"Ferrari" Movie Review
Michael Mann’s long-awaited Enzo Ferrari biopic has finally come to fruition, starring Adam Driver as the eponymous historical figure. Set in a short but chaotic time period during 1957, “Ferrari” covers upheaval and growth in the Italian sportscar impresario’s 60th summer.
It’s 10 years into the Ferrari company’s existence and the end seems near, due to looming bankruptcy and the tragic death of the race team’s best driver following an accident during a practice run. Enzo’s personal life is also one of strife: his petulant but grudgingly loyal wife, Laura (Penélope Cruz), is inconsolable after losing the couple’s only son due to a sudden illness. What Laura doesn’t know—but everyone else does—is that her husband fathered another boy who could become the family heir. The child is living with his mother, Lina (Shailene Woodley), in the same town, and the illicit pair are supported by the meager Ferrari income while the production of the race fleet takes up the rest. But far from giving up or bowing out, Enzo decides to take a gamble and risk it all. As we all know from seeing the Ferrari brand alive and well to this day, his gamble pays off—but success comes at an awful price.
If you know your history, it isn’t a spoiler to say that Team Ferrari killed in more ways than one in Italy’s longest and most dangerous race, Mille Miglia (which was eventually banned). The wreck scene looks as extreme and shocking as it must have been in real life—the gory aftermath comes off more like a horror movie than a drama biopic… but Michael Mann’s meticulous attention to detail makes him the lauded and legendary filmmaker he is. Had this scene been glossed over, the emotional impact of what follows would have been lessened.
While Enzo himself was a sphinxlike, inscrutable figure with approximately two facial expressions in his emotive arsenal, Driver plays him with as much panache as possible for such a stoic man. Cruz’s Laura is the standout, featuring a range of emotions and refreshing humor, while the costars all bring their own talents and range to round out the cast. Real-life car racing enthusiast Patrick Dempsey plays the legendarily silver-haired competitor, Piero Taruffi, bringing singular authenticity to his portrayal by doing all of his own driving. What’s more, the screenplay is based on Brock Yates’ 1991 book, Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine and the research shows.
“Ferrari” is dark, dour, and perhaps more depressing than one might hope but it’s an admirable deep-dive into a short but pivotal time in motor and race history. “Ferrari” is well worth seeing on the big screen when it’s released on Christmas Day.

Ferrari (dir. Michael Mann).
There are plenty of swerves and detours to Ferrari's spare Italian drama. Built like an eventual tragedy with an uplifting hopefulness to the real-life fate of its characters, Mann and [Adam] Driver rebuild another sprawling biopic that manages to focus on outracing its turbo-charged mid-century automobiles.

Tiny Review: Ferrari 2023. All Adam Driver. No story.
Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz give great performances.
But there is a lack of story. Things that got set up, failed to pay off. Like real life, arcs go nowhere and problems don’t get resolved in 2 hours.
Ferrari is a 2023 American biographical sports drama film directed by Michael Mann and written by Troy Kennedy Martin. Based on the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine by motorsport journalist Brock Yates, the film stars Adam Driver, with Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O'Connell, and Patrick Dempsey.

Ford v Ferrari: Great Entertainment
Director: James Mangold
Release Date: August 30, 2019
★★★★★
“Ford v Ferrari” is a sports car racing movie that depicts Ford's struggle to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. Le Mans is a famous annual endurance race held in France, testing the skills and endurance of the drivers and their vehicles. Although I am not a big fan of cars and racing, “Ford v Ferrari” is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The racing scenes are amazing, but what I want to praise most is the acting of Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
Carroll Shelby, played by Matt Damon, is the leader of this racing project at Ford. Despite the fact that the management offers him unreasonable demands, he persistently negotiates with them and also with other concerned parties like drivers, and tries to lead his team to victory. He is not a person who is directly involved in the race like mechanics and drivers, yet his persistence is without a doubt the key to the team’s success.
Meanwhile, Ken Miles, played by Christian Bale, is a driver who has to risk his life in the race. In fact, he is on fire during the test drive, but he looks fine and looks as if he had never suffered from the fire. All he cares about is pushing his car and himself to the limit, or to the point where everything fades and his machine becomes weightless. He seems like an eccentric person to me, but his dedication is also indispensable to the project.
You cannot help but be touched by those two characters’ passion for the race, which is what they have in common. I highly recommend the movie to you.

Ferrari (15): Enzo Juggling with Debt and Frenetic Parallel Lives.
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "Ferrari". #FerrariMovie. A much better movie than other critics led me to believe. Enjoyed this. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Ferrari” (2023). This was my last cinema trip in 2023. Given the ‘ho-hum’ reviews about Uncle Michael’s new film*, I was in a bit of trepidation about going to see “Ferrari”. But I actually found it a really solid watch. It’s a bit like John Frankenheimer’s motor-racing epic “Grand Prix” from 1966…. a bit of action mixed with some heavy doses of melodrama. But…

My Week(s) in Reviews: January 20, 2024
I got busy reading the brilliant, behemoth book that is Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove the past couple weeks, so I really haven't gotten many movies in. Anyway, these are the (new) ones I get see. Also, My Best of 2023 Lists are Finally Complete! I'll be posting the remaining ones throughout the next week, or so, starting with Cinematography on Monday!
Ferrari (Michael Mann, 2023)
Incredibly well made and acted, and the racing sequences (which are just way too few and far between) are magnificent. But the screenplay unfortunately doesn't give us enough truly interesting material to knock it up to the next level. - 7/10
The Exorcist: Believer (David Gordon Green, 2023)
Sloppy, boring, and worst of all, not even remotely scary. - 1/10
Self Reliance (Jake Johnson, 2024)
I had a lot of fun with this one. It's really funny and has a interestingly bonkers premise. Plus, the core message is delivered effectively. - 7.5/10
Retribution (Nimród Antal, 2023)
You know you've got a writing problem when the climactic twist is painfully obvious before the five minute mark. There's some decent tension milked out of the single location gimmick, and Neeson still works as the everyman stuck in the impossible situation, but this would've worked so much better without the lame twist and corny voice modulator. - 4/10
Enjoy!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.

Movie Review | Ferrari (Mann, 2023)
The way some people have been describing Adam Driver’s accent, I imagined something way worse, like him going “Mamma Mia!” after every plot point. Methinks thou dost protest too much. I wouldn’t say it’s good, and sounds like the stock movie Russian accent more than Italian, but I think his performance is good enough otherwise that it stops being distracting pretty quickly. That being said, the best accent here is by Penelope Cruz, who coincidentally gives the best performance in the movie.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen anything from Michael Mann’s digital era. (Or quite frankly, anything he’s been associated with other than the OG Miami Vice; did you guys know I’ve been watching that? Bet you didn’t, so let me remind you once again.) But this does seem to be more conventionally shot, although it’s far from uninteresting on a visual level. I liked how often during the races the roads and surroundings would blur into the abstract while the cars would stay in focus, which is likely true to the headspace of the characters. Apparently the crashes are based on newsreel footage, but some of the car flips here look like something out of Singham. Which I guess is probably intentional, as it gives you pretty severe whiplash when you see the horrific aftermath.
I will say that while my screening wasn’t too bad from a murkiness perspective as Mann bothers to light this properly, the projection at my local Cineplex seemed especially dim, even more so than usual. Thinking I should have caught this at the Lightbox instead.
