let's goooo незламний народе first in everything amirite -----------------------------------
no one cares
I don't care what you say. This is the harsh truth. No one gives a fuck if our nation lives or dies.
To use intercontinental missile to strike Dnipro. That's gotta be the most ridiculously expensive temper tantrum ever.

Step-by-step: Let's report a radqueer for inciting violence
This is a tutorial on reporting. Don't find this user, don't contact them, don't harass them, etc - I am showing how you should report these posts instead. Content warnings: Radqueers, murder, torture
Here is our post in question:
"transtorturemurderer: a transharmful term for one who wishes to or identifies as having commited torture murder"
Archive the post.
Report the post to Tumblr.
Block the blog and everyone in the notes of the post.
Tutorial on each step is under the cut:
Archive The Post
When a radqueer advocates for violence, child abuse, animal abuse, abuse of a corpse or actual CSAM material, it's very important that you archive the post. Saving evidence of radqueers promoting harm is important, especially if this user later comes back after their account is removed.
(It is important to note that I am specifically saying "advocates for" as in in real life. If a radqueer coining post doesn't specify, it can be reported to Tumblr as IRL. I'm noting "IRL" here because so many people think that fictional child sexual abuse material (and similar things) are perfectly fine, although I would like to note that I do not support/endorse "fictional CSAM" and it is recognized as being equally harmful to IRL CSAM/CP by places like MissingKids.com (organizations dedicated to stopping child abuse). But I'm not dedicating this space to arguing about that - Do not derail this post by arguing with me about this. This is a tutorial for something specific.)
You have two main options for archiving:
Archive.Org
Archive.Today
I tend to use both archivers, but if you only want to use one I suggest Archive.Today. Open the main page and copy-paste the URL of the RQ post into the field. Press enter, and it will store an archived version of the post. (Sometimes this takes longer than other times, this is based on how many people are using the site at once.)
If you plan to do a lot of reporting, install the Firefox extensions for Archive.Today and Archive.Org, they let you archive your current page with one click.
If a page has been archived before, you get this message. If it looks like a post has been edited or there are new replies in the notes from radqueers encouraging it, I suggest archiving it again.
Now you've got your updated archived URL. Hold onto this URL.
Report Them To Tumblr
You'll need to view the post in dashboard view if they have a custom theme. Custom theme URLS go like blogname.tumblr.com, and dashboard view is tumblr.com/blogname/post122121212121212121.
Once in dashboard view, click the hamburger menu (the three dots), and you'll see the red option that says "Report blogname."
This takes you to a basic categories menu. Select "Report something else."
That takes you to a sub menu which lets you pick from the following options:
Copyright violation
Trademark violation
Harm to minors
Privacy violation
Impersonation or Non-Genuine Behavior
Suicide or self-harm concern
Hate speech violation
Suspected terrorism
Sexually explicit material
Gore, mutilation, or bestiality
Violent content or threat
I’m being harassed
Unlawful uses or content
Spam
Election Integrity
I bolded the options which radqueer posts will most likely fall into. For the post I'm reporting, I am selecting "Violent content or threat."
You'll enter Tumblr's permalink (the post url), enter a name, your email, solve a captcha and most importantly describe how it violates Tumblr's Community Guidelines. Since I'm reporting this for violence, let's go right to the Community Guidelines on Tumblr:
What Tumblr is not for: Violent Content and Threats, Gore and Mutilation. Don't post content which includes violent threats toward individuals or groups - this includes threats of theft, property damage, or financial harm. Don't post violent content or gore just to be shocking. Don't showcase the mutilation or torture of human beings, animals (including bestiality), or their remains. Don't post content that encourages or incites violence, or glorifies acts of violence or the perpetrators.
You can use the way a website's phrased their guidelines as a sort of base for writing your report. However, on Tumblr remember that it needs to be fairly short because there's a character limit. So, questions to answer:
Does this include violent threats towards a person or group? Is this a label/"pride flag" about committing violence against a person or group?
Does this encourage violence - is it telling people to commit acts of violence?
Is it glorifying acts of violence or their perpetrators?
In this example, this is a pride flag, which denotes pride, and it says "one who wishes to or identifies as having commited torture murder" That is reasonable enough cause to call this post glorifying violence. So, here's what I'm saying in my report: (Changed phrasing slightly from the screenshot above)
This user is posting "pride flags" for people who "identify as" and "wish to" into murderers and other violent perpetrators. In this post, they made a "transorturemurderer" pride flag, for people who wish to commit torture murder. This is very concerning, this blog seems to be completely serious. Please take this blog and other radqueer blogs down.
If a user has many posts right on their blog that violate the Community Guidelines, you can say something akin to "More examples: (Link)" and link to the archived post/s.
Once you're satisfied with your report, you can click submit and Tumblr will say "Got it" and let you know it was received.
Block the blog and everyone in the notes
If you still have the post open, quickly go through the notes and block everyone interacting positively. (Don't spend time looking at these blogs, it will likely be upsetting/disturbing)
Closing Notes
I could've phrased the part about removing other radqueer blogs better. My reason for adding that is that I want Tumblr to start becoming aware of what radqueers post. I believe firmly that once enough people report radqueers for their content, Tumblr might respond to future petitions or requests to ban all radqueer content.
Don't reply to radqueer posts. Don't reply to radqueer posts. This can be tempting, but I don't think it's a good idea. Even if you've got good intentions or make some great points, radqueers like to screenshot anti radqueer posts and post them as examples of "antis harassing them". Your post could even be shown to someone who is questioning being radqueer, grooming them into the community with a sort of "Look! See? All of those mean antis will never accept you, all they do is harass people for disagreements!" air.
I'm autistic and can't read tone well, and I also have OCD that makes me overexplain my intentions. If parts of this post were hard to read, please help me make them shorter.

IMPORTANT ARTICLE (link)
“Israelis” and current/former IOF are writing America’s news and approving stories for air — if you get your news foremost from sources like CNN, New York Times, Washington Post, AP, Axios and others… they commit heinous journalistic malpractice in falsifying information and orientalist, imperialist speculation.
From the article:
“Unit 8200 is Israel’s largest and perhaps most controversial spying organization. It has been responsible for many high-profile espionage and terror operations, including the recent pager attack that injured thousands of Lebanese civilians. As this investigation will reveal, Ravid is far from the only Israeli ex-spy working at top U.S. media outlets, working hard to manufacture Western support for his country’s actions.
[…]
Most of these stories consisted of simply printing anonymous White House or Israeli government sources, making them look good, and distancing President Biden from the horrors of the Israeli attack on Palestine. As such, there was functionally no difference between these and White House press releases. For example, one story the judges picked out was titled “Scoop: Biden tells Bibi 3-day fighting pause could help secure release of some hostages,” and presented the 46th President of the United States as a dedicated humanitarian hellbent on reducing suffering. Another described how “frustrated” Biden was becoming with Netanyahu and the Israeli government.
Protestors had called on reporters to snub the event in solidarity with their fallen counterparts in Gaza (which, at the time of writing, comes to at least 128 journalists). Not only was there no boycott of the event, but organizers gave their highest award to an Israeli intelligence official-turned-reporter who has earned a reputation as perhaps the most dutiful stenographer of power in Washington.
Ravid was personally presented with the award by President Biden, who embraced him like a brother. That a known (former) Israeli spy could hug Biden in such a manner speaks volumes about not only the intimate relationship between the United States and Israel but about the extent to which establishment media holds power to account.
This relentless whitewashing of the Biden administration has drawn widespread mockery online.
“AXIOS EXCLUSIVE: After selling Netanyahu millions of dollars worth of weapons, Biden played —loudly — Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood.’ ‘Everyone could hear it,’ a source close to Biden says,” tweeted X user David Grossman. “Continuing to hand over big piles of cash and weapons, but shaking my head so everyone knows i sort of disagree with it,” quipped comedian Hussein Kesvani, in response to Ravid’s latest article suggesting that Biden has become “increasingly distrustful” of the Israeli government.
Throughout this supposed split between the U.S. and Israel, the Biden administration has continued to voice enthusiastic support for Israeli offensives, block ceasefire resolutions and Palestinian statehood at the U.N., and has sent $18 billion worth of weapons to Israel in the past 12 months. Thus, no matter how questionable these Axios reports are, they serve a vital role for Washington, allowing the Biden administration to distance itself from what international bodies have labeled a genocide. Ravid’s function has been to manufacture consent for the government among elite liberal audiences who read Axios, allowing them to continue to believe that the U.S. is an honest broker for peace in West Asia rather than a key enabler of Israel.
Ravid does not hide his open disdain for Palestinians. In September, he retweeted a post that stated:
“That’s the PaliNazi way…they pocket concessions without giving anything in return and then use those concessions as the baseline for the next round of negotiations. PaliNazis don’t know how to tell the truth.”
Less than one week later, he promoted Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s highly dubious claim that Israeli Defense Forces had found a picture of the children al-Qassam Brigades leader Mohammed Sinwar celebrating in front of a huge picture of planes hitting the World Trade Center. Gallant stated that they had found this picture – clearly trying to falsely associate Palestinians with 9/11 – in a tunnel “where the Sinwar brothers were hiding like rats.”
AN INFAMOUS SPY AGENCY
Founded in 1952, Unit 8200 is the Israeli military’s largest and most controversial division.
Responsible for covert operations, spying, surveillance and cyberwarfare, since October 7, 2023, the group has been at the forefront of the world’s attention. It is widely identified as the organization behind the infamous pager attack on Lebanon, which left at least nine dead and around 3,000 people injured. While many in Israel (and Ravid himself) hailed the operation as a success, it was condemned worldwide as an egregious act of terrorism, including by ex-CIA director Leon Panetta.
Unit 8200 has also constructed an artificial intelligence-powered kill list for Gaza, suggesting tens of thousands of individuals (including women and children) for assassination. This software was the primary targeting mechanism the IDF used in the early months of its attack on the densely populated strip.
Described as Israel’s Harvard, Unit 8200 is one of the most prestigious institutions in the country. The selection process is highly competitive; parents spend fortunes on science and math classes for their children, hoping they will be picked for service there, unlocking a lucrative career in Israel’s burgeoning hi-tech sector.
It also serves as the centerpiece of Israel’s futuristic repressive state apparatus. Using gigantic amounts of data compiled on Palestinians by tracking their every move through face recognition cameras monitoring their calls, messages, emails and personal data, Unit 8200 has created a dystopian dragnet that it uses to surveil, harass and suppress Palestinians.
Unit 8200 compiles dossiers on every Palestinian, including their medical history, sex lives and search histories, so that this information can be used for extortion or blackmail later. If, for example, an individual is cheating on their spouse, desperately needs a medical operation, or is secretly homosexual, this can be used as leverage to turn civilians into informants and spies for Israel. One former Unit 8200 operative said that as part of his training, he was assigned to memorize different Arabic words for “gay” so that he could listen out for them in conversations.
Unit 8200 operatives have gone on to create some of the world’s most downloaded apps and many of the most infamous spying programs, including Pegasus. Pegasus was used to surveil dozens of political leaders around the world, including France’s Emmanuel Macron, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, and Pakistan’s Imran Khan.
The Israeli government authorized the sale of Pegasus to the Central Intelligence Agency, as well as some of the most authoritarian governments on the planet. This included Saudi Arabia, who used the software to surveil Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi before he was assassinated by Saudi agents in Türkiye.
A recent MintPress News investigation found that a large proportion of the worldwide VPN market is owned and operated by an Israeli company headed and co-founded by a Unit 8200 alumnus.
Leaving aside Ravid’s comments, the question arises: is it really acceptable that members from a group designed to infiltrate, surveil and target foreign populations, that has produced many of the planet’s most dangerous and invasive spying technology, and is widely to be behind sophisticated international terror attacks, are writing Americans’ news about Israel and Palestine? What would the reaction be if senior figures in U.S. media were outed as intelligence officers for Hezbollah, Hamas, or Russia’s F.S.B.?
NEWS ABOUT ISRAEL, BROUGHT TO YOU BY ISRAEL
Ravid is far from the only influential journalist in America with deep ties to the Israeli state, however. Shachar Peled spent three years as an officer in Unit 8200, leading a team of analysts in surveillance, intelligence and cyberwarfare. She also served as a technology analyst for the Israeli intelligence service, Shin Bet. In 2017, she was hired as a producer and writer by CNN and spent three years putting together segments for Fareed Zakaria and Christiane Amanpour’s shows. Google later hired her to become their Senior Media Specialist.
Another Unit 8200 agent who went on to work for CNN is Tal Heinrich. Heinrich spent three years as a Unit 8200 agent. Between 2014 and 2017, she was the field and news desk producer for CNN’s notoriously pro-Israel Jerusalem Bureau, where she was one of the principal journalists shaping America’s understanding of Operation Protective Edge, Israel’s bombardment of Gaza that killed more than 2,000 people and left hundreds of thousands displaced. Heinrich later left CNN and is now the official spokesperson of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
CNN’s penchant for hiring Israeli state figures continues to this day. Tamar Michaelis, for example, currently works for the network, producing much of its Israel/Palestine content. This is despite having previously served as an official IDF spokesperson in the Israeli Defense Forces.
The New York Times, meanwhile, hired Anat Schwartz, an ex-Israeli Air Force Intelligence officer with zero journalistic experience. Schwartz co-wrote the infamous and now discredited “Screams Without Words” expose, which claimed that Hamas fighters systematically sexually violated Israelis on October 7. Times staff themselves revolted over the lack of evidence and fact-checking in the piece.
Multiple New York Times employees, including star columnist David Brooks, have had children serving in the IDF; even as they report or offer opinions on the region, the Times never disclosed these glaring conflicts of interest to its readers. Nor has it disclosed that it purchased a Jerusalem house for its bureau chief that was stolen from the family of Palestinian intellectual Ghada Karmi in 1948.
Social media companies, too, are filled with former Unit 8200 agents. A 2022 MintPress study found no fewer than 99 former Unit 8200 operatives working for Google.
Facebook also employs dozens of ex-spies from the controversial unit. This includes Emi Palmor, who sits on Meta’s oversight board. This 21-person panel ultimately decides the direction of Facebook, Instagram and Meta’s other offerings, adjudicating on what content to allow, promote, and what to suppress. Meta has been formally condemned for its systematic suppression of Palestinian voices across its platforms by Human Rights Watch, which documented over 1,000 instances of overt anti-Palestinian censorship in October and November 2023 alone. A measure of this bias is highlighted by the fact that, at one point, Instagram automatically inserted the word “terrorist” into the profiles of users who called themselves Palestinian.
Despite the widespread claims by U.S. politicians that it is a hotbed of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic racism, TikTok also employs many former Unit 8200 agents in key positions in its organization. For example, in 2021, it hired Asaf Hochman as its global head of product strategy and operations. Before joining TikTok, Hochman spent over five years as an Israeli spy. He now works for Meta.
CNN staff are under similar pressure. Last October, new C.E.O. Mark Thompson sent out a memo to all staff instructing them to make sure that Hamas (and not Israel) is presented as responsible for the violence, that they must always use the moniker “Hamas-controlled” when discussing the Gaza Health Ministry and their civilian death figures, and barring them from any reporting of Hamas’ viewpoint, which its senior director of news standards and practices told staff was “not newsworthy” and amounted to “inflammatory rhetoric and propaganda.”
Both the Times and CNN have fired multiple journalists over their opposition to Israeli actions or support for Palestinian liberation. In November, the Times’ Jazmine Hughes was forced out after she signed an open letter opposing genocide in Palestine. The newspaper terminated Hosam Salem’s contract the previous year after a pressure campaign from pro-Israel group Honest Reporting. And CNN anchor Marc Lamont Hill was abruptly fired in 2018 for calling for Palestinian liberation in a speech at the United Nations.
Large organizations like Axios, CNN and the New York Times obviously know who they are hiring. These are some of the most sought-after jobs in journalism, and hundreds of applicants are likely applying for each position. The fact that these organizations choose to select Israeli spies above everybody else raises serious questions about their journalistic credibility and their purpose.
Hiring agents from Unit 8200 to produce American news should be as unthinkable as employing Hamas or Hezbollah fighters as reporters. Yet former Israeli spies are entrusted with informing the American public about their country’s ongoing offensives against Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran and Syria. What does this say about the credibility and biases of our media?
Since Israel could not continue to prosecute this war without American aid, the battle for the American mind is as important as actions on the ground.
And as the propaganda war wages, the lines between journalist and fighter blur. The fact that many of the top journalists supplying us with news about Israel/Palestine are literally former Israeli intelligence agents only underlines this.”
[emphasis my own]

If you see anyone support Hamas on here, or misrepresent it as necessary revolutionary violence, or provide justification for its actions in any way:
Don’t argue.
Document the post. Screenshot it, take down the blog’s url.
Report the post for Suspected Terrorism—promoting or inciting terrorism is against tumblr’s & most social media platforms’ ToS, and it’s one they’re more likely to take action on. Don’t block them until after the next step.
Scroll through their page to see if they made any other violations & report those too. Now block them.
If you want to go back to refute what they said, just make a new post with the screenshot—whether you black out their url or not is up to you; the point is a) to not expose you to their followers for your safety & b) take away the “follow” button so they can’t trap people in their echo chamber. If you make it so people have to fully type out the url to follow the pro-Hamas account, a significant percentage of people (especially the ones who are undecided or on the fence) will simply not bother.

Deep Below Ground - Part 1: Prologue.
Written by William F. Fazworth.
Peterson Residence, October 7th 1996:
"Ivan, I need a report on Enzo's whereabouts, now!"
"I'm sorry Mari, it's still a negative, from him, from Trinity, it's just us left."
Maritza ended the talk on the radio, it's horrible, everyone's getting picked off one by one. "What are we gonna do?" Finch asked her, Mari didn't know what to tell her aside from the usual "We move forward."
The duo continue to trek through the old home, it's insides twisted by mechanical contraptions built to barricade, capture, and whatever other madness could be done to those who dared to step foot inside. In the case of Mari and the Rescue Squad however, stepping inside is a necessary sacrifice.
They must find them, save them.
"Found something."
Mari turned over to Finch, she was looking through a built in map on one of the cameras "There's a way to unlock the hatch in the backyard, it's all the way upstairs though." He pointed out. "Upstairs? Enzo went up there and never came back!" Mari exclaimed, prompting Finch to note "And Trinity disappeared while she was downstairs, none of this house is safe from traps."
Finch made the first move with Mari catching up from behind, she was peaking through the corners surrounding the stairs "We're good, let's move." He said, the duo began to move faster, not taking any chances. Maritz ran further ahead from Finch, bat in hand, ready to take on whatever is coming-
SLAM
Maritza falls forward, her face slamming to the floor, she turned back to see a metal gate, sealing her and Finch from each other. "Wha- What happened?!" She screamed "I-I don't know! W-We must've tripped a sensor or-"
"Mari?"
Maritza stood in fear, her eyes widened in terror, all she could do was point behind Finch. The latter turned to see him, Peterson.
"GO!" Finch screamed at Maritza.
"B-BUT I-"
"GO!-"
Maritza ran and ran, only peaking behind once, she saw Finch struggling to escape from Peterson. Mari felt horrible, she didn't want to leave Finch behind but she had no choice, she couldn't have saved her. The girl manages to jump into a nearby room, shutting the door and blocking it with a chair, she sat on the floor to breathe.
She looked around the room to see what it was, the walls were lined with old blueprints, there were posters in different languages, seemingly promoting something. She took a closer look at them one by one, these were remnants, all from attractions.
This was Peterson's workshop.
She looked around the room to see if there was anything useful she could use, tools, papers, anything that could help. Maritza looked through every drawer in the room, all a bunch of legal nonsense and paperwork, however, something did caught her attention.
There on the desk was a picture frame of the Petersons, the picture frame was cut and the picture itself vandalized by various scribbles and written words. Aaron's picture crossed out with the words "CURSED", Mrs. Peterson was scribbled with "I'M SORRY", and Mya... Mya's was riddled with numbers that read "8/9/95".
Near the photo, a sticky note.
"Remember what he did, remember where you hid it, remember why your still here in the first place."
Maritza scratched her head over the note, she looked around to see what else she could find, then she noticed one of the picture frames. The picture frame itself was nothing to special, it was just a painting of a bird, a crow or raven of sorts, but it was tilted and Maritza was getting desperate. "God please let this be a spy thing where if I turn it, it'll-"
The photo itself fell to the floor but that didn't matter.
She found a safe, with a keypad.
Maritza looked back at the picture "Here goes nothing." She bluntly told herself, typing in 8995, and it worked. Inside was a single remote labeled "Hatch Pulley." This was it, the key to unlock the hatch.
Right in time too, she could hear the footsteps outside.
Maritza quickly looked around for an exit and unfortunately there's only one, the window. She quickly opened up the window and climbed out, trying her damn hardest to stay as close to the wall as possible until she found the nearby balcony. After making a small jump, she opened the door slowly and saw Peterson rushing into the room she was just in, taking the opportunity, she ran out and downstairs, heading outside.
Now in the backyard with the remote in hand, she presses the button, the hatch slowly being lifted up, she wasted no haste and jumped down below.
Inside was a tunnel, two ways, the first one blocked off by a bunch of furniture, the other one was a boarded pathway, she broke off said boards with her bat and walked through a small corridor, which ended with a metal door with another keypad. Tempting fate, Maritza typed the same code from last time, a beeping sound played and the door opened up.
She wasn't ready to see what was inside.
Laid out in the dirt was a small carpet, small flower pots stood by it and is surrounded by candles, above it a small shelf with the same items alongside small toys, one a doll, Mya's doll. Next to the doll is a cropped out picture of Mya and above the shelf is a cropped out picture of Mya from her missing poster.
Maritza covered her mouth in a sense of disbelief, did Peterson... no... not his own daughter... not Mya.
"No! No! NO!" Maritza screamed, her voice sounding almost anguished "Please no, please no!" She screamed to herself as she fell to her knees. Maritza looked over at the monument and as she kept staring at it for longer periods of time, her eyes began to blur, her mind was screaming.
She doesn't want this to be a grave.
But there was no time for grief.
She heard a loud bang and turned.
BANG
Maritza fell to the floor, her eyes beginning to blur, her body weakening.
The last thing she saw was a shovel shoved to the ground, covered in blood.
Thank you all so much for reading this first part of Deep Below Ground, hope you all enjoy what I have in store so far, can't wait to show more!
Also, any questions and criticism is welcomed, I'd love to answer and improve.
P.S: @ravenbrookz here's the first part of that Finch and Maritza fic I talked about that's set in my AU!

At around 8 pm on Saturday evening in France, Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested as he exited his private jet at Le Bourget Airport, outside Paris. He was flying in from Azerbaijan. According to TF1Info, the French outlet that first broke the news of his arrest, Durov was accompanied by a bodyguard and a woman. As best as anyone can tell, he spent the night in a French jail cell.
Durov’s unexpected detainment came after an arrest warrant was issued by OFMIN, a new law enforcement office that began operations in November and is tasked with preventing violence against minors. Durov’s arrest is reportedly part of a preliminary investigation into a startling array of alleged offenses—drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime, and the promotion of terrorism—deemed to have been permitted on Telegram, which Durov claimed in July has 950 million users.
Investigators speaking to French media were unsure why Durov risked landing in the country given that he was on France’s wanted persons list. According to an unnamed police source who spoke to Reuters, investigators saw Durov’s name on a passenger list ahead of his private jet’s arrival.
Representatives from OFMIN declined to answer questions about the investigation and redirected WIRED to France’s Ministry of Justice, which did not immediately respond. The Paris Prosecutor’s Office said in an email that a full press release is expected to be published on Monday.
Durov is reportedly in the crosshairs of French authorities due to both a lack of moderation on Telegram and a lack of cooperation with police requests. Reuters reported that a cybersecurity gendarmerie unit and France's national antifraud police unit were leading the investigation. The investigative judge is also specialized in organized crime.
Telegram did not respond to requests for comment from WIRED. John Hyman, Telegram’s chief investment officer, declined to comment “currently.” The Telegram News channel posted on Sunday evening that it was “absurd” to claim that an owner or its platform were responsible for abuses of that platform, noting that Durov has “nothing to hide” and travels frequently in Europe. “We’re awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation.”
Although France has yet to officially confirm the arrest, the Russian embassy in Paris was quick to accuse French authorities of not clarifying the reasons for Durov’s detention or facilitating consular access. “As of today, the French authorities are, at the present time, not cooperating on this issue,” the embassy said in a statement. “We are in contact with P. Durov’s lawyer.” Durov became a French citizen in 2021. Based in Dubai, Durov also has United Arab Emirates citizenship.
Questions over lack of moderation on Telegram have plagued the company for years. Islamist extremists and far-right activists have both organized on the platform, and at times used it to incite violence. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war in Gaza, Telegram has found itself at the heart of geopolitics—both as a vital source of information for people on the ground and a dangerous source of disinformation and sometimes graphic content. Durov always claims to be “neutral” and to have no political affiliations.
“Civil society has had a complicated relationship with Telegram over the years,” says Natalia Krapiva, a lawyer at the digital rights group Access Now. “We have defended Telegram against attempts by authoritarian regimes to block and coerce the platform into providing encryption keys, but we have also been raising alarms about Telegram’s lack of human rights policies, reliable channel of communication, and remedy for its users.” Krapiva stresses that French authorities may try to force Durov to provide Telegram’s encryption keys to decrypt private messages, “which Russia has already tried to do in the past.”
The hashtag #FreePavel has been spreading online, including via X’s CEO, Elon Musk, who has posted numerous times about Durov’s arrest. “POV: It’s 2030 in Europe and you’re being executed for liking a meme,” he wrote on Saturday night in response to a post about the Telegram CEO’s detention. “The need to protect free speech has never been more urgent,” Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who on Friday endorsed Donald Trump for US president, wrote on X, where he referred to Telegram as “uncensored” and “encrypted.”
While Telegram is frequently described as an encrypted messaging app, messages are not end-to-end encrypted by default, and senior executives previously told WIRED that they view the platform as a social network. This is largely due to Channels—a one-to-many broadcast feature that allows unlimited subscribers to view posts.
One of the posts that has gained the most traction on X was by right-wing former Fox News journalist Tucker Carlson, who alluded to the oft-repeated but debatable story that Durov left Russia because the government tried to take over his company. “But in the end, it wasn’t Putin who arrested him for allowing the public to exercise free speech. It was a western country,” Carlson wrote in a post that has so far been viewed at least 5.7 million times. Carlson also linked to an hourlong interview he did with Durov earlier this year, one of the first and only interviews the Telegram CEO has given in recent years.
In Durov’s absence, Telegram’s future looks uncertain to some: “I am in shock, and everyone close to Pavel feels the same,” says Georgy Lobushkin, former head of PR at VK, a social network Durov cofounded, who is still in regular contact with Durov. “Nobody was prepared for this situation.” Asked if he worried about Telegram’s future and who could run the company in Durov’s absence, Lobushkin says: “[I] worry a lot.”
TF1Info, which first broke the news in France of Durov’s arrest, reported that it was “beyond doubt” Durov would remain in custody during the investigation. “Pavel Durov will end up in pretrial detention, that's for sure,” one unnamed investigator told reporters.
“No one in Telegram was prepared for such a scenario,” says Anton Rozenberg, who worked with Durov from the early days of VK in 2007, before working for Telegram from 2016 to 2017. Rozenberg foresaw Durov acquiring the best legal defense money could buy. “But without him, the messenger may have huge problems with management, all crucial decisions, and even payments,” he added, given Durov’s personal involvement in running the company. Rozenberg saw no obvious replacement for Durov, who makes key decisions on nearly all matters at Telegram—financing, development strategies, product design, monetization, and content moderation policy.
For now, everything can be expected to continue as normal, says Elies Campo, who directed Telegram’s growth, business, and partnerships from 2015 to 2021. “Depending on how long this is going to last, it’s like a government, right? There’s this structure, there’s self-momentum.” Campo adds that the company’s staff is small enough—around 60 employees—that the infrastructure won’t be affected.
The challenge, Campo concedes, would be if Durov needs to be physically present to pay providers—something Rozenberg also flagged.
“As far as I know, Pavel did the payments,” Campo says. “So what's going to happen when there needs to be some payments for infrastructure providers, or providers in terms of connectivity—and he's still under arrest?”

BBC: Jordan's free speech boundaries tested with satire
By Yolande Knell, BBC News Middle East correspondent, 5 August 2023
One of the most popular satirical websites in the Arab world has hit back after being banned in Jordan by poking fun at the country's new planned censorship laws.
AlHudood, meaning "the limits" or "the borders", publishes articles and social media posts highlighting the absurdities of Middle Eastern politics and everyday life in a deadpan style. It is in effect the region's answer to the US parody website The Onion or the UK's Private Eye.
Its mocking commentary of the lavish wedding of Jordan's crown prince apparently led to AlHudood being blocked by the authorities last month - just ahead of tighter restrictions on the media being introduced.
Legislation currently going through parliament has been denounced by journalists and human rights groups, who say it will further restrict freedom of expression.
In its response, AlHudood - which was started in Jordan a decade ago - has offered a sardonic guide to publishing content in the country "without being fined, imprisoned, crucified".
Another mock article in a series of reports focuses on a "terrorist" who just started to pose a question on Facebook and was arrested for an "electronic crime".
"I think this will probably create a bigger clash [with officials in Amman] than before, but we feel we have no choice because if we don't do this, the longer-term effect for us and everyone else is going to be so much worse," an AlHudood source tells me from London.
In a region of autocratic leaders where state-run media dominates, AlHudood has thrived against the odds over the past decade and is seen as a breath of fresh air by many of its young followers. It says it reaches a million readers on its website and some 30 million a year on social media, which has become the main forum for voicing criticism of Arab authorities.
"We sort of do the journalism and then repackage it with satire," the London source says. "Satire is really great at working with hypocrisy and corruption."
Dark humour is deployed even on the toughest topics such as civil war, sectarian fighting, immigration and terrorism.
"A lot of the news is so overwhelming and it's difficult to find an angle on it," the AlHudood source adds. "Our approach at least gets people curious about what's happening. It helps create a question in people's heads like: 'What should I think about that?'"
Among the online publication's recent satirical reports was one about the Tunisian president condemning sub-Saharan Africans for stealing places on migrant boats from his own people.
Others drily introduce the two latest candidates "who will not end" Lebanon's long-running presidential vacuum and tell of an agreement between Turkey and Syria "to repatriate 50% of every refugee".
One headline: "Saudi government signs Hajj promotion deal with Cristiano Ronaldo" mocks how widely the superstar footballer has been used in marketing since his lucrative transfer to a Riyadh club.
For AlHudood's writers the opulent celebrations for the Jordanian royal wedding in June seemed ripe for ridicule. While Jordanian law has long criminalised speech deemed critical of the king, from experience its team did not think it was crossing red lines.
A satirical Instagram post depicted Jordanian riot police arresting a man for throwing a party for his baby son on the day of the crown prince's nuptials. There was also a joke threatening fines for citizens who were found not smiling sufficiently. Another gag asked how the costs of the wedding were being covered in the country struggling with rising living costs.
Human rights activists say that in Jordan and the broader Middle East, there has been a recent trend for increased state censorship. There have been many prosecutions of social media influencers and bans on TikTok.
A coalition of civic rights groups led by US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged Jordan's parliament to scrap its new cybercrimes law, saying it could jeopardise free speech and lead to greater online censorship. They criticise how some offences are described in vague terms which could leave them open for the interpretation of prosecutors.
"It makes very clear that the intention of this is to scare people and make them think twice about posting anything online that could be remotely critical or controversial, or something some official won't like. It's deeply concerning," says Adam Coogle from HRW in Amman.
"When you pair it with the real shrinking space for civil discussion that has taken place in this country otherwise in the last few years, we're looking at a clear slide into more authoritarian governance."
The cybercrime bill - which has just been sent back to Jordan's lower house of parliament by the Senate after it drafted small revisions - is also expected to give greater powers to the authorities to block websites and social media platforms.
Jordan's government maintains that the draft law is not meant to limit freedoms but tackle fake news, online defamation and hate speech. It denies trying to stifle dissent but says it wants to protect people from internet abuse or blackmail.
Nevertheless, there has been criticism from Washington, the country's main donor.
In order to work around regional restrictions, AlHudood has now been formally based in the UK for several years. It does not name its contributors from across the Arab world, reducing the chance of direct conflict with officials.
Despite the Jordan ban - which follows on from one in the United Arab Emirates - its writers say that they will continue touching the sensitive nerves of Middle Eastern powers.

Both Aziraphale and Crowley (though we see it more often with Aziraphale) tend to think about relating to other entities (ethereal, occult, human, or sentient-inanimate) as a series of hidebound(ish, I think they are aware of cross-cultural differences) rituals. With scripts, often, not-uncommonly scripts derived from fiction (books for Aziraphale, TV/movies for Crowley). It's very Erving Goffman.
Sushi-tasting, avaunting the local demon, reporting to Head Office, seeking out the Black Knight, announcing a demonic promotion, getting The Facts from a publican, dressing properly for a nanny job, greeting the coffeeshop owner (I love Crowley's genuinely suave "Charmed") and putting in an order... there's Ways these things are Done.
Love is no exception. There are specific ways to show love, to realize love, to enact love. Vavoom and cotillion balls and so on. And all those ways come from humans -- they have to! -- because Heaven and Hell are pretty much devoid of love, always have been. (Her supposed love doesn't count. She damned well doesn't love anybody in the GOverse; the most She seems capable of is deciding to approve of them, or not.)
Aziraphale and Crowley have largely been blocked off from these ways of enacting love due to terror at the possibility of either Head Office locating a clue. (Which, of course, they don't... but it doesn't seem to take much Earth exposure for demons to cotton on at least; look at Shax and Furfur and the rumors Shax mentions.)
So it seems possible to me that Aziraphale and Crowley don't understand or believe they're in love for the longest damn time because, y'know, they haven't done the thing, the thing the humans do that betokens being in love. Whatever they think that thing is (and minds do NOT have to descend to the gutter here, though they certainly can). They probably aren't even thinking of the same thing!
But I hope they figure it out in a putative s3.
Can we go back to this for a sec? To Aziraphale having to explain the concept of being in love to the other angels? Because I cannot imagine what a trip it has to be, falling in love with someone when that is literally not something you are supposed to be able to do. When it is something you barely understand. When the object of whatever this is isn't supposed to be able to feel this way either, except as time goes on you start to realize it's happening to him too. And neither of you can actually talk to each other about it.

I had NativeNews reported yesterday for promoting and endorsing Hamas on their platform, and today @staff messaged me back with this. Chances are I'm not the only person who's reported them before and had nothing come of it. Why @staff refuses to do anything about NativeNews despite them promoting terrorism, engaging in hate speech and misinformation, and repeatedly violating Tumblr's policies is beyond me. 😒
Best I've been able to do is warn my mutuals about NativeNews so they can block them.
One very easy thing you can do to make Tumblr a safer place for Jews is to NOT REBLOG ANYTHING FROM NATIVENEWS EVER. In addition to sharing virulent antisemitism and "news" that amounts to nothing more than screenshots of factually inaccurate tweets with no source whatsoever, they recently SHARED A HAMAS CALL TO ACTION. They are quite literally promoting terrorism. (Yes, I reported it, but knowing Tumblr, it probably won't go anywhere.)
I don't care if the post you're sharing from them has nothing to do with Israel/Palestine or if it contains information that is correct and important to share. This is a blog that is encouraging terrorism and genocide against my people. Do not give them any platform. Do not put this terrorist blog on my dash.

Be Wary of Select Committee on China to Revive Trumpism, Disrupt Bilateral Ties
— Dong Chunling | December 22, 2022
Illustration: Chen Xia/GT
Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader in the US House of Representatives, announced earlier this month that he would create a Select Committee on China if he is elected speaker when Republicans take control of the House in January. And Republican US Representative Mike Gallagher, a longtime China hawk, was named to lead this proposed committee. Gallagher said he planned to focus scrutiny on US investments in China, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. It is obvious the new US congressional tool against China will have an adverse effect on China-US ties.
On December 8, McCarthy and Gallagher published an op-ed on Fox News, stating that "China and the US are locked in a cold war. We must win it."
There are at least three motivations that could explain the Republican Party's eagerness to establish the Select Committee on China. To begin with, the GOP wants to mobilize the US to promote a comprehensive containment strategy against China via, recalling the memories of the Cold War. In addition, Republicans like McCarthy and Gallagher are attempting to put Donald Trump's anti-China political agendas back on the table and to influence Joe Biden's China policy.
Moreover, with the new mechanism, the GOP could create more stumbling blocks for China-US ties during Biden's presidency in the coming two years. The new committee could, to a large extent, play a role of a troublemaker. By frequently attacking China, promoting China-related legislation, it could take Biden administration's China policy under solid control.
After Republicans won a majority in the House during the 2022 midterm elections, McCarthy has been chasing votes to be elected House Speaker. Given this proposed Republican tool - the Select Committee on China - future China-US ties will face three risks.
First, the US new cold war mechanism towards China could be finalized. After the September 11 attacks, anti-terrorism has been the priority in US national security mechanism. Changes started to occur after Trump released his National Security Strategy in 2017, which labeled China as a strategic competitor. And containment of China has been pursued ever since. China-related working mechanisms were later set up in different departments of the US government. If the Select Committee on China is established, it would signal the creation of a grand anti-China mechanism shared by both the White House and the Congress. And the priority of the US national security mechanism will change from anti-terrorism to major power competition. China and the US may become locked in a long-term new cold war.
Second, the hard-line policies toward China from both Democratic and Republican parties may "converge." The wounds on China-US ties, created by the Trump administration have not yet healed, but in fact worsened, with the Biden administration's policies causing new injuries to the relationship. The next US presidential election is not far away. If the two parties continue their competition on who could be tougher against China in order to fight for votes in the coming election, it will objectively promote the convergence of the two parties' anti-China policies, bringing a new adverse impact on China-US ties.
Third, a struggle would occur between US Congress' troublemaking and China-US intergovernmental cooperation. Given the separation of powers in the US political system, Republicans' control of the House will bring the Biden administration some headaches to promote its policies. After the Select Committee on China is established, Republicans will attack China more frequently, which will cause constraints for the Biden administration to show a positive attitude toward China, or to promote dialogue and cooperation with China. China-US ties could then become a "victim" or a "trading good" for the two parties, thanks to their political infighting. How to deal with future China-US relations will be a common test for both countries.
The author is Assistant Research Fellow of the Institute of American Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations.
