and healthy relationship with food i gained with so much hard work.

𝟲. keeping up with goals reached last year ( ☁️ )

obviously, all the work i’ve done over the past few years won’t go to waste! i want to persevere with the good habits i’ve developed and the work i’ve done on myself. the past few years have been strange and full of changes, but i feel like it’s all been positive. i’m happy with where i’ve gotten to and the person i’ve become, but i know i still have a long way ahead of me.

Interesting facts about today's federal election in Germany

After the coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP collapsed last November due to a lack of common policy ideas, fundamental disagreements over the general idea of the role of the state, and how to fund the Federal budget of 2025, the election was moved forward to February 23, 2025 from its original scheduled date in September.

Thus, the campaign was unusually short. The campaign was dominated by only two major topics, immigration and economy. Other pressing issues on geopolitics and environmental policies played no major role.

Four parties proclaimed Chancellor candidates, more than in any other election in the history of post-war Germany, although only two candidates have e realistic chance to be elected as Chancellor by the next Bundestag (the lower chamber of parliament). One party, the CDU, is leading by a wide margin, so it is very probable that their Chancellor candidate, Friedrich Merz, will be the next Chancellor of Germany.

The "relegation battle" of the parties who are struggling to make the 5 % of votes necessary to send delegates to the parliament, is particularly suspenseful this time. Three parties are hoping to make it, among them the economic-liberal FDP, the newly formed left-populist BSW, having split from the Left Party only months ago, and the Left Party itself, having the best chances after an uptick in the polls during the last days.

59.2 million German citizens living in Germany are eligible to vote, plus an unidentified number of Germans living abroad. Those living in Germany are automatically registered to vote, those living abroad generally have to register themselves. Because of the short period between the breakup of the coalitions and the snap elections, many Germans living abroad face the possibility that their vote will not count due to postal delays.

2.3 million citizens are first voters, mistly because they have turned 18 since the las election. 23.2 % of the voters is over 70, more than 40 % are over 60 years old. Only 13.3 % of the voters ate younger than 30.

It is carnival season in Germany. Generally, you are allowed to vote in costume as long as your face is recognizable – you have to prove your identity by ID card or passport. Political statements or advertisements for a party are not allowed on the costume or elsewhere on you. It is not forbidden to vote under the influence of alcohol or drugs as long as public order is not disturbed.

You have to use the voting cabins set up in the polling station. Voting elsewhere is not allowed. You are not allowed to take anyone with you into the voting cabin, not even an infant. You are also not allowed to make contact with persons voting in neighboring voting cabins. Taking pictures, videos, or using your phone in the voting cabins is not allowed, the chairman of the polling station has to prevent you from casting your vote in this case. However, you can tear the voting sheet apart and request a new one to make a new attempt at casting a valid vote. You can do the same if you messed up and drew your cross accidentally in the wrong line.

The chairman of the polling station has the right to remove you from the voting cabin if you block it for an excessive amount of time. However, enough time should be granted to fully read the voting sheet.

The Federal Voting Order stipulates that a pen shall be present in the voting cabin. However, you can use any writing utensil, including lipstick or kohl. The only thing that counts is that the ballot paper clearly shows the will of the voter. Otherwise, the vote is invalid according to Section 39 of the Federal Elections Act. It does not always have to be a cross. Other symbols such as dots, check marks or double crosses are also acceptable. This does not include smileys, the swastika or other Nazi symbols. Writing comments does also invalidate the voting sheet.

You have two votes. With the first vote, you vote for a candidate of your voting district. The candidate with the most votes wins, but may not become member of parliament if his party doesn't get sufficient second votes, meaning that your district may not be represented in parliament – this new regulation may end up to be challenged at the Federal Constitutional Court. With the second vote, you determine the percentage of seats the parties get in the parliament. You do not vote directly for a chancellor candidate. The chancellor is elected by the Bundestag depending on the coalition that is formed based on the negotiations between the parties after the election. That means that it is not necessarily the candidate of the strongest party who is elected as Chancellor if a coalition with more votes than the strongest party is formed.

How to become that girl in 2025

happy new year! to kick off 2025, i want to share some ways that y'all can permanently glow up and become the best version of yourself!

health & fitness:

- find a workout that you actually enjoy and stick to it! it doesn't have to be an hour, but at least 10 minutes is good to start with!

- if you need help or inspiration for workouts, i personally love content from the learmann twins, taliyah joelle, savannah pesante, gisselle giron, taylor groulx, luisa giulietta, and monet zamora

- on that note, have a good stretching routine for before and after your exercises to stay flexible and to keep your muscles healthy and to help prevent injuries

- get enough sleep at night! it may seem like something that you hear all of the time, but getting enough sleep really sets the tone for your day. try to get between 6-8 hours at night, and if you have trouble with this, having a set bedtime and a good wind down routine may help!

- walk for at least an hour a day, especially if you have a remote job or attend school online! put on a good playlist or podcast

- eat a healthy, balanced diet that keeps you fueled and energized including fruits, vegetables, fiber, protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats

- drink 2l of water daily. you can also drink green tea, kombucha, or any other beverages that support skin/gut/heart health

- get sunlight or fresh air every day

- take your vitamins and supplements daily

mental wellness:

- do grounding exercises and journaling! doing these twice a day, in the morning and at night, can give you a great start and end to your day by reflecting on things going on in your life, your goals, highs and lows, or anything that's in your mind!

- listen to self help podcasts and read books about mental health and wellness to learn more about how to love yourself, set boundaries, and be your best self

- go to therapy if you need to! sometimes, there are things that we can't deal with on our own and it can help to talk to a professional who can guide you and give you the tools you need to face any problems in your life

- take time to take care of yourself and do things you enjoy, like reading, drinking tea, taking naps, or talking to friends

- if you're religious, having a healthy prayer life, going to worship services regularly, and being around people of the same faith as you can greatly help your mental and spiritual health

- listen to positive affirmations

- designate one day a week for a social media detox

self care:

- find a good skincare routine and do it in the morning and at night! if you aren't sure what products to buy or what your skin type is, you can go to your local dermatologist or esthetician. another alternative is looking at health and md websites to find your skin type and research good and effective skincare brands! no matter what your routine is, though, don't forget to use spf!

- have a good body care routine, as well, including a good body wash, exfoliator, lotion/butter, and body oil

- have a good haircare routine, consistent wash days, and try nourishing treatments like hair masks, hair oiling, and scalp massaging/steaming

- take good care of your teeth with brush, flossing, mouthwash, and whitening strips. you can also invest in a tongue scraper for extra fresh breath

- keep your nails and toes either painted/manicured or clean (depending on your preference)

organization:

- keep a google calendar with all important dates and assignments/projects

- have a daily to-do list of everything you need to do every day

RFQ (Request for Quote) for Fanfic Illustration Project

Hello! I am a fanfic author looking to commission 6 illustrations to appear in an upcoming fanfiction. My tentative/negotiable budget for this is $1650 USD or $275/illustration. I wish them to be done by 24th September. I am looking for illustrations that are fully shaded, and in color, suitable for appearing inline both online (via AO3) and in print in B&W. I am an amateur fannish creator, and this is the first time I've ever done something like this, and have no contacts to which to rely upon. As a result, I'm also offering a $50 finders fee for any good-faith tip, recommendation, or referral that ultimately leads to a successful agreement.

About the project:

Nature of Work/Quality Requested: Each illustration will involve two canon Stargate SG-1 characters that require, shading, detailing, and coloring. Each illustration also requires a background that effectively communicates the scene geography (ie, where the characters are in relation to eachother and their immediate surroundings). However, generally, the backgrounds do not require complicated shading and detailing as long as they get across the general idea - with the exception of a landscape background for one of the six illustrations. The backgrounds are: medical lab, briefing room, daylight forest, hillside overlooking river, underground cave.

Fandom: This project deals with the Stargate SG-1 fandom, and the characters of Janet Fraiser, Jonas Quinn, Samantha Carter, and the Goa'uld Nirrti. Someone familiar with this fandom would be preferred, but if you are not, substantial high quality references will be provided.

Controversial/Squicky Elements: These requested illustrations do not involve any kind of erotica or ongoing/imminent violence/gore and are SFW. However, of note, a few of the desired illustrations require an accurate reproduction of automatic firearms typical of Stargate SG-1 (specifically, the M16A2 and the MP5, references will be provided), and one of the desired illustrations involves an injured and bloodied person.

Revisions/Alterations requested? Due to the expedited nature of the project (just under two months to finish), I don't expect there to be time for any significant alterations. All I would request is a sketch copy of each illustration before major detail/shading/color work is undertaken, so I can verify the scene geography and major components are correct. If there is time, I may pay extra for alterations should I want them.

How you will be credited:

In-story, online: Your name and a hyperlink to your website/social/portfolio (as desired) will be attributed in the author's notes of the chapters in which your illustrations appear. Your name will also appear at at beginning/foreward, credited as "Illustrator"

In-story, in print: Your name and printed URLs/@s will appear in the beginning or the end of the story, at your choice, credited as "Illustrator"

I am willing to sign up for any online service that does not have onerous verification requirements, as long as such service does not require the use of a proprietary app that can only be installed on a smartphone.

Payments will be in installments as progress is made, or via escrow at the artist's request.

Yes. The listed budget is what I believe this project is worth based upon my very limited knowledge and experience, and the money I have available to pay. As the title suggests, please send in your own quote as you feel is fair compensation for your labor. However, cards on the table, price will be a significant factor when discriminating between bids and I may reduce the scope of the project rather than incurring cost overruns.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden is planning to write off around $4.7 billion in taxpayer-funded loans to Ukraine as part of an effort to boost Kiev’s war effort before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January.

Trump has previously demanded that only loans, not gifts, be provided to Kiev

US Congress has approved over $174 billion in aid packages to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

The latest tranche which was pproved in April, included over $9.4 billion in “forgivable loans” to help fill the gap in Kiev’s budget.

Confirming that Biden is planning to write off half of that amount, or roughly $4.7 billion, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said:“ We have taken the step that was outlined in the law to cancel those loans“.

RT reports: Cancelling the debt is in the “national interest of the United States and its EU, G7+, and NATO partners,” the State Department claimed in a letter to Congress dated November 18, according to Bloomberg.

President-elect Donald Trump stated on the campaign trail that he would not oppose Congress approving more aid to Ukraine as long as the assistance is given in the form of loans rather than taxpayer-funded gifts.

Rebranding some of the aid as loans was one of the key adjustments that helped push through the $61 billion April package after a months-long standoff between Republicans and the White House.

Senator Rand Paul has vowed to block the cancellation of the debt, arguing that it places an unfair burden on American taxpayers.

“Tonight, I’m forcing a vote on my resolution to prevent Biden from turning Ukraine’s debt into America’s problem. His proposal places the burden of funding Ukraine’s businesses, farmers, and corrupt bureaucrats on the shoulders of hardworking Americans,” Paul wrote in a statement on X on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian government is almost entirely reliant on Western aid to keep its economy afloat. In September, Kiev adopted its draft budget for 2025, predicting a deficit of 75% and estimating it will need between $12 billion and $15 billion to cover the shortfall.
