As knowledge of the world grew, locating the Garden of Eden became problematic. Explorers and conquerors had traversed the whole world, and they hadn’t come across any magical gardens. But mapmakers still did their best, using obscure clues from the Bible to try to place the garden.
Most maps put Eden in modern-day Iraq, somewhere in the vicinity of Babel and the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
This map from 1700 gives the supposed location of paradise:

Just take a right at Babel, follow the wiggly river, and if you’ve hit the Persian Gulf, you’ve gone too far:

Bilton and Scaggs
Back when I was working in the map of Soho, I got to Bilton and Scaggs Hats and Caps. There is so much to say about this shop and its history, and it is so interesting that it warrants its own post, so here we are
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bilton and Scaggs Publishers was a London publishing firm in the 1600's, we don't really know when it was established though. They were not one of the eight great publishers of London, but they were doing well enough, after all, it was able to survive its three major publishing disasters (which occurred in rapid succession). Alas, it looks like Bilton and Scaggs, publishers went out of business somewhere in the 1890's and the milliner who set up shop there, kept the name. Nowadays, only Aziraphale knows the full story. What follows are details of their disasters. They are quite funny, unless you are Master Bilton or Master Scaggs of course :P
The first one was in 1651; when they accidentally printed the so called Buggre Alle This Bible. This very rare misprinted Bible had a few verses added to Genesis and a variation in Ezekiel. Of course our angel owns one copy. Genesis chapter 3 normally has 24 verses where the last one goes like this: "24. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life." The three additional ones go like this:
25. And the Lord spake unto the Angel that guarded the eastern gate, saying Where is the flaming sword which was given unto thee? 26. And the Angel said, I had it here only a moment ago, I must have put it down some where, forget my own head next. 27. And the Lord did not ask him again.
"It appears that these verses were inserted during the proof stage. In those days it was common practice for printers to hang proof sheets to the wooden beams outside their shops, for the edification of the populace and some free proofreading, and since the whole print run was subsequently burned anyway, no one bothered to take up this matter with the nice Mr. A. Ziraphale, who ran the bookshop two doors along and was always so helpful with the translations, and whose handwriting was instantly recognizable." The other issue with this Bible was a little change in Ezekiel 48:5 and it is the change that gives the Bible its name:
2. And bye the border of Dan, fromme the east side to the west side, a portion for Afher. 3. And bye the border of Afher, fromme the east side even untoe the west side, a portion for Naphtali. 4. And bye the border of Naphtali, from the east side untoe the west side, a portion for Manaffeh. 5. Buggre Alle this for a Larke. I amme sick to mye Hart of typefettinge. Master Biltonn if no Gentelmann, and Master Scagges noe more than a tighte fisted Southwarke Knobbefticke. I telle you, onne a daye laike thif Ennywone with half an oz. of Sense shoulde bee oute in the Sunneshain, ane nott Stucke here alle the liuelong daie inn thif mowldey olde By-Our-Lady Workefhoppe. @ “Æ@;! 6. And bye the border of Ephraim, from the east fide even untoe the west fide, a portion for Reuben.
What we can conclude from here is that Aziraphale owned a bookshop in the 1650's that was in the same block as Bilton and Scaggs Publishers. From the deleted scenes in the script book we know he opened A. Z. Fell & Co. in 1800. But there is nothing saying he couldn't have owned a bookshop with a different name decades or centuries before. The bookshop tour special feature from the S1 DVD says he's had it for 350 years. Counting from 2020, that would put it at around 1670. But if we generalize to around 2000, that means the shop could have been there in the 1650's. This more or less matches this ask where it is explained that Aziraphale bought the land in 1630 and over the next 60 years (1690ish) he expanded and built the current bookshop.
Tumblr media
Sorry for the tangent, back to Bilton and Scaggs.
The second publishing disaster occurred in 1653 when somehow they obtained one of the famed Shakespeare's "Lost Quartos" and subsequently lost it (the three Shakespeare plays never reissued in folio edition and now are totally lost to scholars and playgoers. Their names are "The Comedie of Robin Hoode, or, The Forest of Sherwoode", "The Trapping of the Mouse", and finally "Golde Diggers of 1589." In S2 Episode 6 we see all three folios inside the box Gabriel brought with him. I am sure if asked directly, Aziraphale will assure you that he has no idea how those pamphlets got into that box. It was completely empty only four days ago!
Tumblr media
The third and final disaster happened in 1655 and involved a prophecy book that didn't sell a single copy and ended up being the first book remaindered in England: "The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, witch." Not even the sign "Locale Author" attached to the book helped sell it in the author's home town in Lancashire. At the end the publisher destroyed all the unsold copies. Aziraphale, however, seems to have found the 1655 catalog from Bilton and Scaggs that contained only the 1972 prophecy "Do not buy Betamax."
I do find interesting that although evidently Aziraphale had a close relationship with Master Bilton and Master Scaggs, he still failed to secure a copy of the prophecies. It was printed right there! Next to you! How did that happen? Where were you, Aziraphale??!!

I think at this point I can pretty solidly say that I don't believe in the church anymore. It really hit me today when I was at church, talking to a friend, and he said something about the Garden of Eden being in the americas and I just.... had to keep my mouth shut, but I couldn't help being struck by how implausible that is to me. Like, every history class I've been in has said that humanity originated in Africa. The human geography class I took had us do this entire project where we mapped the spread of humans across the globe and population density across history. I pretty solidly know this stuff at this point, and it just... feels weird to me. really, I don't think I ever fully believed in the church, but I at least entertained the hope that it might be true when I was younger. But at this point, I just feel hollowness where I know I'm supposed to feel the spirit. I'm just exhausted at this point. On a lighter note, though, I have started to appreciate the Bible simply as a work of literature, and I actually do enjoy analyzing it and talking about it with friends.

On the Job minisode and Good Omens as a work on religion
(Note: This was originally a reblog of someone who then expressed that they were unhappy that I reblogged their post. As a courtesy I have reposted it as its own thing- for context, the person was upset that Neil Gaiman's take on religion was stale and said that of course if you have only a surface view of the Torah and the book of Job you'd come away with these kinds of negative impressions.)
I went to Orthodox Jewish day school for thirteen years. I thought the Job minisode was fine, as an adaptation of the story. Not breaking any ground theologically or whatever, but fine. (Though they did definitely get the number of Job's kids wrong, presumably for narrative simplicity, and the shoemaker joke doesn't work because he's really Bildad the ShuCHite.)
And, I mean, I don't think it should be MEANT to be anything but fine...? Good Omens is a fantasy novel in which heaven and hell are both the bad guys- Good Omens the show has basically kept in that model. The whole thing is about a simplistic look at the Christian Bible and a kind of cynical but light hearted agnosticism that doesn't really lend itself particularly to sophisticated religious analysis or whatever. It's not meant for that.*
The Job minisode was written by John Finnemore rather than Gaiman, a writer of whom I am a massive fan and, however, to whom I don't really look for sophisticated religious takes. He's done a Bible/religion sketch or two on his sketch show- I don't particularly love them, they're pretty surfacey- and he's self aware enough to make it very clear that he approaches everything from an "I don't believe in God but I grew up in a Christian country" perspective. (He's a lot more honest about that than a lot of other atheist/agnostic writers I've seen who do takes on religion, incidentally... so many people think they're being "objective" or whatever.)
The thing is, I actually really love the Job minisode as a Good Omens story, working within this complete fantasy world. I was disappointed in a lot of S2 but this felt like the characters, this felt like an interesting meditation on their roles and their choices... I don't know, it just really worked for me.
And I feel like part of the point is to pick one of those "well obviously on the surface this looks a bit fucked up" stories (rather than for there to be an implication that they're the only ones who noticed)- because they're working in a fictional universe in which it's been established since the nineties that heaven/God is at least a bit fucked up (no matter what I as a Jew may personally believe) and so they can just take it and run with it without having to explain! Gaiman did the same thing in S1 with the Garden of Eden and the Ark. It's just a canvas to put an Aziraphale/Crowley plot on. The original book is a Book of Revelations satire!
Honestly, I'm happier to have a pretty basic retelling of a story that's obviously fucked up on the surface, rather than them picking some midrash or something that's more subtle and nuanced and super Jewish-y and then turning it into something about how God or the angels or the demons are bad- partly because Jewish angel/demon stuff doesn't map well onto Good Omens's approach, and also because the whole point of the book from the start has been critical of organized Judeo-Christian (yes I know) religion writ large, and that's not going to change. That was weird for me to get used to as an Orthodox Jewish teen in a Bais Yaakov school when I first read it, but getting past it made me realize that all that meant was that they'd created a Biblical fantasy universe with certain tropes in it.
I think the Job minisode works perfectly well within that particular Biblical fantasy universe, and while I think that you can potentially criticize S1 (and in a slightly different way, the book) for that Biblical satire/fantasy not being particularly sophisticated about religion if that's something important to you, I don't think that it being sophisticated about religion would have improved it as a story.
*I did kinda sorta write a fic that tries to cast Aziraphale and Crowley in a more traditionally Jewish lens and... it was actually really hard. As I said above, the way the Good Omens world is set up doesn't really work for the Jewish thing. I had to make it really clear that angels don't have free will and that Heaven and Hell aren't two different sides.

John Hagee Daily Devotionals 20th December – Micah 5:2.
Tumblr media
TODAY’S  SCRIPTURE : Micah 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.
JOHN HAGEE DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE / SERMON FOR TODAY 20TH DECEMBER 2023.
The prophet Micah uttered these words that are planted like a gem in the Old Testament. God had a plan from the beginning of time that would change the world forever. Mention of “Bethlehem” floods our minds with the familiarity of the Christmas story. From our current vantage point, we know that Bethlehem became holy ground that long-ago night when a babys cry rent the air, and God wrapped Himself in flesh to dwell among us. When Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden, Bethlehem did not exist. But God knew. When the children of Israel exited Egypt for a land flowing with milk and honey, they had no idea what would happen on a Judean hillside centuries later. But God knew. When David sat on his throne in Jerusalem, and generations of kings descended from him, they had no understanding of a baby in a manger. But God knew. When Micah spoke centuries before the blessed event, Bethlehem was a little-known town. But God knew. In an insignificant place on the map, an eternal Ruler would come forth. God knew. Micah spoke. Seven hundred years later, the Messiah was born. Blessing May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. God’s word never fails. Every promise is true. Thanks be to God for the Messiah, His Son and our Savior. Place Your trust in Him alone! Today’s Bible Reading: Old Testament Haggai 1:1-2:23 New Testament Revelation 11:1-19 Psalms & Proverbs Psalm 139:1-24 Proverbs 30:15-16 Read the full article

“He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar and the father of lies and half-truths.” John 8:44 (AMP)
“From the start he was a murderer, and he has never stood by the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he is speaking in character; because he is a liar — indeed, the inventor of the lie!” John 8:44 (CJB)
Ever since Adam and Eve in Genesis 3, the devil has used his evil tactics to manipulate people and situations; to lie and twist words to entice people to sin. Satan whispers to the sinful nature that entered humanity after Adam and Eve fell from grace, with their act of disobedience by eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.
“Satan's target is your mind, and his weapons are lies. So fill your mind with the Word of God.”
This is why God gave Mankind His Word. You need it, because it is the map that helps you negotiate safely through the devils minefields and avoid the traps he sets. These traps are set not just to tempt you to sin, but also to try and get you to believe that you are a useless sinner who is beyond redemption, if you do succumb to temptation (we are all human, it happens). This is one of the worst of Satans evil lies, because it seeks to separate you from your loving Heavenly Father. But it is a LIE.
Friend, there is nothing you have ever done that puts you beyond redemption. You are, and always will be, loved and wanted by God!
The Bible has everything that you need to counteract all the wiles of the enemy! Friend, you have the spiritual authority, given back to you by Jesus (Luke 10:19); and you can use your prayerful authority in Jesus' name at any time you feel under attack. And you also have the spiritual weapons and armor in Ephesians 6, and elsewhere in the Bible, to protect yourself and your loved ones. And something it's useful to remember is that the devil is a defeated foe and this will be his fate:
“So the great dragon was thrown down once and for all. He was the serpent, the ancient snake called the devil, and Satan, who deceives the whole earth. He was cast down into the earth and his angels along with him.” Revelation 12:9 (TPT)
“Then the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the same place with the wild beast and the false prophet—the lake of fire and sulfur—where they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” Revelation 20:10 (TPT)
Fill your mind with the Word. It will keep you safe. And remember, Jesus said this:
“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]” John 16:33 (AMPC)

A few reflections so far.
I have read Genesis before, but not like this. There are so many details I overlooked. Being a literacy coach, I know that this is probably the most complex text I will ever encounter.
Reading this Holy Bible in order to comprehend more of it and know God and the purpose of the text is going to take more time than I thought. I can definitely follow along with this “Bible in a Year” reading plan, but it’s going to take more time than that to truly comprehend it. I found myself spending over an hour in just a few chapters of Genesis.
There is so much background knowledge needed to make the words come to life so I can create an accurate mental model as I read about Noah, and later, Abram. I have been pouring over maps of places described. It fascinated me that the Garden of Eden was written to be located near actual rivers that are present today.
I have heard arguments about whether or not the events in the Old Testament are meant to be taken literally. When I began reading about the flood and the ark, I noted there were details included about the exact day and month that the great flood began. There was also a timeline of how long the flood lasted, and again, the text includes the exact day and month. Why would the author include these details for a figurative story to represent something abstract, like a concept?
I had been reading a book called, “The Sermon on the Mount” by Emmet Fox prior to this Bible study I am doing. The cover says that the book is an interpretation. Events that take place in the book of Genesis like “Adam and Eve”, “The Fall”, and “The Beginning” are mentioned in a symbolic sense that leaves the reader to interpret that these events were just written in as a code to stand for something else. That was my take on it, anyway. And while The Sermon on the Mount is a fascinating interpretation, I have to remember that it is not the actual Holy Bible itself. It is someone’s interpretation.
I think maybe it would help if Bible teachers stopped referring to events that are supposed to be taken literally as “Bible stories”, like something from Disney. To me, hearing “the story of creation” sounds like something that could have been made up. ARE we supposed to take all of this literally? I’ve heard pastors say yes, but when pastors make a point they tend to use sarcasm, passive aggressive remarks, and ridicule others who don’t know what they supposedly know. I don’t think it’s wise to always assume someone knows what they are talking about just because they are in the position to do it.
Back to what I’ve read. It’s taking longer to read the text than I thought it would and I’m willing to do that. It really is so much better than trying to find a YouTube documentary. I pray that God will reveal what I need to know and I am excited about what I’m learning. Looking up the maps of the places described helped me see that Israel is still very important.
I want to blog along the way but I’m not going to put this blog reflection first as I study. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed like I should be blogging more as I read, but this is not for anyone else this is just for me. I’ll reflect when I can and stick to the goal of studying for understanding. I can’t live this life and accept salvation and just refuse to pick up this book and examine it on my own. If interpretations of the Holy Bible are that fascinating, the real source has got to be something I want to experience.

Ravenna, Italy
After spending most of the past six months in Reggio, we decided it was time to see another town. Our English friend, Danielle, conveniently has a car and was keen for a small road trip! Wanting to go see something (not just a pretty small town) we determined the UNESCO Mosaics of Ravenna we’re a good starting point. And it’s only 1hr 45 from Reggio!
Tumblr media
Ravenna has a very convenient free parking spot just outside the city center and a handy tourist map showing all the mosaic spots.
Tumblr media
This is a town who knows why people are there and will very proudly remind you of their 7 UNESCO World Heritage Monuments at every turn. Mosaic stores, souvenir shops, plaques and mosaics on some of their main street signs.
Tumblr media
For 10.50 you receive a combination ticket for the five main monuments. While you can purchase the tickets at any of the sites, I highly recommend not buying them at the biggest church- San Vitale. The line there was super long while there wasn’t even a line where we started our adventure at Museo e Cappella Arcivesovile which is also the closest location to the free parking lot.
Tumblr media
The Museo is nice enough. It’s main thing is marble. It’s full of marble pieces from the first cathedral church and chapel of Sant’Andrea. As well as having other Christian relics dating as far back to 4th and 5th centuries. There is a Paschal calendar which charts the date of  Easter from 532 AD- 626AD.
Tumblr media
An Ivory Cathedra or bishop’s seat from the Byzantine era
Tumblr media
which is considered to be among the finest pieces of ivory carving in Western art. Hence the glass protecting it from the small children.
Tumblr media
Most of the other pieces weren’t protected at all and simply relied on human decency.
Tumblr media
The museum also has the private chapel of the bishop built at the end of the 5th century. The beautiful mosaics featuring Jesus, the apostles and the waterfowl of Ravenna were a quiet place for the bishop to contemplate.
Tumblr media
In each of the places we visited I was struck by the complexity of the mosaics. In the fragments housed in the museum you could get up close and really appreciate all the tiny colored stones to make these immense artworks.
Tumblr media
The craft and precision involved is quite impressive.
Tumblr media
Our next stop is just outside the museum: Battistero Neoniano ( Baptistry of Neon). It’s the oldest monument in the city, erected on the site of an old Roman Bath. It began construction at the end of the 4th century and was finished by Bishop Neon at the end of the 5th.  It was a baptismal tub in the center and the ceiling is covered in beautiful mosaics depicting John the Baptist baptizing Jesus along with a personification of the river Jordan.
Tumblr media
The biggest monument in Ravenna and  one of the most important surviving examples of early Christian Byzantine art and architecture in Euorpe is Basilica San Vitale. Begun in 526AD it was completed in 547. It’s a very impressive building giving the sense of solid permanence and winding lines.
Tumblr media
It has some of the earliest examples of flying buttresses.
Tumblr media
Though the ambulatory and gallery were vaulted in the Middle Ages and Baroque frescoes were added in the late 1700’s. The huge Byzantine mosaics are thought to be the largest and best preserved outside of Constantinople and they are stunningly impressive. When you enter the church you are immediately taken aback by the sheer size of the space and the volume of mosaics.
Tumblr media
They are all rich colors, intriguing and interesting. You could probably sit and study this art for days and each day find something you hadn’t noticed before. It is so detailed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The arch separating the dome from the mosaics depicts Jesus, the twelve Apostles and San Vitale’s two sons. There is also the depiction of Jesus seated on a blue globe offering the martyr’s crown to San Vitale along side depictions from all facets of the bible.
Tumblr media
This ceiling is seriously impressive and just so immense it’s hard to take all of it in.
Tumblr media
The details in everything, the color and the shine makes it seem new even though it is so ancient. Even the marble holding up the church is intricate.
Tumblr media
There are some weird sides as well…mostly in the babies (cherubs?) like this demon child on the fresco, or this marble one.
Tumblr media
But overall, take some time in this church. Constantly look for new details and appreciate the intricacy of design.
Tumblr media
Just outside San Vitale is the Mausoleo di Galla Placida. A mausoleum that houses three sarcophagi. Thought to be built for Galla Placidia, the daughter for Roman Emperor Theodosius I. She died in 450 and along with her remains, there are also sarcophagi for her son (or brother) and her husband.
Tumblr media
The mosaics are lit through alabaster shell windows and depict, among other Christian and apocalyptic symbols, garden of Eden plant and animal life.
Tumblr media
The main ceiling is a starry night sky with a golden cross at the center. It’s amazing the trick of the mosaics in photos making it look almost convex instead of concave.
Tumblr media
The geometry and visual art of the designs should be appreciated.
Tumblr media
We wandered away from San Vitale through the heart of Ravenna. Aside from these ancient and monolithic monuments, the rest of the city has a quite modern feel. The buildings are not like your quintessential small Italian town. Lined with shops and restaurants it wasn’t a place I would go just to go. We did stop of a delicious gelato and our English friends happened upon a chips (fries) shop so of course they had to try it out. Through the main square and down some side streets we arrived at our final stop. The basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo.
Tumblr media
It’s a long hall of a church that was first constructed by King Theodoric the Great as his palace chapel in the 6th century. According to legend Pope Gregory the Great ordered the mosaics to be blackened as they distracted from prayer. It underwent further modernization/ reconstruction throughout the end of the 6th and 7th centuries with the destruction of the mosaic ceiling. It’s now a ornate wood pattern all the way through
Tumblr media
But the mosaics on the sides of the ceiling were preserved. Although on some of them you can still see disembodied mosaic hands where the Byzantines blotted out praying Goths or members of Theodoric’s Court.
Tumblr media
On one side there is a depiction of the 22 Virgins of the Byzantine period led by the Three Magi ( in fabulous leopard-skin pants) with their names Balthasaar, Melchior and Gasapr written above them. This is thought to be the earliest example of these names being assigned to the wise men in Christian art.
Tumblr media
We ended our trip with a delicious sea-food lunch and headed back home. Although Ravenna itself is not very exciting it was very cool to see these ancient and well-crafted works of art. It’s something unique and somewhat unexpected from the exterior of the town and monuments. Plus getting outside of Reggio was a nice change and made us appreciate our little city all the more.

Edward Quin, B.C. 2348. The Deluge. (1830)
Quin’s An Historical Atlas attempts to summarize human history through a series of maps, each illustrating the “known world” at different periods up to 1828 CE.  To keep the maps to scale for easy comparison, Quin would use dark clouds to conceal areas “unknown to the great mass of civilised human beings.”  (You can probably guess how cultural bias affects this premise; for example, Japan is “revealed” when Europeans discover it, even though the Chinese had known it was there for centuries.)
The book starts by asserting the Bible as our only source for information about the origins of the world and humanity.  So the first map attempts to locate key sites from Genesis 1-9, dated 4004-2348 BCE.  The entire project is intriguing (especially when the maps are assembled into a GIF), but I particularly like this first one.
The enormity of the negative space surrounding this cradle of humanity is hauntingly beautiful.  The “known world” is this France-sized clearing in an endless expanse shrouded in mystery.  The labels offer tantalizing insight into places known only from brief references in ancient texts--the Garden of Eden, the Land of Nod, the rivers Pishon and Gihon.  It’s a forgotten realm, described by a forgotten blend of modern historiography, Eurocentrism, and biblical inerrancy.

Timucuan Indians are the Tamerikhans
Timucuan Indians are the copper colored or swarthy Tamerikhans (Tameri-Khans) depicted on the 1657 map of La floridas which has the Nationality of Tamerikaans listed under the plaque of La Floridas on this map.

Moors land
Moorman (Mormon) means Moor, and Blackamoor according to the Dictionary of the English and Dutch Languages. We know that Moor and Blackamoor both mean dark skin or Negro in some dictionaries
Kingdom of Prester John
Closeup view of the 1635 Blaeu Map of Central Africa - the Kingdom of Prester John. Yes, Prester John was the Emperor of Aethiopia (Ethiopia), but which Ethiopia because there was three of them in ancient times.
Prester John Emperor of Abyssinia
This is a painting of Prester John the King of Abyssinia (Ethiopia Superior in the Americas). Prester John was King David of the Bible and John the Baptist (the Fountian of Youth) and he was King of the three Indies/ three Ethiopia's, aka, the World. The Magical kingdom of Disney Land in Orlando, Florida was one of his palaces.
Fountian of Youth Entrance
Florida has the highest concentration of freshwater springs in the world, plus the legend of the Fountian of Youth puts it in Florida (Ethiopia), so yes, Florida would be a good place to look for the fountain of youth but where? We have clues since Saint Augustine Florida is the oldest city and America and there is a Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park located on San Marco Avenue with the words, Fountain of Youth on its entrance.
Map of the Original Garden of Eden
Map of the Original Garden of Eden in Bristol, Florida. This map lists Florida as Ethiopia (Cush/ Kush) and Assyria (Babylon, Akkadian (Acadian), Iran, Turkey: lower Mesopotamia). The Assyrians were allies of the Egyptians, aka, the Tamerikaans (Tameri-khans).
1718 map of La Louisiane
1718 French map of La Louisiane. The Spanish called this landmass La floridas (Tameri). The British called this landmass Carolana (Black land).
Carolana, "The land of the Blacks."
The interesting thing about the Ouachita Mountains and the Arkansas Valley (Indus Valley) area is that there was once a Nahari, Arkansas near this area. Naharina means, "Nile Land," and you can locate Nahari on this 1741 Map of Carolana and the River Meschacebe & c. Yes, Carolana (Carolina) was once a vast Country, and it is part of Grand or Superior Turkey, since we know that North and South Carolina (Kara-lana) in America was ancient Turkey. Carolana is Turkish and it means “Land of the Blacks”, aka, Ethiopia or Tameri (Lower). For example, Caro/Kara in Turkish, means “Black,” while Lana is Turkish and Latin for “Land.”
Tameri, "The land of the Maurs."
In this post is a 1657 map of La floridas that is identical to the 1741 map of Carolana that was shared above, since this map of La floridas is identical in size, shape, and location, so we are dealing with the same land and territory here. The interesting thing about the map of La floridas is that it has “Tamerikaans” (Tameri-Khans), written above the plaque of Florida. Tameri is an old name for ancient Egypt, and it means land of Mary (Mauritania) or the land of the Maurs. La Florida or Carolana (Lower Ethiopia/Egypt) used to be part of the Washitaw Proper, aka, Louisiana county, according to old maps from the 1700's, so... yes..., this landmass was indeed, Tameri, "the Maurs land or the land of the Maurs." Look how big La Florida used to be and it covered several states reaching all the way over into Texas and reached all the way up into Canada. Texas and several other states used to be part of Mexico. Mexico was also Southern Arabia. Mexico means "In the Center of the Moon."

Black Timucuan Indians in Florida 1562-1568. Some of the images in this painting were obviously whitewashed, but we will take it. I love the turbans these Timucuans wore, since they were Ethiopians (Kushites) or Moors.

Timucuan Map and other Florida Indian Tribes.
Additionally, Timucuan are Tamerikhan are etymologically and phonetically the same word due to similar spelling and similar pronunciation. However, let’s break it down even further since the root of Timucuan is Timu (Tame), which is short for Tameri since the vowels are sacred and interchangeable, and were sometimes omitted in words.
The suffix of Timucuan is Cuan, which is obviously Khan since the letters C and U in Cuan are equivalent to the letters K and H in Khan, and these two letters can be substituted because they are interchangeable, like vowels. Therefore, when you combine the prefix and the suffix of Timu-cuan you will form the word Tamerikhan using my breakdown or interpretation. Khan (Can) is an Asian title that means king or priest.
Tamerikhan is one of the root-words of America. For example, T-ameri-khan is American if you remove the letter T from in front of the word Tamerikhan. Tameri or Amaru (T-amaru) is derived from the Sumerian god Amurru. Tameri is also an old name for Egypt, and it relates to Ethiopia Superior, aka, Abyssinia, and Assyrian, which was the huge landmass known as La floridas (Tameri or Ethiopia), La Louisiana (Acadian=Akkadian= Sumerian, Assyrian & Babylonian), and Carolana (Black land). Tameri also means the land of the Maurs or the land of Mary: https://www.americaistheoldworld.com/nineveh-was-jacksonville-florida/
The blog post shared above, “Jacksonville is Nineveh,” proves that Jacksonville, Florida was the Biblical Nineveh (Assyria), and it proves everything stated in the above paragraph. In the said blog post is a map of the Original Garden of Eden that designates the State of Florida as the Biblical Ethiopia (Abyssinia) and Assyria.
The Timucuan Indians had a vast territory of land that covered most of North Florida and central Florida, prior to the Spanish invasion of Florida in the 1500’s, as you can see by viewing the map of the territory of the Timucuan Indians. The territory of Timucua included Jacksonville, Saint Augustine, Callahan, Tampa, Orlando, etc.
The Timucuan were the first Natives of Florida, and they were a race of giants. The average height for the Timucuan man was between 7 and 8 feet tall. The average lifespan of the Timucuan Indians was between 300 and 350 years, according to Dr. Longo’s video from the YouTube channel “Old World Florida” entitled, “Hurricane Special: Audio Didactic + Dr. Longo”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMBQ8Er7Eg0.
Dr. Longo and I believe that the reason the Timucuan Indians were able to live for so long was due to a healthy diet and the fresh spring water from the Fountain of Youth located in Saint Augustine, Florida, which is in Timucuan territory (Ethiopia and Assyria).
Saint Augustine, Florida is the oldest city in America, allegedly founded by the Spanish in the Early 1500’s during the Spanish invasion. However, the problem with this academic lie is that “An archaeological dig in St. Augustine in 2006 revealed a Timucuan site dating back to between 1100 and 1300 AD, predating the European founding of the city by more than two centuries. Included in the discovery were pottery, with pieces from the Macon, Georgia area, indicating an expansive trade network; and two human skeletons. It is the oldest archaeological site in the city.[8]” [end quote from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timucua].
This means that the Venetian (Phoenician) Gothic Architecture (Moorish or Tartarian architecture) that use to cover Saint Augustine, Jacksonville, and all of Florida, was built prior to the Spanish invasion of the 1500’s by the Maurs or the Tamerikhans if you hate the term Maur.
One of the master builders of Prester John’s Kingdom of India Superior/ Ethiopia Superior (Abyssinia or La Floridas) was Saint Thomas the Apostle, the Patron saint of India, who was a magi (magician) that built some of these Gothic structures with the use of magic. “Gothic comes from goetia (‘to elevate by magical force’), whose extension is goeteuein (‘to bewitch’)”. Gothic Architecture is also a Moorish or a Tartarian mode of workmanship, according to the textbook, “A Dictionary of the Architecture and Archaeology of the Middle Ages.” Gothic building is also Castle building that comes from Ethiopia since the oldest castles are in Ethiopia, but which Ethiopia since it was three of them? We have a connection to Ethiopia since Tameri (La Floridas) is Ethiopia Superior and India Superior, aka, the land of the Maurs or Moorenland, which means the country of the Maurs. Ethiopia was Moorenland, according to the definition from Webster’s Dictionary.
The Emperor of Ethiopia Superior (Abyssinia) or La Floridas was Prester John (Saint John). This blog post has a map with Prester John being designated as the Emperor of Abyssinia and Ethiopia Superior. In this post is a painting of Prester John that designates him as the Emperor of Abyssinia and it shows him holding the Phoenician Taw (X) in his hand and wearing green and red, which are the colors of the Maurs (Saracens) and Israel: https://www.americaistheoldworld.com/the-greater-morocco-was-in-the-americas/.
I love the little Dwarf, Smurf, Pygmy, or Leprechaun in the painting that his holding the magical mirror of Prester John that allowed him to see all the events in the world. Prester John was also the Emperor of India and the King of the Tartars (Tartarians), etc. One of my favorite titles that Prester had was the Green man and the Green Knight, since there is an enchanted Green Swamp near his magical kingdom in Walt Disney World Florida: https://www.americaistheoldworld.com/marrakesh-was-orlando/.
Prester John, aka, King David El (the Biblical line of King David) is also associated with the Fountain of Youth that he established in his kingdom in Ethiopia that he bragged about drinking from six times in his famous letter from the year 1165 that went to every ruler in the world, so Prester John correlates with the Timucuan Indians long life span, since Prester John was also known as the immortal priest King since he lived to be over 560 years old; however, some sources say he lived to be over 1200 years old since he had contact with before Christ era Kings like Xerxes and Alexander the Great, who were mere pawns to this powerful Magi King.
Other titles of Prester John: John the Baptish of Bible (Fountain of Youth), Melchizedek (Thoth), Prophet Elijah, Enoch (Thoth), the Fisher King, King of Kings, the Negus (Pharoah), Angel Gabriel (Thoth), Lord Shiva, Enki, Lord of the Rings, Lord of the seen and unseen worlds, King Merovech (founder of the Merovingian Dynasty), the dragon king, the dragon Emperor, the Grand Khan, the Khan father, the Highlander, the King of the Scots, King of the Orient, Grand Master of the Knights Templars, the Knight of the Serpent, the King Knight, the giant slayer, and etc.
The Spanish conquerors described the Timucuan people as Pictish (Picts) in appearance. We know that the ancient Picts of Scotland and Ireland were Swarthy (Black) people from the Iberian Peninsula, according to Romain Historian Pliny.
You can also see post images of the Timucuan people and as you can see, they were swarthy Maurs/ Muurs (Moors) from the land of the Maurs, Tameri or Ethiopia Superior (Abyssinia) in La Floridas. The Timucuan Indians in the images are mostly wearing turbans, which is a Hebrew and Moorish tradition or custom. Dr. Longo whitewashed the Timucuan Indians and other Indian tribes in his video, so please avoid the hijack when viewing it.
But what if La Florida was the original Iberian Peninsula? My blog post, “Gibraltar of the West,” demonstrates that Florida was the original Iberian Peninsula, home of the Garden of Eden, home of the Fountain of Youth, home of the Garden of Hesperides, and the Original Barbery Coast: https://www.americaistheoldworld.com/gibraltar-of-the-west/.
The Timucuan Indians were the Ethiopians and the Assyrians of Florida:
“The Timucua were a Native American people who lived in Northeast and North Central Florida and southeast Georgia. They were the largest indigenous group in that area and consisted of about 35 chiefdoms, many leading thousands of people. The various groups of Timucua spoke several dialects of the Timucua language. At the time of European contact, Timucuan speakers occupied about 19,200 square miles (50,000 km2) in the present-day states of Florida and Georgia, with an estimated population of 200,000. Milanich notes that the population density calculated from those figures, 10.4 per square mile (4.0/km2) is close to the population densities calculated by other authors for the Bahamas and for Hispaniola at the time of first European contact.[1][2] The territory occupied by Timucua speakers stretched from the Altamaha River and Cumberland Island in present-day Georgia as far south as Lake George in central Florida, and from the Atlantic Ocean west to the Aucilla River in the Florida Panhandle, though it reached the Gulf of Mexico at no more than a couple of points.
The name “Timucua” (recorded by the French as Thimogona but this is likely a misprint for Thimogoua) came from the exonym used by the Saturiwa (of what is now Jacksonville) to refer to the Utina, another group to the west of the St. Johns River. The Spanish came to use the term more broadly for other peoples in the area.[3] Eventually it became the common term for all peoples who spoke what is known as Timucuan.
While alliances and confederacies arose between the chiefdoms from time to time, the Timucua were never organized into a single political unit.[2] The various groups of Timucua speakers practiced several different cultural traditions.[4] The people suffered severely from the introduction of Eurasian infectious diseases. By 1595, their population was estimated to have been reduced from 200,000 to 50,000 and thirteen chiefdoms remained. By 1700, the population of the tribe had been reduced to an estimated 1,000 due to slave raids from Carolinian settlers and their Indian allies. The local slave trade completed their extinction as a tribe soon after the turn of the 18th century.” [end quote from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timucua].
The fact that the Timucuan Indians experienced the Slave trade is further evidence that the Timucuan Indians were Negroes or Black people, since they were able to blend in with the dark slaves that were allegedly brought from Africa.
Based upon the above evidence, the Timucuan Indians were also the Tamerikhans (Ethiopians and Assyrians) and their Emperor was Prester John, aka, John the Baptist, since the Timucuan Territory is in his magical kingdom of Ethiopia Superior (Abyssinia).

the mile high city
I go to Colorado more frequently than I probably travel anywhere else. I really enjoy it, not only because I love to go just about anywhere (I mean, have you read about the day trips I go on?!), but because it really does feel so different then where I live. There is so much… nature. And everyone likes nature there. Everyone wears Tevas, athletic clothes at all times of the day, has a dog, goes on hikes, bikes places, and probably eats vegan some of the time. It’s really not like that in Kansas City. Oh, and of course I love the excitement I get when I see the mountains in the background. It still gets me every time.
When I am in Colorado I feel a lot more relaxed with what I am wearing. Most of the time I’ll go on a hike in the morning and not change all day. That means wearing my Tevas, a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and a backpack for the rest of the day. This is very unlike me. But, not unlike the Colorado me.
My sister and I decided to head to Colorado for an extended weekend (four days total) when the college I work had a week break for the students. Since I would hardly have work to do since no one would be here, I decided to take an extra day off and take a little vacation.
I-70 isn’t as bad of a drive as I used to think it was. It’s about 8 hours to where my aunt and uncle live, a little outside of downtown Denver, and it seems to go by pretty quickly. We download podcasts about cults, make playlists, and make stops along the way. This time we stopped at the Garden of Eden in Lucas, Kansas. It’s about the halfway point between Kansas City and Denver. I have always wanted to go, and it did not disappoint! The lawn was filled with figures from the bible, flowers, and even the body of the man who built it (yes, you get to see inside where the man is buried, and his body). It’s only about a twenty minute drive off the highway.
We went to Boulder Beer Co. the first night we made it into town. I have a new favorite beer, Princess Yum Yum, so I was excited to have that on tap. The next day we had planned to go into downtown Denver. I haven’t spent that much time in Denver, because normally I go into Boulder or up into the mountains, so this was something I was looking forward to. We took the train into Denver and stopped first to get coffee and pastries from the Market at Larimer Square. We split an eclair and a spinach pastry. It was amazing.
After that we headed to Uniqlo in the mall area for some shopping, since we don’t have one in Kansas City. For lunch, we ate chicken and waffles and a bbq tofu wrap from City O City, a vegan restaurant I was recommended by many people to try. The rest of the day we spent exploring various shops until we stopped for a quick happy hour cocktail by the train station. There was so much to do that I didn’t get to, I will definitely want explore more.
That night we decided to go back into the city, after having dinner with family, to go to Milk. I had heard so much about this bar that I was very excited to go. We had a lot of fun dancing, paying only a $5 cover for three dance floors and cheap drinks, and then eating at a 24/7 Greek diner at the early hours of the morning.
Saturday we went to Boulder, which is somewhere I feel like I know so well. The farmer’s market in Boulder is always great, so we walked around while we waited for our table at the Boulder Tea Market, along with an art museum that is free on Saturdays. After lunch we shopped around the Pearl Street Mall and went to a few thrift stores in town. To end our day in Boulder, we drive up to Flagstaff Mountain. The view is great, as it always is.
I have included a detailed map of everywhere (almost! I did not include the thrift stores because I can't remember their names) I went in Colorado during the few days. As always, let me know if you follow this map the next time you are in the area, or if you have suggestions for the next time I go!

Reformation
REFORMATION
I’ll post this today [Thursday- 6-14-18] and Hopefully post the Sunday sermon in a few days- I added links to the videos I uploaded the last few nights- and I have started a few new ‘share’ sites and am not sure how they work. So I think some of them ‘re-share’ to my other sites- which is fine. But you might be seeing stuff more than once- and my intent is not to ‘spam’ you guys.
Maybe I’ll add a part of the Sunday post below- It’s basically finished already- but I have a few more verses to copy and paste.
I have seen my homeless friends the last few days and there are always interesting stories to share- but for now I’ll just focus a bit more on teaching- and encourage you to read thru the studies- engage in the text- check the references and all- read the bible passages I teach and see what the Lord shows you.
All of us just have a little glimpse of the wisdom of God- when everyone has a voice- a collective ‘say so’ it benefits us all..
Ok- here's a part of the next Sunday post-
 [part]
This Sunday I made the video right before going into Church Unlimited https://churchunlimited.com/  - I also linked about a minute video of part of the worship service.
I taught on the verses from the mass and will link my past teaching below on Kings 18- which Pastor Bil spoke on.
The Mass verses [added below in the Verses section] were from Genesis 3 and Mark 3.
I spent a little more time teaching Genesis 2 and 3- and will also add my commentary on Mark 3 below.
In Genesis 2-3 we read the account of the creation of man- and his fall into sin.
In Genesis 2:8 we read
And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
God forms man- he prepares him- and then places him into a ‘garden’-
In the New testament we read about the church- the people of God- as a garden.
There are ministry gifts- offices if you will- Apostles- Pastors- teachers- and these leaders are placed into God’s garden- after God ‘forms’ them- he brings them thru Cross experiences and then they are ‘able’ to work in the vineyard of God.
 See?
I also spoke about Adam and Jesus- and how the bible teaches us that Jesus is the ‘Last Adam’-
In Timothy 2 we read-
1Timothy 2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
1Timothy 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
How does this relate to Christ?
You will have to watch the video [Sunday sermon- 6-10-18] to get it.
But I’ll give you a hint-
[I’ll post it all on Sunday- God willing]
Here are the videos I uploaded the last few nights- the teaching for today is below-

My teaching on the Protestant Reformation-
Okay- let’s start a brief overview of some church history. Over the next few weeks I want to hit on the 16th century Protestant reformation and try and cover some of the key figures of the movement.
Martin Luther- the German reformer who had the most influence in the movement was born and raised in Germany.
As a boy his parents were peasant farmers and eventually his dad became a miner and became a very successful businessman- he would go on and eventually own 6 foundries.
He sent his son to law school- and young Luther excelled. At the age of 21 he accomplished more than many of his peers. One day on his way home from the university a thunderstorm broke out and Luther was almost struck by a bolt of lightning.
In fear he cried out to Saint Ann [the mother of Mary] and said ‘Saint Ann- if you save me I will become a monk’ [Ann was the patron Saint for miners- thus Luther was familiar with her].
He was spared and off to the monastery he went. Luther eventually became an ordained priest and even though his dad initially was upset that his son became a priest- yet he was proud of his boy later on.
Luther would eventually make a Pilgrimage to Rome- on foot [a few month walk from Germany to Rome!] and what he saw devastated him. Rome- and the Vatican- were in bad shape. Many of the priests lived in open sin- and the city that he saw as his headquarters for the faith- well it was a mess.
Luther made the famous penitent walk/crawl up the stairs of the Lateran church [this church was the most famous church before the construction of St. Peters. The actual stairs of the church are the same stairs that Christ walked up during his trial under Pontius Pilate. Yes- you hear many ‘stories’ while studying church history- things like the relics or left over pieces of the Cross- well these stories are usually fake. But the stairs of the Lateran church are indeed the same stairs that Christ walked on- the early ‘church’ builders dismantled the stairs at Pilate’s court in Jerusalem and installed them at this church building in Rome].
When Luther got to the top of the stairs- it is reported that he questioned the faith- he had a crisis of faith and thought that maybe the whole thing was a sham.
Okay- as we do a few more posts over the coming weeks- I want you guys to see that the main players of the Reformation were sincere Catholic men who had many questions about what they saw as corrupt in their own church. These men did not want to start a breakaway church- they simply wanted to reform the church they loved.
Keep in mind that Luther excelled during his legal studies- he had a keen legal mind- this will be important later on when we see the debates he has with Rome over the doctrine of Justification by faith- the letters of the apostle Paul [Romans- Galatians] use lots of legal language- and his early education will help him in these debates.
Okay- that’s it for today. Maybe do a Google search on Luther and familiarize yourself a little with the history.
The ‘readings’ for this week are 2nd Samuel 6-7 and Psalms 89. See what they have in common.
   [1768] LUTHER- THE TOWER EXPERIENCE
Let’s start with some church history. In the last post I covered the early years of Martin Luther- probably the most significant figure of the Protestant Reformation.
Luther studied for the priesthood in Erfurt, Germany. He would eventually wind up in Wittenberg- one of the major university cities of the Reformation. Wittenberg was actually a small insignificant town- but the political leader over the region- Frederick the Wise- sought to put it on the map.
He wanted to turn Wittenberg into a German ‘Rome’. He wanted it to become a major Pilgrimage city where Christians would see Wittenberg as a destination- just like they saw Rome.
So Frederick embarked on this plan and he searched thru all the Catholic learning centers of the time and finally recruited 3 top scholars to teach out of the university at Wittenberg- Luther was one of the 3.
Just as a side note- Frederick would succeed at making Wittenberg a major catholic center. He would eventually obtain over 19,000 Relics for the Cathedral church there [Relics were used in the ancient system of buying indulgences and making special pilgrimage trips to important Churches. If the church/city that your making the Pilgrimage to has a lot of Relics- bones or other famous material objects from church history- then the value of the Pilgrimage was high. In theory Frederick collected so many that if you added up all the ‘time off’ from Purgatory- you would get 1 million, 900 thousand years off! Some of the famous relics at Wittenberg were a hair from the beard of Jesus- straw from the manger Jesus was born in- and even a branch from the famous burning bush of Moses! As you can see- there was a lot of commercializing going on- even back then].
When Luther arrived in Wittenberg- he made a name for himself as a top scholar. Many protestants- who revere Luther- usually are not aware that he was a master Linguist [sort of like Rick Perry!]
Yes Luther mastered language- and he showed it in his teaching on the book of Psalms.
In 1515 he began his famous study on the book of Romans and as he went thru the very first chapter- something shook him. He came across the passage that says the Just shall live by faith. This verse first appears in the O.T. book of Habakkuk- and is quoted 3 more times in the N.T.
Luther was very aware of the concept of the righteousness of God- he struggled for many years trying to reconcile his own sinful nature with Gods holiness- but he never really ‘saw’ the biblical concept of righteousness as a free gift that God ‘imputes’ to the sinner.
Yes- for the 1st time in Luther’s life- after his years training for the priesthood- the pilgrimage he made to Rome- the thousands of hours he spent confessing his sins while a monk in Erfurt- he never really understood that the righteousness of God was a free gift given to those who have faith.
It was a giant weight lifted from his shoulders- Luther did not need to try any more to live up to the standards of God- in  a way that would earn for him forgiveness- but he would simply believe- and the righteousness of God would be counted to him as a gift.
Luther would go on to call this an Alien Righteousness- that is it is not found within the person who tries to do all the church works he can- or buying all the indulgences- or any other of the many religious actions he was practicing- but this free gift of being right with God- it came to those who had faith- the Just shall live by Faith- this was indeed good news for the scholar.
As time went on- Germany would get embroiled in the political machinations of the day- Luther’s top political cover was Frederick the Wise- hardly a Protestant Reformer! He spent lots of time trying to make Wittenberg the major Catholic center in Germany.
But at the time there was a political fight raging between Rome and some of the other nation/states. There was a figure head office called the Holy Roman Emperor. This office was really in name only- but it rose up during the first Millennium of Christian history and sought to replace the influence that Rome was losing.
So you had France, Spain and England all vying for the title. Eventually it would go to King Charles of Spain- but the Pope- who played a major role in nominating the person- he did not want any of these top 3 to get the position. Henry the Eighth was the king of England at the time- and these ‘3 kings’ were sort of in competition with Rome- so the Pope tried to get Fredrick the Wise to throw his hat into the ring.
Frederick just happened to be one of the Electors of this position.
His actual title was The Elector of Saxony.
So Fredrick had lots of influence- and as Rome would eventually but heads with the stubborn bull of Wittenberg [Luther] Frederick would become the major protector of Luther.
Okay- I think we’ll stop here for today. The experience that Luther had- the enlightenment that came to him while teaching the book of Romans- this is often called The Tower experience of Luther- it took place in the year 1515.
  [1770] TREASURY OF MERIT
Let’s pick up where we left off 2 posts back. We were talking about Martin Luther and the events that led up to the Protestant Reformation.
In order to understand the key act that caused the protest- we will have to teach some Catholic history/doctrine.
In the 16th century Pope Julius began the effort to build St. Peters basilica in Rome. He got as far as laying the foundation and died. Pope Leo the 10th would pick up after him.
The church needed to raise money for the project- and the German prince- Albert- would play a major role.
It should be noted that both Catholic and Protestant scholars agree that the Popes of the day were pretty corrupt. They came from what we call the Medici line of Popes.
If you remember last month I wrote a post on the Renaissance- I talked about the Medici family and how they played a major role in supporting the Renaissance that took place in the 13th century in Florence Italy that would spread to the region.
Well this very influential family also played a big role in who would get top positions in the church.
At the time of Luther and prince Albert- if you had the right connections and the money- you could literally buy a position in the church.
Albert already held 2 Bishop seats- and there was an opening for an Archbishops seat in Mainz [Germany] and he wanted that one too.
It should be noted that official Canon law [church law] said you could only hold one seat at a time- Albert was bidding on his 3rd one! And he was too young for all of them.
So even the Pope and the officials held little respect for what the church actually taught at the time.
So Albert opens up negotiations with Leo- and the bidding starts AT 12,000 Duckets [money] Albert counters with 7,000- and they agree on 10,000. How did they justify the numbers? 12- The number of Apostles. 7- The 7 deadly sins. 10- The 10 commandments.
Yes- the church was pretty corrupt at the time.
So Albert works out a plan with Leo- he will borrow the money from the German banks- and pay the banks off by the Pope giving Albert the right to sell Indulgences.
 What’s an Indulgence?
Okay- this is where it gets tricky.
The ancient church taught a system called The Treasury of Merit. This was a sort of spiritual bank account that ‘stored up’ the good deeds of others over the years.
You had the good deeds of Jesus at the top- but you also had Mary and Joseph- the 12 Apostles- and other various saints thru out time.
The way the ‘bank’ worked was you could tap into the account by getting a Papal indulgence- a sort of I.O.U. that had the Popes guarantee that it would get so much time out of Purgatory for a loved one.
The actual sacrament that accesses the account is called Penance [confession].
When a penitent does penance- he confesses his sin to the priest- and he is absolved by the authority of the church that the priest has. The priest usually tells the person ‘say so many Hail Mary’s- Our Father’s’ and that’s a form of penance.
One of the other things the church practiced was called Alms Deeds. This term is found in the bible and it means giving your money to the poor- it is a noble act that Jesus himself taught.
In theory- part of the sacrament of penance was tied into Alms Deeds- you can access the account thru the practice of giving to the poor- which also meant giving to the church that helps the poor- and in the hands of the Medici line of Popes- meant outright giving money to the Pope.
So now you see how the abuse worked its way into the pockets of the faithful.
Albert now had the permission from Leo to sell these indulgences in Germany- and he would pick a certain corrupt priest to sell them in a place called Saxony- the region where Luther operated out of.
It should be noted that the Catholic Church never taught the crass act of ‘buying your way out of Purgatory’. The practice of including giving money as a part of the sacrament of penance was tied into the biblical principle of giving to the poor- a good thing.
But Tetzel and others abused the official meaning of the indulgence- and did make it sound like you could by your way out of Purgatory [in theory- a loved one might be in Purgatory for so many years- and through the indulgence you are actually getting time off for them- because the good deeds of others are now applied to the account].
The money Albert would raise- half would go to Rome for the building of St. peters- and half would go to pay off the banks in Germany- it was a sad system- and a sad time for the church as a whole.
It would be wrong to judge the entire church at the time as being corrupt- you did have many sincere Priests and Catholic men and women who saw the abuses and did not take part in them.
But there was corruption at the top- and this would eventually lead to the breakup of the church- and the launching of what we now call the Protestant Movement.
As a side note- it should be said that many Catholics and Protestants are not aware of the whole treasury of merit system- and the church never officially changed her position on the doctrine.
There were 3 Church councils since the time [Trent- 1500’s, Vatican 1- 1800’s and Vatican 2- 1962-65]. The Treasury of Merit never came up for change.
Obviously Protestants don’t believe in Purgatory- and it’s not my purpose in these posts to change Catholics into Protestants or vice versa- but to give all sides a clear view of the issues that divided us- and to try and be honest- and respectful during the process.
Does the bible teach anything like a Treasury of Merit? Well actually it does. The bible teaches that the righteousness of Christ is the treasury that people can access- by faith- and become righteous in the sight if God.
The idea- applied to Christ- is good.
But in the hands of the Medici Popes- and the ambitious prince of Germany- it would lead to disaster.

 [1773] LUTHER CLASHES WITH ROME
Let’s do another post on the Protestant Reformation. I’ll probably only do a few more before I transition into another study.
By the way- all the studies I do thru out the year are posted in the February posts of the following year.
Okay- last we left off Luther was just beginning to butt heads with the church [Tetzel] over the abuse of the sale of indulgences that was going on in Germany.
In a previous post I mentioned how the priest- Tetzel- was selling these ‘get out of Purgatory’ type coupons in the area where Luther operated out- Saxony.
Actually- Tetzel never entered Saxony itself- but was selling these out of a bordering city- and many of Luther’s students/parishioners were being hoodwinked into spending their money to rescue a loved one out of Purgatory.
Tetzel is known for a jingle he started in connection with the sale of the indulgence- it goes ‘as soon as a coin in the coffer rings- a soul in Purgatory springs’- ouch!
Like I said before- the church never taught this- they did teach the Treasury of Merit [previous post] but the way Tetzel used it was a real abuse of the teaching of the church at the time.
Now- Luther responds to the abuse by writing the famous 95 thesis. This is the act that is often associated with the launching of the Reformation- the act that got the ball rolling.
The 95 thesis were simply 95 questions challenging the whole practice of the sale of indulgences- there was no mention of the doctrine of Justification by Faith- which will become the trumpet sound that springs out of the Protestant Reformation.
Luther takes these questions- written in Latin- and nails them to the university church door at Wittenberg. Sometimes while reading church history this ‘nailing to the door’ is seen as a sort of vandalism – you know- ‘he nailed them to the door!’
In actuality Luther was simply using the system of the day that one scholar would use in order to bring up an official point of contention with the church- Luther wrote the Thesis in Latin- which was the scholars language- not the language of the common man.
But Luther’s students quickly translated the Thesis into the vernacular [German] and it was said that in 2 weeks the paper made it into every village of Germany.
The challenge was a spark in the lives of many Christians who also believed the church was off track and that someone needed to rebuke her- and they picked Luther as the man for the job.
Now- the Catholic church wanted Luther to go to Rome and discuss the situation there- Luther’s friends warned him not to go- so they agreed to meet- a few times- in Germany.
The first meeting was in 1518 at Heidelberg- Luther actually gave a great defense of his argument and convinced some other top Catholic scholars that he was right [as a side note- the church had already scheduled this meeting because of a controversy that rose up between the Augustinian order of monks and the Dominicans. They were debating over which philosophy was more consistent with church teaching- Nominalism or Realism- for those of you who have read the posts this past year- I taught this when doing our posts on philosophy].
One man- Martin Bucer- wrote a stirring account of Luther- Bucer would later influence another young Swiss priest with  Reformation teachings- his name is John Calvin.
As a side not Calvin will become one of the 3 big heavy hitters of the 16th century Reformation [Ulrich Zwingli is the 3rd].
Luther will meet again in Augsburg- and debate the leading Catholic scholar of the day- Cardinal Cajetan.
Then he goes to the city of Leipzig- and debates the leading German scholar- Johann Eck.
And his last meeting with the church will be at the famous Diet of Worms [pronounced- Vurmtz] and it will be here that Luther makes his last stand and officially will break with the church and launch the Protestant Reformation.
It should be noted that Luther held what we call a High Church position for most of this time- he still saw the church at Rome- and the Pope- as a legitimate expression of true Christianity- his beef was what he saw as an abuse of the system- by the priest Tetzel.
As time progressed- the other beliefs of Luther- founded upon the bible- did come into contention with Rome.
The main disagreement eventually became the teaching in the bible called Justification by faith. I have written a study on the topic on the blog- I have also written a bible study on the book of Romans and Galatians.
For those of you who can- try and read Romans chapters 2-4 and Galatians 2-3- these are the key chapters that cover the teaching.
Down the road I will cover the official teaching of both the Protestants and the Catholics on the doctrine of justification- the Catholic Council of Trent- referred to as the Counter Reformation- spells out the official teaching of Rome- and there are a few papers put out by the Reformers that explain their belief.
Since the 16th century Reformation there have been efforts made by Protestants and Catholics to bridge the gap as much as possible- to try to come to some common language since the historic split.
I like some of the efforts that have been made- and recently both groups put out a statement that jointly said we all believe that we are saved by Gods grace thru Christ- that’s good.
But as we get into some of the actual discussion- you will see the points at which the 2 sides disagreed- and the main one was on the act- the actual thing that happens- when a person is declared just- the Reformers said it takes place when a person has faith- believes- the Catholic church said it takes place at baptism- water baptism.
This- as well as a few other things- will be a defining distinction between the 2.

  1775- WHAT DID HE SAY?
Let’s do a little review today. I know the history posts go a little long sometimes- and many Christians do not see the value in studying church history.
But I have found over the years that a lot of independent type churches- good men- good people- but cut off from the broader church- well these churches have a tendency to get off in a rut- a particular doctrine or style of teaching- and after a while it becomes impossible to get these good church folk back on the balanced course.
A few examples. Many years ago- as a young Pastor- I had lots of good Pastor friends who too were doing their best to do what they felt God wanted.
At the time- I began having difficulty with many of the most popular interpretations of the bible that these good men were using.
After a while I realized that some of the stuff was so off course- that if they didn’t make some major course corrections at the time- that they were going  to end up spending their entire Pastorate teaching stuff that is out right false.
I have talked a lot about this over the years- and the examples are too numerous to cover them all- but a good example is the ‘Camel going thru the eye of a Needle’ verse.
One time Jesus and his men were going thru town and a young  rich guy asks Jesus what he must do to be saved.
A pretty straight forward question- right to the point.
Jesus tells the guy to keep the law- the guy asks which ones.
Ah- now you’re digging yourself in brother.
So Jesus says to love God and his neighbor- these are the top ones.
He asks ‘and who is my neighbor’?
Jesus goes on and gives an explanation- and he also tells the guy to go and sell all he has and give it to the poor- and follow him.
The guy goes away sad  because he was rich.
Then Jesus says ‘it’s harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven than for a Camel to go thru the Eye of a Needle’.
 What?
The disciples [I think Peter?] say ‘then who can be saved’?
Jesus says with men it is impossible- but not with God- with God all things are possible.
[just a quick side note- I haven’t read all these stories in a while- trust me- they are all in the bible- but I might have mixed a few together- but the main point stays the same]
Okay- in context- what could Jesus be saying about the camel and the needle?
It sure seems like he’s using a figure of speech  that would mean ‘look- the guy is too attached to his money to fully give himself over to being a follower of me- maybe down the road he will change- but he’s not ready yet’.
Seems reasonable to me- don’t you think?
But wait- in the group of pastors/teachers that were popular at the time- one of the main teachings was how to get rich- and they saw financial increase as the main thing- I mean that’s what they focused on  all the time.
So what do you do with verses like these?
You simply change them- you make them say what you want.
So the ‘true’ explanation for the Camel and the Needle became ‘the Eye of the Needle is the name of a low passage way thru the wall into the city- and the merchants- if they have lots of stuff- well the Camel has to stoop low to get thru’.
Aha- so what seems to mean ‘rich folk will have a hard time making the kingdom’ really means something else- as a matter of fact- it means the opposite- because the Camels that have to ‘scooch’ belong to the owners who have a lot of goods- thus the Camel has to get low.
Okay- maybe as rank amateurs this stuff was not the unpardonable sin- but many of these men are still teaching this type of stuff- and this one example is the tip of the iceberg- I could go on for a long time quoting all them but that’s not the point for now.
The main point is- if Christians separate themselves from the broader church- not just talking about ‘going to church’ but talking about the broad understanding that the people of God have- the books and teachings of those who have gone before us- not just one small group- but the whole community- then we will avoid these kinds of pitfalls.
As we do a few more posts in the coming weeks on church history- we will see this was one of the things restored by the Protestants Reformers during the 16th century.
Luther restored what’s referred to as the Literal Sense- that when you read the bible- you should be able to take it at face value- as much as possible.
Sure- you also want to ‘hear God’ speak in a personal way- but if what your hearing is the exact opposite of what the text is saying- well then we do have a problem.

  1782- PROTESTANT REFORMATION CONCLUSION
Today let’s finish up the study on the Protestant Reformation. We left off on Luther disputing with the church over the doctrine of how a person becomes just in the sight of God- is it by works or faith?
Now- to the surprise of many Protestants [and Catholics!] both sides agreed that a person cannot be justified by works.
Yes- the Catholic Church rejected what was known as Pelagianism. In the early centuries of the church there was a Catholic priest- named Pelagius- who taught that people had the ability within themselves to obey Gods law and become saved that way.
He rejected the doctrine of original sin and another famous bishop- Saint Augustine- would refute Pelagius and teach salvation comes by the Grace of God.  The official Catholic position was to reject Pelagius and accept Augustine.
 Okay- then where’s the difference?
The church council that spells it out is the Council of Trent [named after the Italian city where the council took place in the 1500’s- Trento].
This council is often referred to as the Counter Reformation. The church rejected the Protestant line- but also acknowledged the need for reform and made some changes.
This is the council where the church rejects Pelagianism- and also says the position of Luther [Justification by Faith ALONE] was flawed.
The church appealed to the New Testament letter of Saint James- where James uses an example from the life of Abraham [found in Genesis 22] where Abraham obeys God and is willing to sacrifice his son Isaac on an altar.
Of course this never happens- God was simply testing Abraham- but James says this act of obedience justified him in Gods sight.
James says ‘see how a man is justified by works- and not by faith ALONE’.
The argument from Rome was Faith played THE major role in justification- but was not sufficient by itself- there had to be righteous works eventually associated with it in order for God to say ‘you are just’ [saved].
Luther disagreed and said God justified Abraham before he had good works- we find this in Genesis 15. God says to Abraham ‘look- count all the stars- so shall your offspring be’ and Walla- the bible also says Abraham was justified in God’s eyes the moment he believed the promise.
 Who’s right?
 Actually they both are.
I have taught this a few times over the years- and it would take too much time to re-do right now.
But I believe James and Paul [the 2 who debate this in the bible] are simply looking at different aspects of salvation/justification.
Paul emphasized faith- and James showed us how true faith always has works with it.
When you read the statements that came out from the council of Trent- some of them do seem to indicate that both sides might have been talking past each other at some points.
In the heat of the day they were too quick to condemn the other side- without really trying hard to achieve unity [like politics!].
The 6th session of Trent was the one where the church dealt with justification [how we become saved in Gods sight].
Rome made a distinction between mortal and Venial sin in the council- the church said that Baptism is the INSTRUMENTAL CAUSE of justification. Yet faith is the Root- Foundation and Initial act that justifies.
Rome also taught that Mortal sin kills the grace in the soul that brings justification- and when a person commits a mortal sin- they need the ‘2nd plank of justification’ in order to be brought back into a state of Grace.
This 2nd Plank is the Sacrament of Penance [confession]. Catholic Moral Theologians use an example to show the difference between Mortal and Venial sin.
Drinking- if you take a drink [alcohol] not a sin.  If you get tipsy- Venial- and if you get flat drunk- mortal.
This is a true teaching by the way- not making this up.
Catholic scholars are not in total agreement on all the Mortal/Venial sins.
Some teach that missing Mass on Sunday is a Mortal sin.
I just threw this in to show you the debates that take place.
The teachings from Trent are referred to as Tridentine.
The Protestants [early on] rejected the belief that a person can lose Gods grace once he has it- later on the Protestants would divide- severely- over this teaching- Predestination and the Perseverance of the Saints.
But early on all the major Reformers did indeed teach this.
Luther believed in the doctrine of Predestination just as much- if not more- than John Calvin.
But sometimes in these history shows they get this wrong and say Luther and Calvin disagreed on it- that’s a common mistake that you hear every so often.
Luther actually wrote a book dedicated to the subject [The Bondage of the Will] Calvin never wrote a book solely on the subject.
Okay- as we end this brief study of the Protestant Reformation- you could also call it a primer on Catholic doctrine [short one].
Why is it important that we study this?
In John chapter 17 Jesus said that he desired unity for all of Gods people- and many of these divisions- which date back 500 years- are commonly misunderstood on both sides.
It is common in our day to run across an ex Catholic who might say ‘you know- I left the church because I don’t believe I need to confess to a priest’ or ‘the Catholic church teaches you are saved by works’.
The original Reformers did not have a problem with confession- the Lutherans carried the practice over into their communion.
And like I just showed you- the Catholic church rejected the doctrine of being saved ‘by works’ [Pelagianism] and simply emphasized the teaching found in the bible- the book of James- and focused more on James than Paul [who the protestants focus on].
So yes- there are still differences- but if we are not informed- then it makes it harder to strive for unity- and at the end of the day God does desire unity for all his people.
The other day I quoted the great Civil rights leader- MLK. In one of his famous speeches that’s played when we celebrate his life- you hear Martin say that not only was he seeking unity among the races- but also in the church.
He said he wanted to see Catholics and Protestants- as well as Blacks and Whites- sit down together- he referred to us all as Gods kids.
I think we should strive to achieve the desire of Martin- and Jesus.
 Amen.

A guard against the counterfeit
is what Light does for the heart & mind
to see Love in its True nature.
A point illuminated by Today’s reading from the Letter of First John:
[A Warning against False Teaching]
Delightfully loved friends, don’t trust every spirit, but carefully examine what they say to determine if they are of God, because many false prophets have mingled into the world. Here’s the test for those with the genuine Spirit of God: they will confess Jesus as the Christ who has come in the flesh. Everyone who does not acknowledge that Jesus is from God has the spirit of antichrist, which you heard was coming and is already active in the world.
Little children, you can be certain that you belong to God and have conquered them, for the One who is living in you is far greater than the one who is in the world. They belong to this world and they articulate the spirit of this world, and the world listens to them. But we belong to God, and whoever truly knows God listens to us. Those who refuse to listen to us do not belong to God. That is how we can know the difference between the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.
Those who are loved by God, let his love continually pour from you to one another, because God is love. Everyone who loves is fathered by God and experiences an intimate knowledge of him. The one who doesn’t love has yet to know God, for God is love. The light of God’s love shined within us when he sent his matchless Son into the world so that we might live through him. This is love: He loved us long before we loved him. It was his love, not ours. He proved it by sending his Son to be the pleasing sacrificial offering to take away our sins.
Delightfully loved ones, if he loved us with such tremendous love, then “loving one another” should be our way of life! No one has ever gazed upon the fullness of God’s splendor. But if we love one another, God makes his permanent home in us, and we make our permanent home in him, and his love is brought to its full expression in us. And he has given us his Spirit within us so that we can have the assurance that he lives in us and that we live in him.
Moreover, we have seen with our own eyes and can testify to the truth that Father God has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Those who give thanks that Jesus is the Son of God live in God, and God lives in them. We have come into an intimate experience with God’s love, and we trust in the love he has for us.
God is love! Those who are living in love are living in God, and God lives through them. By living in God, love has been brought to its full expression in us so that we may fearlessly face the day of judgment, because all that Jesus now is, so are we in this world. Love never brings fear, for fear is always related to punishment. But love’s perfection drives the fear of punishment far from our hearts. Whoever walks constantly afraid of punishment has not reached love’s perfection. Our love for others is our grateful response to the love God first demonstrated to us.
Anyone can say, “I love God,” yet have hatred toward another believer. This makes him a phony, because if you don’t love a brother or sister, whom you can see, how can you truly love God, whom you can’t see? For he has given us this command: whoever loves God must also demonstrate love to others.
The Letter of 1st John, Chapter 4 (The Passion Translation)
Today’s paired chapter of the Testaments is the 7th chapter of 2nd Chronicles that continues with the dedication of the First Temple in Jerusalem:
[The Temple Dedication]
When Solomon finished praying, a bolt of lightning out of heaven struck the Whole-Burnt-Offering and sacrifices and the Glory of God filled The Temple. The Glory was so dense that the priests couldn’t get in—God so filled The Temple that there was no room for the priests! When all Israel saw the fire fall from heaven and the Glory of God fill The Temple, they fell on their knees, bowed their heads, and worshiped, thanking God:
Yes! God is good!
His love never quits!
Then the king and all Israel worshiped, offering sacrifices to God. King Solomon worshiped by sacrificing 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep at the dedication of The Temple. The priests were all on duty; the choir and orchestra of Levites that David had provided for singing and playing anthems to the praise and love of God were all there; across the courtyard the priests blew trumpets. All Israelites were on their feet.
Solomon set apart the central area of the courtyard in front of God’s Temple for sacred use and there sacrificed the Whole-Burnt-Offerings, Grain-Offerings, and fat from the Peace-Offerings—the Bronze Altar was too small to handle all these offerings. This is how Solomon kept the great autumn Feast of Booths. For seven days there were people there all the way from the far northeast (the Entrance to Hamath) to the far southwest (the Brook of Egypt)—a huge congregation. They started out celebrating for seven days, and then did it for another seven days, a week for dedicating the Altar and another for the Feast itself—two solid weeks of celebration! On the twenty-third day of the seventh month Solomon dismissed his congregation. They left rejoicing, exuberant over all the good God had done for David and Solomon and his people Israel.
[God’s Confirmation]
Solomon completed building The Temple of God and the royal palace—the projects he had set his heart on doing. Everything was done—success! Satisfaction!
God appeared to Solomon that very night and said, “I accept your prayer; yes, I have chosen this place as a temple for sacrifice, a house of worship. If I ever shut off the supply of rain from the skies or order the locusts to eat the crops or send a plague on my people, and my people, my God-defined people, respond by humbling themselves, praying, seeking my presence, and turning their backs on their wicked lives, I’ll be there ready for you: I’ll listen from heaven, forgive their sins, and restore their land to health. From now on I’m alert day and night to the prayers offered at this place. Believe me, I’ve chosen and sanctified this Temple that you have built: My Name is stamped on it forever; my eyes are on it and my heart in it always. As for you, if you live in my presence as your father David lived, pure in heart and action, living the life I’ve set out for you, attentively obedient to my guidance and judgments, then I’ll back your kingly rule over Israel—make it a sure thing on a sure foundation. The same covenant guarantee I gave to David your father I’m giving to you, namely, ‘You can count on always having a descendant on Israel’s throne.’
“But if you or your sons betray me, ignoring my guidance and judgments, taking up with alien gods by serving and worshiping them, then the guarantee is off: I’ll wipe Israel right off the map and repudiate this Temple I’ve just sanctified to honor my Name. And Israel will be nothing but a bad joke among the peoples of the world. And this Temple, splendid as it now is, will become an object of contempt; tourists will shake their heads, saying, ‘What happened here? What’s the story behind these ruins?’ Then they’ll be told, ‘The people who used to live here betrayed their God, the very God who rescued their ancestors from Egypt; they took up with alien gods, worshiping and serving them. That’s what’s behind this God-visited devastation.’”
The Book of 2nd Chronicles, Chapter 7 (The Message)
my personal reading of the Scriptures for Thursday, february 4 of 2021 with a paired chapter from each Testament of the Bible, along with Today’s Psalms and Proverbs
A post by John Parsons that looks into the significance of our Hebraic History:
In our Torah portion this week (i.e., Yitro), God revealed the Ten Commandments (i.e., עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדִבְּרוֹת, literally, “the ten declarations”) to the Israelites at Sinai, a dramatic event that represented the giving of the law, or the “Old Covenant,” to Israel. Now while a case can surely be made that the revelation at Sinai represented an “older covenant” (see 2 Cor. 3:14; Heb. 7:18, 8:6,13), when looked at from another perspective, Sinai actually represented a sort of *new* covenant, since it was given later and served as a proviso to the covenant given earlier to Abraham (Gal. 3:18). The culmination of the covenant at Sinai was the revelation of the Altar (i.e., the Tabernacle), which pictured the sacrificial blood “covering” the tablets of God’s judgment. This, in turn, recalled Abraham’s great sacrifice of his son Isaac (the Akedah), which further recalled the very first sacrifice of the Bible, namely the lamb slain in the orchard of Eden to cover the shame of Adam and Eve's sin (Gen. 3:21; Rev. 13:8). Therefore it was the promise God made to Eve regarding the “Seed to Come” that was the original covenant (Gen. 3:15), and it was this covenant that was later fulfilled by Yeshua, the “Serpent Slayer” of God (Num. 21:9; John 3:14). This is the “Gospel in the Garden” message, the original promise of the lamb of God that was slain from the foundation of the world... In other words, the “new covenant” (בְּרִית חֲדָשָׁה) may better be understood as the fulfillment of the original covenant, the promise to redeem all of humanity from the curse of sin and death. The redemptive plan of God therefore moves in an ascending circle. The "Tree of Life" reaches back to the orchard of Eden and extends into the World to Come...
Because there is so much confusion regarding the topic of the role of the law, particularly among certain "Messianic believers," I would like to reiterate a few things mentioned elsewhere on the Hebrew for Christians web site. Let me first remind you that the legal aspect of the “Torah” refers to the subset of the written Torah called Sefer Ha-Brit (סֵפֶר הַבְּרִית), a portion that defined various ethical, social, and ritual obligations given at Sinai (Exod. 24:7-8). It is a “category mistake” to simply regard the first five books of the “Torah” as the “law,” since the law was given later in sacred history, after the Exodus. Moreover, the Book of Genesis reveals that the very first “priest” (i.e., kohen: כּהֵן) was neither a Jew nor a Levite nor a descendant of Aaron, but rather Someone who is said to have “neither beginning of days nor end of life” but is made like (ἀφωμοιωμένος) the Son of God, a priest continually (Heb. 7:3). This priest, of course, was Malki-Tzedek (מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק), the King of Salem (מֶלֶךְ שָׁלֵם) to whom Abraham offered tithes after his victory over the kings (Gen. 14:18). The author of the Book of Hebrews makes the point that the priesthood of Malki-Tzedek is greater than the Levitical priesthood and is therefore superior to the rites and services of the Tabernacle (Heb. 7:9-11). It was to Malki-Tzedek that Abram (and by extension, the Levitical system instituted by his descendant Moses) gave tithes and homage -- and rightly so, since Yeshua is the great High Priest of the better covenant based on better promises (Heb. 8:6). As the Scriptures teach, in everything Messiah has preeminence (John 5:39; Luke 24:27; Col. 1:18). [Hebrew for Christians]

Prophecy
“I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.” (Deuteronomy 18:18)
Two types of prophecy must be distinguished. When a prophet foretells or predicts, he represents the future in light of the present. But frequently the prophetic message consisted of rebuking, reproving, counseling, or admonishing, i.e., forth-telling rather than foretelling. As such, he portrays the present in light of the future.
It is the predictive type of prophecy that provides such a strong argument for rational faith. Neither human intuition about the future nor limited Satanic control of the future can account for the hundreds of specific biblical prophecies that have been literally and specifically fulfilled. These could only come by divine revelation from the One who both knows and controls the future.
Actually, predictive prophecy provides a double defense: Not only does it prove the divine origin, inspiration, and authority of Scripture, but since over half of the prophecies converge on the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ, it advocates His deity and Messiahship. One could hardly read Isaiah 52:13–53:12 or Psalm 22 without recognizing that these are prophetic portraits of Christ on the cross. Others, equally specific, deal with other aspects of His life and ministry.
Still others predict the coming Kingdom to be set up by Christ, in which we as believers will have a part. Having seen so many prophecies literally fulfilled, we can have complete confidence that these others will come to pass as well. “We shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:2-3). JDM
