The Evil Dead (1981)
"Why have you disturbed our sleep, awakened us from our ancient slumber? You will die! Like the others before you, one by one, we will take you."
#the evil dead#1981#horror imagery#eye horror#gore tw#sam raimi#bruce campbell#ellen sandweiss#betsy baker#richard demanincor#theresa tilly#tom sullivan#joseph loduca#rob tapert#ted raimi#american cinema#video nasty#evil deadology#horror film#thus spake the people. evil dead won my poll on which horror franchise to work through next‚ and somehow this was the one that I'd not seen#a single second of; the entire trilogy (and various follow ups) passed me by. i still felt like i was coming into this knowing it beat for#beat because of the inevitable cultural osmosis you get when a film is this influential and this popular; i knew the plot‚ i knew Ash‚ i#knew what to expect. what i didn't expect was quite how good this was. received wisdom had it that this was the rough first indie film that#was followed by better‚ more polished instalments but i have to say‚ taken on its own merits‚ this is a hell of an achievement#it's immediately apparent both that this isn't just another DIY splatter nasty made to cash in‚ and that right from the get go Raimi was a#highly creative and fiercely original talent. there's no reason‚ if making a cheapy gore film‚ for Raimi to be shooting from behind the#swinging pendulum of a grandfather clock‚ or to include genuinely sweet character moments like Ash and Linda playing a cute game of#avoiding glances whilst he gives her the pendant (and so wonderfully and so darkly inverted later‚ as her demonic form plays the same game#whilst he digs her grave). seriously messed up fx in places‚ very real sense of dread‚ absolutely phenomenal sound design#sometimes the classics are classics for a reason. an absolute masterclass in indie shock horror and a massively fun time

THE EVIL DEAD (1981)
Tumblr media
An older movie where, by golly, they do the damn thing. Reminds me a bit of Night of the Living Dead 1968 because they just really went for it even with what little abilities they might have had way back when to make a truly sickening Evil Dead movie. The makeup and effects were gnarly in the best way, I can see why this movie has such a cult following and why there are so many sequels and spin-offs with better and gnarlier effects.
⭐⭐⭐.5
Trigger Warning Sexual Assault (?)
Tumblr media
A group of young adults get together in a Cabin in the Woods to have a grand old time drinking and eating salad (they brought salad to eat, what party animals). The fruit cellar door slams open so the boys decide why not poke around down there! They grab some spooky stuff and bring it back up to their cool salad party. They play a creepy tape they found that has some Latin (I believe) being recited over and over like some sort of ritual! The girls just want it to stop, which it does, abruptly, when a branch from a nearby tree breaks a window (not ominous at all).
Tumblr media
Cheryl goes off into the woods to get strung up by the trees and then possessed by whatever demon(s) they let loose which really bites them all in the butt when they get back to the cabin. They lock her in the cellar but not before she causes havoc. Poor Shelly doesn’t have a cellar so when she gets possessed she gets thrown in the fire and then hacked to pieces but at least the boys have the respect to say “let’s bury her, right here, right now.”
Tumblr media
Things aren’t going very well back in the cabin though, Linda, the girl that got stabbed, is now possessed too. Scott is ready to bail, he says screw the women and takes off into the woods only to get assaulted by the trees like Cheryl but this time it is much more deadly because he is puking up blood and dies soon after. Linda cannot stop giggling and this is the part of the movie where everything sort of devolves into screaming and snickering and bloodshed. Ash is able to stop Linda, who was his lady love before she turned, he beheads her with a shovel and she still was laughing.
Tumblr media
By the time Ash makes it back inside Cheryl has escaped the cellar and Scott has turned, Ash keeps asking why he is being put through this hell but no one answers him. Finally Ash figures out he needs to burn the book with all the evil incantations in it and that will make all the Evil Dead go away. After a bloody battle Ashley is able to get the book in the fire and stop the madness for a moment, before the villains explode with giant hands in them (yeah, I don’t know what to tell you folks). Ash gets out but not before the creeping thing that's been around all movie sneaks up behind him and… Credits.
Tumblr media
The movie is a bloody mess and I mean that in the most sincere way. Blood, bones, and puss (the puss was the worst for me, yuck) plus the possessed makeup on our Evil Dead coupled with all the prosthetics that got chopped off of each one of them, this was a fun movie. I look forward to seeing what they do with the sequels as there is quite a bit to work with just from this first movie alone.
