Willie Nelson’s Birthday Party Coming to Theaters

- “Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90” to screen June 11-14 in select movie houses

Willie Nelson turned 90 but once.

But he celebrated the milestone with two all-star concerts April 29 (the big day) and 30 (90+1) at the Hollywood Bowl. And those two, six-hour blowouts have been distilled into a “two-hour-plus” film headed to theaters in June.

“Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90,” features “a selection of the most memorable performances and once-in-a-lifetime collaborations” and will be shown in select movie theaters June 11-14.

The movie’s website promises performances by “Willie Nelson, Allison Russell, Billy Strings, Bobby Weir, Booker T. Jones, Buddy Cannon and many more …” A photo montage on the site includes images of Dave Matthews, Snoop Dogg, Jack Johnson, Nathaniel Rateliff and Margo Price among others.

Side note: how exactly was the Hermes crew supposed to “prepare a thanksgiving meal together” when their cooking instruments are just a microwave and that machine that rehydrates food packs? Mark complains about microwaved potatoes enough to know there’s no stove. Andy Weir look me in the eye and answer the question.

Buck scrolls through the inventory list a bit more, taking a mental note of the most useful categories like clothing, paper, laboratory equipment, samples, Medical equipment, training materials, Thanksgiving meal...

Wait. Thanksgiving? It’s only then that Buck remembers. Thanksgiving was supposed to happen during their 31 sol mission. Dr. Copeland, the team’s lead psychiatrist back on earth, had suggested allowing the crew to cook together as a team for their Thanksgiving meal as a bonding exercise, and a way to boost morale, especially with Bobby leading the crew. With Bobby cooking, it would be a pretty great meal compared to their usual rations, even with the limited cooking supplies crew had (which was really nothing except for a few Bunsen burners that could perhaps be cobbled together).

The important thing was that for the Thanksgiving meal, there were fresh, uncooked raw ingredients. Not frozen, just vacuum-sealed, soft landed, and not exposed to the harsh conditions of Mars. And that included a dozen potatoes- something that Buck feasibly could plant in the Martian soil and perhaps be able to grow a new food supply with.

Song Review: Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros feat. Tyler Childers - “Mama Tried” (Live, April 3, 2022)

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros are authentically outlaw, wrapping Tyler Childers in country immunity as he leads the band through “Mama Tried.”

Recorded professionally April 3, 2022, at Radio City Music Hall and freshly released, this owes more to Merle Haggard’s original studio recording than to the Grateful Dead’s live arrangement. Which is not only the aim with Wolf Bros’ instrumentation of pedal-steel and electric guitar, acoustic piano, double bass and drums, but well-suited for Childers, who dwells in that space.

Weir’s guitar solo could’ve - and should’ve - yielded to Barry Sless’ steel. But expecting Weir to cede that territory after ceding the mic to Childers is folly and this “Mama Tried” is a refreshing Dead-world take on a Grateful warhorse.

Everybody say, “Thank you, Tyler.”
