Final thought before I disappear into my d20 brainrot.
My knee-jerk reaction is "wow this sure looks a lot like an "I'm allowed to have other friends but you're not" type deal" and I'm not feeling that. Plus, Buck being "uuugh Eddie is cockblocking me!" only works if we've established that Buck knows he's in love with Eddie but doesn't think he has a chance so that angle's not working for me either. However, this is just a little clip, and it might make me laugh in the episode and it might be fine and it might be tolerable to watch. I'm reserving the right to land on either side of the fence. But after so many seasons of watching Buck and Eddie build a whole life and raise a whole child together, forgive me for being a bit 🙄 that Buck could (we still don't know how exactly it's playing out, hence why I'm waiting on full judgment) have an "oh I like men" moment and NOT tie it back into his feelings for Eddie but for some dude he barely knows. Again, it could be fine! Tommy could be the vehicle that leads to Buck opening those pretty eyes of his to see what was in front of his face this whole time. But until I see how they decide to play it all out, I'm just....reserving thoughts and feelings I guess. Because it could play out really well, but there are a lot of potential pit-falls, so we'll see I guess? ANYWAY. Cheers everyone, enjoy the speculation, imma go watch my emotional support millennials be ridiculous and try to shut my brain up for a few hours.

Tommy not dressing up for the party is going wild on Twitter lol, so I thought I'd give my opinions on it here where I'm less likely to get told to kms.
I think both things can be true. I think it is a very deliberate writing choice to contrast Eddie and Tommy, and how they respond to Buck's love for all things fun. I also think it wasn't meant to be a huge deal and doesn't show that Tommy isn't right for Buck, or that he doesn't care.
If he didn't care he wouldn't have been there- both for the party, and to the wedding itself.
I think it was just meant to establish that they are at the beginning of their relationship and still getting to know each other. Their relationship is still in the growing stage of learning each other's quirks and boundaries. Having Buck express disappointment rather than already knowing about Tommy not dressing up was a deliberate choice, yes, but I really don't think it was meant to establish any rifts in their relationship.
It was just meant to show that there are still pieces of each other that they don't know about yet. If this had happened a couple months down the line? I'm certain that Tommy wouldn't even think twice about just shoving a jacket on to fit the theme and leaving that jacket in his car if he got called out.
And as a Buddie endgame truther, having Eddie contrast that helps get the general audience get used to the idea that Eddie already knows this. He knows about "clipboard Buck" and having him come up with the theme shows that he's not only a supporter, but he's right there with him. It's just setting more foundations for if they ever decide to go that route.
Either way, I'm not quite sure how, even if you don't like BuckTommy, you could come out of that episode thinking that Tommy isn't all in. Dude literally showed up, still covered in soot and probably exhausted outta his mind, just because he knew it was important to Buck.
He's definitely Buck's best relationship so far (although the bar was basically on the ground lol)

Buddie
3. "Sit down and shut up."
Buck took the breakup with Tommy hard. He'd spent two days in bed, another week quiet, declining plans from everybody, and then had seemingly gone off the rails. He downloaded grindr. Which was weird enough because that was Buck 1.0 territory. Eddie hadn't been around for Buck 1.0, but he'd heard enough. And then it seemed like every free night was now either meeting some guy from grindr or going to Lenore's, a gay bar downtown.
Eddie was tired of always getting a no when he asked Buck to hang out. He missed his best friend! And he said something.
"Should have known you'd be getting your dick wet again. My apologies." Was it bitchy? Yes. But wasn't Buck supposed to be on version 4.0 or something? Hadn't he waxed on and on about how he wasn't a casual sex guy anymore?
"What the fuck is your problem?" Buck snapped.
"You, actually," Eddie replied. "Because after a week of declining plans with all of the people who love you and just want to help you feel better, you jumped right into fucking everything in sight. I miss my best friend, and I'm tired of Buck 1.0. Call me when you're back to normal." He slung his bag over his shoulder.
Buck frowned. "I'm going through something, Eddie."
Eddie kind of wanted to punch him. Part of him wanted to shake him. He did neither. "Yep. Your boyfriend broke up with you. It really sucks. I also got broken up with. And then my parents took my kid back to Texas. I get to FaceTime with him once a week, if I'm lucky. I know I caused all of it, but it would be really nice if my best friend could be around."
The anger on Buck's face disappeared immediately. "Eddie."
Eddie waved a hand. "Don't bother. I'm fine." And he walked out to his truck without looking back at Buck. He drove home. He cracked open a beer and dropped down onto his couch.
Eddie didn't love how often he was drinking alone these days and was slightly worried he was headed down a not good path. Just one more thing to worry about. No big deal.
He didn't have much time to worry about it though because he'd only managed half his beer before someone knocked on the door.
He set the bottle down on the coffee table and groaned as he stood.
Buck standing on the other side of the door was really a not-so-surprising surprise.
Eddie sighed. "I don't want to talk," he said, but he just turned and walked back toward the living room. He could hear Buck follow him in, closing the door behind him.
"You want a beer?" Eddie asked. "Maybe pregame a little. I'm sure the cocktails at Lenore's are at least 20 a piece. Might do you good to get a little buzz going before you head over there. Oh, though maybe you're just making a pitstop on the way to your dick of the night.:
"Sit down and shut up," Buck said.
Eddie turned toward him immediately. "Excuse me?"
"Sit down and shut up," Buck said again. He pointed to one of the chairs at the kitchen table with a fierce look that Eddie had never seen before.
Eddie frowned, but sat.
Buck scrubbed a hand over his face and sighed. "Tommy and I broke up because I'm in love with somebody else. I just didn't realize until he pointed it out."
Eddie's frown deepened. Who the fuck could Buck possibly be in love with? Not Natalia. Taylor? He pulled a face.
"This person doesn't feel like that for me. I know they don't. And I don't want to wreck the relationship I have with them, so I've been... filling my time with other people instead," Buck continued. He stood quiet for a second, then sat down. "It's a me thing. I'm just going through it, and I'm sorry."
Eddie sat silent. He frowned down at his hands. He frowned up at Buck. What the fuck?
"You're been avoiding me, Buck," he said finally.
Buck looked away. "I know."
What the fuck? "You love me?"
Buck took a deep breath and slowly let it out. He still didn't look back at Eddie. "I do."
Eddie felt a little like he'd been punched in the stomach, thought not in a bad way, which maybe didn't make any damn sense.
"It's okay. I know you don't feel that way for me. I'll get over it," Buck said.
Eddie sat, staring at Buck for a long minute before he finally spoke, choosing his words very carefully. "I am not saying I don't love you. You are my best friend. You are the person I trust most in the world, the person I want to see when I've had a bad day. But I need time to think about what that all means."
Bucks gaze snapped to his immediately. "But you're not saying you don't love me."
Eddie nodded. "I am not saying that. I didn't know you were an option until just now. I need time."
"I can give you time," Buck breathed. He nodded a few too many times.
"Go home. And don't fuck anybody," Eddie said.
Buck nodded again, almost as if he was one of those bobbleheads they gave out at baseball games. He got up quietly, and he left.
Eddie stayed sitting at the kitchen table for a long time after that.
What the fuck?

What kind of date night out do you see Buddie doing?
i like to think that at the very beginning of their relationship, hopeless romantics as they both are, they go in optimistically thinking that they'll be able to regularly treat each other to lavish restaurants and fancy outings....and then reality sets in and they realize that shit. they're both firefighters with busy schedules and a kid. so then they playfully bicker a for a little while about whether doing the same things they’ve been doing for years as friends — grabbing breakfast together after shift, stopping at their favorite burger place after dropping chris off at his robotics competitions, putting on a movie together and using that as an excuse to make out until they fall asleep on the couch together — count as dates and of course, like the cheesy saps they are, they come to the conclusion that yes they are dates because what is a date if not spending time with the person you love?
so then from then on they prioritize doing those things as often as they can, except with an added focus on intimacy. because while they do spend a lot of time together, most of it is in the more clinical context of work, so when they're not on shift they just want to be close to one another. maybe buck brings eddie lunch after his basketball games and they sit by the beach and eat together. maybe eddie teaches buck one of his mom's family recipes, and then sits on the counter as he watches buck lovingly learn the taste of eddie's childhood home. maybe they they just knock back a couple of beers together with a movie in the background, neither of them paying attention to it as eddie listens to buck ramble on and on about anything and everything that's been going on in their lives. maybe they'll work out together in silence at the gym and then go home, sated and sweaty and get another type of workout in later. maybe buck takes eddie out on a drive with no destination in mind, simply for the sake of getting to spend that time together.
i also like to think that on occasion, when they do feel like going out together, their favorite thing to do is to try out every new thing under the sun — maybe they'll take a pottery class and they'll be absolutely terrible at it, but they'll love it anyway. maybe they'll try a new hiking trail and their knees will be sore and achy by the end of it. maybe eddie will take buck and chris camping, because they've never done that as a family. maybe they'll rock climb, or attempt to garden, or maybe buck drags eddie to another karaoke bar. idk. i just know that sometimes they'll love it, sometimes they'll hate it, but it's always worth it because their ultimate goal, after everything they've been through, is just to live out the rest of their lives together 💕

merry go 'round
9-1-1 on Fox | Pre-Buddie | 700 words | phone call, buck gets existenial about lounge furniture, taylor speaks in riddles, post s6
Buck is having an existential crisis over his life, his girlfriend, and his furniture. He calls Taylor for advice.
“Why are you calling me, Buckley?” Taylor sounds groggy and vexed, which Buck supposes makes sense and in all honesty, he isn’t sure he has an answer but he’s been pacing his apartment for hours and the sun set without him noticing, and then it started rising again while he was still pacing.
“I don’t know.” He says eventually.
Taylor sighs and he hears her shuffling around on the other end of the line. “You don’t know? Buck, it’s five am, on a Sunday. I was asleep.”
“I know, I’m sorry.” He really is sorry. It took a while for him and Taylor to get to where they are now but nine months on from their break up they’ve talked and reconciled a few sore spots between them and are friends again. Friends who catch up every couple of weeks, who go for coffee or to a bar for drinks. But not really friends who call each other at five o'clock in the morning in the middle of an existential crisis.
“Why didn't you call Eddie?” She asks.
“Eddie’s asleep.”
“I was asleep, Buck.” She spits and then breathes heavily. “So, why didn’t you call Eddie? Or is this about Eddie?”
“It’s not,” Buck says as he sits on the barstool in his kitchen and looks out at his empty loft. His coffee table; is clear of books, puzzles, and remotes. His bookshelves; are tidy and decorated, but almost to the point of looking like they've been staged for a home magazine. His new couch, the new new one. Not the one his Mom brought, the one that Natalia helped him pick out. It looks nice in the same way that the bookcases do. It fits the space well, it's a good size, and the color ties in well with his other furniture. It’s decidedly more comfortable than the one his Mom brought. But like the bookcases, it looks—put on.
All of my couches came with girlfriends.
“Am I going in circles?” He asks eventually and Taylor laughs. It’s light and polished on the edges just as it always was.
“Physically or metaphorically, because you sound like you’ve been pacing? Have you been pacing?”
“How do you know I’ve been pacing?”
“Because these questions sound like you’re overthinking, and when you overthink, you pace.” She says matter-a-factly. “It was quite annoying actually. You overthink a lot.”
“Duly noted, thanks.” He rolls his eyes and rubs the cuff of his sweatshirt back and forth between his fingers. “Seriously though, do you think I’m going in circles?”
“In what context?” Research, facts. This is why he called Taylor.
“Life? Relationships?”
She sighs again, she does that a lot now. Like Buck is something to be pitied, or frown at, or maybe she just wishes he could see whatever she thinks is so obvious. He wants to, he just doesn’t know where to look. “I heard you got a new girlfriend.”
“It’s been almost a year since we broke up, Taylor.”
“I’m not jealous, Buckley. I’m not fourteen and cursing your name in my diary while telling it every terrible, no good thing you ever did to me.” She scolds then her voice changes. It doesn’t soften, not really, but it evens out and loses its sharpness. “She seems nice from your pictures. Very pretty.”
“Yeah, she is nice.” Natalia is very nice, probably nicer than Buck deserves, particularly when he could put her in a lineup with his bookshelf and his couch and probably wouldn’t be able to pick the difference.
“Buck, what makes you think you’re going in circles?” Taylor asks.
Considering it’s all he’s thought about for the last eight hours he’s been haunting his own home, he doesn’t have to think long on his answer but he pauses anyway. Maybe for dramatic effect, maybe just to breathe.
“I just–. I feel like every time I’m making progress, doing better, learning things, learning from things, and then finally feeling ready to step into a relationship again, it doesn’t feel like progress, it just feels like falling back into the same patterns.” He bites his lip and it stings. “Like I’m going in circles, like getting on and off the same Merry Go ‘Round.”
“Are you going in circles to find something or around something?”
She talking in riddles and Buck’s too tired and too stressed to decipher them. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Taylor is quiet for a moment. The breeze outside brushes the leaves of the palm on his balcony against the window.
She shifts again. “Are you sure this isn’t about Eddie?”
Maybe it is. Maybe it should be.

Can I prompt you? Basing on that bull riding video. Buddie not yet established but Eddie and Buck were dared to ride the bull together, but Buck kept slipping and almost falling so Eddie asked Buck to wrap his legs around his waist and Eddie's hands are keeping him steady. Buck is hiding his blush behind the cowboy hat he was supposed to wear while clinging to Eddie. Both are trying hard not to get hard 😉🤣
@leewithme since I said I would tag you in more things!
*I rewrote most of this today (4/2/23) now that I have had some sleep and not running on energy drinks and cookies, so it's almost twice as long and not so shit (I hope)😅
Read on AO3
Backing down from a challenge wasn’t some Eddie did, not when he could help it.
He'd always been the kind of guy to take risks, even when it scared him—he was a firefighter, after all. But it turned out that a simple dare from Chimney, as they all sat around laughing at a cowboy-themed bar, would be the one thing that had his heart skipping a beat.
Because with a smirk, Chimney had glanced at Hen, seeming to communicate his amusement, before challenging him and Buck to ride the mechanical bull together.
His mouth had gone dry at the thought of the earlier pairs he’d seen riding it and how erotic it appeared, reminding him of just how much more than a friend he wanted Buck to be.
Ever since they’d met, becoming partners on the job, he hadn’t been able to get Buck out of his head. The way he had started to secretly pine over him had him feeling like a teenager with a crush.
And if he weren’t a complete coward when it came to relationships, he might have confessed his feelings by now, but the fear of it ruining their friendship, that Buck might not feel the same way, kept him silent—though maybe this dare could change things.
He should just smile and wave off the dare, but when he glanced across the table, seeing how Buck was grinning at him, his eyes sparkling in amusement, he felt his reluctance begin to melt away.
Because suddenly, it wasn’t just Chimney daring him, as there was a challenge in Buck’s eyes now, too, and there was no way Eddie would back down from that.
“Alright,” Eddie said, standing and pounding the last of his beer, smirking at Buck. “Let’s go.”
Buck tipped his head in agreement, picking up his cowboy hat and setting it on his head, then motioning toward the center ring. “After you.”
Eddie climbed onto the bull first, sitting the wrong way so that Buck would face him when he got on the other side.
The metal felt smooth and slightly cool under his hands as he settled into position. He offered Buck a hand after, the man’s face flushing somewhat as he struggled to get his footing, not usual for Buck, but he’d also had a few drinks.
Once they were settled, the bull began to move, which proved harder than Eddie had imagined keeping their touches purely platonic would be. They kept bumping and slipping into each other, seemingly unsure where to place their hands or what would be appropriate.
Some of the patrons from the bar shouted for them to get closer and a few other things, which included taking off their shirts, but that only had them both laughing awkwardly.
And Eddie tried not to make it obvious, but sitting this close, he couldn’t tear his gaze away from how pretty Buck’s mouth looked, especially when he smiled, or his tongue peeked out from between his teeth.
Then a harder rock had Buck knocking into him, making the blond scramble to grip him tighter, his fingers digging into his shoulders as he tried not to slip.
“Sorry,” Buck said, ducking his head. “Not meaning to be all up in your business.”
But then Buck almost slipped again, though Eddie stopped him from falling, seizing the excuse to have him closer. "Here, wrap your legs around me,” he said, his voice low as he tapped Buck’s thighs. "I'll keep you steady."
Buck hesitated momentarily, his eyes searching Eddie's face, and then he nodded, wrapping his legs around Eddie's waist and gripping his shoulders tightly.
And at first, it was awkward as they both struggled to find their balance, but the new position felt nice, allowing Eddie to feel the heat radiating off him.
Then encouraged by a shy smile from Buck, he wrapped his arms around him and snugged him tighter to his chest, using this as an excuse to hold him like he’d always wanted.
“You, uh, smell nice,” Buck confessed, then looked away, clearly trying to hide his embarrassment under the brim of his hat. “Shit, sorry. I don’t know why I said that.”
Eddie just laughed, humming loud enough for him to hear, sliding his hands down to rest just under where Buck’s belt rested—in other words, his ass.
And that had Buck glancing back at him, head cocking to the side as one of his hands went to hold his hat. A sly smile slipped onto his lips as he seemed to process the signals Eddie was sending, and much to Eddie’s relief, he didn’t seem opposed.
“Oh,” Buck said, then looking a bit predatory, almost daring, he ground himself against Eddie’s crotch, which worked to drag the filthiest moan from Eddie, that he was thankful the crowd couldn’t hear.
He had to sink his teeth into his lip to stop himself from encouraging him to do it again, as it hadn’t been lost on him that there was a bar full of people cheering them on who didn’t need to see him coming in his pants like a teenager.
The bull operator hadn’t stopped the ride, but he had slowed it down a bit, and he doubted it was a coincidence that the song Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy had started playing.
And that just had Buck ratcheting up his attempts at unraveling Eddie’s control as he began to obscenely rut against him, clearly not bothered in the slightest by the onlookers and definitely over any embarrassment or hesitation he had earlier.
But eventually, the fun had to end, which was probably for the best since Eddie felt damned close to coming, and he’d have had to become a hermit, never leaving his house again if that had happened. Their friends from work would have never let him live it down.
So when the bull jerked to a stop, throwing them together, they caught each other just before their noses could bump.
They froze for a moment, their faces inches apart—the tension thick.
Then slowly, almost hesitantly, Eddie leaned in, his lips brushing against Buck's in a gentle, tentative kiss.
And then he felt Buck’s smile against him just before cupping the back of his head and kissing him with the same sheer determination that he used when fighting a fire—though that didn’t mean he didn’t have skills. Because damn, could the man kiss—definitely one of the best Eddie had ever had.
Though, the fact it was Buck kissing him—the man he had been pining over for so long—meant that any kiss from him would top all the rest.
And the crowd whistled and cheered as they nipped and nibbled at each other’s mouths, hands very close to some areas that they probably shouldn’t be in public, making him wish they were anywhere else.
Because with Buck pressed so close to him and the walls finally down between them, he wanted nothing more than to take him apart, to explore Buck inside and out.
His body ached for him.
But they couldn’t stay in this moment forever, so they broke apart, their breathing ragged as they looked at each other. No doubt they both had kiss-bitten lips.
"I've been wanting to do that for months," Buck said, his voice hoarse with emotion.
"Me too," Eddie replied, his heart racing as he took in how dark Buck’s eyes had become—how hungry they were.
And when they hopped off the bull, Eddie slipped a hand into Buck’s back pocket as the blond tipped his hat to the crowd, both of them taking a bow—while back at their table, their friends were passing around cash as they seemed to be settling up some bets.

Blind Date by @sassypopstar [complete | teen and up audiences | 3.8k words]
Buck feels a little ridiculous dressed in a jacket and a shirt. But Maddie had insisted on him dressing up for the occasion and even Chimney had quipped that it’s the right thing to do. So Buck, who never went on a blind date before in his life, listened to his big sister and her boyfriend because apparently that’s who he is now. Or the one where Buck goes on a blind date with someone called Eddie.

A world where Buck owns a flower shop and manages to develop a huge, massive, ridiculous crush on a handsome firefighter that comes in for a visit one day. Or, 5 times Eddie gives flowers to other people and the 1 time he gives them to Buck.
Call It What You Will - Fate? Destiny? (A Tsunami) by @abow123456 [complete | mature | 20k words]

Capuccino with extra, extra sugar by buckbng [complete | teen and up audiences | 2.7k words]
Buck is the cute barista and Eddie is the grinch that hates coffee. Until, he doesn't. OR Eddie really doesn't like coffee but pretends he does just so he has an excuse to see the cute barista at the coffee shop.
Confirmation Bias by strifechaos [complete | mature | 31k words]
After the fallout with his ex-wife, Eddie believed he could only trust his family with his son. He hadn’t imagined falling for his son’s sweet-hearted nanny, Buck. With his own family so distant, Buck never considered that he’d be lucky enough to find a home for himself, let alone people he could count on. Not until he meets the Diaz boys. AU: Buck was never a firefighter, and becomes Christopher's sitter when Shannon's job takes her away from Eddie and Chris for the summer. Eddie tries to not fall for his son's nanny, he's not very successful.
dream of some epiphany by extasiswings [complete | mature | 7.3k words]
Evan Buckley is lost. It’s happenstance that he wanders into the navy recruiting center—he’s been in San Diego for a few weeks, bartending late nights and weekends, living in a house with three other guys not because he needs the roommates but because he doesn’t want to be alone, and the military is…respectable. Stable. So Buck thinks maybe and opens the door. Buck leaves ten minutes later with a set of printed instructions for sending his first letter, assured that he can drop it off whenever he’s ready, and a name. Staff Sergeant Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz.

Gave me no messages, gave me no signs... by @reallysmartladymariecurie [complete | teen and up audiences | 7.4k words]
"Buck is beyond nervous, and he’s really trying to convince himself that the familiarity of the situation is not some sort of bad omen. Just because there are parallels of the start of his relationship with Eddie to that of his relationship with Abby doesn’t mean that this new adventure is destined to end in the same miserable fashion. He hopes it won’t, has to believe it won’t. Because even with Abby, he hadn’t fallen this hard for her before their first official date. With Eddie, everything is already intensified by a thousand." Or, Buck covers a shift for a firefighter at the 136 and it leads to a budding relationship through text messages.
Gotta Find My Corner (Of the Sky) by doctornineandthreequarters [complete | general audiences | 31.3k words]
It was the last day of 2016 and two lost souls found themselves in a quiet dive bar, as the loud noises of the city celebrating New Year’s Eve buzzed around them. Most people chose loud, flashy bars with DJs and entrance fees and promises of champagne for New Year’s Eve. But both occupants of the dive bar preferred the quiet. They both didn’t need the added chaos when everything around them already felt chaotic. --- Or, Buck and Eddie meet on New Year's Eve, 2016, a meeting that sets of a series of events that changes the trajectory of both of their lives.
I Didn't Know I Was Lonely 'Till I Saw Your Face by @hmslusitania [complete | general audiences | 10.4k words]

OR Total strangers Buck and Eddie go to couple's therapy together to get out of the therapy requirements their captains have placed on them.

It’s not like Eddie Diaz planned on this. Really, there was no scenario in his mind where he would ever be bringing his son’s teacher a freaking goody basket to class; a homemade goody basket, no less. Then again, Christopher has never had a teacher quite like Evan Buckley.
MukbangsWithBuck by @reallysmartladymariecurie [complete | teen and up audiences | 19.3k words]
After growing tired of eating alone in his loft, Buck decides to start a YouTube channel where he records himself eating dinner and telling stories about crazy things his team has encountered on calls. He eventually gains a substantial fanbase, and he is led to the channel of another LA firefighter who uploads informational videos and also casual vlogs with his ten-year-old son. It isn't long before the two start a friendship through messages, both of them secretly hoping it will turn into something more. Or, Eddie and Buck are both firefighters/YouTubers and they end up falling in love.
Objects in the Mirror by SevenSoulmates [complete | explicit | 139.1k words]
The voice had always been around, Eddie remembers it, like a stream of consciousness that babbled incoherently to the point where Eddie just tuned it out.  But then the voice started speaking directly to him. Conversing like he was a whole person standing right in front of him. Like he could see what was happening around Eddie. Eddie shook his head. No one was talking to him, and Eddie most certainly was not talking back. He wouldn’t talk to the boy in his head ever again. There was no boy in his head.
Passive Aggressive Flirting by @starlingbite [complete | general audiences | 4.5k words]
Buck and Eddie have never met. They both work at the 118 but just on different shifts. That's all about to change when Buck finds a sticky note message, signed E.
String of hearts... by @reallysmartladymariecurie [complete | teen and up audiences | 11.1k words]
“Now. Eddie is this incredible presence. He’s funny and smoking hot, and he has a son who sounds wonderful. And he’s serious and vulnerable at times. But so enjoyable to be around, every single second that he’s there. And how can I put myself out there when the expectation is so high? When the thing I might lose is so beautiful?”
In which Buck owns a plant shop in LA, and Eddie becomes his new favorite customer. Pining ensues.

Season 5 Fic Rec Roundup
Tumblr media
doing something a little different for fic recs this week and posting a roundup of a bunch of my favorite fics set during this fantastic season. some of these are repeats from past rec lists. just think of it as a double recommendation.
all  past lists are found under the weekly fic rec tag!
Some Questions I Cannot Ask by thingsthatfly
| buddie | M | hurt/comfort, getting together | words: 14079 | complete |
"He hadn't considered this part when he quit. How working side by side every shift and hanging out during their aligned time off would turn into the occasional 45 minute lunch. How he would go from feeling Buck’s knee against his in the truck and his hands on his body to double check that his harness is done right to rarely seeing him, rarely touching him, and going home alone while Taylor moves in closer."
Eddie leaves the 118. Buck shows up to ask him to lunch. Everything is good, he made the right decision, and everything still hurts.

“There’s two of us,” Eddie says. “There’s two of them.”
Buck nods, following his line of thought. They could probably take them down if they wait until the right moment.
 “There’s two—”
“Hey, Mitch. Do my eyes deceive me, or is this kid one and the same?”
The blond guy, Mitch apparently, smirks up at Eddie and flips a photo of Chris from his wallet to show him, then looks back at it and lets his gaze wander between the small photo and Buck’s phone. Eddie hasn’t seen Buck’s lock screen recently, but it’s not hard to guess what it is based on the other man’s words.
━━━
AKA a “what-if” fic in which Mitch and Dom assume that Buck is Christopher’s dad, too, and they use that to their advantage against Eddie
Give Me Fire (It'll Burn All Your Fear Away) by Princessfbi
| buddie | t | hurt/comfort | words: 7712 | complete |
 “Eddie?”
Eddie frowned as Taylor’s voice flooded the cab of his truck.
 “Taylor? How did you—”
“You have to get to Buck’s loft! It’s on fire!”
Eddie’s foot nearly jumped the gas. “What?”
“Buck’s building is on fire! I… the smoke was too bad and—” Taylor broke off with a harsh cough that sounded like it had been ripped out of her with claws leaving her with slashes along her throat. The light changed green and Eddie slammed on the gas, swerving in and around traffic as he raced to Buck’s place.
 “Call 9-1-1!”
 “We did! Eddie… Buck, he… I think he’s inside!”
we got ethical conflict taylor at the cost of arsonist lucy - but this is still one of my favorite fics with the concept.

Close Enough for Comfort by allyasavedtheday
| buddie | M | emotional hurt/comfort | words: 14074 | complete |
Their first hug doesn’t happen at the firehouse.
It’s at a bar where they’d decided to get a drink after work. Eddie arrives a little after he does once he drops Christopher off at his aunt’s place and when he joins Buck at the table he pulls him into one of those casual, back-slapping kinds of hugs.
It’s nothing to write home about. It’s friendly, comfortable, but Eddie’s hands are warm on Buck’s back and for the briefest second Buck can feel Eddie’s smile imprinted against his shoulder before it’s over.
He puts it down to missing Abby that he finds himself thinking about it when he’s trying to fall asleep that night.
A look at how Buck and Eddie's physical relationship develops from season 2 to season 5 AKA the one with all the hugging.

With Eddie away dealing with his family in Texas, Buck makes the mistake of showing the movie Home Alone to Christopher the day before a shift, where he has to leave him, well, home alone. With Taylor.

| buddie | M | hurt/comfort / slow burn | words: 91,215 | complete |
When Eddie left the 118, he promised Buck that nothing would change. But six weeks later, things were strained between them as Eddie tried to adjust to his new role at dispatch while Buck decided to take a major step forward in his relationship. After a series of revelations forced Buck and Eddie to confront what they really wanted out of life, it was up to them to find their way back to each other.
Back home.

“Hey,” Ravi says. “Scale of 1 to 10, how bad would it be if I assumed Eddie Diaz’s girlfriend was his wife in front of him?”
Lee groans. “Did you do it in front of Buckley?”
“Yeah?”
“A hundred,” she replies, turning the other direction before Ravi can demand to know why.
At three in the morning, it hits him. He bolts upright in his cot. Oh my god, he thinks. Buck and Eddie are divorced, and everyone forgot to tell me.

Eddie reaches a hand, slowly, towards the cat, palm up and open like he was taught to greet dogs, and the beast hisses at him.
“Oh, relax,” he says, rolling his eyes, and inches his hand closer. “I’m bigger than you.”
The cat’s eyes are narrowed into slits, zeroed in on his hand, but she doesn’t hiss again. Eddie’s not sure how she does it, but he gets the distinct impression that she’s doing him a huge favour when she finally lets him get close enough to run gentle fingers over the top of her head.
Her fur is dry and chalky, like she’s got a layer of grime settled on top of her. Eddie’s familiar with the feeling.

“Buck,” Bobby says again with that tone, “Eddie’s not coming back until he’s processed what he needs to. If he comes back before he’s ready then he’s putting himself and everyone else in danger.”
Buck reels from the comment as it hits too close to home. He’s suddenly reminded of Bobby uttering the words 'light duty' as they rise up unbidden from the back of his mind, but Hen just tilts her head to her shoulders beside him as though she’s been handed the missing piece of the puzzle.
“He asked to come back, didn’t he?” She says knowingly, and Buck almost gives himself whiplash from the speed in which he turns from her to his captain and back again.
 “Wait—what?”
Buck finds out about Bobby and Eddie's conversation, and Eddie won't reply to any of his messages. (He's trying not to freak out. It's not going well.)

Buck thrusts his phone into Eddie’s hand, opened to their text thread, and—oh. It’s a picture that Ravi sent him that Eddie obviously sent to Buck immediately, because it was—actually, he doesn’t really know why he sent it to Buck. Ravi sends him random shit like that all the time, from memes to TikToks, and usually, Eddie just reacts to the messages with a laugh or a thumbs up and leaves it at that.
But Frank’s been telling him to express himself without words, since Eddie is, according to Frank, emotionally constipated sometimes, and so—he just sent it without thinking.
Eddie glances at the picture, mouth quirking a little in the corner.
“It’s a meme,” Eddie says, raising an eyebrow at Buck. “I know you know what that is. You’re the one who taught me what they were.”
or, healing through shitty memes sure is cathartic.

Bobby chews his lip. “If you’re sure,” he says finally. “He just looked a little off at that car crash, is all.”
“I would have noticed,” Buck insists. “It’s Eddie. I would’ve noticed.”

| buddie | g | romance | words: 5338 | complete |
He loves the kitchen sink and the drying rack on the counter, because he always washes and Eddie always dries and sometimes when he dries he chips the grey bowls and breaks the white plates, but it doesn’t matter because he bought the set second hand and really, they don’t need more than three plates, three bowls, three mugs, and three forks.
 “Just three?” Maddie asks.
“Yeah, me, Christopher, and Eddie,” he says, like it’s obvious.
Maddie gives a knowing smile. “And Taylor?”
He shrugs. “It’s not like the four of us hang out."
“So who’s plate is she borrowing when they leave?” Buck stays quiet. She sets her mug on the table. “Moving out might help, but no matter where you go, you’ll only have three plates.”
(In which Buck hates his apartment, breaks up with Taylor, and makes a long overdue confession.)

Oh,” Greg says, his face falling, “that’s Lucifer.”
Buck lets out something between a laugh and a cough.
 “Lucifer,” he repeats.
“It's a long story,” Greg says, tugging on the collar of his polo, his name tag clinking. “He's—not exactly well socialized, and he really, really hates“ he starts, except he’s interrupted by Eddie’s voice, the first words Buck has heard him say since they dropped Chris off at Hen and Karen's.
“Hi,” Eddie says, crouching right under the bright red sign – which, now that Buck’s close enough to read it, says DO NOT PET – and reaching his fingers toward the bars.
“—men,” Greg finishes, his voice weak, frozen mid-step like he’s not sure if he should be hauling Eddie away while there’s still time. “He hates men. Usually.”

“No getting out of it now.” Bobby’s steady voice makes him flinch.
“We literally haven’t moved.”
“You could run,” Bobby says with a shrug. “But then you’d have to deal with Athena.” He steps into the RV.
Turning around, Buck sees Athena standing at the doorway, her hand still in the air. When she catches his eye, something in her expression shifts. He’s seen that expression before. Typically, she uses it on people who are about to flee arrest.
 I fucking dare you.
Sighing, Buck gets on the RV.
After a call that is almost his last, Buck is having a hard time. He’s avoids his family, his friends, and everything in between. When Bobby suggests they go on a road trip, he almost laughs. But what’s worse? He actually says yes.

 “Chim. Weird question?”
Chimney’s chair creaks. Buck cranes his head over the back of the couch and watches him straighten up, pop his back, close the folder.
“You only ever ask me weird questions,” he says, and then crosses the loft to sit in one of the armchairs. He levels Buck with a look that’s way too knowing for the amount of words they’ve exchanged. “What’s up?”
 He takes a breath.
“What does it feel like to be a dad?”

eddie's not entirely sure he believes in getting help, at least not for himself. there's only so much healing to be had for a body torn apart by bullets, for a mind that's only half there, for a man who's been leaving pieces of himself behind all his life with nothing to take their place.
except, as it turns out, falling apart happens in increments, and healing does, too: it happens when you gnaw a hole in your lip trying to keep quiet only to have the words escape; when you realize that the ghost you've been seeing out of the corner of your eye is yourself; when your best friend smiles, and you allow it to take your breath away.
it happens through the smallest of things: bird feeders, and cacti, and pasta shapes.

Note
If I may be so bold as to throw one of these your way, could I suggest:
24. Soulmate AU + 57. Forgotten First Meeting, with Buddie of course
24. Soulmate AU + 57. Forgotten First Meeting
Okay, so, it’s like this:
The first time your soulmate touches you skin to skin, it leaves a mark. And over time (because in a world where there are soulmarks, you know there would be entire scientific branches devoted to studying them) the different colours left behind on your skin have been decoded.
Red, weirdly, is for platonic love, so when eight-year-old Maddie Buckley holds her brand new baby brother for the first time and kisses him right there on his eyebrow, well, it leaves Evan with a splotch on his face and saves Maddie just, like, so much money in lipstick for the rest of her life.
The marks stay connected, too, throughout a person’s lifetime. Touch them together again and it sparkles under your skin like an effervescent tablet in water. And that’s true of all marks, not just romantic or platonic ones.
For a long time, those marks are the only ones either Buckley sibling has.
When Maddie gives him her Jeep and Buck runs, out from under their parents’ thumbs, she gets him to stoop down and kisses him on the eyebrow again, and then they don’t see each other for years.
Buck travels. He crosses the US a few times, back and forth. He goes to Peru, he comes back. He crosses the US again, taking a long drive through the deserts that look like paintings that make up the southwestern corner of the country. He ends up stopping the night in El Paso on his way between places, stocks up on provisions for the rest of his road trip to LA where he thinks he might try his hand at being a firefighter.
He stops a few other places, too, and doesn’t notice until he gets to the beach in LA and strips off his shirt to go for a swim. There’s a livid purple soulmark on his arm.
And he has no idea who it came from.
Soulmarks aren’t really essential for relationships, at least that’s what everyone keeps telling him when, ah, circumstances conspire to mean that Eddie and Shannon need to get married. Due to the whole “lack of soulmarks” thing, neither of them had really meant for their relationship to be serious, but, now, well.
Things are tense, at best.
But Christopher.
Eddie’s still terrified, of course he is, he’s twenty-two and he’s supposed to be a dad? But in the delivery room, he gets talked into trimming the umbilical cord just moments after Chris is born, and that’s terrifying, what if he fucks it up, and Christopher’s little belly is so small and surely he shouldn’t be putting scissors -- even sterilised medical ones -- anywhere near his newborn son -- he has a son, what even is happening right now -- and he doesn’t really mean to but he pats Chris on the shoulder to try and calm him -- being born is just, like, a lot for everyone, parents and children alike, and Eddie kind of wishes he was allowed to scream right then too, but he’ll leave that to the kid (oh god he has a kid).
Bright red blooms across Chris’s shoulder and for a wild second, Eddie thinks that maybe, somehow, his son is allergic to him.
The actual significance sets in a few seconds later when he notes that the pads of his own fingers are the same shade of red.
All three of the grandparents in the room take it in turns to pass Christopher around and see if they, also, have this connection to their grandson. They don’t. And to make things just that much worse, neither does Shannon.
So, y’know, things are tense.
At best.
It’s years later, after Eddie gets back from Afghanistan, after Shannon’s left Chris and given up on Eddie, after she’s sent the divorce papers, that he’s finally deciding he needs to take Chris and get the hell out of Texas. He hasn’t resolved to do this at all, he’s still just thinking about it (his parents haven’t tried to take Chris from him yet), and he’s doing his grocery shopping in the dead of night because he doesn’t really have another time to do it, what with working three jobs and having a six-year-old.
He’s so lost in thought about where they’d go if they left Texas and what he would do to support them that he’s only vaguely aware of someone bumping his arm as they cross paths in the aisles.
He doesn’t think much about it -- doesn’t really notice -- until he’s helping Chris with his cereal the next morning and Chris points out that there’s a big purple mark on his arm.
Chris wants to know what the purple marks mean, because he’s only ever noticed red ones, and Eddie doesn’t really know how to explain that it means Eddie touched the person he’s going to fall in love with and be in love with for the rest of his life, because he...has no idea who it was.
And so, mostly, Eddie tries not to think about it. He goes about his business, eventually his parents try to take Chris and they run for LA. He gets a job at the fire department and gets assigned a station.
There’s another guy on his shift who’s got a bruise-like purple soulmark on his bicep and -- according to Chimney -- a tragic lovestory to go with it. Chimney doesn’t know the tragedy, but offers some gossipy suggestions.
Buck doesn’t really like Eddie at first, but his posturing reminds Eddie just a little of a golden retriever trying to be fierce when you know the only thing going on in a golden’s head is fluff and love.
They pull a grenade out of a guy’s leg, and Buck likes him after that.
Hell, they survive an earthquake together with absolute aplomb, and Buck spends the whole time reassuring Eddie that Chris is gonna be fine. Buck doesn’t even know Chris, but it makes Eddie feel better.
It happens on their fourth shift.
They go to this dumbass call where a woman’s gotten her head stuck in a tailpipe at a cowboy bar -- Eddie wants to be haughty about the bar’s trappings in born-and-raised Texan, but, well, he’s been to pretty much this exact bar back home -- and both Buck and Eddie get hit on by the assembled onlookers. Usually, Eddie’s noticed, the soulmark on his arm deflects random flirting way better than his wedding ring ever had, but these women are drunk and he’s a firefighter so it could very easily be a bruise.
As they walk back towards the engine, Buck starts teasing Eddie about his apparent disinterest in the women. Eddie starts to fire back about Buck living in his invisible girlfriend’s house, but their arms brush together.
And they sparkle like fucking poprocks.

for the prompts: #70?
70 — “After everything we’ve been through, you still don’t think that I love you?”
buddie fluff!
from this prompt list
“Do you think you’ll ever find love again?”
They’re in Buck’s kitchen, Chris sitting on the couch catching the end of their movie, while Buck and Eddie wash and dry their dishes, when Buck blurts the question out suddenly. Eddie pauses mid-wiping down a plate, and raises his eyebrow, turning slowly to give Buck an amused look.
“That’s a question,” He says after a moment. Buck flushes a little and rolls his eyes.
They’d been talking about a call they had this morning. It was one of those old married couples that always hit Buck right in the gut. He had sat to the side on the curb with the wife, while they carried her husband to the ambulance, and listened to her tell him their love story.
He didn’t even try to hide his tears as he climbed back into the truck with the rest of the team.
“I’m sure I will. I’m not interested in looking for it right now, though,” Eddie says, smiling over at Buck. “I’ve got everything I need right here, you know?”
Buck turns to look over at Christopher, smiling at the look of his face, transfixed on the movie.
“Yeah, I know,” Buck nods, turning off the sink and grabbing an extra towel to help Eddie dry.
“It just — don’t you get lonely sometimes? It’s been so long since I lived with somebody else. Sometimes I just think...it’d be nice to have someone to come home to.”
Buck’s starting to think maybe he shouldn’t have gone ahead and had that extra beer. He’s not sure what’s gotten him thinking like this. He and Taylor decided they were better as friends a long time ago — and since Eddie had broken up with Ana around the same time — they just filled the space for each other. He hasn’t really felt lonely in a while. He doesn’t really want someone else to be here...he wants Eddie to stay.
Eddie looks at him for a moment before he grabs the last plate from his hand and puts it away. He sighs and leans against the counter, reaching for his beer.
“You could always move in with me. Then you can come home to us,” Eddie says, like a joke. Except it’s not; he’s mentioned moving in to Buck at least a dozen times over the last couple of months, since they both got out of relationships and started spending almost every non-working moment in each other’s homes. Buck never seems to think he’s serious though.
“Right,” Buck chuckles, ducking his head. When he looks back up at Eddie, he’s a little shyer and quieter. It’s the look he gets when he starts to doubt himself, and it always makes Eddie want to reach out and shake some sense into him.
“It’s just different I guess. I want to come home to someone who loves me.”
That hits Eddie like a punch.
His body tenses up and he feels a wave of emotions building up in his chest. He’s hurt, for one, and angry.
“Buck,” He starts, running a hand over his face. He crosses his arms and sets his bottle back against the edge of the counter, glancing out the window. The city lights calm him a little bit.
“Why do you think I keep asking you to move in?” He asks eventually, his voice soft. Buck tilts his head to the side and shrugs.
“To save money?”
Eddie looks at him, unimpressed. It makes Buck shrink in on himself a bit.
“You don’t think it’s maybe because I want you there?” Buck blinks at him.
“Eddie…”
“No, listen to me, Buck. I don’t think — I don’t think you understand.”
Eddie looks down again and brings a hand up to his face, pressing his fingers into the bridge of his nose as he thinks. His head’s spinning a little bit — not drunk, just overwhelmed and dizzy — because of Buck. Because of all of these feelings he has about Buck that have been building up inside of him for years. Because it’s getting harder for him to pretend that he just wants to be friends with him.
These last months have been nice, the way they’ve slid perfectly into the empty spaces in each other’s lives. But any time they have a conversation like this, Eddie feels that fear spike up in him, the fear that he’s about to lose one of the best things that have ever happened to him. Sometimes he thinks he should just tell him, just rip the band-aid off and finally expose the softest, most vulnerable part of himself that he’s been guarding all these years. He knows Buck would never leave him — especially not over the fact that Eddie loves him. But things would change, they’d have to. And that’s the part that holds him back most of the time.
But tonight feels different. He knows Buck wants this as much as he does — he has to. But Buck will never be the one to make the first move, because he’s weighed down by his past: by the abandonment, the neglect, the fear that he’s too much for anyone to stick around for.
Eddie’s not sure how he doesn’t get it at this point.
“After everything we've gone through together, you still don’t think I love you?”
“I know you love me, Eddie—“
“No, Buck,” Eddie says again, and his voice is worn and exasperated. “No, you don’t. I love you. Christopher and I are here with you almost every night we have available. You keep the cereal we like stocked in your pantry just in case we’re here for breakfast. I keep those weird vegan protein bars you like. You have a drawer in my room with sweatpants and t-shirts and a spare uniform just in case. I broke up with Ana and haven’t even thought about another person in months because...I don’t want anyone else.”
Buck swallows hard.
“I don’t understand…”
“I’m in love with you, Evan.”
“...Eddie...”
“I mean it. And you don’t — you don’t have to say anything back or...or try to let me down gently, or whatever. I just...I need you to know. You always say you’re alone and that no one ever really wants you. I need you to know you’re wrong.”
Neither of them says anything for a moment, and Eddie busies himself with his beer, trying desperately not to let the panic take over him, trying desperately not to feel like he has to pack up his stuff and grab Christopher and get out of there immediately. He’ll give Buck space if he needs it, but only if he asks.
God, he hopes he doesn’t ask.
“I love you, too,” Buck says eventually, quietly. Eddie looks up at him. “I’ve just...I really like you, you know? This thing we have with each other. It’s special...and it’s different. And I’ve always known that, so I just...I never wanted to risk losing it. I’m so used to people I love leaving, Eddie.”
“I’m never leaving you,” Eddie says instantly, confidently. Buck stares at him wide-eyed, before the softest smile Eddie’s ever seen spreads on his face.
“I know.”
Eddie’s pretty sure that they should kiss, pretty sure that that’s the thing that they’re supposed to do next, but he can’t move. He’s fixed to his spot against the counter and Buck seems fixed to his spot in front of the sink, because all they can do is stare at each other, grinning like two fools in love — because that’s what they are, aren’t they?
Eventually, Christopher’s movie ends, and he calls out for Buck and Eddie.
“Dad, Buck, can we watch another one?” He calls, a hint of mischief in his voice. He knows he’s usually only allowed one movie and then he and Eddie have to head home after dinner. Buck grins.
“How about I pack a bag and we head back to yours and we can start another one there. Maybe I can even...stay a couple of days?”
“You moving in already?” Eddie teases and Buck rolls his eyes.
“Well, you’ve only been begging me to for months now.”
“Yeah, yeah. Sure. Go pack a bag and I’ll get Chris ready.”
Buck nods and then turns to run up the stairs to grab his bag — but he stops. He turns around and looks at Eddie, a small smile on his lips and a glint in his eyes, cheeks a little red.
“Um,” He mumbles, taking two large steps to close the gap between them and ducking to the side. He leans in quickly and presses a shy kiss to Eddie’s cheek and then steps away.
Eddie stares at him, a little stunned. He’s never known Buck to be shy with physical affection, especially not with someone he likes, but it’s endearing and sweet and breaking Eddie’s brain a little with the realization that they’re actually doing it. They’re crossing this line.
Buck spins around and disappears up the stairs into his loft before Eddie can say anything, leaving his mind speeding a thousand miles a second into the future, imagining all of their future kisses, their future dinners, Buck moving in officially, no longer having to travel 20 minutes to see each other, no longer spending the night alone in his bed wishing Buck was there with him, waking up to his face in the morning, kissing him goodnight.
Maybe they’ll even get married. Eddie would like that. He’s pretty sure Buck would too.
Not that he’s in any kind of rush.
He’s got everything he could ever want right here, right now.

Still tumbling headfirst through my 9-1-1 re-watch and now I'm throwing this into the abyss: the parallel between 3.12 (Fools) and 2.01 (Under Pressure).
I know it is well established that 70% of Ana's existence is just to parallel Buck in regards to Eddie, but I still don't think we talk about it enough! It's kind of unhinged?! Fools is an insane episode for setting up the Buck/Ana dichotomy, and the context within which that dichotomy is explored is essentially what is revisited in season 4.
Don't be fooled (lmao), this is absolutely a there's-no-way-buddie-isn't-endgame post.
All the rest under the cut, because ya girl is about to monologue.
Okay, so the episode opens immediately on the group of kids trying to be internet famous. These are the same kids in 2.01 with the whole microwave and cement fiasco. It's easy to make this connection because they had a memorable emergency. Right off the bat the show is more or less forcing a recollection of what happened in 2.01 onto the viewers, and since it is literally the opening minutes of the episode, that collective acknowledgement now exists, and will be (at least it was for me) a parallel undercutting the entire episode.
Let's summarize real quick what this episode was about. Yes, Ana is introduced, and it seems like the show is hinting at Eddie maybe moving on with her now or in the future. But the main storyline follows Eddie and Christopher, and Eddie figuring out how to show his son how to navigate the world with CP. It's important that this episode isn't just Eddie-centric, it's Eddie and Christopher-centric.
Additionally, the emergencies in this episode are about relationships either not being what they seem, or pulling through when it seemed like they were doomed from the start (the kid at the beginning "needing new friends," the woman who got shot by her husband, the woman who got stuck in the window on her first date). Yes these relate to Eddie and Ana, obviously, but dare I say this also relates to Eddie and Buck? Humor me here:
Besides the 2.01 implication at the beginning of the episode, there's a moment with Eddie and Carla walking through the hallway of Christopher's new school. It's probably tinhatty and purely conspiratorial, but the first thing out of Eddie's mouth is about the room number 201. I just . . . I spit out my drink. It could have been any room number - in fact they could have worked the script a dozen different ways so as not to necessitate a room number - but they do and then they just happen to land on 201? *side-eye intensifies*
(side-bar: there's something about the science teacher, in a classroom painted with solar system paraphernalia, talking about how "Christopher tells everybody Tsunamis are no big deal," literally bringing Buck into the scene even though he isn't physically there. Hello seemingly pointless dialogue???? Things that make you go "Hmmmm.")
And the parallels don't stop there! I know this one has been mentioned before on this site but it bears repeating for this post. When Eddie and Ana meet, we have yet another callback to episode 2.01, when Ana correctly guesses Eddie is short for Edmundo, and Eddie says, "Most people guess Eduardo." Most people who, Eddie? I know one person and that person is Buck, and it occurred back in 2.01 when they were still in the thick of their enemies to lovers speed-run. Once again Buck is insinuated into the space without being physically present.
And then the scene with the woman stuck in the window, and Eddie and Buck divided on either side of her. The way this scene starts disastrously but ultimately ends on a positive note. The way Buck airs Eddie's laundry out of nowhere after remarking how he himself is indeed single. The way the scene tells the audience that even when things go wrong, everything will work out in the end if you're with the right person. The way the next scene is Eddie and Buck sitting down to discuss Christopher and the skateboarding incident.
I know I'm deep in crackheadery territory at this point in the hiatus but I cannot get the weird feeling out of my gut when I think about this episode. Superficially, yes, it appeared to be about Eddie and Ana's rocky start to their relationship. But with all the mentions of 2.01 and knowing what I know now about how heavily Buck and Ana are paralleled, the ep starts to feel like a metaphor for Buck and Eddie: the rocky start to their relationship, how far they've come, the fact that with the right person everything works out (see: the advice Eddie chooses to follow regarding the skateboarding incident)
It's almost like they created that divergence on purpose. They gave us two episodes, one where Buck met Eddie and things went wrong, and another where Eddie met Ana and things went wrong, where both conflicts are eventually resolved, as if they want us to consider their standing in Eddie's life side-by-side. They tacked 2.01 as an undercurrent to the events of 3.12 from the very beginning because they want us to pit these two against each other. Not to mention heavily, heavily foreshadowing Eddie's main conflicts in the next season, which we couldn't see when Fools aired, but with season 4 hindsight is 20/20.
I feel like the show just knocks us over the head with it sometimes. The parallels demand us to consider which of these two people, who represent different things Eddie is looking for in his life, is the correct fit. And (especially considering season 4) it unsubtly suggests that the surface appeal of Ana is chronically incomparable to what Evan Buckley brings to the table for the Diaz family. Eddie spent the entire episode searching for very specific advice regarding Christopher, advice he wouldn't know until he heard it, and for that matter of the three people who offered advice about Christopher, Buck was the only person Eddie actually requested it from. I don't fault Carla because she needed to say what she said, but it was still mostly unsolicited. We won't even talk about Ana and her fundamentally incorrect assumptions about Christopher's needs. But we see Eddie seeking out Buck's opinion and support, and just . . . holy cow. We know how it ends, too.
Ana and Buck just aren't even on the same level, they never have been, and I don't think anybody could be. And I think by the end of season 4, Eddie is finally starting to realize this, too.

SaL anon here my friend, happy to wish us luck on the upcoming episode, on this very normal day where the 911 PR team absolutely did not choose to unleash chaos. Here I was just hoping to enjoy the conclusion of the cruise disaster saga, especially after last week's heartstopping Bathena performance, but nooooo, I won't even get to enjoy 1 millisecond of satisfaction before I'm gnawing my arm off waiting for next week's episode and an explanation for why Buddie are *waves hand nonsensically at stills* THAT.
Anyway, I know I should remember the mantra about getting our hopes up but I can't help it for tonight, the last two episodes have been so incredibly solid and everything I love about 911 that I can't help but raise the bar from where it was (somewhere around the Earth's core) to something at least knee high. So cheers friend, here's hoping any post episode drinking is optional, not necessary 🍷🍷🍷!!!
Not me hitting post limit before 4:30 in the afternoon 🙄. This has been me for HOURS
Tumblr media
Sorry I have fandom shit going on Tumblr, and not a lot of actual work to keep me busy. I think the post limit should be at least 500 posts a day. Just let me be unhinged!! I even scheduled some posts out to different days to avoid this but here we are. I need 911 and FHJY to not air on back-to-back days for realsies.
I didn't even catch those stills at first since my app is still not working so I can't actually see my dash so I was just chillin in the d20 tag when I suddenly noticed 911 was trending and decided to check what was up and WHOOOOO BOY! What IS all that?! Why are they like this?! They're killing meeeee!
ANYWAY
That mess is for next week. This cruise disaster arc is ABSOLUTELY a veeeeeerrrry close second to the tsunami arc for me. That one edges it out because we got to see more of everyone on the team doing rescues while this one (DESERVEDLY) focused more on Bobby and Athena, but MAN was it gripping television! I laughed, I cried, I legit clapped and cheered when Buck and Eddie showed up to get Bobby and the little boy, I mourned for Wes the security guard, it was all SO, so, so good. And we got badass Bobby on rescue duty!! Athena taking charge and taking NO shit from anyone! We got the firefam being a FAMILY which includes bickering, tattling, gentle ribbing, and having each other's backs because you know each other better than anyone else. I had a GREAT time.
I know we have been pretty good at keeping our expectations down but for right now, I'm felling a little more confident in the show as a whole to deliver good firefam stuff so I'm raising that bar a little bit. As for Buddie, well. I guess we'll see? I'd be lying if I said I was excited about seeing them dating other people AGAIN, no matter if it's supposed to "set the stage" or whatever for Buddie because I just think going the route we SHOULD have had after the shooting. Getting them both keeping their feelings realizations secret from each other and then having a third party confession come out with Chim/Maddie and Hen each getting one side of it and then accidentally cluing each other in has a better feel for me, especially with the delicious flavor of Eddie still having a gf at the moment. But I'm reserving judgement FOR NOW, on how it could ultimately play out for Buddie. It might be fine in the end with how it all comes together, but I'm not going to "settle" for just being happy if Buck comes out and taking whatever relationship we are given instead of the one that's been built up since season 2. But I'm also not throwing in the towel because we don't know where it's going yet. I'm firmly on the "fine but I'm going to complain the whole time" train at the moment with regards to Buck finally dating a man but for some god-forsaken reason it's not Eddie. (At least we lucked the FUCK out and someone else gave AK a job so we don't have to put up with THAT nonsense again.)
For now, I'm going to revel in the show ABSOLUTELY coming back with a bang and feeling like the 911 and firefam we all know and love and have DEEPLY missed. The difference between this arc and that blimp emergency is LAUGHABLE. Bless Tim for coming back and giving us this incredible arc and really showcasing Angela and Peter and the Bathena relationship. I'm excited to see what's next!

Yes! I hate the comments, because they almost always come out of nowhere. Like, if you're teasing each other and exaggerating flaws about each other, okay, but most of the ones I remember were uncalled for just to make a clever comment (and I've also got a substantial problem with the crossover bc of that). You can see the difference in how Eddie teases him in s4 (the "oh, that's why you're reading a book" was the right amount of teasing, I think, and his tone wasn't dismissive. They both were in on the joke and Buck even retaliated).
Had honestly forgotten about Maddie (my bad). But she sometimes falls into the comments thing too (judging him about Abby when she just arrived, not trying to understand why he's so set on getting back to work, the "why does every woman you date leave the state"-- which, really? You say that to your brother who you know has abandonment issues unwillingly compounded by your actions and also your parents' behavior about something he's not even allowed to know about? This is the comedic relief thing again, and it really bugs me). Please, DO elaborate on Chim!
Yeah, I appreciate that Athena is very matter of fact about how she acts, and she takes other people's behavior at face value: you act like a dumbass, you get treated like a dumbass; you grow up as a person, she congratulates you on it. I think the difference with Bobby is that 1, she isn't exactly his superior at work, 2, she had a family of her own (even with all the drama going on in s1), while Bobby probably latched onto Buck because he had no one else and was still mourning. He at first wasn't able to find a balance between their working and personal relationship, but I think as of 3x18 (when Buck snaps at him bc he feels Bobby is overstepping again) he's getting better at it (and he was kinda right about the crane thing in 4x14, even if he didn't quite get the reason behind it). Sure, I don't love that he didn't correct him that he wasn't talking about Athena but Buck himself being too often at the hospital, but well, can't have it all.
Digressing for a minute: don't you think it's funny how we all accepted that there's a father-son relationship between those two characters based on that "pops" comment from s1 even if nobody ever acknowledges it as such, when people dismiss buddie being romantic even when there's way more, and more overt, proof of it? But anyway.
Yeah, I remember the "I feel like if I had done that you'd be yelling at me". No wonder he was insecure in 2x01, they often still dismiss him (even when he has a lot of great ideas, the way he found the baby in 4x01 comes to mind), and then this guy comes in and they all just respect him even though he's a newbie?
Yeah, as someone who has been there (which is probably why I latched onto this character) it's heartbreaking how lonely he is. I felt it when he was taking to Taylor about meaningful relationships-- because I feel like he wasn't necessarily talking about a romantic partner, but just wanted someone to be his person just like everyone else had. I'm demi romantic, and I'm always scared that I'll be left behind because everyone else is in romantic relationships that they value more than our friendship-- I think that's what he's feeling. Yeah, they're a big family and all, but at the end of the day everyone else goes home to someone and he's left alone. If he wants to celebrate something, he has to contend with the fact the the others may be too busy with their own lives to just go with him without planning for it in advance (other problem I have with that goddamn episode: you can't go to a bar for 1 hour? Like yeah, Eddie had a time sensitive matter to attend to - he invited Buck anyway - but the others iirc where all "yeah, I wanna spend the evening with my so", which fair, but not even an hour?).
Which is why I love the direction they took in s4b. I was honestly scared that Eddie dating would make Buck feel even more lonely and left behind, and then the mfer just went and made them closer!!!! I loved how extra that was, I'm sorry. I mean, they could have simply showed that the girlfriend didn't interfer with their friendship, but instead the went one step farther, without really any necessity, and made their relationship closer. I'm baffled. That's bonkers! Whatever the state of their relationship, that's gotta be huge to Buck. Can't wait for him to process it in s5!
I agree. S4 Eddie knows exactly how much is too much when it comes to Buck and I hope he tells the others off when they cross the line in future episodes.
Maddie often walks that fine line between being too overprotective and being judgy. I’ll allow the Abby-hate and even concern about Buck going back to work too early as sisterly defensiveness. She definitely shouldn’t have made that comment about every women he dates leaving, but then again, she was the first one who actually dug into why Buck was in therapy in S4, “Yeah, I think he’s better at that than we think. Seeming fine.”
The relationship between siblings stretches that boundary often, and I think Maddie handled and apologized for Daniel the best she could, given the fact that she hid it from Buck, which...don’t know what was going through her head then, but whatever. In my opinion, Maddie (S4) is up there with Eddie in understanding Buck, but I definitely understand where you’re coming from.
Okay, so rant about how Chim handled the secret. Like siblings, I know being Maddie’s boyfriend is a different commitment than being Buck’s friend, but at the same time, he never really gave Maddie that ultimatum that I would’ve expected. But whatever, Chim keeps the secret, fine. Except no, he doesn’t. He tells a bomber of all people, and tries, adamantly, to tell Albert, who has the good sense to run away.
Chim’s right, Maddie did put him in a tough spot, but it was still his decision. He says sorry once and then begs Buck to forgive her – doesn’t even give him time to process it. Unlike Hen, there was no, “marching to the beat of her own drum.” here. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a big deal, comparatively. But I’m no Chim apologist when we’re talking about people treating Buck with respect either.
You’re right on Athena for sure. She has a way of detaching herself from the drama while still being a vital part of the situation (I love her, if you couldn’t tell). Oooh, interesting point about the father-son relationship. I never really thought about it like that, but perhaps one day we’ll get Bobby and Buck acknowledging their relationship further than a few misplaced comments of concern? Maybe?
I can only see Eddie and Buck’s relationship getting closer after S4B. There is literally no other direction for it to go, and a part of me is glad they got all the yelling and fighting out of the way early on (hopefully). Perhaps Buck will have someone to come home to? Metaphorically speaking, because I don’t think we’ll get a Buddie confirmation until S6 at the earliest. There’s so much growing left for Buck to do, emotionally, not logically, and I’m very excited for it!!

 THE SIGHTS OF CHRISTMAS
They’re going to be late, Eddie realizes as he glances at the clock in the dashboard/panel behind the steering wheel. He hopes that they’ll be late enough that everyone is already deep in conversation or too engaged in their drinks, food, or the music to pay much attention to them entering, so he can just set down Chris with the other kids and silently slide onto the bench next to Buck who’ll greet him with a soft smile.
Finally, he pulls up in front of the karaoke bar, taking note of the nicely decorated tree someone has put up next to the entrance. On the other side, they’ve put a giant blown-up Santa Claus and Eddie can’t help but shiver. It’s a nice idea that Chimney came up with, suggesting that they all get together at his and Maddie’s favorite karaoke bar for the Christmas themed family evening on their free day. He’s heard a lot of good things about it from Buck, who Eddie knows has been there with them already. Eddie just wishes he were in a better mood to enjoy it today. Which is one of the reasons why he’d like his team and their families not to pay too close attention to him.
He sighs, putting his car into park and turning the key in the ignition. He turns back to look at Chris in the backseat. Seeing his son looking outside with excitement in his eyes lifts his mood a little. He hopes Chris has fun tonight, even if he doubts that’ll apply to himself.
They have to pass the creepy Santa figure to get inside but once they do, Eddie finds that the decorations become a lot more tasteful. There are colorful lights, mostly, but also a few small Christmas trees in the corners. The music is turned lower in benefit of the children and the bar and the tables are lined with fir branches interspersed with ornaments in silver and red. Eddie likes it.
Chris moves away from him, prompting him to do the same but not waiting on him. Eddie follows Chris’s line of sight and sure enough, they’re all there already, sitting, talking, eating, and drinking at one of the tables. Two, no, three tables, pushed together.
It looks cozy, all of them huddled closely together on the chairs and benches surrounding the tables. Like a family, Eddie can’t help but think. It’s a thought he’s been having a lot lately. And he enjoys this little family that they made for themselves amongst the team.
 THE SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS
There’s still place on the bench right next to Buck. Eddie exhales in relief when he notices. Buck’s talking to Karen and Chimney but his eyes move through the room when he isn’t talking. Eddie doesn’t think they’re searching for something in particular but still, they lock onto Eddie’s as soon as they find them. Buck’s face breaks into a wide smile and he waves Eddie over to sit next to him. As if Eddie would choose to sit anywhere else.
He slides into the free seat and gets their group's attention as soon as they realize that Buck’s focus has shifted away from their conversation.
Chimney exclaims: “The lost son has returned!” the table erupting in laughter. It’s too much attention for the way Eddie is feeling today but Buck is still smiling at him, making it a lot more bearable.
“You came just in time. Athena and Hen are taking the stage to sing.”
Eddie lets his eyes wander across the room, taking note of the karaoke set up on the stage where, as Chimney said, Athena and Hen are picking up the microphones and getting ready to sing.
The music starts to come out of the speakers and it only takes Eddie a few seconds to recognize it.
 “Is that      ‘Feliz Navidad’    ?”
Buck laughs, letting his head fall onto Eddie’s shoulder. “Just wait what the others have chosen,” he murmurs in Eddie’s ear, careful that no one else hears it.
“So bad?” Eddie can’t help the smile that spreads over his lips. He finds that Athena’s and Hen’s singing voices might actually be good if they weren’t spending most of the time trying not to laugh. It’s lifting Eddie’s mood considerably seeing the two of them goofing off on stage.
“Not bad, just… you’ll see what I mean.” Buck nudges him with his leg. “You wanna order something in the meantime?”
Eddie looks over to where Chris is sitting with the other kids and takes note of the full glass already in front of him.
It seems nothing escapes Buck’s notice because he’s following Eddie’s line of sight and sighs, nudging him again. “Relax, they know not to serve the kids any alcohol.” He smiles. “Besides, he’s a responsible boy, he’ll probably only order soda the whole evening.”
 “That’s what I’m worried about.”
Buck laughs again. “We’ll make him sing a few songs at the karaoke machine and once you leave you won’t even notice his sugar high anymore.”
Eddie pretends to weigh the pros and cons of it but figures he can allow Chris an evening of way too sugary beverages.
Buck reaches for the menu and sets it down in front of him. While Eddie is sifting through the options, the last few notes play and Athena and Hen are leaving the stage. They are greeted by cheers and whoops from their group, accompanied by a few laughs, most of all Hen herself. There’s the sound of rustling of coats and scarves and bags all around and Eddie thinks it’s too much to be just from the two of them sitting back down. Looking up, he manages to catch Maddie grabbing Chimney’s hand on their way to the other end of the bar.
“Another one of ours?” Eddie directs towards Buck who only chuckles.
Eddie contemplates if Buck is already tipsy or if he’s just happy today. He hopes it’s the latter and not all of it is due to selfish reasons like liking the sound of his laugh.
Eddie doesn’t expect anything but a pretty good performance of the two of them after what he’s heard from Buck’s retellings but still, the performance blows him away. Their love and coordination translate directly to how their voices work together and harmonize. It’s obvious that they have some practice.
The song on the other hand…
“It’s very cliché,” Eddie admits just as Chimney’s belting “but this year I’ll give it to someone special”.
“Isn’t it a breakup song though?”
 Karen snorts.
“Don’t say that so loud,” Buck says, barely containing his grin, “and don’t tell them.”
 Eddie motions zipping his lips.
“I thought it was about finding new love after a breakup,” Karen chimes in, “and that’s rather fitting, isn’t it?”
Buck points a finger at Karen like she’s made a good point. Which she has, Eddie must admit. It      does     seem rather fitting when you look at it that way.
 THE SMELLS OF CHRISTMAS
He takes note of the menu that’s still in front of him. He’s skimming through the options again, just as clueless about what to get as he was before.
“What are you drinking?” he finally asks Buck.
“Oh, mulled wine,” Buck slides his mug over, “you can try some.”
Eddie lifts the mug. Long before it touches his lips, he’s already assaulted by the smell of cloves, orange, and cinnamon above the slightly acidic smell of wine. It smells good, and once he nips at it, it tastes just as well, but he knows he won’t drink any more of it.
“Oh, you need to drive,” Buck remembers, pulling the mug back. “Apparently the hot chocolate is not too bad here, if you want something festive.”
 Eddie nods. “Sounds good.”
Just then, a waiter comes up to their table, leaving a few platters of food behind. It smells delicious, and Eddie’s thinking of getting something to eat too. But he’ll ask Chris about it first. For now, he merely catches the waiter before he leaves and asks him if he can order a drink.
Buck digs into his own plate, as do all those who have ordered food. It’s quieter once half of their table is eating, but the conversation is still lively and Eddie notices that he doesn’t mind any longer. They’re his family, and even if he arrived not feeling well, he enjoys their company enough to be in a slightly less foul mood.
 THE TASTES OF CHRISTMAS
“You want some?” Buck asks and lifts his fork in Eddie’s direction.
It’s instinct, really, nothing he actively thinks about when he opens his mouth and bites into the brown mass sticking to Buck’s fork. The chocolate is melting on his tongue, sweet and soft. Eddie wants to ask for more until his brain catches up.
 “Is that fudge?”
 Buck grins.
“You eat fudge with a fork?”
Buck’s brows furrow in confusion and it’s cute. Eddie stifles a laugh.
He feels like Buck would follow this up with a remark of his own if the waiter hadn’t interrupted them by bringing Eddie’s mug. If he were at home he would’ve put more marshmallows than he got but it’s still enough to melt into the cocoa and alter the taste. There’s a hint of cinnamon too. After taking a few sips of his own, he dutifully slides it over to Buck. It’s only fair after Buck shared his own with him.
“Mhm,” Buck sighs, “it really is good.”
“Don’t finish my drink. Leave some for me.”
Buck turns to him with a twinkle in his eyes.
But Eddie doesn’t get to hear what he meant to say, for Chris appears on his other side with a question on his lips.
“I forgot my bag in the car.”
Ok, it’s not exactly a question, but Eddie still hears it loud and clear.
“I’ll get it for you, mijo,” he says, already reaching for his coat.
“I’m coming with you,” Buck joins in and sure enough, he follows Eddie when he excuses himself from the table and soon the two of them find themselves outside of the bar.
 THE TOUCH OF CHRISTMAS
The air is still as cold as it was when they arrived earlier, sending a chill through Eddie despite the fact he's wearing a coat. It annoys him that he even has to wear one at all.
“You think we’ll have some snow this year?” he can’t help but ask.
Buck shrugs. “None that would stay on the ground.”
“Hm.” Eddie clicks his car keys. “Chris would love it anyway. And if it doesn’t stay on the ground, even better. That would be a rough shift.”
Buck laughs, leaning onto the top of the car door once Eddie opens it. “Can you imagine working somewhere up north like New York?”
"Work would be hell during winter,” Eddie agrees. He grabs Chris’ backpack from between the seats and goes to close the door again. The metal feels icy. He clicks his keys again before looking up at Buck expectantly. There’s something weird happening on Buck’s face, Eddie can tell.
“Are we missing another performance?” he asks instead, neither of them leaving their place.
At that, Buck comes alive again, scratching his neck. “I’m not sure. I lost track.”
 “Did you sing already?”
“Why?” A dangerous glint appears in Buck’s eyes, “you wanna sing with me?”
“No,” Eddie laughs, “I’d rather leave with my dignity still intact.”
“Come on, Eddie. We’re gonna sing ‘Baby it’s cold outside’ and you can let out all your frustration over the cold weather.”
Eddie levels him with a glare but he feels that he doesn’t quite mean it. And Buck knows it if the grin on his face is any indication.
“I’m not frustrated with the cold weather,” Eddie deflects, “and that’s not what that song is about.”
Buck smirks. “So what song would you rather we sing? ‘Driving home for Christmas'? ‘Santa Baby’? But we’re not singing the ‘Santa Buddy’ version.”
“Oh God no,” Eddie groans, “none of them. What about ‘All I want for Christmas is You’?”
Buck gapes at him. “That’s your choice?”
 Eddie shrugs.
“I thought ‘Baby it’s cold outside’ was too romantic for you, and you’re choosing ‘All I want for Christmas is You’?”
 Eddie smiles. “I don’t mind.”
He starts to move back towards the bar but when Buck doesn’t seem to follow him, he grabs Buck’s hand. It’s cold, and Eddie might be frustrated with the cold weather after all. But this time Buck follows him back inside.

Buddie First Kiss
(Nighttime in Buck's apartment. Opening shot, from a short distance, a set of keys on the bar side of the island in Buck's kitchen. The door opens, Buck enters the apartment pulling his keys from the deadbolt.  Eddie stands behind him in the doorway just outside, staring down. Buck walks over to the island, sets his keys on the counter, phone on the charger, turns around. Eddie is still standing in the doorway, now looking at Buck) BUCK: Aren't you coming in? (Eddie walks into the room, now staring at his own keys on the counter) BUCK: How 'bout a beer? (Eddie shakes his head. As Buck walks over and shuts the front door-) BUCK: Come on, I know Christopher's staying at his friend's, we're not working tomorrow, so you don't have to rush off.  Have a beer and maybe a little Mighty Fight Fed? EDDIE: No, I'm good (Eddie puts his hand on his keys. Buck walks up behind Eddie, puts his hand on top of Eddie's on the counter) BUCK: But you're not good. You said almost nothing on the ride over, not a word on the way up. Something's eating at you, what's the problem? (In a quick move, Eddie grabs Buck by the front of his shirt, pushes him up against the door, Buck slides down a little. Buck's face is pure shock) EDDIE: (angry but not loud) YOU. You're the problem. Why do you do it? I was fine, getting the ready for the ladder and setting the lines up. But you, you have to walk twenty feet on a narrow ledge three stories up, without a line, and nothing set up on the ground. One slip and you're gone forever. BUCK: (a little angry) Our side was cleared, the hall was gonna be blocked, and with that many people it looked like you had a 2-man job, and you had all the safety lines. EDDIE: (Louder, in Buck's face) GONNA be blocked! LOOKED like a 2-man job! I'm not a kid, if I need help, I can ask. But Full Buck fears no risk and I’m forced to watch. Don't you have any idea how much I care about you? (Eddie is breathing heavily. He looks Buck in the eyes and kisses him hard. Buck's face reverts to shock, but he quickly responds to Eddie, Buck puts an arm around Eddie's back, his other hand on Eddie's neck.  They continue to kiss, several times, lasting almost 10 seconds. Eddie is still holding Buck against the door, when he stops and looks down. Both men are breathing heavily now) BUCK: Eddie . . . Eddie, I feel the same way . . . I want you . . . I didn't think . . . (Eddie lets go and pulls back, Buck's arms reaching out for him as he goes) EDDIE: Didn't think, what a surprise! BUCK: Come on, Eddie, don’t. (Eddie turns around to the counter, leans with his hands on the corners, he takes a couple of deep breaths. As he stands upright-) EDDIE: I can't do this. It's too much. (Eddie reaches for his keys, starts to pull them off the counter. Buck is there in a flash, slaps the keys out of Eddie's hand back to the counter, grabs Eddie under the arms, pushes him against the wall next to the door and presses body against Eddie's. Eddie doesn't resist, just stares over Buck's shoulder) BUCK: No, no. You do not get to prove we're in love and then walk out. EDDIE: Let me go, Buck. BUCK: No. I'm not gonna just let go. EDDIE: How long do you think you can hold me here? BUCK: I'll stand here all night til we get this straightened out. EDDIE: Let me go, Buck. BUCK: Not until you promise not to leave before you and I are settled. EDDIE: And if there's nothing to settle? BUCK: Nothing to settle . . . That's a load of crap and you know it. PROMISE! EDDIE: Okay, okay, I promise. (Buck eases away from Eddie, but keeps his hands resting on Eddie's shoulders) BUCK: Eddie, even before tonight we knew we cared a lot about each other. I look at you and I wanna be with you. We have so much together, more now, how can you even think of walking away? (Eddie looking fierce) EDDIE: It'll be tough, but I can if I have to. BUCK: (in a rush) But, you don't have to. I'm sorry I scared you. I can do better. (**Buck leans his lips into Eddie's neck, starts kissing his neck as he speaks. Eddie's eyes close, feeling the pleasure, he leans his head back, breathing a little harder**) BUCK: **(slower, passionately) I will do better, Eddie, I mean it. I'll do whatever it takes, whatever you want. I'll do anything for you. I'd carry you up a mountain, walk through flames for you** (At the last line, Eddie's head snaps down. he pushes Buck hard enough he falls back into the counter.  Buck breathing hard, half-standing, leaning against the counter Eddie takes deliberate steps towards him) EDDIE: (really angry) That's exactly what I don't want. You're no good to me dead, or to Christopher.  One too many risks and I might have to watch you die. Christopher and I would have to stand with Maddie and your friends as we plant you six feet under. I guess I thought you'd stay alive for Chris, if not for me. You'd fight for him. (Buck still breathing hard, distraught and in shock at Eddie’s temper, clutching the counter, almost in tears) BUCK: (pleading) Please, Eddie EDDIE: (catching his breath, sighs) Okay, Okay, calm down (Eddie helps seat Buck in a bar stool. He walks over to a cabinet, pulls out a whiskey bottle and two shot glasses, sets them on the counter. He looks at Buck for a second. He fills the shot glasses) EDDIE: Here. (Eddie hands Buck his shot. Buck hunched over, stares at it like he doesn't recognize it, then downs it fast. Eddie does his slower. Buck breathes more controlled, then holds his shot glass out to Eddie, for another) EDDIE: (putting the bottle away) No, no more whiskey; I know where more shots leads us at this point. BUCK: Such a terrible a thing? EDDIE: Not settling a thing. BUCK: (looking down, after a second) Okay, then. While you're up, grab me a beer from the fridge. (Eddie shakes his head, gets two beers from the fridge, opens them, hands one to Buck. Buck takes a swig) BUCK: Yes, I would fight for Christopher. But it's because you're part of him. When I look at him, I see the bravest and happiest parts of you staring back at me. How could I not love your little boy? Of course, he's important to me, but Christopher's not the one I fell in love with. EDDIE: Fell in love. I wanted to think it was possible, but I thought you only wanted to be best buds. BUCK: I thought that, too. You were married, had a kid. What was I supposed to think? EDDIE: I've seen you with Taylor, but your thing with Abby made me think you couldn't be into me. BUCK: With Abby? Why Abby? You weren't even around when we were together. EDDIE: The absent girlfriend who held your heart, you didn't even try to move on for ages. It was like she was the only one who could make you feel like that. It's LA, lots of chances out there, and you didn't see them. Didn't see me. (Eddie takes a sip of his beer) BUCK: Yeah, it took therapy for me to sort out my feelings. All my feelings, including some "latent feelings towards men," Dr. Copeland said. Guess what relationship in my life triggered that discussion? EDDIE: Oh. BUCK: Yeah. But you were hung up on me and Abby. EDDIE: Okay, yes, I was. The night of the Pacific Western accident finally convinced me. BUCK: A train wreck. How fitting. EDDIE: Yeah. She's back in your life for an instant and you're already ignoring a triage decision, ignoring your own safety, just to please her. Watching you hanging on that unstable train car that could crash down at any second, yes, I was scared, but I was angry, too. I'd just changed my will to make you Chris's guardian. I knew it was right for him. I was trying to figure out the best way to tell you. But there I am, seeing you with a power saw, dangling 75 feet above the ground, risking your life, and I think, “He's made himself expendable . . . again . . . so maybe he can save Abby's fiancé. Am I an idiot, or what?” BUCK: You have no idea how important you were to me that night. I guess I should've let you know.  Okay, maybe I felt I owed Abby something, and saving Sam would be a weird repayment of the debt. EDDIE: (mutters, low voice) Unprofessional. (Buck ignores this) BUCK: During the rescue task, you know your mind is on nothing else, it can't be. Afterwards, when they were taking Sam to the ambulance, with Abby next to him, but looking back at me, it was like acid in the back of my throat and being forced to swallow it slowly, and it hurt. A lot. But the first thing I saw after the ambulance door closed was you. You were worried about me, how I felt. I still hurt badly, but you made me feel like I had good things in my life, that there was love. You were the balance that let me go on. EDDIE: You asked why I waited to tell you about the change in my will. The Abby thing was a big part.  But you've done this other times, too. I'm not handling it well and I'm not sure I can. (Buck looks down, slowing turning the beer bottle) BUCK: Like when? EDDIE: The rope rescue; Jumping from that other apartment building. BUCK: Only option left. You tied the rope. You made the jump, twice. EDDIE: The sanitizer factory. BUCK: Got lost and found the last worker. You'd have done the same. EDDIE: He said he told you to save yourself when he got trapped. BUCK: And leave him to burn to death alone? You'd have done the same. EDDIE: Climbing that crane with a sniper out there. At least I didn't have to watch that one in motion. BUCK: You were in the hospital with a GSW. I was raw, I couldn't stand to see someone else hurt. EDDIE: But that's what it always is, Evan. Everyone else's life is always more important than yours. You do think you're expendable. I can face danger, but your attitude is too painful for me to live with. (After a hesitation, Eddie reaches for his keys) BUCK: You do it, too. EDDIE: What? BUCK: You heard me. You do it, too. EDDIE: I don't think I'm expendable. (Buck looks up at Eddie, suddenly miffed) BUCK: No, you're the know-it-all hero who has to do it his way, risks be damned. EDDIE: (shakes his head) I'm not. BUCK: When that well collapsed in on you, I went insane. I started wildly clawing and digging at the hole shouting your name over and over. Bobby had to drag me away and hold me lying on the ground until I calmed down. But you know what I saw when I was madly digging that was driving me nuts? A cut safety line. You cut the line. Deliberately. You want scared? I was at the other end when the line went slack. EDDIE: Okay, I never knew how I scared you. But down in that hole, I couldn't leave. I had cut through the old well to get to him. I had just touched him; the water was rising. I couldn't be pulled out then, I had to cut the line. BUCK: How long, Eddie? How long would it have taken to get out, check your gear, and get you back down with an intact line. You would've been up in another 5 seconds. Two, maybe three minutes tops, for everything else including getting back down. More time than it took Chim to suit up, gear up, and get down that hole. Except you would've had your line and Chim wouldn't have had to go down. We got Chim and the kid out okay, it was only the need for a second trip that damn near cost you your life. You had to do it your way. EDDIE: (a little testy) I was down there by myself and had to make decisions with spotty communications. I did what I thought was best. We all have to make decisions like that sometimes. BUCK: Yes, we do. You decided to volunteer for the rescue. You decided to break safety protocol. You decided to cut the line and endanger your life. You wanna dump me for taking too many risks. You do it, too. EDDIE: One time, Buck, not like you. One time under pressure, in unusual circumstances. BUCK:  Oh, no, no, no you don't. It wasn't the only time. The gas explosions in Doheny Park, the day the system went down; another time you scared the crap out of me. You climbed up a drainpipe to the roof of a burning two story house. You complain about me walking on a ledge today when you walked 50 feet across the spine of a pitched roof with no line to make a rope entry, yes, a rope rescue, into a burning room the kid wasn't even in anymore. I thought I was gonna lose it watching you walk that roof.  I DID lose it when the last gas explosion went off upstairs and we didn't know where you were. I was ready to grab an extinguisher, climb that broken ladder on the truck and make the jump into the house to help you. EDDIE: Not a good example, Buck. You admit you were prepared to kill or cripple yourself in a half-cocked rescue attempt. Again, to help me. You were expendable cuz maybe you might help me,   BUCK: But I didn't climb the ladder, Bobby wouldn't have let me anyway. And I didn't walk that roof in full gear, either, when a gust of wind could've killed you. There’ve been other times, too. But I don't complain no matter how frightened I am. It's not an issue in how much I care about you. That's the difference; you do it, too, and all I do is have your back. EDDIE: So that's part of having your back? Say nothing about being scared to death, just live with it? BUCK: I'm just saying if you think I believe I'm expendable and it frightens you, well, sometimes when your heroics put you in danger, I admit I'm terrified. You aren't as careful as you could be. EDDIE: Then can't we just be coworkers, before it's gets to be too much, and stop scaring each other. (Eddie picks up his keys from the bar) BUCK: (head down again) You promised. EDDIE: Buck . . . (Buck looks up with a serious and determined look) BUCK: You promised not to leave my place tonight until we were settled. I'm no relationship expert, but I know that "settled" doesn't look like this. (Eddie looks down) EDDIE: I'm not sure what more I can say right now to get this settled. (Buck, still looking at Eddie smacks his hand on the bar just hard enough to get Eddie's head to snap up) BUCK: Not 'This', Eddie, 'US'. I want 'US' settled. I want us; you and me together. I know you wanted that, too. After the lawsuit you asked if I thought about how my actions affected us. Well, I'm asking you that now. (Eddie tosses his keys back on the bar, Buck looks a little relieved) EDDIE: It's more than just my actions, Buck. We have to live with danger in our job, I accept that. But when you took that chance today, just to help me, not save someone, I was almost too scared to be able to function. I felt like if you fell, I should just jump myself, like if you died it was my fault. BUCK: But I didn't fall, I made it with no problem. And you functioned at your usual peak efficiency.  We were able to get everyone down safely, in time. Together we did that. Look, you admit we deal with danger all the time. But now you want to walk away from something good, maybe even great, something we both want, out of fear of being afraid? You're the bravest man I know, I don’t get it, letting being afraid interfere with living. (Eddie steps away from the bar and faces away from Buck) EDDIE: Okay, I admit I get afraid. I fear for my family. I worry about Chris all the time, about my abuela getting older. My parents, my sisters, Tia Pepa. I've already lost my wife. I don’t think I can handle much more. (Buck leans back in the stool and pushes his legs out) BUCK: And what? You're gonna cut me out? You think you can surgically remove me from the list? (Sarcastic Laugh) You're a good medic, Eddie, but not that good. I don't believe you can cut me out, or that you really want to. And I'm gonna fight it. I haven't come this far to fold. Like I said, don't expect me to just let go. (Eddie turns slowly to face Buck-) EDDIE: Right. It's never easy with you, is it. BUCK: I guess not. I'm kinda a mess. But you knew that already. (Buck and Eddie stare at each other for a long moment. Eddie sets his phone on the counter by to his keys) EDDIE: If I'm staying, I'm gonna need a shower. (Eddie turns toward the stairs and begins to go up. Cut to Buck staring at the beer in his hand on the bar) BUCK: Yeah, of course, go ahead. You know where everything is. (Cut to Eddie near the top of the stairs, he stops and turns to look down at Buck) EDDIE: Aren't you coming? (Eddie barely raises his eyebrows, then turns to climb the last steps) (Cut to Buck at the bar, stunned, looking up the stairs, mouth slightly open. He shakes his head quickly once, looks around. He grabs the two beers from the counter and heads up the stairs, taking them two at a time)
(Morning in Buck's apartment. Buck -sleeveless t-shirt, sweat shorts- at the coffee maker next to the range pouring coffee into two mugs. Knock at the door) BUCK: Ye-ah. (clearly in a good mood) (FROM OUTSIDE): Eats Beats! BUCK: (finishing pouring the coffee) Be right there. (Buck opens the door to the delivery guy) BUCK: Good morning. DELIVERY GUY: Mornin'. BUCK: So, found the place and got in okay? DELIVERY GUY: No prob. Big brunch special from La Tiendita with chicken tortilla soup? Extra guac? BUCK: Yup, that's us. Wow, you got here fast. Not much traffic? DELIVERY GUY: Yeah, be careful, the soup's still real hot . . . muy caliente. BUCK: Thanks, here you go. Keep the change. (Buck hands the guy a twenty and takes the bag and the box) DELIVERY GUY: Thank You, sir. Enjoy your meal and have a great day. BUCK: You, too! (Buck closes the door with his foot, walks over to the bar and sets the food down on the counter, he grabs plates from the cabinet, opens the packages, starts dealing with the food. Cut to Eddie at the top of the stairs -bare foot, gym shorts, pulling on a tank top, hair's a mess- stretches his arms, starts down the stairs. Buck hears and looks up) BUCK: (big smile) Hey there. Coffee? EDDIE: Hey. Yeah. What time is it? (a little groggy, no smile) (**Buck picks up the two mugs from the counter, walks over to Eddie on the other side of the bar, hands Eddie his coffee**) BUCK: **There's a clock on the nightstand on your side of the bed. EDDIE: My side . . . It’s not there now. Must've fallen off. BUCK: Must've. It's a little past 10:30. Your phone's right there. Hope you're hungry.** (Buck takes a sip from his cup. Eddie gulps some, sets it down and picks up his phone) (**Buck transfers plates and bowls to the table, places already set**) EDDIE: **Yeah, I could eat. (while checking his phone) BUCK: Good, we should get it while it's hot.** (Buck slides his hand up the inside of Eddie's arm and gently holds Eddie's bicep. Eddie looks at the hand and looks up at Buck, almost confused. Slightly grinning, Buck ducks his head a little to look up into Eddie's eyes. He moves in for a kiss. Eddie closes his eyes and seems to reluctantly cooperate. it's a gentle kiss lasting a couple of seconds. Buck rubs Eddies arm, lets it go and turns toward the table) BUCK: Let’s eat! (Cut to table, men sitting next to each other, eating and drinking coffee. Buck cheerful, Eddie a little dour) EDDIE: You got my soup. BUCK: Is it any good? Do you like it? EDDIE: Yeah, it's fine. Coffee just how I like it, too. BUCK: Excellent. I am trying here. EDDIE: I see. (The men eat for a few seconds. As Buck is picking up his coffee) BUCK: So, when do to have to pick up Christopher? EDDIE: Tasha said around five. BUCK: They're hitting the zoo today? EDDIE: Yeah. BUCK: Christopher always enjoys that. Wasn't it the water park yesterday? EDDIE: Uh-huh. BUCK: And the movies last night? Full weekend. EDDIE: Hmm. BUCK: We could take the kids to the beach next weekend, if you want me to go along. EDDIE: Okay. BUCK: Anything else you need to do today? EDDIE: No. (Buck turns to look at Eddie) BUCK: Man, once you get started you just don't shut up, do you. (Eddie smiles for the first time but keeps on eating. Buck turns back to his food. After a second) BUCK: (softer voice) Are we gonna talk? About last night? At all? EDDIE: We seem to be doing better when we're not talking. Last night, anyway. BUCK; Well, if we do have some of the day free, I'm all in for some more "not talking." EDDIE: I bet. BUCK: Come on, Eddie. Are you still half asleep or are you really in a mood? (Eddie holds his silverware to the side of his plate and turns to look at Buck) EDDIE: Alright, Buck, what do you want me to say? I'm still pissed at you for the risk you took on the job yesterday. You know how I feel about you and yet you continue to frighten me. I'm trying to deal with that. (Eddie starts eating again) BUCK: (a little hurt) We need to trust each other more, trust the other one's instincts on the job. EDDIE: (shrugs as he picks up his coffee) It's that simple. BUCK: I didn't say it was simple. And we're still not talking about what went on upstairs last night. You're still pissed after that, it changed nothing for you? EDDIE: You know I don't think that. BUCK: Well, at least that's something. Cuz I thought it was great; I don't believe it wasn't good for you. EDDIE: It was great. For me, too. Don't doubt that. (Eddie picks up their plates and carries them to the sink as Buck fumes over his coffee. Eddie walks over to Buck and puts his hand on Buck's shoulder) EDDIE: Look, Tiger, you've got to give me time to learn to deal with this. It's taken Cap years to. I've always had a problem with how you don't look before you leap. It's just come closer to home now.  What you can trust is how I feel about you. After all the drama of yesterday and last night, looks like that's not gonna change. (Eddie runs his hand through Buck's hair.  Buck smiles as he puts an arm around Eddie's waist) BUCK: Okay . . . I guess.  So . . . Tiger . . . you said that last night. Is it gonna become a thing? EDDIE: (Grinning) Maybe. Probably. I mean you did kinda pounce, not that I'm complaining. Do you hate it? BUCK: Just the opposite. Something spontaneous from you, something wild for me, how could I not like it? EDDIE: it's still Buck at the station house. We really can't tell anyone, if we want to keep working together. BUCK: I know. Departmental policy. We won't be the first to hide it. Doesn't mean I have to like it. What about Christopher? Do we tell him? And when? And how? EDDIE: Well, obviously we're gonna have to tell him, probably sooner rather than later. Not sure, but I think he'll be glad. He really loves you. But we're not gonna decide when or how to tell him right now. BUCK: I love him, too. But WE will decide when WE tell him, right? It won't be only Dad's decision. EDDIE: Yes, WE will. You're practically a dad to him already. Listen, Tiger, we have to be cleaned up and out and about soon enough. I’m also in for some more "not talking", but we don't gotta lotta time to waste. (Buck stands up turns away from Eddie. Eddie's hand stays on Buck’s shoulder) BUCK: And after today? There's not much wasted time in your schedule, is there. How's it gonna work? EDDIE: We'll find the time. We'll make the time. Our schedules might help. We're off duty some days Christopher's in school and he sleeps like a rock most nights. And I want you to spend more time with him. (Eddie pulls Buck around to face him) I'm sorry, Buck, I'm just beginning to realize this isn't going to be easy for you. Between work and sneaking around and Christopher, you'll be seeing a lot of me and most of it won't be "us" time. BUCK: Seeing a lot of you isn't a horrible thought. More time with you and Christopher is something I want, too. We already spend a lot of time together, so it won't be that big of a change. And, hey, let's be clear; I don't need easy. I don't want easy. I want you, whatever it takes. EDDIE: You've got me, and I'll do whatever it takes. But our time is gonna be precious. We shouldn't waste it now. Come on, Tiger, let's go find that clock.

okay so this is just to keep my sanity!! but like I have an extremely small wishlist with moments I want to see in 3b/season 4 for buddie:
1. buck telling eddie he is enough
2. hugs. lots of hugs.
3. abby notcing something but like, not making it too obvious? like I would literally take anything, for example *takes deep breath*; just like, moments before she leaves the show again and says goodbye to buck, buck runs to eddie or something along the lines of that, and she just has this fond look and we are left with so many questions but she just smiles and leaves and it’s soft
4. christopher & buck talking about the tsunami and the nightmares cause 3a dissapointed me in that regard
5. I am going for a LONG SHOT with this last one but just. hear me out okay. it’s the end of the season and either buck or eddie or both of them just get into some sort of dangerous situation (like they go into a burning building to rescue some people, idk, something dangerous that firefighters have to DEAL with) and than the other one of both of them are like “omg you idiot i thought i lost you” and they just have a deep af moment that’s gonna give us confirmation that something’s going to happen between them cause that’s all i want at this point
i get the fact that probably most of us want a kiss but i really feel like that’s setting the bar too high, even though 3a gave us a good structure and build-up for their relationship, and probably 3x11 will give us eddie moving on from shannon for good (or as good as he can anyway), and with abby returning, buck will also gain closure but... it still feels like too much to happen between them. i don’t know. there is a possibility but it feels too surreal at this point, even with all the kitchen flirting and deep eye contact and eye fucking they have, I don’t really see them getting their heads out of their asses long enough for a kiss to happen (i might be wrong but hey!!)
