The mother who sells her daughter to One Direction is a fanfiction trope from the early/mid 2010s. Basically young girls would write fanfiction that usually went something like:

The main character wakes up/comes home from school

detailed outfit description

The main character's horrible abusive mother tells her that she's sold her to One Direction

Main character gets picked up in a limo

Main character gets new, fancier clothes

Main character lives with One Direction for the rest of the fic, tags along on tours, and bonds with the band members

Sometimes, one of the band memebers would date the main character, as a sort of arranged marriage/kidnapping romance. However, the author was generally aware that she was too young to date any of them, and too old to be their kid, so the whole "sold to One Direction" became a middle ground. It's basically a fantasy for tween/early teen girls to get to bond with their favorite celebrities and be their favorite person, without there having to be romance. And it's an achieveble fantasy, because the main character doesn't have to start out as a celebrity or musical genius.

However, for a kid to be sold, their parents have to be horrible. So the parents would be over the top ridiculously abusive, and quite similar to Lady Susan. One Direction would be chill though, despite buying a child.

Thank you! I didn't get really into fan fiction until recently, and I mostly write and read Jane Austen fan fiction, so this trope doesn't come up too much. However, I have read descriptions of fics where Darcy buys Elizabeth and then is super chill, despite the human buying thing. It all makes sense now.

OK. Tell them. Make it a teaching moment. Everyone who's in your movement learned the background from somewhere at some point, maybe this is that point for that person. Give them a jumping off point that they can dive into later.

"Oh but I shouldn't be responsible for teaching baby -punks about the history and the how-tos and--"

OK. Then don't tell them. You don't have to be responsible for teaching people with a budding interest in your group the ins and outs and how-tos. That's fair and valid! It can be a lot of work. Someone else will handle it

"But I'm annoyed that they would try to claim to be part of/be interested in my community without knowing all the details that I know after being in it for months/years/decades, they're dumb, they're posers, they're--"

OK. Then don't engage with them, if it's that bad. Maybe someone else will come around and tell them the history, maybe they'll pick it up on their own, maybe they'll just enjoy the fashion elements for awhile.

I feel like we have a few options here. People can either talk to them, share the history, share the values, share the praxis. Or they can just chase off anyone who even thinks about dipping a toe in their community, and then wonder why it's dying off later down the line.

I dunno, maybe I'm too naive and patient or whatever. But if people are entering your -punk spaces without knowing The Rundown of what you feel they need to know, maybe being nice about it and informing people instead of immediately assuming stupidity and malicious intent could help you make a new friend. Even the loudest voices in a space had to learn from somewhere, and not everyone has the luxury of being in the space as the History was Happening--whether it's an age thing or a not being aware of the space thing. Or maybe I just don't see what the big deal is behind people hating people who like the aesthetic of something and don't know the behind the scenes history about it yet.

Because I believe in the word 'yet.' No one comes into this world knowing everything about everything, and we're all constantly learning new things. I'm not gonna degrade someone and call them a poser for not knowing what I know. Because if it were me, interested in a scene but getting chased out and called a poser? I wouldn't hit the books and study up, I'd go 'that fuckin sucks, those people sucked' and then avoid anyone and anything having to do with it.

So chase people off and call them posers if you want. But if your community starts dwindling, don't be fucking shocked.

in boring adult annoyances, i recently converted my checking account to a different type of checking account with the same credit union. i've done this a couple times over the years cuz it's the same checking account my dad helped me set up when i was 13 and this CU is still my primary financial institution. asked the banker

"will my account number remain the same?"

"yes, we're just converting it to a different type of the same account!"

"so my direct deposit and autopays won't be impacted?"

"correct!"

"and i can still use the same debit card i've been using for the last ~6 years!"

"absolutely!"

"great, let's do it."

fast forward to this week, when three of my autopay bills bounced, my debit card isn't working, and a closer look at my account number shows a 1-digit change at the end. go back to the same branch like "hey no offense but what the fuck??"

different banker takes a look at my accounts, makes a Face, and politely casually asks "so where did you go to make the switch? :)"

"here, this branch. that person over there was actually the one who helped me."

The Face intensifies. ".....Ah. I See. well, it looks like the way the changes were made may have Disrupted some things. you're gonna need a new debit card, etc, i'll get that printed for you ASAP."

[5 minutes later the banker who fucked up the first transaction sheepishly approaches me to hand over my new debit card & apologize profusely.]
