What Does It Mean to Be Blessed?

Our savior Jesus came to this Earth to die. He was born to die, for me, for you, for everyone. John 15:13 states, "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for his friends."

As I've grown more into my faith I realize that Jesus wants us to be best friends he's pursuing my heart and it is me who always distances myself, cancels, and pushes him off. But Jesus the Son of Man wants to be my friend. This in itself is the foundation of my faith, and my relationship with Christ, and it is such a blessing.

Matthew 5:3-10 highlights the Beatitudes and who is truly blessed on earth.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,     for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn,     for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek,     for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,     for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful,     for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart,     for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers,     for they will be called children of God.  Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,     for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Our world says that those who are rich, powerful, beautiful, etc. are the ones who are blessed. Even those who commit heinous acts are seen as blessed by some because of the money they've obtained through this lifestyle. But that is not what it means to be blessed. Being blessed is the ability to know Jesus. Because it is through knowing him that we know what true joy, love, and fulfillment is. In him, our own selfish ambition decreases and our love for others increases.

That is why I think as a Christian it is imperative that we are activists as well and fight for what we know is just and right. Jesus died so that we would know true justice and peace. That is why it angers me when I see Christians who do not care about politics, global and domestic injustice, the poor etc. Right now the Supreme Court ruled that it is okay for cities to ban homeless people from sleeping outside. Many injustices have crept into our society and I urge us as believers to fight for those most vulnerable in society. To vote, educate ourselves, and act as Jesus would. We must fight for our neighbors who Jesus calls us to love.

I pray that as we move forward we become more aware of what Jesus wants us to do in order to help those around us in love. I pray that you know how blessed you are because Jesus loves you more than you can imagine. Amen

something that i've been struggling to articulate but has been bothering me for a while is how some christians engage and interact with science and what i'm realizing is they have a like... almost love-bombing/discarding relationship with it. and i recognize science isn't a person and that's not literally happening but the christians that i grew up around have this relationship with science where it's real/valid/correct if it supports their side and fake/invalid/wrong if it doesn't. it's this like... engaging with science to get something from it when it can prove their point and condemning it when it doesn't. and this also ties into the belief that you, a layperson with no background in science, are more knowledgeable than actual scientists simply because you have god on your side, and therefore you can use science in whatever way you see fit, which means engaging with it in a way that is ultimately anti-science (but that also doesn't matter because god said it was okay). and it's exhausting engaging with these people for me because it's not that they believe all science bad, it's that they believe most science bad but some science good and they have the authority to determine what is bad and what is good, despite, again, not having a background in science (because what is a "background in science" to an all-knowing god that you have a personal relationship with?). the thing that is so frustrating to me is how these people recognize science is valued and use it to strengthen the validity of their points and to gain credibility while simultaneously refusing to acknowledge the validity of science as a field at all or put in any effort to understand/respect it.

Zosima’s response to Mme Khokhlakova in 2.4 is very heartening and profound. I struggle to articulate my thoughts on it, which also ties into my own interpretation of The Idiot—another thing I struggle to articulate and one of the many things I’ve intended to make a post about without ever quite managing. But I’m going to do my best here.

So as Zosima says, proof is not possible here. There is no way to prove that the God of the Bible exists, or that Jesus the Nazarene was actually raised from the dead, or that there is any continuation of life after death. And I feel that what Zosima is getting at here, which is somewhat surprising in a way, is almost that it doesn’t matter.

Because if those three things are true, then the prescribed way to live is a life of active love—love of God and love of neighbour being the two greatest commandments, right? And Zosima is no ascetic; he shows us that such a life, while involving self-sacrifice for the good of others, is by no means austere or joyless. He jokes and smiles, he is happy, “merry”, he interacts with people rather than sequestering himself. And he is loved and cared for in return. He seems completely fulfilled.

But what if none of those things are true? What if God does not exist and Jesus rotted in that tomb and there is no possibility of life after death? In that case, is not a life of active love toward one’s fellow humans beautiful and meaningful regardless? And perhaps even especially if none of that is true. Because if none of that is true, then a few decades on this earth are all we have. And so would it not be most fulfilling to live them well, to live for the good of something beyond oneself?

Is not striving to demonstrate active love (which I hardly need say does not correlate, or seldom coordinates, with religiosity) the best way to live either way?

If that is true, then the inverse is true: “Whoever loveth knoweth God; for God is love.”

And that leads into my takeaway from The Idiot. (Spoilers ahead). Myshkin is a perfectly beautiful man, or close to it. But he cannot save anyone—not Rogozhin, not Nastasya, not Ippolit or Ivolgin or anyone else. In the end, he cannot save even himself.

But worse still, he seems to often have a negative impact. His presence seems to bring out some of the worst in people. And to that last point, the same is true of Christianity: throughout history, these teachings of love and self-sacrifice have somehow managed to bring out some of the ugliest aspects of humanity and used to justify some of the worst atrocities. And what if, after all that, Jesus stayed dead in the tomb, meaning that he did not save anyone? Not humanity as a whole, not one individual, not even himself? What then?

Is there still something of beauty there? Is there still something worthy of imitation? And is there still something good that comes out of it all (the effect on the child Kolya, perhaps)? These are the questions.

As a final note, this panel from the graphic novel everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too by jomny sun has really stuck with me. Joy and active love in a world that is mysterious and filled with suffering.
