Favorite book you've read recently?
I've been reading a lot of art books, aka books with plenty of pictures, I'd say:
TATTOO. 1730s-1970s. Henk Schiffmacher’s Private Collection. (40th Ed.)
The illustrators: Dick Bruna
The tattoo one is (the book sized version of) a collection of images by Dutch tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher who traveled all over the world to collect knowledge and history. I've been going trough it super slowely bc every anecdote in this book has potential to lead you trough a rabbit hole of self-reserch, it's an infodump in bookform and I love it. And there's a lot of flash in there as well so it's great reference.
The other book is basically a biography of Dick Bruna, most known for Nijntje (miffy) with a focus on his entire illustration work, what inspired him, why he worked the way he did etc. (his simple eye catching style comes from working for his fathers publishing company where the novels had to catch the attention of passerbys in seconds bc they were sold in train stations where everyone is in a hurry)
(Hey both of these books are Dutch guys published in English)

and when they tell you that BSSM is the best rhcp album, you NOD AND AGREE.
it's just so fucking exuberant and a staple album of the 90s alternative rock explosion.
It's tough to pick a favorite from that album but Sir psycho Sexy and The righteous and the Wicked are definitely up there though !!
And on that note we say thank you Mother Nature for John Frusciante (and Mike Watt).
"Funked-out and fucked up" (Devon Powers) : Blood sugar sex magik, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1991
Cover art by Gus Van Sant and Henky Penky (Henk Schiffmacher).

In the house in Amsterdam of the Dutch artist Rembrandt, it will be possible to get a tattoo based on a sketch of his works. Hank Schiffmacher's studio provides such an opportunity from June 19 to 25. "The Amsterdam tattoo has become a form of pilgrimage. At first, people from abroad wanted three crosses, and then gradually they started asking for a small Rembrandt or the Rembrandt house, one of the most famous houses in Amsterdam,” said tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher. In Rembrandt's technique, scratches can be traced with a dry sharp needle on copper. Human skin is suitable for tattoos with images that are created in a similar technique. Sketches for tattoos are inspired by engravings of Dutch masters of the 17th century. A tattoo will cost 100-250 euros.

Didn’t think I wouldn’t add the story did you? I liked this tidbit from Henk Schiffmacher’s tattoo book, a little subversion of societal/gender expectations. and when it comes to the designs itself I love the similarity between the birds feet and what I presume to be vegetation!
tells me to read all these tattoo books, then calls me a nerd when I'm infodumping about Nepalese tattoos on my instagram stories 😤

TATTOO: 1730s-1970s Henk Schiffmacher's Private Collection
One part history book, one part art book, and one part fascinating memoir, this book is an overview of more than two centuries of tattoo history intermixed with an intimate look at the lives of tattoo artists.
My body is a blank canvas, it is void of any ink except for pen ink that finds its way on my hands when I work. I have a deep fascination for tats. It is a life commitment when applying a certain tattoo to your body. From stigma to cool, tattoos have become a cool trend. It is more uncommon in certain cultures to have people without tattoos. Taschen collects some of Henk Schiffmacher’s assembly…

03-11-2017 Flodder (1986) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091060/
There isn’t a person in the Netherlands that is unfamiliar with the fictional Flodder family. They are kind of the Beverly Hillbillies of the Netherlands, going from rags-to-riches and showing us how fun it can be to be raunchy, dirty and slimy. This movie is the first of the franchise, followed by sequels in 1992 and 1995 and a television series that aired originally between 1993 and 1998.
Written and directed by Dick Maas (one of the most important filmmakers hailing from the Netherlands), does Flodder open with informing us via a civil servant consultation that the house the Flodders are currently living in is situated on a toxic waste dump. To compensate, the local government offers them to live in the upper-class neighbourhood of Zonnedael, where a vacant villa seems just to be able to fulfil their needs. A house of such proportions breathes upper-class in the Netherlands, whereas in the U.S. it could also be for the middle-class. That being said, the wild Flodders don’t fit in, and the film follows their haps and mishaps in the neighbourhood.
It’s fun to see the lifestyle of the Flodders juxtaposed with the lifestyle of the rich upper-class. The mix instantly creates humorous situations that not only are just funny, but also comment on the Dutch welfare state and political correctness. It even kind of echoes Pink Flamingos (1972), John Water’s hymn of all that is dirty and grotesque.
At no point however did I get the feeling I was watching something of a high quality, so many years after having first seen it as a child. Acting and narrative fall short, badly even at times, and it’s not surprising that Flodder never caught on outside of the Netherlands. Devoid of any kind of pretensions (the shortcoming of the majority of the movies coming from the Netherlands), it’s still fun and games however.
