Out this week: Luchaverse: Catalyst #2 (Massive, $5.99):
Marco Lopez, Ivan Plaza, Javier Caba, Bryan Magnaye and Alessandro Micelli return to Massive’s new Luchaverse with another look at real wrestlers turned into fictional supernatural heroes. This issue spotlights arguably AEW’s best tag team, the Lucha Bros. (who may not be in AEW for long, it seems?) as brothers Penta Zero M and Rey Fenix search for a mysterious power source that could change the course of human history. In a second, related story, luchas Solar and Super Astro are reimagined as cosmic beings who return to Earth to protect the planet from whatever the Lucha Bros. discover. I sense a tag-team match is coming …
See what other comics and graphic novels are arriving in stores this week.

This amazing piece was signed by some great people. Voices Erica Schroeder , Michael Haigney, and Eric Stuart. This will be in the Snapping Turtle Gallery forever. I want to say the artist Vhon Remot and Colorists Bryan Magnaye did amazing and because of that they have a great opportunity that came out from this “Happy Accident” one like this is now available as are the single character pieces that made this complete. I wish I could tag the two I was unable to find. (at SnappingTurtleGallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmGJTl1sUJz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Militia #2
Militia #2 Blackbox Comics 2019 Written by Chuck Dixon Illustrated by Jethro Morales Coloured by Bryan Arfel Magnaye Lettered by Taylor Esposito The mission continues! When 40 young girls become pawns in a bloody civil war, the stakes are high. A special-forces unit is sent to show the world how it’s done. Terror’s worst nightmare, a woman with a gun. I really am enjoying this despite a few things that make me raise an eyebrow. As May tries to have her voice heard the commanding officer is treating her more like an PR person or a tag-along and less like a soldier. Sure Specialist May has been wanting to be on the ground and it's not for a lack of trying but it feels more condescending as if she doesn't belong on the ground with them and he's letting her know that. A little sexist, possibly but I will give Chuck the benefit of the doubt on that one considering she is only a Specialist. Still the way this is set-up is extremely well done, the man certainly knows what he's doing. The structure for this story is great to see through the pacing that allows the story & plot development and the character development ample time and space for the reader to really get into the story. There is an aspect of this that makes me chuckle and that's this reliance on technology such as drones that means the squad is left motionless. This is silly to me, forces were on the ground long before drones were invented they should be able to move without having to rely on them. Regardless of how this is meant to come across it's a good point and it's one that takes the reader off page and engages the mind in some nice ways. I do like seeing the group going after the girls, again. These are locals who are ruthless and money hungry and all things considered more dangerous than most of us will ever truly know. Even the inclusion of young boys gives this group a more dreaded air to them and that's sensationally well done. The biggest issue I have is when Specialist May keeps taking parts of her armour uniform. Sure I get the reasoning behind the helmet but honestly I think too much went, I know a woman with in a tank top shooting a gun, but c'mon Chuck your too good a writer to be this cliché. Jethro and Bryan do some really nice work on the interiors here. I love how clean, crisp and strong the linework is and how through the varying weights Jethro is able to show some amazing attention to detail. That we see the jungle, that we see the buildings and the rooms throughout so that backgrounds are utilised to enhance the moments and bring a beautiful sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a really great eye for storytelling. The colour work here is just as strong. How we see light sources being utilised in the shading and shadows is extremely nice to see. I like the way the colour blocking is utilised in multiple tones instead of gradation and it works to Bryan's advantage and strengths. Whatever criticisms I might have Chuck is telling one hell of a good story here. We get a really good sense of who the characters are, what they are about and how far they are willing to go. Also seeing May coaching herself through this situation and constantly reminding her of all that training she did to do what she has to is kind of refreshing to see. That she isn't a hardened soldier right out the gate is a more realistic approach and one that works exceedingly well. This is a highly entertaining book and it's got some really nice strength in the writing and with some super interior artwork makes this a strong offering and darn reason why Blackbox should definitely be on your radar. This is an exciting new company with some stellar storytelling.

Militia #4
Militia #4 BlackBox Comic 2019 Written by Chuck Dixon Illustrated by Jethro Morales Coloured by Bryan Arfel Magnaye Lettered by Taylor Esposito The stakes are high as Militia and her crew navigate further into Afghanistan. I am continually impressed with each new issue that comes out. Militia and her team may not exactly be heralded by the brass who are stuck in their boys only club mindset but they are determined to prove that they too can get the job done. In this day and age I firmly believe that if you want to defend your country you should be allowed to serve, so long as you are capable of doing so. That however is neither here nor there what matters is what see here. The story & plot development that we are seeing here as the story unfolds and how we see the information released is among the many reasons I enjoy Chuck's work. The character development is sensational as we get to see the characters grow and evolve as the encounter new situations, their dialogue with one another not to mention how the act and react to these encounters. I like the fluidity that we see as it mimics what I see in the real world which I appreciate a whole heck of a lot. You can always tell when a story is naturally flowing instead of being forced to fit into something and Chuck really has found this interesting stride in this book. There are a few bits and pieces that we see along the way where we learn U.S. military slang and it's a great little extra that adds into the authenticity of the book. Granted the girls have Lee who used sit and work alongside Militia who is looking out for them and is probably breaking a few protocol rules by being as familiar as he is but then again I am okay with that considering the way their relationship was forged before her boots hitting the ground. There is a different kind of honesty that we get to see here. Women around the world do face a different set of circumstances and whether we agree with that or not isn't relevant because it is what it is and there's no getting around it. Seeing that happening here as the men and by extension the women of that village not talking to them and showing very little respect so to see them soldier on and to do what they are there to do is kind of inspiring. The interiors here are marvellous. I like seeing the way that the varying weights of the linework are utilised to bring out some attention to detail. Finally all the belts and pouches make sense for a change, kidding love him, and the overall look and feel of these folks in uniform is really perfectly done. I get that backgrounds in some locations are hard to do but I would really like to see them utilised more and to give us more of that vibe that they are on location instead of in front of a green screen if you will. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a nice eye for storytelling. The colour work here is really nice to see. That we see a base colour and then the hues and tones within to create shading and shadows is excellent work. I am really enjoying this book. There isn't any kind of preachy stuff going on, we see different sides to different folks all of whom may or may not have different points of view. There are a few layers within the story that keeps being nurtured and growing so that it keeps upping the interest and intrigue factors. This is a solid book told without bias one way or another and it's all about the characters some of whom have more to prove, if only to themselves, than others and it gets better and better with each new issue. This my friends is a book you want to read.
