I’m looking for more songs to put on my playlist for a character and it’s just the strangest mix.
Like I’ve got To Build a Home and Sixteen Tons on there followed shortly by Hot to the Touch, Cold on the Inside and a new favorite Hamms in a Glass.
Cade’s whole arc is just kind of all over the place, though, so I guess it makes sense. Stuck under someone’s thumb and desperate for her own freedom, so full of hope despite it all that she’s pinned as naive. She falls in love for the first time without even realizing it just as her life starts spiraling fully out of her own control. She’s spent years currying favor with the rich and powerful, gaining favors for leverage, just to end up spending them all in a frantic attempt to save the lives of the handful of people she’s grown to love and care for. Every step she takes further from her patron’s grasp brings her closer to understanding that he had larger, more powerful masters of his own.
She is angry and terrified and so, so tired of being forced into corners that put her life at risk. She wants so badly to believe there’s good in people to the point where she consistently overlooks possible bad intentions. She has so much faith in a world that’s quickly closing in on her.
Idk I just love her so much but my god is it hard to make her playlist cohesive in any way.
#she is going to Veronica mars her way out of the end of the world if it’s the last thing she does lol#she’s also so sure she’s the chosen one and keeps throwing herself into danger because no one else will/can#I’ve finally made it to book two where she’s really getting in over her head with her magic Ivy League secret societies#she’s about to make so many mistakes dear god#also her girlfriend is still not fully convinced she’s not the trickster god at this point which I find both heartbreaking and hilarious#can I just rant about Cade and Manon for like ever because their dynamic makes me so happy#my writing#cadence melarky#is writblr or whatever still a thing? because I could use another hour or two on this playlist 😅

Do you have a ludography for Eureka? If so, what games are on it?
Yes we very much do! Here it is, straight from the rulebook.
Inspirations
Though Eureka is an original TTRPG built from the ground up to suit the particular needs of our vision, that doesn’t mean we don’t stand upon the shoulders of giants. Below is some media that either served as inspiration for Eureka, or could at least serve as some inspiration to you for what sort of stories Eureka is best at telling.
TV & Movies
Being Human
The Big Sleep (1946)
Columbo
Doctor Who
Friday the 13th
Halloween
Hard Boiled (1992)
James Bond
Knives Out/Glass Onion
Kolchak: The Nightstalker
Laura (1944)
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Midsummer Murders
Murder, She Wrote
Scooby-Doo
Scream (1996)
The Third Man (1949)
Twin Peaks
Veronica Mars
What We Do in the Shadows
The X-Files
Video Games
Disco Elysium
Blood (1997)
DUSK
Gabriel Knight
Hitman
Hotline Miami
L.A. Noire
Max Payne
Resident Evil
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Silent Hill
Tomb Raider
Books & Comics
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Dick Tracy
Harrow County
Metro 2033
The works of Agatha Christie
The works of H.P. Lovecraft
Tabletop Games
Call of Cthulhu
Delta Green
Monster of the Week
Warhammer 40,000[1]
Advanced D&D, 2nd edition[2]
[1 sidebar] Warhammer 40,000 may seem like an odd pick, but it actually loosely inspired parts of the combat system of Eureka, like how it makes many inaccurate shots better than one highly accurate shot. It also lends Eureka the idea of providing bullet point summaries after each section. The “Command Point” mechanic in more recent editions of Warhammer 40,000 also served as some inspiration for the Eureka! Point mechanic in Eureka.
[2 sidebar] Meanwhile, AD&D 2nd edition, unlike D&D post-3rd-edition, is a game that is focused on travel and surviving a dungeon more so than fighting and killing everything in it. Despite that, the game has mechanically complex combat rules, and Eureka also does for similar reasons - if combat is going to be dangerous, it also needs to be deep and tactical.

I'm sorry what????? They think they can influence Tim! As a fellow 300 survivor I think you can agree Tim gives zero fucks. Do they realize the ego of a show runner? I don't think Tim even likes us. I only have confidence because he loved Oliver and created Buck, then looked at Ryan and said I want him. And hey let's give them a kid. Buddie will have a HEA because that's the story he wants to tell. I have no doubt if he didn't love them like he does he would bellarke them just because he was annoyed at us one day.
No but literally, like we had to survive Jason actually punishing us. He actively was trying to punish the bellarke fans as much as he could. You look at the way that he treated Bellamy at the end of the show just because he was fucking annoyed with us. And the fact that he brought Lexa back just to rub it in more. Tim said it before that he writes Buck and Eddie for himself. We're just along for the ride, Tim will do what he wants and if people annoy him he will blow things up. You know surviving the 100 as a bellarke/Bellamy fan we know what it's like to have a showrunner actively hate us. Jason hated us and he was like "you know what fuck you" and just destroyed his own show because of his ego. And considering that Bob and Elisa said that they were told bellarke would end up together like the book, he literally threw away the plan because we annoyed him too much. They think that a couple hundred people being annoying social media for a few weeks, because their numbers are already completely down, we'll get them their way. Yo if us being annoying worked buddie it would have been married by now. It's so fucking funny that they think that they have any influence. The audience has no power whatsoever. I think it was Veronica Mars that the showrunner made an extra season just to make as many fans mad as possible a few years ago. Tim is doing this for himself, if he cared about the criticism he would have changed things and he's not. The ego of a showrunner is all that matter and they think that Tim is going to allow a guy who literally hijacked his story for personal gain, who was literally selling his IP, to control the narrative because a few people sent a couple emails to ABC. That guy is not going to do what they want, if they keep this up he might do the exact opposite. Jason hated us, you want to know what it's like to be a fan who watching the narrative change because of fan reaction be at the 100 fan in 2019/2020, but that was punishment. They're not gonna get what they want like this.

Long Live Evil
By Sarah Rees Breenan
I read this book in less than a day. I can’t remember the last time I was able to do that. Not just because of grow up time committments, but because 7 years of graduate school turned reading into work. And yet this book felt like a much needed vacation. Which is NOT to say it’s a nice story full of nice people navigating the small stakes of daily life. No, it’s the opposite. Dark and bloody, this book is metal as hell! You can hear the screaming ghouls from the ghoul pit. (They built a palace next to a pit of the undead! The “heroes” did that). This Sam Rami and Katherine Kurtz, Veronica Mars with a bit of Phantom of the Opera thrown in for good measure. Its funny and extravagant and the plot races to the end.
Sarah also comes at me where I live. She knows the tropes I like, partly because she introduced me to half of them during my formative years (thank you forever for Diana Wynne Jones). And she executes those tropes in ways that make me scream (you decide if I was happy or anguished).
It’s also about real suffering. I won’t say much on this front but it begins with two sisters at the hospital in a cancer ward. She had me crying by page 10. I was crying a few times. (They’re sisters dammit!)
I’m so excited to see where the story continues. The heroine has already promised that things get really messed up in the sequels. I can’t wait.

Hi, I've never really contacted any authors before, but I love Aetherbound so much I figured I needed to. Pendt was written as such a relatable character, and I absolutely ADORED Fisher and Ned. I can't wait for the sequel to come out in June. I'm about to start reading Exit, Pursued by a Bear, as A Winter's Tale is my favorite play, and Veronica mars is my favorite TV show. Thank you so much for writing that wonderful book, I loved it so very much! - Sawyer
Hi! There isn't a way to answer this privately, so, uh, please tell me if you need me to delete it. :)
ANYWAY, thank you! I was in an extremely bad place when I wrote Aetherbound (summer of 2020, enough said), and I was worried that I would never love it and neither would anyone else, so every time someone reaches out to me about it, my heart heals a little bit.
Also, enough people loved it that Penguin let me write the second one, which is GREAT NEWS for everyone, but ESPECIALLY if you like Ned. SKY ON FIRE comes out in July, and you can preorder it now, wherever books are sold (though preferably you'd go to your local Independent bookstore). You can also request it from your local library, because most libraries have request forms and genuinely love it when their community requests books!

name ⏤ kirby sloane . label ⏤ the grounded bird . age ⏤ twenty6 occupation ⏤ receptionist @ town hall . zodiac sign ⏤ scorpio . gender + pronouns + orientation ⏤ cis woman + she / her + pansexual . inspired characters ⏤ veronica mars , deena johnson , corey mason , kirby reed , natalie scatorccio , haley james scott , sofía herrera , ronnie miller
everybody hates kirby's mom - well , everyone in red creek . imagine gale weathers at the beginning of the first scream movie except more fame hungry and meaner and wearing ugly shoes . that was sinclaire sloane , one of the many reporters that tried to capitalize on the murders in town all those years ago . she had a connection to the place as she had grown up there and returned not long before they began , after she had gotten pregnant with kirby . once she saw a chance to put her journalism degree to use , she did and thus , she drew the ire of everyone in town .
while she went on her book tour , kirby was left with her dad , who had long since divorced sinclaire and was living as just another regular citizen . he worked all day as a plumber and spent his nights in front of the tv , watching sitcoms and drinking beers . kirby was left on her own , for the most part . she liked it better that way anyways .
the murders always hung over kirby's head because of what her mom did for a living . once everyone stopped caring about red creek , she moved onto other murders in other small towns , while kirby actively did everything in her power to avoid even thinking about the events . she didn't even watch horror movies .
her childhood was pretty lonely , she learned to take care of herself quite well so by the time she was in middle school , she was mostly self sufficient . she washed her own clothes , cooked her own food , signed her own permission slips , biked to and from school until she turned sixteen and taught herself how to drive by taking her dad's car out on the road late at night . then , she just drove her mom's long abandoned vw cabrio whenever she needed .
when she got into college and left town to move to california , where she attended ucla and studied history , kirby finally livened up a bit . she partied with her newfound friends , went to the beach as often as possible , and felt like she was actually living for the first time ever , even getting herself a best friend . she even dyed her hair blonde !
six years later , a tragedy struck kirby ( it's her secret shhhh ) and she came running back to red creek . it was the only other place she knew to go . her dad had moved away six months prior and her mom was doing some fuck ass podcast and she needed somewhere to be so kirby settled in a tiny apartment above a store in town , getting a job at town hall and trying to convince herself that it would only be temporary - that was two years ago .
now she's just praying that her mom doesn't try to come back to town … oh and that no one else gets hurt , of course .

Hello!
If you’re not here, ignore this, but if you are, I present you this or thats for a nice ask. Elaborations welcome but not required
Only write 1k fics or only write 100k fics?
Crunchy green grapes or mangoes?
Tarlos getting a dog or tarlos getting a cat?
Reading smut on the elliptical or on public transport?
Charlie Swan or Billy Tyson?
Comfort movie, comfort show, or comfort book?
JEN! I LOVE THIS AND THAT ASKS! (pls note expression of excitement, i'm not saying you could learn from the best, but i'm saying-) i actually have an ask game saved in my drafts that i'm itching to play because it's based on something similar, so thanks for reading my mind🧍♂️
1. 1k fics or 100k fics? look. it would be better for everyone me if i wrote 1k fics. but i know myself. it has to be 100k. besides, i couldn't leave @three-drink-amy alone in the overwriting club.
2. fuck you (affectionate) with your crunchy green grapes, i'll never get over that. i pick mango because grapes are a tummy hurt culprit (even though i love them).
3. i know you're setting me up, but i'm cat man carlos all the way (and i know you agree with me because lucky in meet you after dark is EVERYTHING to me). like he doesn't hate dogs or anything, in fact i think he likes dogs. but carlos would just vibe with a cat so well (makes sense, tk being a feral stray, after all). i co-sign @liminalmemories21 most recent comment on the rainbow fish. we're drivers of the cat-owner-carlos train, everyone hop aboard!
4. smut on the elliptical is my go to but i will say i have a new workout regime and the elliptical is sadly no longer my friend (which is also why i'm reading a lot less fic these days). so i guess i'm gonna have to find another quasi-inappropriate place to read smut.
5. nice trick question. billy tyson and charlie swan are the same person and we all know it (charlie swan having turned into a vampire and moved to...texas (?) as part of his immortal cover story).
6. comfort movie used to be v for vendetta which is not comforting at all, i just love it. it's probably set it up. comfort show is veronica mars (lone star if i only watch tarlos/126 funny scenes and not the rescues because they stress me out). comfort book is rwrb, hands down.
thanks, jen this was a super fun ask! i wanna send people the three comforts now because i'm so intruiged as to their answers! note to the people: please jump in!

Book Review 18 – Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir
This is the first in the giant pile of shorter books and novellas I’ve been powering through over the last three weeks to catch up with my extremely aspirational ‘read and review 60 books in 2023’ new years resolution. It’s also possibly the only thing longer than a short story I’ve listened to in audiobook format in, like, a decade? (and that was one of the Veronica Mars spinoff novels).
All to say I may have rushed this one a bit more than I should have to properly appreciate it, and definitely didn’t retain as much from listening to it as I would from reading it. So this is going to be shorter and probably sloppier than previous reviews.
And with all those disclaimers out of the way – this was such a fun fucking book.
The basic premise is that a witch has kidnapped a princess and locked her at the very top of her tower until a prince fights his way up forty floors of monsters (as is the done thing among witches). Unfortunately, this time the witch has rather outdone herself, and the diamond-scaled dragon she has to on the ground floor (putting the most expensive monster on the ground floor being the sort of artistic, avante-garde move this witch wanted to try) turns out to be really quite excellent at the job of prince-slaying. So it’s left to Princess Floralinda, with the variably voluntary help of a stranded fairy by the name of Cobweb, to fight her way all the way down the tower and free herself.
I’ve always really loved the whole fractured fairy tale genre when it’s done with the right sort of sense of humour, and Muir is just perfect at it. Dry and sardonic without ever really tipping all the way into meanspirtedness, and always playful and willing to indulge in a bit of absurdity. Listening to it as an audiobook really did help as well, I think – the narrator was just a delight, and had an amazing sense of timing and delivery for most of the jokes.
I know I say this about altogether too many things, but the whole novella honestly reminded me quite a lot of the old adventure games I played as a kid? Both the tone and just the fact that so many problems required the ruthless exploitation of the automatically regenerating bread, orange and water the witch had left Floralinda with. ‘Use bread knife and fire on curtain rod to make a spear you can use to fight the goblins with’ just very much seems like the sort of thing that would end up in a GameFAQs walkthrough, you know?
Speaking of ruthless exploitation – Cobweb and their interactions with Floralinda were just a delight. Honestly wish fewer words had been devoted to mechanically working their way down floors so we could get more on their dynamic developing. But then I’m a sucker for affection hidden behind sarcastic unpleasantness.
And they are both really truly unpleasant at times, in amusing sorts of ways. Floralinda’s whole arc takes her from sheltered passivity to something more active and terrifying, but it never exactly makes her likeable. Which, to be clear, is not a complaint. Quite the opposite, really. Muir really is excellent at writing spiky women.
Anyway yeah, not the most substantial read in the world, but incredibly fun time.

🏃🏻♀️ MUSINGS 📌 PINTEREST 💻 WANTED CONNECTIONS
𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬
full name: naomi elise mason nicknames: nay, mimi ( by family and close friends ) age + birthday: thirty5, july 24th ( leo ) gender + pronouns: cis female, she/her occupation: marketing manager @ the field museum residence: the loft district, factory flats, unit #2b sexuality: heterosexual languages: english and american sign language character inspirations: veronica mars, lorelai gilmore, hermione granger faceclaim: lyndsy fonseca
( TW: N/A. )
When Naomi Mason was a small toddler, her mother sat her down on the living room floor, surrounded by colorful board books while her mother patiently repeated words and signs. At the time, she didn’t fully understand why her mother was teaching her to move her hands a certain way, but ever the curious child, she eagerly mimicked every motion. She remembered running towards her father when he came home and enthusiastically signing something as simple as “I love you” and the proud grin on his face as he signed the words back. Her parents made sure ASL became an integral part of their household the moment they learned her little brother was profoundly deaf. Naomi never saw it as a burden or obligation, just another way to communicate with and support her brother. Even as a child, she’d always been fiercely loyal and independent and naturally took on a protective and guiding role for her siblings while setting high expectations for herself.
Naomi was a bright, competitive and determined kid. From the start she excelled academically, pushing herself towards the top of her class while also participating in extracurriculars. Track and field became her outlet, giving her a way to relieve stress and challenge herself physically. She loved the thrill of competition and the solitude of running – whenever things got too much for her, she could easily be found on the race track at school. She was always a bit too serious for her age, feeling the need to be the “responsible one” in the family and set a good example for her siblings. While she was driven, Naomi’s personality was never cold. She would tease and banter with her siblings and friends with a sharp wit and dry sense of humor. She had a small but close-knit group of friends, and that’s how she preferred her social circles. While her parents were warm and supportive, Naomi always felt like she had to be the one who “had it together” even when she didn’t. Fake it ‘til you make it was her motto. She rarely let people see her struggle which led to a habit of bottling things up.
By the time she graduated high school, Naomi had her future all mapped out. She went to the University of Chicago and double majored in marketing and communications, eager to prove her ability in the fast-paced world of business and branding. After graduating, she landed an entry-level position at a small creative agency where she quickly made a name for herself. The long hours and high pressure environment suited her – she thrived on the challenge and constantly pushing herself to be better. She promoted up the ranks at the agency until five years ago when she realized she wanted something more meaningful than just selling products. That’s when she became the Field Museum’s marketing manager assisting in promoting exhibits, new artworks, and museum events. It was at the museum where she could combine her marketing skills with her love for history and education. While her career was thriving, Naomi’s personal life was a bit more complicated. She had the odd date here and there, but found it hard to balance relationships with her demanding work schedule. She had a serious boyfriend in her late-twenties–a fellow driven, career focus guy–but the relationship eventually fell apart when neither of them were able to prioritize making it work. Naomi struggled with being vulnerable and when things started feeling too messy she had a tendency to run rather than stand and fight for it. Now at 35, Naomi has built a highly successful career but has realized there’s still something missing. Seeing Elliott with her new little niece has made her start reassessing what she truly wants from her personal life. For the first time in years, she’s wondering if she’s ready to let someone in—fully, without holding back.

People I'd Like to Know Better
Last song: Who You Are by Kidneythieves (a Jane-Remi anthem)
Last book: A Sorceress Comes to Call (so good)
Last movie: Jennifer's Body (rewatched on Halloween)
Last TV show: Veronica Mars (rewatch, season 1 and 2 only)
Sweet/spicy/savoury: I am a sugar fiend. Sweet always!
Relationship status: too tired for one. It's been like 12 years. The fatigue is not abating. Which is probably why they call it chronic fatigue syndrome. 🙄
Current obsession: learning how to crochet cute plushies, and therefore YARN YARN YARN
Last thing Googled: If we're talking 'with actual Google', I couldn't tell you. It's been years. Internet searched in general: 'Americans making terrible microwave tea' and various offshoot phrases from that. XD
Looking forward to: various 40th birthday-adjacent meals with siblings, father and friends in early December.
Tagging: I hate tagging people, because of the people I don't tag possibly feeling snubbed. So if you see this and you want to do it, please do!
