               superstition  inclined  him  to  believe  it  was  brooks'  own  guilt  that  had  manifested  camille's  name  on  his  phone  screen.  the  longer  her  name  floated  on  his  screen,  still  half-tucked  into  his  pocket,  the  more  panicked  he  became.  muttering  a  flimsy  excuse  to  his  date,  he  took  wide  steps  toward  a  quiet  corner  and  answered.  the  sound  of  her  voice  alone  sinks  his  heart,  but  the  subtle  hint  of  desperation  tied  with  the  slur  of  drunkenness  has  him  agreeing  against  his  better  judgement.  before  brooks  knows  it,  he's  leaving  his  card  at  the  dinner  table  and  turning  the  key  in  his  ignition.  a  non-descript  hoodie  fished  from  the  back  of  his  car  paired  with  dark  raybans  and  his  face  felt  obscured  just  enough.  it  was  so  inconspicuous  that  he  neared  conspicuous,  a  few  inches  from  a  fake  mustache  territory.  it  wasn't  that  he  thought  he  was  so  recognizable,  but  this  was  still  risky.  if  even  one  single  person  recognized  him  or  his  micro-celebrity,  it  could  derail  everything.  both  of  their  lives.  brooks'  fingers  anxiously  tap  against  the  bottom  of  his  steering  wheel  when  he  finally  spots  her,  pulling  his  car  over  and  pressing  on  his  hazards.  “  i  need  you  to  get  in  the  car  ,  ”  he  fights  the  instinctive  urge  to  touch  her,  to  reach  out,  to  attempt  to  help.  he  never  had  the  right,  but  that  fact  felt  especially  highlighted  now.  “  i  turned  off  my  location  for  our  manager  and  jace  ,  in  case  you  forgot  .  i'm  sure  i  can  get  you  home  before  anyone  notices  .  ”  it's  a  comfort  to  only  himself,  forcing  brooks  to  realize  how  matter-of-fact  he's  been.  the  bluntness  is  a  guise  of  his  own  anxieties,  and  hardly  a  good  one.  if  camille  could  see  his  eyes,  they  would  only  show  his  concern.  “  fuck  ,  i'm  sorry  .  it  doesn't  matter  .  i'm  glad  you  called  me  .  are  you  okay  ?  "

this was nehir's first valentine's day spent with brooks, and it was already going as smoothly as it possibly could. of course, there was the fear that a familiar face would spot the two together while the two still weren't public yet, but she didn't want to think about that. all she wanted to do was spend time with the person who knew how to give her butterflies without even trying. lacing her roller skates up, sat at one of the benches within the rink, she had a nervous but excited smile on her face.
