summary: your broadway debut is finally here after years of working toward it. however, an unwelcome face is quick to crash the party. word count: ~1.3k warnings: fem!reader a/n: please don't yell at me if any of the details about the rehearsal process or whatever are factually incorrect. idgaf!!! all love ofc. also, this fic will (obviously) draw on a lot of material from a chorus line, so i’d suggest familiarizing yourself with the show while reading if you’re not already! not essential tho lol song: i hope i get it - a chorus line ensemble

The first thing you noticed was how, no matter where you performed or for how long, you would never get used to the way the stage lights quite nearly blinded you.
Opening night of your leg of A Chorus Line opened in less than two weeks, and you couldn’t be more elated. For years, this had been your dream. To perform, to be onstage, to be on Broadway. And now here you were. The show was undergoing another revival, a more modern take on the iconic musical. The casting directors had issued an open call to all aspiring stars in New York City to scout some fresh talent. They’d mentioned something about wanting to find unknowns, some unrecognizable faces since you couldn’t keep casting the same people over and over. That would be overkill, they said. That was a no-go. Not here. Not in the big leagues or whatever.
Hell, you were lucky that you even made it past the initial round of callbacks. But if you had told the version of you almost a year ago that was stepping into those auditions for the first time that you were going to be chosen to play Cassie, one of the most prominent roles in the show, you probably wouldn’t have believed it. A whole dance number and song to yourself, plus the most dialogue out of the rest of the female characters? It was surreal.
And now, after months of rehearsals, the opening was just around the corner.
It was no secret that everyone involved was growing increasingly antsy the closer opening night drew. Your castmates were collectively full of a newfound energy you hadn’t witnessed from them yet. It didn’t help that today was the first day of full costumes, plus more light and music cueing. Somehow, the show coming together brought everyone’s moods up by a thousand.
These more upbeat vibes were made evident as the cast stood in the primary assigned formation, one next to the other all in a line close to the edge of the stage. You stood, unable to stop yourself from fidgeting with the scarlet tulle of your costume’s skirt while, out in the audience, the production team buzzed amongst each other with directives, ideas on what to cue next, and how. And those stage lights, those damn lights, bore down upon you. You had to tilt your head down to keep the rays from blaring directly into your eyes.
“Okay!” You were no sooner snapped out of your daze at the booming sound of your director Vanja’s voice from out in the audience. Vanja was a middle-aged woman who’d been raised to become a ballet prodigy. She was not only a seasoned dancer but a strict, dedicated spirit, which was only natural considering her upbringing. She was functioning as both director and choreographer, so she was undoubtedly the most strung-up out of anyone involved in the show, but for obviously different reasons. You squinted, trying to search for her limber figure out in the house, but your vision was obscured from your point on the stage. Her eastern European accent (from exactly where, you couldn't recall) oozed through her words like a thick molasses as she continued, “We will be running ‘At The Ballet’ next. Victoria! Step up, please.”
From your left, your castmate Victoria stepped forward. The tall blonde had been cast as Sheila, the character who sung the first section of the aforementioned song. Since the two of you were sandwiched directly beside each other in the line formation, you’d become quite close during the rehearsal process. “Yes?” Victoria answered coolly, not at all intimidated by Vanja’s demanding tone. You couldn’t help but envy her a little bit for that.
“We will start a couple of lines before the beginning of the song,” Vanja instructed. “Isaiah will prompt you.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Isaiah!” Isaiah was another member of the cast, having been assigned the role of Zach, or the director of the chorus line the show centered around. Zach was primarily unseen throughout the show save for a few particular scenes, so Isaiah, the lucky bastard, got to sit out in the house for most of the rehearsals. You couldn’t see where he was located either, but Vanja seemed to have spotted him, as you could hear her advise, “Start from, ah… start from, ‘Better, go on.’ Just after she’s taken her ponytail down, yes?”
You heard a deeper voice clearing their throat, indicating Isaiah was beginning to speak his assigned dialogue. “Better. Go on.” 
Victoria, meanwhile, squared her shoulders in an attempt to rapidly lock into character before reciting her own lines. “Oh, how she did it. Well, first, she took me to see all the ballets. And then, she gave me her old toe shoes, which I used to run down the sidewalk in. On my toes. At five. And then-”
Suddenly, the typically fluorescent stage lights dimmed to a faded mix of blue and purple. It would have been a very serene color combo had it not been for Vanja’s deafening voice cutting Victoria’s dialogue off. “Hold!” she yelled. “That light cue is too early! That is not supposed to happen until the music starts! Who did that? Tech! Who did that?”
As Vanja spat out her rampaging words, Victoria turned her head just slightly enough to make eye contact with you. She sent you a discreet side-eye as if to nonverbally say, ‘She’s crazy!’
At that moment, one of the members of the tech crew stuck his head out from the wings of the stage. You recognized his face considering you’d seen him around so often, but you never caught his name. “Sorry, ma’am!” he apologized with a rueful grin. “That was an accident. I’m trying to show the new guy the ropes.”
New guy?
Judging by the tone of Vanja’s voice instantly calming down, she seemed to grasp the situation. “Ah, the new techie boy?” she queried. “I haven’t gotten to see him yet.”
“Oh, he’s right here.”
Almost as if on cue, everyone in the cast’s head turned towards the wing, where a second head popped out from behind the curtain. Your eyes widened. No way.
The new guy in question donned a polite smile, his oak brown curls cascading down the sides of his face into mutton chops you recognized all too well. His golden-rimmed aviator glasses shielded his glinting eyes. “How’s it goin’?” he greeted sheepishly, and to your right, you heard your castmate Ari suck in a quiet gasp. Nobody ever spoke to Vanja so casually.
No way.
“Hello.” Surprisingly, Vanja didn’t seem to mind so much. Or maybe she was just giving him the pass since he was new. “What’s your name? I apologize, I never caught it.”
“Oh, uh, Jay. Lotsa people call me Schlatt, though.”
No. Way.
“Ah. Pleasure to meet you, Jay.” You could practically hear the smile in Vanja’s words. “Come see me when we take a break so I can properly speak to you.”
“Will do. Sorry ‘bout the lights. I’ll be more careful.” 
Your stomach churned. Why the hell was he here? Him, of all people? Victoria, sweet Victoria, somehow seemed to catch on to your less than enthused reaction. In your periphery, you could see her quirking up a brow inquisitively at your expression. You couldn’t even make eye contact with her. You were too busy staring at Schlatt, fighting to keep your jaw from dropping.
And of course the prick had to notice you.
It happened in a split second. As he retreated back behind the curtain, your gazes met. A stupid grin crept onto his face as he saw you, clearly dumbfounded by his very presence in the theatre. If you weren’t onstage right now in front of all these people, you would’ve lunged at him.
You heard Vanja’s voice once more as the lights returned to their normal cue, preparing to resume the scene, but it all might as well have been a distant echo. Somehow, someway, Schlatt had made his way back into your life after fighting for so long to keep him out of it.

She hated her. So she just tried to lay low and mind her own business, but when a new student arrive at their school, madness follows.
After a revenge plan, everything falling apart and just overall chaos, Y/N hooked up with none other than Kate Bishop. And it just kept happening. The two started hooking up wherever they had the chance and old feelings start to resurface. But would things work out or they would fall apart eventually?
[I got inspired after watching the new Mean Girls movie and after writing a too long oneshot about an original story with Kate, so I decided to create a book.]

Chapter 2
A week passed by and Y/N was still trying to wrap her head around what happened with Kate at the Spring Fling. The black haired girl sort of apologized, touched her purposefully, complimented her and danced, a few times provocatively, with her. She spent the first few days thinking she probably got so drunk she dreamed it all after passing out in the school’s gym, especially because her and Kate went back to not talking and ignoring each other in school. But when Bucky showed her the pictures he took of her sitting on Kate’s lap and asked what was all that about, she realized that it indeed happened and that she wasn’t enough drunk that night, because now all she could think about was how warm Kate was and how good it felt being in her arms again. "Earth to Y/N."
Y/N blinked a few times to focus her attention back on her friends, staring at her, sat at their table during lunch and blushed furiously when she caught herself being lost in her mind, thinking about Kate again, "hm?"
"Wanda is throwing a party tonight. And we are invited!" Bucky clapped his hands enthusiastically and bumped his shoulder with Wanda, who giggled happily at his enthusiasm, but Y/N just stared at them lost after stabbing some of her salad.
"What?"
"Wow, keep it in your pants Y/N/N. You’re showing too much enthusiasm." Bucky joked and threw a napkin at his best friend, making Y/N roll her eyes and flip him off.
"My parents are going out town and they surprisingly allowed me to throw a party. As long as my house doesn’t explode." Wanda explained further to Y/N and furrowed her eyebrows pensively at her last words, making Y/N and Bucky cackle at her words.
"Wow, that’s great!"
"I know! We are gonna get ready at Wanda’s house and then-." Y/N stopped listening to Bucky rambling about clothes as she always do and for a moment let her gaze linger on Kate talking to her friends at their table, but moved her eyes away quickly to not be caught staring and opted on letting her mind wander again, remembering the extremely good sensation of having Kate’s arms around her as she hugged her. Fuck Y/N, your thoughts are starting to become too gay, even for you. Y/N chuckled at her own brain calling her out and stabbed another forkful of salad, chewing on it happily and kept pretending she was still listening closely to Bucky, but this time she forced her mind to not think about Kate Bishop again.

"Holy shit, what are they doing here?" Bucky run up to Y/N so fast that he bumped hard into her shoulder, making her groan out in pain and almost spill her drink on herself.
"Watch where you’re going, you jerk." Bucky rolled his eyes as he watched Y/N smooth out her shirt before grabbing her chin to turn her head up and make her look at the plastics entering Wanda’s house. "Oh no, what are they doing here?"
Bucky rolled his eyes at Y/N as he moved his hand away from Y/N’s face and crossed his arms, "that’s what I said, bitch." The two best friends flipped each other off with fond, exasperated rolls of their eyes while Wanda stared in panic at the trio walking into her living room.
"What do I do? Should I say hi?" Wanda asked anxiously, not ready to face the plastics again, despite they all apologized and made up at the Spring Fling. Bucky made the decision for her by pushing her towards them and making her almost knock into Natasha as the three girls advanced towards them.
"You’re mean, you know that?" Y/N asked with a low chuckle to Bucky, who merely shrugged and walked away to mingle like nothing happened, making Y/N shook her head with a small smile and walk to the opposite side to grab another drink in Wanda’s kitchen.

"Hey Wan!" Y/N yelled over the loud music into Wanda’s ear to make her hear her.
"Y/N/N, what’s up?!" Y/N watched with a fond grin Wanda smile brightly at her and she knew she was slightly tipsy, but she let her be.
"Do you have somewhere I can go to- get away from this chaos for a bit?" Y/N asked shyly at the girl while wringing her hands softly, but the girl just kept smiling at her as she looked at her in understanding.
"Of course Y/N/N. Here, this is my room key. Second door on the right upstairs." Wanda offered the key to Y/N and Y/N hugged her friend briefly.
"Thank you Wan. I’ll see you in a bit." Y/N smiled gratefully at the redhead once more before starting her way towards her room, dodging people dancing. She needed to get away from all of this for a while. Sometimes parties like this overwhelmed Y/N, especially because she always let her friends mingle while she stayed in the corner observing everyone. She would also socialize a bit and dance with her friends, but she wasn’t always in the mood and now seemed like it.
"Hey! Watch your fucking step, you stupid bitch." Y/N heard a familiar tone reaching her ears when she bumped into someone after waving past a couple making out heavily near the stairs.
"Here it is. Still a bitch, like always." Y/N scoffed and rolled her eyes when she turned around and met a pair of ocean blue eyes, "of course- it was too good to know Kate fucking Bishop changed. Always the same old shit." Y/N didn’t even bother to apologize to Kate as she scoffed at her once more when she sent her a withering glare and then walked away from her, moving up the stairs to go to Wanda’s bedroom, dodging a few more horny teenagers making out with a disgusted face on her way there. As soon as she arrived in front of Wanda’s door, she used the key Wanda gave her to unlock it and walked inside, sighing contentedly. She only realized someone followed her when she felt a hand lay on her shoulder blades and push her harshly into the room before she could turn around and close the door and slammed the door closed a second later instead. "What the fuck?"
"I wasn’t done talking." Kate exclaimed in a bitchy tone and crossed her arms, blocking the way for Y/N when she tried to walk out of the room and away from her.
"Well, I was. So, fuck off." Y/N sneered through gritted teeth and stared angrily at Kate, who just scoffed at her.
"You’re insufferable, you know that?" Kate took a step forward, but Y/N wasn’t scared of her unlike everyone else in their school, so she stayed put in her spot, with her arms crossed and a defiant smile on her lips, knowing it irritated the black haired girl to no end.
"I’m the insufferable one? God Kate, I can’t even with you."
"What’s that supposed to mean?"
"It means that you are fucking crazy. A few weeks ago you were so high you apologized to me for treating me like shit and were all over me and now you treat me like shit, again. Make up your damn mind."
"You deserved it. You stomped on my shoes." Kate countered back childishly, arching an eyebrow up and staring back at Y/N resolutely, moving a step forward to stand a few feet from her.
"IT WAS A FUCKING ACCIDENT!"
"Sure it was." Kate scoffed with a roll of her eyes and Y/N furrowed her eyebrows in confusion at her words, "you are trying to catch my attention since the Spring Fling." Kate lifted her right eyebrow up defiantly and stared intently into Y/N’s eyes, who sighed out in annoyance, already exasperated with this conversation.
"Jesus, Kate. Not everybody wants your attention." Y/N stated with an irritated tone, taking a small step forward and staring up at Kate angrily, who just put that annoying, smug smile on her lips.
"That’s not true. You want my attention just like everybody else. I noticed you staring at me during lunch these past weeks." Kate arched her right eyebrow up defiantly and smiled triumphantly when she watched Y/N’s face fall for just a moment before she resumed her hard stare, already gloating for winning their argument, like she always does.
"That’s not true." Y/N countered back unconvincingly, slapping her forehead inwardly at her wavering tone.
"Oh it is. I can feel your eyes on me, all the time. It’s like you’re still obsessed with me." Kate pushed her hair back with a quick tilt of her head and smirked proudly at Y/N, who was now fuming with rage at her accusations.
"How dare you?! I was never obsessed with you. And I never will. You plastics think we are all in love with you, something that is so far away from the truth!"
Kate listened to Y/N ramble with a lost expression on her face as her eyes lost focus and fell on Y/N’s lips moving and instinctively licked her own longingly. After a few moments, without properly thinking, her mouth opened on its own and she spoke before she could stop herself, interrupting Y/N altogether. "Fuck, you look so hot when you’re mad."
"And you- wait what?" Y/N trailed off and stared at Kate for a few seconds with a confused frown on her face as her mind caught up on what Kate just said. Her confusion expression immediately switched into a shocked one when the black haired girl didn’t add another word and leaned forward to crash their lips together hungrily. "Oh- hm-." Y/N mumbled on Kate’s lips in surprise as they devoured her own greedily, her mind and body reeling on what the hell was taking place for just a second, before she finally realized. Kate Bishop was kissing her. That thought alone instantly kickstarted her brain into functioning again and she kissed Kate back just as hungrily, pushing the butterflies running around her stomach aside and focusing on Kate’s mouth instead. Kate was relentless and eager as her lips moved over Y/N’s ones fervently while her hands fisted in Y/N’s hair and pulled on her scalp hard to make her moan into the kiss so she could slip her tongue in without her permission and lick every angle of Y/N’s mouth she could reach. She swallowed another moan when she started sucking on Y/N’s tongue hungrily and hummed delighted into the kiss. But Y/N, the stubborn girl that she was, didn’t let the black haired girl take charge of the kiss so easily, so she bit down on Kate’s bottom lip harshly when Kate turned her head to the other side to change their kiss angle and started sucking on her tongue greedily instead, her hands gripping Kate’s waist harder to push her more into her body. She felt powerful when Kate melted into the kiss and moaned pitifully at her tongue when it slid over hers and forced its way into her mouth to lick it thoroughly. Her hands gripped Kate’s hips tighter when she changed the angle of the kiss and Kate whimpered again into her mouth. A thud on the door made the two girls jump apart abruptly and both cursed at whoever bumped into the door while staring hungrily at one another and panting heavily to regain some needed breath in their burning lungs. Their eyes glinted with desire and lust they both were sure they had never felt for someone before and their hands grasped at one another firmly in fear the world would collapse if they let go of the other. And they just stayed there. For what felt like was hours, but were just an handful of seconds. After blinking at one another when they fell back down on earth, the two girls leaned forward again to kiss just as hungrily and this time it was Y/N’s tongue that slid past Kate’s slightly parted lips without permission and licked every nook and cranny of her mouth, while her hands deliberately slid down from her hips and gripped her ass hard, squeezing the firm flesh into her hands and triggering a guttural moan from Kate as she bucked her ass into Y/N’s hands.
"Hm- fuck- lock the door." Kate murmured sultrily between kisses and bit down on Y/N’s bottom lip before whining loudly onto her mouth when Y/N squeezed her ass once more and grunted needily as she surged forward for another intense kiss.
"W-why?" Y/N let out in a whimper when Kate pulled on her scalp hard to make her head lean back and attack her neck with open-mouthed kisses.
Kate took her time on Y/N’s neck as she licked, kissed and bit on her skin lustfully then let another groan escape her throat when Y/N gripped her ass hard to grab her attention and pulled away from her luscious skin to look into Y/N’s eyes hard. "Because I want you so fucking bad and I don’t want anyone to interrupt us."
"Oh shit-fuck- okay." Y/N leaned forward again and bit down on Kate’s bottom lip sharply to draw out another moan from Kate and take the opportunity of her parted lips to sneak her tongue back in her mouth while using her hands on her ass to push her up and make her wrap her legs around her waist, so she could walk towards the door without stopping their kisses.
"Hm, I like this feisty side of you." Kate moaned between kisses and started grinding her clothed, aching core onto Y/N’s covered abdomen teasingly and smiled wickedly when she felt the girl stumble a bit in her steps at her gesture. Y/N grunted and tried to regain focus quickly as she walked towards the door and slammed Kate onto it hard, making the girl let out an obscene whine at the show of strength and buck her hips again on her abs. "Hurry up already."
"Shut up." Y/N gritted through her teeth harshly, leaning her body onto Kate and make her lean securely on the door to prevent her to drop on the floor and moving one of her hands still glued onto Kate’s ass into her left pocket to grab the key she stashed in it, fumbling a bit to slid it into the lock when Kate started leaving open-mouthed kisses on her neck and nibbling on her pulse point from time to time. Y/N grunted out lowly and closed her eyes to ground herself at the pleasure pumping fast in her veins and took a deep breath to gain enough self-control to finally slid the key in the lock and lock the door.

It was late and cold, Jack was hurting and angry. He’d gone back to the newsies from Pulitzer’s office, trying to disband the strike. The boys didn’t take this well, yelling and shouting at him like they hadn’t been friends for most of their lives. He stormed around on his rooftop, kicking and punching the railings, his breathing ragged as his body tried to keep warm in the cold air, and his brain tried to fight off the emotions that were becoming all too much for him to contain. The newsies, however, weren’t even the half of what was working him up so much. No, it was you. He was furious and sad.
While in Pulitzer’s office, he noticed the stamp patterned over all the documents spread all over his desk. Jack could barely remember what Pulitzer said to him. His head hurt, his brain felt like lead. That stamp had the same emblem as the one in your necklace, the one you’d told him was a family crest.
He wasn’t exactly being quiet up there, the echo of metal ringing and his angry cries made it pretty easy for you to find him.
“Jack,” you spoke his name as you climbed up the ladder to meet him.
Jack took a sharp breath in, “you shouldn’t be here.”
“What? Jack, we’re worried ab—“
“You’re worried, huh? Yeah, right.” Jack’s voice was raw with emotion, his words tinged with bitterness as he cut you off.
You frowned, confusion knitting your brows together as you approached him cautiously. “What are you talking about, Jack? What’s going on?”
He turned away from you, unable to meet your gaze as he wrestled with the truth threatening to spill from his lips. “I knew it was too good to be true,” he confessed, his voice barely a whisper, “I saw your matching family crest with Pulitzer. Nice surprise, really. I mean, how long did you think you could lie for?”
You froze, your heart skipping a beat as his words sunk in. “Jack, I…”
He spun around to face you, his eyes filled with a tumult of emotions – anger, sadness, confusion. “You lied to me, a-and every other newsie” he accused, his voice cracking.
Tears welled in your eyes as you reached out to him, but he recoiled, pulling away from you. “Jack, please, let me explain—”
But he shook his head, his jaw clenched with determination. “I don’t want to hear it,” he spat, his words laced with hurt.
“Jack, I’m not my father.”
“No.”
“Jack-“
“I—I’m not an idiot. I shoulda known,” he groaned, “girls like you don’t wind up with guys like me. Just piss off.”
With that, he turned away from you, his shoulders hunched against the biting wind as he retreated into the darkness of the rooftop.
You weren’t about to let him do that.
“No Jack,” you gripped the back of his shirt, pulling it to turn him to face you. Before he had the opportunity to turn back around, you gripped the collar of his shirt in both hands, forcing him to look at you.
“I am not my father. I am on your side, Jack. YOUR SIDE. I didn’t tell you he was my father because I knew you’d immediately disregard me.” You stated, not once letting your eye contact be broken.
Jack's gaze softened as he looked into your eyes, the intensity of your close proximity playing with his head. He swallowed hard, his throat tight with emotion as he struggled to find the right words to say.
You could see the conflict playing out in his eyes, the battle between his wounded pride and the sliver of hope he still had left. And then, without a word, you released your grip on his shirt and took a step back, your own emotions threatening to overwhelm you.
You gripped at your necklace. With one hard yank, you pulled it off your neck, snapping the clasp. He watched as you leant over the railing, tossing it as far into the night as you could. Turning away from him, you took a deep breath, steeling yourself for what you knew would come next – rejection, dismissal, the final nail in the coffin of what could have been.
But then, just as you began to descend the ladder, his voice stopped you in your tracks.
"Y/N."
You paused, your heart pounding in your chest as you turned to look at him from the ladder.
"So we wasn’t too good to be true?" he asked, his voice soft yet filled with uncertainty.
You hesitated for a moment, your mind racing with a thousand thoughts of what to say. And then, summoning every ounce of courage you had left, you climbed back up the ladder and leaned against the railing, meeting his gaze head-on.
"Why don't you kiss me and find out," you challenged, your voice barely above a whisper.
Jack scoffed and shook his head. But as he looked into your eyes, he realized there was no jest in your expression, only a fierce determination and a vulnerability that mirrored his own.
“Wait, you’re serious?” he asked, his voice tinged with astonishment, his accent thick with disbelief.
You didn’t say anything, your gaze never leaving his as you held his stare, your heart pounding in anticipation.
And then, without another word, Jack closed the distance between you, his hands cupping your face as he pressed his lips to yours in a kiss that was both tender and passionate.
In that moment, everything else faded away – the cold, his anger, his hurt, your fears, the weight of the world on your shoulders. There was only Jack, only the warmth of his touch, the softness of his lips, and the overwhelming rush of emotions that came with him. Good ones.
There was a hunger in the way he kissed you, as if he was trying to convey all the emotions he couldn’t put into words. You pulled away, the soft smacking sound of your lips parting from his broke the silence.
“I am Y/N Pulitzer, Jack Kelly. Or should I say, Francis Sullivan.” You teased.
“You know?” His eyes widened, wondering how on earth you found out his birth name.
You shrugged, “We’re even now,” and extended your hand for him to shake.
“Nah,” he pushed your hand away, back down by your side, “I’d rather kiss.”
He smiled, pulling your body into his until your lips met again.

Literally not a single soul asked for more information about my idea for a Florence + the Machine jukebox musical of Shakespeare’s Othello (because, well, why would they?) but I have a lot of time on my hands so buckle up because you’re getting more information
(If you want to be able to better picture my mad rambling, I'd recommend playing the songs so you know what parts I'm referring to)
Opening number: 100 Years (from High As Hope)
We open on an almost empty stage with Desdemona slowly stepping into the spotlight as she sings the first few lines (I believe in you and in/our hearts we know the truth/And I believe in love and the/darker it gets the more I do); if we want to get super specific she’s wearing a white dress that’s a similar shape to the one Florence wears on the album art because just yes yes yes and also angel imagery for the win and ALSO over the course of the production her dress becomes pale pink or grey and then very gradually gets darker but in fact the nightdress she wears when she dies is back to white again. She does not bleed, people, she is the only character that dies without bleeding (!!!!!!!) and I will never shut up about that. Anyway, she sings up to the repetition of “and never, and never turn to night” with orchestral accompaniment and then when the “Then it’s just too much” line hits and the beat comes in things change. More lights come on and the chorus (wearing all black) move slowly into the stage; they’re tap dancing, creating the beat/ rhythm of the song. As they’re moving in Desdemona seems to show some level of fear towards them, constantly switching focus to see them approaching her on all sides; they represent the inescapability of her being the tragic hero. Notable: Desdemona is performing ballet and maybe some lyrical but I’m kind of imagining her en pointe for a lot of this; the chorus is performing tap. At natural breaks in the music and rhythm the tap dancers freeze in place for Desdemona to dance whilst she sings the next lines. On the second rendition of “then it’s just too much” vocal accompaniment to Desdemona’s melody begins and members of the chorus grab Desdemona’s shoulders and arms to pull her backwards, as she continues to sing she tries to break away from them and they follow her/she falls into other chorus members. They close in on her and she is completely covered until the rise in the music on the next rendition of “And then it’s just too much” when she reaches upwards and is lifted above the group, set down on the same line. The chorus continue to seemingly fight her through the next two lines. Then entrance of Othello comes on “I let him sleep, and as he does”. He does not sing yet. What we’re seeing here is more about Desdemona’s thoughts than it is actual events; Othello enters and takes Desdemona’s hand to briefly dance together, including him lowering her almost to the floor and then snatching her back to her feet again on “my heart bends and breaks so many, many times”. They stand opposite each other for “And is born again with each sunrise” and Desdemona reaches to touch his cheek. Othello catches her hand in the air and holds it so she walks with him as he begins to exit (he is walking backwards) and he sings the repeat of the line, but as they approach the wing he turns and exits alone, abandoning Desdemona on stage to be taken hold of by the chorus again in the following instrumental. For the final verse the chorus join Desdemona in singing but she is still the only main character on stage
Othello and Desdemona Duet: I’m Not Calling You A Liar (I should mention I’m not listing these in any particular order and also I do not have a copy of Othello with me rn to double check that I've got order right so I won't be trying just in case I get mixed up)
Gonna be so honest I feel like if you know the song then this one is self-explanatory, but I would also really love a quiet, sad, short reprise of it in the last scene with Desdemona on the bed reaching up to cup Othello's cheek and whispering "And I love you so much/I'm gonna let you kill me" before she dies
Emilia and Iago Duet: Back In Town
Iago and Emilia are alone on stage. The song begins after the exit of Desdemona at stage left and Emilia, who followed her almost to the wings, is subsequently standing alone at down or centre stage left and does not immediately know that Iago is standing somewhere behind her upstage right. Emilia steps slowly away from where she was been watching Desdemona leave and slowly starts to approach the audience as the music begins, and sings the first two lines believing she is still alone - Never really been alive before/I always lived in my head. Iago steps forward from the shadows and sings the next two lines (And sometimes it was easier/Hungover and half dead) taking Emilia by surprise, as though he is simply stating fact to her and she is forced to nod along and accept them . At this point Iago takes over the song and from now on sings most of it as a solo. He approaches Emilia across the stage and takes hold of her - notably by the wrist, not by the hand, to pull her in as he sings “I’m back in town why don’t we go out?” and on “spin” of the next line twirls her across the stage and straight into him so she falls against his chest and he is holding her up. The choreography continues in a relatively similar fashion as the song goes on; it is a slow dance, they are constantly close together, it is not entirely believable that Emilia wants to be there. To a casual eye it may appear that they are simply dancing together, but when you actually watch them you can see that her movements are always half a beat behind his, and always in the direction that he moves her. He never lets go of her for long, and in the brief moments of freedom that she catches she tries to move away as though it is part of the dance, as though she thinks she can hide her true intent beneath fluid motions that mimic his own, but every time he notices and forces her back. This is both a metaphor for their entire relationship and foreshadowing of her death. By the time he’s sing “And if you get spat on that’s just your big city baptism, you’re the star of the show” it is plainly evident that he is trying to convince her to do something for him. On this line Emilia finds herself with her back pressed against Iago’s chest as they both face out to the audience, his hand raised as though showing her a name is glowing lights, and she follows the movement of his hand with her head and with awe, eagerness, and the slightest edge of terror in her eyes. From here, as the lines continue, Iago turns and dips her slowly towards the floor. Emilia’s leg extends and he reaches his free arm to force her raised foot into pointe/demipointe; she is not committed to this dance, but he will force her to be. On the final lines Iago lifts her back to standing and pulls her close to him, moving her hands so she is clasping them together and he is clasping hers to his chest. He lifts her chin with his fingers so she is forced to look up at him as he sings “‘cause it’s always the same”. Still holding her chin, he looks out to the audience when he sings “I came for the pleasure but I stayed,” and it is Emilia who sings the echo “Yes, I stayed,” not at first looking at the audience but directly up to where his hand is now retracting from where he moved her to. She slowly turns her face towards the audience as they harmonise together for the final words: For the pain. On the final, low beats of the music Iago paces away and Emilia stumbles as she realises that he truly was the only thing holding her up. He exits stage right and Emilia sinks to her knees, watching him - a direct reflection of her watching Desdemona leave just three or four minutes ago on the other side.
Emilia Song 1: What Kind of Man
This will immediately follow on from the one above, thus beginning with Emilia knelt on the stage alone somewhere near centrestage right, looking out into the wings. She will sing the very opening lines exactly where she is, I envision only a very brief pause between these songs, and then slowly begin to stand and brush herself off so that she is ready to start walking towards centrestage by the time she is singing “I’d already had a sip, so I reasoned I was drunk enough to deal with it”. She sings alone at first; the stage is dark but for a spotlight on her, the orchestral accompaniment is relatively low to add emphasis to quite how complete her loneliness is in this moment - she is not safe, she does not know what to do, and the one person she can usually confide in and trust (Desdemona) is not only not here but also the very subject of the terrifying questions Emilia must now grapple with. On the higher background notes surrounding the line “and with one kiss” Emilia raises her hands and thrusts them towards her chest as though there is a blade between them, as though these hands belong to someone other than herself. She is both foreshadowing her own death with this movement, in the very pattern that her husband will commit it, and also presenting the image of her very first kiss with Iago being the thing that sealed her fate rather than anything within the content of the play: Emilia was doomed from the start, perhaps arguably doomed by the narrative, because her marriage is not one that she would have ever been able to survive. On that note I would really like to emphasise the youth of these characters so I would probably change “a fire of devotion that lasted 20 years” to “the fire of devotion that’s lasted all these years” so that we don’t get confused and tangled in the numbers of it. On this line (You inspired the fire of devotion/That’s lasted all these years) Emilia looks towards the wing where Iago exited with longing in her expression, but as she turns away her face hardens and her voice gains new vigour for the disgust and outrage with which she spits “What kind of man loves like this?”. And now we get the beat dropppppp. The music swells and gets louder; the lighting change is remarkable - lines spotlights running up and down stage, overlapping each other in places, and through them we can see the chorus moving into place. The slow, balletic movements of Emilia that have been the remnants of the control Iago instilled in her during Back In Town are abandoned completely in favour Contemporary as she paces backwards and the lights settle to illuminate the entire stage. The chorus are two lines of people all in black and Emilia, dressed in either red or grey I haven’t quite decided yet (maybe she is in grey and Bianca is in red??), is at the centre of the front line. The take up various positions with arms raised at strange angles and on the low notes of the background music turn their wrists until the beat hits - when they stamp their feet and snap their wrists into position. (Pls note I am not looking a score of anything I’m just listening to spotify so I might be badly screwing up musical terminology/details but I’m hoping you can gather which parts I mean) All participate in this until the lyrics begin. The “oohs” are sung by the chorus. When the lyrics begin Emilia steps forward to sing them, maintaining the same energy, and the chorus continue the same choreography until the repetition of “What kind of man” begins. As the repetition of these lines begins Emilia paces backwards and the two lines of chorus morph into a crowd that semi-circle close around her back. They grab Emilia on each beat, releasing her in between, and pull her in different directions as she sings (+the chorus are providing vocal accompaniment).At first it doesn’t particularly appear that she’s fighting them but as we exit the chorus to approach “You’re a holy fool all coloured blue” she does; she throws herself forwards on this line and the chorus are forced to relinquish her. She spreads her arms and the chorus are thrown backwards

The chorus are thrown backwards and spiral out to create a larger curve. Two chorus members take hold of Emilia’s arms to lift her and carry her a short distance upstage as she sings, raising and lowering her within the confines of the line “You do such damage how do you manage?” At the end of which Emilia is briefly lost in the crowd before she appears trying to force her way between two chorus members who are creating a wall in front of her, reaching out towards the audience as she sings “trynna crawl in back for more”. She gives in at the end of this line and sways sidewards as though fainting, caught by chorus members and lowered to her knees as she sings the repetition of the “and with one kiss” refrain. This time she remains on her knees for the first “What kind of man loves like this?” and then bound to her feet and continues to dance for the following. The chorus sing the following lines as Emilia dances I don’t have super specific moves in mind for this but continuing the same energy and the same style, I want everything about this to both vastly contrast and deeply reflect who she was in the previous song. Emilia begins to sing again for “But I can’t beat you/Cause I’m still with you” and the following verse, for which the chorus continue to provide vocal accompaniment. The chorus join her again when the What Kind Of Man chorus begins again. The dance and choreography continue in a similar fashion until the very last line; the chorus exit in a whirlwind and leave Emilia alone on stage as the music dies down to sing much quieter “What kind of man?” She has fallen still, her hands clutched closer to her stomach as though she is already holding the wound that will kill her
Ensemble song with Othello and other solos (maybe even to close act 1??): Howl
Starts with the stage empty except for Othello. The chorus slowly move in, all wearing flowy white costumes. The dance is one of slow, consistent movements during the intro music but on the accented notes they make sharper hand or leg motions before continues the same smooth line much slower as the music relaxes. Othello is mostly still during this but he does pace slowly into centre stage. Desdemona also slowly walks in during the intro, having returned to a long white dress instead of the pink or grey or something like that that she'll have been wearing in her previous scene. She moves very much like the chorus do, whilst Othello moves just as he usually does. Othello takes Desdemona's hands and pulls her in to dance with him as he sings the opening lines "If you could only see the beast you've made of me/I held it in but now it seems you've set it running free". It is very much that Othello is controlling the dance and Desdeoma is following him, an eerie parallel to Iago and Emilia during Back In Town. He spins her beneath his arm on the lines "Screaming in the dark/I howl when we're apart" and she leans back with her weight on one demi-pointe and in the arm he has around her, the othr leg extended. Othello sings "Drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart" and leans into her, his other arm wrapping around her so the audience can barely see her. Desdemona drops into him and to her knees, now facing the audience kneeling directly in front of Othello, who takes tight hold of her shoulders and leans down towards her ear as he sings "my fingers claw your skin/try to tear my way in/you are the moon that breaks at night for which I have to howl". For most of this the chorus have been in pairs mimicking a similar dance to Othello and Desdemona, but now they have turned and are watching them, moving slowly closer. When Othello repeats the last two lines his voice is more desperate, clinging to Desdemona whilst she stares blankly out at the audience, barely seeming to notice his presence. On the rising repeat of "howl" the chorus closes in around them and pull the pair in opposite directions. Othello and the entire ensemble sing the word "howl" together. The following two lines are a repeat of this word, during which the dance becomes more rhythmic and Othello and Desdemona are moved to face each other on opposite sides of the stage. Though the chorus still appear to be attempting to separate them, they sing to each other across a gap that has formed down centrestage and are fighting to reach other. They exchange lines of the next verse as follows:
Desdemona: There's no holding back
Othello: I'm making to attack
Desdemona: My blood is singing with your voice
Othello: I want to pour it out
Desdemona: The Saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound
Othello: I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground
During this exchange they break free and meet in centre stage, taking up a dramatic dance that is mostly in hold. However, Desdemona pulls away from hold on her "The Saints can't help me now" line, and Othello draws her back in on his. Desdemona steps forwards, as though telling the audience, when she sings "like some child possessed, the beast howls in my veins". Othello grabs her by the shoulders and pulls her in, leaning over her almost as though he would go to kiss her neck as he sings "I want to find you, tear out all your tenderness". Desdemona throws herself free as both of them sing the repeated "howl" lines, joined again by the chorus, but this time Desdemona's voice can distinctly be heard differently from the rest because she is not singing from any kind of power or passion but from genuine terror. By the end of this chorus Othello and Desdemon are in an almost violent dance together, half in hold and half out, big sweeping arm movements and I'm imagining that Desdemona's skirt would unpin to fan out and show a gorgeous wide black or dark red skirt that would properly like swish around whilst they were dancing and stuff (does that make sense???). They continue to dance without singing whilst the chorus, who are back in their pairs and dancing faster, more intense dances than before but none quite to the extent of the main couple, sing "Be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers/Starts so soft and sweet and/turns them to hunters". I'm imagining that the chorus' skirts could also unpin in the same way so either Desdemona's would turn black and all of theirs would turn red or vice versa, but I want to kind of see some variety in the chorus outfits maybe (??) instead of them all being identical so I might have to put a bit of thought into that. Anyway the point is that after this line we get a big rhythmic chorus dancing moment and it looks super cool, they're singing the low "hunters" "howl into your heart" repetitions and moving their swishy skirts and dancing and then they part to show Othello and Desdemona again and Desdemona is now dressed in a super dramatic dress that is entirely the colour that was hidden inside her skirt and the skirt of this new dress is insane and Othello all but carries her to the front centre stage and he is all over her as he sings "the fabric of your flesh, pure as a wedding dress/Until I wrap myself inside your arms I cannot rest/The Saints can't help me now" and everything kinda continues in a similar style with some gorgeous choreography. I'm kind of imagining there being a table on stage by the end because I want Othello to lift Desdemona onto it and her to lay down on it, don't ask me how the table got there I don't know, but this happens with the massive dramatic flowing over the sides of the table and onto the ground whilst the chorus sings "A man who's pure of heart and says his prayers by night/May still become a wolf when the autumn moon is bright" and I'm picturing that they would sing these lines like they were a Church choir gathered around Othello and Desdemona, and they continue to sing the closing lines of the song as Desdemona stands up and Othello climbs onto to the table after her. He unpins the skirt and the fabric all falls away (removed from the stage by chorus members) like a waterfall so that he and Desdemona (who will be wearing trousers/leggings/a leoptard) beneath the skirt) can dance together on the table top whilst the chorus continue to sing, moving away from the choir-imagery and back to the earlier style. This continues right up until the very last line ("I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground") where Othello drops to his knees and clasps his arms around Desdemona's legs on the word "ground" and the curtain falls.
I am wondering if this would work for the act 1 closer????? But I'm not 100% sure where the interval would be
Emilia Song 2: Which Witch
If this isn't Emilia questioning herself for "betraying" Desdemona and whether or not she should give Iago the handkerchief then I don't know what is. I don't have loads to say about this one but the most potent lyrics for it in my opinion are these ones:
And it's my whole heart/deemed and delivered a crime/I'm on trial
Who's a heretic now/ am I making sense?
I'm miles away/He's on mind/I'm getting tired of crawling all the way
I'm not beaten by this yet/You can't tell me to regret/Been in the dark since the day we met/Fire help me to forget

And it's my whole heart/burned but not buried this time
We'd have all of these lines (ie most of the song) whilst she's weighing up what she ought to do and she'd feeling really strong but then there's a small musical interlude where Iago comes on stage without her expecting him to, they speak briefly and she hands the handkerchief over; he walks away as she tries to ask him what he intends to do with it, chasing after him until he physically shoves her off and keeps walking. Emilia falls to the ground and as the music sweels again she sings the closing lines "Chained and shackles, oh/I'll unravel, oh/It's a pity, oh" [she gets to her feet] "Never to return/But I never learn/It's a pity, oh" and then repeats it with particular emphasis on the transition from "Never to return" to "Say I won't return". By the time she finishes the final rendition of "it's a pity, oh" the orchestra has almost completely died out and she wanders alone offstage humming the final few notes to herself

terrorized children by standing on a play structure for an undisclosed amount of time with a giant smile on my face because it looked like the hit list set (no i did not blast broadway here i come—i was very tempted to...but alas, children)
watched the concert proposal video x1000 times (newsies recap too, but that's longer and i have less time for that)
got a friend to spontaneously search up my broadway trio (found out she's already a laura osnes fan, many thanks to hallmark christmas movies)
spammed a group chat that is sick and tired of jeremy with jeremy gifs (just...you know...in case they forgot about him XD)
stayed a friend's place until 12 am jeremy-ing 🙈 (we were watching finding neverland, her first time....and then we jj youtube spiraled XD she was controlling the remote it wasn't *all* me XD)

You never thought you’d be more grateful for a lunch break in your life. The cast had been dismissed for an hour just after running the emotional monologue from the character Paul, which promptly followed your solo dance number. Teching your routine wasn’t too much of a hassle, but the actual choreography was beyond grueling. You were more than ready for a breather.
Surprisingly, Schlatt, during the run, wasn’t a bother at all. You could’ve sworn you caught him glancing at you from the wings at certain points, and you couldn’t say for sure whether or not he had seen any of your solo at all, but during the monologue afterward in which everyone in the cast was offstage save for your castmate Mateo, Schlatt was nowhere to be found. 
Not that you had a problem with that, anyway. Hell, you didn’t care what all he fucked off to do as long as you didn’t have to be there for any of it.
Now, you could only do your best to rid your mind of all thoughts related to him as you sat in your dressing room, which you shared with Victoria and two other castmates, Sierra and Lola. Aside from your already established bond with Victoria, you’d taken it upon yourself to build a closer friendship with Sierra and Lola since they played the characters Maggie and Bebe respectively, so naturally you would have to stand near them in the chorus line formation. That was also partially the reason the four of you had been grouped together to share a dressing room, so it was only beneficial for you to have a good rep with both.
The four of you were plopped in a circle on the dressing room floor, accompanied by your other castmates Ari, Mateo, and Dante. All seven of you picked at your lunches, more interested in the conversation at hand than actually eating. However, the topic quickly shifted to the oh so mysterious new guy, and as much as you wanted to shut your brain off than have to listen to speculations about Schlatt, you were also insanely hungry. So, you simply forced yourself to sit there and listen.
That was just like Schlatt, you couldn’t help but think sourly. Always the center of attention, even when he wasn’t in the room.
“Has anyone actually gotten a chance to talk to him yet?” Lola asked, her amber eyes twinkling with curiosity as she scanned the group. 
“I accidentally bumped into him after we teched my scene,” Mateo piped up. “He was pretty nice. Apologized to me and all. Even though it was totally my fault.”
“Can I say he’s kinda hot?” Sierra was next to chime in, her silvery voice quickly filling the silence. A quiet laugh promptly rippled through the group, although it took a bit of willpower on your behalf to keep your own from sounding too forced. “Like, respectfully? I’d smash.”
“You’d smash anything that breathes.” Ari, seated behind her on the dressing room counter, nudged her teasingly with his leg.
“Hey, can you blame me? I’ve tried every dating app there is. I’m debating whipping out the last resort any day now.”
“eHarmony?”
“No. Becoming a nun.”
“Okay, but do we know why they brought in someone new so late in the process?” Victoria interrupts. “What happened to the old stagehand? What’s-his-face?”
“Who cares what his name was? He got fired, and good thing.” This heated answer was spat from Dante, who had been cast in the show as the lively tap-dancer Mike. His heavy Brooklyn accent was interwoven through every syllable as he continued, “He was a fuckin’ idiot, not to mention a total dick. Always actin’ like he knew everything, being a shit to Vanja and all. I’m surprised she didn’t kick his ass out sooner. But I heard they put out an open call for someone to fill in for ‘im. Anyone with at least basic knowledge of allat computery shit. I guess that’s how they roped the new guy in. Shat, or whatever he’s called.”
Of course. He made perfect sense for the job. He’d wanted to go into computer science before he’d gone down the rabbit hole of his own career. “Schlatt.” You couldn’t keep the correction from spilling from your lips. You weren’t all too thrilled to discover the way his name still tasted like acid on your tongue.
“Yeah. That.”
“Well, at least he seems nice.” Victoria shrugged. “Upgrade from the last dude.”
“Nice and sexy!” Sierra giggled, earning another nudge from Ari.
Despite yourself, you opened your mouth. You had the insatiable urge to say something, maybe a cryptic, biting remark directed towards Schlatt. Something about how nobody here knew what he was really like, how he was the furthest thing from nice, how he’d ruined everything. However, you were promptly interrupted by a knock on the dressing room door.
“Hello?” Lola called out, craning her neck to snag a better view of the visitor.
The door creaked open, and Lacey poked her head in. Lacey was a petite, curvy girl, her hair tied up in pigtails and extravagant eyeshadow powdered against her lids. She’d been cast as Val, so she figured going over the top in her stage look would fit the character. Nobody had the heart to tell her she looked clownish.
“Just wanted to tell you guys we have five minutes until we’re back,” she explained in her typical squeaky tone, a toothy grin spreading across her lips. “Vanja’s giving us a bit of extra time to get settled, though. She just finished introducing herself to Jay.”
For whatever reason, Lacey first-naming Schlatt created a strange feeling in the pit of your stomach. Nobody ever did that. Not in his circle, anyway. But you couldn’t necessarily fault her for that. She didn’t come from his circle. That was a you problem.
“Thanks, Lacey.” You quickly hopped to your feet, stashing what was left of your lunch back with your belongings. “I’m gonna go to the restroom real quick. Will someone let Vanja know in case I’m not back in time?”
“I got it,” Victoria instantly volunteered, to which you shot her a grateful smile.
“Go piss, girl!” Ari murmured, resulting in a collective snort among the group. He elicited a grin from you, too, but you’re already out the door by the time you clocked it.

Wandering through the twisting hallways of the backstage area reminded you of yet another thing you’d never get used to regardless of how long you’d been performing. It never seemed to fully register that the older the theatre, the more historic the building, the dingier the backstage was. And right now, you might as well have been traversing a maze.
All this for a piss.
You couldn’t tell how long it took you to actually locate the bathrooms within the labyrinthine hallways, and you could only imagine that, with your luck, it’d be even longer before you found your way back to the stage. And of course that proved to be true. Before you knew it, you were lost. It wasn’t your fault, you kept telling yourself. This is why you exclusively used the restrooms out in the theatre’s foyer. At least those were easy to find.
“Whoa!”
You were instantly snapped out of your daze as you collided with someone’s larger frame. You stumbled backward from the impact, but whoever you ran into quickly clamped their hands around your biceps to keep you from completely falling on your ass.
“Oh my god, I am so sorry, I-” Your vision refocused, your voice instantly trailing off as you gazed upward at the person before you. Schlatt’s eyes bore into yours, hints of both concern and amusement evident in his gaze. Suddenly, the grip on your arms turned from something relieving to much more revolting.
The corners of his lips tilted upward in the faintest of smiles as he let go of you, stepping back. You could feel his gaze raking over you, taking you in. “Hey, stranger,” he greeted, leaning against the wall beside him.
You wanted to walk away, turn your back on him this instant. But you couldn’t. You felt paralyzed. Rooted to the spot.
“Hi,” you muttered in return.
“How’s it goin’? Been a while, huh?”
“Yep.” No shit, it’s been a while. I never wanted to see you again. “I’ve been fine. Been busy with the show and all.”
“I can imagine. Seems like a lotta work already.”
“It’s Broadway. Of course it is.” Your tone came out a bit more biting than intended. Schlatt quickly seemed to catch on, his brow quirking up in a slight smirk.
“You’re right. Stupid thing of me to say.” He held up his hands in mock surrender. You huffed out a scoff, but it was clearly forced. “Well, uh, hey,” Schlatt tried once more after an awkward silence ensued. “I saw you dance a little bit. From the wings. You did… good.”
“Good, huh?” You folded your arms across your chest, a bit exasperated with how the conversation was going nowhere.
“Yeah. You did good,” he repeated, his eyes still glued to you. It was growing increasingly hard not to shudder under his stare, feeling like prey beneath him. Your stomach churned, and you could practically hear your heart’s frenzied beating within your eardrum. For a moment, he fell quiet once more, and you swore you saw his expression falter. Whatever air of confidence was there before seemed to melt, devolving into something softer, something unreadable… disappointment, maybe? Regret? “You look good, (Y/N).”
It felt like the world stopped at that. You had to fight every fiber within you that wanted to bark out an incredulous laugh. “Really?” you instead asked, bewilderment of his utter audacity clear in your voice. “Is this a joke?”
Schlatt instantly straightened, no longer leaning on the wall. An air of defensiveness flickered over him. “What? Can I not say you look good?”
“Are you actually asking me that?” It shouldn’t have been so easy for him to rile you up, get under your skin.
Schlatt’s lips flattened into a straight line as he heaved a heavy sigh. “(Y/N), come on. Listen, I know these aren’t ideal conditions, but-”
“Like hell they aren’t!” You ran a hand through your hair, feeling like you might as well have been on the brink of tearing every single strand out. “Just stop. Not now. Don’t do this to me.”
“Why not now? Look, we gotta talk at some point.”
“There isn’t anything to talk about. You made things very clear when you decided you were done with me,” you spat. Schlatt opened his mouth to protest, but you quickly interrupted. “Can you please just do me a solid and point me back to the stage? I’ve got more important things to focus on right now than this.”
He stopped dead in his tracks. His usually soft expression was icy, and it was evident by the way his eyes flitted all across your face that he was seriously debating what to do next. However, to your relief, he jerked his head over his shoulder. “Straight ahead behind me. Take a left, up the stairs, take a right. You'll find your way.”
You didn’t wait to say anything more. No sooner did the words escape his lips than you practically bolted past him, reciting the directives he’d given you over and over to occupy your mind. To anyone else in the cast, your exchange with Schlatt would have seemed entirely random. Up until this moment, you two hadn’t interacted once. How could it have bubbled up to this so quickly?
That was something only you and Schlatt knew. The history between you two. And yet, knowing that history like the back of each other’s hands, he still wanted to act like things were normal. He still wanted to try and pass off as if nothing happened. As if everything was fine. Tearing your heart and stomping on it, over and over and over again.

I entered the theatre with no expectations. I laughed, I cried, I had such a visceral experience that I had to come right back home and write out this review instead of putting it off for a week. All I knew beforehand was that Patti LuPone played a vegan lesbian in a Stockard Channing wig. Let me give you a rundown: Robyn (Patti) moves out to Iowa from The Bronx to live with a roommate she's never met named Sharon (Mia Farrow). Turns out, Robyn may or may not have a criminal past. Just your average scammer, con artist, soft drug dealer. Y'know, the usual. But she's leaving it all behind to start anew in Iowa. Well, stick-in-the-mud Sharon has nothing else going on in her dull little life, and she's very eager to learn the trade. Soon, these two roommates who have nothing in common are running a cute little business selling pot brownies to Sharon's book club. And it's all fun and games until Sharon suddenly has her gay awakening. And I mean, c'mon, who wouldn't fall for a mean criminal lesbian?
So, this is an early preview. The show doesn't officially open until next week, and there are still definitely some kinks that need ironing out. I actually think Patti was the weaker link here. She started off pretty stiff and gradually got better, but she has room for a lot of improvement. I don't really believe her as a lesbian, and I'd be curious to know if she has any queer female friends. I know she's got plenty of gay men in her circle as all Broadway Divas do, but what about the women she could model off of? As for Sharon, I didn't expect to be so charmed by Mia Farrow's character. She's really endearing, and just great in the role. Her character arc is catering to me specifically. A woman in her sixties abruptly discovering her latent homosexuality? Sign me the fuck up. Plotwise, it's just fun. There are a few lines here and there that come off awkwardly, but that might improve with time. It's not a play that's going to change the world, but it's one that I need to see again and again.
Oh, and by the way, I watched Patti LuPone and Mia Farrow slow-dance and kiss in a kitchen. And yeah, I'm kind of giddy about it.
Verdict: You Can Pry This Show Out of My Cold Dead Hands
