The Christmas lights draped around the porch railings gave everything a soft, golden glow, the kind that made the December night feel warmer than it was. You stood at your doorway, the chill of the air nipping at your cheeks, but it was nothing compared to the nervous energy radiating off Sarah Cameron as she shuffled on the doorstep. She looked too good to be real, her blonde hair glowing under the string lights, and that nervous lip bite of hers wasn’t helping your focus. You leaned casually against the doorframe, trying to seem calm when your heart was flipping like a pancake.

“Hey,” Sarah said, her voice soft but deliberate, like she was testing the water.

“Hey,” you echoed, raising an eyebrow at her. “What’s with the stealth mode? Santa send you to scope out the cookies before the big night?”

She laughed, quiet and breathless, and you couldn’t help but grin at the way her cheeks pinked in the cold. “Not quite,” she said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “Let’s just say I’m avoiding a crowd.”

Your family was inside, the faint sound of Christmas carols mixing with the occasional clatter of dishes as your mom worked on dessert. Out here, though, it was just you and Sarah, her boots scraping softly against the porch like she was trying to shake off her nerves. She looked like she had something to say, but the words weren’t coming easily, and the silence stretched just long enough to make you curious.

“Okay, spill,” you said, tilting your head and crossing your arms. “What’s got you sneaking over here when you’re supposed to be at the Chateau decking the halls or whatever it is Kooks do for Christmas?”

Sarah hesitated, her lips parting, then closing again like she couldn’t decide whether to commit to speaking. Finally, she looked up at you, her blue eyes locking on yours, and your breath caught in your chest at the intensity there. “I needed to talk to you,” she said finally, her voice low and deliberate.

Your brow furrowed, a mix of curiosity and concern creeping in. “About…?”

She took a step closer, her hands shoved deep into the pockets of her jacket like they might betray her nerves. “About how I can’t stop thinking about you,” she blurted, the words coming out in one rushed exhale.

You blinked, your lips parting as her words sank in. “What?”

Sarah groaned, dragging a hand through her hair as if frustrated with herself for blurting it out like that. “I mean, like…” She waved her hand in the air, searching for the right words and failing spectacularly. “I have feelings for you, okay? There. I said it.”

Your heart did a weird little flip, the kind of movement that made you wonder if this was real life or some wild dream. “Sarah Cameron,” you said slowly, your tone teasing but your curiosity very real. “Are you confessing to me on my doorstep on Christmas Eve?”

She groaned again, her hands flying up in a mix of exasperation and embarrassment. “Don’t make this harder than it already is,” she said, but there was a laugh behind her words that softened them. “And yeah, I know it’s messy, okay? I know John B is—ugh.” She broke off, shaking her head. “But I couldn’t go another second without telling you, because you’re—you’re incredible, and I’ve been losing my mind pretending I don’t feel this way.”

“Sarah,” you said gently, stepping closer so you were just a breath away.

Her words faltered, her wide eyes meeting yours, and for a moment, the only sound was the soft hum of music from inside the house.

“You could’ve started with that,” you said softly, a small smile tugging at your lips.

Before you could say anything else, Sarah moved, her hands slipping from her pockets and landing on either side of your face. She pulled you in with a confidence you hadn’t expected, her lips pressing against yours in a kiss that wasn’t just soft—it was fiery, filled with everything she hadn’t said until now.

You melted into her, your hands instinctively finding her waist as she kissed you like she was trying to prove a point. It was electric, all-consuming, and when she deepened the kiss, a soft, satisfied sigh escaped her lips that sent your heart racing. You didn’t know how long it lasted—seconds, minutes, hours—it didn’t matter. The world had narrowed down to just you and Sarah, her hands tangling in your hair, her body pressing against yours like she couldn’t get close enough.

When she finally pulled back, her cheeks were flushed, her lips swollen, and her breathing uneven. Her eyes searched yours, as if trying to gauge your reaction, but all you could do was grin at her, your own lips tingling from the intensity of the kiss.

“Well,” you said breathlessly, still holding onto her waist. “Merry Christmas to me.”

She laughed, the sound bubbling out of her like she couldn’t help it. “You’re ridiculous,” she muttered, but the way her smile softened told you she didn’t mind one bit.

“You’re the one who kissed me like that,” you teased, leaning in just enough so your forehead rested against hers. “Not that I’m complaining.”

Sarah smiled, her eyes fluttering closed for a moment as she let out a soft sigh. “I was scared,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Of what?” you asked gently, brushing a thumb against her cheek.

“Of John B,” she said, pulling back just enough to meet your gaze. “Of what he’d think. Of what everyone would think, honestly.”

Your heart ached at the vulnerability in her voice, and you reached out, taking her hand in yours. “Sarah, if John B can’t handle you being happy, then that’s his problem, not yours.”

She looked up at you, her expression a mix of relief and uncertainty. “You think so?”

“I know so,” you said firmly, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. “Now, are you coming inside, or are we gonna freeze out here all night?”

She laughed again, her smile brighter this time as she pulled you closer. “Fine,” she said, leaning in so her lips brushed your ear. “But only if you promise me more of those milk and cookies later.”
