Happy INSIDE Day to those who celebrate! 🥳
Tumblr media
Yes, it's been THREE years since Bo Burnham graced the world with his masterpiece, and it is the two-year anniversary of my website (when I was the Bo Burnham Historian).
So much has happened since I first saw Bo with his disco ball at 4am 3 years ago. I met my best friends through our love of the special, saw Rothaniel being taped (and got to stare into Bo's eyes in person lol), saw KATE three times (Bo was at all of the performances), and accomplished my bucket list item of seeing my top 5 comedians!
I've also gone through a lot of personal changes: I started therapy, cut off my parents after coming out as bi, had a nervous breakdown, separated from my husband of 14 years on July 26, and met the love of my life in January 2024. Jeff and I moved in together at the end of March, and I started a new job working on AI after being in Marketing for six years.
With all of those changes, one thing has remained the same—Bo is still my number-one comedian and Inside is my favorite movie of all time (yes, it's a film, dammit!).
How are you planning to celebrate the occasion? I'm going to watch the special and the Outtakes tonight...and see if I can spot any more Easter eggs lol
Keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Hi, everyone!
Today's #FanartFebruary artist is fugitiverabbit, who has been creating stunning watercolor paintings for years and recently made some gorgeous Inside pieces.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Her real name is Ruby Ball, and her extensive interview with yours truly is now up on my website here. Check it out!
Ruby is one of the few fanart creators I've spoken to who is actually able to make a living as an artist since she is a freelance illustrator, and you can view her incredible pieces on her Etsy shop.
Ruby also has a second Tumblr blog called lawlesslagomorph.
Enjoy, and stay tuned for more fanart fun! ✌🏼

That's awesome that you were filmed at one of Jerrod's shows...they had cameras at a City Winery gig I had attended last September, so who knows? Haha
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ADORE their friendship too! 💗
Here are some of my favorite Bobby and Rod things:
Both of them playing D&D with Elsie Fisher and Gillian Jacobs
The Grammys reaction video (Bo's not here, y'all!)
The A24 podcast
This Uproxx interview about their first collaboration, 8, where they keep gushing over each other's works
“We were trying to make something as unique as watching Jerrod on stage,” says Burnham. “Watching Jerrod, for me, is such a unique experience. It doesn’t feel like anything else. So we really wanted to try to make the special not feel like anything else. Because trying to put the round peg of him into a square hole would just be boring. It just doesn’t work for his comedy.”
“We’ve been friends for a few years,” says Carmichael. “He’s one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met. I genuinely think he’s a genius. And truthfully, he’s just an amazing friend to have.” Throughout this admission he can’t stop giggling. Burnham laughs just as much when asked why. “Yeah, we’re laughing at the idea of each other having to describe our friendship. I think that’s what we’re laughing at.”
And here's my own post with 10 facts about their ongoing friendship
Enjoy! ✌🏼

17 questions to 17 people ✌
tagged by @softandwildx, @handsinmotion & @mickeysjones
1. Nickname: Kinda hard to give me a nickname because my name is literally one syllable, but one of my friends calls me Ellie.
2. Zodiac: I'm a Leo 🤭
3. Height: 5'5"
4. Last thing I googled: Gregorian Chants. Don't ask me why, I don't know either.
5. Song stuck in my head:
6. Number of people you follow: Not a lot actually, only 40.
7. Amount of sleep you get: All you need to know is that about a month ago I started hallucinating from sleep deprivation. So..
8. Lucky number(s): 21, it's been my lucky number since I was five.
9. Dream job: I'm majoring in forensic psychology, and that is currently my dream job. And I also want to be a writer, but not a full-time writer.
10. What are you currently wearing: A baggy red sweater, Jeans, and Doc Martens.
11. Movies and/or books that summarize me: Genuinely I have no idea. But 'A Little Princess' was the first movie I ever cried to, and it's a core memory of mine.
12. What's your favorite instrument: Piano and Guitar. Can't play either though 🥲
13. Favorite song right now:
It's an addiction. And my top played song on Spotify this year.
14. Describe your aesthetic: Not an aesthetic but like seven people have said that I gave them Aubrey Plaza vibes, which I don't see but whatever. I would describe my clothing style as WhateverICanFindInMyClosetCore, and comfortable I guess?? Lmao
15. Favorite author: Okay fuck it. 'Before The Act' by @ghostwriterdiariesxoxo is hands down the BEST book I've ever read, and I declare that she is my favorite author dgyskuj,h. Sure, it's a fanfic. But I don't care, it's perfection.
*Ahem, Ahem* Moving on.
16. Favorite animal noise: When dogs sigh or do that lil huffing sound.
17. Random fact about yourself: I can do a really good Patrick Bateman impression, and my least favorite word is 'throb/throbbing', but only when it's said aloud.
Hoorayyyy

OMG! My absolute FAVORITE YouTube video essayist, Josh Kingsford of Comedy Without Errors, just dropped a NEW analysis on swearing in comedy! 👀
youtube
I've been majorly influenced by Josh's style of academic video essays in my writing as the Bo Burnham Historian and now as the Stand-Up Comedy Historian. He creates these absolutely fascinating and gorgeous visual texts that explain comedy in ways I had never seen, and I just adore his James Acaster and Bo Burnham videos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, his INCREDIBLE and ENGAGING analysis of Inside was my top video essay of 2022, trumping anything else I had watched (and I had viewed ANYTHING related to Bo lol).
Please do yourself a favor and check out Josh's videos. You definitely won't regret it! ✌🏼🐔

Hi, everyone!
I will be not be using this blog after May 2023.
Please follow my new Tumblr blog @stand-upcomedyhistorian for updates on a variety of comics (I've exhausted the topic of Bo at this point, and I'm ready to move on after hyperfixating for the past year or so).
If you have any ideas for deep-dive posts, please reach out! I would love to pursue any suggestions.
Thanks for following me for so long—I really appreciate all of you! 🥰

Good morning!
I have a fun Bo Burnham statistic for this week: Inside (The Songs) has now been on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart for 124 weeks...
Tumblr media
And what else is at 124 currently? Why, Bo's biggest and most popular music video ever—Welcome to the Internet. It's at 124 million views and will soon reach 125M!
Tumblr media
Sadly, Bo is going to be knocked off the charts soon because of the Monster Mash (this happens every Halloween ugh), but he'll be back at Number 1 again soon. 🙌🏼
To read more about the history of Bo's impressive Billboard run, check out my Inside (The Songs) article.
Keep it here for more statistics and comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

INCREDIBLE news today:
Inside (The Songs) has broken the record for longest time at the top of the Billboard Comedy Albums Chart! 🤯
I have been following Bo's progression on the charts since he first reached number one, and he has now been there for 122 WEEKS!
Tumblr media
And what caused him to be number 2 a handful of times? Why, The Monster Mash of course (which I always relate to "I Love Lisa" haha)!
youtube
Yup, Bobby Pickett's song always soars near Halloween, for obvious reasons—but other than that yearly occurrence, Bo has been number 1 since the album was released on June 10, 2021.
For more info about Inside (The Songs), check out my post about its journey to the top of the charts.
Congratulations, Bo! You did it! 🙌🏼

Hi, everyone!
It's Demetri Martin Month on my website for December, and I've been working on a number of articles about one of my favorite comics.
Tumblr media
If you haven't heard of Demetri before, his comedy is DENSE with fun music, clever turns of phrase (he's a master of wordplay), and witty one-liners. Plus he draws—and he's ambidextrous!
Anyway, while doing some research, I discovered something pretty interesting:
Almost all of my top 5 favorite comedians have some affiliation with Gillian Jacobs (Britta Perry on Community)! 🤯
Tumblr media
Here's how:
1. Bo Burnham: Bo and Gillian both appear in Adventures in the Sin Bin, and Bo knows her long-time partner Chris Storer REALLY well (Chris co-directed two of his comedy specials—what. and Make Happy)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun fact: Gillian also participated in a DND game with Bo and Jerrod Carmichael as part of Elsie Fisher's podcast—and it's one of the funniest things I've ever heard haha
2. James Acaster: No connection that I know of
3. John Mulaney: Both John and Gillian appear in the wonderful episode from Season 2 of The Bear called "Fishes"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Flight of the Conchords: No connection to Bret that I know of, but Jemaine Clement and Gillian both starred in I Used To Go Here (a really enjoyable movie and definitely recommended)
Tumblr media
5. Demetri Martin: Gillian plays Demetri's love interest in his directorial debut Dean (that he also wrote—so talented!)
Tumblr media
Pretty crazy how many connections all of my favorites have to Britta! 😉

Awesome news for Maria Bamford fans! 👀
Comedy Central just uploaded an ENTIRE episode of her CC Presents 🤯
youtube
This isn't the one that made me fall in love with her comedy, unfortunately (that was her 2001 episode), but any Maria is a worthwhile investment of your time!
I was lucky enough to meet her in person last year, and she was an absolute sweetheart.
Tumblr media
If you'd like to learn more about one of my favorite comedians, I have a post about her influence on Bo Burnham and 10 fun facts on my website.
Enjoy the episode, and keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Hi, everyone!
Mike Birbiglia's new podcast episode is out, and he's got Pete Holmes on again—excellent!
youtube
This is a wonderful discussion of comedy by two greats, and Pete brings up Jerrod Carmichael's Rothaniel twice 🙌🏼
Here's a beautiful explanation of the HBO comedy special at 44 minutes in.
Tumblr media
Pete: Do you think Jerrod Carmichael felt fantastic after he did Rothaniel? And what a fucking gift it is.
Mike: Yeah, it is a gift.
Pete: And you, when you do all your shows, I'm not just saying...
Mike: I think that special is a gift.
Pete: It is. It's a work of art!
Mike: That's an example of someone who—and if people haven't seen Rothaniel, uh, I don't want to...spoiler alert, if you read about it, he comes out of the closet in the special.
Pete: 20 minutes in.
Tumblr media
Mike: Yeah. And...it is a gift because he doesn't have to do that.
Pete: Nope!
Mike: It only has ramifications on his life that are complicated with his mom, people who he's close to, and that's challenging. Those are real challenges. And he gives it to the audience.
Pete: That's the risk, and that's what you're trying to model...I'm trying to model to them. I say in my act, "I'm scared...of my dad." And then I also say some truth and hopefully, not consciously, but somewhere in there they're going, "we can be scared and do it anyway." And that's kinda the whole thing.
Tumblr media
What a lovely description of Jerrod's special and the power of onstage vulnerability!
And if you want more info on Rothaniel, you have come to the right place! I was lucky enough to attend a taping (one of 4 that Bo Burnham masterfully edited together), and I have audience interviews here.
Enjoy the podcast episode, and keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

I've finished reading ALL of Maria Bamford's new book, Sure, I'll Join Your Cult! 🙌🏼
Tumblr media
What a fun and fascinating read (and I adored the "recipes" at the end of each chapter). As I had mentioned previously, I do plan to post a review on my website but—for now—please check out my two articles on Maria and her influence on the comedy community:

So, I had to use Instagram recently, and I immediately had to delete it again because all of my negative thoughts came RUSHING back.
That app is literally the death of me ugh.
Anyway, before I removed Instagram, I saw that the Largo had an amazing lineup recently: Anthony Jeselnik, Joe Mande, and Kumail Nanjiani. All so funny and...I can connect each one of them DIRECTLY to Bo Burnham! 👀
Tumblr media
Here's how:
Anthony: Easy. Bo and Anthony are good friends and I wrote about their relationship here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joe: A little harder. Bo appears to give advice (along with George Wallace) to Joe on how to win a comedy award in his 2017 special
youtube
Tumblr media
Kumail: Easy again. Bo is in Kumail's Academy Award-nominated film The Big Sick and Bo would often perform at The Meltdown, a performance space Kumail ran with his wife and Jonah Ray
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So there you go! Now if Bo would just show up unannounced at the Largo again...a girl can dream! 🤞🏼
Tumblr media
Keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

If so, I'd LOVE to interview you via email for my new series about audience members (similar to this one about Rothaniel that I did last summer)!
Please feel free to email me at [email protected] or DM me here on Tumblr if you'd like to participate.
