So back in the lawless dark ages of 2021, my besty bo besty, @abeautifulblog, the Artist Currently Known as Gremble, reached out to me with the following pitch:

So I paged to the back of How To Win Friends and Influence People to find the section on befriending internet cryptids, and began a relentless campaign of harassment by commenting barely-related shitposts and jokes on her then-running Heartrender Husbands fic until she, badgered nearly to death, finally agreed to be my friend in what was a tragically quaint hope that it might get me to shut up for 30 seconds.

I'm her sketchy internet friend from now until doomsday. My friend, my inspiration, my sister from another mister, one of the people I most admire and respect in all the world, though that notably does not reduce the amount of time I spend razzing her, the one, the only, @qqueenofhades, whose talent, intellect, and wretched salty sass mouth has immeasurably enriched my life practically every goddamn day since I finally succeeded in harassing and inveighing her into being my friend.

any star wars au where not-fallen anakin meets han solo has the potential to be soo funny. anakin and han have each independently declared at some point that they are the best pilots in the galaxy and they gradually get more and more competitive. luke is all "guysssssss stop fighting 🥺 this isnt you 🥺...... you can both be the best pilots in the galaxy 😌" but the minute he leaves the room han is like "you, me, race, 0200 hours, east hangar" and anakin is like "youre going DOWN MOTHERFUCKER". this becomes a regular occurrence and their friends / the Jedi Order / the rebels develop a betting pool, because theyre actually pretty evenly matched so it's usually entertaining. leia always bets on anakin just to piss off han. obi wan claims to know nothing but has been looking more tired recently

┃➤ARC trooper Jesse and why he matters so much to me

Jesse is one of those characters we know so little about, that we can make up about them anything we want. Like with almost every clone.

Like many other clones in The Clone Wars, Jesse is seen only in a few battles and arcs, that tell us just what we need to know about him to feel bad when he inevitably dies, since clones are doomed in this franchise one way or another.

And what really treated us with a bunch of interesting characters and development arcs was, of course, the Umbara arc, where Jesse is one of the clones who rebels against Krell's unsuccessful strategies and his disregard of their lives, who gets almost executed by his own brothers because of it and survives to see Krell's death.

There are many little things that make us love him, first of all his acts of disobedience.

At first, as audience we can't really justify Krell's decisions with 'It's war, and sacrifices are to be made" like some of the characters who are soldiers do, so we can't help but wish that they would not follow his orders, and Jesse is one of the first ones to do so, with Fives and Hardcase- who we know for a fact Jesse has known for a long time, since Hardcase was there back when they met the clone deserter on Saleucami. Hardcase dies, but they respect his sacrifice.

The clones' loyalty is not to the Republic, or at least not as much as how they wrote it. They serve the Republic and they fight this war because without them the war would be lost, since they're the only thing fighting the Separatists. And, of course, because they were made to do so. They were created for this, and this is what they know. Their life is long enough that they will fight as long as the Republic (as the Sith) needs, and then they will die, maybe thirty-five years after their birth, and it will be like they never existed.

This was the plan behind their creation, and this happens in the Star Wars canon timeline.

What they know, other than war, are each other, and Hardcase's last words are "Live to fight another day". Funny that it isn't "Fight to live another day", but it's merely because they don't live, they fight. They weren't made to know anything other than fighting, not even living. They don't have to survive a battle so that they can live and be in peace, but because after one fight there's always another.

But by fighting they still survive, and they can save another clone.

With his sacrifice Hardcase saves his brothers, and even Jesse, and they "let him die" because they would do just the same.

"I'm only doing it because I don't like him", this is how Jesse tries to justify his insubordination. Humor is his way of deflecting and coping. Hardcase replies to this with "I'm only doing this for fun", which is just incompatible with what he does at the end and proves that the reason why he did it is was to save his brothers- just like Jesse, who cracked a joke like him but almost died all the same.

So he loves his brothers, and he wants to win the battles he fights, forced or not, and he has a sense of humor- which is great, since we all love some good humor.

He loses it, facing his brothers ready to execute him, but we know he has it, Fives said it.

He's loyal, just like Hardcase, just like every other clone. To whom?

The first answer could be the Republic.

Jesse has a Republic crest tattooed on his head, and also has it painted on his helmet, so of course he isn't neutral regarding the Republic.

But, and here I am with what could be called headcanons, but they're necessary because this show didn't care about clones as much as it should have (don't talk money, if you want to talk money a show about clones could make Star Wars great again).

Jesse is not loyal to the Republic.

What truly made me fall in love with him was the Siege of Mandalore, because we know that he's part of a group of soldiers way younger than him.

He is the personification of the "only one left" trope.

Because we know that, of the 501st clones we got to know and love, he, with Kix and Rex, is the only one left.

Fives, Hardcase, Tup, Dogma, they're all dead, and Echo is with the Bad Batch.

Jesse is a first generation. He's probably been around since Geonosis, as long as Rex, and by this point he still paints his helmet the same way.

How probable is it that, for all that time- and remember clones age twice as fast as humans, so three years are not only three years for him, he was loyal to the Republic, never changing his paint, always loyal, always dedicated?

The clones' loyalty is to their brothers.

Jesse may have been once loyal to the Republic, when he was forced into fighting a war after a life spent hearing that war was what he was made for, but after living out of Kamino for three years?

You know Plato's allegory of the Cave? This is the same.

If you want to believe that the clones were at any point loyal to the Republic, it's almost impossible for them to have still cared for it after having a chance to see, know and understand how the Republic doesn't deserve their loyalty. Not the Republic who bought them and thinks of them as non-sentients, and uses them to fight a senseless war.

To mark himself with the crest, forever, is to be loyal to the point of not only sacrificing himself, but sacrifice others, like what a good General like Krell was supposed to do, which Jesse does, but not of his own volition.

Now to his death.

Jesse dies, trying to kill Ahsoka. Obeying a order he couldn't disobey, controlled by a chip he didn't know the existence of, taking out with him so many of his brothers.

When he sacrifices himself to kill the enemy of the Republic, he does it because he's been forced to. He wouldn't have done it, without the chip.

Jesse is loyal to a fault.

We see it with Ahsoka, and with Anakin, and with Rex.

Do you really think that, had the order come without the chip influencing him, he would have tried to kill Ahsoka with Rex on the line? Rex, who he'd fought with for three years, who he protected so harshly with the Bad Batch, who's his brother?

He is loyal to a fault, just not to the Republic.

Maybe he got that tattoo and later realized how wrong he'd been to do it as he realizes that they're all glorified slaves, and as he goes on fighting for someone who owns him he paints his helmet always the same way almost as a joke, since we know he has humor. They own him, after all, so why not mark himself with their symbol forever? ┃

This is my WIP Riordanverse Polycule AU thing I came up with. It is currently 1 am and I am only posting because my friends are ignoring me tbh

IMPORTANT: This is a mix of ships that are in canon/I would want to be canon and ships that I can only see existing in fanfic. This entirely for fun and I wouldn't want a giant polycule like this in the canon of the Riordanverse. This also contains spoilers for Trials of Apollo onwards.

Notes:

- Nico's three (2½) years younger than Percy/Annabeth

- They're all 18-21 by the time it's fully active

- Octavian/Jason used to be a thing

- Annabeth knew she was bi before all of this idk

MAJOR CHANGES TO THE STORY !!!1!1!

- Jiper doesn't break up until after Burning Maze, but they're at the end of their relationship during it

- There isn't the prophecy saying Jason/Piper will die (it actually just says that they will be driven apart) so Jason survives!!! Barely, he almost dies, but some of Apollo's god power shit god powers, the experience still shocks him so vividly he character growths tho dwdw

- Caleo never happens romantically, their relationship is never romantic, they're just friends, there's not Calypso and Leo repair shop bs, but Leo still does rescue her and they do become best friends because they really understand each other (I like them as best friends tbh)

How the relationships happen

- Percabeth, Solangelo, and Shel/Piper (kinda on that last one) happen the same way they do in canon

- Jercy are grossly close as friends and unintentionally cross Annabeth's boundaries, Percabeth have a discussion about it, Percy realises he's bi, him and Annabeth decide to open up their relationship, Jercy get together

- Shel/Piper is open from the start, Shel has a couple other partners alr, they're where Percabeth gets the "idea" from ig, Annabeth is the one to confess

- The reason Jason didn't think his relationship with Percy (predating) was weird was bc he acts the exact same with his other best friend, Leo. When Jercy gets together, he realises this, Jason is the one to confess to Leo.

- Valsolangelo happens... at some point.

- Jasico happens after Valsolangelo, Jason is the one to confess.

Jesper cant remember if his mother eyes were warm, caramel brown, or a soft chocolate brown. He cant remember if her grip was firm yet gentle, or gentle yet firm. He cant remember, and he hates it. He hates it. He hates that hes here, in this shit hole of a city, while shes rotting underneath a cherry tree somewhere. He feels sick. He hates that shes dead. He hates that she died today, years ago. He hates that he cant tell anyone because the last thing he wants is pity. He hates that Kaz hasn't given him a job in a week, which means the only distraction he has today is gambling and drinking. And he hates doing that today. But it cant be helped. He cant think of her. Not today. “Gimme the dice.” he slurs to the dealer. The dealer raises an eyebrow, but he isn't one to deny business, even from one of his own, and hands over the dice. Before Jesper can throw them, a hand lands on his shoulder. He tries to shrug it off, return to his game, but the hand only tightens. “Let go.” he growls, whirling around ready to fight, when he comes face to face with Kaz fucking Brekker. Great. Just who he was trying to avoid. Almost as much as Inej. “lets go.” Kaz growls at him, not allowing him a chance to respond before hes dragging him away. Away from the tables, from the booze, away from all the noise and people, up and up and up the stairs until they arrive at Kaz’s office and he kicks the door open, dragging Jesper by one arm and dropping him on the couch. Theres an impatient tap to Kaz’s steps, but also something that feels frighteningly like concern in the way he looks at Jesper. “Fuck off.” Jesper rasps, trying to get that damned look off his face. “Fuck you.” Kaz responds without missing a beat, and shoves a glass of water in his hands, along with a plate of something Jesper can’t tell what it is. “Eat. Drink. Sober up.” Jesper drops the plate. The glass shatters on the floor a second later. Kaz stills. Looks at him. “Don't wanna.” Jesper murmurs, curling up on the couch, pulling his knees to his chest. He doesn't care that he just disobeyed a direct order from Kaz Brekker. Doesn't care that he ruined his floor. Doesn't care that Kaz has killed people for less. Doesn't care doesn't care doesn't care. Maybe death will be a mercy. Then he can see his Ma. Then she’ll finally tell him how disappointed she is in him. Jesper curls tighter. A shape moves in his periphery and suddenly Kaz is squatted next to him. “Jes.” The word is soft, gentle almost. “Jes.” “leave me alone.” Jesper chokes. Kaz sighs. “Sleep it off Jes. Just- sleep it off. Okay?” “Job. gotta- job tomorrow.” jesper slurs. Kaz sighs again. “Don't worry about that right now. Sleep okay?” “I- don't leave.” Jesper whimpers. He doesn't care that its Kaz. Doesn't care that he sounds pathetic. Doesn't care doesn't care doesn't care. But Kaz just nods. “Okay.” he voice is so soft. Jesper closes his eyes. “Okay Jes. Ill stay. Sleep. Ill be right here.” Jesper nods, cuddling deeper into the couch. His couch. Kaz’s couch. It smells faintly like him. His couch. Jesper feels a light touch, and a blanket is draped across him. “Sleep well Jesper.” Jesper smiles, reaching out blindly. His hand wraps around Kaz’s wrist. He can feel Kaz’s pulse. Feels it elevate. “Thanks Boss.” He slurs. Kaz’s wrist twists, and suddenly Jespers wrist is the one being held. Kaz’s voice is quiet. Soft in a way its never been. Jesper is so drunk. He knows he wont remember this in the morning. And maybe thats why Kaz says it. “Always Jes. Sleep. Ill be right here.” And Jesper doesn't care that he wont remember it in the morning. He sleeps. And feels safe.
