portrait collection - Astarion

I've been filling my sketchbook with portraits of characters from Baldur's Gate 3 for quite a while. I was pretty busy during the last month, but now I finally had the time to color some of my favorites. I'm pretty happy with the ones I've finished, so I thought I might share them as well.

Here I've Astarion. I find him quite annoying to have around and not as useful as some other companions, but I must admit he's really good looking and always fun to draw, especially his hair 😂

Edit: Please checkout my reblog, I didn’t articulate myself very well in this and come across as a massive dick. Sorry about that, seriously. I am legitimately curious as to the reasons behind the positive Ascended Astarion interpretations/what in the text makes people feel that way.

Okay I read something about this over the weekend and it’s been bothering me since because I feel like people are missing the point.

People were upset it felt like BG3 was forcing you into the role of a victim if you ascended Astarion during your romance. They were insistent they and their character HAPPILY and WILLINGLY ascended him and would be more than happy with him and his behaviour after. Which, don’t get me wrong, can be true.

You can very happily ascend Astarion and give him the power he wanted and support him throughout. It doesn’t stop the fact he’s going to abuse your character and that your character is going to become a victim. Because that’s the point. That’s what the whole deal with the characters are, finding freedom from unhealthy relationships of some kind. Astarion’s specifically touches on the cycle of abuse. Cazador abused Astarion and the other vampire spawn, and maybe Astarion isn’t making you eat rats and locking you in coffins, but he’s still abusing you. He will always have power over you if he ascends and he will never treat you as or respect you as an equal. He will isolate you and ignore your wishes and treat you as an object, because ascending him continues that cycle. He doesn’t respect you if you ascend him.

I’m not faulting anyone that ascends him, it’s not something I would do but that doesn’t mean you’ve done a bad or are “playing wrong.” There’s no wrong way to play the game, especially if they give you the option. I am saying, however, that regardless of how happily someone ascends Astarion and how much they support it they’re still going to become a victim. Even if it’s not right away, it will happen because ascending Astarion continues the cycle of abuse, just in a different form.

I find it amusing that the irritating nature of the BG3 fandom helped thrust me into accepting AA. I was staunchly against the ending (of course, before even getting to act 3) because of what I’d seen online. The think-pieces on how you’d have to be a monster to ascend him, that it’s repeating the cycle of abuse, etc etc etc. Then I came around to the compelling angle of it being a doomed love, that it would end horrifically (for the PC, obviously). Until I saw the incessant hate that seemed to follow the AA-lovers and I decided that I don’t enjoy throwing my lot in with bullies and purists. Now I’m at the point where I think “hmm, fuck it they’re an evil couple” purely because I find the anger it spawns too laughable. The fact that this character creates so much discourse and sheer frustration is honestly pathetic— the inability to let people simply interpret media the way they choose is pathetic.

So thank you to the haters because you introduced me to a very fun sub-community and a compelling character ❤️ I can only hope that one day they simply remember this is a video game.

hello! I know you're requests are closed, but I had to ask - if you prefer "soft Ascended Astarion" do you just ignore the dialouges and interactions that are in the game? I like your writing but I just don't know how you work around that. don't feel obligated to answer since your requests are closed.

As for writing “soft Ascended Astarion”, I don’t ignore the canon it’s just not…applicable to the things I write. Like in the game, it’s all about what path you choose. In most of the things I've written Astarion & Tav/MC are happy together and content as an eternal couple. So, his ‘evil side’ doesn’t apply.

You get the harsher comments when you make direct comments against him or try to leave (which yes is messed up) but my opinion is that Astarion is just saying them out of fear & feelings of rejection. He doesn’t want perhaps the only person he’s ever loved and cared for him to leave, or be alone, so he lashes out. Unfortunately, when Astarion strikes he aims to hurt. So he says terrible things (which again isn’t right) but deep down he doesn’t mean them. He’s hurt and now you have to be hurt too.

That’s just my opinion. Maybe one day I’ll write darker A!Astarion & Tav/MC, should the mood strike, but I much rather write ‘I’d burn this city down just to keep you warm’ feels right now.
