I can't handle Seregil having a soft spot for Ilar. I also wish there had been more between Alec about the almost kiss he caught between Ilar and Seregil. They didn't actually get to talk about it, it about Seregil's feelings regarding Ilar, before everything was...I don't want to say hand waved away because Alec letting it go and forgiving Seregil when he did made absolute sense because he thought they were going to die and he didn't want to die angry at Seregil and with a wedge between them. But, afterward I think they should have had a real discussion at some point. Alec only brought it up one other time and that was to Seregil's sister and not Seregil himself. And I didn't love the answer she gave, mostly because leaving it at just that sounds like an excuse for Seregil and a dismissal of Alec's feelings.

And I'm not even saying she was wrong. And in all fairness Seregil wasn't about to kiss Ilar, Ilar was about to kiss him and he froze. Given their past, that makes sense. And his internal thoughts about it made it clear he was pretty not okay with it. But he and Seregil didn't have a chance to talk about it. And they haven't talked about it since. I just would like it if they did, that's all. Barring that it would be nice if someone who was actually good at writing would write a fic where they finally have this long overdue discussion.

In other news, I wish Seregil had let Alec drown Ilar. ✌️

kinda bothers me that so many people misinterpreted Malec break up era as Alec being biphobic (therefore the books are Bad). does Alec does say things to Magnus that are biphobic? yes. but i feel like it's very obvious that he's not saying them because Magnus has dated many people of both genders in the past but because he outright refuses to tell him anything about them. like Magnus won't even tell him how old he is, he just brushes him off & makes jokes about it. and that would make anyone a bit of an asshole I fear

Ok, I gotta know what “canon complicit” is for the WIP ask meme!

Mostly it's coda fic for individual episodes of the Shadowhunters TV show, to be honest, and there was a tumblr post about canon compliant vs complicit vs compatible which made me laugh so... [THIS, btw, is the version I saw, iirc]

I did specifically use it partly to be petty tho; when I got stuck on rewatching the show to do coda fic for the first two seasons (I was only actively fandoming at the same rate as the show for like, the very end of s2 into s3) I was also reading a lot of fic on AO3 and there was just... there was a lot of fic that seemed really out of character to me, and some of it was people who read and liked the books and were pulling aspects of characters from there (which I'm never gonna do because Clare is terrible) but some of it was people who were just... imho... wrong about my faves. (As people are wont to be, but we all must suffer in silence if we're not going to be assholes about it. 😅)

So some of the episode/fic notes in that folder are very specifically emphasizing aspects of the show's characterization that I particularly liked and was especially unlike fanon/book canon so there's a bit of spite!fic in there, yk?

Specifically I started and stopped like five different things where-in Alec is going to Pandemonium because I'm sad the show didn't let them hang out there, even if I understand that filming clubs is a pain and a half and they probably spent all their money on shiny swords and Magnus' wardrobe. (And I can't begrudge them Magnus' wardrobe because I enjoyed that tremendously, and I'm mostly even more indifferent to fashion than fanon!Alec.)

I was particularly proud of this bit in there, and istg I'm going to actually get it into something I publish eventually; it takes place in between s2 & s3, I guess? The timeline on this show is nonsense, don't worry about it. (Post soul-sword break-up & reconciliation.)

Magnus inches a little closer to Alec, until his knee bumps against Alec's shin. "If you're there as my boyfriend, especially a Shadowhunter, you're going to get a lot of attention." "So?" Alec flicks his fingers out, as if dismissing that. "You don't generally like people staring?" Magnus tilts his head, suddenly wondering if he knows Alec as well as he thought he did. Alec snorts. "Be hard to give a briefing with the entire Institute or a grumpy Council staring at me if that bothered me." "But..." Magnus waves his hands almost helplessly. He has no idea what to say to that. How did he get something this simple so wrong? "I don't like attention if I don't know what my role is, if I don't have, I don't know." Alec shrugs, as if he's not sure he's making sense, but he's going to keep going regardless. "Rules to follow? If I don't know what I'm supposed to do, or how I'm supposed to do it." Their entire relationship tilts slightly sideways in Magnus' head, and he sighs out a long shaky breath. Ohhh. "But you know how to be my boyfriend." "I'm not sure I do, considering." Alec's mouth twists, bitterness and regret and guilt, and Magnus has to hold in a wince. "I made myself think I had to keep all my roles separate, but that didn't work, that isn't possible, and I'd like..." He trails off again, a hint of a frown wrinkling its way across the bridge of his nose. "You'd like to try?" Magnus whispers. "Yeah." Alec ducks his head, the hint of a blush warming his face. "I want to do better this time." "So do I." Alec smiles, and his face is soft and Magnus has no idea what's happening, but he's certainly not complaining. "I didn't think you'd want to deal with a club." "Why wouldn't I be able to deal with a club?" Alec looks affronted, and his frown is back. Magnus bites his lip and lifts his eyebrows. "Clubs are full of people." Alec rolls his eyes. "I don't hate all people." "Darling." Magnus grins this time. "You like about six people in the entire world." "More like twelve." Alec lifts his chin, his eyes looking vaguely upward as if he's counting. His lips twist with amusement as he teases. "Alright, maybe ten."

I feel like when I’m reading or watching something, for me to like a hero, they have to

1) have ambition about anything

2) not be annoying

3) not excuse their shitty behaviour with their shitty childhood

4) not be so self-righteous they don’t see their own flaws

For these reasons I hate with a burning passion Jace Herondale, Clary Fairchild, Eli Ever, Tiberius “Cal” Calore VIII, Dean Winchester, and Legend/Dante Santos

Jace is constantly doing something shitty in every book and people don’t care and they just put up with it for some reason. In CoG he belittles Clary because he wants to push her away but keeps coming back to her. He also keeps coming onto Clary when he thought she was his sister and said that cursed sentence in CoG that I need to bleach from my brain. I know if he said that shit to me I would’ve punched him in his stupid face cuz who does he think he is? He mocks the werewolves after they lost a child in their pack, he’s just awful to Alec at times, he doesn’t seem to understand there are consequences to his actions and just does shit because he wants to. He had the emotional maturity of a dried up pinecone.

Clary also does so much shit and people don’t call her out because she’s the protagonist and she just lets Jace do whatever to her because he’s hot. Girl please get a grip. She slut shames Izzy because apparently women aren’t allowed to have a sex life or wear revealing clothing 😒 girl you kissed someone you thought was YOUR BROTHER!! She dated Simon to get over Jace and then kissed Jace in the Seelie Court, and repeatedly thought about Jace in a romantic sense WHILE she thought they were SIBLINGS! I can’t.

Eli is so self-righteous, annoying and hypocritical. He uses God and religion as an excuse to kill innocent people which is just disgusting. Like I get that he thinks being an EO changed a person because Victor became different but he is an EO himself and he just takes it on himself to murder innocent people for simply existing.

Cal has no desire to do anything, at least up to the beginning of King’s Cage he doesn’t (where I currently am). He knows how poorly the Reds are being treated and he doesn’t want to change anything because (and I’m paraphrasing) there would be outrage among the Silvers and a war would break out. Bitch you are already at war! He’s the reason why so many innocent young Reds have lost their lives fighting in a war they have no say in. He sees the Scarlet Guard killing Silvers and he doesn’t try to stop them. He sulks and whines but doesn’t take any real action, which he could if he actually wanted to. He stalks around the camp like Mare’s dog and thinks he’s better than everyone.

Dean Winchester is an abusive asshole. He locked Sam in the cellar when he was addicted to demon blood when he knew the withdrawal could kill him. He shit on Sam for being manipulated. He’s made horrible perverted jokes about women, might I remind y’all of the high school episode (he was at least 26 at the time). He guilted Sam for leaving him in Hell and Purgatory when he did THE EXACT SAME THING when Same went to the cage. He threatened Kaia, a teenager at gun point for his own selfish purposes. He abused Jack til the very end, yelling that he wasn’t family when Jack had sacrificed his soul and life for the Winchesters, and made Jack hate himself for being born. He was shitty to Cas in so many seasons and didn’t care that Cas just went through seeing his son die and wasn’t able to save him. He violated Sam’s body by tricking him into letting Gadreel in which led to the death of Kevin and had the audacity to think he was wronged.

Dante is shit. Julian, his brother, lived with him for centuries, followed him wherever he went and loved him unconditionally. All Julian asked was for Dante to love him back, which he never did. When Julian finally found someone who loved him, Dante made fun of him. And then in the next book he gives up his immortality for Tella, a girl he has known for literal months at most. He didn’t love his brother, who has been with him since the beginning, enough to give up his immortality but he loved this random girl he has known for a couple months at most to give it all up?? Tella should’ve left him in the dust just like she did Jacks and went off on adventures by herself and met someone that wasn’t a twat.

The knights of the holy order would be a group that’s been around for centuries that started as rebellion against aro

The holy order uses the church as a cover up

They have a council of leaders which is Billy Amun and Tanya

The second in command is Angela and Ben who help order around the other “monks”

Tyler and the rest of the friend group as well as some of the shifters as the “monks”

The plot twist I have here is that I’m taking the idea in daybreakers where if they catch on fire by the sun and get put out it cures them as well as makes them a cure

And it gonna be that device the friar made that causes it to cure them :D

But mostly it’s just aro being petty and turning people just to be an asshole

Do you have any recs for someone looking for an escapist Scottish hist. Romance? I just got asked out for coffee by a Republican finance bro and for ridiculous reasons I kinda have to go, and I'm dreading it.

Well, I would definitely NOT go if you can avoid it, and if you can't never go again! Trust me when I say that any time spent around a Republican man is just not worth it and frankly increasingly unsafe for many.

But that being said, the ultimate escapist fun romcom Scottish historical would be When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare, because Tessa Dare is really everything fun and escapist while maintaining a heart and an eye for the complications of life (in this case, loss and anxiety).

Elisa Braden's Midnight in Scotland series is a great route, as is her Scottish historical in a separate series, When A Girl Loves an Earl.

My favorite Scottish romances of all time are Jennifer Ashley's first four Mackenzie Brothers books, The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (hero's on the spectrum, heroine is a widow, they begin a casual affair but things get complicated), Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage (marriage in trouble as separated couple is brought back together by circumstances), The Many Sins of Lord Cameron (rakish single dad gets entwined in a mystery with a quiet widow), and The Duke's Perfect Wife (my favorite, second chance romance between a growly alpha duke and his ex-fiancee who doesn't give a fuck about his whole Deal). Rules for a Proper Governess, The Stolen Mackenzie Bride, and Alec Mackenzie's Art of Seduction are also good.

One Season with the Duke by Addy Du Lac. An heiress runs away to Scotland with her childhood best friend (a Scottish duke) so that they can marry before an asshole can force a marriage with her. Love ensues! Very fun and fluffy and sweet.

Scandal's Bride by Stephanie Laurens. An English hero (with a Scottish mother he never knew) ends up in an insane situation after the Scottish heroine drugs him into impregnating her because her goddess told her he was meant to father her children... but she also wants him to just knock her up and not know about it so she doesn't have to talk to him ever again.... Obvious dubcon, but if you can handle that (the hero... profoundly doesn't care about the consent issue, he just cares that she wasn't gonna call him basically lol) it's the ultimate escapist insanity and I laughed approx. 60 times reading it.

Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks. A classic medieval arranged marriage between warring clans book, with a deaf heroine.

Monica McCarty's Highland Guard series, in which a bunch of medieval Scottish heroes do various swashbuckling things in the name of Robert the Bruce, with their wild and wacky heroines in tow.

my favorite book is Memoirs Of An Imaginary Friend, my favorite song at the moment is Space Dragon by Alec Holowka, it's from the Night In The Woods OST. My blorbo of choice is Shidou from blue lock. we met at the parc the princes stadium when i got lost in the hallways during cocktails after a tour visit my work had planned, i didn't know who he was, i just saw him wearing his uniform and asked him for directions to go hack to the conference room. i work at the Laboratory of solid state physics at paris, so our jobs arent that far away. one time when we had arranged a date, he went to the lab to get me but people recognized him and i was wondering if he had stood me up until a coworker told me a famous person was at the entrance. when i went to the building's entrance, i saw ryusei with people around him asking him for an autograph or a picture with him (that's why he was late 🥹 but he had arrived on time) and when i saw him i just retrieved him lol like "hii, he's with me >.<"

you know how sometimes rereading books a few years later changes your opinion on certain characters entirely bc instead of being some older hot brooding hero they're now just some kid in your eyes. that's me with jace right now

in fact you may have asked his at the perfect moment because i had a whole breakdown about this last night in the group chat last night i feel like this text sums it up quite well

he has 2 to 6 parents depending on how you look at it and for at least 17 years none of them ever loved him. he was fully prepared to go back to his cartoonishly evil kidapper dad who physically abused him bc at least there he felt wanted. he just wanted maryse to read him a bedtime story when he was 10 like she did for alec and isabelle. she never did. he just wants to be loved so so desperately. he can be genuinely hilarious and charming but now i'm looking back on it, it mostly reads like that too is just a way he taught himself to get the attention he wants so desperately. it's implied that he's been suicidal/has engaged in acts of self-harm since he arrived with the lightwoods when he was literally 10.

i think most people (me included!!) just remember him as a sarcastic rude asshole which to be fair is very much who he is HOWEVER every single time we get jace pov he reveals another 5 reasons why he's actually kind of valid in his assholery. this boy is playing DSM-5 bingo and babes his card is FULL and it's literally so upsetting to read. he's just a very sad kid and i'm literally on my way to nyc adoption papers in hand
