Voyager rewatch s3 ep7: Sacred Ground
This episode is one of the most woo-woo mystical storylines Voyager ever did, but it's not a genre that really works for Star Trek, at least not outside of Deep Space Nine. Plus, it's truly bizarre anti-science stance is honestly baffling for a science fiction show.
I didn't mind this one as a kid, but as an adult, it really doesn't hold up, on any level. First of all, using Kes as a damsel in distress is not my favorite thing. At least it was Captain Janeway who had to rescue her and not a male character, but still, if they needed a character Janeway would feel protective and motherly toward to go rescue, it could as easily have been Harry Kim. But a storyline where no one had to be the sleeping beauty damsel would have been better.
But the biggest problem I had with this episode was that this script felt like it was preaching to us to cast aside our foolish godless atheist belief in science and embrace blind belief in a mystical higher power that knows what's good for us. Which is gross in general, but doubly gross to say to Star Trek fans. For one thing, the assumption that you can't believe in science and believe in any kind of god is weird and totally wrong, and the assumption that seeking to understand something will ruin it's magic or whatever, is bizarrely backward, and literally the exact same reasoning that theocracies use to maintain their stranglehold on power.
This episode was obsessed with the idea that it's desperately important for everyone to have 'blind faith', but unquestioning loyalty to any religious doctrine is the anathema to the cooperative future that Star Trek imagines. Any idea that's set above question, beyond the reach of empirical evidence, is ripe for any charismatic, unscrupulous person to twist for their own gain and use to divide and conquer. Science, meanwhile, is not a belief system, and it's not comparable to a religion, in that science still exists, whether you believe in it or not. Science is simply observation of the world around us, and it's always struck me as odd when some religious people take offense to that. If you believe a god created the world, aren't you honoring your god by learning about their creation? Anyone who forbids or discourages learning is always trying to maintain power over others. Romanticising ignorance or blind faith, and ridiculing those who seek to learn and understand the truth is always ill-intentioned, ALWAYS. This episode natters on about how Janeway supposedly needs to find some faith, but when she expressed her absolute confidence in her ability to find a scientific explanation for everything, she was expressing faith, in her own way, but still, the supposed 'ancestral spirits' in this episode mock her, and disdain the faith she already has, just because it isn't faith in them, and their power. This story fell apart, right there.
These 'spirits' are obviously not benevolent if they'll only help people who worship them blindly, and the people on the planet absolutely were assholes to not let the Voyager crew just scan the energy field in the first place. If saving an innocent person's life would 'offend the spirits', then your spirits are assholes, dude! They don't deserve anybody's worship, considering they're happy to let someone almost die, and her whole crew worry about her, just to teach some passing strangers a lesson about how blind faith in them is the only way- and it wasn't! Science literally would have fixed it immediately! Once again, this script hurts itself in it's confusion!
I did think the part about the trials in the ritual being whatever the individual person invented for themselves was an interesting concept, since a lot of times, people do believe that they have to suffer to gain something they seek, and put themselves through needless torment. That was a much more interesting concept to explore, especially for Janeway, but it was steamrolled by the constant, condescending, holier-than-thou crap in the rest of the episode.
Having Janeway be sad she found out the scientific explanation at the end was the most ridiculous, out of character nonsense I can think of. Even if she'd have said she was glad to know, but didn't really need to this time, that would have been fine, but to have her literally be like 'boo, finding out how it works ruined the magic!!!' was the dumbest thing ever, and no scientist would think that, ever. Does the writer of this ep really have such lack of poetry in their soul that finding out the science behind a rainbow makes the rainbow less beautiful and miraculous to them? Because that's what I'm sensing from this godawful script.
There was some nice dramatic lighting, and the temple design was atmospheric, but that's about all I can say in this ep's favor.
Tl;dr: A truly bad faith take on the nature of both science and faith, that manages to be offensive toward both concepts. It wanted very hard to be deep, but it felt more like an evangelical sermon than a Star Trek episode.

so, i'm rewatching star wars, like marathoning through it...... and i gotta say............. i hate tlj more and more every time i watch this saga. and i finally put ideas around why i hate it. it's just so clear that rian johnson didn't want to make this movie. he wanted to make a star wars movie, suuuure, a star wars movie of the likes of the acolyte verse in terms of exploration of lore, expansion of possibilities, new nuances to the story, etc. but not star wars, as in the skywalker saga, as in, the middle piece of a new trilogy. there are interesting concepts explored in the movie, interesting ideas being arisen, interesting questions being asked. buuuuuuut, it takes episode 7 and goes "welp let's erase all of that!" and throws it in the trash, thus successfully destroying the new trilogy before it even had a chance to stand on its own. beyond that, and even more unnerving, it takes the entirety of the skywalker saga, ep1 through 6 and goes "welp let's erase all of that!" and more, "i can do better". NO YOU CAN'T! you just can't. because rian johnson never understood the point of the star wars story. it's just so obvious! i still 100% believe luke would never turn the way he does on episode 8. like, sure, it could've happened, a what if, a parallel universe where he gives up on vader or whatever, but this luke??? luke from the return of the sith? luke from the books? luke from the comics? luke from just anything star wars that has been created??? no. never. no. jamais. non! it doesn't even have anything to do with the force or being a jedi or whatever, it's also about leia, about han, luke would never abandon them, luke would never give up when it comes to them. i'm not saying luke wouldn't make mistakes with ben, or whatever. i'm talking about who luke is at his core, about the values of family, loyalty, faith, he's always uphold during ALL the other movies or medias in which he appeared. in this context, tlj luke just doesn't make sense. it's a luke. it's not the luke. he's an interesting concept, of a jedi abandoning the ways of the jedi, questioning them, etc etc. but it doesn't suit luke. for starters, because luke never upheld the jedi beliefs 100%, far from it. and even the characters from the new saga aren't themselves! leia isn't herself (for the little she's used). then you have iconic characters like 3po, chewie, r2 that are completely sidelined: even that, is against everything this saga has stood for. these characters are part of the team, the family, you can't build a story by sidelining them completely. all chewie does is sit by the falcon and try and eat these stupid furry pets: a reminder, HIS BEST FRIEND JUST DIED! he's right next to luke, whom he's fought wars with, loves, and is loyal to. do we even have an interraction between luke and chewie????????? 🙃 finn literally spends the entirety of ep7 learning to belong, and then he wants to leave again?????? poe is... just, not poe. like, no. there's just nothing to say about these characters cuz they're just not the characters set up in episode 7, and how do you do that? how do you take on the mantle of the middle piece of A TRILOGY and just decide to shit on what came before????? and just leave no room for whatever could come next????????????? but oh noooo, rian johnson is too busy making stylish, pompish bullshit about the force and rey-not-rey-because-ooc doing weird shit and force exploration and pretty battle on a planet that makes stylish shots, let's just ignore how he treats the characters, i meaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. 😐 anyway, I (STILL) HATE TLJ.
#star wars#anti the last jedi#anti tlj#anti rian johnson#and i fault this episode for everything wrong with ep9#which is why i cut it some slack#because how do you pick up from the shit rian left?????????#it's not even a cohesive story with the rest!!!!!!!!!!!#IM SCREAMING#oh and btw#NONE of the concepts explored in tlj are worth what they're doing to the characters#far from it#newsflash tlj is THE WORST skywalker saga movie ever made#because it's not a movie about the characters from the skywalker saga#IT'S BULLSHIT#they should've given him an acolyte type tv show to be prideful about#and leave OTHER PEOPLE make this trilogy#normal people#with their head outside of their butt

Can I say as an aroace that I need more arospec and acespec representation. And I found Star Trek. So here are my arospec and acespec headcanons!
Jim is demiromantic or quoiromantic- 1. Because I say so and 2. People say he falls in love too easily but what he portrays on screen is more sexual attraction and platonic attraction combined with some of those good ol' ethics that make him help the person
Spock is greysexual or demisexual- Just because of both S1 Ep7 "Mudd's Women", S2 Ep 8 "I, Mudd," and S2 Ep14 "Wolf in the Fold," where he shows no sign of any sexual attraction to anyone! I'm also open to asexual Spock but I think that Jim is the exception for him
Bones is demisexual- Look, this may conflict with my previous idea of him and Jim having a casual thing (sex) in the Academy but I consulted my demisexual friend @tophatcat459 and she said that if they had a close enough bond them maybe he would. So I know that demisexuality needs a strong bond to experience sexual attraction and for most it's a strong romantic attraction but maybe Bones is different? Also he has a crush on Jim in the Academy so that could help?
Scotty is Asexual- It's simple, he cares too much about engines to care about sex
Sulu is Asexual- He goes to a planet where anything he wants can he realised, where people get love interests and he gets a gun. That's a mood so he's ace.
Chekov is Aromantic- Simon Pegg said in an interview when he was writing Beyond (I think) that Chekov is just horny, so he's aro
Uhura and Christine are both allo but they're very understanding
Also amatronormativity is no longer a thing and most of the crew who are friends hug and cuddle and have platonic intimacy with no one asking if they're a couple okay?
As you can see this is just my own needs projected onto Star Trek so I hope you enjoyed this look into my brain!

maxwelljenkins8 - One of the greatest joys of season 2 was getting to know and work with these beautiful 4-legged actors (all of us 2-legged folks would agree) Sharing the screen with horses required the work and care of so many remarkable people. I am beyond grateful that they shared their knowledge and time so generously with me. What some of you may not know is that “Gypsy” was played by 3 different horses. I mainly worked with the Star- Tanto (who I rode and who has a resume that puts mine to shame!) I also worked with Gus who stole the scenes and our hearts in Ep7 (No spoilers here😜)

Voyager rewatch s2 ep7: Parturition
Another episode where I thought 'oh no!' when I realized which one it was. Honestly this ep feels more like an episode of Saved By the Bell than Star Trek, but I guess they can't all be good.
In this one, Slater Tom Paris develops a crush on Kelly Kes and Zack Neelix is, like, totally jealous, and the two boys get into a fight at The Max the mess hall. But then Mr. Belding Captain Janeway assigns them as lab partners on an away mission together, and tells them they better work out their differences so they can get a good grade have a succesful away mission. While working on their school project the away mission, they find an abandoned puppy baby space dinosaur, and the two boys bond while caring for the adorable puppy baby space dinosaur. Slater Tom realizes that Zack Neelix is the one Kelly Kes really loves, and that he respects his friend too much to steal his girl. They end up best buds again, and they get an A on their science project!! get back to Voyager alive!! They high five at the end! Neelix offers Tom some of his special bird gland juice as a mark of his esteem!
They really did a teen sitcom plot as an actual Star Trek episode.
And they expected it to resolve a serious story arc, no less! And the relationship it was supposed to fix wasn't even that of the main characters in the episode! Choices were certainly made here, but they were bad ones.
For starters, I hate how Kes is being passed around to nearly every male character on the show to be his lust object du jour. That would be bad enough if she were older, but considering both the character and the actress are the youngest of all the characters/actors, it's extra gross and infuriating. And with all this time devoted to these dumb high-school romantic shenanigans, she spends most of her screen time crying over how much they've hurt her, while also placating their feelings. It's really sexist, and I just don't know why the writers wasted so much time going down this road.
I could barely believe my ears with the gross misogynist dialog in this episode. The Doctor telling Kes she should be flattered to have two guys fighting over her?! Are you kidding me?? Tom saying he'll never try anything with Kes because he respects Neelix?! Um, no?! The line should be because he respects KES, because she chose Neelix! This dudebro attitude that women are just commodities to divvy up between themselves is not something that Star Trek should be espousing, ever. It was already a backward attitude in the 90s when the show was made, and it's way beyond offensive for now, let alone the 24th century. And then Tom asks Neelix's permission to be friends with Kes(!!) and I want to gag some more- because even when Neelix says (as he should) that he doesn't choose Kes's friends for her, it rings hollow, because he's already gone on jealous tirades forbidding her to see people before.
I think it was actually really disingenuous to write Tom as being in love with Kes, since it's clearly an attempt to justify and downplay the seriousness of Neelix's appalling behavior. Constantly spying on your significant other, accusing them of cheating with everyone they talk to, telling them you don't want them to see certain people, picking fights with their friends in an attempt to drive them away, all of which Neelix does, over and over- these are all forms of emotional abuse, which is never justified. That this is being presented as normal relationship behavior on any show, let alone one that's supposed to be progressive, is insane. How anyone can watch this stuff and think it's cute or funny rather than horrifying is totally beyond me.
The worst part of it all was the utter lack of awareness that this episode should not have been about Tom at all, it should have been about Kes. Neelix's problem was never with Tom, he was just a convenient excuse. Having Tom assure him he's not a threat would never change Neelix's behavior, because Neelix invents new excuses every day- he's already accused Kes of cheating with at least four other people- even if he accepted Tom's word, he'd just move on to another scapegoat because the underlying problem is still there. Neelix's problem was always his own insecurity and possessiveness, and Tom was not the person Neelix needed to square things away with, Kes is. She's the one recieving the brunt of Neelix's anger and suspicion every day, she's the one who deserved to confront him, she's the one who deserved an acknowlegement from him that he is in the wrong, and that he believes her. Having Neelix acknowledge that he believes another man's word doesn't do anything to change the fact that he still doesn't believe his own girlfriend's word. Their relationship can never be fixed if he trusts some random guy he works with more than he trusts her.
If this episode was supposed to redeem Neelix or Tom, it failed miserably, because all it does is show that they're both super misogynists who think of women as objects, don't respect women's choices, or believe what women say. And that sucks, honestly. Both of them have good qualities that would have made them perfectly likeable characters, but then the writers bog them down in this. Why? A lot of the stuff Tom said in that scene was actually good stuff that would have marked a nice turning point for his charcter in nearly any other episode, with any other storyline, but no, it has to be spoiled by this macho nonsense. Siiigh.
Everything in this episode was a disappointment- the baby dinosaur, though well made and sophisticated for it's day, just looked silly and like a doll. Even Captain Janeway's hair wasn't cute this time- my beloved Gibson Girl bun hair, we hardly knew ye! Chopped off and given blonde highlights far too soon! (Please just let Kate Mulgrew stay auburn, is that so much to ask?)
The only good joke in this was when the Doctor said that Kes usually likes when he talks about autopsies- make a story about that! Show Kes being a weirdo little freak who wants to dissect dead stuff, have her decide she wants to go to medical school someday! Just give her some plot that doesn't revolve around a man, and stop making her a prize to be won in some man's story, I'm begging.
Tl;dr: Some of the most insanely sexist crap I've ever seen in a Star Trek episode, it didn't earn the resolution it was trying for at all, because it fundamentally misunderstands how both storytelling and interpersonal relationships work.

I’m collecting my fanworks into master-posts for my own need to be stupidly organised! For your viewing pleasure, here are direct links to my gifs thus far.
This post is now discontinued! Leaving for posterity, but from here on out please see these links for the current masterposts this one has transformed into (02/2021):
Gifset Masterpost: The Umbrella Academy Gifset Masterpost: TUA Cast+
I accept prompts, if I have the time, as long as they’re TUA or cast related in some way. I make them as HQ as the source will allow, within the size restrictions of tumblr. I work with Adobe Photoshop and do my own editing. I put a lot of work and effort into these - please do not repost without credit!
Note; ‘Art set’ is defined as gifs/set that are edited beyond the conventional cut and colour, so to speak. Including but not limited to: special animations, effects, timing sequences, blending, texturing, etc. are found in anything labelled ‘Art set’.
