Eddie Catflap, the world's worst minder. At your service! He's in the mood for dancing most nights down at the BBC bar, making sure his boy Richie doesn't get mowed down by the paps when he's trying to enjoy one or two quiet little drinkies. Lager frenzy happened, he stinks of beer, cigarettes and maybe a little bit of sick.
It's getting late, everyone's gone home, Eddie. Maybe you should find your way back to the bins Richie's flat...
Another Ade Edmondson character in the Rik and Ade universe of characters to add to the cosplay wardrobe! Eddie's front shirt was made by me with guidance from the Inez Nordell, the costume designer who worked on Filthy, Rich and Catflap!

Thinking as a Skill: "Yes, and..."
The investigations I have undertaken into 1980s British comedy that led me to the subject of my previous post have taken an intriguing turn into the study of the essence of comedy itself. What is it, exactly, that makes something funny? Furthermore, how is it that some people are better than others at the skill of constructing humor, especially in the moment?

A tribute to Tony Allen, oft-called The Godfather of UK Alternative Comedy
Here, award-wining stand-up Becky Fury pays tribute to her long-time friend Tony Allen, who died yesterday morning, in London… (Photos from Becky’s collection) Becky Fury with Tony Allen Tony Allen was born like most people but, unlike most people, he was born on March 4th 1945, in the last months of WW2 in Hayes, Middlesex, to working-class parents.  Tony attributed much of the anarchic…

I've finished reading ALL of Maria Bamford's new book, Sure, I'll Join Your Cult! 🙌🏼
Tumblr media
What a fun and fascinating read (and I adored the "recipes" at the end of each chapter). As I had mentioned previously, I do plan to post a review on my website but—for now—please check out my two articles on Maria and her influence on the comedy community:
10 Fun Facts
Bo's Comedy Heroes: Maria Bamford
Happy reading, and keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Nice little article on the alternative comedy era, with a particular focus on Saturday Live. There's a ruddy heck of a lot of comedians mentioned in this!

Francesca D’Uva: A Journey Through Emotion and Performance
Francesca D’Uva: A Multifaceted Performer Francesca D’Uva glided through the rehearsal room, her presence transforming the space into her own vibrant playground. With each note, her voice seamlessly transitioned from a deep, guttural emo-metal drone to a soaring, operatic belt, and then to a delicate serenade that tugged at the heartstrings. She embodied a surreal array of characters: a sultry…

Welcome to Tablegod and Its Subjects. Tablegod uses It pronouns with a capital I because It is a natural force not personified. “We”—meaning the Subjects and I, a medium of Tablegod, or a simple storyteller of sorts—tell the tales of aliens among us, curious incidents of the mundane. I am a real person, a failed, desperate artist, who reached out to other aliens like me. Aliens in a metaphorical sense.

Iconic British comic Bernie Clifton says: “I’m just mucking about.”
Bernie Clifton rides Oswald the Ostrich Yesterday’s blog was the first part of a chat with legendary English entertainer Bernie Clifton. It concludes here… JOHN: You were saying that you were inspired by Les Dawson to do a visual act. BERBIE: Yes. JOHN: So then there’s Peter Pullen… BERNIE: Yes. Peter’s an absolute genius. At the time I was getting on with my props act, he was making all the…

"The Comic Strip Presents" is mostly (if not entirely) posted on YouTube currently if anyone is a fan of the British 80s alternative comedy boom. I've really been enjoying watching them with my husband, especially because Jason "was there when the deep magic was written" and his perspective on it adds so much context (i.e.- he translates the slang and references that are lost on me both due to time and place).
