finished re-reading the jewel arc & I have thoughts...

The plot is about Ranma making Shampoo "say she loves him," yet the climax says his heart is unwaveringly Akane's. Ahampoo shows interest? He pulls away. Akane's "interest" is way more intense, yet he pulls closer

Notably, all the fiancées tell Ranma they love him in this arc, but only Akane's declaration gets to him. It reminds him that love is supposed to be something you feel and not a mindless challenge to win

These two panels being only a couple of pages apart really spell things out. Look at Ranma being put off by just a "hot stare" vs instantly leaning in and ~staring~ at Akane after an intense love confession. Atrociously down bad.

Similar to Tsubasa calling him ugly, Shampoo's rejection is framed as an attack, not just on his ego, but on his self-worth (this time also tied to public judgment). He reacts to both as if it were a challenge, his fighting aura visible... but the differences are interesting

The challenge against Tsubasa is clearly about looks, but with Shampoo at its core is more about likability. She doesn't attack his looks, she says he's a scum (and so should be hated). Even if he's like "am I no longer irresistible?" he's focusing on love, not attraction

When he's looking for validation with Ukyo, he doesn't ask "am I attractive to you?" (which is what you would associate with "being irresistible") but "do you love me?" (am I the type of guy girls fall in love with? ... that's what he connects with "irresistible")

Much to say about Ranma being emotionally stunted but this is the kind of stuff showing that at his core, he's a soft, romantic guy, jerk-ness notwithstanding. Classmates might say it's about desire (because THEY're horny lol) but he never goes there. Freaks out at the suggestion even

You can see the contrast with the classmates from the beginning (horny talk) while Ranma is focused on Akane's smile... his fantasies with girls are always something romantic with Akane, and it's hundreds of chapters before his interest in seeing Akane naked is brought up.

Ranma's personal space is invaded with frequency, which affects him, but all interest for him is tied to romance. There's a certain distance in challenges and playing characters, but I don't think he's comfortable with being desired from up close... unless he's in love (Akane)

And even then it's difficult for him. You can see how much he's about romance when he does not react at all to Shampoo's bridal fit (the cutest she has ever looked mind you... and yet) and with Akane just the sigh gets a big reaction

I think it makes sense to be a soft romantic at heart and struggle with being disliked. Wanting space from someone who annoys you doesn't mean you want/can take actual hostility from them. Being "dumped" is also a form of "losing" and Ranma must win absolutely everything.

Every step of the way he frames this as a challenge, a matter of reputation, armor, strategy, etc... without ever processing there are real, actual feelings at play (love is a battle, a simple challenge, instead of.... you know, love... he's not associating any of it with feelings! ... until Akane "confesses"). Other characters misjudge him for the bit, but Kasumi/Nabiki as a duo usually get it right

Akane can get angry because of misunderstandings/insecurities, but sometimes she's angry because she's being more perceptive and mature than Ranma and simply sees he's being an insensitive dumbass. (Ranma telling her not to be jealous also indicates he's not processing/seeing this as wanting someone else)

Sidenotes: it hits me that Shampoo is really a cat lol only truly dangerous when she feels (emotionally) cornered but otherwise she's just fucking around. “She hates me fr” says the melodramatic guy whose examples of "cold" and "hatred" are juvenile annoyance

Shampoo's abilities are plot devices more than anything else. If you take it seriously the speed with which Ranma defeats her is frankly disrespectful lol only the boys get Serious Fights. The tone with the female fighters is just different, no point in fixating on abilities or the like with them

(says something interesting about sexism in-world though. Cologne ya girl is getting washed, stand up! alas, she's only interested in future husband as she's ensured Shampoo's survival in her village. Could speculate the same happens to Akane, where she's trained just enough to be able to defend herself in her peaceful world, but then is left alone as the future of the dojo is expected to fall in the hands of a strong husband) (Mostly is the shonen of it all, as we're expected to believe none of the female martial artists have a sustained interest in improving/becoming stronger like the boys have. I suspend my belief here because there's still plenty to like about these characters, how the female fighters can be used, and because it's funny. What can I say. A bitch is being entertained)

Ranma 1/2 Thoughts, Meta Edition

I have consumed...a lot of Ranma 1/2 content.

I mean, this is kinda what happens when you're a repressed transgirl who discovers the manga a year into a marriage that you got into to "fix" being trans and be "a real boy" in a desperate bid to fill the hole that you wouldn't learn for two decades could only be filled by living as your true self.

I've encountered precisely four (4) types of Ranma 1/2 fans in that time:

Transwomen who see Ranma as their idealized expression of the gender experience ("I'm not like this because I want to be, it's a curse. A curse that gives me a smokin' hot body and HUGE tits! But it's tooootally a curse, for realsies! I'll find a cure any day now, see how hard I'm looking? I'm trying sooooo hard to find a cure...")

Transmen who see Ranma as their perfect representation of their gender experience ("I'm a guy, damnit! This body...it's a curse! I hate it and I want nothing better than to be cured, but all sorts of Life Bullshit keeps getting in the way!")

Lesbians who kin either Ranma (butch NB lesbian) or one of their love interests (Akane - comphet closetted butch lesbian, Shampoo - Strong, smokin' hot bad bitch who goes after what she wants, Ukyo - transmasc coded genderfluid NB)

Completely clueless nimrods who miss the FUCKING POINT and are only into the show for the martial arts and think it would be better if Ranma got cured and they stopped having funny stuff happen.

(In case it's not obvious, IMHO the last group are the worst parts of the fandom and need to Go Away. Most of the toxic stuff that exists in R.5 fanspaces is because of this group of assholes which includes the incels that think everything would be better if Ranma just did stuff that's questionable from an ethics and morality perspective and chased after Shampoo because she's the closest thing to a Barbie-doll these closet fascists can allow themselves to fantasize about playing with, completely ignoring that she's a complex character that's a subversive pastiche to the Japanese racist stereotypes of the 1980s.)

I'm not kidding when I say that in the early days of the public Internet (before Facebook and Twitter ruined it for everyone), Ranma 1/2 was the SINGLE largest fandom by a MASSIVE stretch. I once checked my math on this by going to Fanfiction.net (before the massive purges) and brought up the Big List of All Fandoms and right there at the top with a MASSIVE number of fics was Ranma 1/2 by a HUGE margin. It took three fandoms (Star Trek, Doctor Who, and I believe Naruto if I'm recalling correctly) to have their combined total number of fics exceed the number of R.5 fics on FF.net...and that was JUST FF.net. There was an entire separate index (The Penultimate Ranma 1/2 Fanfic Index) that had the single task of listing, not even curating or reading or reviewing, ONLY Ranma 1/2 fanfics. Not fanart, not commentary, no RP blogs or chat transcripts or whatever, JUST fanfics. And only about half of those linked to FF.net, meaning that if you dig up the archives you'll find at least 60% of all fanfics that people had managed to index in the Ranma 1/2 fandom are missing because they were never properly archived and just...faded from the Internet as the public servers and places like Geocities started disappearing. You can find teasing, tantalizing hints of larger works that all we have left, like scraps of ancient papyri revealing a quote from a missing book of the Bible, are single chapters backed up on niche sites that managed to get spider-crawled by Archive.org, but many great works are just...lost. (There's an ero fic called "Playing with Water" that was SUPER hot and featured elements that we have tags for on porn sites but didn't really have proper words for back in the day...but even back when it was first being written finding the thing was hard...and today? Nearly impossible.)

For me, Ranma will always be the transfemme coded genderfluid hero that we needed in the late 80s and early 90s. We were on the tail end of the AIDS pandemic, and just like COVID-19 there were a bunch of assholes who used it to ride to power and marginalize queer folk. It was easier to do with AIDS, of course, given the absolutely massive numbers of queer cis men and transwomen who contracted it and died. (Sidebar: the reason "L" comes first in "LGBTQIA+" is because it was the Lesbian nurses who were the caretakers of the Gay men who were dying in numbers large enough to be counted as a tragic statistic instead of a mere tragedy) and while the world was starting to acknowledge (again) that gay men was a thing that existed and they weren't actually trying to corrupt the youth, what we now call "transgender" was still listed in the DSM as a mental disorder that required treatment to "cure." According to the cultural majority in damn near every field you can imagine, the Gender Binary was the only way to exist and if you didn't fit neatly into one or the other then you were Damaged™ and had to be Fixed™ for The Good of All People™ (but specifically so cis-het-white folks, usually men, could feel comfy and not be confronted by things that made them feel icky and might have cooties). It's a truism that's treated as a joke that transwomen get into coding and wind up doing IT work in such massive numbers that between us and the furries we ARE the foundation of the modern Internet. And into the fanspaces packed to the brim with closetted AMAB transwomen who hadn't yet had their egg cracked came this plucky martial artist that gets to swap their gender with a splash of water but somehow still winds up the best of the best, the finest martial artist of their generation. (Goku can suck it, Ranma would turn the Kamea-meha right back on the over-muscled, braindead loser with a food fetish and still make it home in time for Kasumi's dinner)

I'm no sociologist, anthropologist, behaviorist, whatever, but I suspect that the reason Ranma Saotome spawned such a large fanbase so early in the modern Internet's history was specifically because the series created a safe space where people could talk about gender issues with a degree of separation that helped strip away the stigma surrounding feeling like you were in the wrong body.

I get why people like the martial arts aspect. I mean, Ranma kills a demigod. This is NOT something to sneeze at. I also understand the transmen who latch onto Ranma as a kin because I get the feeling like you have no control over what your body's doing and you're going through your days in existential dread of what might be dragging you further and further away from what you always knew was right and correct about yourself. It's a terrifying thing and here's someone who (esp. the anime version) IS a guy trapped in a girl's body.

For me, though, and for a LOT of transwomen out there, Ranma is transfemme. And, yes, canonically Ranma states right near the end of the manga that they're both and they kinda forgot about the 'cure' when they had to pick between that and the really important stuff and that they're okay with being fluid ('cause water, gettit?!) about their gender and it's a damn shame this was the 80s 'cause a continuation might wind up showing Ranma embracing being both...

BUT, and this is a transfemme thing, I know, if you continue the parabolic arc of Ranma's character development, the logical conclusion (for us) is that she eventually decides that she's a woman and just lives in her "cursed" form the majority (or all) of the time.

And yes, this is because that's the transfemme story arc. In the manga in some distant part of the multiverse that peers into our universe and for some reason decides to make me the MC (god, that must be a FUCKING BORING manga by our standards, I weep for those fans), my story arc is the gradual progression of uncracked, closetted transgirl to transitioned out and proud transbien mom. At one point I swapped back and forth between gender presentations because it was safer for me to appear in some spaces as the male that they thought I was. Now I would prefer to die before being forced to go back to pretending to be a man again.

Ranma has the choice, and good for them. Until the Kaisufuu is permanently destroyed, even if the "curse" is locked, they have the option of going one way or the other based solely on their own, personal desire. I can't say I'd be comfortable with that option being available. In that theoretical manga where there's a reboot that gives me a condition like Ranma's, I'd probably wind up destroying the equivalent to the Kaisufuu just because of the threat to my mental wellbeing it presents.

So it's not a stretch to imagine Ranma making the same choice. She's a woman now, she has the life she never realized she wanted because she never had the choice so didn't know she was allowed to imagine it, but now she's happier than ever and why would she ever go back to that struggle of being a guy that only ever brought her pain and challenges and heartache?

I feel the need to yap about how much I fucking hate the new age of anime.

We used to get amazing plot lines and stories from authors who gave a fuck about their animes and actually put thought and time into making complex story webs that all come together and make sense at the end.

There was a time where we got anime's that had themes that made you sit and think, the type of shit that you have to sit and dwell on and it shapes your philosophy.

Philosophy is such a big part of anime, and maybe I'm biased because thats the field that I'm most interested in but you cannot tell me that Philisophy and good anime don't go hand in hand.

The time of good anime is over and I hate that, while there are some amazing modern anime's they just aren't as popular and get none of the recognition that they deserve.

Instead, we're getting the shitty isekais like "i got reincarnated as a.." and then its a old ass man in the body of a 14 year old surrounded by a harem of idiot airheaded girls who's only seperation and individuality is being "the big boobed one" or the one with the fat ass or the angry one.

Why are those animes getting the most popular you ask? The answer is quite simple. It's the 'people' you know and hate, the ones that ruined society, the one

Men are the ones creating these dumbass animes for men. Men are also the ones assuming that women would only like to watch a romance anime, and while i can appreciate a good shojo, that's not the only thing I want to see. Fullmetal Alchemist is actually brilliant and I'll never stop praising it as one of if not the only shonen that hasn't a drop of fan service and gets straight to the point. Not a single weird ass beach episode where the female love interest has to wear a stupidly revealing bikini, no filler, and most importantly its written by a WOMAN!

Oh! Oh! I have an idea, what if we left deciding what women want to see to the actual fucking women. Men really just sat up in the writing studio and said, "For us, let's make an epic ass anime. I'm talking naruto, bleach, fairy tail!"

"What about the girls?"

"Oh.. them. Uh.. give em highschool boys or somethin'."

I fucking love certain romance animes, *cough* the ones that are written by women *cough* but that doesn't mean I don't ADORE a good shonen.

Bleach and Fairytail are my personal favorite shonens but the turn off was all the fan service, I can't even watch it around anyone because as soon as they walk in its like one of the girls is smothering a dude in her tits. I wanted to show my little brothers fairy tail like my sister did me but I had to turn it off quick as hell. Same goes for Bleach, the story line is amazing and Rukia made me think "oh hey, maybe it wont be so much fan service" then we got Orihime. And I'm gonna make a seperate post for how much I hate how women are depicted in anime. DONT GET ME FUCKING STARTED ON SEVEN DEADLY SINS EITHER-

The bottom line is, the anime's that are written by women might not be the most popular, but they're usually the best animes out there in their respective genres. Fullmetal Alchemist, Fruit's Basket, Ranma 1/2, and Kamisama Kiss are all examples of how amazing female writing has shaped the world of shojo and how good female writing is compared to shows written by men.

Also anime has so much misogyny ingrained into it its insane. The whole "traditional woman" thing probably either stems from or is fueled by the fact that in almost every major shonen, the male mc ends up with an airheaded woman with little to no personality. The girl's personality is just being the love interest of the mc. "I.. believe in you!" and thats it, no development, not jack shit.

Also women's taste in anime is better than men's, I rest my case. And this is all me generalizing things down to the statistics of men and women. If you're a guy and you don't think like this then that's actually amazing for you but that just means I'm not talking about you. On the other hand if you are a consumer of one of the weird shitty harem animes then I'm wishing nothing but the worst on you!

Kodachi is manipulative so I thought maybe a psychic pokemon would fit her!

Flying types because she's an acrobat and a gymnastic girl so she has to do many stunts in air.

Dark... Thought it fit her. No idea why, probably just vibes.

Grass type ( I wrote it as plant 😔) because of her connection to roses!

Fighting, because he likes to fight lol

Flying because the dude is always getting punched into the sky and things similar to that, also his connection to the Phoenix bird.

The next Pokémons were chosen bc: Thought it fit his vibe, slowpoke because he's a moron, sword Pokémon because I thought that having a cursed sword is very Kuno like. Somehow he wouldn't get killed by it though (maybe because he's too dumb)

Ryoga Hibiki:

First Pokémon because pig + fire, and I think Ryoga is very passionate and also his curse.

Geodude because of a comment that made me laugh in last post.

Machoke because... thought I'd fit him.

Rock type because he breaks rocks, that's it lol

Shampoo:

Almost full kitty team because of her curse. I didn't pay too much attention to the types although I did not completely overlook them.

Purrloin seemed like a good fit, and the description of the pokemon being mischievous but tricking people because of how cute they are make sense for Shampoo.

Sylveon seemed like a good fit, somehow I felt Fairy type would be cute on shampoo.

Skitty is very cute, and Shampoo is too.

Gardevoir, I thought for her plans and schemes it would fit a Pokémon who would be there for her no matter what.

Picked the version which is poison fighting because I wanted Shampoo to have at least one fighting type Pokémon because of her being an Amazon. Poison also seems to fit her too.

Normal Fight, I thought the Pokémon fit her because of the charming nature.

RANMA REWATCH: EPISODE TWENTY-EIGHT

jfc if soun and genma are so fucking concerned with linking the tendo and saotome families to ensure the future of the dojo then why don't they just marry each other already, they're both clearly into each other, the stupid idiots

so shampoo's got some magic powder that can stop ranma from ever turning girl-mode again. she's willing to give it to her, but only on one condition: she has to go on a date with her. bish bosh, right? easy! all she has to do is pretend to be a heterosexual boy for a couple hours and she never has to be girl-mode agai-- oh, wait no. she immediately tried to steal it instead.

also yknow i never really considered it but shampoo, mousse, and cologne are all from china but only shampoo speaks broken english (or, japanese i guess)

there's so many fucking layers to ranma being so fucked up about kissing shampoo to get the girl-be-gone powder. fucked up about intimacy from her incredibly abusive childhood. fucked up about the cure because she only gets to have fun that isn't fighting-related when she's a girl. okay there's two layers but still

nabiki turns ranma back guy-type so she can fight because "you're no good to us as a girl" so way to reinforce gender roles, damn. especially when akane, a girl, is also in the same fight.

i get that this show has very little respect for akane as a martial artist and a woman but damn.

anyway that one line from nabiki is such a summary of ranma's (the show and the girl) struggle with gender roles. men are for fighting, women are for feelings. women who fight are failures as women. men with feelings are failures as men.

i love that the premise of akane’s and ranma’s engagement was that since akane’s sisters knows she’s saying she hates men all the time then ranma is perfect for her bc he’s not completely a man

LITERALLYYYY the unspoken line is “but you DO like girls” and I will die on that hill 😭 I’m not gonna chase down screenshots bc that’d take a while and it’d make this reply super long but. For ur consideration:

- kasumi telling young akane that she needs to start being more feminine because “I feel like I have a boy for a sister” which rlly feels like the underlying message is “ur getting older and ppl are gonna start talking / think ur gay”

- akane being clearly excited abt and interested in ranma before she knew abt his curse

- the part u just described

- akane venting to nabiki in her room bc she’s afraid ppl will think she’s a “pervert” for being engaged to ranma

- she’s clearly way more comfortable hanging out w him when they’re both girls and also gets more flustered w that form in season 1

- shampoo accusing her of “chasing girl-type ranma too” which makes akane flustered and mad

- when ranma’s locked as a girl in the phoenix pill arc nabiki tries to cheer him up by saying “akane doesn’t mind at all!” and she tells her stop it

- also nabiki later telling him he doesn’t need to cure his curse bc “it’ll make ur married life much more interesting, right akane? 😏” which makes akane blush lmao

- ranma not being sure abt curing himself when shampoo brings him an instant nannichuan packet in one of the millions of eps where that’s a recycled plot device and she says it’s okay and “you’re still ranma no matter what you turn into” and starts to confess before shampoo barges in

- i AM using this screenshot bc I have it on hand and I love how it’s such a 180° from where she started the series and rlly shows how she’s grown to accept her own feelings

My warped understanding of random anime series I've never watched:

Jujutsu Kaisen: some teenager/young adult eats mummified fingers for power and has to fight other people for the remaining nineteen that somehow still exist.

Kill la Kill: Clothing is made of blood and highschoolers are wearing it because the MC's mother wants them to be fashionable warriors of death.

PsychoPass 3: ... since when was there a 2?! Surely the Sybil System has been taken down by now? Right??? Oh god please let the Sybil System be dead and the third series be about rebuilding Japan in the aftermath.

Aggretsuko: A sweet little red panda girl works in an office and snaps. Probably a slice of life comedy though so she likely straddles the line between sweet and overstressed.

Scarlet Nexus: Post-Apoc Japanese City barely hangs on to a semblance of normalcy when mind-demons emerge into the world and have to be executed by children/teenagers because... uh... reasons involving the psyche magitek.

Digimon Ghost Game: Remember that one scene from Serial Experiments Lain where elementary/pre-school kids playing hide-and-seek get their VRMMO server mixed up into a young adults' horror-fps? That but its Digimon.

Chainsaw Man: Random Man sells his soul and fuses with a magical dog to become a ultragore killer of other devil-men.

Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun: I'm like... 30% sure there was a shoujo version of this about ten years back where a girl got yeeted into a magical world academy where actual Solomon Demons taught. Except I think the demons there knew she was human. I think Iruma is mistaken for an uber-powerful demon scion because comedy reasons, but whether Iruma is aware of the misunderstandings or not I don't got a clue.

Bungo Stray Dogs: Italian Mafia in Japan has magical powers. ... wait I thought that was Katekyou Hitman Reborn. Then Bungo is... the one where a orphan gets treated like garbage only to be rescued by an Anime Pretty Boy and wind up living on a romance novel plot?

Bonus Round: DNAngel. Why bonus? Because I thought it died years ago.

I never saw another volume in the book store after 1. Basically it's a magical girl anime plot (think Sailor Moon but without the Warrior aspect) but as a Magical Thief who heals the cursed items before letting them be found again. The MC is a boy with a magical alternate personality and the girl he has a crush on as himself hates him while her sister has a crush on his normal identity, and the girl he has a crush on has a crush on his magical identity. I have no idea how the plot progressed with the magical mystery items but I know deep in my heart that the MC would have to fight himself over which girl to woo and which girl he'd wind up with in the end. Assuming it's not a Ranma 1/2 type thing where while he does go with one and seem to find joy together, the best choice would've been to walk away because everything else still messes with their lives.

Ranma type au where there are some springs in the Encanto that not everyone is aware of because they were in the area before the Encanto's mountains formed. There's several of them and they're cursed springs. If you fall in you turn into the last thing that drowned in that spring.

Mirabel was exploring the area alone when she was 7 because everyone was too busy for her so she left to play/explore since previously she'd never left the inner part of the village.

She found the springs and while leaning into one fell in. She managed to get out but didn't realize that she had changed form. She turned into a boy because the last thing that drowned in the pool had been a young boy.

Shes still herself just her hair had gotten shorter and her face was more similar to what her Abuelo's had looked like when he was a kid.

After that incident she learned that when she had warm or hot water on her, she would turn back to normal but any time she got wet, like if Pepa rained on her, she'd turn into a boy again.

Everything was fine and dandy until she got into her teens and she turned into her male form in front of the family.

Alma passed out because she looked so much like Pedro she almost thought he'd come back

I haven’t watched that yet, I’ve only seen clips but???? From what I’ve seen, it’s very funny tbh. Anyway, very cool concept⁉️⁉️ love to see Alma damping near having a heart attack. Only to realize it Mirabel. And imagine if she water spilled on her and Alma ended up seeing Casita fall on her. Tragic <\3
