So, in the waning days of 2023, we have three writers / authors behaving badly.
Cait Corrain - who had it all for a writer and was about to debut the first of 2 novels in 2024, yet decided to spend time to create some sockpuppet accounts on Goodreads to reviewbomb BIPOC writers who dared to have their books released in 2024...and stupidly use the same sockpuppets to give her own book 5 stars. She's been dropped by the friends she lied to / used, her book agent, and her publisher.
Lauren M Davis - believes that a WOC plagiarized her. The idea that was plagiarized? A character with sun-based powers. [Insert facepalm here]
Girl, you're not the first to have that idea, whut?
Demetrious Polychron (seriously, this is the name he goes with) - some ballsy fanfic writer who wrote what he called "the pitch perfect sequel to LOTR" and decided to sue THE ESTATE OF JRR TOLKIEN and Amazon for "infringing the copyright of his book". The Tolkien estate won and they countersued, demanding that Polychron destroy all physical copies of his book.
At the moment I'm writing this Tumblr post, we're not yet done with the year 2023. Either we've got the third one (it comes in threes, right?) OR there's still time for more ridiculousness in the world of publishing / books.

The Anti-TBR Tag
(Shoutout to Nicole and Her Books for creating this tag!) 1. A popular book EVERYONE loves that you have no interest in reading? ACOTAR, also known as A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Her take on Fae and faery romance just doesn’t do it for me. 2. A classic book (or author) you don’t have an interest in reading? John Steinbeck. Not to knock his talent, but his works are…

I was at a bookstore looking through the art section and I saw a spine that said The Camden Town Nudes which was interesting because this didn’t seem like the bookstore where I would ever find something like that and I wanted to have a casual look but like. This also wasn’t exactly the bookstore where you felt like you could look at naked pictures let alone just suggestive paintings of them, it’s a really small shop as well, so I was like right I’ll just take a quick peek, I’m an art student, I love history, maybe I’ll buy it. I looked both ways and saw the shopkeep had left momentarily and no one was about, so I opened it and found it was an entire book featuring nude Edwardian women all painted by Walter Sickert between 1905-1912 and it was actually quite a revolutionary set of paintings for its time given that it featured very raw depictions of working class nude women in dark London instead of the elegant, white bedsheet clad, Demure middle and upper class women usually depicted.
And of course RIGHT as I flip to this lady’s boobs practically taking up an entire double page spread, every customer in a 5 mile radius appeared from around the corners of the shelf including the shopkeep and immediately regressing to a wet, pathetic Edwardian man from 1908, startled, I dropped the large book which caused a giant SLAP on the floor in this already silent store thus causing all patrons to look down at me scrambling on my knees to close a giant book of Edwardian boobs and let me tell you it would not have been nearly as funny had I not immediately felt like some Edwardian local pervert who just tried to sneak a cheeky peek at the erotic book in the bookstore only to drop it dramatically causing a scene, red up to his ears trying to shove it back on the shelf. Like such a casual and normal thing in modern day but looking at Edwardian women suddenly turned it into this egregious act as I apparently became possessed by the spirit of a moustached man in a bowler hat and morning coat going Good Heavens I mustn’t gaze upon these images in public lest the constable haul me away!
#Like it was the fact that if it had been any other book on the same subject I would not have batted an eye#Suddenly it was 1912 and I was doing something scandalous#And I’m sad because I wanted it but obviously I didn’t buy it because how could you at that point#The still deeply traumatised soul of an Edwardian man prohibited it I guess#So instead I walked away with books on caring for antiques and WWI unironically#I need to draw this#me#laugh tag#edwardian era

I did not expect to hyperfixate on Gravity Falls again in 2024. Holy moly! Anyway, enjoy my inability to choose a colour palette.
Side note : I ordered the Book of Bill, still waiting for it deliver here down under! I’m tweaking! Practically frothing at the mouth! ((Also I’m aware the line “I’m still on your mind” isn’t referring to ford but he’s my favourite and I wanted to draw him yayyy + it’s a banger quote.))

My favourite artist has been cancelled! What do I do??
I think this is the wrong way to address the issue. Rather than cancellation, we need individually to decide how the scandal, statement, or other controversy colours the work we love, and in what shades. For some people, the metatextual knowledge of the artist will be overwhelming, and they won't be able to continue to consume the work. For others, it will just be another thread, however distasteful, on top of the themes and interpretations that were already present in the artist's art. For others still, it will have no effect at all, as they don't inject that commentary into the text at all. All three are equally valid.
There's a fourth group, of course, which is particularly social media prone, who enjoy feeling morally righteous by ceasing to consume the work of people who've been cancelled. I know because I spent a lot of time thinking that way. If you're one of those, I'm sure you'll be tempted to reply, but I'm not talking to you. So we'll leave door number 4 for now.
What I would suggest is that you go back and consume the art that you love and see how much you read the current scandal into it. That will tell you how much you're still able to enjoy the work for what it was to you a month ago. It might be that falling into those old, comforting flows of language or colour of music allows you to put the real world aside as you fall into it. It might well be that it's time to find some other artist who speaks to you in a similar way. Even if you return to that artist's work some day in the future.
Whatever you choose to do, I'd say take a break from the discourse here and on other social media and make your mind up for yourself. Ultimately art is a conversation between the artist and the consumer. Everything else is just noise.
I've put in the tags the artist I was thinking of when I wrote this, but I really do think it applies to any artist; including ones that I personally find loathsome, such as J. K. Rowling or Morrissey. Your relationship with art is your own, and don't let anyone else shout you down.

The scene that implanted itself onto my head probably isn't what ACD thought BUT. The king must've been flabbergasted. Or not. Maybe I am seeing things. Maybe I should stop or maybe not maybe I'm crazy what. I read this, thought about it. Then I went to sleep, thought about it. Ruminated on it. then I woke up, thought about it. MY BOOK IS OPEN FOR PREORDERS!
I am super excited that my book is now available for preorder in all formats: paper, e-book, and audio. I have been waiting so long for this. Please support me if the summary looks fun to you!
Amazon link at https://www.amazon.com/Holy-Maidens-Guide-Getting-Kidnapped/dp/1039482465 or click on the link below (I'm writing out the link too because sometimes tumblr redirect can stop working.)
Barnes and Noble link (paperback only): https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/a-holy-maidens-guide-to-getting-kidnapped-katy-nyquist/1146012785
Cover:
Summary:
A Holy Maiden should never drink, get kidnapped, nor kiss a Dark Lord, but Ysabel is breaking all the rules to escape her fate as a human sacrifice.
In a world where magical powers are commonplace, Holy Maiden Ysabel is revered as a goddess among her people. She's the only one able to heal the sick and injured with a simple touch. But her spectacular gift comes at a steep price. For each person she saves, she loses a day of her own conscripted life. To add insult to injury, she's supposed to maintain a pure image even though she'd rather drink and play dominatrix until her sorrows fade away.
After the corrupt Head Cardinal Jiang abuses her gift, forbids her from leaving the city, and takes her brother hostage, Ysabel doesn't dare drag anyone else into her problems—especially since it won't change her fate. But when Dark Lord Kaine arrives at her clinic doorstep grievously wounded, she's touched by his refusal to accept her healing lest it cost her another day of her life.
The mysterious and sexy Dark Lord awakens forbidden desires in Ysabel, and the nagging survival instinct she tried to drown with booze and drugs comes back with a vengeance. She's less impressed, however, when he threatens to sack her city in return for his injuries. Fortunately, she can flirt her way to an alliance against the Head Cardinal instead.
Armed with only a ferociously loyal female bodyguard named Alzira, Ysabel attempts to make the most of her mere months left to live, protect the refugees around her city, prevent a war, and hide her face blindness. But before her life flickers to its sad end, she must decide: either die a proper Holy Maiden or risk it all to run off with Kaine.

revisiting crassus, clodius, and the bona dea scandal! but this time with a new composition and a limited color palette
originally when I drew the first version of this idea, it was back when I thought that crassus would be a week long fixation at most (lmao), and instead he just. took up permanent residence in my mind. it seemed like a fun thing to go back to an earlier idea and see what changed now that I've spent a lot more time with everyone involved in this era!
also the way these two interlocked politically. I am. biting into it.
The Defeat of Rome: Crassus, Carrhae and the Invasion of the East, Gareth C. Sampson
Crassus: the First Tycoon, Peter Stothard
Crassus: A Political Biography, B. A. Marshall
Crassus, Clodius, and Curio in the Year 59 B.C., Robert J Rowland, Jr.
bsky ⭐ pixiv ⭐ pillowfort ⭐ cohost
#for example. i even know who catulus and caelius are now. i did Not know who the fuck they were when i drew the original one#now im like. wow. those sure were some allegations. goddamn#i forgot that ive drawn crassus and clodius fucking before. i'll revisit that someday. ANYWAY. time for some organizational tags#marcus licinius crassus#publius clodius pulcher#roman republic tag#do i. have a tag for the bona dea scandal. i should#drawing tag#ALSO the first tycoon book. it's not a good reference point. i disagree with uhhh like a good third of it. BUT it is an EXTREMELY sexy#read. i would love an HBO show using this book as a point of inspiration. im not kidding. id watch it so fast#i was reading something that implied clodius role in the bona dea scandal was actually partially crassus' machinations#to undermine both caesar AND pompey. and once i finish digesting THAT thought. i will. draw a comic probably

MORE GROGGITY FALLS it’s an infection! My book of bill is arriving this Friday, oh joy oh joy oh joy! I want to punt bill cogphog like a bosket ball.
(No I will not decide on one colour pallet. Would it even be a scandalous dirtcup post at this point if I didn’t have 3 of the same image in different colours? If I ever post one colour variation of a drawing my identity has been stolen.) also holy moly I read all your reposts, you people are an absolute pleasure! Thank you!

This Bond with this Q. Do you see the vision.
#matching festival looks#respectively Daniel Craig in Queer (2024) by Luca Guadagnino presented at the Venice Film Festival 2024#and Ben Whishaw in Limonov (2024) by Kirill Serebrennikov presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2024#both movies are inspired by books and the books themselves are both autobiographical even though in vastly different degrees#and both characters the play partake in gay sex#I have not watched the Limonov mobie yet but I have watched Queer#and who has read Limonov knows gay sex is not a secondary aspect of this guy's life#So#for your consideration#00q with these vibes#Limonov is indeed a real guy and I while I do not suggest shipping Lee the character from Queer by William S. Borroughs#and the real life unbelievably controversial figure of Eduard Veniaminovic Savenko 'Limonov'#I do think Limonov would have loved the idea of being rpf-ied. No no really. At least in his younger years.#Looking for fame and all that#But me I was just talking about the vibes of these two pictures/characters#'rpf is fine' -Eduard Limonov trying to be scandalous and controversial in Paris circa 1977#james bond#q#007#quartermaster
