Kickstarter Highlight: Fight of the Century
youtube
We recently had the opportunity to interview Troy-Jeffery Allen and Nick Allen, two of the creators of Fight Of the Century, an exciting new project which is currently featured on Kickstarter. You can view their trailer above and support the campaign HERE. Enjoy the interview.
________
Welcome to BlackComicsChat. Please introduce yourself and tell us where are you from?
Troy: We’re from the DC-Maryland-Virginia trifecta. I hesitate to say “DMV”, but that’s a thing. I’ll quickly represent DC despite no longer living there. Nick will always strongly rep Baltimore.
Nick: Always.
Tell us about your earliest memory of comic books, and the moment when you first decided that you wanted to be involved in the creation of comics.
Nick: It was a late uncle’s comic collection. Lots of old school Marvel.
Troy: Yeah, I definitely remember randomly finding that Spider-Man, Power Man, Storm anti-smoking issue. At that age, I don’t think it really connected to me that these were comic characters until later. It also failed at teaching me not to smoke.
Nick: I think we were both hard-headed children.
Troy: Oh, for sure.
Nick: The one I grabbed was X-Factor #4 with Frenzy on the cover.
Troy: Look at that. Both comics had black people on the cover. I just realized that. Nick: Right?
Troy: As far as deciding to create comics, that came in the late 2000s. Nick was in video game school and I was the questionable one still working at a comic book store letting my film schooling collect dust. I think we both realized that comics – this thing that seemed impossible to do before digital – might be attainable. That’s all it took: Ease of access and stupid assumptions.
Let’s discuss the comic that you are Kickstarting. What is your story about? A cyberpunk, underdog sports tale about Performance Enhancing Drugs in the future is a premise that I haven't seen before in comics. How did you come up with the concept, and what made you want to tell this particular story?
Troy: Well, it’s called FIGHT OF THE CENTURY. It takes place in Brazil in the not-so distant future where everyone is linked to a pharmaceutical company. Our focus is in the Mixed Martial Arts world, where everyone undergoes a Dr. Frankenstein-like experiment to compete. We’re talking full metamorphoses.
Our afro-Brazilian main character, Rex Punga, gets in the octagon while totally juiced up and he has a “hulk out” moment that causes an in-ring incident. The company behind the drugs BrawnPharm – buries him with a public smear campaign and ends his career. But this is a sports story. So, Rex has to make a comeback and he’s going to do it by going all-natural. It’s very David and Goliath that way.
Nick: I'm a huge sports fan, and a few years back I noticed how athletes were being busted for doping. However, I thought for every athlete that's being busted, there are probably ten that aren't. And what does it mean for sports in general when we pick and choose losers that way. So, I asked well what if I could tell a story about a society where athletes got to openly use these drugs. What would happen? I approached Troy, because he's a really good writer, and thought he would be great to work with. From there we started hammering out some plausibility details (who, what, where); and what social commentary could we add.
Troy: I was already doing a wrestling comic over in my corner somewhere. FIGHT OF THE CENTURY kind of seemed like the obvious thing to do. I agreed to it so quickly. We just found so many ideas based on that nugget of a concept.
Also, Nick hit me up about this right around the time that I’d watched Food, Inc.--that documentary about Monsanto. My mind was already in a place where I was thinking a lot about genetic modification and how a lot of what we consume is unnatural. That led to us talking about multinational corporations that essentially have no borders. That’s when we knew who the real bad guy of our story was. We started down this track of looking at a future where everyone is chained to a pharmaceutical company. Then we came back to the present and went, “Shit…this is happening now!”
Nick: Troy and I also have experience in combat sports (myself with martial arts and Troy with wrestling), so we thought MMA could be a great vehicle for telling this type of story. And life has imitated art as more and more MMA guys are being busted for P.E.D.s. Also, who doesn't love watching a good bloody fight?
Troy: That’s kind of the crazy thing. Life kept supplying material for us to riff off of. From Ray Lewis’ deer antler spray to students using Ritalin to pass – the story just kept writing itself.
Tell us about the creative team behind this project.
Troy: We wanted an international squad. Like, one of the biggest hooks for MMA are these cultural connections: Conor McGregor is proud to be an Irish fighter, the Gracies gave us the designation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instead of judo -- styles of fighting and fighters are very much tied to culture. We wanted that baked into the story.
Nick: Shawn Alleyne reps Barbados and he started the artwork by providing many of the original character designs. I don't think Shawn needs much introducing to your audience. I knew him from attending shows and seeing his artwork online. He's a phenomenal designer and brought a lot of the initial style ideas.
Troy: If I had to credit anyone with injecting cyberpunk into our initial concept it would be Shawn. I don’t think it was intentional, but his concepts just screamed “cyberpunk”. We just kept thinking of it in those terms from there on.
Artist Mervyn McKoy also added a lot of style and a pinch of dystopia to some of the early concepts. Especially to Karla Punga, Rex’s wife and manager. He’s been a frequent collaborator of Nick’s.
Nick: From there, we scoured the internet in order to find some amazing talent. Julius Abrera was the first guy we found thanks to Instagram. He lives in the Philippines, so we had to cold contact him, but, fortunately, he was an MMA fan and loved the idea. He was all on board.
Then, we wanted to add some homegrown talent from Brazil, so we looked for a Brazilian based inker and once again Instagram showed us Thiago De Costa. We thought they would make an amazing pairing for the line art team.
Troy: Thiago has been indispensable. He got Thiago Ribeiro on board and Netho Diaz. All from Brazil. He’s also been our Portuguese voice on Facebook.
Nick: Absolutely. Also, Bryan, our colorist, was a referral from Julius. So we got the Filipino connect too. And that only left lettering which I take responsibility for.
What was the creative process like on this book?
Nick: Amazing. Everyone adds something different and special to the book. We've been fortunate to work across 3 continents with ease -- that's to the internet. Dropbox and Facebook are our primary tools for collaboration.
We’ve also found a new graffiti artist that we hope to incorporate into the mix. Troy: And Dana Brand, who has become our story editor recently. Her passion for story is great motivation to work through the sometimes rough terrain of plot. She also loves baseball, so I think the PED angle made sense to her pretty quickly.
Nick: Yeah, the core team is always batting around ideas and helping each other when challenges arise.
What made you choose Kickstarter as a funding method?
Nick: Well, we've completed an entire issue and thought it would be worth pursuing to fund a graphic novel. Troy and I are fully committed to the book, but totally self-funding would be much slower. Also, Kickstarter is an amazing place to find like-minded individuals that might love a book like this.
Troy: I was all sorts of skeptical. I’ll admit that that’s why this project took a couple of years. Nick had been funding his book, C-LISTERS out of pocket and I’d been doing the same for my comic BAMN, but Nick had done some Kickstarter campaigning for Visionary Studios before. He saw the value in crowd-funding a lot quicker than I did.
What are some of the incentives that backers can receive when they support your campaign?
Nick: Well, we're offering digital and physical copies of the books; a special thank you page with your name and MMA handle; cameos; original artwork… Troy: We really wanted to give people incentives that enhanced the story instead of just loading them up with junk. That was important to us. That’s why we worked with Drive Radio to lace certain incentives with a soundtrack. We want you to feel the story at every possible level. We make sure to do our part in the action and drama department, but then you can be IN the story as well as hear how dangerous the future is.
What are your future plans for the series?
Nick: Well, it's a limited series, but I think it's an extremely fertile universe to tell other stories in. Maybe some one-shots with the characters would be fun. Or explore another sport in our cyberpunk paradise.
Troy: This really is the maiden launch of our imprint Rex Co., so we’re going to set up shop here and unleash a lot of other ideas. Nick is working on a YA title for Rex Co. that I’m actually really excited about. I’m still doing BamnComics.com, and the plan is to start printing that story through Rex Co. A nap would be nice too.
We’re looking forward to seeing the finished product. Anything else you’d like to share?
I will correct one mistake we made early on: We’ve been calling FIGHT OF THE CENTURY “cyberpunk”, but I discovered that there is a subgenre that fits more specifically for what we are doing. It’s called “biopunk”. There is cyberpunk in the story too, but the larger part of it is definitely biopunk.
Sorry, but nerds can be particular. That would have bugged me forever.
Where can people find you and your work on the internet?
Nick: Currently, the best place to shift blame is Facebook.com/FotcComic. We’ll be there throughout all this. And, of course, our Kickstarter Page.
Thanks for joining us. Everyone, be sure to check out this campaign!

“there is some speculation that Osment might be joining the X-Files cast as the younger version of Skinner himself. Especially considering what series’ creator Chris Carter had to say after The X-Files Season 11 trailer was released at New York Comic-Con on October 8.At the NYCC panel, Carter revealed the backstory episode will feature Skinner as a young man, and now TVLine ventures a guess the role could go to Osment. At the same time, Empire Online has his character pegged as a possible relative of Skinner’s.” (X)
“I’m so excited because in previous episodes in the original run of the show, you had one episode where Mulder was trying to resign, you had Skinner talking about his experience with the paranormal in Vietnam," Pileggi explained. "They go there. So it’s really cool. I’m very excited about it, I just read the script and it’s really cool.” (X)
“We learn more about Skinner and more about his connections to Mulder and Scully and how he’s been a loyal advocate of theirs at his own expense.” (X)

Promos: FOX - Promo #2 - Hungarian - Russian Promo pictures: XFiles news - SpoilerTV Sneak Peeks: #1 - #2 Additional info about this episode:
Episode 7 sounds like a winner, and we mean “sounds” figuratively because it seems like there won’t be much sound to hear in it at all.“It probably has 15, 20 lines of dialogue in the whole episode,” Duchovny said. “It was really a ballsy move on everybody’s part. I think putting up an hour of television on a network that has maybe 20 lines in it and still be riveting, I’m sure not all of us believed it. It’s one of our more special episodes that we’ve done in a long time.”Anderson said [...] “It’s really interesting as an actor to work on something that has no dialogue, because you don’t want to end up miming what you would say were you to have dialogue,” (X)
Episode 11x08 Title: Familiar (X) Airdate: March 7, 2018 Written by: Benjamin Van Allen Directed by: Holly Dale (X) Synopsys: Mulder and Scully investigate the brutal animal attack of a little boy in Connecticut while suspecting darker forces are at play. The episode will most probably end on a cliffhanger (X)
The episode ends on a cliffhanger. [...] expect deaths.Emphasis on plural. (X)
He also reveals that the final minutes of the episode will leave viewers stunned, teasing, “I'm calling this one of the biggest cliffhangers we've ever had.” (X)
A Family Affair…Also in the episode, David Duchovny’s daughter West makes her acting debut. Carter says, “It was the first time I ever worked with her because it was the first time she'd ever worked; this was her screen debut. She came in, she was poised, she was prepared. She also made it her own; she came in with, you know, some attitude and that attitude was also a part of the character. She had worked on it hard.” Keep your eyes peeled for the young actress as "Maddy." (X)
That’s all I guess. If you find that something is missing, please PM me. Thank you!

Rodgers active for Green Bay's clash with Vikings

Rodgers active for Green Bay's clash with Vikings
Aaron Rodgers is active for Green Bay’s game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
The Packers’ star was questionable coming in with a left knee injury.
Rodgers was held out from practice at midweek, but went through the team’s light practice on Saturday . Green Bay has two backup quarterbacks active too with DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle.
Receiver Davante Adams is active as well for the Packers after he was listed as questionable with a shoulder injury.
Ben Roethlisberger and his aching right elbow will give it a shot for Pittsburgh against the Kansas City Chiefs. Roethlisberger skipped two days of practice this week after having his throwing arm hit late in overtime of the Steelers’ season-opening tie with Cleveland.
Roethlisberger will make his 202nd appearance for the Steelers, second most in franchise history. He needs 76 yards passing to move past Hall of Famer John Elway and into seventh place on the NFL’s career list.
The Steelers will be without All-Pro guard David DeCastro (fractured right hand) and cornerback Joe Haden (hamstring).
Kansas City safety Eric Berry will sit out once again while nursing a sore heel.
The Cleveland Browns listed receiver Josh Gordon as inactive for their game against the New Orleans Saints. That decision signals that the Browns may be waiting to see if there are any trade opportunities for Gordon before following through on an initial announcement Saturday evening that they intended to release him.
Cameron Meredith is inactive for the Saints, who continue to be patient with the receiver who is widely viewed as one of the top additions to the offense in free agency. He is trying to come back from torn knee ligaments that wiped out his entire 2017 season.
The Tennessee Titans are without their top three tackles against J.J. Watt and the Houston Texas. The Titans already knew left tackle Taylor Lewan would be out because of a concussion, and right tackle Jack Conklin is out as he works his way back from a torn left ACL.
But Tennessee also declared tackle Dennis Kelly out with a virus.
Kelly has been filling in for Conklin.
Los Angeles Chargers receiver Travis Benjamin will not play against the Buffalo Bills because of a foot injury. Defensive end Joey Bosa was also listed as inactive and will miss his second game with a foot injury. Benjamin had one catch for 1 yard in the Chargers’ season-opening loss to Kansas City last weekend.

Only in Philadelphia would a brilliant, come-from-behind, playoff-clinching win be met with utter despondency and despair.
Alas, here we are, with Nick Foles leading the Eagles into the playoffs as NFC East champions, because the superstar starting quarterback (reportedly) tore his ACL on the same drive in which he also set the franchise record for most passing touchdowns in a single season.
I regret using the term “Pyrrhic” in my Week 1 story and should have saved it for this game instead, because the term really can’t be defined any better. The cost of the win makes it feel like a wash. It seems pointless to talk about nine other takeaways when Carson Wentz suffers a serious injury, but we’re just gonna have to suck it up and move on with our lives.
So where’s your head this morning? Are you a believer? Can a backup quarterback take this team to the Super Bowl?
Or is the season lost? Do the Birds fold and flame out down the stretch? Do you become a grumpy loser who can’t be arsed to change your underwear or take a shower?
Listen, this team can take care of these other NFC donkeys at home in January. Nobody should be scared about hosting the Saints, Vikings, or Rams in Philly. Tom Brady in the Super Bowl is another story, but stranger things have happened. If Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer can lift the Lombardi Trophy, then anybody can. It’s time to roll out of bed and seize the day. Carpe Diem.
1) The injury
It happened on a scramble at the tail-end of a 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.
Wentz was running to his right when he dove for the end zone:
#Eagles QB Carson Wentz suffers a brutal knee injury against the #Rams. Sources say he could be done for the year. http://pic.twitter.com/yeAz5fbQms
— NYSportsCast (@NYSportCast) December 11, 2017
The play was negated because of a holding call on Lane Johnson. Wentz, showing discomfort, stayed in the game and handed the ball off twice before throwing incomplete to Alshon Jeffery. On a 4th and goal, he remained on the field and Doug Pederson decided to go for it:
.@cj_wentz with his 33rd TD pass of the season, a new #Eagles single-season record.#FlyEaglesFly http://pic.twitter.com/ExSIZ1giWe
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) December 10, 2017
And that was his last action, throwing a touchdown pass on one leg while remaining stationary in the pocket.
Some people blamed Pederson for the injury, saying that the Eagles should have run the ball at the goal line. I get that, and I don’t disagree with the idea for strategical purposes. They should have run the ball more overall, not just in the red zone. They didn’t show enough offensive balance in general.
But I’m always wary of trying to pin everything on someone specific. Injuries can happen anywhere, anytime. The kicker got concussed trying to make a tackle a few weeks back, remember that? Here, your franchise quarterback is just trying to make a play in an important game. He also has to try to protect himself as well. It’s a two-way street. This game was as big as they get and Wentz was trying to put the team on his back.
2) Receiver by committee
Consoling Carson in the tunnel was Zach Ertz, inactive for the game after failing to recover from a concussion suffered last Sunday.
Brent Celek and Trey Burton had big games in his absence, scoring three of the Eagles’ four offensive touchdowns.
Burton was particularly solid, catching five balls for 71 yards and 2 scores. He only had 15 catches coming into this game and hadn’t gone above 60 yards receiving more than once in his entire career. He’s a free agent at the season’s end and will want to put this on his resume:
Celek caught the opening touchdown and garnered a key pass interference call in the red zone that kept the Birds’ first scoring drive alive.
And I’d be remiss if I failed to mention Torrey Smith, who had his first 100-yard game in more than two years. He caught a season-high six passes yesterday.
3) Left guard rotation, but not by choice
One of the more important parts of the game that fell by the wayside was the departure of left guard Stefen Wisniewski, who left in the second quarter with an ankle injury.
That put Chance Warmack on the line alongside fellow backup Halipoulivaati Vaitai. Warmack was later pulled for Isaac Seumalo.
Warmack is a backup for a reason, yeah? He’s had some moments this season, but it was obvious that Wisniewski was the better player when the Eagles finally gave up on the LG rotation a while back.
On a play like this, I think Wisniewski does a better job:
It’s a delayed handoff where Lane Johnson doesn’t get a great chip on the end, but Warmack fails to move his guy at all and the play is blown up at the line. Corey Clement had a bit of room to run there after breaking the first tackle.
If Foles is gonna be the guy moving forward, hope that Wisniewski is healthy, because you don’t want your backup QB playing behind the backup LG and backup LT.
4) Whiffing
I wrote about the quality of the Eagles’ tackling two weeks ago and now I feel like an asshole, because they did a really poor job yesterday, especially the secondary.
It was 21-7 and the Eagles were cruising when Malcolm Jenkins and a few others whiffed on Cooper Kupp, allowing a huge gain up the sideline that eventually led to a touchdown:
Cooper Kupp is a pro bowler Cooper Kupp is a pro bowler Cooper Kupp is a pro bowler Cooper Kupp is a pro bowler #PHIvsLA http://pic.twitter.com/MX3E5zj6zS
— 6'7-Eleven Inches (@LeBandz_James) December 10, 2017
It seemed like the defense was out of sorts all day long, and I swear Jalen Mills didn’t want any part of this play:
Eagles have had no answer for Todd Gurley, 100 yards and 2 TDs on 11 carries. Rams go ahead 35-31 http://pic.twitter.com/MoGuYVFfdh
— The Bitter Birds (@AdrianFedkiw) December 11, 2017
Unwilling to tackle?
I can think of one guy who might be able to help in this department:
Eagles need me on Defense to bring that gangsta shit back
— Asante Samuel (@pick_six22) December 10, 2017
In all seriousness, the defense really came around in the fourth quarter, forcing a fumble and then holding on after the Eagles retook the lead. When it seemed like the Rams had adjusted and figured it out in the second half, Jim Schwartz’s unit stepped up the energy and intensity and made some key plays down the stretch to help a banged up offense get the job done.
5) Don’t roll that Blount
I have nothing against LeGarrette Blount. He’s been solid when called upon this year.
That said, Jay Ajayi had the hot hand and should have had more carries in the first three quarters yesterday.
He finished with 15 rushes for 78 yards while Blount had 7 for 12, but five of Ajayi’s runs took place on the final clock-killing drive of the game. He didn’t have enough looks in the second and third quarter after opening with runs of 7, 9, and 19 on the Birds’ first three touchdown drives.
I don’t know how much is on Pederson and how much is on Duce Staley, who controls the running back rotation, but you gotta feed the beast when he’s hungry. If you see glimpses in the ground game, build on that, lighten the load for Carson Wentz, and chew up the clock while keeping your defense off the field. Seems simple enough.
6) Hey ref, you’re blowing the game
The Eagles benefited twice last night from brutal calls against the Rams.
The first was unsportsmanlike conduct on Trumaine Johnson for mouthing off to Alshon Jeffery after breaking up a 3rd and 9 pass attempt. That was on the third quarter drive where the Eagles ultimately scored to retake the lead.
Later, the Rams were called for “leverage” on a Jake Elliott field goal attempt, a call that had everybody on the broadcast utterly confused. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman thought the refs had identified the wrong player. Mike Pereira or whoever they asked in New York City also had no clue what the call was about.
The Eagles ended up blowing their fresh set of downs and had to kick the field goal again (the first was good), so, luckily for the Rams, that bogus call ended up being a non-factor.
But just write this down and save it somewhere if anyone ever tells you that the refs are in the tank for the other team, because they definitely weren’t in this game. Eagles fans would be flipping shit if both of those calls went against their squad.
7) A big blocker
Just a wrinkle here, something we’ve haven’t seen before, which is Isaac Seumalo playing as a fullback.
They lined him up in an offset I-formation and ran play-action on this one:
Kind of a busted play from the beginning because Brent Celek flinches and tips off the defense. Wentz makes a great play with his feet to convert the 3rd and 1.
The Eagles don’t carry a fullback on the roster, so a lineman will be in there on rare occasions when decide to use one. Beau Allen has played the role in the past.
8) Doug’s worst call?
<deep breath>
Let’s start with the gadget screen on the first play of the game. It was way too slow to develop, but then Doug got the Rams with a similar play on the next drive, which tells me he saw something on tape about throwing that delayed screen and using Los Angeles’ aggression against them.
Doug’s biggest issue was obviously not giving Ajayi enough snaps when it mattered last night. He was gashing LA early and looked up for it, so you stick with him. Instead, we got another 60/40 split that was skewed by the final series.
I also disagreed with the decision to go for it on 4th and goal at the end of the third quarter, even with a presumably healthy Wentz on the field (I had no clue how badly he was injured at the time.) If Jeffery drops that ball, it’s a crushing loss of momentum and you’re down by four points instead of one. It was incredibly risky, and while it worked, a failure there might have cooked the Birds for good.
9) Doug’s best call?
Of course it was the decision to go on 4th and 1 during the third drive.
Also, it was clear as day that he should challenge right before halftime on this horrendous spot:
You sure he got that first down? http://pic.twitter.com/rJ7IatpTcx
— Sporting News (@sportingnews) December 10, 2017
10) Los Angeles
Can we talk about how Los Angeles is a soulless, plastic town?
Yeah, it’s always 83 degrees and sunny and Malibu probably has a slight edge on Wildwood, but I’ve been out there four times and something just feels “off” about LA. The people are generally cool and relaxed and not as high strung and frazzled as East Coast types, but maybe it’s the lack of character? Philly has history and meaning and things you can walk to and from, while Los Angeles is just a sprawling metropolis of highways and Starbucks and wannabe actors. For the second time this year, there were more Eagle fans in an LA stadium than home fans. I also need somebody to explain the obsession with In N’ Out Burger.
Finally, shout out to Jeffrey Lurie for having Bradley Cooper in his suite. Would you rather be in a box with Cooper or Chris Christie?

Every year, the South Alabama Jaguars are both great and terrible
The Jaguars are capable of absolutely anything, which they prove annually.
In 2013, South Alabama beat .500-plus teams Western Kentucky, ULM, and UL-Lafayette by a combined 51 points and lost to sub-.500 Troy, FIU, North Texas, and Hawaii by a combined 55.
In 2014, the Jaguars crushed 7-5 Appalachian State, got crushed by 3-9 Texas State, and lost to FCS Southern Utah.
In 2016, USA beat 11-win San Diego State (by 18!) and Mississippi State and fell by a combined 22 to 5-7 Georgia Southern and 4-8 ULM.
Joey Jones' startup in Mobile has been nothing if not entertaining. Against mostly non-DI teams, the Jags' existence began with 19 consecutive wins from 2009-11, then a stretch of 21 losses in 30 games. Now they've settled into a frustrating identity: a team that can win or lose any game on the schedule — and basically does both in equal portions.
Despite some impressive wins, USA has gone 6-6, 6-7, 5-7, and 6-7. The Jaguars are competitive, dangerous, and inconsistent. And that makes them hard to preview.
Or easy, I guess. I may have just told you everything you need to know. A deeper dive might not be necessary.
(But we’re going to take the dive anyway. It’s what we do.)
2016 in review
2016 USA statistical profile.
2016 was Jones' strangest season yet. South Alabama showed maybe its highest ceiling but couldn't show it for more than one game -- or in some cases, one quarter -- at a time.
In the season opener against Mississippi State, the Jags trailed 17-0 at halftime and 20-7 after three quarters, then scored on a 99-yard drive and stole a 21-20 win with a four-yard touchdown pass from Dallas Davis to Gerald Everett with 57 seconds left.
They then lost to Georgia Southern at home and to Louisiana-Lafayette when the Cajuns were maybe in their worst form all year.
They went up 14-0 on FCS Nicholls State, then gave up a 23-0 run in the second quarter. They trailed by seven until scoring with 16 seconds left in regulation, then stuffed a two-point conversion to win, 41-40, in overtime.
They then outscored an awesome San Diego State, 28-8, in the second half to hand the Aztecs a 42-24 loss, one of only three Ls they would take all year.
After competitive losses to Arkansas State (17-7) and Troy (28-21), they eked out a 13-10 win over a bad Georgia State for homecoming, then lost in overtime at ULM. They then barely lost to a peaking Idaho, then barely beat a bad New Mexico State.
In the Arizona Bowl against Air Force, they bolted to a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter. They then got outscored, 42-0.
How can a team play this consistently inconsistent?
A reliance on big pass plays.
USA passers averaged 13.6 yards per completion, but with only a 56 percent completion rate. Team passer rating from the first eight games: 160.4, 98.7, 171.6, 89.3, 210.6, 97.4, 153.4, 86.7. The level of competition didn't really seem to matter -- either the passing game was clicking or it wasn't.
Things leveled out a bit (USA’s passer rating was between 122 and 135 in four of the final five games), but the passing game had a lot of hits and a lot of misses.
Decent Plan A, no Plan B.
USA’s offense was two different offenses. On standard downs, the Jaguars ran 64 percent of the time, 40th in FBS; on passing downs, they threw it 82 percent of the time, most in FBS. On running downs, they were Ohio State. On passing downs, they were Washington State.
This handcuffs your personnel. Sophomore quarterback Davis was asked to throw a lot of passes when opponents knew he was going to throw the ball, and sophomores are inconsistent enough as is.
Sometimes this worked, and all was well. But predictability made USA even more reliant on big plays, since opponents were able to figure out tendencies.
A one-dimensional ... defense.
Opponents ran 69 percent of the time on standard downs (10th in FBS) and 45 percent of the time on passing downs (fourth). Part of this came with the terrain of playing run-heavy teams like Georgia Southern, San Diego State, and Air Force. But that's REALLY run-heavy, and USA did also play pass-happy teams like Georgia State and Idaho.
That means opponents were all seeing the same thing on film: an aggressive secondary, a decent pass rush, and a sieve of a run defense. The Jags ranked 119th in Rushing S&P+ and 113th in Adj. Line Yards. If you could run, South Alabama was in trouble.
If you couldn't, USA's aggressive defense was going to take some shots at forcing big plays.
The defense could stabilize a bit. USA welcomes back five of last year's top six linemen, two of three linebackers, and four of six defensive backs. Plus, they could welcome quite a few transfers and three-star freshmen.
The offense, however, is a question mark. Transfers could bolster the line, but the receiving corps has to be rebuilt, and, well, predictability is not an asset.
Offense
Full advanced stats glossary.
The USA offense has improved marginally under third-year coordinator Bryant Vincent. The Jaguars' adjusted scoring average (per Off. S&P+) was 22.9 points per game in 2014, when they reached their first bowl game. It was 24.3 in 2015 and 25.0 in 2016, and considering the youth at quarterback, that's not nothing.
Still, their Off. S&P+ ranking has only improved from 103rd in 2014 to 95th in 2016. The man who helped breathe life into UAB in 2014 hasn't been able to pull off quite the same turnaround in Mobile.
Continuity at QB will help. Davis won the starting job and looked great against Mississippi State and UL-Lafayette, but he missed two games and threw at least two picks in three starts: the tighter-than-expected wins over Nicholls and NMSU and the loss to Idaho.
If Davis is able to develop as a second-year starter and stay on the field, that could make the offense more stable. But he has to hold off fellow junior Cole Garvin, who looked mostly good in limited action; he went 31-for-49 for 409 yards against SDSU and Presbyterian but also went just 3-for-12 against Arkansas State. Garvin was a well-regarded recruit and still has time to win the job. But whoever is behind center will be more experienced. That's something.
Now he just needs guys to throw to. Last year's top four targets are gone; they accounted for 156 catches, 2,404 yards, and 11 touchdowns. Tight end Maaseiah Francis (261 yards, 10.9 per target) returns, but the leading returning wideout, sophomore Jordan McCray, has seven career catches.
Continuity in the receiving corps is especially important, and USA has little. If Davis/Garvin establish a strong rapport with Francis, McCray, the running backs, and perhaps 6'3 JUCO transfer Malik Stanley, maybe the Jags can get by.
Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports
Xavier Johnson
Or maybe they can just lean on the run. Senior Xavier Johnson returns after rushing for 831 yards (5.5 per carry) and 10 scores, and both Davis and Garvin were effective pieces when requested; they combined to average six non-sack carries per game but averaged 6.4 yards per carry.
Johnson, the QBs, and a couple of exciting newcomers (mid-three-star redshirt freshman Jalin Buie and JUCO transfer Tywun Walters) will run behind a line that sort of got a head start on 2017 last year. Starters Steven Foster (right guard) and Curtis Williams (left tackle) are gone, but only started 17 of 26 games last year, and five players return with at least two career starts. Toss in Miami transfer Tyler Grimsley and Mississippi State transfer Sean Barrette, and you might find a solid five-man unit right there.
A less predictable, more ground-based offense could do some damage. But iffiness in the receiving corps could ground an already inconsistent attack.
Defense
Kane Wommack took over as USA coordinator in 2016, and — you couldn't really tell. That was a good thing. South Alabama's defense has been solid since the Jags joined FBS; despite the occasional glitch, they ranked 72nd in Def. S&P+ in 2013 and 70th in 2014, and after falling back to 107th in 2015, they rose back to 71st with Wommack.
And that was with a dreadful run defense. After getting lit up early, the Jaguars allowed just a 117.8 passer rating over the final nine games of the regular season.
Wommack was certainly aggressive. Even with a dreadful overall ground defense, USA still ranked 12th in power success rate and 56th in stuff rate. Combined with a No. 40 ranking in Adj. Sack Rate, that paints a picture of an active front. End Randy Allen and linebackers Darrell Songy and Roman Buchanan combined for a monstrous 38 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks (12.5 of which came from Allen). Defensive backs Jeremy Reaves and Devon Earl, meanwhile, combined for 13 TFLs and 14 passes defensed.
Songy and Reaves are back, but those other three graduated, as did safety Kalen Jackson and corner Quinton Dent. That opens the door for some turnover, but there's quite a bit of returning talent to like.
Matt Bush-USA TODAY Sports
Tyree Turner
Sophomore tackle Tyree Turner recorded 6.5 tackles for loss in his debut season.
Bandit end Finesse Middleton had 8.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks backing up Allen.
Corner Jalen Thompson tied Reaves for the team lead with 10 passes defensed.
Newcomers could make a quick difference, too. Missouri transfer Rocel McWilliams and JUCO tackles Jeffery Whatley and Roy Albritton could join the rotation up front, as could quite a few interesting freshmen. Linebacker Kendric Haynes was a high-three-star recruit per the 247Sports Composite, and safety Al DeShazor, corner Devin Rockette, and tackle Jalon Sheffield pulled three-star ratings as well.
There appears to be both depth and athleticism. USA has established a ceiling around 70th in Def. S&P+, but it wouldn't be a shock to see the Jags exceed that this year. That will depend on increased competence in the mundane. Being able to attack the line of scrimmage only matters so much when you’re getting gashed.
Special Teams
USA did one thing well in special teams: punt. Brandon McKee was astounding, averaging both length (44.4-yard average) and height (18 fair catches in 43 punts, plus 20 kicks downed inside the 20). USA ranked 15th in punt efficiency.
That was it, though. The Jags were 106th or worse in every other special teams category and ranked just 105th in Special Teams S&P+.
McKee's gone, but most other key players return. That's the opposite of what you might prefer.

Now comes the fool's errand. It's a safe bet that South Alabama is going to win close to six games. The Jaguars are probably going to rank around 100th in S&P+, too. The S&P+ projections are a little on the lower side (108th, 5.3 wins), but not that much lower.
But the path to sixish wins is never quite what you think with this team. And one could see how things could get strange again. They have a less than 25 percent chance of winning in only two games and are only over 65 percent once. About seven games are relative tossups, and one could see some sort of "win at Louisiana Tech, then lose at home to ULM" turn.
South Alabama is at once one of the most and least stable programs in the Sun Belt. That Jones has pulled this off is a remarkable feat, considering how young the program is. It played its first game in 2009, and Jones is the only coach the Jags have ever had.
Still, at some point you want more, right? South Alabama has proven capable of taking down impressive teams, but the Jags still go win-lose-win-lose-win all year. At some point, those consternating losses have to stop, right?
Even if there is a brighter future, that probably isn't going to take shape in 2017. The Jags are too green in the receiving corps, and the run defense still has a lot to prove, even if the pass defense is awesome.
But hey, if you’re going to be mediocre, you’d rather be mediocre in this way, right? More ups and more downs is way more entertaining. For outsiders, at least.
