Aregawi (Ethiopia) người giành HCĐ ở Giải vô địch U20 thế giới năm 2018 khi mới 17 tuổi, chưa được biết đến rộng rãi trước năm nay nhưng đang nhanh chóng tạo dựng được tên tuổi. Cuộc đua 5000m nam khởi đầu khá thận trọng, nhóm trên gồm 6 vận động viên nối chân nhau san sát kéo dài gần 4 km đầu tiên, dẫn đầu là Michael Kibet của Kenya. Khi chỉ còn 2 vòng nữa, Aregawi đã vượt lên tăng tốc độ và với trong km cuối cùng anh đã bứt phá và giành chiến thắng với thành tích 12:58.65.
