this is probably at least part hindsight bias but it's incredible how in the runaway bride (the only episode catherine tate was initially intended to be in) donna immediately feels like a full-time companion. her chemistry with ten is so good that you kind of forget she hasn't been running around in the TARDIS and they actually just met. it's crazy how she achieved something I never felt with any other one-time companions and it's probably one of the reasons she was brought back for series 4 to begin with

'...1. Voyage of the Damned - 2007

David Tennant's third festive special also featured pop princess Kylie Minogue playing a waitress called Astrid Peth who works aboard the Titanic. However, it isn't the legendary tragic vessel but rather a nuclear-powered interstellar cruise liner from the planet Sto, which is inspired by the original ship.

It is on a collision course for earth and it turns out that the culprit is the former cruise line owner Max Capricorn. He was bitter about being forced out of his own company and plotted the Titanic's collision with Earth to bankrupt the company and frame the board of directors for murder.

Astrid sacrificed herself to save the Doctor and he used the heat from entry into the Earth's atmosphere to restart the ship's engines and prevent the collision. The episode is also noteable for giving us our first glimpse of Bernard Cribbens as Wilfred Mott

With 13.31 million viewers and an 86 AI rating it is a clear winner for the most popular special.

2. The Next Doctor - 2008

The 2008 special The Next Doctor caused huge excitment as fans specualted that, after three years in the role, David Tennant's Doctor might regerneate into a new incarnation. However, the title turned out to be a curveball as the plot saw him encounter a man calling himself "the Doctor" who was played by David Morrissey.

Although initally The Doctor believed the man, who was suffering from amnesia, was e a future incarnation of himself he later realises that the Next Doctor is really a human called Jackson Lake. He was supposed to be the first missing person during the Cyberman invasion that has seen numerous children, pulled from workhouses around the city by Miss Mercy Hartigan (Derbhla Kirwan), are being put to work at an underground facility under Cybermen guard.

The Cybermen converted Hartigan into the controller for the "CyberKing", a giant mechanical Cyberman powered by the energy generated by the children.When she refused the Doctor's offer to leave the planet, he severed her connection to the CyberKing, exposing her to the emotion of what she had done which destroyed# both the Cybermen and Miss Hartigan.

The episode ended on a sweet note with with the Doctor and Jackson heading off to attend Christmas dinner in remembrance of those they have lost.

While not as popular as the number one onthe list it still garnered an impressive 13.10 million viewers and an AI of 86 making it second in the popularity ranking.

3. The End Of Time (Part One) - 2009

This two part special marked the end of David Tennant's era as the Doctor. It also saw the return of fan favourite John Simm as The Master and featured Succession star Brian Cox don heavy prosthetics to play an Ood. The plot saw a cult of women resurrect the Master, but his wife Lucy Saxon sabotaged the ceremony, causing him to be brought back with incredible strength but constant hunger.

Meanwhile the Doctor arrived back on Earth on Christmas Eve and reunited with Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbens). He found the Master at wastelands outside London, and learnt that the Master has been suffering from hearing the sound of drums.

The Master is laterplaced in custody of Joshua Naismith (DAvid Harewood) who has recovered a broken alien "Immortality Gate" and wants the Master to fix its programming. The Master activates the Gate, which he has reprogrammed to replace all of humankind's DNA with his own resulting in a planet full of lookalikes.

Elsewhere, the Lord President of the Time Lords (Timothy Dalton) asserted that the Time Lords will return.

The story is left hanging as part two was broadcast on New Years Day ensuring that the Doctor dominated the festive season. While this episode had 12.4 million viewers and an AI of 87 making it number 3 on the list of Christmas specials, it was actually beaten in the ratings part two with 12.27 million viewers and an AI of 89.

8. The Christmas Invasion - 2005

The first Doctor Who special of the rebooted era also marked David Tennant's debut as The Doctor after the departure of Christopher Eccleston. However, he spent most of the episode in his pyjamas in bed recovering from the effects of regeneration.

This meant that most of the focus of the episode was on tried and tested companion character Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). When she and her boyfriend are attacked by Santa robots; the Doctor theorised that energy from his regeneration has lured them here.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Harriet Jones (Penelope Wilton) was threatened by the leader of alien race the Sycorax into giving them half of the Earth's population as slaves. After Rose and her mother and boyfriend drag the Doctor onto the TARDIS, it is detected by the Sycorax and they transport it to their ship.

The pyjama clad Doctor challenges the Sycorax leader to a sword fight for the future of the Earth, which he eventually wins saving the planet.

With the new era of Doctor Who only one season in this garnered 9.84 million viewer and an AI of 84 making it the eighth most popular epsiode.

9. The Runaway Bride - 2006

The 2006 special introduced viewers to future companion Donna Noble played by Catherine Tate. To The Doctor's surprise she materialised in his TARDIS in her wedding dress.

Alhtough he returned her safely to her wedding the adventure didn't end there as the reception was attacked by robots dressed as Santa Claus. The Doctor discovered that they were being controlled remotely from space whch led him to the spider-like Empress of the Racnoss, played by an unrecognisable Sarah Parish, who had been hiding in hibernation at the edge of the universe.

The Doctor took travelled back billions of years wth Donna and discovered that an inert Racnoss ship became the core of the Earth as the planet formed around it. In the present day The Empress was trying to wake her children aboard with huon particles, which it turned out Donna's fianceé had been spiking her with, which is why she materialised on board the TARDIS..

Although The Doctor attempted to offer a peaceful solution the Empress refuseed, and the Doctor wass forced to flood the pit with water from the Thames in order to save the planet. Although he dropped Donna back home this wouldn't be the last we would see of her and she went on to become one of his most popular companions.

With 9.35 million viewers and an AI of 84 it is far from the most popular Doctor Who special but it does mark a pivotal point in the series...'

How Behind-the Scenes Issues Affected the Writing of Doctor Who (Both Good and Bad)

Doctor Who is such a fascinating show to look at from a Watsonian v. Doylist perspective. Like, entirely just from an episode writing point of view:

Twice Upon A Time feels so slow and meandering and even boring in places because Chris Chibnall didn't want to start his run as showrunner and Steven Moffat didn't want the show to lose the coveted Christmas timeslot (ironic, I know) so he bumped the Twelfth Doctor's regeneration from the end of The Doctor Falls (where it makes sense) to the end of the Christmas special

Boom Town (my beloved) only exists because originally there was going to be an episode in its spot explaining that Rose had been molded to be the Doctor's perfect companion (by the Doctor, gross) and the writer didn't have the time to commit to the show

The ending of Last Christmas feels like one inside-a-dream too many because originally Jenna Coleman was questioning whether she was going to leave the show or not and the ending was rewritten after the first readthrough when she decided she wanted to stay for another season

The first five episodes of Season 7 feel like each one takes place in a different genre because that's literally how Steven Moffat pitched it to the writers; for example, A Town Called Mercy was literally pitched as "Doctor Who does a Western"

Not so much a weird one but one I find cool: Eleven's first words and Thirteen's first words were literally written by Moffat and Chibnall respectively, as they were brought in to write the first words of the first Doctors of their runs so as to make it cohesive

The reason why Fourteen isn't wearing Thirteen's clothes when he regenerates is because Jodie Whittaker is much shorter than David Tennant and Russell T. Davies didn't want it to look like he was making fun of the genderfluidity of the Doctor (still think he made the wrong decision, but eh)

Wilfred Mott isn't in the Runaway Bride and Donna's father isn't in Partners in Crime because the actor who played Donna's father, Howard Attfield, died after filming several scenes for Partners In Crime, leading to the character of "Stan Mott" from Voyage of the Damned being written into Partners In Crime as Donna's grandfather

Astrid Peth doesn't die in the original drafts of Voyage of the Damned, but Russell T. Davies wrote what is generally considered one of the most emotional deaths in Doctor Who just because he wanted Kylie Minogue to be able to focus on her music career

Originally Oxygen was written as a prequel to Mummy on the Orient Express, where a corporate representative appeared on a monitor. Said representative was fired for his fumbling of the station and would later live on as the company computer, Gus

During Season 11, Chris Chibnall had to do some major rewrites for many of the one-off episodes, therefore The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos ended up being a first draft that made it to screen. He later admitted it was his least favorite episode of the series

And this is only a fraction of what I found in terms of major behind-the-scenes writing reasons. Though I am still totally willing to critique the product that made it to our screens, finding out the reasons behind some of the more badly written episodes of the show really made me feel sympathy for every showrunner of the show as well as appreciate a lot of the good episodes that ended up here despite the short production schedule/unexpected problems (once again, Boom Town my beloved AND everyone's favorite companion Wilfred Mott only exist because of unforseen problems). Absolutely bonkers, isn't it?

hey! I'm pretty new to your stories: currently reading curse words and loving it! (I started the first book with the mindset that I wouldn't be caught enough to miss some real life stuff because of reading... guess what, I missed some real life stuff reading.)

but now I have a question: the books have a pretty intricate plot with a lot of good payoffs for small things. which is very cool from a reader's point of view, but from the writer's one— can you maybe share some stuff about your process? especially in the early stages, how do you go from the initial spark of an idea and what this is about to a fully formed plot? would be cool if you're willing to share

anyway have a great day I'm off to start the third book hehe!

One thing to know about me is that I have just the worst possible imagination. Absolute pisspoor garbage imagination, nothing going on up there. When I want to plot, my process is simple:

Find a problem, then solve it.

Curse Words was born of several disparate story ideas coming together, but mostly I wanted to play with the magic system -- I wanted to write a story where spells were metaphysical parasites that possessed mages, and each mage could only cast their unique spell. The whole thing came about when reading The Princess Bride, specifically the chapter where Buttercup dreams of being a perfect baby and the doctor looking her over and regretfully informing her parents that she was born with mo heart -- I was possessed with this powerful impression of a slightly wacky doctor peering over the top of his rose tinted glasses to inform a pair of parents that their baby had a curse trapped in her heart. From there, it's find the problem, solve the problem.

I wanted to separate Kayden from his family and put him in an unfamiliar environment for the story so that he and the audience would be on a pretty similar level re: world information; isolated magic and a magic school is the easy way to do that. Okay, so why is this school isolated? Why is the curse thing not common knowledge? Why do the public fear curses and have such limited access to magic that it's not a part of Kayden's day-to-day, if it's so useful? Solve the problem; look at the economy. The unique nature of spells makes them difficult to scale up, and the unpredictable nature makes them inferior to technological solutions to problems in most large-scale issues. What does this say about how the Industrial Revolution would've affected the usefulness, and therefore the public perception, of magic? The logical conclusion is the Purity Revolution.

This school is gathering and teaching all these students; why? I wanted a clear division between witches like Kayden and a privileged elite that formed most of the school body; why are they different, how are the elite kids here, why are witches accepted and integrated into the student body? Solve the problem; look at the economy, the politics. Where are these rich kids getting their magic? Why pull in witches? One question answers the other. Why didn't Kayden and Kylie know that curses were spells in advance? Seems something that should be common knowledge. Look at the politics; tie that in. Logical conclusion: magic trap. We have this magic lake with a monster in it that we introduced super early for dramatic purposes and haven't explained yet. What can we do with that? Let's invent empowered water. Let's look at what that means for the creation of potions worldwide. Let's tie in the management of unmanageable spells. Let's elaborate on the structure our magic trap.

Now we have a channel of power. Curses parasitise witches; some are blessings, some are more trouble than they're worth. The school collects curses, domesticates them, makes them more useful, locks away or renders harmless that which it cannot make use of. More curses are collected over time, the school grows and grows and Refujeyo becomes stronger and stronger as they control more of the world's magic supply, but every system has a capacity. What's the effect of this infinite growth? Here we have a clear and unavoidable economic metaphor, so obvious that not centreing the story on this concept would basically be dishonest. Who's managing this collection, what does it say about the power of the school within mage society? How would such a school relate to the rest of Refujeyo; how would Refujeyo, collecting power like this, relate to and be viewed by other magical traditions, and by nonmagical society? Run through the reasoning, solve the problem.

Why would the school only approach Kayden as a teenager, after his curse caused problems? Surely the school would want to collect as many curses as if could as early as possible. There has to be a reason why they waited. This is a good one because it flows directly from the complex political relationships between Refujeyo and commonfolk politics that have to exist, AND ties neatly into critical character motivations that have to exist for book 1's main twist to function (notably, Malas Aksoy's actions). Sort this out for book 1 and accidentally create a critical political point for the rest of the entire series.

I started writing book 1 with the idea of the court case and subsequent twist about Kayden's curse being the big mystery, but Kayden still needs something to actually do at school. We have this mage who we threw in to rescue Kayden and Kylie from the lake, and had Max hero worship her for flavour; she seems to be becoming central to a lot of interactions for some reason. A lot of dramatic stuff is therefore automatically happening in her presence, but why is this incredibly accomplished and intelligent mage fucking up so much? We've established her as careful and thorough. We need a reason for all these accidents beyond random chance. Someone's sabotaging her -- why? Let's look at our established characters and figure out who has means and motive, and who the most fun red herrings would be.

How could a place like Refujeyo, such a complex and time-consuming project that would have to involve the cooperation of so very many mages, even get built? How would it survive long enough to be powerful? When and where did this happen? We've already established the Purity Revolution; maybe there was something more coordinated than just random undirected economic forces. We've established some incredibly powerful mage families and the old system of apprenticeship and inheritance; we know that the most powerful family in Refujeyo used to have a prophecy and owned a very powerful place that helps prophecies specifically. They could coordinate something, given enough motivation and the help of enough other powerful mages. What kind of motivation? Let's go back to the Purity Revolution. If tech develops alongside magic without central oversight of some kind, what could magic enhance? What problems could be foreseen that would make this kind of investment worth it? How does Refujeyo save the world?

Tie this into our power channel. Refujeyo's attempt to save the world endangers the world due to infinite growth and power being passively collected by those who benefit from the dangerous status quo. It fits our economy metaphor, because they're essentially the same thing, just putting in magic instead of money as a means of power.

Find a problem, then solve it.

The important thing with this method is to keep your solutions cohesive. If you come up with a new different reason for every thing, your plot will look scattered and disorganised. We don't want to look like we're just pulling the story out of our arse. I mean, we are pulling the story out of our arse, that's what writing fiction is, but it's a big part of our job to help our audience suspend their disbelief on that. Whenever possible, you should look for answers that solve multiple things and weave disparate parts of the story together; this is especially true when they relate to the core plot or central theme of your story.

Also, leave gaps for reader inference. You don't have to answer every single question, you just need to make sure that some plausible answer exists for every single question. Sometimes this involves saying less, not more, and letting the audience figure it out.

'...11. “The Next Doctor” (2008)

The Doctor, still reeling from the loss of Donna, encounters what he thinks is his future self. But he’s wrong! This person is Jackson Lake (David Morrissey) and something weird has happened to him. Something involving the Cybermen, in fact.

“The Next Doctor” is one of the more forgettable Christmas specials, but it’s still a very fun episode with some twists and turns along the way.

9. “The End of Time, Part One” (2009)

The only reason “The End of Time, Part One” isn’t higher up the list is because technically it’s only half a story, with the second and last part airing on New Year’s Day. It also has to do a lot of heavy lifting setting things up for the big finale of Tennant’s regeneration.

But all in all it’s an exciting Christmastime with the Doctor that takes us to some places we haven’t been before, alongside beloved companion Wilf (Bernard Cribbins). Oh, and the Master (John Simm) is back … and now he’s eating people! Merry Christmas!

5. “Voyage of the Damned” (2007)

Wait, is that KYLIE MINOGUE? It is indeed! The world-famous Australian singer stars in “Voyage of the Damned” as Astrid, a waitress aboard a floating replica of the doomed ocean liner Titanic. And if you think that sounds wild, well, we’re just getting started.

Things soon turn into a space-set take on The Poseidon Adventure, with plenty of characters getting lost along the way. For a Christmas episode, “Voyage of the Damned” has a surprisingly high body count, and the Doctor emerges from it all decidedly saddened. But hopeful.

3. “The Runaway Bride” (2006)

Believe it or not, when Catherine Tate first popped up at the end of ��Doomsday,” right after the touching farewell between the Doctor and Rose, some fans were furious. How DARE this annoying comedian lady ruin Doctor Who?! (You may have noticed, if you’ve been in the fandom for long enough, that every new thing ruins Doctor Who.)

Well, “The Runaway Bride” made those fans shut up. Tate’s Donna Noble was an amazing character and a breath of fresh air. The sibling-like relationship between her and the Doctor was fantastic … and it survives to the present day.

1. The Christmas Invasion (2005)

The first Doctor Who Christmas Special is still the best. In “The Christmas Invasion,” the Doctor has just regenerated from Christopher Eccleston’s Nine into David Tennant’s 10, but he’s suffering from the aftereffects and out of action … juuuuust as Earth gets invaded.

This was everybody’s introduction to David Tennant as the Doctor and WHAT an impact he made. Christmas Day television was never the same again.'
