I love how much Lucullus can't stand Pompey, and also this
Pompey the Great: A Political Biography, Robin Seager
with something from this thrown in for extra flavor
Crassus and Pompey, on the other hand, ridiculed Lucullus for giving himself up to pleasure and extravagance, as if a luxurious life were not even more unsuitable to men of his years than political and military activities.
Plutarch, Lucullus

HOW AM I JUST LEARNING THAT THIS MOD EXISTS.
This is an absolute well of prosthetics (and eyepatches! for male and female models!!), both serious and silly.
#after years of desperately searching for modded non-dwemer prosthetics.... FINALLY.#skyrim mods#skyrim#i don't know that i can add it to 'recs' as it doesn't have an english translation for the latest version (yet)#so i haven't played with it and can't speak to how it works#but i can definitely see borrowing some assets from here!

Various inhabitants of rivendell
(inspired by @thesummerestsolstice here and here)
#silm#silmarillion#lotr#rivendell#maglor#erestor#i hope you do not mind me borrowing garthaglir like a particularly cool rock on the playground#i imagine glorfindels arrival at rivendell like#he walks into the library and runs into garthaglir#both of them scream#but then later glorfindel sat him down and taught him to do fancy braids#now they are friends#later he was part of the redhorn pass search and rescue team out of loyalty to the people who took him in#(bonus points if he was originally a caradhras orc...)#he has joined glorfindel in Team Hair Down During Battle and elrond is so tired#although later he teaches elrond the local dialect of black speech#they spend weeks in the library transcribing texts and poring over the etymology of particularly quenya-derived words#orcs are kind of undead (see: aure entuluva battle) and elrond is weird and somewhat maiarin#somebody eventually forces them to go take a break after three weeks of nonstop linguistics-bonding#feanors ghost is Proud#(he also is glad that erestor eventually befriended lindir because hey! thats one grandkid who didnt disown everyone)#the one old feanorion and thingols guard both refuse to modernize their armor#elrohir is like 'you know mail is a thing now right?? leg armor has existed for two ages and youre still wearing your fancy battle robes'#to which both of them will yell something only vaguely understandable about modern armor being poorly made#and then proceed to fight about whose armor was actually more effective at the dagor nuin giliath#(theyre that old)

90s couture vs dishonored brigmore witches
#dishonored#delilah copperspoon#brigmore witches#brigmore aesthetic#all photos from dior fall winter 1997#or 1998#except for the second which is martine sitbon#whats SUPER interesting to me is with the dior 97 fw show you can really see where details have been borrowed#and reworked to make sense for a videogame character#eg.the same blue shade and cut for the brigmore mook's jacket design#but the corsetry lacing detail seems borrowed from the second dior dress (presented first on the runway)#if youre unoffended by a bit of nip. search for shalom harlow 1997 on this hellsite#she's got flowers up her body in that iconic outfit too#but. you're welcome#i think this is the last of my dishonored fashionposting btw#intrigues me it does

Found an old copy of 'George IV: A Life in Caricature' for $10 and only $30 shipping, so a giant hardcover coffee table book for only $40! And, best of all, it's second-hand, so I'm not giving money to Kenneth Baker! Win win!
#i used to borrow this from my uni's fine arts library#google image search is now failing me so i need the actual book#i always wonder why he chose this one for the cover#i guess because it's pro rather than anti prinny because tory lords be like that?

Who has the bigger dumbass energy (as in they’re not dumb but they are a dumbass)
Propaganda under the cut
Kutner: terrible at the cover story. Keeps blowing himself up to help patients. Bets on everything. Overall chaos energy.
Chase: his password was password. Masters canonically calls him a dumb whore. Is brilliant but also gives off vibes like he’s not quite sure what’s going on half the time.
#gifs borrowed from google search#will try to loop back and credit later so sorry#someday I will have my own homemade gif repository#house md#lawrence kutner#robert chase#poll wars#ship wars

how was john ashley related to elizabeth? she called him kinsman but afaik they weren't blood relations? something like james boleyn's wife's relative? also, is he the john ashley asked about margaret douglas in july 1536? i found it interesting they waited for "lady boleyn" to leave. i'm guessing that's james's wife? bc anne didn't like her as i understand (idk why?) but not enough she wasn't allowed at court and let her be close to anne's crowd if not in it. i just find it interesting she didn't like anne and spied on her but elizabeth took her relatives as her own when she didn't need to
"From its inception, Elizabeth's household employed many of the princess' maternal kin. The first to serve as steward was Sir John Shelton; his wife Lady Anne—the paternal aunt of Anne Boleyn—was also employed in the household as the chief gentlewoman of the Privy Chamber. Elizabeth's first governess, Margaret Bryan, was distantly related to the Boleyns (being the half-sister of Anne Boleyn's mother). John Ashley, a Boleyn relative by the marriage of an aunt, joined the household sometime before 1540. Weak as these blood ties might seem to the modern reader, they weighed seriously with Elizabeth herself; for example, when John Ashley was arrested during the Seymour crisis of 1549, the princess interceded on his behalf, asking that he be released "for he is my kinsman"—even though his relation to her consisted of nothing more substantial than the marriage of his maternal aunt to the brother of Elizabeth's maternal grandfather [...]"
+
"Astley was also referred to as Ashley. John Astley's mother was Anne Wood, whose sister, Elizabeth, married James Boleyn. This made James [by blood] and Elizabeth [by marriage] the aunt and uncle of Anne Boleyn."
+
"But Anne could not just choose friends and allies as her ‘ladies of presence’, because Henry allowed several career courtiers to transfer from Katherine’s service. Lady Elizabeth Boleyn, Sir James’s wife, had always gravitated towards Katherine, as did Lady Mary Kingston, the Constable of the Tower’s wife, and Margaret Coffyn, the wife of Anne’s Master of the Horse. Lady Jane Calthorpe, although also linked by kinship ties to Anne, had done a five-year stint as Princess Mary’s governess. Jane Ashley, one of Katherine’s maids, served Anne and Jane Seymour before marrying Sir Peter Mewtas. Another, Margery Horsman, whom Holbein represents as slim and demure, stayed at court until 1537, when Sir Michael Lyster took her as his second wife." Hunting the Falcon: Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn & the Marriage That Shook Europe, John Guy & Julia Fox
#anon#hope that's helpful <3#as far as john ashley...i think it's as much the maternal relation as it is that he's kat (champernowne) ashley's husband#that created that affinity and affection#but it doesn't seem that he had a 'negligible' connection to anne either necessarily#they were close enough that he had borrowed money from her; it's one of the outstanding debts that is archived after her execution#and if you're searching the archives there's different spellings#john astely but also#john asheley

I'm again sad at how expensive academic textbooks are.
#it's a good thing the Internet Archive is up#however I don't know when it goes belly up again and I don't always want to hog the only physical copies from the library all the time#*sigh*#I may need to buy a book or two - library is great for queries and searching for materials#but once you're sure you need the book on a regular basis (and not only one specific section of it)#it feels silly to borrow it again and again all the time#and if someone else needs them and there's only one copy available that's even worse#I'm not sure how Oxford Press's books are more expensive in an e-book's form anyway#maybe it's due to them being sold by completely different distributors#but come on almost 50 pounds per a paperback copy? It feels a little excessive

its important to watch a new movie or read a new book sometimes. largely because 1) its nice to experience all the art this world has to offer but also 2) you might be able to find new scenarios to imagine your OCs in
#it gets the cogs turning if ur imaginary scenarios get stale#wait did anyone else do this. when i was a kid i played with my toys in the very storytelling heavy style#like every toy was a character type thing. ten million large spanning melodramatic stories of epic proportions with my littlest pet shops#like that was the type of play i liked. and i would#sit in front of the TV with whatever playing half watching cartoons#or watching some kids movie on vhs borrowed from the library back when they still had tapes#and the whole time i would be playing with my toys. seeming more engrossed in the story among my toys than the movie i was watching#but i WAS watching the movie i was just using it largely as a. jumping off point. to make up stories about like#my lps cat who can see ghosts and her search for her long lost twin sister or something#Oh god and when i was a little older like 10 years old making ms paint animations age#whenever i was watching a movie with like famiy or in class or whatever and maybe it was a little boring at parts#i would like. start focusing on the score only and just imagine my own sparklewolf OCs to it instead of paying attention#my dad often fondly remembers watching avatar in theatres with the whole family and looking over to me and seeing me mentally GONE hfkjdfhs#mother and older brother were pretty engrossed with the effects and visuals and i was like. eyes glazed over staring into space#imagining blue wolves with anime hair like :) my dad thought it was very funny. he cant judge the reason he was looking around was because#often hes more interested in watching other people react to a movie than the movie itself LOL we are cut from similar cloths..#i still dont remember a thing about that movie. but the score wasnt bad HJKDBJFKLSHJFDs#but yeah i dunno. watch a horror movie. think about putting your ocs through the horrors. thats how ive lived my entire life

the adhd gremlin is having a field day with me today
#first i was looking for my file bc i had to fix my crochet needle again. found it at some point under my bed (not where it belongs)#so i also decided to get deeper into the search for my (somewhat fancy) hair clippers. and restructured the extension cable#infrastructure in my room in the process#didn't find the clippers tho but hey at least i cleaned my room a bit#which brought me to remember a setlist i still hadnt put in its place on my closet. so i went to look for some tesa#and in its place. where i store my crafting supplies. were the clippers#didn't find tesa tho so i borrowed some from my roommate#spike spoke
