Once again, I’d shot myself in the foot. As always. At this point, it had become a bad habit I just couldn’t shake, so all I could do was accept it. What I needed to do now, however, was worry about the new recruit, since he was a hundred times more messed up in the head than me.
odasaku is such an unreliable narrator when it comes to himself.
he says he solved the azure messenger case via beginner's luck, and then describes innocuous things about the city that not everyone would notice. those are unappealing things and then he says he can't bring himself to hate this place. he calls himself messed up and yet, that's not it ?
i'm basically going 'i love odasaku so much' right now

Appreciation post for Akutagawa and Kenji's dynamic in Beast
Finally read the Beast LN and watched the live action. I see a lot of people losing their minds about skk and sskk in Beast, which fair, I too am absolutely feral for them. But why do I not see more people ranting about the wholesome, pure dynamic between Akutagawa and Kenji (platonic). It's one of my favourite parts, so endearing.
Akutagawa being exposed to Kenji's unwavering optimism, god knows he needs actual good people in his life. Kenji telling Akutagawa that nature works in halves, 'night will fall, and morning will break, Spring will come, then Autumn.' And Akutagawa recalling those words at the end of the LN.
Them working together to plant a bunch of rice crops, and Akutagawa respecting the hell out if it because he has a deep respect for food. Akutagawa continuing to work in fields with Kenji at the end of the LN, they are legit buddies by the end of it, actual friends.
Them talking about eating bugs to tell if the soil composition is good and Kunikida's surprise when he noticed they were getting along.
Now all I want is for main timeline Akutagawa and Kenji to interact, it's what Akutagawa deserves after only having terrible influences in his life before Atsushi.

Yeah having infinite alternative universes where the same two people love each other no matter the world no matter the time is nice but have you considered dedicating your entire existence to find the only universe where your loved one is happy, even if they're going to hate you in that universe, even if you yourself have to die in that universe, because their happiness always came before everything else? Because you never mattered as long as they were happy? Have you considered it??????

Oda and Dazai do not have a father/son relationship
After reading Dark Era and the other two light novels where their relationship is expanded upon, I took some time to think about why exactly Dazai valued his friendship with Oda so much.
I think that because Dazai has this extreme immunity to the human experience, his friendship to Oda was something extremely special to him. Not because he saw him as a father figure, not owing to the fact that he saw him as someone who was on his level of intellect, or because Oda knew and understood everything about him. He was his friend, simple as that.
Dazai is someone who can't be understood and in return he is someone who can't connect to the world around him. In my opinion, having this normalcy of just talking to someone and not even necessarily being 'best friends' or 'soul mates' was a blessing to Dazai. This is also why I firmly believe calling it a father/son relationship would be a mischaracterization.
In an Interview, Asagiri noted that he described Dazai as "an unworldly being with a mental age of 2000 years." to staff working on BSD. I think a bond, that can situationally be as shallow and, to Dazai, as meaningless and abstract as a familial bond is something that he can't experience in a way that others would.
Friendship, in that sense, is less defined and I think it better describes their relationship as a whole

“It’s okay, Kyouka.” Atsushi gently held her hand. “I’m not going to die. I’m here for you. I’ll never again leave you to drown in the dark alone.”
Kyouka’s pale, delicate fingers slightly tightened around Atsushi’s hand as if she were grasping on to her last lifeline amid an endless abyss.
“I’m not afraid of the dark…,” she began softly. “Not as long as I’m with you.”
Akutagawa squinted as he observed them. He was having a hard time against one of the Mafia’s skill users, but now it was two versus one, and to make matters worse, he was in their territory. Nevertheless, his voice showed no signs of dismay.
“Two bloodthirsty killers with hearts of gold, drawn to each other through a criminal organization,” scoffed Akutagawa with a subtle laugh. “How touching. However, I looked into you both on my way here. ‘Port Mafia’s White Reaper…’ ‘The Thirty-Five-Man Killer…’ Such detestable titles. No matter how long you hold the other’s bloodstained hand, you will never be able to share each other’s warmth.”
“You’re probably right,” replied Atsushi, his eyes never wavering. “But that means you and Gin will never be able to share each other’s warmth, either.”
atsushi and kyouka ! being even closer than in canon, because they truly have only each other ! atsushi and akutagawa ! going verbally for the throat as soon as they meet !! beast is so, so good.

I've seen a lot of people trying to get into the BSD light Novels and quite frankly you can read them in order but I do have a recommendation about the order I think makes more sense chronologically regarding the story.
So:
1. LN 3. The Untold Origins of the Armed Detective Agency.
2. LN 1. Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam.
These two take place prior to the beginning of the main timeline and are actually a great way of understanding Ranpo and the partnership between Dazai and Kunikida (also recommend LN 1 to anime only watchers because they mixed the first chapters of the manga with Dazai's entrance exam which takes place 2 years prior to the manga and they royally screwed up on Kunikida's characterisation by doing that)
3. LN 7. Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen
(the manga was good but I feel like you might understand Dazai and Chūya's dynamic and the difference of their relationship to both Mori and the Mafia once you read this)
4. LN 8. Stormbringer
(you might actually understand Chūya as a character after you read this one, dives a bit deeper into his relationship with Dazai, explains who Verlaine actually is and talks about stuff that's mentioned afterwards in the manga, like singularities)
5. LN 9. The Day I Picked up Dazai side A
(this happens at some point between LN 7 and LN 2, and helps you understand Dazai and Oda's relationship prior to reading LN 2, how Oda ended up in the Mafia and also a bit more dive into Dazai's character)
6. LN 2. Osamu Dazai and The Dark Era
(better than shown in the anime, allows you to see how Oda sees Dazai since it's written from his pov, a good dive into Dazai's character while in the mafia and why he actually left )
Once you finish The Guild arc
7. LN 4. 55 Minutes
8. LN 5. Dead Apple
(so, the first one is a bit crazy but actually dives a lot into Atsushi's character, explains weird phenomena in BSD regarding singularities and how Dazai isn't affected by certain abilities even without touch, how Yosano can actually use her ability on Dazai and I find it quite interesting, HG Wells is an interesting character as well)
(Dead Apple is entertaining and dives once again into characters and their abilities but also explains weird singularities again, also the bond between Dazai and Chūya, it also gets a bit weird towards the end in regards to things happening that might be hard to understand but the rest is easier to understand than in the movie adaptation)
9. LN 9. The Day I Picked up Dazai side B
(it's set in the alternate universe of LN 6. Beast and a great point to understand Dazai's actions and motivations in said light novel)
10. LN 6. Beast
(it should come with a warning that it's going to ruin your mental health for a while, an alternate universe of BSD, brings in the Book so you might one to read this during/after the cannibalism arc because it kind of explains a bit what the book does or how it kind of works, definitely needs a bit more explaining but it is good info before starting with the vampirism arc and all that stuff, the book is important and there's talk about singularities again. It's also cool to see how the same characters adapt to a different lifestyle, Akutagawa in the ADA, Atsushi in the PM, kyouka in the PM but with Atsushi, Dazai if he stayed in the PM, the ending will fully rip your heart out if the rest of the novel hasn't done it before that and I really recommend the manga adaptation of it because the art style is *chef's kiss* and heart wrenching)
Done with my rant now, you can still read them in their publishing order this is just my recommendation. Also, LN 9 is not out on paper yet and I think we only have fan translations online but it is definitely worth it, @popopretty has a really good translation of it.
And LN 7 is getting a manga adaptation which is also looking really good so you can check it out.
LN 5 has a manga adaptation as well as being a film and this one is not written by Asagiri but is still canon so you have that.

Do the Minizai's and Dazai's No Longer Human nullify each other?
Might be funny, Chuuya would make Dazai levitate when he's annoying him
I'm not arguing with the funny part (actually Chuuya might be able to pull something like that even with NLH there, depending on how Dazai's ability actually interacts with it), but if they nullified each other they would no longer be nullifying each other. We would have a paradox on our hands. That would mean a singularity... or maybe nothing happens.
Tumblr media
Singularities are rare. Most of the time, one ability will win over the other. Sometimes, nothing will happen. Hirotsu's Falling Camellia, to push back anything he touches, can beat Chuuya and Verlaine's abilities. It's not a singularity.
Not all singularities are earth-shattering. Oda and Gide's let them have an entire conversation in a fraction of a second. According to BEAST, Akutgawa and Atsushi's black claws combo is a singularity.
Dazai is living his life every day seemingly free of singularities, unafraid of contact with his own skin. Even if touching another nullifier would indeed create a paradox, my tinies are fantastical little creatures that are a sort of extension of the big ones, so my answer is a big "nothing different happens"
Now, on another note, to keep things fun we also have these:
Tumblr media
It's still very possible for Dazai's ability to create a singularity, like anyone else, provided it's put in the right context. With BEAST, it's that their world exists inside of an ability (paradox); in Dead Apple, the abilities were separated from their hosts, so the conditions were special.
For my part, unless I have a plot point centred around said potential singularity, I'm not gonna touch those. Everyone else, go wild. I'm not even sure I've ever read a fanfic that was playing with singularities, that's a still brand new sandbox to play in. And singularities have been a known thing since Dark Era!
Everyone go come up a singularity right now. We have time to make up for.
