It’s only now that i’m well into my Merrick reread that I realized that there’s a book character that almost made it into the Interview With The Vampire show, even appeared in the script, but it was ultimately cut out; that would be Oncle Vervain.
Tumblr media
The script describes him as a young Voodo Priest, and it’s not far from he is in the books. This is how Merrick first describes him:
Tumblr media
In the books, Oncle Vervain is a member of the Mayfair family. He is Irene Flaurent Mayfair‘s brother; Irene Mayfair is better known by the name of Great Nananne. She was Merrick Mayfair’s godmother and also her great-great-grandmother.

By Elisabeth Egan May 18, 2024
“You’d be shocked by how many books have women chained in basements,” Reese Witherspoon said. “I know it happens in the world. I don’t want to read a book about it.”
Nor does she want to read an academic treatise, or a 700-page novel about a tree.
Sitting in her office in Nashville, occasionally dipping into a box of takeout nachos, Witherspoon talked about what she does like to read — and what she looks for in a selection for Reese’s Book Club, which she referred to in a crisp third person.
“It needs to be optimistic,” Witherspoon said. “It needs to be shareable. Do you close this book and say, ‘I know exactly who I want to give it to?’”
But, first and foremost, she wants books by women, with women at the center of the action who save themselves. “Because that’s what women do,” she said. “No one’s coming to save us.”
Witherspoon, 48, has now been a presence in the book world for a decade. Her productions of novels like “Big Little Lies,” “Little Fires Everywhere” and “The Last Thing He Told Me” are foundations of the binge-watching canon. Her book club picks reliably land on the best-seller list for weeks, months or, in the case of “Where the Crawdads Sing,” years. In 2023, print sales for the club’s selections outpaced those of Oprah’s Book Club and Read With Jenna, according to Circana Bookscan, adding up to 2.3 million copies sold.
So how did an actor who dropped out of college (fine, Stanford) become one of the most influential people in an industry known for being intractable and slightly tweedy?
It started with Witherspoon’s frustration over the film industry’s skimpy representation of women onscreen — especially seasoned, strong, smart, brave, mysterious, complicated and, yes, dangerous women.
“When I was about 34, I stopped reading interesting scripts,” she said.
Witherspoon had already made a name for herself with “Election,” “Legally Blonde” and “Walk the Line.” But, by 2010, Hollywood was in flux: Streaming services were gaining traction. DVDs were following VHS tapes to the land of forgotten technology.
“When there’s a big economic shift in the media business, it’s not the superhero movies or independent films we lose out on,” Witherspoon said. “It’s the middle, which is usually where women live. The family drama. The romantic comedy. So I decided to fund a company to make those kinds of movies.”
In 2012, she started the production company Pacific Standard with Bruna Papandrea. Its first projects were film adaptations of books: “Gone Girl” and “Wild,” which both opened in theaters in 2014.
Growing up in Nashville, Witherspoon knew the value of a library card. She caught the bug early, she said, from her grandmother, Dorothea Draper Witherspoon, who taught first grade and devoured Danielle Steel novels in a “big cozy lounger” while sipping iced tea from a glass “with a little paper towel wrapped around it.”
This attention to detail is a smoke signal of sorts: Witherspoon is a person of words.
When she was in high school, Witherspoon stayed after class to badger her English teacher — Margaret Renkl, now a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times — about books that weren’t part of the curriculum. When Witherspoon first moved to Los Angeles, books helped prepare her for the “chaos” of filmmaking; “The Making of the African Queen” by Katharine Hepburn was a particular favorite.
So it made sense that, as soon as Witherspoon joined Instagram, she started sharing book recommendations. Authors were tickled and readers shopped accordingly. In 2017, Witherspoon made it official: Reese’s Book Club became a part of her new company, Hello Sunshine.
The timing was fortuitous, according to Pamela Dorman, senior vice president and publisher of Pamela Dorman Books/Viking, who edited the club’s inaugural pick, “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.” “The book world needed something to help boost sales in a new way,” she said.
Reese’s Book Club was that something: “Eleanor Oliphant” spent 85 weeks on the paperback best-seller list. The club’s second pick, “The Alice Network,” spent nearly four months on the weekly best-seller lists and two months on the audio list. Its third, “The Lying Game,” spent 18 weeks on the weekly lists.
“There’s nothing better than getting that phone call,” added Dorman, who has now edited two more Reese’s Book Club selections.
Kiley Reid’s debut novel, “Such a Fun Age,” got the nod in January 2020. She said, “When I was on book tour, a lot of women would tell me, ‘I haven’t read a book in four years, but I trust Reese.’” Four years later, on tour for her second novel, “Come and Get It,” Reid met women who were reading 100 books a year.
Witherspoon tapped into a sweet spot between literary and commercial fiction, with a few essay collections and memoirs sprinkled in. She turned out to be the literary equivalent of a fit model — a reliable bellwether for readers in search of intelligent, discussion-worthy fare, hold the Proust. She wanted to help narrow down the choices for busy readers, she said, “to bring the book club out of your grandma’s living room and online.”
She added: “The unexpected piece of it all was the economic impact on these authors’ lives.”
One writer became the first person in her family to own a home. “She texted me a picture of the key,” Witherspoon said. “I burst into tears.”
Witherspoon considers a handful of books each month. Submissions from publishers are culled by a small group that includes Sarah Harden, chief executive of Hello Sunshine; Gretchen Schreiber, manager of books (her original title was “bookworm”); and Jon Baker, whose team at Baker Literary Scouting scours the market for promising manuscripts.
Not only is Witherspoon focused on stories by women — “the Bechdel test writ large,” Baker said — but also, “Nothing makes her happier than getting something out in the world that you might not see otherwise.”
When transgender rights were in the headlines in 2018, the club chose “This Is How It Always Is,” Laurie Frankel’s novel about a family grappling with related issues in the petri dish of their own home. “We track the long tail of our book club picks and this one, without fail, continues to sell,” Baker said.
Witherspoon’s early readers look for a balance of voices, backgrounds and experiences. They also pay attention to the calendar. “Everyone knows December and May are the busiest months for women,” Harden said, referring to the mad rush of the holidays and the end of the school year. “You don’t want to read a literary doorstop then. What do you want to read on summer break? What do you want to read in January?”
Occasionally the group chooses a book that isn’t brand-new, as with the club’s April pick, “The Most Fun We Ever Had,” from 2019. When Claire Lombardo learned that her almost-five-year-old novel had been anointed, she thought there had been a mistake; after all, her new book, “Same As it Ever Was,” is coming out next month. “It’s wild,” Lombardo said. “It’s not something that I was expecting.”
Sales of “The Most Fun We Ever Had” increased by 10,000 percent after the announcement, according to Doubleday. Within the first two weeks, 27,000 copies were sold. The book has been optioned by Hello Sunshine.
Witherspoon preferred not to elaborate on a few subjects: competition with other top-shelf book clubs (“We try not to pick the same books”); the lone author who declined to be part of hers (“I have a lot of respect for her clarity”); and the 2025 book she’s already called dibs on (“You can’t imagine that Edith Wharton or Graham Greene didn’t write it”).
But she was eager to set the record straight on two fronts. Her team doesn’t get the rights to every book — “It’s just how the cookie crumbles,” she said — and, Reese’s Book Club doesn’t make money off sales of its picks. Earnings come from brand collaborations and affiliate revenue.
This is true of all celebrity book clubs. An endorsement from one of them is a free shot of publicity, but one might argue that Reese’s Book Club does a bit more for its books and authors than most. Not only does it promote each book from hardcover to paperback, it supports authors in subsequent phases of their careers.
Take Reid, for instance. More than three years after Reese’s Book Club picked her first novel, it hosted a cover reveal for “Come and Get It,” which came out in January. This isn’t the same as a yellow seal on the cover, but it’s still a spotlight with the potential to be seen by the club’s 2.9 million Instagram followers.
“I definitely felt like I was joining a very large community,” Reid said.
“Alum” writers tend to stay connected with one another via social media, swapping woot woots and advice. They’re also invited to participate in Hello Sunshine events and Lit Up, a mentorship program for underrepresented writers. Participants get editing and coaching from Reese’s Book Club authors, plus a marketing commitment from the club when their manuscripts are submitted to agents and editors.
“I describe publishing and where we sit in terms of being on a river,” Schreiber said. “We’re downstream; we’re looking at what they’re picking. Lit Up gave us the ability to look upstream and say, ‘We’d like to make a change here.’”
The first Lit Up-incubated novel, “Time and Time Again” by Chatham Greenfield, is coming out from Bloomsbury YA in July. Five more fellows have announced the sales of their books.
As Reese’s Book Club approaches a milestone — the 100th pick, to be announced in September — it continues to adapt to changes in the market. Print sales for club selections peaked at five million in 2020, and they’ve softened since then, according to Circana Bookscan. In 2021, Candle Media, a Blackstone-backed media company, bought Hello Sunshine for $900 million. Witherspoon is a member of Candle Media’s board. She is currently co-producing a “Legally Blonde” prequel series for Amazon Prime Video.
This month, Reese’s Book Club will unveil an exclusive audio partnership with Apple, allowing readers to find all the picks in one place on the Apple Books app. “I want people to stop saying, ‘I didn’t really read it, I just listened,’” Witherspoon said. “Stop that. If you listened, you read it. There’s no right way to absorb a book.”
She feels that Hollywood has changed over the years: “Consumers are more discerning about wanting to hear stories that are generated by a woman.”
Even as she’s looking forward, Witherspoon remembers her grandmother, the one who set her on this path.
“Somebody came up to me at the gym the other day and he said” — here she put on a gentle Southern drawl — “‘I’m going to tell you something I bet you didn’t hear today.’ And he goes, ‘Your grandma taught me how to read.’”
Another smoke signal, and a reminder of what lives on.

Fashion History Books on Internet Archive
Tumblr media
Illustration in La Mode by Paul Gavarni, c. 1835 (Rijksmuseum)
A selection of some of my favourites, free to read and check out once you create a (free) account!
Handbook of English Costume in the 19th Century, by C. Willett Cunnington and Phillis Cunnington. I can vouch for this as one of the greatest books in my collection, extensive menswear information. By the same authors: English costume in the Eighteenth, Seventeenth, and Sixteenth centuries.
A History of Men’s Fashion, by Farid Chenoune. A masterwork, absolute must-read primer on men’s fashion from the late 18th century to the late 20th century.
The Encyclopedia of World Costume by Doreen Yarwood. Covers many different cultures over a huge span of time so most topics are not treated in-depth, but still a great reference.
The History of Underclothes, by C. Willett Cunnington and Phillis Cunnington. Also covers men’s shirts in Western dress history, as these were considered undergarments.
Fashioning the Body: An Intimate History of the Silhouette, edited by Denis Bruna. A collection of essays on changing dress silhouettes in Western fashion over time, some of them very insightful.
The Dictionary of Fashion History, by Valerie Cumming. This is the first edition and I have the second, but my top fashion history dictionary and go-to for textiles and items of dress!

Favorite book you've read recently?
I've been reading a lot of art books, aka books with plenty of pictures, I'd say:
TATTOO. 1730s-1970s. Henk Schiffmacher’s Private Collection. (40th Ed.)
The illustrators: Dick Bruna
The tattoo one is (the book sized version of) a collection of images by Dutch tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher who traveled all over the world to collect knowledge and history. I've been going trough it super slowely bc every anecdote in this book has potential to lead you trough a rabbit hole of self-reserch, it's an infodump in bookform and I love it. And there's a lot of flash in there as well so it's great reference.
The other book is basically a biography of Dick Bruna, most known for Nijntje (miffy) with a focus on his entire illustration work, what inspired him, why he worked the way he did etc. (his simple eye catching style comes from working for his fathers publishing company where the novels had to catch the attention of passerbys in seconds bc they were sold in train stations where everyone is in a hurry)
(Hey both of these books are Dutch guys published in English)

I finished my Merrick re-read yesterday!
I started with the idea of reading again the crossover books now that I have finally read the Mayfair Witches whole saga, so this is my thoghts on revisiting this book:
- This book should not have been a Vampire Chronicles book. It should have been a Mayfair Witches book, about the black Mayfairs and the alternate branches of the Mayfair family. It would have been a much better book imo because there’s so much story not told there?
- Like I found quite amazing how many powerful witches in the same generations we have here. It’s not the norm with the main Mayfair family, but it seems to be here. Merrick is a remarkable powerful witch; her mother Sandra and her sister Honey seems to have been powerful witches as well. Great Nannane was feared because of her powerful she was, and Oncle Vervain as well.
- Oncle Vervain takes me to another point; this branch of the Mayfair family seems to have powerful male witches all around. In the main branch, the only notorious male witch is Julien Mayfair; but here, Oncle Vervain is presented as a real powerhouse. His father and grandfather appears to have been powerful witches as well, and I found this bit so interesting.
- Other interesting thing I wish we had learned more is the relationship between Merrick and her sister, Honey in the Sunshine. The Vampire Chronicles don’t have a lot of sibling relationships, especially between two sisters (with the exception of the Twins, i think), so this one caught my attention. Some mutual envy and antagonism, but a powerful connection as well. Honey always haunting Merrick, Merrick making the murderer of her sister and mother go mad and kill himself in revenge... her methods here actually reminded me a lot of when Lasher made Lionel kill himself for the murder of Stella.
- You know, I don’t hate David Talbot with the passion that most Vampire Chronicles fans do, but he is such a boring narrator, it drags the book down several times. It was worst in my first time reading, but even now I knew what to expect, it is still bad. I do think he cares deeply for both Louis and Merrick and his love is genuine, but he’s also kinda of the worst. He’s very condescending both to Merrick and Louis and he's so oblivious to so many things it becomes annoying. Tho it is fun to see Merrick getting the better of him again and again and again
- I love the Claudia bits in this book very very much, especially her diary. I do believe the spirit that appeared was Claudia; I think it was coherent to what we know of her. I love the bits in her diary where she talks about loving and hating both Louis and Lestat in equal measures, but wanting to drag them to the level of misery that is her constant company. And she knowing that she could not get Lestat to be conivent in a plan to murder Louis, but that Louis could be convinced, even if it would kill his soul even further... I bet it hurt Louis a lot to read that.
- I’m sorry I can’t take the ~love story~ between Merrick and Louis seriously, spell or not spell. Even before the show, I guess it was always my headcanon that Louis is gay. That part where she says he has three big loves, one being Lestat, the other Claudia, and he blushes without saying the last one... lmao. Anyways in my head it is Armand.
- Love the part that Lestat comes back all Deus ex machina to save the day and Louis’ life. The book being narrated by David is a tragedy since we can’t hear Lestat and Louis’ thoughts, but Lestat love for Louis being so powerful to drag him back from his coma by shee force of will is a lot.
- I like Merrick Mayfair. A lot. I think she’s amazing. I hate the ending that Anne choose to her in Blackwood Farm so, so much. If the show includes her, I hope she’s given a different ending.
- I think it’s such a shame that the Talamasca x Vampire feud teased in the end of this book never came to anything. Come on it would have been such an interesting plot! (Or not since you know, Anne was known to drop storylines at a whim but. Still.)

Title: The Spanish Love Deception
Author: Elena Armas

Number of Pages: 504
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
First published: 2021
Read: 10 - 22 December 2023
Thoughts:
This book was clearly written by a romcoms fan. I can’t comment on the references and similarities to The Wedding Date (2005) because I haven’t seen that movie. That the author is a fan of Twilight is also apparent. Perhaps there were way too many allusions to it. The one that particularly always makes me roll my eyes is describing the male romantic interest as a “Greek god”.
I quite fancy Aaron Blackford, although is glaringly obvious he’s a fictional man and by no means he’s plausible as real man.
I love the fake-dating trope and these one was well executed.
I was pleasantly surprised by Catalina going with Aaron as his fake date first, before going to Spain and pretend to be a couple.
I also enjoyed the “misunderstanding” from the beginning of their acquaintance. It was very Pride and prejudice. I liked that instead of offending her for not being pretty enough, she took offense on being labeled not professional enough. It was a nice modern touch.
This reading is fast, funny, lighthearted, and entertaining.
The problems at the end were resolved exaggeratedly easy. That the injustices in the workplace can be fixed that readily is not believable at all, but for the purposes of the story it’s fine.
The only part that didn’t sit well with me was almost at the end when Catalina didn’t jump blindly into the relationship consequently “letting Aaron down”. I mean, realistically all Catalina’s worries and fears were fair and Aaron by no means had the same things to lose.
Anyway, I did have fun reading this romance novel.

CATCHING MY BREATH, STARING OUT AN OPEN WINDOW
Zelda Borne is based on Zeldaborn from The Nightmare Before Christmas. She is a 27 year old witch, hideaway hostels maid, and uses she/her pronouns. She has the power of divination, and mirror scrying. Zelda is portrayed by Bruna Marquezine and she is taken.
CATCHING MY DEATH, I COULDN’T BE SURE
Unlike her older sister Zelda had no problem fitting in. She discovered her talents rather early but her abilities were more socially acceptable than her sisters was. Most of the time people just requested tarot card readings from Zelda and didn’t expect much else even though her readings were always weirdly accurate. Zelda was proud of her and her older sisters talents even though she wasn’t sure where they stemmed from. She looked up to her sister an immense amount and was always in awe by her ability to save things from the edge of deaths grip. It was an amazing gift but after the accident back home Helena didn’t see it the same way anymore.
Zelda wasn’t happy about packing up everything they’ve ever known into two tiny suit cases and booking it to the next town. They had grown up there, all their friends and family were still there. Instead Helena insisted on their safety so they fled without another glance back. While they found a place to stay rather quickly Zelda was furious with her sister for a handful of years. She didn’t want to leave in the first place and now her sister refused to try her magic again or even speak about it. If all that wasn’t bad enough, they couldn’t leave Evermore! It caused a lot of friction between the two sisters that their relationship still hasn’t quite healed since then. Every now and then Zelda tries bringing up magic again to her sister, pushing her to use her gift once more. But it’s always to no avail. Helena was content on forgetting their old life. For now Zelda keeps busy with trying to strengthen her ability's in secrecy from her sister. Even scouting out for people in town who have similar talents. If she couldn’t figure out a way to escape Evermore she knew an army of witches would might know how.
I HAD A FEELING SO PECULIAR
❀ Shona Samhain: They met at the casino when Zelda was bored out of her mind, she was the first person she met in town that she was willing to get to know. Shona seemed super cool and there was something about her that was different...
❀ Judy Hopps: Something about Judy just rubs Zelda the wrong way. She isn’t sure if its the goody-two shoe attitude or that smug expression she wears around town. Either way, Zelda isn’t a fan.
❀ Mason Reed: Have they ever met officially? No. Would that even be a possibility since he was mayor? Zelda didn’t know, but all she did know was that he was some fine eye candy.
THAT THIS PAIN WOULD BE FOR EVERMORE

☼☾ ( Bruna Marquezine, twenty-four, she/her , cis female , bournon 10**half sibling ) - have you seen ANTOINETTE BOURBON?  we’ve heard through the grapevine that they’re ENDEARING but also HAVE STRONG EMOTIONS. when you think of them , you think of A DELICATE BREEZE DURING A LONG SUMMER AFTERNOON; A LAUGH IN THE SEA OF SADNESS; FLOWER BOTH FRAGILE AND RESILIENT — VULNERABLE AND STRONG.

⋅   Princess Antoinette was born during a calm, warm summer afternoon in 1783. Daughter of the then King, little Toinette was neither heiress nor spare. The princess wasn't even truly a princess. Bastard of the king, that she was. A perfect blend that would be her undoing ― too royal to be a common, too rabble to be a princess!                                               ⋅   The spitting image of her mother, the young woman carried her true origins in her face. So that she would never forget the sins of her parents and the shame of her birth. Raised in the palace, she soon learned what her place was and what to do and not to do to ensure her preservation.                                               ⋅   As a child, Toinette loved to read and was often caught staying up late to finish a book. The ones she treasured the most told stories about far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, and princes in disguise. Tales of the new world, its people, sights, sounds, colors and flavors warmed her heart on the long, cold winter nights when she missed her mother the most. At that time, Antoinette was never part of any crowd, because her head was up lost on some cloud. She also learned to like music and tried to become a passable fortepiano player.                                               ⋅   Unable to leave the royal palace, the Frenchwoman needed to find other ways to fulfill her dreams of visiting the lands beyond the sea. Antoinette ended up falling in love with painting and acquired the ability, with her heart, to read poems in the brushstrokes of the artists in the gallery.                                               ⋅   The years passed and from a shy and quiet child, Toinette became a graceful and charming young maiden. Given the conditions of her birth, she learned early on that she needed to distinguish herself from the bunch. And she was as dedicated to her German, Portuguese and Italian lessons as she was to transforming the best parts of her charm into precious jewels.                                               ⋅   The beginning of her 20s were spent pursuing her hobbies and securing a place in her father's heart. After all, Toinette was her daddy’s girl and stepmother’s fellow gossip, always enjoying a good long talk about the strange happenings in the palace.

With 7 children composed of sons that seems to be every mother's dream and darling daughters, the Bourbons, the French Royal Family, had a full house! Perhaps too full, thought Antoinette sometimes. With so many sibling,  the youngest among them was sure of two things: — that it was always only a matter of time before arguments broke out; and — that he needed to distinguish herself from the bunch.                                               With that, she discovered how very effective it was to make oneself likable. She follows the rules of etiquette when she must, though she also knows when to break them, the right moment to turn another’s expectations on their heads in order to draw forth a delighted laugh and smile.                                               Antoinette became daddy's little girl and her mother’s fellow gossip, she smiles and praise her siblings survive on the palace without being used as pawn in a power play. Well versed in the art of flattery, mixing the sincere with the calculated, she knows just the right buttons to push in order to preserve herself.                                              Yet, she still has a certain hopeful naivety to her. She looks upon the world with stars in her eyes, trusting everyone. Antoinette dreams of distant lands, horseback riding in measureless fields of daisies and a gentleman to be her prince charming.

ARC Review: Blue Light Hours by Bruna Dantas Lobato
Rating: 3.5 ★ of 5
Release date: October 15, 2024
Tumblr media
A subtle, wholesome read that packed a punch despite its length. The characters are simply called Mother and Daughter, and their tender relationship made me want to cry. I think many readers would find this relatable.
I enjoyed the prose and atmosphere of this book. I loved the way the author presented the character’s loneliness and yearning. Everything felt written with care, and based on what I’ve read about this author, this book may have been drawn largely from experience.
At the end of the novel, I still wished to know more about these characters; how they were like before Daughter moved to Vermont. Either way, this was an enjoyable read. I’d say I’ve barely touched the tip of the iceberg.
Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the arc!

Bookstore Bruna sells several books with anti-Semitic and extreme right-wing ideas, BNR reports based on its own research. The Dutch bookstore automatically took over these titles from foreign book suppliers. According to the National Coordinator for Combating Anti-Semitism (NCAB), Bruna must, by law, remove the anti-Semitic books from the market. Bruna takes over millions of mostly English-language books from foreign catalogs, such as from Libri and Ingram. But it seems incapable of screening these books’ content. For example, Bruna currently sells two parts of The Culture of Critique trilogy - books written by the American conspiracy theorist Kevin B. MacDonald, who believes in white supremacy. His books, written from a quasi-scientific perspective, describe how, according to him, Jews undermine the interests of white people. Bruna’s website also contains books with titles like On Jews and Their Lies, a reissue of an anti-Semitic pamphlet from the 16th century by the German theologian Martin Luther. The book was translated into English by a writer who published several books under the pseudonym Thomas Dalton, in which he trivializes the Holocaust and questions the death toll. The summary of Luther’s book on the Bruna site is full of anti-Semitism, describing European Jews as “arrogant, greedy, and stubborn.” The book calls for the destruction of synagogues and for putting Jewish people in forced labor or expelling them from Europe.
