When Mikio betrayed Mizu, I was definitely confused. Like, this man seemed to have loved her, seemed to respect and enjoy her company. So, what gives?
It makes a lot more sense when you look through all of their main bonding moments and see that Mikio really enjoyed teaching Mizu things. Whether it be shooting apples down with a knife, horse care, horse riding, etc., he loved to show her how to do things. The first hint we get of his nature is when he tells Mizu to slow down as she speeds ahead of him on Kai. Bro didn’t want her to surpass him
So yeah, obviously he feels confused and threatened when this young woman is significantly better than him at something that he never taught her and that he prides himself in. Peak emasculation
