Turn it over to Crash Test Dummies, set it to a country-gospel arrangement with steel guitar, piano and organ and hand Ellen Reid the mic.

That’s how.

Fans expecting Brad Roberts’ bass vocals over a dirge-like melody will be surprised by this uplifting, not sappy, rendering. It previews the forthcoming (Nov. 24) streaming debut of the Dummies’ 2002 Jingle All the Way holiday album.

Album Review: Crash Test Dummies - Jingle all the Way

Ellen Reid is the savior of Crash Test Dummies’ Christmas music.

Released in 2002 and getting the streaming treatment - the musical equivalent of a book’s arrival in paperback - in ’23, Jingle all the Way finds Reid helming peaceful, country-leaning holiday songs that contrast with Brad Roberts’ comical-but-not-funny counterparts.

So where Reid creates pastoral - and fresh-sounding - versions of such songs as “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “Silent Night,” Roberts and his baritone go the bombastic route on “White Christmas” and “Jingle Bells.”

The contrasting approaches might’ve worked if Reid and Roberts’ spotlights had been grouped together. But the alternating sequence used on Jingle all the Way makes for a choppy holiday listen that requires ample use of the skip button.

Reid’s songs are prime pickin’s for a hip holiday playlist, however.
