The Obscure Hidden Yaoi of Ranma 1/2
CW: Mention of Suicide, Period-Typical Transphobic and Homophobic reactions
There's a scene in the manga where Gosunkugi crossdresses to get Ranma's attention(this isn't the first time btw) and sabotage his role in the Romeo & Juliet play.
Tumblr media
When he rejects the bomb, they parody a love rejection scene.
Tumblr media
Whenever one of Ranma's rivals catches him with a girl that's not Akane/Shampoo, they normally celebrate it and even root for him since he won't be "getting in their way" anymore.
Tumblr media
But Gosunkugi gets weirdly jilted about it, heart pumping sound effects and all.
Tumblr media
In chapter 200 Gosunkugi gets a set of paper dolls that can control people when given commands. Though accidental, he only puts romantic commands on men.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In particular, Ranma and Gosunkugi's date gets a lot of spotlight, lasting 2 pages out of a 16 page chapter, culminating in this exchange.
Tumblr media
After this happened Ranma starts blushing when Gosunkugi walks by and asks what his intentions were earlier.
Tumblr media
The next Gosunkugisode is about him reconsidering his thoughts on Ranma since he saved him from bullies, but this gets rebuffed by Gosunkugi buying a mecha armor to defeat him. His crush on Akane gets mentioned less and less.
Tumblr media
If the armor doesn't punch the desired target in 30 minutes both the wearer and the target will explode. By the end of the chapter, Ranma has a speech about pride and fighting Gosunkugi fairly. The only part of it that he notices is "man to man".
Tumblr media
After this Gosunkugi tearfully swoons over Ranma acknowledging him, describing his current situation as a lovers' suicide and apologizing for not wanting to do it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The chapter ends with Gosunkugi not being able to finish a sentence directed to Ranma with similar wording to the earlier scene about him being accepted.
Tumblr media
Even though he sits directly behind Ranma, this is the last time Gosunkugi ever ambushes him. Even though he sits next to Akane, he never shows any reaction to her anymore and seems to be looking at someone else instead. He only uses his straw dolls to fidget with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last line Gosunkugi ever has in the manga has him sweating heavily with his heart beating fast after finding a supposed wedding ring that Ranma had buried in the ground(with Ranma blushing in the back for good measure).
Tumblr media
This was just an excuse to list the fruitiest moments these two had.
As a bonus, here's a minor detail that I noticed. Whenever Ranma's rivals want to insult him, they all go "Yurusan!(Unforgivable!)" or "Onore!!(You!!)".
Tumblr media
But Gosunkugi instead repeatedly says "Saotome no Baka!!(Stupid Saotome!!)" just like his suitors do.

I have talked about Akane's insecurities with femininity before, but I want to add another element now: maturity. Her crush on the doc informs a lot of her behavior in the manga. (We all know about the hair = expectations of femininity so I'll skip that)
Tumblr media
Part of what embarrasses Akane here (and part of why Ranma is good for her) isn't just that she's acting in a way that's not considered "feminine" in front of the doc... but that she's acting like a kid.
She's responding to Ranma's energy (who begs for her attention like a kid)
Tumblr media
That's part of why the suitors are never real threats to Akane, not even in terms of "self-worth." Stuff like bust size comparisons and cooking contests are kept between her and Ranma (childishly!) the other girls are not ever meant to be used for beauty contests or related.
Tumblr media
The girls bother Akane by being homewreckers and invaders (seen in Ukyo trying to run the show or briefly moving into Ranma's room and Shampoo literally wrecking the house or jumping ranma when he's washing his ass) (outside of Kasumi, she has no model of ideal femininity. Shampoo and Ukyo donā€™t have those roles for her. struggles against them are about behavior, control, powerā€¦ not beauty or femininity contests)
She gets jealous, but what really gets to Akane with the other girls is that they might have control over her relationship with Ranma (is he going along with Shampoo's antics? Is Ukyo a closer friend? Can she have a say in our engagement?) (these girls get to Akane's pride and competitive side, but serious shit about image and fears of losing love is kept between Akane and her SISTERS, and Akane and Ranmaā€¦ itā€™s kept within her home)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Lucky you, she's a cute girl!" is Akane being a clown about her jealousy, comparable to Ranma's "you must be having fun on your little date" even though they both know the other people are nothing but trouble. They're being CHILDISH, it turns off their brains
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When she gets competitive with the other girls is always very childish (which, again, is part of making it unserious) "he's mine, let go of him" type of shit
(this is part of framing Ranma's popularity in the manga as undesirable btw, besides him obviously not having a good time: that it doesn't use them to TRULY unsettle Akane in terms of self-image) (the old anime tends to do the opposite)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've mentioned that real fears about losing love are kept between her and her sisters (who are often the ones putting fears into Akane's head...) and I think part of it is that they're OLDER than her. Akane is seriously (and not "childishly") affected only when Nabiki "confesses"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the thing about growing out a pixie cut: it takes a long fucking time. Kasumi is Akane's model of femininity not just in the present, but in terms of who she is supposed TO BECOME as she grows up. In this context, even love implies a future (becoming a wife)
Tumblr media
(growing hair = growing up... I didn't even think about it like this when I started this but growth implies the passage of time. To be "more like a lady" and less tomboy also implies "to mature." Girls are expected to mature faster than boys)
This is what unsettles Akane with Hinako the most, even though she doesn't see her as "a real threat" like the other girls do. Hinako is "more mature"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see Akane "reacting childishly" but hurt in a very SERIOUS way whenever she feels like she's being compared to "an older woman" and "is coming up short" (it's not spelled out like that with Nabiki, but being the baby sister is part of why Nabiki is fucking with her in that arc)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is part of why Akane is so sensitive in the bust arc (where Ranma unknowingly picks on her insecurities when he teases her because he doesn't get why she's lashing out and to downplay his attraction) her body is developing so she's *feeling* more mature
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Growing up" is a big theme here: childish behavior (familiar ground) conflated with grown-up attraction (ranma) and a wish to be feel more mature (and desirable for Akane, but specifically for the person she's in love with)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nodoka is a big source of stress for Ranma but she provides the validation Akane doesn't get from the older women in her family (who mean well and will be on her side always but they can also just be.. clueless jerks lol you can see how not having her mom affects her still...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(...because even though Akane's sisters are older than her, they are not exactly mature women, Kasumi is just 19, even if she shows more maturity than most ppl in that house, which we can attribute to having to grow up faster and take on household's chores)
You leave Akane alone and she can be pretty sensible and reach the "right" conclusions, whereas Ranma lacks emotional intelligence and needs to be pushed. She's good for him because she makes him grow...
Tumblr media
At the same time, Ranma is good for Akane because she shouldn't grow up too fast. It's good for her to be able to relax and be a little clown, in ways she's not free to be with everyone. Ranma provides safety in multiple ways
(you could also say there is a struggle in where to be childish and where to be mature in some of their conflicts... Ranma is not good with words, so conflicts are often resolved with him SHOWING his feelings after a childish fight)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the other thing that can really "break" Akane is "am I being a burden to Ranma?" but that's another conversation...)
(this was brought to you by me being reminded that the dead husband was the main girls' high school teacher in Maison Ikkoku, and you see the doc already liked Kasumi when she was wearing her fucking high school uniform in that flashback šŸ˜)
(Akane can get hurt because of Ranma's immaturity sometimes, but going from molding herself after her older sister because she crushed on an older man to liking Ranma, who likes her as she is, and being herself, is the best thing that could have happened to her there. Akane was vulnerable)
(this is also brought to you by me being extremely annoyed by people thinking Akane is looking for models of femininity in the other girls when sheā€™s not, which Iā€™m blaming on the old fucking show, resulting in not enough people paying enough attention to the manga to pick up any of this stuff)

So there you have it! My picks for the real anime awards of 2024! Don't take this seriously at all, it's just something fun I like to put together every year. I always try not to nominate the same things, but it's so hard to include a variety sometimes! šŸ˜…

Propaganda:
Gonzo:
- All muppets have a certain level of gender
- There are a few comic strips joking about Gonzo's gender being "whatever" (the bathroom strip where they go pat both the men's and the women's to go into the whatever comes to mind)
- They're an artist and a showman (show-whatever?) which is very trans of them
- In the Muppet Babies reboot they did a Cinderella type story with Gonzo as Cinderella and they wore a dress. Which honestly just fits very well into their whole gender situation
Saotome Rama:
- There is nothing Cis about the premise of Rama
- A character that can switch between "girl" form and "boy" form is any multigendered person's dream
- Often times when Rama is in "girl" form they still identify as a boy, though occasionally they will also call themself a girl in their head or even out loud even when it's to people that know their secret so there's no real reason.

#2 Shampoo (Ranma 1/2)
Nihao! Hi-ya! This girl has always been my favorite part of Ranma. Is she a little outdated with the broken Japanese? Yeah, but it isn't nearly as bad as stuff like the hot springs guard dude. Shampoo is also supposed to be from a pretty remote tribe and all. And look at her. She is such a cutie! I just love the pure chaos she brings into the series. Especially when she doesn't quite understand the two forms of Ranma are the same person. Trying to simultaneously marry "boy-type" Ranma and kill "girl-type" Ranma.
Shampoo just keeps getting better too. The cat form is cute and opens up Ranma's phobia. Obaba Cologne is an excellent tertiary character as is her childhood friend Mousse. Ranma is all about silly fun and Shampoo delivers that in spades any time she shows up in a story.

Ranma Ā½ (1989) ć‚‰ć‚“ć¾ 1/2

Summary:
Ranma Ā½ (Japanese: ć‚‰ć‚“ć¾ā 1/2ā , Hepburn: Ranma Nibun-no-Ichi, pronounced Ranma One-Half in English) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 1987 to March 1996, with the chapters collected in 38 tankōbon volumes by Shogakukan. The story revolves around a teenager named Ranma Saotome who has trained in martial arts since early childhood. As a result of an accident during a training journey, he is cursed to become a girl when exposed to cold water, while hot water changes him back into a boy. Throughout the series Ranma seeks out a way to rid himself of his curse, while his friends, enemies, and many fiancĆ©es constantly hinder and interfere.
Ranma Ā½ has a comedic formula and a sex-changing main character who often willfully transforms into a girl to advance his goals. The series also contains many other characters, whose intricate relationships with each other, unusual characteristics, and eccentric personalities drive most of the stories. Although the characters and their relationships are complicated, they rarely change once they are firmly introduced and settled into the series.
The manga has been adapted into two anime series produced by Studio Deen: Ranma Ā½ and Ranma Ā½ Nettōhen (ć‚‰ć‚“ć¾ā 1/2ā ē†±é—˜ē·Ø), which together were broadcast on Fuji TV from 1989 to 1992. In addition, they released 12 OVAs and three films. In 2011, a live-action television special was produced and aired on Nippon Television. Another anime adaptation produced by MAPPA premiered on October 6, 2024, broadcasting on Nippon Television and streaming on Netflix. The manga and anime series were licensed by Viz Media for English-language releases in North America. Madman Entertainment released the manga, part of the anime series, and the first two films in Australasia, while MVM Films released the first two films in the United Kingdom.
The Ranma Ā½ manga has over 55 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. Both the manga and anime are cited as among the first in their respective media to have become popular in the United States. Plot See also: List of Ranma Ā½ characters
On a training journey in the Bayankala Mountain Range in the Qinghai Province of China, Ranma Saotome and his father Genma fell into the cursed springs at Jusenkyo (å‘Ŗę³‰éƒ·). The cursed spring causes any afflicted to assume the physical form of whatever drowned there hundreds or thousands of years ago whenever they come into contact with cold water, which reverts on contact with hot water but resumes with exposure to cold water. Genma fell into the spring of a drowned panda while Ranma fell into the spring of a drowned girl.
Soun Tendo is a fellow practitioner of Musabetsu Kakutō RyÅ« (ē„”å·®åˆ„ę ¼é—˜ęµ) or "Anything-Goes School" of martial arts and owner of a dojo. Genma and Soun agreed years ago that their children would marry and carry on the Tendo Dojo. Soun has three teenage daughters: the polite and easygoing Kasumi, the greedy and indifferent Nabiki and the short-tempered, martial arts practicing Akane. Akane, who is Ranma's age, is appointed for bridal duty by her sisters with the reasoning that they are the older sisters and can dump the duty on her, and that they all dislike the arranged engagement and think Akane's dislike of men is the right way to express it to the fathers. At the appointed time, the Saotomes arrive in their new forms given by the cursed springs, confusing the Tendos, and ultimately leading to Akane seeing Ranma changing from girl form to boy form in the tub, much to her horror. It takes several more pages for the situation to be explained to Soun Tendo and his daughters. Both Ranma and Akane refuse the engagement initially, having not been consulted on the decision, but the fathers are insistent and they are generally treated as betrothed and end up helping or saving each other on some occasions. They are frequently found in each other's company and are constantly arguing in their trademark awkward love-hate manner that is a franchise focus.
Ranma goes to school with Akane at Furinkan High School (é¢Øꞗé¤Ø高ꠔ, FÅ«rinkan Kōkō), where he meets his recurring opponent Tatewaki Kuno, the conceited kendo team captain who aggressively pursues Akane, but also falls in love with Ranma's female form without ever discovering his curse (despite most other characters eventually knowing it). Nerima serves as a backdrop for more martial arts mayhem with the introduction of Ranma's regular rivals, such as the eternally lost Ryoga Hibiki who traveled halfway across Japan getting from the front of his house to the back, where Ranma spent three days waiting for him. Ryoga, seeking revenge on Ranma, followed him to Jusenkyo where he ultimately fell into the Spring of the Drowned Piglet. Now when splashed with cold water he takes the form of a little black pig. Not knowing this, Akane takes the piglet as a pet and
names it P-chan, but Ranma knows and hates him for keeping this secret and taking advantage of the situation. Another rival is the nearsighted Mousse, who also fell into a cursed spring and becomes a duck when he gets wet, and finally, there is Genma and Soun's impish grand master, Happosai, who spends his time stealing the underwear of schoolgirls.
Ranma's prospective paramours include the martial arts rhythmic gymnastics champion (and Tatewaki's sister) Kodachi Kuno, and his second fiancƩe and childhood friend Ukyo Kuonji the okonomiyaki vendor, along with the Chinese Amazon Shampoo, supported by her great-grandmother Cologne. As the series progresses, the school becomes more eccentric with the return of the demented, Hawaii-obsessed Principal Kuno and the placement of the power-leeching alternating child/adult Hinako Ninomiya as Ranma's English teacher. Ranma's indecision to choose his true love causes chaos in his romantic and school life.

hi! it's the one piece anon, this time off anon, lmao, thanks for the answer!
watching one piece for the first time as a adult with no prior attachment to it is wild, btwā€”and makes you want to take sanji and throw him into an active volcano about 100 times per episode, akbsjdjdj
i actually have no idea what my favourite arc would be so far, tbh, i enjoyed alabasta solely because of crocodileā€”i love me a horrible man who has a plan and executes it :)ā€”and thriller bark was a good time, and now impel down is fun because stakes! i love stakes! i keep complaining to my friend that no 'death' ever really sticks, lmao, and now having accidentally spoiled myself i know that at least one will, akhsjdjdj
also, i have So Many opinions, it's insane, so glad that my friend knows i'm a yapper and analyser at heart and wanted to watch (in her case rewatch) the show with me because of that, lmao, and i am looking forward to when we are in a place where it's safe to engage with fandom stuff because man, i wanna yap so bad about this show
(and we are watching Everything which means no skipping the bad partsā€”we have seen sanji be on the second maiden isle react like the biggest douche and yeah.....that was fun :) truly)
(also, zoro is just. great, i love that man <3 especially because my sense of direction is just slightly better than his)
(this got very long, oops)
please don't apologize I fucking love talking about one piece lmao I literally bard the series to a friend b/c they don't wanna watch 1000+ episodes and they don't read manga but they really like the series (and loved OPLA)
Sanji is....sigh. Like the Whole Cake arc with him is great, like it's really strong and Sanji at his peak. There's times when I really like Sanji - one of my favorite small moments is when he gives Ussop his goggles back in Alabasta sanji/ussop gets no love b/c ussop is ugly even tho they're a great ship rip. Another great moment is when he gives Nami his jacket in Little Garden, and when he helps Violet in Dressrosa, like, when Sanji's compassion is front and center he's GREAT.
The problem is Sanji is a product of a very old shounen trope - the perverted man gag - quoting myself here but it's an age old gag - DBZ has Oolong, and Master Roshi, Inu-yasha has Miroku, Naruto has Jiraiya, Ranma 1/2 has Master Happosai - just to list some off the top of my head. Sanji's gag isn't new and it's not even unique. If there's any difference its that Sanji is just better developed than most - not all, but most - of these types of chars. Which creates a big dissonance with how western fans deal with and discuss Sanji.
I hate the gag but like, it's canon, Oda isn't writing for me he's writing for teenage (Japanese) boys first and foremost. It is what it is and I just take Sanji as is and am glad OPLA toned him the fuck down.
Crocodile is a fandom fave for a reason, he's such a deliciously fun antagonist and I'm glad he came back in Impel Down and is still around even after that.
Ngl I almost dropped the series b/c of Alabasta LOL sorry guys! It's one of my least favorite arcs of the series I felt like it dragged so damn hard. It introduced so many important characters - Vivi, Ace, Crocodile, Robin - and plots - the weapons - but omggggg I was bored at times.
Water 7 is probably my favorite arc, maybe followed by Wano? Idk I'm apparently one of the weird fans who likes a lot of the post-timeskip arcs. I think Dressrosa is a great arc and also up there for me. I liked Skypiea well enough - and it becomes stronger with time - but I'm meh on Little Garden, East Blue Saga doesn't get good until Sanji imo when we get into the Nami stuff which IS one of my fave arcs of the series, I like Thriller Bark than most the halloween stuff is great, but my favorite arcs are all post-timeskip except Water 7 Saga.
The death stuff is something a lot of fans talk about and I've learned that Oda has addressed this. Basically he said he doesn't like drawing characters who die - ironic considering other things that happen in the story lmao - he wants to keep the story a kid friendly adventure and doesn't wanna draw char deaths. So you get Pell and that dude in Skypiea lol Oda
Zoro is great, I hope he never gets a "new" backstory b/c I like his normal ass backstory not all the straw hats need to have secret tragic backstories! Let my man be moderately normal, have bad direction and wanna dedicate his entire self to his Captain :3

I think my brain is wanting me to write a Ranma-Persona Crossover
Tumblr media
This is the second ranma-related artwork I made, and another ranmaification of characters from p3
In the Ranma Au, I guess I'll call it that, Ryoji is introduced because he's trapped in the gym thanks to a bunch of seals around the place made by the rivals and love interests (Both Kodachi and Tatewaki kuno, Shampoo, Ukyo, Ryoga, Mousse, from off the top of my head) because they all thought he was a demon (he's just the god of death) and sealed him in there.
Ryoji can also use his spells, but as an added bonus, he can go into other forms as well (no jusenkyo curse): Thanatos, Partial-Nyx (wings, tail feathers, feathered body, clawed arms, yellow irises with black scelarae, normal in other regards.), and Nyx Avatar. He's also able to review the life of someone just from looking at them if he wanted to, which he does to intimidate his opponents first as a way to let them know that he is more than mortal.
Of course, he's also still able to do the arcana shift and boy do i have to explain that.
In the Ranma Au, Arcanas tend to give the user power based on what element/spell types the arcana tends to use the most. Ex: Death is curse-based and weak to light, which can also mean that in this AU, you can trap death by literally putting seals. However, death is also the most powerful Arcana, as Ryoji is able to defeat Ranma and other subsequent challengers in just his mortal form. Having that little nuisance of death being easily trapped by seals is what counters that all-powerful ability.

As there were a lot of people doing this trend I decided to do it too, here are the inspirations for the creation of my OCs, in these posts you will find my main OC Yumi
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Explaining the inspirations
starting with Mutsumi Yozakura (mission Yozakura family) Mutsumi was the first inspiration for the creation of Yumi, when I joined the Fandom last year shortly before the glorious event of the masquerade ball, I didn't have many ideas to create my OC, until I started reading the manga Mission Yozakura family, a family of spies with superhuman abilities, and so the first concepts of Yumi began to be created
Now we have Princess Jasmine, although her appearance does not match Jasmine's appearance, personality and history, they are very similar, just like Jasmine, Yumi ended up growing up surrounded by the walls of her house after her mother's death, without ever being able to leave because of Ren's paranoia and excessive concern, both long for freedom, have a free spirit, a little rebellious and stubborn, but they have a big heart, and they also ended up falling in love with boys who had a totally different life than them (Jasmine falling in love with Aladdin and Yumi falling in love with falling in love with Jamil).
Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) Although they don't have many similarities, I used Usagi as inspiration because Yumi was a crybaby when she was younger, but she matured and became a strong woman. They both have huge hearts, love their families and friends, and are willing to take risks to protect those they love. Although they were initially weak and crybabies, they became strong women for those they love.
Hinata (Naruto) Just like Hinata, Yumi is very calm, a little shy, but has enormous strength. Initially, they didn't feel suitable for the roles they played, but with the support of the people who were important to them, they grew up and became strong.
Sakura (Naruto) just like Sakura Yumi was insecure and didn't consider herself strong, but she decided to strengthen herself, becoming stronger to protect those she loves, despite being someone very patient, her patience is not infinite, and she gets stressed quite easily, they have great brute strength, and intelligence, despite their lack of patience they are loyal friends, and you can always count on them, strong-spirited women, who don't bow to anyone.
Mitsuri kanroji (kimetsu no yaiba) just like Mitsuri, Yumi is someone kind, affectionate and quite cheerful, she has great strength, and just like Mitsuri she has a great appetite and flexibility, despite being someone "cute" Yumi can still become the most dangerous girl you have ever seen, she does not think twice before using her strength to protect those she loves
Nagisa shiota (ansatsu kyoshitsu) just like Nagisa, Yumi is someone very intelligent, and has a great talent for assassination, both are the cute but lethal type, they are great assassins, but also good friends so remember that if you betray her she knows how to get rid of you
tenten (Naruto) just like tenten, Yumi is a great weapons expert, and knows how to fight using different types of weapons, the "weapons mistress" of the Yozakura family
shampoo and Ranma (Ranma 1/2) just like both characters Yumi knows several martial arts and is very good at the art of fighting, her fighting style is similar to that of both characters, mixed with the fighting style of Sakura, Hinata and Mitsuri
a brief summary of her personality, since it can change a lot depending on the occasion or the people is that
She is a calm and quiet girl, but she doesn't have much patience and gets angry quickly, while she can be the kindest and most loving girl in the world she can and will ruin your life if you anger her or try to hurt someone she likes, she is kind and usually helps others, but don't try to abuse her kindness or you will regret it.
She is neither a saint nor a villain but she has somewhat gray morals, she will help her friends, but she will not cover up her actions, as she usually says "assume the consequences of your actions". She can and will get rid of someone without any weight on her conscience if that person becomes a threat to her or her friends, and a little greedy and manipulative but she does it because she still wants to stay alive, the life she and her family lead is dangerous and follows the motto of "the strong survive" so if she wants to stay alive she will make sure she is on top.
She considers herself a little cruel at times, but even so, deep down she is a good person, a kind, loving and fun girl, but she had to make several choices to stay alive, she is the most human of her brothers but even so she does not completely understand how a normal human should act, she knows that certain things she does are wrong and immoral, but she does not care about that.
Like it or not, she is a Yozakura, her destiny was obviously marching in blood, and that unfortunately would not change.
She is a flower stained with blood, a cherry tree that bloomed beautifully in adversity, a cherry tree that was watered in blood to thrive.

Ranma 1/2 PokƩmon Team, part 2:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Explanations:
Kodachi:
Kodachi is manipulative so I thought maybe a psychic pokemon would fit her!
Flying types because she's an acrobat and a gymnastic girl so she has to do many stunts in air.
Dark... Thought it fit her. No idea why, probably just vibes.
Grass type ( I wrote it as plant šŸ˜”) because of her connection to roses!
Kuno Tatewaki
Fighting, because he likes to fight lol
Flying because the dude is always getting punched into the sky and things similar to that, also his connection to the Phoenix bird.
Fire, because again to his Phoenix bird and that Ova.
The next PokƩmons were chosen bc: Thought it fit his vibe, slowpoke because he's a moron, sword PokƩmon because I thought that having a cursed sword is very Kuno like. Somehow he wouldn't get killed by it though (maybe because he's too dumb)
Ryoga Hibiki:
First PokƩmon because pig + fire, and I think Ryoga is very passionate and also his curse.
Geodude because of a comment that made me laugh in last post.
Machoke because... thought I'd fit him.
Rock type because he breaks rocks, that's it lol
Rockruff because it reminded me of Ryoga's little doggy.
Two last ones because I somewhat thought it would fit his vibe, specifically that the horsey has enough power to carry his own weight 50x times over.
Shampoo:
Almost full kitty team because of her curse. I didn't pay too much attention to the types although I did not completely overlook them.
Purrloin seemed like a good fit, and the description of the pokemon being mischievous but tricking people because of how cute they are make sense for Shampoo.
Sylveon seemed like a good fit, somehow I felt Fairy type would be cute on shampoo.
Skitty is very cute, and Shampoo is too.
Gardevoir, I thought for her plans and schemes it would fit a PokƩmon who would be there for her no matter what.
Picked the version which is poison fighting because I wanted Shampoo to have at least one fighting type PokƩmon because of her being an Amazon. Poison also seems to fit her too.
Normal Fight, I thought the PokƩmon fit her because of the charming nature.
That's all for now! Next will be Ukyo and the emo boy I can't remember the name now.

finished re-reading the jewel arc & I have thoughts...
The plot is about Ranma making Shampoo "say she loves him," yet the climax says his heart is unwaveringly Akane's. Ahampoo shows interest? He pulls away. Akane's "interest" is way more intense, yet he pulls closer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notably, all the fiancƩes tell Ranma they love him in this arc, but only Akane's declaration gets to him. It reminds him that love is supposed to be something you feel and not a mindless challenge to win
Tumblr media
These two panels being only a couple of pages apart really spell things out. Look at Ranma being put off by just a "hot stare" vs instantly leaning in and ~staring~ at Akane after an intense love confession. Atrociously down bad.
Tumblr media
Similar to Tsubasa calling him ugly, Shampoo's rejection is framed as an attack, not just on his ego, but on his self-worth (this time also tied to public judgment). He reacts to both as if it were a challenge, his fighting aura visible... but the differences are interesting
Tumblr media
The challenge against Tsubasa is clearly about looks, but with Shampoo at its core is more about likability. She doesn't attack his looks, she says he's a scum (and so should be hated). Even if he's like "am I no longer irresistible?" he's focusing on love, not attraction
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he's looking for validation with Ukyo, he doesn't ask "am I attractive to you?" (which is what you would associate with "being irresistible") but "do you love me?" (am I the type of guy girls fall in love with? ... that's what he connects with "irresistible")
Tumblr media
Much to say about Ranma being emotionally stunted but this is the kind of stuff showing that at his core, he's a soft, romantic guy, jerk-ness notwithstanding. Classmates might say it's about desire (because THEY're horny lol) but he never goes there. Freaks out at the suggestion even
Tumblr media
You can see the contrast with the classmates from the beginning (horny talk) while Ranma is focused on Akane's smile... his fantasies with girls are always something romantic with Akane, and it's hundreds of chapters before his interest in seeing Akane naked is brought up.
Tumblr media
Ranma's personal space is invaded with frequency, which affects him, but all interest for him is tied to romance. There's a certain distance in challenges and playing characters, but I don't think he's comfortable with being desired from up close... unless he's in love (Akane)
Tumblr media
And even then it's difficult for him. You can see how much he's about romance when he does not react at all to Shampoo's bridal fit (the cutest she has ever looked mind you... and yet) and with Akane just the sigh gets a big reaction
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think it makes sense to be a soft romantic at heart and struggle with being disliked. Wanting space from someone who annoys you doesn't mean you want/can take actual hostility from them. Being "dumped" is also a form of "losing" and Ranma must win absolutely everything.
Tumblr media
Every step of the way he frames this as a challenge, a matter of reputation, armor, strategy, etc... without ever processing there are real, actual feelings at play (love is a battle, a simple challenge, instead of.... you know, love... he's not associating any of it with feelings! ... until Akane "confesses"). Other characters misjudge him for the bit, but Kasumi/Nabiki as a duo usually get it right
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Akane can get angry because of misunderstandings/insecurities, but sometimes she's angry because she's being more perceptive and mature than Ranma and simply sees he's being an insensitive dumbass. (Ranma telling her not to be jealous also indicates he's not processing/seeing this as wanting someone else)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sidenotes: it hits me that Shampoo is really a cat lol only truly dangerous when she feels (emotionally) cornered but otherwise she's just fucking around. ā€œShe hates me frā€ says the melodramatic guy whose examples of "cold" and "hatred" are juvenile annoyance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shampoo's abilities are plot devices more than anything else. If you take it seriously the speed with which Ranma defeats her is frankly disrespectful lol only the boys get Serious Fights. The tone with the female fighters is just different, no point in fixating on abilities or the like with them
Tumblr media
(says something interesting about sexism in-world though. Cologne ya girl is getting washed, stand up! alas, she's only interested in future husband as she's ensured Shampoo's survival in her village. Could speculate the same happens to Akane, where she's trained just enough to be able to defend herself in her peaceful world, but then is left alone as the future of the dojo is expected to fall in the hands of a strong husband) (Mostly is the shonen of it all, as we're expected to believe none of the female martial artists have a sustained interest in improving/becoming stronger like the boys have. I suspend my belief here because there's still plenty to like about these characters, how the female fighters can be used, and because it's funny. What can I say. A bitch is being entertained)

Ranma 1/2 Thoughts, Meta Edition
I have consumed...a lot of Ranma 1/2 content.
I mean, this is kinda what happens when you're a repressed transgirl who discovers the manga a year into a marriage that you got into to "fix" being trans and be "a real boy" in a desperate bid to fill the hole that you wouldn't learn for two decades could only be filled by living as your true self.
I've encountered precisely four (4) types of Ranma 1/2 fans in that time:
Transwomen who see Ranma as their idealized expression of the gender experience ("I'm not like this because I want to be, it's a curse. A curse that gives me a smokin' hot body and HUGE tits! But it's tooootally a curse, for realsies! I'll find a cure any day now, see how hard I'm looking? I'm trying sooooo hard to find a cure...")
Transmen who see Ranma as their perfect representation of their gender experience ("I'm a guy, damnit! This body...it's a curse! I hate it and I want nothing better than to be cured, but all sorts of Life Bullshit keeps getting in the way!")
Lesbians who kin either Ranma (butch NB lesbian) or one of their love interests (Akane - comphet closetted butch lesbian, Shampoo - Strong, smokin' hot bad bitch who goes after what she wants, Ukyo - transmasc coded genderfluid NB)
Completely clueless nimrods who miss the FUCKING POINT and are only into the show for the martial arts and think it would be better if Ranma got cured and they stopped having funny stuff happen.
(In case it's not obvious, IMHO the last group are the worst parts of the fandom and need to Go Away. Most of the toxic stuff that exists in R.5 fanspaces is because of this group of assholes which includes the incels that think everything would be better if Ranma just did stuff that's questionable from an ethics and morality perspective and chased after Shampoo because she's the closest thing to a Barbie-doll these closet fascists can allow themselves to fantasize about playing with, completely ignoring that she's a complex character that's a subversive pastiche to the Japanese racist stereotypes of the 1980s.)
I'm not kidding when I say that in the early days of the public Internet (before Facebook and Twitter ruined it for everyone), Ranma 1/2 was the SINGLE largest fandom by a MASSIVE stretch. I once checked my math on this by going to Fanfiction.net (before the massive purges) and brought up the Big List of All Fandoms and right there at the top with a MASSIVE number of fics was Ranma 1/2 by a HUGE margin. It took three fandoms (Star Trek, Doctor Who, and I believe Naruto if I'm recalling correctly) to have their combined total number of fics exceed the number of R.5 fics on FF.net...and that was JUST FF.net. There was an entire separate index (The Penultimate Ranma 1/2 Fanfic Index) that had the single task of listing, not even curating or reading or reviewing, ONLY Ranma 1/2 fanfics. Not fanart, not commentary, no RP blogs or chat transcripts or whatever, JUST fanfics. And only about half of those linked to FF.net, meaning that if you dig up the archives you'll find at least 60% of all fanfics that people had managed to index in the Ranma 1/2 fandom are missing because they were never properly archived and just...faded from the Internet as the public servers and places like Geocities started disappearing. You can find teasing, tantalizing hints of larger works that all we have left, like scraps of ancient papyri revealing a quote from a missing book of the Bible, are single chapters backed up on niche sites that managed to get spider-crawled by Archive.org, but many great works are just...lost. (There's an ero fic called "Playing with Water" that was SUPER hot and featured elements that we have tags for on porn sites but didn't really have proper words for back in the day...but even back when it was first being written finding the thing was hard...and today? Nearly impossible.)
(If you wonder why I'm such an absolute RABID advocate of AO3, this is why)
For me, Ranma will always be the transfemme coded genderfluid hero that we needed in the late 80s and early 90s. We were on the tail end of the AIDS pandemic, and just like COVID-19 there were a bunch of assholes who used it to ride to power and marginalize queer folk. It was easier to do with AIDS, of course, given the absolutely massive numbers of queer cis men and transwomen who contracted it and died. (Sidebar: the reason "L" comes first in "LGBTQIA+" is because it was the Lesbian nurses who were the caretakers of the Gay men who were dying in numbers large enough to be counted as a tragic statistic instead of a mere tragedy) and while the world was starting to acknowledge (again) that gay men was a thing that existed and they weren't actually trying to corrupt the youth, what we now call "transgender" was still listed in the DSM as a mental disorder that required treatment to "cure." According to the cultural majority in damn near every field you can imagine, the Gender Binary was the only way to exist and if you didn't fit neatly into one or the other then you were Damagedā„¢ and had to be Fixedā„¢ for The Good of All Peopleā„¢ (but specifically so cis-het-white folks, usually men, could feel comfy and not be confronted by things that made them feel icky and might have cooties). It's a truism that's treated as a joke that transwomen get into coding and wind up doing IT work in such massive numbers that between us and the furries we ARE the foundation of the modern Internet. And into the fanspaces packed to the brim with closetted AMAB transwomen who hadn't yet had their egg cracked came this plucky martial artist that gets to swap their gender with a splash of water but somehow still winds up the best of the best, the finest martial artist of their generation. (Goku can suck it, Ranma would turn the Kamea-meha right back on the over-muscled, braindead loser with a food fetish and still make it home in time for Kasumi's dinner)
I'm no sociologist, anthropologist, behaviorist, whatever, but I suspect that the reason Ranma Saotome spawned such a large fanbase so early in the modern Internet's history was specifically because the series created a safe space where people could talk about gender issues with a degree of separation that helped strip away the stigma surrounding feeling like you were in the wrong body.
I get why people like the martial arts aspect. I mean, Ranma kills a demigod. This is NOT something to sneeze at. I also understand the transmen who latch onto Ranma as a kin because I get the feeling like you have no control over what your body's doing and you're going through your days in existential dread of what might be dragging you further and further away from what you always knew was right and correct about yourself. It's a terrifying thing and here's someone who (esp. the anime version) IS a guy trapped in a girl's body.
For me, though, and for a LOT of transwomen out there, Ranma is transfemme. And, yes, canonically Ranma states right near the end of the manga that they're both and they kinda forgot about the 'cure' when they had to pick between that and the really important stuff and that they're okay with being fluid ('cause water, gettit?!) about their gender and it's a damn shame this was the 80s 'cause a continuation might wind up showing Ranma embracing being both...
BUT, and this is a transfemme thing, I know, if you continue the parabolic arc of Ranma's character development, the logical conclusion (for us) is that she eventually decides that she's a woman and just lives in her "cursed" form the majority (or all) of the time.
And yes, this is because that's the transfemme story arc. In the manga in some distant part of the multiverse that peers into our universe and for some reason decides to make me the MC (god, that must be a FUCKING BORING manga by our standards, I weep for those fans), my story arc is the gradual progression of uncracked, closetted transgirl to transitioned out and proud transbien mom. At one point I swapped back and forth between gender presentations because it was safer for me to appear in some spaces as the male that they thought I was. Now I would prefer to die before being forced to go back to pretending to be a man again.
Ranma has the choice, and good for them. Until the Kaisufuu is permanently destroyed, even if the "curse" is locked, they have the option of going one way or the other based solely on their own, personal desire. I can't say I'd be comfortable with that option being available. In that theoretical manga where there's a reboot that gives me a condition like Ranma's, I'd probably wind up destroying the equivalent to the Kaisufuu just because of the threat to my mental wellbeing it presents.
So it's not a stretch to imagine Ranma making the same choice. She's a woman now, she has the life she never realized she wanted because she never had the choice so didn't know she was allowed to imagine it, but now she's happier than ever and why would she ever go back to that struggle of being a guy that only ever brought her pain and challenges and heartache?
