"Ralph Nader was at full cry, ringing his tocsin of automobile doom into the brains of the public, convincing them that the lump of chrome and iron in the driveway was as lethal as a dose of Strontium 90 or a blast from a Viet Cong AK-47." - Brock Yates And yet here we are and so many of those "doomsmobiles" remain with us.

Ferrari. (2023) Movie Review.
Two genuinely awful movies had UK releases on Boxing Day 2023 and were very late additions to this viewer’s worst-of-the-year list. Let’s quickly cover off the less obvious entry. Michael Mann effectively shows the audience what House of Gucci would look like if it was presented more “respectively” in his long-gestating but deathly dull snapshot Into the life of Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) in a…

Ferrari (15): Enzo Juggling with Debt and Frenetic Parallel Lives.
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "Ferrari". #FerrariMovie. A much better movie than other critics led me to believe. Enjoyed this. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Ferrari” (2023). This was my last cinema trip in 2023. Given the ‘ho-hum’ reviews about Uncle Michael’s new film*, I was in a bit of trepidation about going to see “Ferrari”. But I actually found it a really solid watch. It’s a bit like John Frankenheimer’s motor-racing epic “Grand Prix” from 1966…. a bit of action mixed with some heavy doses of melodrama. But…

Brock Yates (Ferrari.

Tiny Review: Ferrari 2023. All Adam Driver. No story.
Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz give great performances.
But there is a lack of story. Things that got set up, failed to pay off. Like real life, arcs go nowhere and problems don’t get resolved in 2 hours.

Based on the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine by motorsport journalist Brock Yates, the film stars Adam Driver, with Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O'Connell, and Patrick Dempsey.

Michael Mann’s Ferrari is an exhilarating and horrifically haunting ride that emphasizes death’s perpetual shadow in a similar vein to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. It’s fitting that the two released in the same year while simultaneously a travesty because ties don’t exist amongst award contenders. Still, at the end of the day, while it’s a film that could’ve benefited from a longer run time, Ferrari is another bold success from Mann, full of some of the year’s best performances.
In more ways than one, Adam Driver drives (pun very much intended) the film to its impending crash, taking it from an audacious character study at a pinnacle point in a man’s life to an explosive spectacle. As the screenplay from Troy Kennedy Martin adapts from Brock Yates’s 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine, the film takes us inside a complicated man’s convoluted mindset as he grapples with his desires to constantly win and the harrowing grief that follows him around after losing his firstborn. It’s hard not to compare pieces of the two films when they deal with matters that dive into a man’s psyche and how he wrestles with his own creations resulting in death.

"Ferrari" Movie Review
Michael Mann’s long-awaited Enzo Ferrari biopic has finally come to fruition, starring Adam Driver as the eponymous historical figure. Set in a short but chaotic time period during 1957, “Ferrari” covers upheaval and growth in the Italian sportscar impresario’s 60th summer.
It’s 10 years into the Ferrari company’s existence and the end seems near, due to looming bankruptcy and the tragic death of the race team’s best driver following an accident during a practice run. Enzo’s personal life is also one of strife: his petulant but grudgingly loyal wife, Laura (Penélope Cruz), is inconsolable after losing the couple’s only son due to a sudden illness. What Laura doesn’t know—but everyone else does—is that her husband fathered another boy who could become the family heir. The child is living with his mother, Lina (Shailene Woodley), in the same town, and the illicit pair are supported by the meager Ferrari income while the production of the race fleet takes up the rest. But far from giving up or bowing out, Enzo decides to take a gamble and risk it all. As we all know from seeing the Ferrari brand alive and well to this day, his gamble pays off—but success comes at an awful price.
If you know your history, it isn’t a spoiler to say that Team Ferrari killed in more ways than one in Italy’s longest and most dangerous race, Mille Miglia (which was eventually banned). The wreck scene looks as extreme and shocking as it must have been in real life—the gory aftermath comes off more like a horror movie than a drama biopic… but Michael Mann’s meticulous attention to detail makes him the lauded and legendary filmmaker he is. Had this scene been glossed over, the emotional impact of what follows would have been lessened.
While Enzo himself was a sphinxlike, inscrutable figure with approximately two facial expressions in his emotive arsenal, Driver plays him with as much panache as possible for such a stoic man. Cruz’s Laura is the standout, featuring a range of emotions and refreshing humor, while the costars all bring their own talents and range to round out the cast. Real-life car racing enthusiast Patrick Dempsey plays the legendarily silver-haired competitor, Piero Taruffi, bringing singular authenticity to his portrayal by doing all of his own driving. What’s more, the screenplay is based on Brock Yates’ 1991 book, Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine and the research shows.
“Ferrari” is dark, dour, and perhaps more depressing than one might hope but it’s an admirable deep-dive into a short but pivotal time in motor and race history. “Ferrari” is well worth seeing on the big screen when it’s released on Christmas Day.

Adam Driver jumps into Ferrari gear!
After stepping into the Sci-Fi world once more with the recent dino-themed release of 65, Adam Driver is now returning to the autobiographical route with the part of Enzo Ferrari! Adam is no stranger to this format, with real-life based films like House of Gucci & J. Edgar doing particularly well. Directing this story, which is about one of the biggest sports car drivers and designers in history is Michael Mann! Known for his work on Collateral, Ali, and Heat, Michael knows how to put together an incredible movie, especially if it is based on real-life elements. Although it's been a while since Michael last directed, we know that he has what it takes to put together something truly special. https://youtu.be/KZHxT2yb2cE?si=Dyeu558B0UktHkfI Based on a book by Brock Yates, entitled Enzo Ferrari — The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine, Ferrari is a special product for Mann. Mann has wanted to make this movie for an extremely long time, going as far back as when he was still a film student. Focusing on the Italian 1,000-mile race, Mille Miglia in 1957, Ferrari will capture the interesting character of entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari on the big screen. For those moviegoers wanting something as serious as Oppenheimer, then you might well be in the right place, as Ferrari is clearly packed with drama and heart-breaking true-to-life elements. Between family and business Ferrari's life was complicated and at times, highly stressful. Judging from the trailer, Mann has captured that essence. The cast surrounding Driver features Penélope Cruz as Ferrari's wife Laura Ferrari, Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, and Patrick Dempsey who plays the Italian race driver Piero Taruffi. The film has already premiered at Venice Film Festival, and currently has a critic rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes! Will the audience score be on the same level, or even, hopefully, higher? We'll just have to wait and see. As a fan of Adam Driver’s acting career, from Kylo Ren to Clyde Logan in Logan Lucky, I’m intrigued to see him take on such a famous real-life personality. I have no doubt that he will smash it, and potentially, his performance could be heading down the Oscar road. Looking at the trailer more closely, I’m noticing some brilliant cinematography. The pacing holds snapshots of Ferrari’s life, and it really does make you want to watch the full story. As it builds and gets more emotional, it’s clear that there’s a lot of pain behind Ferrari’s journey, and although only one line of dialogue is said in the trailer, that feeling really comes across. So make sure you’ve got your seatbelt on, as Ferrari is going to be a hell of a ride when it’s unleashed this November 30th! Read the full article
