✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨
Whispers of the Deep by Emma Hamm 🧜‍♂️
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Synopsis: One of the many engineers that keeps Beta, the city under the sea, running, Mira only wants to make her family proud and to prove herself worthy. She knows the mysterious city better than anyone and it’s her dream to help it flourish.
But then, on a solo job in an abandoned section of the city, she encounters a monster of legend. An undine. A dangerous merman from an ancient civilization, long forgotten.
Arges has fought his entire life for his people. With deadly creatures under his control, he plans to eradicate Beta once and for all to protect his kind and their peaceful way of life. But when a human woman saves him, she unknowingly creates a bond between them, one he can’t ignore. Even though her flaming red hair haunts his dreams, he needs her for information on the undine’s enemies.
So he steals her. Keeps her. Feeds her. Only to realize their bond is far deeper than captor and captive. He cannot let her go—but he cannot keep her under the sea. In a battle to determine if love can survive a war beneath the waves, it will be their decision that changes the tides.
Review: Human x Merman???? SIGN ME UP! 🌟 This book had me by the throat! This romance was top-tier!
The “I want to hate you, but I can’t have you” pining was everything to me! Also, the trope of “being unable to communicate/learning to communicate with each other” is like a drug to me. Something about them both just spewing their guts out to each other, thinking that the other can’t understand them just gets me! I was eating it up! Also a man in charge that would kill for you? Sign me up. The humor was also amazingly unexpected in this book, and so many times, I was laughing out loud. 💕

Before diving into this book, I saw some criticism about realism and plothole issues. I was wondering how it would pan out since the story would be taking place underwater, and there would be some nasty time with a merman, but whether the book was realistic or not did not affect my reading. I was having a great ol’ time, regardless.
Do you think I’m wondering how her breathing device is working underwater when she’s doing the nasty with the fishman? ❌ NO! I’m thinking about the nasty and where her leg is! Do you think I noticed that plothole I just read over? ❌ Noooooo! I was focused on the fact that they’re holding hands! I honestly don’t think issues with realism and/or plotholes are going to take away from your experience reading this book. I was here for a good time, not a scholarly time.
Ugh! …. Just pick up this book for a good fun time! 📖

Book Blurb:
When a demon thinks he has everything, one women will prove that he is wrong...
Envy has stolen every single power in his kingdom. Through magic, he devours all those with magic, stealing it for himself. But the one power he has never managed to steal is the one that can see his future. So when an oracle appears in his kingdom, he knows he has to steal her for himself.
Lilith has grown up in a circus. Traveling throughout all of the kingdoms, she has seen much and predicted even more prophecies than ever before. Until a certain demon king waltzes into one of her performances, and all she can see is darkness in his future. There is no future in him, just as she cannot see a future in herself.
Stealing her is easy. But keeping her alive? That's much harder.
The Demon King will stop at nothing to keep her for himself. When he cannot bring himself to steal her power, he decides that she will be his and his alone. But her old master has other plans. An insidious plot runs throughout the kingdom. Not just to overthrow the demon king, but to remove the threat from its source. Her.
He has more magic at his fingertips than any other creature to ever exist. And Envy will use every single spell he knows to keep her safe.
Book 4 in the Seven Deadly Demons series disappears underground into the depths of Envy's kingdom....
Review:
He's the demon King known as Envy and he'll do anything to get what he wants especially when it comes to stealing more magic for himself... so when he discovers a powerful oracle with the power to see the future, an ability he has yet to steal... he plans on stealing her for himself... little does he realize that she might have stolen his heart as well. Envy is one of the Seven Deadly Demons, having stolen every single power in his kingdom and collecting and devouring more magic for himself. The one power he has yet to obtain however is the ability to see his future... and oracles are a rarity... yet when he gets news that an oracle has appeared in his kingdom he'll do anything to steal her powers. However when he finds her being mistreated and abused... he suddenly wants to protect her and keep her all for himself... and the more he wants her the more he doesn't even seem to consider taking her powers but keeping her all for himself. Yet the circus he's stolen her from is determined to get her back... even if it means hunting her down and killing her. Envy will have to see if he has the ability to save her while also discovering that despite stealing her for himself, she's the one who has stolen his heart. This is the fourth book in a series, though you can read it as a standalone. Oh how I absolutely devoured this book. I've been a huge fan of Emma Hamm's writing and this series has been such a fun one to read. Envy and Lilith were a great couple. I loved how Envy fell so hard for Lilith without even realizing it himself and I loved that Lilith had her own strength and wouldn't let anyone control her fate. The romance was really well done in this and the story was such a fun one. The world itself is a really interesting one and the magic is unique. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this series and book to any fantasy romance lovers out there!

Hi I saw your fairytale retelling recommendation list and I wanted to ask if you have recommendations for beauty and the beast retellings in particular? Thank you in advance!
Thank you for the ask! I saw your other ask clarifying that you were specifically looking for Fae Beauty and the Beast retellings. I do have a couple that I've read that I can suggest.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
Curse of the Wolf King by Tessonja Odette
A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova
Heart of the Fae by Emma Hamm
An Enchantment of Thorns by Helena Rookwood
I know you weren't asking about nonFae Beauty and the Beast retellings, but here are a couple suggestions anyway because I like them a lot:
Hunted by Meagan Spooner
A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
I hope you find a good read or two out of these suggestions! Let me know!
Also if anyone has any other suggestions, feel free to reblog and add!

The funniest thing about Marvel backtracking on the Jean/Scott/Logan throuple on the moon idea is that if we actually accept what they're saying, it actually makes everything SO MUCH WEIRDER.
Okay, so let's accept the premise that our three protagonists have in fact not all started knocking boots. Or rather, it's exactly as we explicitly see: Jean and Scott are banging. Jean and Logan are banging. Scott and Emma are theoretically banging. Jean has a Hall Pass for Jon Hamm. But it's all exclusively MF pairings here. Never shall the penii touch.
Fine, let's go with that.
Then what the fuck was going on with the Summer House?!
Tumblr media
Because Scott built that shit. We all know that. He might not have literally assembled it, but it was clearly his design. It's all perfectly geometric with nine bedrooms, arranged in groups of three. There are rooms for Scott's children, his brothers, and a few guest rooms presumably for the kids, half-brothers and parents who are currently hanging out in alternate dimensions or space. It screams Scott Summers all the way through.
So Scott's built rooms for his kids, his brothers, himself, his wife, and the man that his wife is fucking.
Not his OWN polyamorous partner. Oh no. Just HERS. In a room adjoined to hers, just like Scott's own is, WITH NO DOORS IN BETWEEN.
Every other room is clearly separate. And this isn't a case of a blueprint leaving off the doors, because we can see what are clearly doors that go between each bedroom and the hallway.
So if they are not fucking, all three of them, then WHAT IS THIS?
Is Scott simply the most accommodating man in the world? Do doors disrupt Jean's feng shui? Does he just have a really powerful cuckold fetish?
So there may not be sex going on here, but there is definitely SOME kind of relationship that extends through all three characters.
And honestly, speaking as a friendly neighborhood aroace who insists that not every relationship NEEDS sex, I still think that if you're removing sex out of this particular equation, IT'S PRETTY FUCKING WEIRD. We generally have DOORS.

My Rating
5 Stars!
Why do I like it so much?
This is actually my favorite book series! It was the third monster lover book I had picked up. Compared to the others, it dialed back on the “spice” and it focused heavily on the characters, their differences, the stories before each other, and both sides of the coin are developed in a very intricate way! You can tell the author has put her heart and soul into her works. For a good portion of the book, Arges and Mira couldn’t even speak to each other. Yet, even with the communication barrier.. All of their interactions were interesting! I’ve never finished a book so fast in my life.
Not only this, but the book itself is made beautifully. The author is against AI artwork (as far as I’m aware) and all of the artwork within her books are commissioned from other artists! From the covers, to the inner cover, and every chapter page has a sketch of the pairing involved with beautiful decor. Her books are pretty to look at and the stories are so interesting that it doesn’t take away from the focus!
I also really enjoyed the technology of the setting Mira came from. She is from an underwater city called “Beta” and there are other underwater cities we will and have seen in other books so far! The way the author describes each setting is utterly captivating. Not to mention, our protagonist is accompanied by a little robot programmed with its own emotions! It’s magnificently written and charming!
I also really like the detail of the species of merman themselves. The merfolk call themselves “People of Water” while the humans call them Undines. The merfolk also call humans “Achromos”. This was another detail I very much enjoyed!

What about the Other Book(s)?
All I can say about this is that the 2nd book is just as good, if not even better than the first! If you enjoy Whispers of the Deep.. You will enjoy Song of the Abyss!
Not only this.. but the 3rd book will be available in November of 2024!
There may or may not be a 4th book planned as well if I’m remembering correctly!

I’m about 20% into this book and I love these two already 😂 It’s an enemies to lovers, and for context, the merman guy just kidnapped the human woman to try to gain information for his own people (who are trying to get the humans out of their damn ocean).
They can’t understand a single word they’re saying to each other so it’s a disaster.
