so. mikoto's (past ig?) fixation that Milgram is some reality show/program. a lot of people discuss this from the lens of fear and anxiety. like having to do with being watched. which i don't disagree with! but i think there could be another perspective to view this from that i haven't seen ppl talk about really.. (tho i think thats more reflective of me than others). which would be it's a coping mechanism, not necessarily a fear.

mikoto struggles a lot with denial. obviously. and denial is a coping mechanism. because reality is scary. and finding reality scary is a problem that resonates greatly with ppl who struggle with dissociation. cause i mean. thats the whole point of dissociating. reality is too overwhelming, so you dissociate.

the scariest thing for me is that this is, in fact, reality. over the years ive heard ppl who don't normally dissociate discuss their experiences with dissociating. and its usually something along the lines of what was happening was scary to them. they were scared that nothing felt real or that they didn't feel real, etc. i could never relate to this tho. what i find scary is when i suddenly realize that i am real and that my life is real. i find feeling real scary. and for as long as i can remember i have taken comfort in the idea that i'm just in a video game or TV show. and i think this is closer to the experience of those with chronic dissociation, just from what i've seen from others and read.

if Milgram is a reality show program, then that means none of this is actually real. he can't actually be hurt. this will just be a silly little event and then once it's over he can go back to his life.

but i think these two statements "his belief that this is all just a reality TV program is connected to his fears and past experience with being watched (stalked)" and "his belief that this is all just a reality TV program is a coping mechanism" can coexist and could both be true.

It is fine to draw a distinction between what kinds of fictional torture you personally find sympathetic and why, but once we move beyond "all torture is bad because of course it is" to "I can find fictional characters who do bad things sympathetic despite disagreeing with their actions," you are going to find people who draw the line in different places and ideally find ways to coexist with them peacefully in shared community spaces. Everyone who likes 0 torture from their favourites has already put the book down and walked away to do something else.

A thing that is true about Jiang Cheng throughout the novel is that there is a lot of ambiguity and deliberate misdirection involved in his portrayal. I know this makes a subset of fans who would prefer to take his introduction at face value very upset, but honestly they're going to have to take that up with MXTX. I direct your attention, (again) to the way his scars are introduced, or the misdirect at the burial mounds, or the way she saved the reveal about what he did to protect Wei Wuxian for the very end of the novel. That is an invitation to think really hard about what we actually know about him vs. what we've simply been told, because we know that what we're being lead to assume isn't always reliable, and moreover that the reveal is likely to be that Jiang Cheng was up to something much more sympathetic than what we were originally lead to believe. I actually can't think of a time when the reveal is worse than the initial assumption. MXTX is enough of a nerd to knows exactly what she did, and you can see her playing similar narrative tricks in her other books. I think some of the places this takes people are kind of silly and not based on a very strong textual analysis, but I also think a bit of silliness can be really fun, and there is a lot of room for reasonable people to disagree!

For example, your conceptualization of Jiang Cheng includes the idea that:

Because we don't have direct evidence of anything any demonic cultivators did beyond Mo Xuanyu, who orchestrated a fairly gruesome murder suicide, and Xue Yang, who killed rather a lot of people, it is safe to assume most demonic cultivators are nice people who did nothing wrong

When Xue Yang was arrested his demonic cultivation was broadly publicized and Jiang Cheng doubted that the Jin would handle it in a way he considered appropriate

Jiang Cheng knew Xue Yang was a demonic cultivator and also alive and let him be for unspecified reasons of his own

You see why not everyone agrees with your take, right? This is not, to my mind, a particularly plausible read on the Xue Yang situation. Nevertheless you are entitled to go forth and have fun with it, and if it makes you happy then I hope that's what you do! Just maybe accept that other people are not going to join you in that headcanon and try to be chill about that.

the singing is nice, actually. eerie but very beautiful. as long as he can still sleep, he doesn't mind. if he can't sleep, he may like.... politely ask please no singing while he's trying to sleep? he really doesn't know how to talk to a ghost. but they seem nice.

he won't go out of his way to either interact with them or avoid them and it doesn't really bother him that no one else can see or hear them. they just kinda peacefully coexist.

if the others ask him about it, he'll tell them straight up about the singing ghost, as long as the ghost doesn't appear distressed about being known to the others. but he doesn't want this ghost thing to distract them either, so he reminds everyone to keep their heads on.

prosciutto is dumbfounded. for real? a ghost? this is ridiculous! and why is he the only one who can see or hear it? he's just kind of annoyed by it more than anything.

the singing is rather lovely, though. if there's too much noise going on in the house and he's getting a headache, that's probably the first time he'd try like, talking to them? to be like, please--and he feels ridiculous just talking to thin air or an apparition--no singing rn. he will begrudgingly thank them when they stop, and while he's at it he may as well let them know that they do have a beautiful voice there's just too much noise right now. the ghost seems to like the compliment.

it's very soothing otherwise. maybe after some time has passed since that first interaction and he's the only one in the house, he may ask why he's the only one who can see or hear them, cause he is a bit curious. whether the ghost has an explanation or not, he'll just kinda be like aight then

really he's a bit curious about the whole ghosts existing thing in general but he just kinda takes what he's presented with. may not give straightforward answers about the whole ghost thing if the others are making a ruckus about it, at least at first, cause he doesn't want to rile em all up.

VERY fascinated. thrilled, honestly! how fucking cool is it that there's a ghost right in front of him? too bad the others can't see or hear it, but he supposes that makes him lucky.

will compliment the ghost on their beautiful voice and ask a whole bunch of questions. why is he the only one who can see or hear them? do they like to sing just because? are they bound to the base, or to him, or something else keeping them tethered to this world? do they know what's beyond? can they see or interact with their stands? souls exist, seeing as someone's stand is a manifestation of it, so are ghosts souls without bodies? or something else?

he's just very curious and friendly, maybe a bit overbearing, but he's just excited. even with all his questions, he avoids asking how they died cause even though social cues aren't his strong point (especially with the dead????), he still figures that must be pretty rude to say the least. he may happily sway to whatever tune they're singing or find himself humming it later.

will be very excited to share this with everyone as long as the ghost is okay with that. doesn't care if he sounds silly or the others don't believe him, that's not his problem. will assuage any fears from the ones who are more scared by the idea of a ghost (they're just a person!)

I'm a big indecisive softy so I couldn't answer any of those. Last one clearly indicates a certain **theme** in the game 🤔

Long ask - long answer! Like, very long.  The following is based on my personal opinions, visions of characters, marriage, human behaviour etc etc, and I’m fine if you disagree with me. Also, warning - adult topics.

Okay, the input info: 

- I think for myself, not for my prophetess (what I am: mid twenties female who values personal space in a relationship the most).  - I don’t turn it into modern au.  - This is “fuck/marry/kill”, not “snug/marry/kill” (I believe it’s implied, but still, ADULT TOPICS AHEAD) - For me(for this game) marriage is a combo of the first of our wonderful three-positions list, the lack of wish to implement the third and commitment. If optimistic – even fruitful coexistence. I keep in mind marriage is stability and all. - “Kill” is mostly “off the table” for those characters I can’t see fitting for any of the first two positions. That doesn’t mean I want to kill them, except I specifically state so. 

1. Tharaêl, Jespar, Calia Starting with the hardest one.I’m telling bye to Calia, alas. She’s too lawful, and I’d be very grey morality-wise if put to their realities. Besides, she has these sub vibes and I agree with opinions she might be very dom when it comes to intimacy, but her whole sadness aura is not for me. I don’t want to deal with it if I don’t have to.  Jespar: we know what he thinks of any relationship - “as long as I feel like it - I’m here for it, else - adiós” and it’s pretty common for our world, but as we’re in a medieval and religious community, I believe open relationship is not common at all. I am thinking about marriage possibilities here, yes. He wouldn’t like the idea – it involves commitment. And I assume he’s the closest to me personality-wise, so we could be close friends, but I *want* commitment. Whether the relationship hits low or we’re doing pretty good – I want my spouse to be with me. Jespar is known for running away when things get bad. So yeah, he stays just for one night. And it seems I have to marry Tharael. Well… He’s very ESTJ, but I don’t mind if he takes care of, welp, everything. Pros: his understanding of “family” is quite classic to our world as well. Remember what he says in the Refuge - “no one will have to mourn me - no widow, no children, no friends”. So in his head he tried to fit the roles of a husband and a father(still can’t see how he’s capable of it, but he definitely gave it some thinking). Family for him = wife and kids. He acknowledges and accepts the commitment. Besides, he seems to be very responsible and reliable. He also tries to be rational, sometimes he even manages. And, as I see the Rhalata as a military formation, having spent 8 years there, he is very straightforward and strict/precise/exact (pick the right word). If something’s being said – rarely hidden context is implied. It makes communication much easier. Cons: he is explosive and I have strong suspicions he might be of jealous type. It is manageable, though. Especially if you set a list of rules together what is acceptable and what needs further explanations. He’s used to living following rules, so give him new ones and he’ll feel more confident. But careful, as it may play against you. Been there done that. Rules are cool as long as they’re acceptably flexible and you’re not trying to find how to cheat and break them. 

But out of these three, he is the husband material, at least for me. I’m not mentioning any intimacy above, as it would break the game for Tharael at all. But if elaborating – I don’t even know how you would drag him to your bedroom when he’s aware what he is and absolutely not aware what this new “shell” may produce as kids, if it is capable of it at all. So I politely ignore this fact. (In my otp it works as I headcanon the prophet can’t have children)

2. Tharaêl, Dijaam, Esme Why I would marry Esme: she *is* commitment. She cares a lot for a person she’s close to. She cares even after their relationship is not a thing anymore. I love this personality trait, and I’d like to see it in a potential spouse. I’m not sure what kind of relationship she prefers tho, if it’s open like Jespar wants them to be, I start doubting and think of picking Tharael again(not telling Tharael doesn’t care as much; in fact, he cares more). If not an open relationship – Esme is “lighter” than him, but also much more naive. But it’s okay, I can be oversuspicious for the both of us. So, marry Esme. And sorry, Dijaam, I have to kill you as I like Tharael more 🤷🏻‍♀️ 

3. Tealor, Coarek, Yuslan Ah, tricky. Yuslan once had a family – he’s capable of it, they were happy, so I’d pick him for marriage. I know how Qyranian people handle families and marriage, and poly relationships are definitely not my thing, but what he had was very “classy”, so I’m good.Tealor failed to have a family. He barely tried at all. Taranor – the lore never mentioned anything about any love interests. I guess not much difference here picking who to fuck and who to kill. I just pick what looks better, so… kill Tealor.

Ketaron I have to pick for just one night as I don’t see it possible for me to survive under the same roof with this shitty person… So I marry the Father. Nothing physical and it won’t be much I would have to contribute to this relationship but it would be interesting to learn new things, at least. GDBDNSKDJHHDDNDS GIRL................ ok so i very cleverly avoided ranking folklore because every song REALLY HIT and the whole album was just SO.. SO.. yeah. i can however rank miss evermore. i dont want to compare the two album i do not get the point in that. both give off really different vibes. now what i will say is with folklore, AS AN ALBUM, it is just a master masterpiece. The songs flowed amazingly with each other and really held you close the entire first listen. at least thats what I felt like <3 with evermore however, the individual songs are OMG!!! THERE IS LITERALLY NO SONG I DONT LIKE FROM ANY OF THE TWO ALBUMS. but as an album on the first listen i did feel a bit disconnected from evermore which didnt happen to me with folklore. why i think that might’ve happened is BECAUSE taylor is just so brilliant m8.... the MASSIVE contrasting emotions between the songs was too much for my little brain to handle.

Ok so now that I’ve thought a while about svtfoe finale I have some opinions

Things I liked:

Marco taking the wand from moon and Marco and Star walking through the portal hand in hand

The firstborn STILL tried to warn & help Star, even after she DIED. What a good unicorn daughter

Marco trying to use Star’s spells and then just creating some spells on the fly figuring it’d work better

Marco was willing to get STABBED to help Tom

We finally got to see Eclipsa’s butterfly form (and baby Meteora got a butterfly form)!

Baby Meteora learning how to dip down being plot relevant

Moon & Comet moment. Even tho Moon’s character isn’t great rn, I’m glad she got a moment with her mom

That Tomco moment (“ok can we recognize that Marco JUST FLIPPED A HORSE!” “I FLIPPED A HORSE!”). They are such good friends (and would’ve been such a cute ship), I love them. It’s really a shame this show didn’t do the tomstarco route (preferably in my opinion with Star and Tom both dating Marco but not each other, I’m not a huge fan of Tomstar and Star hasn’t proven to be a particularly good girlfriend to Tom, but it could be good either way).

Seeing the past queens again I love their designs (I want to know what Celena’s secrets are...)

Globgor, Eclipsa, and Meteora get to stay a happy family

Actually, surprisingly, I kinda liked Ponyhead in this episode? (A little bit). I liked how she tried to cheer Star up and then went “oh not again” when she thought Star was gonna get back together with Tom which I appreciated bc they’d already been together twice before and it hadn’t worked, and I liked that Ponyhead was aware enough to realize that probably wasn’t a good idea for them to try again

Janna! Her bonding moment with Marco where she actually said they were friends was so cute! And sbsjsvsjshs she dropped her heart rate to 0 for Marco what a legend. Janna Ordania, true ride or die.

More Jackie and her gf Chloe screen time (even if it was a few seconds. It was nice to see anyways)

Meteora and Mariposa get to grow up together after all

Star and Marco get a happy ending (and the show didn’t end with them kissing which was nice)

Oh does deleting the magic mean deleting the neverzone meaning Marco’s not 30 anymore?? I really really hope so that’d make any Marco ship so much less creepy. I’m accepting that as my canon thank you very much

Things I’m not sure how I feel about:

Hekapoo’s...complete neutrality towards her upcoming death? Ig it’s good that she evidently realized she’d done some bad stuff but uh...???

The pudding being able to keep your mind sharp in the magic dimension. On the one hand, I liked that there’s a REASON Glossaryck likes pudding so much and that we finally got an explanation for it, on the other hand I sorta wish that they’d figured that out BEFORE now. Now it kinda seems like the writers just needed something to explain how the Butterflies could stay focused in the magic dimension (but again, if they needed a plot device I’m glad it’s the pudding so...idk)

Ok what was the purpose of Tom riding the evil unicorn. I don’t get it. Don’t hate it or love it, am just confused.

Marco getting stabbed and hiding it from Tom and Star was some Good Angst Sh*t. The fact that that had absolutely no purpose, however, was not. I wish either Marco didn’t get stabbed, or there was actually some consequence to Marco getting stabbed as it was kinda pointless otherwise

The fact that both Star and Marco were willing to leave their families and worlds for the chance to be together. Obviously they care about each other, but they’re willing to give up their lives and families at 15 to be together? :/ (side note those shots of Marco huddled against the magic dimension rock were really pretty)

The portal thing. It didn’t make sense

Mewni and Earth being cleaved together. I mean on the one hand that’s cool, on the other hand that seems like it’s gonna create so many problems & just leaves me with a lot of questions. For example won’t humans just oppress monsters like mewmans did? Can Tom get back to his family? Is the underworld part of the Mewni dimension or is it it’s own? Did all the dimensions get merged into Mewnearth or just Mewni and Earth? How will Earth culture and Mewni culture learn to coexist?

Moon redemption. It seemed too easy, she didn’t really have to work for it! I mean her character was growing on me pre-her-working-with-Mina, but then she was revealed to be working with Mina and she made SOLARIAN WARRIORS I mean come on! I kinda wanted her to be redeemed bc I was unsatisfied with the Mina twist, but the way they did it was kinda :/ I want Star to be able to have a good relationship with her mother, but since Moon Did That and didn’t really face any consequences besides her daughter being mad at her for an episode...

That Solaria & Eclipsa & Meteora moment. I mean it was cute Solaria accepted them but she literally created Solarian warriors and committed monster genocide soooo...that’s definitely not enough to redeem her and it’s not great that she’s portrayed sympathetically

Things I didn’t like:

That they actually went with the “erase all the magic” plot line. Svtfoe is about Star the rebel princess, frequent subverter of expectations, so it was weird to me that they actually destroyed the magic and there wasn’t some twist like the four butterfly queens work together and unlock some super butterfly form or join hands in a circle around the Solarian Warriors and say the Whispering Spell or something else to defeat Mina. I’m surprised Star seeing her supposedly finished tapestry didn’t motivate her to find a different way because she’s Star Butterfly, rebel princess who fights for what’s right and nobody can tell her what she has to do, she finds her own way.

Eddie and River bumbling and telling Mina about the magic sanctuary. I wish River had saved Globgor bc it would really show he can be competent and would also be cute bc dad solidarity

Mina, after being built up as the big bad, was defeated way too easily

Glossaryck, the MHC, (and presumably all of the queens’ spells INCLUDING THE LASER PUPPIES) just. Died. I mean the MHC sucked so oh well about them and glossaryck was kinda the reason this all happened (which btw is very confusing. Why did he give the first queen the wand if he knew all this crap was gonna happen anyways?) so I’m not super sad about him but Star’s spells didn’t deserve that, nor did the other queens’, or the laser puppies!!

The fact that Moon and Star grabbed tha alligators by the eyeballs. I know that this is such a small thing but in the series finale for the main character to still be doing stuff that hurts other characters like that and for it to be treated as a joke...it just sits bad with me. They’ve tried to develop Star, and been mostly successful, but for her to still be doing stuff like this and being a bad girlfriend to Tom and spontaneously deciding that she hates magic and needs to get rid of it no matter what happens to magical creatures and such after she’s supposedly grown so much just seems counterintuitive and bad. Like I swear Star’s my favorite character (bet that’s a surprise with how much I’ve talked about Marco this post) but sometimes it’s so hard to like her it’s annoying

Mina lived. I mean what was the point of that? She’s not gonna learn to not be racist towards monsters and it looked like she got pretty killed by the unicorn in the magic dimension so like. What’s the point of her coming back

All the cruelty towards unicorns. I mean, the firstborn DIED. We saw her SKULL. What the F*CK that’s messed up! And the other unicorns died too, and the dark one also disappeared except for its skull. What was that about?! Were we supposed to just not care bc they’re made of magic? Bc if so that didn’t work

No but seriously it’s so messed up that Star’s unicorn daughter DIED and we saw her SKULL and it’s just treated as a joke what the hell that unnerved me sm

It was very anticlimactic how there weren’t any real challenges to the Butterflies destroying magic. Neither Mina nor the evil unicorn got anywhere close and for the series (not just season but SERIES) finale, you would think there’d be more of a final fight, and more tension/suspense so the final payoff seems more satisfying. Idk I just thought it went way too fast, especially for the actual end of the show. I thought the full time should be used for fighting Mina, not starco development (and I say this as a person who likes starco)

The cheek marks being gone. I know it makes sense with the plot of getting rid of the magic, and because mewmans were originally just humans, but since I didn’t like the magic-being-deleted plot line and because I have some sort of sentimental attachment to the cheek marks apparently, I don’t like that they’re gone

The uncertainty towards Tom/most characters from other dimensions’s fates. Again, I like starco, but even the most die-hard starco shippers probably think that the way characters who weren’t Star or Marco were just written off was unsatisfying, right? In particular, Tom deserves WAAAAAAAY better than he got. And Kelly, is her dimension merged with Mewnearth? Was the vision Ponyhead was describing actually what happened to her?

like im guessing this one is an Important Dragon so thats why he has a name and the others dont, and like. yeah the shouts are. dragon words so it makes sense that they have language but. idk there’s something really odd about “monstrous beasts” and “named creatures intelligent enough to have language” being true of the same thing 

anyway i now understand that there’s actually two options for which guy to follow out of helgen, you can go with hadvar who is an imperial soldier who sympathized with you but still helped lead you to what was supposed to be your death, or ralof who is one of your fellow prisoners and is a stormcloak soldier 

either one leads you along basically the same path and they’re weirdly both from riverwood but don’t seem to know each other??

i didn’t even realize there were two guys calling out to me in the chaos the first time i played. so. medea just blindly followed hadvar because she didn’t see ralof there, hadvar helped her and was kind to her, and she doesn’t understand the politics involved and doesn’t know what she was arrested for in the first place so she feels maybe the imperials had a good reason for wanting to kill her, but still doesn’t trust anyone who leads prisoners to execution without telling them why 

but she’s kinder toward them because of hadvar (and she was so confused and disoriented she doesn’t realize he was one of the main officers involved in the execution either) 

ragweed however followed ralof, saw hadvar but went NNNNOPE FUCK THAT GUY. he’s actually fond of ralof now and is VERY much on a “FUCK THE IMPERIALS” mindset after what they did to him. headcanoning he just kinda got roped into that whole mess like the other thief did

boy needs some better clothes :’) 

for a while i was doing a thing where he’d steal the shoes off every corpse he came across (or created) just to fuck with people like “who’s going around taking all these shoes” but then i got tired of it bc obviously the npcs dont actually notice that happening and it wasnt that funny 

so now his new hobby is stealing every egg he can find. when he gets a house hes just going to have this huge pile of eggs 

hes not an Evil person hes just very very morally suspect and does not have any reservations about stealing from pretty much anyone. doesnt hurt people without cause but Will at any provocation

also one of the first things that happened on this file was me discovering a cave/bandit hideout/whatever this was that i hadnt seen before, and falling in a pit full of khajit corpses specifically, which seems very particularly ominous, 

i was wandering around and came across some of the companions looking over a dead giant and they were immediately mad at me for not helping with it buT THIS WAS ON RAGWEED’S FILE AND HE HADN’T EVEN BEEN TO WHITERUN YET, SO HE DOESN’T KNOW THEM AND ALSO IT WAS DEAD BEFORE I EVEN REALIZED THEY WERE HERE :’) 

and like. he doesnt have a reputation or anything yet nobody knows who the fuck he is except for ralof. who does this “YOU THERE. RANDOM GUY I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. WHY THE FUCK DIDN’T YOU HELP US” like damn you’re not yelling at the farmers for slacking off

Day 7: Why are you assuming I even know how to help you?

Last day of this ficweek. I’m proud of every writer here 💛 I’ll be reading each fic during the next because this has been quite a busy and eventful week. Anyway, I know you’re all amazing.

Another open would take place this night since Gary left to travel this morning, they had only 10 hours to get everything ready. They hide their plans from Gary so he wouldn’t have a chance to stop it. Even Red Shark agreed to help surprisingly. There was only one person left out, well by his own choice.

Matteo said he was too busy with university and his music career, which include Bruno as his manager again. It wasn’t a complete lie, indeed he was pretty occupied, but the real reason was his break up with Luna. He couldn’t understand how she could give up on them.

They were doing great since they started going out again, it took a while before they began to officially date. It was doing well, better than in any of his wild dreams. They skated together every day, often had dinner with her family, Miguel loved to talk about his high school band to Matteo, Monica accepted learning his lasagna recipe – that she will never admit it was better than hers -, they wrote some songs, just a perfect relationship.

Until he received work from the record label, requested to start the recording and making his brand image, he knew this was coming, he signed the deal, he worked for this. But when the time came, Matteo hesitated. Last time it happened, he lost her. He was not ready to break them again, he feared what his career would do to them. On the other hand, Luna decided it for him. His dream should come true they could try. His music career happening didn’t mean they couldn’t make it, right?

Wrong. Apparently, both things couldn’t coexist in her life.

As soon as his meetings, interviews, and album producing started to increase, their time together began to disappear. It was getting harder and harder for Luna to reach Matteo. Yet she didn’t let it get to her, keeping her promise of trying her best, despite Nina’s pity look on her every time Matteo became a topic on a conversation. Her other friends noticed what was happening and stopped asking. In a short time, Matteo wasn’t a subject to Luna anymore. Almost like they were strangers again. When Bruno arrived as his manager again, she lost a bit of her faith but still giving him a shot. Maybe he wouldn’t be that bad this time.

Although on the back of her head kept trying to warn her: It was all happening again, but she brushed it off, ignoring it.

She only couldn’t ignore it when he had an interview where he said he didn’t have a girlfriend. It broke her heart to hear that. Luna was in the manor sitting on the living room watching the live interview on her phone with Simón and Ámbar by her side; gladly her parents were in the kitchen when Matteo confirmed he was single. Simón got up and ran out the door while Luna was comforted by, the last person she ever thought would do it, Ámbar there petting her hair when Luna sobbed in pain. The second time hurt even more than the first one. She thought it was impossible. Luna couldn’t tell who she was more disappointed: Matteo for doing it all again, or herself for allowing this repetition happen.

Now she had to let him go. He needs his career and she needs his happiness. Being in the way of his career wasn’t an option. So she broke up with him, leaving Matteo annoyed, confused, sad.

As the Open’s time neared, the last rearrangements were been made. Luna was in charge of getting the stage ready, setting everything for each performance, then putting up the decoration Yam made. The only chore left was the sound system, connecting the cables, the mic and checking it, but she knew nothing about how to do that, where to connect what.

That’s when she saw Matteo. Not really, she saw Matteo since he came in. She could feel him, her eyes kept falling onto his focused figure leaned on a notebook with a frown adorning his forehead. He was her last option to get her part done without bothering someone else who was already working on the open. Luna had no idea how it would go, she only hoped for the best. Last weeks, they maintained their interaction to the minimum possible.

Maybe this was her chance to see how she’d react to hearing her name in his voice once again.

“Hey, chico fresa.” Luna walked to his spot, her hands getting damp as their distance shortened.  Matteo looked up to her for an instant nodded, then backed his eyes to the notebook. Luna didn’t stop, tho. “Can you help me?”

Matteo’s eyes didn’t leave the paper while he muttered. “Why are you assuming I even know how to help you?” It was more a matter of desire than knowledge. For Matteo, she gave up on them and being near her hurt so not helping her meant not having to deal with the pain that lived in his chest.

“You don’t know what I want help with.” Luna insisted in a low tone. Concealing with the damage his acts were doing while persisting in making him help on the open brought the blank space she was feeling since she left him to burn in her. He was shutting her off.

“What do you need help with?” He questioned fixing his eyes on her but already had the answer to whatever she said on the tip of his tongue. She could ask him either how do airplane fly or how to make a paper airplane and his answer would be the same.

“The sound system. I need…”

“I don’t know how to do that.” He scoffed, not caring enough to mask his lie.

“Of course you do,” Luna replied her hands moving in exasperation. “You worked here, the boys taught you that.” It became a supplication. “Please, Matteo. I don’t want to ruin the equipment or bother anyone. It’s so confusing and I’m almost…”

“Giving up?” Matteo continued when she paused. “Is it too hard that you’re quitting?” There was a sharp tone in his voice, all he was saying was made to hurt her, to make her feel as much pain as he was feeling. “Whoever gave you this task should’ve known better than give something so important, this person should’ve known you’d give up.”

He knew it wasn’t true. Luna was the most determinate person he had ever known, which just made it harder for him to understand the reason she gave up on them, on him. He never saw her back down on anything she put in her head she’d get. Not with a difficult step, never with Ámbar’s provocation, nor anything. But he was so worthless that he wasn’t worth keep trying.

Luna shook her head and crossed her arms. “I won’t talk about that right now.” Meaning she wasn’t ready for talking about it with him, he still couldn’t see the whole picture. She was dizzy from all the emotion his words awaken in her chest. Everything felt wrong. This wasn’t what they were supposed to be. That’s not how she dreamt them to end, she imagined them growing old together, he’d sing to her and she can never get tired of it, they’d tell their grandkids why he is her chico fresa and she is his chica delivery. It was all a sweet illusion, learned to love and would hold in her heart. She turned her back to him, not letting him see the tears streaming down.

“You gave up on us, on me.” Matteo yelled-whispered making Luna immediately look back.

“I didn’t give up you,” Luna stated not minding that he could see her wet face or the tears running down her cheeks. “I believe in you. You can’t have a girlfriend, you have to be available for your fans. That’s what you need.”

“I need you, Luna.” Matteo protested desperately with her tears and words.

That was everything she wanted to hear but she couldn’t accept it. Luna’s chest ached sharply.

“You need your career.” Luna said walking away, leaving Matteo behind. The feeling of missing a part of her, the piece that would always stay with him.

Tbh I’ve read all the books and all the spin offs and I’m still confused as to what tamlins and rhysands true forms are. Idk if it was ever revealed. But I think Rhys said his true form is not just wings but something so horrible he wouldn’t want feyre to see or sth? I have no idea tho. And like the fact that I don’t know that and that I’m so unsure about the whole situation despite loving the books says a lot about the writing. Also I think the author starts a lot of storylines that never get finished. Like what and who were the children of the blessed in acotar? Also so many essentials about the worlds aren’t properly explained. I’d love to know more about how the human world and the fairies coexist, about the social norms and stuff in both worlds, the history, their beliefs… even when she describes powers it’s just “he’s SO powerful, more than anyone else” but what can he actually do? Are there laws in the world or any ends to the power the fairies have? We’ll never know I guess

I admit to my laziness-driven mistake, more than “friendship” I should have said “relationship that’s definitely a friendship but neither of the involved parts seems to have realized just yet”. Friendship was just shorter, tho

I dunno if you follow the manga, but Bakugou and Todoroki are definitely on friendly terms - since the beginning of the training camp arc you hardly ever see one without the other around, and no interaction since has had them actually fighting. Most of their scenes together are made of Bakugou being the usual shit he likes to be and Todoroki using the occasion to master his sass skills, that’s true, but I wouldn’t say that changes the fact that they coexist in a definitely peaceful way (as far as the word peaceful can be used to describe Bakugou, of course) - they make fun of each other with minimal recoil, can fight as a team seamlessly, actually listen to one another even when they don’t agree, while some might argue that it was only to make up for a personal failure Todoroki was, with Kirishima, the one to propose the rescue plan, and in most recent times Todoroki has been treating Bakugou exactly as he would any other friend (and if the way Bakugou acts with Sero and Kaminari is anything to go by, he’s been treating Todoroki as a friend too, I’d say)

Someone in the tags mentioned that Todoroki would probably be more annoyed with Bakugou, but I gotta disagree there too - the fun thing about these two’s relationship is exactly that they’re (literally) like fire and ice. Bakugou yells and insults as he does, Todoroki answers as if they’re having a perfectly civil conversation - it’s super amusing to me? It’s why I love that relationship a lot haha I wouldn’t put Todoroki between Bakugou’s group or Bakugou in Todoroki’s, that’s for sure, but they do have a friendly rivalry going on. Compared to the relationships they both have with a big part of the class, I’d say that the one they share is closer to a friendship than anything else.

(of course from there to having them just chill and talk is a leap, but considering how similar they are in their different types of social awkwardness, I don’t think it’s too farfetched? well, I’ve had Bakugou chill with Jirou and they hardly ever interacted, this was definitely closer to canon than that lol)

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm people don’t think that Bakugou’s quirk is villainous, tho? They think his personality is, not his quirk - as of now the only quirk that’s considered villainous by the canon is Shinsou’s! And that’s only by kids, too - pro heroes saw him and decided he would make a perfect hero! Anyway, as far as Monoma goes I don’t think he’d be considerable villainous, both for quirk and personality - he’s a weird kid, but Horikoshi did say he’s a nice one. Kids might have used to find his quirk annoying or unfair, but villainous is a bit too harsh of a word? Well, he seems to be well integrated in class 1B, so even if he used to have that sort of problem he for sure doesn’t now haha

Cryptic Vs Rakuga Horror

@tyrantisterror, in my eyes, is one of the great horror critics of our generation, and I would say one of his greatest achievements is the existence of the Four Horrors theory. Specifically, it's a hypothesis based on the idea of four primary “Axes” of horror fiction based on the place the horror comes from.

Namely, the horrors of the past (Gothic), horrors of the future/irresponsible-progress (Atomic), the horrors of human rottenness and cruelty (Slasher, tho the issues with that name are for another day) and the horrors of things that are so much more vast and terrible than we could possibly comprehend (Cosmic)

But, I would say there's another axis related to that theory, one that's not quite in the same boat but rather supplemental to it.

Like categorizing library books by author or by subject as TT put it.

And thusly, this is the truth of Cryptic Horror vs Rakuga Horror....

The core difference, of course, which I must emphasize is that while the Four Horrors categorizes the horror in terms of its cause within the narrative, these two categorize them by their means of aesthetic convenyance. And that conveyance is the realistic horror of Cryptic Horror versus the surrealistic horror of Rakuga Horror.

Now, when I speak of Cryptic Horror as “realistic,” I do not mean excluding the fantastical and only keeping the plausible. I mean, the Creepypasta known as The Burgrr Entries goes immensely batshit and weird with such, and David Lynch's weird shit could be slotted into this category as easily as he could the latter (Tho more on that in a bit).

Rather, it's “realistic” in the sense it feels like a real experience, that is; as such an impossible thing would be experienced by a real person at the ground level. It comes with little warning, little if no explanation, more questions than answers, essentially the thing you feel could happen when walking down a dark alley or a dark forest or in an empty Wal-Mart at night.

It presents the horror in the sense that “It could happen to you” and that's perhaps why the idea and its aesthetics has its genesis in stories that were told originally as true.

While, as TT said, most horror stories have always kept a pretense of realism; and there's always been ghost stories of the baffling chronicled around the fire, the true origin I would say is in the sort of “Fortean” stories, named after Charles Fort; who chronicled bizarre; anomalous pheomenon that were documented and real, but also unexplainable.

These spread out into conspiracy theory, urban legends and the cryptid stories from which I gave the genre its name. And I named that because I would say they also spawned its blooming into what could be called a full “thing,” in ways that can be seen in the most wildly prominent of its incarnations, because a lot like fantasy the idea of this as its own aesthetic is relatively recent, thanks to it not really showing that much as an independent “look” in fiction.

And, I would argue, both the medium of found footage film and creepypasta solidified the idea of Cryptic horror as a look, both via the inherent nature of their mediums. The lack of conventional framing in found footage was a perfect vehicle for the versmillitude the genre trades in, and from that versmillitude that sort of profound feeling of paranoia I feel the genre does best (Though that was from a different time).

And, drawing from documentary, it's no wonder it'd draw narratively from real creepy things, such as Blair Witch or; in my mind; V/H/S/2's underrated framing segment for some examples.

Creepypasta, of course, had the feeling of versmillitude just by its sheer embrace of the idea that this is being written by a person from a place of experience, ideally preserved in both the formatting of the text and the level of mystery given. The anonymous and ephemeral nature of the imageboards also has to have helped, along with the decentralized nature of its spread such as in the case of Slender Man especially .

So, if the Cryptic Horror is the horror of Blair Witches, Mothmans and Slendermans, what the hell is Rakuga horror then? Well, that starts with the meaning of the name Rakuga, which is a shortening (as I understand) of the Japanese word Rakugaki, for “childish scribblings,” nonsense if it were.

And, that's what Rakuga Horror is, nonsense horror. It is the horror of the surreal, where everything is in your face impossible, even the world, like the logic of a dream. It may have rules, but those rules are poetic and of the kind no sane person would think up except as a gag or a fit of madness. The aesthetic could be described as generally “fever dream”, a fluid state of liminality.

I would give this style the alternate name “Cartoon Horror,” because that is what it is and what it's been most concentrated in throughout its history, though some early examples like Alice in Wonderland or the works of Winsor McCay are borderline such (Though not horror per-say).

From animation history, Minnie The Moocher and Swing You Sinners from Fleischer Studios are outstanding examples of it, as ar the Heffalumps and Woozles and Pink Elephants On Parade scenes from Disney, even Sally Cruikshank’s Face Like A Frog is a primo example.

But, it's never really been considered horror, perhaps due to how animation; especially the type known as “cartoons” has been treated as the beaten child kept in the basement of filmmaking. Likely because of Western film criticism’s fetish for realism, which is why I would go back in time and beat in Andre Bazin’s face with a shovel if I could, but I digress.

Of course, as animation becomes de-stigmatized, there are more creators than ever using that for their aesthetics, though mostly online given it's the fasted medium for such (Though Gekidan Inu Curry’s work on Madoka Magica captures its aesthetic properties quite well). Don't Hug Me I'm Scared is an excellent example, as is, and Bogleech's webcomic Awful Hospital.

Which leads us to the issues with those categorizations, at least the big one, which is that they mix a lot. For example, Burgrr as I mentioned before is a primo example of truly weird Cryptic horror, and yet it takes place in the same universe as Awful Hospital. And; as I also said before; David Lynch can fit in both, with his dreamlike underbellies to seedy realities.

But, given TT did say that Slasher/Cosmic and Gothic/Atomic Horrors could coexist in the same work, I don't really see that as a disqualification. Horror, like ogres, has layers, and their coexistence does not make them any less aesthetically distinct.

Though, the cliffs notes on the imagery, that's for another post...

This is something of a rough sketch of the idea, so feel free to critique it for my inevitable “smoothed out” version, but that's the gist of it! Hope ya dig it, and hope it’s interesting!

BTW, I don’t quite have a name for the two representative critters above. Anyone got any ideas?

APATHY AND PHYSICAL ISSUES: A LORENZO MATTEUCCI INTERVIEW

Welcome to the first interview on the DE PRESS blog. Expect more to come from both our artists and other exciting voices in publishing, drawings, alt comics etcetera. Our first guest is Lorenzo Matteucci, longtime DE PRESS author with the Hommage series and his new zine, Lavoisier.

Hello Lorenzo, how you doin’?

Before getting into Lavoisier I’m curious about your past experiences. Your curriculum goes from design into illustration, but then your DE PRESS publications are mostly comics.

Yes I wasn’t expecting that too - I was even studying Contemporary Art before all that.

I like to think I was looking for some way to express myself in a more personal way, but I know that I ended up doing illustrations because I want to work as little as possible.

Speaking of which, doing a comic for DE PRESS was quite unusual, I have a troubled, complex and painful relationship with long drawing sessions, I don’t like to keep drawing the same characters in the same stories. My father calls me “Er Lavativo” [*roman slang for “skiver”]

Speaking of your early works - the two issues of Hommage - you did experiment with comics and 3D graphics as well, what’s the reason for all this complex technicalities?

I was making it easier actually! I was really lazy and had some health issues at the time. I had some nerve injuries so basically two fingers in my dominant hand went AWOL. I could still use a mouse with my other fingers so I could do digital drawings and I wanted to dust 3D softwares off.

I did some pages and was quite happy with the results (even tho it was the beginning of a painful process) so I threw Simone (Proietti Timperi) aka Simoncino in the mix. He’s a Tennessee rap expert and we had history together involving some crazy college adventures, like eating Burger King at every lunch break for an entire week.

A great collaboration flourished, we had a lot of fun designing the whole comic together and making up apparently unreal stories.

I think Lavoisier and Hommage share some aspects of this workflow, even though you used a different technique and style. I feel like you keep approaching drawing as a design thing, starting with technical issues and getting creative working on that, does this make any sense?

Yes it does make sense, that’s true. There’s various reasons for this - my studies, my perfectionism, my interest into doing something new. I like choosing paper stocks, checking out the prints, doing things a little different from my usual practice. Self-publishing for me is all about experimenting and leisure.

Lavoisier is certainly less ��comic” oriented than Hommage, but it’s still strongly focused on precise yet subtle narration, how difficult was to achieve this?

I had the story in my mind for a while, but I got to admit that translating that into a series of single illustrations was hard. I also had to pick stuff that I’d like to draw.

Any thoughts on the cover?

Speaking of your regular activity, are you ok about describing it as “freelance illustrator”?

Yeah you could say that.

When you do a freelance work, is there any conflict between your doing personal research as an author and meeting the client’s expectations and/or the client’s desire to just get a certain “style” that he/she likes or feels right for the job?

The sooner you understand “author” and “client” have a hard time coexisting (for debutants especially) the sooner you can work without that weight on your heart.

Everyone’s going to ask for editing and adjustments, from the concept to the final. Sometimes art directors will ask a specific subject to draw. What I prefer to focus on (and keep working on) is my illustration’s recognizability. I care to express my mood and persona and looking at oneself through one’s own work is the funniest, most gratifying aspect of the job.

Right now I think there’s even too much hype and chit-chat around illustration. It’s something of a trend, for better of worse. Where an outsider may see a Never Never Land were you earn a living with your drawings, an insider sees an overcrowded, competitive place, polluted by people with no respect for the craft looking for easy cash.

What are your feelings about the term “conceptual illustration”?

It was all the rage some years ago; I thought it was fit to describe those works where the technical issues were overlooked to focus on expressing some original ideas. Nowadays even the ideas are overlooked and standardized, so it has become an umbrella term for downloading Procreate and spending your time on Instagram I guess.

I fucking called it. Sure, me and most of the rest of the fandom, but still. I was also right about Mind and Heart being a dichotomy though apparently not so much for the rest. The other pairs listed are Hope/Rage, Breath/Blood, Light/Void, and Life/Doom. And while I’m not surprised, I was rather attached to my personal interpretation of Hope/Doom, Blood/Rage, Void/Life, and Light/Breath. Oh well, like I’ve ever been one to be tied down by canon. 

How ‘bout that Rage confirmed for discord and chaos, though? Called it. Blood being bonds was I guess largely accepted by the fandom already, though I based my idea of Rage/Blood as a pair off Rage being discord and Blood being harmony. Insert My Little Pony theme here. 

GOD am I glad to at least have some kind of overarching description of the Time player personality type, though. I felt it was there for the longest time but was never able to put into words exactly what ties Dave, Aradia, Caliborn, and Damara together beyond things like their preoccupations with death. THOUGH SPEAKING OF WHICH, how DO the Megidos square with this? Is it that they found the end of their respective fights? 

And this will be my excuse to keep calling myself a Time player. 

Though that’s not to say I’m not completely up-front about the fact that when I originally took Page of Hope’s Classpect test six years ago (which was at the time the most detailed, in-depth test out there and is probably still is) I scored 100% for both Time and Space. 

And yeah, I’ve probably nurtured the Space side pretty well over the years. 

I also wanna say, by their description of Doom? I’ve chosen my Doom players well. 

And now, the Sign Classes! Looks like these are really just based off the Post-Scratch trolls, as far as I can tell. Someone more versed in astrology is going to have to tell me if the traditional zodiac traits are in there at all. Otherwise - pick the troll you relate to most, I guess? Which is gonna take a lot more thought for me. I dunno, I’m going through them over and over again and none in particular are jumping out at me.

I seem to gravitate towards Bronze, Gold, Lime, Olive, Indigo, Violet and Fushcia. Oh boy, I find half the damn zodiac relatable! This is the part where I kept typing “X is the Biggest Mood though” but continually going back and changing it so good fucking luck in that department, I guess. 

And finally, the Lunar Sway, aka what had me most skeptical about whether or not the writers of this thing had a handle on things. Mostly Prospit. To take it from the top: 

Marked by a flexible optimism, the personalities of Prospit Dreamers are reactive and intuitive. 

Methinks we were looking primarily to the human kids here, but from my Troll Knowledge this isn’t untrue in a broad sense. If you can call Karkat’s early “I am surrounded by idiots and it’s up to me to push them through this” attitude “optimistic”.

They naturally exist in the present, rather than look to the future or obsess over the past. 

Uh... Points at Jade’s meticulous planning with her reminders, at Jane’s oft-overlooked ambitious qualities? Points at Terezi’s E V E R Y T H I N G? 

When making decisions Prospit Dreamers tend to rely on gut instinct and whatever emotions they are experiencing at the moment. This makes them quick to act and reliable in a crisis, but it also can make them capricious. 

Sometimes terminally so? :y I can’t discount the overall impression that they’re pushing that Derse dreamers are more Thinking, while Prospit players are more Feeling, to put it in Myer-Briggs terms, but I’m resistant to the extreme of this idea that Derse and Prospit are purely logic versus emotion. But it does add some clarifying dimension to the observation that Derse dreamers often throw themselves into suicide missions knowing full well they’re going to die, but Prospit players will do the same without even the slightest consideration for the fact that’ll get fucking wrecked. 

They have trouble thinking things through, and their feelings toward specific situations and decisions can change from day to day. 

Don’t call me out like this, guys. 

They solve problems with creativity rather than cold logic, often seeing multiple options with ease and clarity. 

Though they are creative by nature, I feel this must be supplemented with the observation that Space players - who are Prospit dreamers by default - also tend to be straight-forward and more concerned with concrete rather than abstract matters, which trends more towards logic.

Because they generally take things as they come, Prospit Dreamers are less rebellious than they are adaptable-instead of struggling against authority, they will find a way to coexist with it. 

Again, not untrue, but the contrarian in me worries about what broad application of this will do to my dear children. 

Possibly because they are so instinctual and flexible, they like having a defined set of rules-a safety net for their passionate lives. 

This makes sense and actually shines a pretty good light on our Prospit kiddos: now that I think about it, I can name some kind of guiding framework that all of them adhere to in order (at some point, since I’d argue Jade remakes hers when she casts her reminders off) to make their lives make sense - even Vriska, who lives her life like it’s one big FLARP session. 

Naturally trusting, they have trouble with deception or hiding their true selves, and will often worry about what others think of them. The self they project into the world is often not under their control.

Ok, here’s the part I’d heard about and had a problem with. Did we learn NOTHING from Grimbark and Crockertier? Or John’s relentless projection? To say nothing of the argument that Jake’s obliviousness is on some level deliberate obfuscation. It may just be that this observation is written really vaguely in trying to encompass related ideas in a small space. The wording of this makes it sound like Prospit dreamers struggle with subterfuge or self-awareness and this is simply not the case? Especially once you get away from the humans. It might be saying they go one way or the other, that Prospit players either struggle with the concept of deceiving others (blatantly untrue of most of them) or often encounter difficulty because they feel compelled to hide their true self (which is FAR MORE applicable, but doesn’t seem to be the case when you preface that idea with “naturally trusting”). 

You could make the argument that this is saying that Prospit dreamers often run into cases where they’re so willing to avoid dealing with their problems that they’ll even obfuscate from THEMSELVES unconsciously, but that... doesn’t seem to be the case because of the surrounding phrases. I get that this is supposed to be a broad generalization and that few people, if anyone, are going to perfectly embody all these traits, but!! Jumps up and down!! We don’t exactly need more reasons to overlook the Prospit kids’ less explored depths here. 

I kinda went over Derse already when I liveblogged myself taking the test so I guess that ends that. Interesting little experiment, not as superficial as I feared it would be. 

Nobody better be expecting my fantrolls to only use signs from this zodiac though, lol.

and omg i am ALWAYS down to share!!! Hipaali is part of House Telvanni & starts out apprenticed to Neloth, so she already knows something is up with the island, just not what it is. when Miraak sends the cultists after her (about halfway through the main quest, when she knows about Alduin but not what to do about him yet), she chases after them immediately because her pride Will Not Stand for assassination attempts. then when she meets Miraak & figures out that he’s the First Dragonborn, she convinces him to ally with her to defeat Alduin and complete his own revolution in exchange for Not Being Stuck In Apocrypha Anymore and breaks him out...also more or less in accordance with the mod, lmao.

their biggest concern is defeating Alduin, but afterwards...they’re both ambitious and vengeful, so I think they’d go after Ulfric and destroy the Stormcloaks, then use Miraak being the Last True Atmoran and Hipaali being the new leader of the dragons to scrape together what bits of the rebellion weren’t horrifically racist and drive the Empire out of Skyrim as well, although probably more through threats & leveraging than actual violence.

I.....also don’t know how it ends, or at least what happens directly after Miraak becomes king? the biggest question I have is Paarthurnax, bc Hipaali and Miraak aren’t exactly good people...but I also think I could get away with pulling the Blue And Orange Morality card where as far as Paarth is concerned, they’re not enslaving anyone and are allowing humans and dragons to coexist, so therefore they’re good, right? but who actually knows, I have No Idea how much of this is lore friendly either, so uh, high-five!!? lmao

tbh I haven’t come up with a satisfying way to conclude that yet oops After what they pulled, there’s no way Hermaeus Mora is going to just leave it be. He’s going to be a thorn in their sides for the rest of their lives. Nothing they can’t handle, of course— they already beat the odds by escaping with their free will and their sanity intact, but it’s hard to sleep peacefully at night knowing a Daedric prince has it out for you.

Rowan does introduce him to the dragons— Miraak definitely butts heads with Paarthurnax based on their ideals alone. As for the rest of them I think Miraak would try to,, assert himself over them as an authority figure and they would just,, Not Be Having It. They answer to Rowan, not to him.

Afterwards? I meant to mention this last post but Miraak asks Rowan to help him hunt down the remaining dragon priests in Skyrim and Solstheim, putting an end to what remains of the old Dragon Cult. (And giving him a lot of closure.) Then? I think they’d travel a while. Maybe get roped into some war or another (As commander of the Blades and over the dragons I think Rowan is too powerful not to get pulled into some political BS eventually lmao). Eventually they’ll return to Skyrim— their home— and raise a family together.

Another headcanon of mine is that Dragonborns live longer than your average person already— and that lifespan is only extended as they absorb more dragon souls, so they have a long life ahead of them.
