CHURNALISM 🌺🌺🌺

"Churnalism" è un termine peggiorativo per una forma di giornalismo in cui, invece di riportare notizie originali, si riciccia materiale preconfezionato come comunicati stampa o storie fornite dalle agenzie di stampa. Il "churnalism" riduce i costi, la raccolta di notizie originali e il controllo delle fonti. L'origine della parola sarebbe una combinazione di "churn" (ovvero "agitare", "rimestare") e "journalism" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churnalism).

Il sito web di Sensible Medicine ha dedicato molteplici pezzi al "churnalism" nella medicina e nella scienza, definendolo come "il resoconto negligente e privo di curiosità di una ricerca biomedica mal condotta. Il churnalismo scambia la vera storia – perché uno studio non è importante o dimostra qualcosa di diverso da quanto sostiene – con un titolo facile." (https://www.adamcifu.com/churnalism). Secondo un recente post del blog di Sensible Medicine (https://www.sensible-med.com/p/churnalism-on-npr), i "sette peccati capitali" del "churnalism" in medicina sono:

1. Dare per scontata la causalità quando uno studio mostrasse solo un’associazione;

2. Estrapolaee e generalizzare senza scrupoli e cautele;

3. Ignorare i fattori di confondimento o di selezione;

4. Non valutare se l’affermazione di un medico o di un ricercatore sia plausibile prima di riportarla tal quale;

5. Usare la “manovra di disclaimer e pivot” – in cui un autore afferma qualcosa del tipo: “Naturalmente questo risultato potrebbe rappresentare solo un’associazione e non una causalità” prima di spendere i successivi otto paragrafi assumendo la causalità;

6. Ignorare l'esistenza di un mondo di ricerche, pubblicate, non pubblicate o “annullate” che potrebbero mettere in discussione la loro tesi;

7. Soprattutto, non manifestare mai alcuna curiosità.

Per combattere questa deriva e i suoi rischi, Sensible Medicine raccomanda di riflettere sempre profondamente su ciò che si sta riportando e cercare punti di vista alternativi, capire che, sebbene lo studio non riesca a mostrare ciò che sostiene l’autore, la ricerca ci dice qualcosa che vale la pena discutere, e promuovere sempre una ricca e vivace discussione.
