sorry if this is a stupid question but what is gerrymander? I read the website but I'm not from the US so I just got more confused 😿

not a stupid question at ALL. the only thing that's stupid about gerrymandering is gerrymandering itself!

in the US, voting districts (areas that elect representatives) are redrawn every 10 years based on census data. the party in power (unsurprisingly this is the republican/conservative party in texas) gets to design these maps. so gerrymandering is when they draw them in like ridiculous unnatural shapes to basically shove opposition voters into fewer districts (so their votes are "wasted" in landslides) and also split them up across many districts so they virtually never have a chance to win anywhere

this is why, for many, many years, texas has remained a red state despite the fact that it is one of the biggest, most diverse, and fastest growing (especially latine/hispanic communities, who tend to vote democratic) states in the country. but republicans control the government, so they redraw maps to keep power despite shifting demographics. this is completely legal, by the way. when you hear about how some US presidents won the electoral vote but lost the popular vote, this is what we mean. the system has been rigged against the american voters for years.

what is happening NOW, and why i'm urging any texan democrat to contact their local representative and/or donate to the house democrats fund, is that texas republicans are currently trying to redraw district lines in the state that would eliminate five democratic house seats (out of 38 total), turning latine-majority districts into GOP-leaning ones, instead. they claim they're doing it to "fix unconstitutional maps," but they're clearly doing it to clinch control of congress, where they only have a small majority atm. this would guarantee ease of passing GOP laws and winning elections for the foreseeable future. my own representative is in danger of losing his seat if the vote happens and goes through. my vote already BARELY counts due to this practice. it'd count even less now.

since republicans dominate texas's government, democrats can't vote down the maps. so their only weapon is to break quorum—meaning they deny the legislature the minimum number of lawmakers needed to vote (think of it like a union strike, but for politicians)

so texas requires two-thirds of lawmakers present to pass bills. with 62 democrats in the house, if 51+ are absent, republicans can't vote. so a lot of our dem representatives have fled the state because, technically, they can still be forced to show up if they remain in texas. and considering our governor just signed warrants for their arrests, this was a good idea! because texas has no jurisdiction in other states, so, like. they can't really do anything until they're all back on texan soil.

bear in mind that they're being fined $500 every single day they don't show up to work. combine that with what are sure to be hefty legal fees, and they need all the help they can get right now. honestly, breaking quorum is mostly symbolic, because even though this specific session ends in two or so weeks, they'd have to keep this up until november to block it completely (bc our governor can just keep calling sessions again and again and again), which is probably undoable.

but it's an effective way to stir shit up. it's a way to get people to pay attention. the GOP is trying to get away with murder. they HAVE been getting away with murder here. and kidnapping. and bigotry and racism, etc etc. and if this gets passed, the second they get to redraw these lines and secure GOP control for years and years and YEARS to come, i am not sounding false alarms when i tell you that other red states will IMMEDIATELY follow.
