His voice like a thunder clap, Merlin shouted, “How can you word better that you think I ruined my best friend’s wife so that I could screw her husband in peace?” “I didn’t say that, exactly,” Lainey protested in a tiny voice. “As if Arthur even would,” Merlin hissed, incensed on a level that Arthur had rarely seen. The air crackled for a moment, and one of the wine glasses broke untouched. “Do you know what I was to him, next to her?” The sudden drop in volume of his voice was enough to chill the air around him. “Nothing. I couldn’t hold a candle to her while holding literal candles.” Frighteningly even in tone, almost conversational, Merlin asked, “How dare you imply that he would ever do that to her, or that I have any right to her place – ” The tapers on the table flared and then went out, the only remaining light filtering in from the kitchen behind Merlin. “ – that I would steal her husband from her own bed – ” He balled his hands into fists on the table, suddenly shaking, and cursed at the top of his lungs, “Fuck you! Guinevere deserved respect, and I am no one’s fucking side piece!” “Merlin!” Leon yelled. Then in an effort to deescalate, “You’re scaring her.” From the timbre of his voice, he was scaring Leon too. Merlin took his hands from the table and straightened, bristling. “Oh, I’m scaring her?” Incredulous, Arthur demanded, “What the hell are you doing?” In response, Merlin said again, frighteningly reasonable, “I’m scaring her, Arthur. She’s scared.” Then he lunged forward. Arthur and Leon both seized at his arms to hold him back. The stench of wild magic invaded Arthur’s nostrils and threatened to make him cough. Ignoring them both, Merlin stretched his face as near to Lainey as he could get it and coldly informed her, “You have no idea what real fear is.”

PAC: Energy Check-In
Hello beautiful people! I have been so inconsistent with posting. Thank you all for your patience. But anyway, tonight's reading will consist of an energy check-in. We all need one, even me! Also, the Five Dollar Friday Sale will still happen! It will take place from 12 AM-11PM. Thank you guys so much for your support! Don't forget to check out the guidelines before booking with me. Dm me privately if you have any questions. Without further ado, please select your pile!
Left-to-Right: (1-3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pile One: I feel like you are currently trying to figure out what to do with yourself. I heard "I got so much energy!" in my head. Your sacral chakra is booming. I feel like you could be super horny or feeling like you need to create something. But you are trying to figure out a way to do this in an appropriate manner. The solution will come quick. There could be a partnership coming your way that will allow you to be more free flowing. It is essential at this time that you find ways to express yourself. Do not feed into self-limiting beliefs. You are prone to making impulsive decisions like dying your hair late at night or buying clothes that you won't even put on a year from now. Focus on what will fulfill you in the long run and stop trying to scratch an unscratchable itch. It will make you see things much easier.
Cards Used: 8 of Swords, 5 of Swords, The Hierophant, Ace of Wands, 8 of Wands, Queen of Wands.
Pile Two: Someone has you feeling real good. Princess treatment will do that to you. When you have the right people around you, you feel unstoppable. I heard "Who you feeling like?" in my head. Right now, you could be receiving lots of compliments, which boost your morale as a result. I am seeing a young girl toss her hair from side to side with her fingertips. In the back of your mind, you may worry about how long this version of you will last. You need to not allow the past comments of hate get to you at this time. Do not self-sabotage yourself because people could not see the light in you. Let the haters do the hating for you. You could have Saturn in the 12th house which relates to the subconscious. You need to have conversations with your inner child to heal. Move forward from the angst and the hurt people have caused you. Start anew. And most importantly, forgive yourself.
Cards Used: Ace of Wands, 2 of Cups, 10 of Cups, King of Discs, 4 of Cups, The Devil, 6 of Cups.
Pile Three: You are in this lover girl energy. It almost feels familiar --- the scenario that you have found yourself to be in. You need to look closer with this person. Everyone will pass your test if you don't do any further investigation. You have the tendency to get "stuck on" crushes for a long time. You could be prone to limerence. You are going to get the answer that you are looking for, a reality check. But it will be in your best interest, don't worry. You are trying to investigate from afar but this won't really benefit you. You need to pay close attention and start being less lenient. You're a cute girl and you know that, don't you? But what is cute if it means you lose your mind every time you find someone attractive? Part of your lesson in this life is to be more comfortable with accepting your beauty as is. You are not incomplete if you are not in an "OTP", love.
Cards Used: The Moon, The Empress, 4 of Discs, 4 of Wands, 10 of Cups, 5 of Wands, Justice, 2 of Discs

Welcome to another round of W2 Tells You What You Should See, where W2 (me) tries to sell you (you) on something you should be watching. Today's choice: 沙海/Tomb of the Sea/Sand Sea.
Tumblr media
Sand Sea is the 2018 installment of the DMBJ/Lost Tomb franchise, which tells the story of the search for an ancient desert city, a fight against a secretive assassin family, the raiding of more than a couple tombs, and a whole bunch of other action-packed bullshit.
Have you ever watched an anime adaptation that outran the as-yet-incomplete manga it was adapting, necessitating it throw together a largely befuddling ending based on the available clues? That's Sand Sea. At time of production, only ~75% of the Sand Sea novel had been written. As I am making this post, that's still all of the Sand Sea novel that has been written. I finished watching the show and had a lot of questions about its loose ends. I read the book. It didn't help.
So, I'm not going to try and summarize the story, much less try to sell you on the show on the strength of the plot. What I am going to try and do is convince you it's a good time anyway.
As I mentioned earlier, it's part of a larger franchise, but you shouldn't let that stop you from diving in here. Most of the DMBJ shows and books are narrated by Wu Xie, the series' special little birthday boy. Sand Sea takes a different tack -- your main POV characters are completely new to the world of the tombs, meaning that the show explains things to you while it's explaining things to them. Wu Xie's still a major character, but you're seeing him through the eyes of a befuddled teenager who wasn't even supposed to be here today.
Tumblr media
I'm going to give you five reasons to watch this series, and all five of them are relationships. I'm pitching it to you this way because, as was the case in my rec for Reunion (one of the other tomb-raiding dramas), I'm assuming you have zero familiarity with DMBJ, which means that any appeals to the larger franchise or its twists and turns will have no impact. Instead, I am here to sell this to you on the strength of character interactions. If you're interested in what the characters are doing, the plot will come.
1. Dudes Rock
The aforementioned teenager narrator is Li Cu, a too-cool-for-school underachiever who lives with his abusive father and has no direction in life. He comes with his two best (and only) friends: earnest pushover Su Wan and neighborhood bully Yang Hao.
Tumblr media
They're a trio of problem children who cannot succeed by the metrics of society at large: Li Cu and Yang Hao are both from family circumstances that have hampered their ability to perform academically, while Su Wan, bless his heart, is just not that bright. They do, however, all do well when put in situations that play to their strengths and given appropriate mentorship. (Alas that all of their mentors are terrible people; see point 4.)
They're set up as an intentional next-generation parallel to the Iron Triangle, which is the term DMBJ uses for Wu Xie and his two closest people. Normally, the Iron Triangle would be the core of a DMBJ story -- but since that threesome is broken by Circumstances at the moment, these boys become the substitute triad whose friendship is one of the main bonds holding the narrative together.
Tumblr media
They have such teenage boy dynamics, it's great. They're stupid about girls and alcohol and money and homework and all the other things teen boys are stupid about, while also being stupid enough to get themselves entangled in shadowy international conspiracies. Huge parts of the plot are fueled entirely by their dumbass decisions. But they also barely have any competent adult supervision in their lives, so you know, when you're seventeen and basically feral, renting a warehouse so you can beat a bunch of frozen snakes to death actually sounds like a good solution to the problem at the time.
It's not all comedy, though. Li Cu and Yang Hao in particular are deeply traumatized young men even before the story starts, and events of the series make it worse. They're definitely the "feelings are for girls!" type of young men, and they need Su Wan there as their eternally bippy buffer. When he's not, they can get mean.
What's also charming about this trio is that they're all pretty darn straight. In a franchise chock full of (unintentional?) homoeroticism, these three manage to keep their platonic dude dynamics pretty platonic. I mean, I myself come at most things with slash-colored glasses on, and even I'm of the opinon that they're befuddled heterosexuals struggling with how the entire tomb-raiding industry's gay. And even if you assume everyone in this entire show is straight, these boys are still going to get a bunch of real-time lessons in how to love other people, whether they like it or not!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So if you like a Teen Boy Squad of goobers who don't want to admit they're close or have emotions or anything like that, right up until they're all each other have, this may be just the thing for you.
2. The Only Good Het in the Tombs
DMBJ is not known for its high-quality heterosexual romance, to put it mildly. Most of the time, it makes the smart decision to not even try. When it does, you mostly wish it hadn't.
Therefore, you cannot imagine how shocked I was to find myself falling head-over-heels for the incredibly weird canonical love story between horny hot mess Dr. Liang Wan and emotionally constipated 80-year-old virgin and arsonist Zhang Rishan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their relationship goes a little something like this: He needs something from her, so he contrives a plan to ask her out. She declares him her boyfriend. He continues the relationship in order to continue getting things from her. She thinks he's hot, so she's fine with that. He warns her that continuing their relationship will involve messing with some very bad members of the Tomb-Raiding Industrial Complex. She's like, again, you're incredibly hot, so that's not a problem. He makes her memorize maps and sends her to a desert. She dresses up like him and pepper-sprays him. And somewhere in the midst of all that, he falls for her and she gets sick of his shit, and they wind up for-real dating as equals.
Tumblr media
Part of what's so delightful about their relationship is how awful they are to one another. It'd be bad if that awfulness were one-sided, but man, they each give as good as they get. He's heartless and exploitative, and she's neurotic and insecure. She makes constant demands of him that he's almost too confused by to refuse, and he keeps putting her in situations no sane person should want to be part of. He comes from a cutthroat world of complete bastards, while she wears her heart on her sleeve whether she wants to or not. They're extremely good for one another, because he trusts her competencies and is going to make her demonstrate every one of them, while one of her chief skills is calling him on his bullshit.
Tumblr media
It is at this point I need to sing the praises of Liang Wan, hottest of the hot messes. She's one of the principal POV characters for the novel, where she's just as boy-crazy (though for a different boy, because Zhang Rishan's not in this book) and just as far in over her head. The adaptation has absolutely done her character justice. What makes Liang Wan so charming to me is how much she absolutely refuses to let herself be stopped by being completely out of her depth. She doesn't know what the hell is going on most of the time, but fuck it, she's rolling with it. She's just also going to be applying moisturizer and anti-aging serum the entire time, because you know what, sometimes when your whole world is falling apart around you, the one thing you can count on is your skincare routine.
Tumblr media
Zhang Rishan is surrounded by people so cool, butter doesn't melt in their mouths. He can be balls-out naked in front of them without batting an eyelash. It is her thirsty disaster charms alone that have set fire to his frozen heart. I love them to bits.
3. Enemies to ... ???
Tumblr media
This is Sand Sea's Wu Xie. You're not going to like him at first, because he spends the first several episodes tormenting a teen who only mildly seems to deserve it. What you find out as the show goes on is that Wu Xie is having a bad time -- more than that, he's having a straight-up bad decade. He has taken a lot of psychic damage and decided to cope with it by being absolutely insane. He's a bitch with no sense of self-preservation living in constant gremlin mode. He is no longer under the active supervision of his husbands, and he's going to make that everyone else's problem.
The show chooses to start out by inflicting Wu Xie on a bunch of strangers through an arc that's bizarre, lengthy, and mostly completely unrelated to the larger plot. It does introduce a few elements that will matter, though, and one of them is Su Nan.
Tumblr media
When Su Nan appeared as the badass head of a mercenary outfit, I was braced for one (or both) of two things to happen. Thing one, I figured she'd die or otherwise leave the narrative after the first arc, which made me not want to get attached to her, if she wasn't going to stick around. Thing two, I was all but certain the show was going to try and make her Wu Xie's love interest, which made me make such a face, because [see last point].
Neither happens. Su Nan is still around in the final episode, and what she becomes to Wu Xie is much, much more interesting.
Tumblr media
They're not friends. They're never friends. They can't be friends, because they absolutely can't trust one another. Except sometimes they have to trust one another, and in return they have to allow themselves to be trustworthy.
In the last relevant chapter or so of the novel, Wu Xie gets his throat cut and shoved off a cliff ... and because the novel isn't finished, we have no idea why that happened or who did it. The drama decides that when he goes over that cliff this time, throat unslit, Su Nan needs to go with him. This means they spend much of the later part of the series depending on one another for survival, getting real vulnerable, sharing trauma, and occasionally fucking one another over anyway, because they are both bad and untrustworthy people.
And they're ... kinda into one another? But because it's not textual, it winds up being great. If the show had tried to write their romance, I would have hated it. Instead, it chooses to leave things fraught and unspecified, with the two of them obviously having a lot of feelings but not even knowing themselves what all those feelings are, much less how to react appropriately to them. That is delicious. Pour that right into my mouth.
Tumblr media
I also choose to interpret Su Nan as being transfemme (complimentary), if only because that's the most charitable explanation for her dedication to keeping her tits out and her lipstick game sharp even in wilderness conditions.
4. This Man Should Not Be Trusted With Children
As I mentioned before, all members of the Teen Boy Squad wind up paired with adult men who act as their mentors. Li Cu and Wu Xie are the main duo, since they're the main character of this show and the main character of the entire franchise, respectively. Yang Hao winds up in an even more abusive dynamic with a bitch of a man who takes advantage of Yang Hao's capacity for rage. But precious baby Su Wan is lucky enough to be adopted by, well...
Tumblr media
If you read my rec for Reunion, you will recognize him as the guy I called "this giant fucking loser" with all the affection in the world. Hei Xiazi is both the worst and the best, which makes him the perfect man to take care of the tender soul that is Su Wan.
Tumblr media
Su Wan's a poor little rich boy who is happy to be bullied by his friends, because it means he has friends! He's a dipshit because he's sheltered by his family wealth, and he's also a dipshit because he'd be a dipshit no matter how much money he had. He needs someone to kick his ass in a way that builds him back up again and helps him make the transition from doormat to functional adult.
The circumstances that bring these two together are so batshit, they're not worth recounting here. Suffice it to say that as one adventure arc ends, Hei Xiazi is tasked with taking Su Wan home. Su Wan expresses interest in whatever Hei Xiazi's whole deal is, and Hei Xiazi responds by offering (in a roundabout way) lessons in what exactly his whole deal is.
Tumblr media
Hei Xiazi is a terrible teacher, but he's a perfect teacher for Su Wan, who is the kind of boy who would go find the nearest dictionary if you told him the word "gullible" wasn't there. They're preciously weird at one another. The work so well together because Su Wan believes the best of everything, which leads him to see right past the parts of Hei Xiazi that other people (correctly) find inscrutable and offputting. With Hei Xiazi's questionable guidance, Su Wan finds for the first time in his naive, privileged life a goal for himself that is both achievable and worth the effort.
Tumblr media
Later books give evidence that all three of the boys eventually go to work for Hei Xiazi, which I think is great, especially since he is somehow the least toxic and terrible of all the mentor characters. ...Man, though, that bar is low. It's a miracle anyone in DMBJ survives into adulthood.
It's also cute to think about how the boys are no doubt context-appropriately homophobic, because it's so easy to picture their respective reactions to finding out that their strong, terrible male role models are queer. Cue Li Ci and Yang Hao's respective no-homo freakouts, while Su Wan just has a million slightly offensive but ultimately well-meaning questions about how bisexuality works.
Tumblr media
And I'm just going to say, if you watched the Untamed and loved Xue Yang? You owe it to yourself to see that actor suddenly become the sweetest little butterscotch muffin ever. ...Yes, if you didn't recognize him earlier, that's Wang Haoxuan, and he turns in an incredible comic performance here. Su Wan is consistently one of the funniest characters onscreen. The bit with the saxaphone kills me dead.
Anyway, unlike the first three relationships I've talked about here, this is one you have to wait a good long while for. Su Wan shows up in the first episode, Hei Xiazi appears about a dozen or so episodes later, but it takes their storylines much longer to cross. It's worth the wait, though, knowing that eventually you'll get to see these two weirdos bounce merrily off one another.
5. Everybody Loves Pangzi
Tumblr media
This is the Iron Triangle I mentioned earlier. Obviously there's Wu Xie in the middle. The perfect boy in the hoodie is Xiao Ge, who is at the time of this series slightly stuck in what's basically a giant time-lock safe, so you're only ever going to see him in flashbacks. (Xiao Ge is trapped, so you can't have Xiao Ge.) And then, over there on the left is the man whose nickname translates to "fatty," Wang Pangzi.
Hold on to your butts, because I am now going to wax poetic about how much I love this fictional man.
Tumblr media
Pangzi is the best. The best. He's funny. He's kind. He's got terrible taste in men and only slightly less terrible taste in women. He's a gentleman. He's the party shock absorber. He's prone to making things explode. He's impeccably dressed. He's charmingly superstitious. He's not subtle. He's got an excitable little stammer and an atrocious Beijing accent. He's a flexible fat man. He's the most fuckable person onscreen no matter who's onscreen with him.
He's also usually the DMBJ everyman character, except Sand Sea has a ton of everyman characters for a change, so he winds up filling the role of a badass insider instead. His job is basically to hold down the fort while Xiao Ge's indisposed and Wu Xie's off being insane. In the absence of both his beloveds, Pangzi's going to do what needs to be done, and he's going to be incredibly hot while he's doing it.
Tumblr media
Usually, DMBJ shows serve up a huge amount of Pangzi and Wu Xie interaction. Sand Sea only puts them in the same room near the very end -- but they're collaborating throughout. In fact, the only way the whole story works is if they're basically so much in each other's back pockets that they can function as a single unit even across great distances. The record will show that I read them as husbands -- but more importantly, they're good friends who understand and trust one another completely. As much as it pains me that they're apart for basically the entire thing, they're never really apart, you know?
However, because Wu Xie is physically elsewhere for so much of the show, Sand Sea provides a unique chance to see Pangzi interacting on his own with other characters. Wu Xie is the special little boy who always takes up all the oxygen in the room -- and of course Pangzi doesn't begrudge him this, because Pangzi loves him. Without Wu Xie around, though, we get to watch all the other relationships Pangzi has cultivated over the years.
Tumblr media
One of the best is with Xie Yuchen, a.k.a. Xiao Hua. In other series, we see the two interact, but only in the context of having Wu Xie around. Sand Sea presents us with a little window into what is clearly a longstanding friendship. From the tiny bit we get of their interactions, it's obvious they hang out on a pretty regular basis. They're chilling and having spa dates while their husbands are out there getting sandy and fighting snakes, proving that these two urbanites are absolutely the brains of their respective marriages.
...Hold up a second,
I hear you say,
IS this show actually gay? Because you keep using words like "husbands" and talking like it's intentionally, onscreen, boys-kissing-boys gay.
On the one hand, no.
On the other hand: Is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid gay? Textually, taking it at face value, and especially considering the context in which it was made, no, it is absolutely not gay, nor was it meant to be gay. But when you step back and realize everything it's doing, you kind of can't avoid the really romantic implications. Maybe Butch and Sundance never smooch, maybe they don't even want to, but they're each other's other halves. We would instantly recognize what they are if one of them were a lady. In a narrative setting where gayness is unthinkable, nothing they can do can be gay, which loops around to making everything kinda gay, and ... look, I'm just saying, if Pangzi were a woman, we'd know immediately what she is to Wu Xie (and holy fuck she would be so hot). If Xiao Hua were as female as the opera characters he plays, we'd have no questions about her relationship to Hei Xiazi. Keep everything beat for beat, line for line the same, and there'd be no missing it.
This is something you get a lot with stories about men written by men, this unintentional homoeroticism from male authors who don't realize their misogyny has actually poisoned them against heterosexuality. Remember what I said earlier about DMBJ's regrettable het? So much of it stems from the assumption that getting a girl and a boy together will inevitably to romantic feelings from at least one of them, so there's no reason to bother spending time giving either of the participants any actual reasons to like one another. (Sand Sea does this too! Just with a character I haven't mentioned here, because I'm trying to talk about the good dynamics.) This kind of thinking treats women not as people, but as as basically interchangeable desirable objects. But men are people, which means the male characters' feelings are worth discussing in the narrative! So what you get is these well-developed, intimate relationships between men described in loving detail, sat right next to perfunctory heterosexual couplings -- and we're supposed to believe that one is romantic and one is not based solely on the genders of the participants? Yeah, no, I call bullshit.
And -- if you'll permit me to loop back to the boys for a minute -- we now have a model for how a straight Iron Triangle would behave, and it is not the way the actual Iron Triangle members are about one another. Those teens love one another in a way that is fierce and strong and not what Wu Xie, Pangzi, and Xiao Ge have going. Maybe it could become that, but it's not now. It's not better or worse now for being what it is, but it is different, and it makes by contrast some things very clear (and very queer).
So that is why I feel justified in referring to them as husbands and will continue to do so despite the lack of explicit textual support.
Anyway, back to Pangzi!
Where were we? Right, Xiuxiu!
Tumblr media
Pangzi's always at his best when he gets to be a knight for someone he cares about. This time around, that's Huo Xiuxiu, who who only shows up after you've met several of her matriarchal family's other members, all of whom would be at home in a Tank Full Of Dangerous Ladies. Xiuxiu is not a fighter like they are, but she does have an object that means everyone's out to get her, and as such she relies on her Pangzi to keep her safe while she's trying to survive the fucked-up games her family is playing.
And Pangzi clearly loves it. He absolutely thrives on being the big brother/bruiser figure for her. He loves how cool it makes him look to her. He doesn't have Wu Xie around to be a tank for, so he's going to tank for her. In fact, he's even going to bring in reinforcements to help him do it. (What's the deal with the cute Tibetan boy? Look, shh, just appreciate that you've got a cute Tibetan boy.)
Tumblr media
Then there's his dealings with the rest of the Tomb-Raiding Industrial Complex, who are a bunch of shady dudes with impressive family pedigrees and expensive suits, all of whom are trying to play twelve-dimensional chess with one another. There's going to be lots of names dropped, of families and of individuals, and the show is going to act like you're supposed to be impressed. And if you're familiar with DMBJ canon, yeah, you could be impressed! Or you could be like Pangzhi, who rolls up in his amazing Holstein shirt, not giving a single fuck what any of these rich bastards think about him.
This is actually some character development for Pangzi, who has in the past been cowed (pun unintended) by the wealthy, mostly due to his own financial situation. That stage of his life is over now. Honey badger has ceased to care. The cool, pretty people are going to try and give him shit, and he is impervious to it. You better believe the Iron Triangle trashed this fancy restaurant the last time they were in here, and if you give Pangzi half the chance, he'll fucking do it again.
No wonder Zhang Rishan likes him. A pair of little firestarters.
Tumblr media
Don't let me oversell you on how much Pangzi is in Sand Sea, because he's not. There's maybe a dozen of the 52 episodes that have any Pangzi content, and he's only in small parts of those episodes. Pangzi is a rare and precious event, like an eclipse. Cherish the Pangzi moments and all the wonderful interactions contained within.
caveat: You call that an ending?
Buddy, if you'd seen how most other DMBJ series end, you wouldn't be asking me that. But because I'm assuming you haven't: Yes, I call that an ending, because it actually attempts to do a winddown and conclusion, instead of just wandering off on a cliffhanger. The ending isn't wholly satisfying, but it is an ending. There is a narrative, and that narrative concludes. Does the conclusion make sense and tie up all the loose ends? Absolutely not! But it does follow basic story structure and resolve the action semi-competently.
As I said about the sweet disaster that is Psych Hunter (which was also directed by the guy who did Sand Sea!), I think knowing in advance that an ending sucks makes the ending suck less. It removes the disappointment factor and lets you enjoy what is there, instead of making you grumpy about what isn't. No, you're never going to understand a lot of things. That means whatever you want to be true can be true. The book is unfinished. The series is nonsense. Canon has no hold on you. You are free.
Tumblr media
As compensation, here's a picture of Xiao Ge without his shirt on.
Are you feeling like it's Tomb Time?
There are a couple places you can get this one! Try Viki, WeTV, this YouTube playlist (which is missing the first episode for some reason), or this YouTube playlist (which has the whole thing). Note that subtitles vary in quality from place to place. The YouTube versions also have the bizarre, amazing in-character commercials, and it's up to you if that's a plus or a minus for your viewing experience.
I love this bonkers show. It is balls-to-the-wall weird, to a point that will make you question the translation. I got to the part where Zhang Rishan explains that ancient people worshipped fish with snakes in their eyebrows, caught the fish, took out the snakes, and implanted the snakes in their own human eyebrows -- and I thought, surely that's not what he's actually saying. Nope! The subtitles are accurate. It's the show that's off its rocker.
Anyway, once you've watched Sand Sea, scroll down to the bottom of my rec post for Reunion and find out how you can get even deeper into said tombs! Trust me, there's a lot down here.
As those other posts would indicate, this would not be my first choice for how to get into DMBJ. It is, however, how a fair number of people have gotten into DMBJ, so what the hell do I know! Or maybe this post has convinced you that Sand Sea is worth watching, but you'd rather build up to it than go into it raw. That works too! Whenever you get to it, it'll be here: under a bunch of sand, tattooed and inexplicable, and extremely gay whether it knows it or not.

ok so i just finished my book cover for First, Best Destiny - Part 1 by the amazing @ophelia-j !!
Tumblr media
admittedly i was going to wait until i actually attached the text block to the cover before i posted this haha, but i was SO excited after making this cover that i decided to just post it and then update with the finished product later!!
this book is absolutely embedded in my soul, and words cannot even describe how gorgeously it’s written. it’s a book that made me realize - hey, the adventure doesn’t end as you grow old.
you can read it here. i promise you won’t regret it!!!
anyways!!! here’s all of my other bookbinding steps for anyone interested.
cam’s somewhat incomplete bookbinding guide
please note that i am an AMATEUR hobbyist. please do not actually use this as a tutorial.
oh also!! bookbinding terminology will have a * by it which will be explained at the end in order to make this flow better. i’ll also link the tutorials i used at the end of this for anyone interested.
1) Formatting the document! I downloaded the original text as a PDF, and then designed a cover page, grabbed some art from the internet (i know, frowned upon, but this is just a personal copy so it is what it is), and then designed a table of contents and chapter icons!!
*side note! i added which episodes each chapter follows to the table of contents (pictured below) as this book was written as an accompaniment to TOS and the movies.
2) Next, I printed out all NINE HUNDRED PAGES??? admittedly i could have done it in less if I’d used a bigger page size, but sending things out to be printed is expensive so we made do. after printing, i folded them into signatures*.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*there’s an additional note about the paper i used at the end
3) punching out holes in all the signatures! although not technically necessary, I honestly don’t think i would’ve been able to sew this behemoth without doing it.
Tumblr media
4) sewing the pages into a real!! actual!! book!! this was the part i was most nervous about. i’ve NEVER attempted to sew anywhere near this large of a book before, so i tried out a new method of sewing in hopes of making it a bit more sturdy. we won’t know if it worked until this book endures some wear and tear, but i’m pretty optimistic!
Tumblr media
5) next up is glueing the spine! this is where it really hit me that a lot of bookbinding is just…glueing shit together. later i also added cardstock to the spine in hopes of helping it adhere to the cover better, and a book headband* for decoration.
Tumblr media
5) now we’re onto the book cover!! they only sell bookboard in minor bulk around here, so we’re not even gonna discuss how much bookboard i now own… anyways! i glued the faux leather onto the bookboard and then let that dry.
Tumblr media
6) last up! off to the cricket! a huge thank you to my friend for letting me borrow her cricket AND supplies! anywho, this is where i designed my cover art. i then adhered the design to the cover. after this step, i realized i…definitely need some kind of sealant - so, if any more seasoned bookbinders have suggestions for this i am all ears!!
Tumblr media
all in all, this was a super fun project, and a great way to kill some time while i recover from surgery! i absolutely plan to bind the sequel at some point, but that may be a…ways away. i’m a STEM major and school starts back up soon so…time will be in short supply lol!
To be continued...
Terminology
*signature: group of sheets folded in half, to be worked into the binding as a unit.
*book headband: just look up a picture if you’re curious because tumblr says i can't add any more pictures lol.
*about the paper!! i actually got it from a local specialty paper store, but if you want something similar i've heard amazon has some good bookbinding alternatives!
Tutorials
please PLEASE go check out Jess Less on youtube. she's phenomenal. here are her vids and what i used them for.
youtube
don't laugh!! i actually stole MOST of my techniques straight from this video.
youtube
i used this one to help me format the book correctly! although i still ended up with some goofs haha (see: any pages on the left side have the page number in the margin LMAO).

Brother's Keeper AU: Aborted Storyline
So! Some of you may remember me saying I was going to address Hunter's sigil. I had 2 out of 4 pages completed and everything, but alas, twas not to be.
Basically, there was going to be a subplot in which Hunter had a Shrodinger's sigil. It starts out fake (on Belos's orders) so he could take it off around Caleb to keep him appeased. But Hunter wanted to prove his worth, so he was going to "convince" Belos to give him a real one and then reverse the concealment charm to make Caleb think he still didn't have one.
He was also going to bury his book on wild magic and then dramatically dig it up again later?? Because metaphors.
These pages in particular were going to be inserted after part 11.
Anyway, the subplot's no longer needed. Unless I change my mind, in which case y'all definitely saw NONE of this, shh!!! But I might still upload the incomplete pages later for kicks idk

annabeth chase and her many losing dogs: an (incomplete) anthology
read on ao3
or
chapter one: a (brief) introduction to the game and it's players
She gives Cerberus her red rubber ball.
Because he’s a monster, but she doesn’t think he means to be.
Because he’s a lonely dog and she is lonely the same way. The kind that doesn’t know how lonely it is until a person shows up and reminds them. The kind that wishes to just be left in loneliness long enough for companionship to be forgotten altogether.
The ball will make him happy. He will destroy it within minutes, it will disappear after he does nothing but be himself.
(She does that sometimes too.)
First Round: Frederick Chase
Bet Type: Blind Faith; awarded via mass tradition.
Made with no experience.
Trust given without the knowledge that trust must be earned.
Annabeth is four years old and hungry.
She hasn’t eaten since dinner last night.
Dad is playing with his planes again. The fancy small piece ones that Annabeth is not allowed to touch, ‘not now, not ever.’ She’s not supposed to bother Dad when he plays with his planes.
Plane time is Dad’s very special ‘by himself’ time. He’d explained a while ago that he has lots of very hard work to do, and then he has to take care of her which is even more lots of hard work,  and sometimes he needs his special ‘by himself’ time, because Annabeth is a big girl now who can read her books and not touch the sockets.
(She wonders why he doesn’t do his special ‘by himself’ time when she’s taking her naps. That way they could have their together time when she’s awake.)
This would be fine, but she just ate the last of her super secret dad-is-in-his-study snack stash that she hides under her bed last week.
She wants to go in and ask, but the last time she’d interrupted him, even though he smiled at her, his eyebrows got all scrunched up together. He was not happy to see her.
(Sometimes, she wonders if he ever is.)
Annabeth is really very hungry.
There are bananas on top of the fridge.
Annabeth creates a plan.
The plan goes south almost immediately and she ends up dangling from the top of the white mountain with glass and bananas all over the ground.
“Christ! Annabeth!” She is being yanked from her very small cliff and carried into the living room and Dad’s voice is very loud and his face is more than scrunched eyebrows and Annabeth is ashamed.
“What were you doing?”
“I was climbing on top of the fridge. I knocked over a vase.”
That was the wrong answer because somehow his face gets even angrier. “Yes, I can see that. What were you thinking?”
“I wanted a banana. They were on top of the fridge.”
He pinches his nose. That wasn’t the right answer either. “You just had breakfast.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Yes, you did. You had the fruit circles.”
“That was yesterday.”
He hesitates. “Okay, well you did wake up late, you couldn’t have waited until it was time to eat lunch?”
The clock on the microwave says 4:13 pm. “It is lunch.”
He looks at the clock. Closes his eyes. When he opens them, he still looks angry but not at her. His voice is much quieter. “Why didn’t you come get me?”
“Last time you got sad. You were in a groove, you said unless it was an emergency not to come in. I thought I could reach it.”
She watches his face change. His eyebrows are still scrunched up but his eyes get gentler and sadder all at once. He sits down on the couch and lifts her up into his lap. It’s been so long, she sits on his knees like he’s a chair. He turns her around in his arms.
“You’re such a quiet kid, Annabeth. Sometimes I forget you're here.”
She doesn’t think he said it to make her sad, but it does anyway. Which is irritating because she didn’t do anything wrong and she feels bad anyway.
“I was a quiet kid too.”
She doesn’t want to be quiet. She wants to scream. She wants to cry. She wants to hit him. She wants—
“I’m gonna clean up the glass and then we’ll have mac and cheese.”
She nods and lets herself be sat back on the couch.
Second Round: Ms. Helen (from Dad’s work)
Bet Type: Good Faith; awarded via proxy.
Made with no experience.
Trust given without the knowledge that trust must be earned.
The first time her father forgets to pick her up from daycare, she is too young to remember. She was also too young to remember the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th times.
She remembers the sixth.
Ms. Helen, dad’s work friend that has come to dinner  every wednesday for four weeks, shows up at school wearing black yoga pants and a messy-on-purpose bun.
(The kind that always looks strange in the bathroom mirror when she tries it on her curls in the morning before they leave.)
She smiles at her teacher, tight and pinchy. She does that laugh/talk/sigh thing adults do when the words they're saying don’t really matter. And before Annabeth knows it, she's staring at the backseat of a minivan.
“What’s that?”
Ms. Helen raises an eyebrow. “The car seat?”
Annabeth nods but looks down. She said it like it was obvious. Annabeth knows obvious things.
“Don’t you sit in one of  these to come to daycare?”
“No.”
“You just sit in the seat?”
“Yes.”
“You're too little. It’s not safe to sit by yourself.”
Annabeth doesn’t know what she's supposed to say. This happens a lot. Adults do this thing where they ask you a question that they want a specific answer to. Annabeth has developed a skill in which she can always tell when the truth is not what an adult wants to hear. It has, so far, been a pretty useless skill because she has yet to master the skill of knowing what it is that they actually want to hear.
(Sometimes, she figures it out and tells the truth anyway. Those times she doesn’t really mind getting in trouble after.)
“Your father must’ve put you in one of these.”
Annabeth shrugs. Her talent has deduced that Helen does not want Annabeth to say that she has never been in one of those, and figures nonverbal is the safest option because she would like to go home.
Helen crouches down and gets way up close to Annabeth's face. Her grown-up face-paint is smudged around the corner of her left eye. She smells like dish soap.
“I borrowed this from my friend when your father called, so we have to get you your own. From now on, you don’t get in a car without one of these. Understand?”
Annabeth nods.
Helen is looking at her with something strange and sad in her smudged up eye. She takes a deep breath.
Annabeth crawls into the backseat and waits to be tied in.
Fourth Round: Thalia Grace, Grover Underwood & Luke Castellan
Bet Type: Calculated Risk; awarded to an individual after carefully evaluated outcomes
Made after a great loss, in which perceived benefits outweigh potential detriment.
Trust earned after a win.
Thalia is frowning at her.
Annabeth hasn’t been with her and Luke for that long, but she knows that this is not cause for too much concern because she’s usually frowning.
Luke is the one with the smiles, and the cuddles, and the soft spot for the helpless strays—dogs and girls alike.
Thalia is the one with the frowns.
(Annabeth can tell she has a soft spot for Luke though.)
Before she can muster up the courage to ask, Luke beats her to it. “What’s up with you?”
“Her hair.” Thalia has a talent where she can frown and speak at the same time. Annabeth wants to learn how to do that.
Luke smiles at her before fixing his eyes on her puff. She gets that feeling in her stomach she used to get when her teachers asked her questions about her house, like she should be hiding behind her fathers legs.
(The last time she tried, Helen had snatched her arm and told her she was being rude.)
“Her hair.” He repeats in a way that tells both Annabeth and Thalia he has no idea what the problem is.
Thalia ignores him, and scribbles something down on his arm. “I saw a beauty supply store down the road. I need you to figure out a way to get this stuff.”
Luke frowns over her shoulder. (Uh-oh.) “That’s gonna be a bit of a stretch.”
“So stretch.”
“Thals—,”
She looks up at him and her eyes are all intense like when she’s fighting a monster. “They weren’t combing her hair. I took the hair tie off and it’s staying put. She’s only been on the run for 3 days.” Thalia looks back down at her. “Right? That’s how long you were by yourself?”
“Yes.” Annabeth nods. One of her favorite parts about being with Luke and Thalia, is that the truth is always enough.
Thalia looks back at Luke with something in her eyes that’s even softer than when Luke sleeps. “They weren’t combing her hair.”
Luke nods, a new kind of frown. The one he had when they found her. “On it.”
He winks at Annabeth and tweaks her nose which makes her laugh. Then he’s gone and it’s just the two of them.
Annabeth and Thalia have never been alone for that long before, except for bathroom trips and when Luke gets them snacks.
Annabeth knows it wasn’t Thalia’s idea for her to join the two of them. Annabeth doesn’t think she wanted to leave her there, but she knows Thalia liked it when it was just her and Luke.
She’s looking up at the sky muttering something angry in another language. “What’s Luke going to get?”
Thalia considers her for a moment and then sits down leaning against the brick alleyway. “Some hair stuff. Basics.”
“I thought we only took risks for food.”
Thalia smiles a little and it makes Annabeth's chest feel fuzzy.
“You’re a smart kid.” She pats the ground next to her and Annabeth goes to sit next to her.
“My mother…had a bad time. Things that aren’t supposed to be hard for mortals were very hard for her. And sometimes that made her not very nice to me.” She pauses and Annabeth waits patiently, doesn’t dare speak a word.
“She couldn’t really take care of herself. So, she couldn’t really take care of me either. My hair is curly like yours. And hair like ours needs special attention. When you don’t give it the care it needs, it gets stuck like this.” She takes Annabeth's hand and brings it up to her head, lets her tug on one strand gently.
“I like your hair a lot!”
“Thank you. I do too. But, it wasn’t my choice. My mother let my hair loc up so she didn’t have to comb it every day. You should get to decide whether you want your hair like this. Did you ask to have your hair up in a bun for that long?”
Annabeth could tell her how her Dad used to braid her hair on Sunday nights. How they would sit and listen to music and he would spray and comb and braid until she fell asleep on his leg. How when he and Helen got married, he suddenly had no time to do anything that Helen could do instead. How her slick, shiny, and smooth haired stepmother would wrinkle down at her curls, yank a brush through her head and tell her she was ‘impossible’.
But, she doesn’t. She looks down at her shoes and doesn’t say anything at all.
Thalia, even smaller than before, says, “Your parents weren’t very nice to you either. Were they?”
She doesn’t answer.
She doesn’t have to.
‘You’re such a quiet kid, Annabeth.’
(When Luke gets back, he and Thalia spend three hours spraying and combing and braiding until Annabeths hair isn’t stuck anymore.)
(In a few months, a satyr named Grover will take them to camp.
Thalia will not make it across the border.)
(Annabeth will refuse to let anyone touch her hair for a year.)
Final Round: Perseus Jackson
Bet Type: Wild Card; awarded to an individual that fails to qualify through conventional procedure.
Made with gut feelings, no logic, and excruciating human defiance.
Trust is given without measure.
Annabeth's first thought when she sees him for the first time is, “He must be the one.”
She’s sure of it. She says it out loud. Chiron tells her to hush, and she doesn’t even care.
He's the one.
She's not sure how she knows. She's waited for so long, seen so many campers. Many were far more promising than he is.
That's her second thought. He's skinnier than she thought ‘the one’ would be. Skinny and pale and more gangly limb than person.
He’s blinking up towards them but his eyes are unfocused and hazy. That's her third thought. He's fading. They’ll have to carry him.
‘Percy’ Chiron calls him. It’s a hero’s name.
She wonders if whoever gave it to him knew he’d be the one too.
‘He’s the one.’, she thinks again. It feels strange and tingly in her head.
Strange, but not false.
Hello, Percy Jackson. It's nice to finally meet you.

a/n :
don't come for me. I know this is dark but I had to motivate myself to write this story as a backstory for one of my other projects, so I had to transpose SKZ over it or I would never get it done. In ten years, if any of you see this plot in a sucky indie book on a random Goodwill bookshelf, no you didn't.
a/n 2 :
This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents either are products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.
Or something like that.
so...I don't actually know SKZ? [If I personally knew Han and Lee Know well enough to accurately represent them in a story like this I would—] so, yeah, anyways those guys are real people who do great things in the entertainment industry and the characters named after them in this story are fake people. Hope that clears things up.

Penmanship
Tumblr media
Satoru Gojo x Gender neutral Reader
series: incomplete
words: 1.7k
warnings: none apply; funny; meet-ugly: no mentioned female or male anatomy; no spoilers; no curses; slow build; slow to update; college au
summary: Some weird guy just stole your pen. And you’re weirdly determined to get it back.
part 1 part 2 part 3 part 4 part 5…+
Tumblr media
“Do you have a pencil I can borrow?” someone asks from your left.
You turn your head first before you look at the stranger, making sure the professor was no longer speaking before giving the person your full attention and looking at them. When you look over you’re met with a bright (too bright) smile, huge dark sunglasses that take up most of the strangers face, and in stark contrast, blindingly white hair. You're sure if you saw this man in direct sunlight your retinas would be burnt to a crisp.
Then you turn to your right to look into your bag on the floor. You instinctively look for your pencil pouch, but you can’t seem to find it. What you do find is a bright red sparkly gel pen, with a Hello Kitty charm on top and a dangling silver chain with a red fuzzy ball hanging from it. You smile to yourself thinking of the person this pen belongs to, then you wonder how your niece left her pen in your book bag.
You wordlessly hand the pen to the stranger and turn your attention back to the professor who started her lecture again. You can feel the question resting on his tongue before he even says it.
“What’s this?” he chuckles at you. And admittedly, that question irks your nerves a bit. Dude can clearly see what it is. Why is he asking? To make fun of you? Well jokes on him because you have no shame about handing over a Hello Kitty pen.
“A pen.” You respond, not breaking your focus from the professor.
“This,” he swings the fuzzy ball around, “is your pen?” he laughs again. Mostly to himself you realize, and you kind of want to say yes to his question out of spite. But to be fair, you are currently wearing all black and oversized clothing with the whole look being pulled together with your dark under eyes and an expression longing for death that any college student could recognize and sympathize with. Any other day you would’ve had the energy to present yourself better, but you just pulled an all-nighter to study for a test you have tomorrow. that you didn't know you had till yesterday.
“No. It’s my niece's,” you respond, still not giving the stranger your full attention. The guy doesn’t seem to mind because he keeps the conversation going anyway, despite your dry attitude.
“Oh, do you live at home?” He seems genuinely curious. Which you find odd. You’ve never talked to this guy a day in your life and suddenly he wants to play twenty questions with you.
“No. I have my own place,”
“Then how did you get your niece’s pen?” He questions. Like he doesn’t believe that you were telling the truth about it not being your pen.
“I visited my family over the weekend,” you say, a little irritated.
“Then they must live close. Y’know, for you to be able to get back in time for classes,” he says like he’s suggesting something. Like you’re lying. You look at him then with a pointed glare. It’s when you see the smirk on his face that tells you that this man is playing with you. He’s most likely getting you worked up on purpose.
But why?
And that just pisses you off more.
“Why are you asking so many questions anyway? Who are you? Detective Sherlock Holmes?” you say, still glaring at him, as he continues to smirk at you. His smirk widens.
“No reason, was just curious to know how you possessed such a cute pen,” Then his smirk changed into a big smile, the teasing air gone. But you know he’s faking that smile. You’re not sure how you know, you just do. You leave it there and turn back to taking notes. Luckily the stranger does too.
It stays silent between the two of you for the rest of class and the few glances you chanced at him he seemed to actually be taking notes. He also didn’t seem the least bit bothered by the glittery red ink filling the pages either. You would have thought he was going to make a comment on it at least. He didn’t even seem to look your way at all. Which was fine. But it made you wonder what made him tease you the way he did even though you don’t know each other.
You guess he’s just a weird guy.
Class ends and before you can even close your notebook, Sherlock is out of his seat and walking out the door.
“Hey!” you yell after him, it’s then you realize you don’t know this guy’s name. “Crap,” you curse softly before you hurry and try to stuff your things into your bag. By the time you get one strap on your shoulder you see his mop of white hair walk through the door. You try to weave your way through people walking down the aisle towards the door, almost trip a few times, then finally make it to the exit. You look both ways through the sea of people. He’s gone.
He’s gone? You literally just saw him two seconds ago. He just disappeared like he’s fucking Houdini or something. How is he gone? Fuck. You need that pen back. It was your niece's favorite pen. You were already expecting a call from her today because she had left it in your bag, but now you gotta tell her some stranger stole it? She’s going to be so upset.
You stand there next to the door of your professor's class just a minute longer, looking both ways in hopes you’ll see blinding white hair. But you are supremely sure that the stranger is long gone. But you’re not discouraged. He’ll surely be in class tomorrow and you’ll be able to ask for it then.
Yeah. That’s a solid plan. Now you just gotta figure out what you’re gonna say to your niece in the meantime. And when you feel your phone start to vibrate in your pocket, you sweat a little.
Tumblr media
When you come to the same class the next day (even more tired than yesterday, and yes it was another all-nighter) you expect to see the guy sitting there at the beginning of your row. Where he usually sits.
You hadn’t realized this yesterday but you actually have talked to this guy before. It was such a small interaction that happened months ago, you’re not surprised your brain erased the memory. When school had just started you always sat at the very beginning of the third row. You already knew coming into class that you wanted the aisle seat so it was easy access to slip out of the room the minute class was over. The eager study-goers and teachers' pets were bright and early, taking up the first two rows, and the slackers, sleepers, and stoners (or people who liked sitting in the back?) all took up the seats in the last two rows. Ta-da. Third row it was.
You sat there for about a week listening to this professor go over her syllabus, course, rules, etc. for a whole week. Then once that second week rolled around you came into class like normal and probably about twenty minutes into the class the door rips open, and in enters Sherlock Houdini (who was known at the time as: annoyingly loud handsome guy that talks too much). The professor looked about just as annoyed as you did. You brushed it off, meanwhile Sherlock Houdini was getting an earful about tardiness, and the professor got an earful herself about ‘ letting loose ‘. You definitely rolled your eyes.
He had finally gone to take a seat, but had unfortunately walked right up to you. He looked at you (or at least you think he did. Even with light shining directly through them you couldn’t see what he was hiding behind those sunglasses), and you looked back. You scooted your chair up thinking he wanted to get behind you, but he just kept looking at you. Then he smiled.
You remember thinking that his smile was very pretty. But also thinking that him smiling at you at that moment was creepy.
“You’re in my seat,” he said, still smiling.
“What?” You said back, furrowing your brows. You’ve literally sat in the seat everyday up until that moment and have never seen this guy once come to class. How in the world could this be his seat?
“You’re in my seat,” he repeated. He said it in a way that made you feel like you were the dumb one. It pissed you off and made you want to stand your ground.
“This is my seat,” you replied.
“Funny. I don’t see your name on it,” He chuckled back, still smiling. It felt very condescending.
“I could say the same for you,” you folded your arms and laid back in the chair to look up at him properly. You remember thinking this guy was really tall.
“Young man,” He turned to look at the professor, “could you please sit down,” she piped up, a little irritated. He looked back you, same stupid smile and said:
“Yeah, can I please sit down?” That almost made you throw your notebook at his face. Instead you leveled with him. You stared straight into what you think were his eyes, testing his patience, Anyone else would give up and find a different seat. But he leveled back. He crossed his arms as well and stared into your soul.
You both looked at each other for maybe another minute and half, then the professor cleared her throat loud enough to be heard by the whole room. That broke your patience. You scoffed as you scooted one seat. There were plenty of seats further down the row, but you wanted this guy to know that if he was gonna take your seat, you weren’t about to let him have his space.
He smiled and thanked you as he plopped down into your seat and got ready to take notes. You didn’t talk again after that.
Well, until now that is. You’re waiting for this prick of a guy to get into class so you can get the damn pen back. But he has yet to show up and class is almost over.
It’s whatever though because you can always ask him tomorrow. After all, It’s only Tuesday.

remember this one perpollo fic that was just so good. it was a oneshot i think, and i forget the name and i'm going through my bookmarks but i can't seem to find it. (i'll link it if i do! or if anyone remembers the name-)
but i remember it was like, this intense world-building where there literally was a war between the demigods and gods. like they were full on killing the gods and eating(?) i think, their hearts and consuming their essence. and yet some of the gods were, while def at war with the demigods, still careful and caring for their kids, or at least the implication was there, with poseidon not going after percy, and apollo unleashing a plague on the demigds, but tailored so that it would not affect his kids.
and i love that fic, and i LOVE perpollo, but rn im in a very permes mood, so im kinda thinking abt a permes take.
espcially as i just finished reading Lore by Alexandra Bracken, in which descendants of heroes (like the house of odysseus, the house of heracles, the house of theseues, the house of Iason, etc.) have a three day hunger-games like thing called the Agon, where seven (i think it was seven) gods (as a punishment from zeus for trying to overthrow him) get turned mortal and can actually be killed, with the promise that whichever hero kills them, gets to become the new god. of course, to keep it fair, this "new god" can also be killed in the next agon by another hero and have their power taken. i think i remember these gods as poseidon, hermes, dionysus, the twins, athena, and ares. also aphrodite, so maybe it was eight.
(this was tragic for me bc i was attached to WAY TOO MANY (like 4?) of the gods before i even started the book considering my love for pjo lol, and i didnt want to see them go)
but now im just thinking of it, a war, demigods v gods, maybe after the giant war? idk. and its such a complex position for percy bc he hates the gods! he does! but he cares about his father. he cares for hermes. and yet he also cares abt his fellow demogods, his friends, his family. he is loyal to his core, but he is also just very tired.
and then, what do the others think regarding percy anyways? the gods will see him as a weapon no longer in their hands. the demigods see their friend yes, but also the kid who DOES care about his dad and is loyal--the guy who was close to ascending on his own right down there in tartarus before he somehow stopped himself.
like. its so interesting and i do want to do smth with that, but i also have like. three other permes ideas, one of which already has a 13 page incomplete outline written out, and that has actually stumped me on how to continue it for like, the past year and a half, so. who knows if i'll even manage to commit. but im def toying with this, its been on my mind for the past few weeks.
EDIT: found the fic! its here

Read Chapter 4 below, or at the above link on AO3
---------------------------------
“Jenny, can you help me with these boxes?” Hob calls out to the kitchen as his supplier finishes unloading their cargo from the delivery truck. It’s early, and only the two of them are at the Inn at present. Hob had told Jenny that she didn’t need to come in the mornings when she’d first started, but the former butcher had wandered in anyways on her first week, claiming she needed to do something with her jet lag or she’d go insane.
Almost two months later, Jenny’s still on the morning shift most days and Hob’s grateful for it, honestly. Having run her own place back in the states means she’s efficient, and doesn’t take any nonsense when suppliers are late or trying to argue with him. She’s also great for commiserating with, whether it’s about customer service or really annoying supernatural occurrences. Like the poltergeist in her apartment that the boys had to exorcise the week before.
When they’re done unloading everything, Hob stays back in the kitchen to put everything away, while Jenny gets ready for opening. There’s not usually a lot of people right at opening, except on Sundays, when all the hungover university students are craving brunch, so Hob’s not worried about leaving Jenny alone out there while he preps in the back.
When he finally emerges a little after 1:00pm, right when the lunch rush starts to pick up, one of his newer regulars is chatting happily with Jenny, and he can tell by her body language that she seems utterly charmed by the American.
“She seems nice,” Hob teases his newest employee later. “Pretty too.”
“Yeah I’m not—really into blondes,” Jenny replies, and something about the caginess in her voice tells Hob that there’s a story behind that. He’s not sure if it’s related to how she ended up with the Dead Boy Detective Agency or not, but he makes a note to ask Edwin about it later. He was coming by later to look at Hob’s tomes again to see if there was a spell in there that could help with their latest case.
“Ah well, plenty of fish in the sea,” Hob says easily. “Especially when you go from living in a small town in America to great old London. How are you adjusting, by the way?”
Jenny happily accepts the subject change and takes the opportunity to complain about her flat. The boys had exorcised the poltergeist, but not before it had flung nearly all of her belongings about the entire place, and put a few holes she’d have to fix before her landlord noticed. Hob had offered to help her find a new place while the whole incident was occurring, but Jenny had been stubborn and refused to move. Still is refusing to move, in fact.
Godspeed to her, Hob thinks. Hopefully another ghost won’t move in.
---------------------------------
“Niko attempted to play matchmaker with Jenny by arranging her to meet with her secret admirer,” Edwin tells him later that afternoon as he peruses the pages of one of Hob’s, or rather Mad Hettie’s, cursebreaker books. “Unfortunately, Maxine also revealed herself to be Jenny’s stalker, and when she saw that made Jenny uncomfortable, tried to kill her.”
“Oh bloody hell,” Hob says, nearly choking on his tea. “Yeah, I’d swear off dating for a while too.”
“Indeed,” Edwin says, flipping through the pages of a particularly heavy looking volume. “Relationships seem so much more…complicated in this day and age,” Edwin notes casually. Hob studies him for a moment, wondering if Edwin had come to talk to him about something that wasn’t quite related to his work.
“They are,” Hob agrees, taking another sip of his tea. “But there’s a lot more freedom too. You can choose who you love now, regardless of status, race, religion or…gender,” he adds, carefully studying Edwin’s face for some sort of reaction.
“Ah ha! Found it,” Edwin exclaims, either completely ignoring Hob’s comment, or too caught up in his discovery to notice what the immortal had said. He looks up at Hob and smiles. “Do you mind if I borrow this for our case? I promise to bring it back unharmed.”
“Go ahead,” Hob nods, waving casually. Edwin snaps the book shut and heads towards the door of Hob’s flat, then abruptly stops. Something tenses in the boy’s shoulders and Hob thinks he can guess what it is Edwin wants to ask him.
“Mr Gadling?” Edwin asks, turning back around to face him.
“Hob,” Hob corrects him. “What is it? Did you need something else?”
“No I—this is a more—personal question, if you wouldn’t mind,” Edwin says, his tone now shy instead of confident like it had been moments before.
“All right,” Hob says, shrugging and trying to look as non-threatening as possible. “What is it?”
Edwin’s face goes through a multitude of emotions before the boy finally seems to find the words he’s looking for.
“How long have you known your proclivities tended towards men as well as women?” Edwin asks, and the bluntness of the question causes Hob to choke on his biscuit. He coughs violently into his sleeve, which catches most of the small crumbs he manages to dislodge from his throat. When he looks up next, Edwin is staring curiously at him, arms wrapped around the book he’d decided to borrow, waiting for Hob to answer his question.
“Uhhhh…” Hob coughs again, then gulps down the rest of his tea, dislodging the last of the offending biscuit. “I guess since the 14th or 15th century?” he says uncertainly, flailing about as he tries to recall the first time he’d ever fancied a man. “I know when you were alive there was all this—” he gestures vaguely, “nonsense around homosexuality, but well—things weren’t always like that. So I guess I’ve known for. A while,” he finishes somewhat lamely.
Edwin sighs, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth. He looks like he wants to follow up on his question, but doesn’t seem to know how.
“Something you want to talk about?” Hob asks after a brief silence. Edwin sighs again, then steps back towards the living room, and Hob makes a mental note to make more tea for this longer conversation.
“It was brought to my attention recently that I am in love with my best friend,” Edwin says, still as straightforward as ever. “But I assume you already knew that.”
Hob shrugs helplessly, not willing to confirm or deny his conversation with Charles. Edwin seems to understand the gesture immediately though.
“I don’t require the details of your conversations with Charles,” Edwin follows up. “However, I suppose I am seeking some—commiseration. For a broken heart.”
“Well, you’ve come to the right spot,” Hob says with a soft smile. “I know a thing or two about unrequited love with your best friend and all that.”
Edwin tilts his head curiously. “You are speaking of your patron? Death’s brother?”
Hob chokes again, this time only on air.
“Why,” Hob groans, burying his face in his hands, “Does everyone seem to know this?!”
“I am a detective,” Edwin replies, deadpan. “However, you are also extremely obvious in your affections. Perhaps more so than Charles is about Crystal, and that is a feat, I assure you,” he adds, rolling his eyes.
Before Hob can retort that he is very much not obvious, and that Edwin himself is oblivious to just how affectionate Charles is about him, there’s a loud rapping at the front door, which causes both Hob and Edwin to jolt in surprise.
“Oy, Hobsie! Open up, I need your help with something!” a female voice yells from the other side of his door. Hob sighs, knowing the source of the voice all too well, and then reluctantly gets up from his comfortable position on the couch to answer the door.
Johanna Constantine strides in without so much as a hello, making a beeline straight for his study, but then stops suddenly, making direct eye contact with Edwin.
“Hobsie, don’t be alarmed but there’s a dead child in you flat right now,” Johanna says. “And it looks like he’s stealing one of your books.”
Edwin scoffs. “Excuse you, I am borrowing this tome, with permission, I may add.”
“Right,” Hob interjects before Johanna can get another word in. “Jo, this is Edwin, Edwin, this is Johanna Constantine,” he says gesturing between the two of them. “We’re all friends here, no one’s stealing anything.”
“Oh, a Constantine!” Edwin exclaims with delight. “How ever did you get involved with her?” he asks, turning to Hob.
“Long story, kid, but I don’t have time for that right now, I need some help with a case,” Johanna says. “Unless you’ve got any expertise on weird fish men who live in swamps and eat people.”
“Actually, I do,” Edwin says, much to the shock of both Johanna and Hob. “1974,” he adds, as if this explains everything. “I’m happy to help, and I’d love to pick your brain on an old cursed fountain pen, while we’re at it, if you wouldn’t mind.”
Johanna stares at Edwin for a moment, her eyes narrowing.
“You’re those ghost investigators or something, aren’t you?” she asks. “I’d heard of you, but I hadn't realized you were actual children.”
Edwin scoffs. “We are the Dead Boy Detectives, thank you very much, Miss Constantine,” he says. “Now would you like our help or not?”
---------------------------------
A week later, Hob is questioning whether he should’ve introduced Johanna and Edwin as he hangs suspended above a supposedly haunted pond.
“Are you sure this is safe?” Hob yells from his precarious position.
“Don’t worry Hobsie!” Johanna yells back as she adjusts the rope to lower Hob closer to the pond. Hob swears he hears a weird growling coming from below the water’s surface. “This shouldn't be low enough to kill you, I think,” Johanna continues. “And anyways, if it is, you’ll just come back!”
“THAT DOESN’T MEAN I WANT TO DIE IN THE FIRST PLACE JO!” Hob shouts back.
“Not to worry Mr Gadling!” Edwin pipes in. “Charles and I shall ensure your library is well guarded should you unexpectedly perish and we’ll help Jenny out the Inn. Crystal is also quite experienced at sneaking bodies out of hospitals.”
“That was one time!” Crystal exclaims indignantly.
“If you die, do I still get paid on Friday?” Jenny, who has inexplicably decided to tag along for this case, asks. “Or is there like, a 3-5 business day turnaround for resurrection?”
“You better still pay her, Hobsie!” Johanna chimes in, and Hob can see her grinning devilishly at his employee. “A girl’s gotta eat after all,” she adds with a wink towards her.
Terrible. These people were all terrible and he was going to have to die and start over with a new life. And he was going to find some new friends while he was at it too.
---------------------------------
Hob doesn’t die, but he does lose a chunk of shoulder to what’s later revealed to be some half shark, half man monstrosity. At least the damage from that will be gone by tomorrow. Hopefully anyways. Even if Hob did have to cover it up, it certainly wouldn't take nearly as long to heal as a whole resurrection does.
“Jenny is romantically available, by the way,” Hob hears Edwin tell Johanna in a low voice once he's been let down and wrapped in five layers of bandages.
“Is she now?” Johanna asks, in a tone Hob knows is definitely interested. “And you’re so interested in my love life because—?”
Edwin shrugs, and Hob catches the barest hint of a smile on his face.
“I think you’d like each other,” is all he says, enigmatic as ever.
“Are you trying to play matchmaker to distract yourself from your own love life?” Hob asks Edwin later when the boy comes to return Hob’s book. “Because I can tell you from first hand experience it only makes you more sad when you do that.”
Edwin hums. “It’s something Niko would’ve wanted to do,” he says. “She felt so bad after the whole thing with Maxine. But she’s no longer here, so I’ll have to do it in her memory. At least this time I can guarantee Miss Constantine is not a serial killer. The rest of her character though...I suppose she seems...pleasant?”
Hob howls with laughter. “Yeah okay, that’s fair. Need some help with your little scheme then?”
Edwin’s eyes dance with mischief and delight, and Hob’s painfully reminded of Robyn in that moment. He’s never had another child with anyone else besides Eleanor, not knowingly anyways. Being a father was far too painful when you would easily outlive your own child.
But Edwin was already dead, and would be around forever, just like Hob, so perhaps it was inevitable that Hob would love him like a son.
“Okay, so let me tell you what I know about Johanna—”

My honest, and slightly brutal review of the ‘Priscilla’ movie.
Tumblr media
So, i did find this movie online just because it isn’t out in my country until mid january. (not like i was gonna pay for it anyway.) This is my opinion, as everyone else has one. Spoiler warning maybe?
Now, it is important to note that i tried to be completely unbiased watching this movie, to put away any feelings i had towards Priscilla or even Elvis for that matter… but…
There is something about this movie that throws me off. It almost feels incomplete in a way, like there are bits missing? and yes, i do understand that you can only fit so much into 1 hour and 50 odd minutes, but why am i still watching them before their wedding 1 hour and 20 minutes into the film as if from the wedding onwards didn’t matter? It kind of feels like the movie should’ve ended there, but it didn’t. it just keep dragging on into an unbearable and boring ending. I’m sure that if someone hadn’t read into what really happened in the events leading up to their divorce, they would be confused. Tell us what happened instead of being under the assumption that everyone knows.
To me, i find that some scenes that happened in this movie are quite comparable to Baz Lurhmann’s ‘Elvis.’ And yes, im not an idiot, i know it’s her ‘story’ of what happened, but it was poorly executed and anticlimactic. It seems to me that this movie goes at a snails pace compared to Lurhmann’s. ‘Priscilla’ did nothing for me to keep me intrigued.
What also has really rubbed me the wrong way about this movie, is the fact that this portrayal really paints Priscilla as the angel. There is barely anything in this movie, compared to her book, that shows her in a bad light. Her book, whether fact or fiction, has that human side to her, shows her flaws, whereas this movie, she is deemed as flawless, and instead giving all of the flaws to Elvis.
Yes, we all know Elvis wasn’t the perfect man, or even flawless, but it is evident in this movie that he is the villain. Throwing chairs, drug use, cheating etc. Yet, these are still things we see in this day and age, why must we think that’s really abnormal and villainize it just because it’s Elvis Presley?
I also wanna add, i feel like this movie was made incredibly cheap and quick, the whole movie feels like a school project and a bad coming of age movie that cable tv plays during the day to pass time, there’s a certain tackiness to it. It’s an okay movie, if it was completely fiction and written about two completely fictional characters and didn’t drag someone’s legacy in the mud.
There is so much about this movie to talk about but it makes me angry so i’ll stop here.
All in all, would i pay to watch it? absolutely not. Save your money.
4/10 and that’s being generous. it gave… absolutely nothing.

Hi......If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
Hmm, let's see! I'm quite bad a ranking things, so here's a tentative list of my current faves:
10. MILGRAM Project
Tumblr media
This one is a little more recent for me, as my sister got me into it. MILGRAM is an interactive music video project, and while I'm not the biggest fan of DECO*27's music, I love the idea that this project presents. You're able to vote if a character is forgiven or unforgiven based off of the information given through a music video. I quite like some of the representation it has, especially with it having a character with DID.
9. Monster (Naoki Urasawa)
Tumblr media
It's just a manga (and anime!) I like a lot due to it's compelling storytelling and antagonist. It was also cool being able to point out actual locations from the series in Germany.
8. To Your Eternity
Tumblr media
While I fell of a little bit from the manga, this series still holds a place in my heart. (The Previous Era, at least.) The manga especially is so heartfelt, emotional, and spiritual, with it's exploration of humanity as a concept. And it contains best boy Kahaku,
7. Cardcaptor Sakura
Tumblr media
It may be the nostalgia talking, but I love this series so much. It's so sweet and adorable, and some very sweet LGBT representation. Anyways, Sakura is my icon.
6. Lacey Games Series
Tumblr media
Lacey Games, being an indie horror series by creator Ghosttundra, holds a special place in my heart. Though short and still incomplete, it's exploration of abuse and trauma through a horror format is beautiful and compelling.
5. Bocchi the Rock!
Tumblr media
I feel so represented by Bocchi. Never before has anything conveyed what it feels like to have social anxiety while being so hilarious and fun.
4. Monogatari Series
Tumblr media
I have an insanely complicated relationship with this series. On one hand, it's problematic and has elements that I find horrific. But on the other hand, it contains so many stories of young women overcoming trauma and adversity, creating a very powerful narrative about the struggles of growing up. Also I love Senjougahara.
3. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Tumblr media
Evangelion is dear to me because of when I watched it. Without going into details, it really swooped in at one of the worst points in my life, and allowed me to feel. It's a capsule of loneliness.
2. Revolutionary Girl Utena
Tumblr media
It's the ultimate queer girl revolution. Besides it's strange and unconventionalness that I love, Utena tells a story of escaping the cycle of abuse, and all the details that perpetuate it.
1. Oyasumi Punpun
Tumblr media
I have no words besides it's the best thing I have ever read, and that I will never read again. Nothing will describe the feelings that it gives.
