Happy INSIDE Day to those who celebrate! 🥳

Yes, it's been THREE years since Bo Burnham graced the world with his masterpiece, and it is the two-year anniversary of my website (when I was the Bo Burnham Historian).

So much has happened since I first saw Bo with his disco ball at 4am 3 years ago. I met my best friends through our love of the special, saw Rothaniel being taped (and got to stare into Bo's eyes in person lol), saw KATE three times (Bo was at all of the performances), and accomplished my bucket list item of seeing my top 5 comedians!

I've also gone through a lot of personal changes: I started therapy, cut off my parents after coming out as bi, had a nervous breakdown, separated from my husband of 14 years on July 26, and met the love of my life in January 2024. Jeff and I moved in together at the end of March, and I started a new job working on AI after being in Marketing for six years.

With all of those changes, one thing has remained the same—Bo is still my number-one comedian and Inside is my favorite movie of all time (yes, it's a film, dammit!).

How are you planning to celebrate the occasion? I'm going to watch the special and the Outtakes tonight...and see if I can spot any more Easter eggs lol

Today's #FanartFebruary artist is fugitiverabbit, who has been creating stunning watercolor paintings for years and recently made some gorgeous Inside pieces.

Her real name is Ruby Ball, and her extensive interview with yours truly is now up on my website here. Check it out!

Ruby is one of the few fanart creators I've spoken to who is actually able to make a living as an artist since she is a freelance illustrator, and you can view her incredible pieces on her Etsy shop.

“We were trying to make something as unique as watching Jerrod on stage,” says Burnham. “Watching Jerrod, for me, is such a unique experience. It doesn’t feel like anything else. So we really wanted to try to make the special not feel like anything else. Because trying to put the round peg of him into a square hole would just be boring. It just doesn’t work for his comedy.”

“We’ve been friends for a few years,” says Carmichael. “He’s one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met. I genuinely think he’s a genius. And truthfully, he’s just an amazing friend to have.” Throughout this admission he can’t stop giggling. Burnham laughs just as much when asked why. “Yeah, we’re laughing at the idea of each other having to describe our friendship. I think that’s what we’re laughing at.”

(I ADORE the fact that he's drawing a dick with a top hat in the second one...a reference to Sexting perhaps? haha)

Tonight is the Golden Globes ceremony, hosted by Jerrod Carmichael 🙌🏼

It's his first time hosting an awards ceremony, but he did host a very memorable episode of SNL (and wore a gorgeous white suit for the occasion).

OMG! My absolute FAVORITE YouTube video essayist, Josh Kingsford of Comedy Without Errors, just dropped a NEW analysis on swearing in comedy! 👀

I've been majorly influenced by Josh's style of academic video essays in my writing as the Bo Burnham Historian and now as the Stand-Up Comedy Historian. He creates these absolutely fascinating and gorgeous visual texts that explain comedy in ways I had never seen, and I just adore his James Acaster and Bo Burnham videos.

In fact, his INCREDIBLE and ENGAGING analysis of Inside was my top video essay of 2022, trumping anything else I had watched (and I had viewed ANYTHING related to Bo lol).

For those new to my stuff—Hi! My name is Jessica, and I'm a copy editor in Pennsylvania who has been obsessed with Bo Burnham since 2019.

I have a website that I created last year that is where I store all of my deep dives into the minutiae of Bo's works, particularly Inside. I also have interviews with content creators and lots of other fun stuff. You can check it out here!

I've got some big themes coming up—

February brings fanart, fanart, fanart! I have interviewed a number of Bo artists who use a variety of materials to create their works: yarn, pen and paper, paint, and digital. The one common thread is a need to include Bo in their pieces—and I totally get that inclination! Haha

Another theme I'm working on is YouTube Creators. I've interviewed a few in the past, but this time I would like to focus an entire month on even more people who are making some of the best Bo-related videos online. If you want to participate, please DM me!

Finally, I have plans for a Bo fanfiction theme! I'm so impressed by the quality of writing out there, and I want to celebrate the fanfic writers who are creating wonderful, multilayered characters and stories.

I hope you all are having a nice weekend (and a 3-day one if you have tomorrow off for MLK Day!).

I’ve been hard at work compiling pieces for Fanart February as well as conducting interviews with a variety of creators.

If you're an artist and you’d like to participate, please DM me ASAP! I’m hoping to interview people who make a variety of Bo-related art (paintings, drawings, crochet, embroidery, etc.).

I also wanted to give you all a heads up about a recent post on my website.

Two new items in the Bo world—

Inside (The Songs) has officially spent a whopping 80 weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Comedy charts! 🥳

Comedian Patton Oswalt was on Justin Long's podcast yesterday, and he was talking about how brilliant Bo is and that his teen daughter is an enormous fan. So cool!

Here's the Reddit thread.

I'll be covering Patton and his influence at some point since he's on Bo's list of favorite comics in 2010.

Bo specifically said this about Patton's genius wordplay:

an absolute wordsmith. such beautifully hilarious word choice. you know when people say "he paints a picture with words" – i hate when people say that. but goddamn it patton oswalt paints pictures with words. DAMN! what other person can come up with a phrase like "twat mist" when describing the air quality of a room that just housed an orgy? so brilliant and so funny.

And the two were even on We Bare Bears together (as Nom Nom and Andy Bangs, respectively)!

Quick question for my followers—do you all care if I go in the exact order of Bo's list for my 13-part series (which I've already mixed up because I saw Maria Bamford in July), or is it acceptable for me to talk about the comics who've influenced Bo in no discernable order?

I feel like I've pigeonholed my writing by setting up parameters no one actually cares about except for me, and it's leading to writer's block.

Please let me know your thoughts—follow the order I've already established or work on topics that interest me, regardless of the prescribed list? Thanks! ✌🏼

Good morning!

I have a fun Bo Burnham statistic for this week: Inside (The Songs) has now been on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart for 124 weeks...

And what else is at 124 currently? Why, Bo's biggest and most popular music video ever—Welcome to the Internet. It's at 124 million views and will soon reach 125M!

Sadly, Bo is going to be knocked off the charts soon because of the Monster Mash (this happens every Halloween ugh), but he'll be back at Number 1 again soon. 🙌🏼

INCREDIBLE news today:

Inside (The Songs) has broken the record for longest time at the top of the Billboard Comedy Albums Chart! 🤯

I have been following Bo's progression on the charts since he first reached number one, and he has now been there for 122 WEEKS!

And what caused him to be number 2 a handful of times? Why, The Monster Mash of course (which I always relate to "I Love Lisa" haha)!

Yup, Bobby Pickett's song always soars near Halloween, for obvious reasons—but other than that yearly occurrence, Bo has been number 1 since the album was released on June 10, 2021.
