growing up as a 00s kid watching cartoons of older kids and teenagers going out doing things without adult supervision. going to the mall and it being a fun place for teenagers. and then actually becoming a teenager in the 10s and oops we killed malls. and the few still standing aren't really optimal for a group of friends to just hang out.
like the closest mall to me has a fucking gucci and versace. theres a tesla dealership inside. the only teenagers going there are probably ones spending their parents money trying to become influencers
the few times my friends and i actually tried a mall hangout there wasn't even a place for us to sit around as a group or anything aside from the food court so we just sat in a corner on the floor tucked away where security couldnt find us playing cards against humanity.
idk where im going with this. they tore down the roller rink in my neighborhood a while ago. the 7eleven closest to my house looks like a wholefoods. the beloved hole in the wall texmex restaurant that my family were regulars at closed down because rent was too high. a huge thrift store that was probably older than I was got torn down.
suburban melancholy i guess.

ok i do need to ask, do we like KNOW know that some egg admins have been playing as other silly npcs during this downtime or are we speculating. like i've seen people identifying admins with varying strength of basis since the eggs first existed but like. for a while there anytime an npc spoke portuguese everyone thought it was richas and then occasionally it would be agent 18 lmao so. . . are we doing that now or do we like Know lmfao
oh and to be clear i do mean varying strength; people were apparently spotting a leo admin's speech patterns earlier and since leo has such a distinct pattern (tho i'm not fluent in spanish LMAO) i'm inclined to believe that. but yea for a while people seemed to think portuguese=richas and to be fair there weren't many non-english npcs for a WHILE and really no portuguese besides richas (that we knew of) but it does mean i'm a bit more skeptical now when the audience starts trying to clock npc admins lmfao

one of the special features on the benny's bathtub blu-ray is a trio of episodes of cirkeline/circleen, a danish kids' show from the late 60s/early 70s. they specifically point out the episode 'escape from america,' which was so controversial it was banned from danish public broadcast.
'surely it can't be THAT insane,' i said.
well, in the span of 15 minutes, we go from 'elf and her mice buddies enjoy a mug of honey' to 'elf and mice buddies are separated while soldiers and pig-faced cops shoot at them, the statue of liberty brandishes a gun (a line from 'all you need is love' plays here), an unseen black mouse who claims to be a member of the black panther party sings a song about racism (with lines like 'so hard is my life because i'm not white' and 'in darkness, all things can happen / and you never know it before / you hear a shot') played over photos of police brutality, culminating in a gunshot and the mouse's death, and a group of native americans engage in a tomahawk-vs-guns fight with the american military while the protagonists talk about how they nearly died.'
sorry i doubted you, denmark.
(benny's bathtub is available directly from deaf crocodile's website or from vinegar syndrome. i highly recommend picking up a copy; it's expensive, but limited-run, and deaf crocodile does great restoration work for obscure media.)

It actually is every bit as great as I remember. This was a really really good show.

I can't stop thinking about how close The Hunchback of Notre Dame was to being a good movie. It was on the cusp of being a truly transformative work that could have stood the test of time. And I can lament on and on about how well done certain aspects are, especially in regards to the two best songs Disney may have ever produced, "God Help the Outcasts" and "Hellfire"
I can go on and on about its amazing portrayal of the abuse of power, especially for religious figures; I can praise the way it portrays Catholic guilt and lust and manipulation and how those things relate to each other. I can applaud it's darker themes handled in an impactful yet not explicit way, including the ones after mentioned as well as murder and ableism and all other manner of things.
I can do that and I can praise that and those will always have a special place in my heart when I think about that movie, but none of that can change the fact that it completely mishandled the portrayal of Romani people. I would like to emphasize that Romani people have considered the word used throughout the movie as a slur at least 20ish years before that movie came out. It was well known. And yet they included it anyway, gratuitously at that. And even more so than that, because many people excuse that as being "time period accurate" (while I heavily disagree because time period accuracy really shouldn't be applied to slurs in a movie targeted towards children) even if that were an acceptable concession, they completely mishandled the representation of Romani people as a whole.
Esmeralda was "the good one", she was the one that changed the main cast's mind about Romani people as a whole. In theory that wouldn't be an issue if her character was used JUST as a way to expand Quasimodo's worldview. He had never met a romani person before, and his only opinions of that group of people came from count frollo's obviously prejudiced perspective. But they didn't do that. She was the only positively portrayed Romani person in that movie. When they go to the (I shit you fucking not) HIDDEN LAIR of alllll the other romani people, the characters are tied up and paraded around on their way to be murdered. Throughout all of this the Romani people in that place our portrayed as criminals, thieves, bandits, and people who revel in violence, which I don't have to say is pretty fucked up, yeah?? They completely dropped the ball and were very wishy-washy with their portrayal of Romani people, which completely undercut the message of the entire movie.
And I can also take the time to say that it could have been a much better movie if they had just changed a few things. If this movie wasn't targeted towards children, if the writers understood the weight and history behind the word used to refer to Romani people, if they had cut the romance, if they had portrayed Romani people in a better light, this movie COULD have been transcendent, could have been timeless.
But those are all ifs and coulds, and so instead I will mourn the movie for what it was and appreciate the parts of it that are good

dude idk why even after the last few years having queer rep i still cry about it. maybe its cause i like to learn about queer history and i just. dude weve come so far. people are getting to be free, and theyre seeing that its an option. theres people like me and my friends on screen and we are the good guys and now we even get to show our flags in cartoons.
i hope the queers of the past are looking down on us with the same joy as i feel, i hope they know that everything they did was worth it, that their effort and their pain wasnt for nothing. they paved the path for us to get right where we are, just as we now continue to pave that path for the ones down the line.
im sorry that im being like, so dramatic and emotional about this, i just think its so important we dont forget those who came before us. and i think its so important that we get to be just as human as everyone else has gotten to be on tv for decades. its not perfect, i dont expect it to be.
im not a queer elder, to many im still a baby gay probably, but im still old enough that i saw a tv where we were still the joke, only a decade or so ago. god forbid we were in childrens media right? now look at us. this is just amazing, and im just so happy.
thank you to everyone whos done this for us. to the tv runners who had to fight even just for two women to hold hands in a way that was implied to be romantic. to the gay weddings and calling them girlfriends and boyfriends and husbands and wives. to using pronouns and words on screen that are still considered a joke to many who cant conceptualize a world bigger than their own.
i cant wait to see the future.

My most controversial video game opinion is that Generation 5 of pokemon was the best generation by far, and every pokemon game after Black and White 2 has gone down in quality.
No, you cannot convince me otherwise. Don't even try. There has yet to be a pokemon game full of as much content, story, and difficulty as Gen 5.
