OBT Themed Emotes!

Made a few OBT themed discord/stream emotes for personal use, but thought I'd go ahead and share them with folks! Free to use, yadda yadda

("Woo, where have you been? The ask blog is a desert :(" I've been taking more time offline to work on landscaping projects! aka just a pond. but it's a cool pond :) entering my dad yardwork era..... these emotes were just to ease back in to drawing after spending a while away from it lol)

I made another take on a possible champion for pmd: on borrowed time, i actually had these drawings done for a while but didn’t publish them because i didn’t have la name for the character yet, but in the end i named them terra.

They are nonbinary and a pikachu with noivern traits, specifically their chest fur and the blue spots in their ears which they can use to produce Sonic waves to detect objects or pokemon,

They are zygarde’s champion, around 20-23 years old(same age as my clara and lian, my previous fan made champions) and take their Job very seriously, defending the ecosystem of dungeons, the move they would use from zygarde would be either thousand waves or core enforcer, and their “passive” would be placeing something similar to zygarde’s cells in the sense that they can use them as cameras to keep an eye on other places, but without being able to use them to become stronger like zygarde’s form change

They wouldn’t be part of any guild, and would be a wild pokemon that lives on a dungeon like malachi was before wanting to join te guild, i‘ll explain why i chose this in the next paragraph

I actually have already imagined them meeting team maelstrom, they would see rune and inigo joining julius in beating up wild pokemon but not seeing when they tried to stop him from damaging the perfect Apple tree, and adding to that the damage done to the dungeon thanks to julius’ noxious gas combo poisoning the perfect apple tree( i think malachi mentioned that on the ask blog)they would actually be antagonistic towards team maelstrom, Mainly to rune and inigo, but they would become more of an Ally after getting more details of the situation.

i loooove obt! one of my favorite parts is how you give pokemon with parents of different species characteristics of both :o ! is there a way you go about it? how do you decide what would be a good fit? what aspects do you look for to combine? how do you avoid the pokemon from looking too much like a fusion pokemon, but more like still recognizably one pokemon but with other characteristics?

Generally, the number one thing I look at when designing a character for a PMD comic like OBT is maintaining silhouette and notable traits. It's a very rough estimate I'm kinda pulling out of nowhere, but I think somewhere around 80% of the original species should shine through, and then 20% can be relegated to all those extra fun traits.

So for a character like Inigo, my first go-around with his design looked something like this:

Which while he has the notable traits of Nidorina and Kangaskhan, he was almost entirely missing the silhouette. Plus, the yellow doesn't really help sell "Kangaskhan" since they aren't a standout part of the design. I think the headplate and the pouch do a lot more heavy lifting for the design. So for his first appearance, I nudged him closer to the original Nidorina colors and gave him the Kangaskhan pouch.

And later on, I nudged him towards having more of that Nidorina and Kangaskhan heft in his design- they are by no means dainty looking pokemon!

For Dielle, I wanted to keep her heritage a bit more muddled intentionally. She's a fluffy Meowth, and she has electricity, but where does she get it from? Well for that I turned to her instinctive behavior in battling... Remember this scene in Chapter 3?

She's not quite as dramatic since she didn't inherit nearly as much of that power, but the hints are still there!

Usually my thought process for choosing which pokemon to pair together is something along the lines of: - Do I have too many hybrid pokemon currently? (Yes this is a consideration lol, but the next few steps might make me change my mind) - Are there reasons for a character to not be a hybrid? (Based on worldbuilding, background, if it would just muddle the story... For example, I originally intended for Moxie to be part Marowak, but I decided to keep her as a vanilla Nidoqueen so Inigo's heritage wouldn't get too confusing as our first clear introduction to a hybrid character.) - Are there pokemon with type similarities or design motifs that would play well together? - Does it look cool?

And finally, I make sure not to combine more than two pokemon at once. Maybe I can do some little markings or give them some moves from a distant relative or another parent to hint at something else in the mix, but if you add too much to the pot it's gonna be hard to pick out those added traits.

And then if I decide to go through with a design, I take all those points into consideration while working on it! But a lot of time I kinda go with my gut. Like for Julius, when Sun and Moon were announced (all the way back during preboot OBT days), I always thought Lycanroc's midnight form looked a lot like Skuntank's cool hair! So I just smashed them together.

Sometimes, I just throw stuff at a wall to see what sticks. Which is what I did for Grovyle! He was originally going to be part Chikorita, but I wanted to go with something more visually interesting with his design.

And some pokemon only have distant ancestry implied! Wigglytuff has a Clefable grandparent, which manifests on him as star-shaped markings. (What's that? Clefable doesn't have markings? I like to think of it as theming lol)

But sometimes, I just like to mash my favorite pokemon together! Like this character who will show up someday- I won't show an actual image of them until they show up, but in the meantime you can enjoy the party sprite and try figuring out the species here!

Hi Wooled, have you ever considered selling adopts or done so in the past? Both pokemon and especially original designs would interest me a lot (personally) because I really like your colorful simple design style! Thanks for your time!

// I've been picking up on doing adopts again! You can see some of the previous sets I did here on DA, and now they're making an appearance on my Ko-fi store! I fell out of doing them for a while because they often wouldn't get bought for a long period of time, and it was tiring constantly checking to see if anyone had offers. But now that I just auto-sell them through a storefront rather than through a Paypal invoice (and they've generally been picking up in popularity again), I've been more motivated to come up with new designs! One of my favorite recent adopt sets had the theme "doppelgangers", with adopts that were based off of potential designs the OBT cast could've had if things shook out a little differently. (They sold pretty quickly- but I might do a similar set in the future!)

One thing I'd like to get into with adopts is maybe auctions- but I'd run up against the "monitoring listings" issue that made me lose steam in the past. I haven't been able to find any site that supports auctions on behalf of sellers for digital products other than like... eBay. Which doesn't feel like the appropriate place for them. If any of y'all know of something appropriate, feel free to let me know!

My next adopt set is planned to be a pretty big one, involving a particular fluffy fave...

Malachi, I think you would be a good architect. Would you ever consider doing that? If not, then what else would you do aside from that or being on an exploration team?

Malachi: Maybe? But I think I like studying a wide variety of topics, and architecture would mostly be a lot of math and planning.

Rune: Sure, but uh, wouldn't all that general knowledge help with building stuff? Like, pokemon come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. And you have an uncanny knowledge of a billion different types of pokemon, so you could probably come up with ways to accommodate everyone.

Malachi: Hmm... I dunno, I think for now I just like being in an exploration team!

Not really a question, but I like how there’s a small group of people here asking about who’s in Malachis tribe hoping to learn more about future events and characters without saying it basically. It’s like playing go fish. Sorry just thought it was a little silly. Could be mistaken but it’s my head-canon and I will do as I please.

Fun question for anybody who's able to answer, is it possible for someone to be the Champion of multiple Legendary Pokemon? Or would the extra power/abilities granted by the bonds be too much for a Pokemon's body to handle?

Requiem: You hit the nail on the head! The sheer power alone would not bode well for the champion. That, and I suppose with the purpose of champions being someone who services their patron, it'd be quite risky to put all the eggs in one basket, so to speak. It'd be quite unfortunate if some ill fate were to befall a champion belonging to five different hands. Imagine all the paperwork.

Will the comic follow the postgame of EOS, or stop after temporal tower?

// I've probably said before on..... one of the billion sites I frequent, but I do plan on doing the postgame! I even have an extra set of stipulations before I consider the run "complete", which is that I need to obtain the seven treasures.

That said, I don't want to write off the possibility of OBT ending after Temporal Tower completely- this is a loooooong project, and I can't guarantee I'll still be in the same position 10 years from now for comic-making that I am currently (whether that be mental, physical, or financial). I'd rather have a complete story that wraps up at Temporal Tower than an incomplete one that ends at the Manaphy arc. But hey, I've made it 10 years so far! What's another 10 more?

Malachi I have to know, do wailords integrate into surface culture?

Malachi: I don't know about Wailords specifically, but a lot of pokemon avoid their final evolution because it'd simply be too difficult to integrate into a lot of society. I have heard about a town on another continent, called The Land of Giants, where the infrastructure is massive to accommodate pokemon of larger body types. The stairs there are so tall that most pokemon my size probably couldn't even climb a single step!

Are there any other spoken languages other than common? What do they sound like?

Malachi: There are! Though due to how different vocalizations can be between different species, they tend to be localized within small groups of pokemon that share similar mouth structures. My tribe back home has a language that just translates to "The Plains' Language" in common, and it's quieter than common speak so it's used for things like hunting. Most of the tribe consists of mammals, and combining that with electrical pulses that run over our tongues we can create unique sounds that don't get picked up in common.

Er, that's the other thing with languages- common just happens to be how pokemon communicate due to our aura. When we speak, we're usually making physical noises- which are picked up by the ears (or comparable organ), and translated by the aura running through our neural pathways in an instant. To try coming up with a unique language that won't get immediately translated is difficult, and usually you need to incorporate some unique part of your biology to do it.

The translation of common is an automatic process, which means even newly born pokemon can grasp a few words here and there. But with a weak aura, the body prioritizes the translation through your brain, rather than the vocalizations of the mouth. This is probably why Rune was able to understand me, but not speak for herself. A tiiiny amount of aura left in her body gave her just enough stability to hear what other pokemon were saying.

I really like a pokemon mystery dungeon comic called “on borrowed time” and I made some characters based on it

SPOILERS: THIS POST WILL SPOIL A LOT OF PLOT POINTS OF THE COMIC, IF YOU WANT TO READ THE COMIC, FIRST READ IT AND THEN COME BACK TO THIS POST,

in this comic, pokemon get some physical traits from the species of their parents, and some other pokemon can be chosen by a legendary to be their champion, so I made a few characters based on what I imagine the champions of some legendaries could be like.

So to start this, we have a characters I made called Lian, he is a buizel with some relicanth traits like the fins on his arms and the many brown spots on his body, in this case, lian is kyogre’s champion, with his vest being made based on kyogre’s colors, as for his personality, he is usually very kind to others and helps other pokemon safely traverse the sea, i like to think that alongside Champions being able to use their asigned legendary’S signature move, they also have some sort of passive ability, for example, lian could control the waves of the sea around him, making them calm to make traversing that área safer.
