⇢ 📱 STATUS ﹕ open. ⇢ 📱 DETAILS ﹕ snow frolic event, later in the evening
The crowds around the park were beginning to thin, the night slipping into something quieter, more intimate as families with their young children started making their way home. Elliot had taken Sawyer back home for the night, so Naomi found herself roaming the winding walkways lined with twinkling lights. The festivities weren’t over yet, but the energy had definitely shifted. The winter air bit at her cheeks, the chill chasing away the warmth from the mulled wine she’d been sipping earlier. She cupped her hands together and blew warm air into them before deciding it was time for a pit stop at the hot chocolate bar. The line wasn’t as intense as it had been earlier in the night ( thankfully ) so after a minute or two, she had her cup and was piling on just the right amount of toppings. Naomi reached forward for the can of whipped cream at the same time as the person in front of her in line. “Oh ! Sorry,” Naomi offered the other an apologetic smile. She gestured for them to use the can first. “Please, you first. Just don’t use it all up,” she joked.

The grin on Naomi’s face widened as her brother let out a sigh. When they’d first arrived at the Snow Frolic, she’d volunteered to scout ahead to see what the lines at the food stalls looked like. By pure happenstance, Naomi came across the sign-up list for the winter beard contest, and she hadn’t even finished the thought before her fingers clasped the pen that had been tied to a clipboard and filled in Elliot’s name. She’d practically skipped all the way back to where her brother and niece were waiting for her, looking at all the bright lights and decorations. “Absolutely too late,” she signed back, her expression a mix of amusement and smug satisfaction. There was a mischievous glint in her eyes, the kind that said she was thoroughly enjoying herself at his expense. She watched Elliot go through the five stages of grief in real time, her hands shoved into the pockets of her coat, looking entirely too pleased with herself. “Besides, this isn’t worse than the ‘bad haircut incident’ of 2003. This is nothing in comparison.” Naomi leaned in, pretending to inspect his beard with all the seriousness of a dog show judge. She scratched at her chin, leaning from side to side to study him from different angles. “I think you’ve got a real shot, little bro! Distinguished. Refined. This is at least third place material.” Her shoulders shook with silent laughter as she reached forward and playfully poked at his cheek. “Sawyer agrees with me. Don’t you, baby girl?” Naomi reached out and gently tapped Sawyer’s tiny mitten, vocalizing the last part of the sentence and receiving a happy gurgle in response; the baby completely oblivious to her father’s suffering. Naomi clapped her hands twice, and gestured for Elliot to hand her over. “Come on. Hand me my niece so you can have your fifteen minutes of fame.”

All Elliot had wanted was a nice day out with his sister and daughter. Planning on eating as much food as he could and get his hands on a glass of mulled wine. But as he looked at his sister, Elliot pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a deep sigh. No idea why he was so surprised by what she had just told him. Really, he shouldn't be surprised with anything when it came to his siblings. Used to their shenanigans (and the ones he gave right back to them) over the years. But yet here he was, hoping to whatever higher power there might be that he had simply read her hands wrong. Because there was no way in hell Naomi had just signed him up to compete in the winter beard contest.
"Trying to figure out if it's too late in my life to disown you." Elliot signed back, doing his best to keep the corner of his lips from quirking up in amusement. As much as he didn't want to admit it, the entire thing was actually pretty funny. It wasn't even like his beard was that impressive. Hell, he only grew one out because he looked like a teenager without one. And surely there were going to be beards up there that would put his to shame. "Wonder if Sawyer would notice if she's suddenly down an aunt." He added, looking down at the baby strapped to his chest, bundled up, happily chewing away at one of her little gloved hands.
Another huff fell from his lips seconds later. "I hate you, I really hope you know that." Knowing full well that the grin that had now snuck its way onto his face was giving him away. There was no way he could hate Naomi, not even if he was about to have to get up in front of a small crowd of people that seemed to have gathered.

( TW: N/A. )
When Naomi Mason was a small toddler, her mother sat her down on the living room floor, surrounded by colorful board books while her mother patiently repeated words and signs. At the time, she didn’t fully understand why her mother was teaching her to move her hands a certain way, but ever the curious child, she eagerly mimicked every motion. She remembered running towards her father when he came home and enthusiastically signing something as simple as “I love you” and the proud grin on his face as he signed the words back. Her parents made sure ASL became an integral part of their household the moment they learned her little brother was profoundly deaf. Naomi never saw it as a burden or obligation, just another way to communicate with and support her brother. Even as a child, she’d always been fiercely loyal and independent and naturally took on a protective and guiding role for her siblings while setting high expectations for herself.
Naomi was a bright, competitive and determined kid. From the start she excelled academically, pushing herself towards the top of her class while also participating in extracurriculars. Track and field became her outlet, giving her a way to relieve stress and challenge herself physically. She loved the thrill of competition and the solitude of running – whenever things got too much for her, she could easily be found on the race track at school. She was always a bit too serious for her age, feeling the need to be the “responsible one” in the family and set a good example for her siblings. While she was driven, Naomi’s personality was never cold. She would tease and banter with her siblings and friends with a sharp wit and dry sense of humor. She had a small but close-knit group of friends, and that’s how she preferred her social circles. While her parents were warm and supportive, Naomi always felt like she had to be the one who “had it together” even when she didn’t. Fake it ‘til you make it was her motto. She rarely let people see her struggle which led to a habit of bottling things up.
By the time she graduated high school, Naomi had her future all mapped out. She went to the University of Chicago and double majored in marketing and communications, eager to prove her ability in the fast-paced world of business and branding. After graduating, she landed an entry-level position at a small creative agency where she quickly made a name for herself. The long hours and high pressure environment suited her – she thrived on the challenge and constantly pushing herself to be better. She promoted up the ranks at the agency until five years ago when she realized she wanted something more meaningful than just selling products. That’s when she became the Field Museum’s marketing manager assisting in promoting exhibits, new artworks, and museum events. It was at the museum where she could combine her marketing skills with her love for history and education. While her career was thriving, Naomi’s personal life was a bit more complicated. She had the odd date here and there, but found it hard to balance relationships with her demanding work schedule. She had a serious boyfriend in her late-twenties–a fellow driven, career focus guy–but the relationship eventually fell apart when neither of them were able to prioritize making it work. Naomi struggled with being vulnerable and when things started feeling too messy she had a tendency to run rather than stand and fight for it. Now at 35, Naomi has built a highly successful career but has realized there’s still something missing. Seeing Elliott with her new little niece has made her start reassessing what she truly wants from her personal life. For the first time in years, she’s wondering if she’s ready to let someone in—fully, without holding back.
