I shouldn't have gone on the tvtropes page for The Queen's Gambit because they have one for the Netflix series but not the book. And like, I get that stuff has to change for adaptation, but I really don't understand why some of the changes they've listed happened.
#like the tvtropes page says Beth's mom committed suicide in the show? nah man she died in a car accident#also Beth closing her eyes for 'several seconds' in her final match is an understatement#in the book she closed her eyes and meditated on the game for A FULL HOUR#also the show apparently has some model named Cleo? I don't remember her being in the book#she appears to be here as like an additional Jolene because she's filling the ship tease role Jolene has in the book#the narration makes it clear Beth loves Jolene and there's more than a few hints that that love is romantic in nature

I gotta know, do you have a canon manor game? And if so, who was in it and how did it go?
- cw in advance for description of injury and death (it’s not very specific but just in case, y’know?)
—
"My first match? It was uh.. fine, I guess. I wouldn’t be able to tell you for sure, I don’t exactly remember the last minutes of it. I guess I can explain what I do remember though. It was a match with a certain Baker, Tailor, Mechanical Designer and Mercenary. Figuring out how to use my ability was fun, running and stabbing was something I was already used to, but being granted an additional speed and strength made it better."
"There was just one… issue. I assumed the only complication would be those terrible headaches. The headaches were already getting me riled up, and that idiotic mercenary was making things worse. It felt practically impossible to get him down, it was frustrating! It didn’t help that I was starting to get down to one cipher with all the survivors still alive and well. In an attempt of trying to turn this around in my favor, I began to use my ability more and more."
"Half of the match became a blur by then. All I saw were useless prey that needed to be cut down. Once I finally came back to my senses, I was standing over who I assumed was the mercenary. It was hard to tell with the multiple stab wounds covering his body. The other pests had already been sent back to the manor, luckily for them, it was by chair. Poor, poor mercenary~"
"I gutted that damn pig and sent him back with my own hands. I don’t remember doing it, but I can remember the feeling. I hadn’t felt like that since my last adventure with the coward who called herself my friend. It felt great. Although, when I returned from my match, it seemed some of my fellow hunters didn’t share the same feeling. Some even had the plain audacity to look at me with such disgust. The looks on their face were pathetic. The host of these games was even worse to deal with. I was punished for "breaking the natural order" of these games. Can you believe that? I was punished for losing control over an ability that they gave me. If anything, they should’ve been thankful I brought a new outcome to their stupid little game."
"Ugh. Now I’m not allowed to use my ability that much during matches. Something about the manor owner refusing for me to get that "wild" mid-match. I don’t understand why I can’t just put the survivors’ out of their misery my own damn self, but there isn’t much I can do about it now."
#rip to angel beth and bianca#you guys didn’t exactly die unscathed but#at least you didn’t go out like poor merc 😔#Cleo really pulled a 28 stab wounds on merc /ref#anyways thanks for letting me borrow your OCs gamers <3#sorry they had to endure many many many stab wounds#ask-idv-thrillseeker#idv oc#idv#idv hunter oc#idv hunter blog#idv ask blog#idv rp blog#mentions: angel || tailor#mentions: beth || baker#mentions: bianca || mechanical designer#mentions: naib || mercenary#long post#anon ask!#text reply#🔪 || cleo answers

@virtuousouls || Cleo & Lo'ak
.。.:*☆ Cleo loved being at the aquarium. Sure, it was not the same as watching the fishes while swimming with them under the sea, but she still liked spending time there. Plus, no risk of her getting accidentally wet and therefore someone discovering she was a mermaid.
"It is really a pity they do not have dolphins here, right?" She mused, glancing at some others nearby. Cleo could sometimes be a dork, really. And clumsy, too.
Which only proofed in the moment Cleo turned when no one was answering, slippin on a slippy spot on the floor and landing on her ass as a result.

Bit of a niche question, how would noble children be socialised with their peers rather than servants and retainers? Bran of course knows the Cerwyn heir very well who is half a day away and has family at Winterfel besides and Catelyn wonders if Jeyne used to be playmates with the squires from Casterly Rock who were murdered. I assume that noble children would occasionally be brought along to big occasions but would there be less incidental ways to bind the next generation early?
The first and likely most common way is probably exactly what you mention - visits between aristocratic families. You mention the Cerwyns visiting with the Starks relatively frequently, given the physical closeness of Castle Cerwyn to Winterfell, but it’s also worth noting that Halman and Benfred Tallhart did the same, as Bran remembers during that same event. Likewise, Arya recalls visiting White Harbor twice with Lord Eddard , while Catelyn recalls visiting the Twins as a girl; neither mentions specifically meeting, say, Wylla and Wynafryd or the many children and grandchildren Walder was already accumulating even in Catelyn’s youth, but I think it would have been virtually impossible for the aristocratic in each such instance not to have met and interacted with each other. These visits not only would give the adults the chance to talk business and renew bonds of fealty or alliance, but also potentially lay the groundwork for future dynastic pairings or continuations of such alliances between their children; in turn, interactions between these children might often be in such situations specifically targeted or formalized as much as they were personal (think of, say, young Alys Karstark being paired in dances with Robb Stark, or Joffrey and Tommen practicing in the yard with Robb and Bran).
(Which is not to say these interactions would always be positive - think of, say, Sam’s visit to the Arbor in his youth, and his cruel treatment by the Redwyne twins.)
Fostering, too, provides a very natural (by Westerosi standards) means for aristocratic children to socialize with peers outside of their immediate families. The examples of fostering throughout the series (and the history of Westeros) are too numerous to list for the purposes of this ask, but it’s worth noting as a very general point that fostered children are raised as virtual siblings with the children of the household in which they stay. While it’s certainly possible for fostered children to be relatives of the families with whom they are fostered, the dynastic distinction between these children allows for early lessons in how to identify, address, and interact with members of other families, not to mention how to (potentially) build friendships - think of, say, Robert and Ned in the Eyrie, or the pro-greenlands King Harmund II Hoare. (Which, again, is far from a guarantee - think of Jaime’s linger criticism of his fellow page and squire at Crakehall, Merrett Frey.)
Nor is fostering necessarily the only way for members, specifically children, of different Westerosi aristocratic families to find themselves in or around other households. Jeyne Poole and Beth Cassel were (and are) not very high-ranking aristocrats, certainly not equal to the Starks in terms of position, but as the scions of (I think) hereditary aristocratic officer families of Winterfell, Beth and especially Jeyne were seen as entirely suitable companions to the Starks, specifically Sansa. Too, if we take, say, Casterly Rock as an example, we can see a household of mixed aristocratic families (and, by extension, children): Kevan’s sons and daughter would have grown up not just with their cousin Tyrek Lannister, but also (thanks to Genna’s refusal to live away from Casterly Rock) some of their Frey cousins, “Red” Walder Frey and the grandsons of Cleos Frey - all descendants of Tytos Lannister, but from distinct branches (and, for the Freys, distinct paternal dynasties), which would strengthen those establish bonds.
Too, while not typical, it is nevertheless possible to have children brought into the household of a royal court. Magraery’s household as queen, for example, has included not just adult aristocratic Reach women but also younger girls from her homeland: not only her extended Tyrell cousins Megga, Elinor, and Alla but also little Alysanne Bulwer, children who may never have interacted with one another in their ordinary upbringings but would now have the opportunity to do so. Likewise, King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne took into their household their half-sister Jocelyn Baratheon when she was only six years old, to be raised as essentially an extra child of the royal couple within the household at King’s Landing (though of course the extent to which F&B, and by extension GRRM, ignores Jocelyn as a character never ceases to make me mad).
These are all examples rather than a finite list, of course, and it’s probably also worth noting that from an early age, aristocratic Westerosi children are prepared, through work and play, to recognize and interact with their social equals and superiors. We see from the experience of the Stark children that the study of heraldry is a key part of their education, setting them up early to recognize other families by their dynastic sigils. Too, one of aristocratic Westeros’ familiar childhood games is “come-into-my-castle”, a game which Tyrion remembers is “meant to teach [highborn children] courtesy, heraldry, and a thing or two about their lord father's friends and foes”. So from the first, highbor Westerosi children are socialized to interact with the wider (blue-blood) world around them.
Of course, it me, so I have to mention what this ask immediately made me think of from The Royal Succession, book four of The Accursed Kings:
The most surprising aspect of this dinner was the number of children present; for Eudes of Burgundy, having made it a condition of his own attendance that his niece, Jeanne of Navarre, should be present as some reparation for the outrage done her at the Assembly, the Count of Poitiers had decided to bring his three girls, the Count of Valois his latest offspring by his third marriage, the Count of Evreux his son and daughter, who were still of an age to play with dolls, the Dauphin of Viennois his little Guigues, the betrothed of the Regent’s third daughter, and the Duke of Burgundy his three children. There was continual confusion over Christian names; Blanches, Isabelles, Charleses and Philippes abounded; when someone cried ‘Jeanne!’ six heads turned together.

you look... good.
you changed your hair.
when i needed you most, you were gone.
i was a lousy partner.
Pronouns: He/Him/His, Male!Reader
A million things ran through Beth's mind as she furiously tried lighting her cigarette but the damn flame refused to flicker for longer than a second. Her mother, Benny Watts, Harry, Cleo, Bargov, Bargov, Bargov, they all consumed her every waking moment. Her hangover thumped violently in her head, the consequences of spending the whole day drinking whatever she could get her hands on the day prior, yet another thing distracting her. She wanted to scream. She wanted to cry. She wanted to break the damn lighter and-
"Beth?" The flame flickered, lighting her cigarette as a new voice sent a chill down her spine. Familiar, oh so familiar. A voice she so often thought about, dreamt about even. Her arms dropped to her side, pulling the cigarette along as she shakily exhaled a cloud of smoke into the crisp morning air. Her tongue swiped over her lips and she turned to face him. He was no longer a boy. He was a young man now.
"(Y/N)." She greeted, her eyes dropping to scan his figure. He wore a cozy-looking long-sleeved sweater and his coat draped over his arm. He looked grown, obliviously, but it startled how mature he appeared. No longer the sly jock who smoked with her behind the school and listened to her explain chess without teasing her or trying to change her. Her former second biggest fan - her first biggest fan would always be Alma, her beautiful complicated adoptive mother -, her first kiss, her first time, her first heartbreak. "You look... good." She hadn't intended for it to come out so bitter.
"You changed your hair." (Y/N) smiled, that damned smile that'd made her heart skip a beat when she'd first seen it directed at her in the hallway at school. His gaze lifted to her red locks, mostly blocked by the beanie she wore. She'd barely brushed it that morning, only raked her fingers through it and when it refused to comply she'd opted for covering it. "It suits you, Beth. It's- It's good seeing you."
She looked a mess, she realized, and bit her tongue. Beth smiled, forcibly and awkwardly, and took another drag from her cigarette to ease her jittering nerves. Not even Benny Watts had that sort of effect on her, even with his fluffy hair and cheeky smile. "I didn't think you'd still live around here. You said you wanted to leave this place and never come back."
"I did leave. For college, I mean. I came back after graduating." He explained with a casual shrug. Of course, he had his life together. Beth hummed absentmindedly and nodded, rolling the cigarette between her index and middle fingers as she tried shoving down all the 'what ifs' desperately trying to rise. "I hear you've made quite the name for yourself, Beth. I'm happy for you."
"You weren't so happy when I had to attend tournaments." The words tumbled out quickly, far too fast for her to shut her mouth before she got the sentence out. (Y/N)'s smile faltered slightly and he chuckled dryly, something that made her wince. But all the inconveniences that'd piled up had put her in too of a bad mood to even think about apologizing.
"Yeah, it doesn't help you chose a tournament over being here when my father passed, Beth. When I needed you most, you were gone. I think most people would be upset over that, don't you?" Beth pressed her lips together and she nodded, her gaze dropping down onto the pavement beneath her feet.
"Yeah, I... I was a lousy partner." She admitted quietly. "I didn't mean to... I didn't mean to hurt you, (Y/N). Really. I- I just-"
"It's fine, Beth. It's in the past. We were kids. I never thought we'd end up as high school sweethearts, anyway." It stung to hear, especially when Alma had teased her about him being 'the one'. She nodded, forcing another tight-lipped smile in feigned agreeance and taking a long drag from her cigarette before dropping it on the floor and stepping on the end. She exhaled the smoke and motioned toward the building.
"Are you here for someone?" For her?
"Yeah, actually, my..." He paused. "My, uhm, my fiancée's nephew is actually competing today. She's out of town so she asked me to, uhm... show some support, I guess."
Fiancée. God, it'd felt like she'd been sucker-punched. "Oh." She simply blurted out in response, her mouth refusing to form any other words. (Y/N) nodded, releasing a breathy laugh as if her world hadn't suddenly turned on its axis. There'd always been a part of her that believed they'd find each other again, that he'd attend a tournament and they'd catch up only to begin their romance all over again.
"I could... I could see about getting you an invitation if you'd like? It'd be... nice to have you there, Beth."
"Yeah, of course, I'm... I'm happy for you." What a lie.

“Don’t get used to it.”
After dropping the baker, the woman backed away, arms folded. The further she was, the more likely she could resist the temptation to pick Beth back up and place her in the chair. “I’m only sparing you to make up for that time when we first met and you offered me baked goods.” It was a rare occurrence for Cleo to spare someone, an experience that didn’t come around often.
“This way I can say I’ve properly re-payed you by letting you go. In future matches, get ready to be chaired like the others.” With a tilt of her head, she nodded towards the open dungeon.
“You better get going before I change my mind, dear.”
÷ : [sender] carrying [receiver] to dungeon ~ @ask-idv-thrillseeker
"E-Eh..? Y-You're.. sparing me..?"
Beth was both confused and slightly dazed as she was being carried, albeit slightly haphazardly, to the nearby dungeon.
When a few minutes earlier she had used her baked goods to try and buy her some time to get to the last person who was chaired before the mangled effect that was inflected on her took it's toll. While Beth had managed to get there before mangled took her out, so did Cleo from vaulting over a nearby pallet that was downed from a previous kite and she terrorshocked Beth. As Beth was being picked up, she could faintly make out the shouts of the chaired survivor calling to bring her back before they eventually turned into the shouts of a rocket chair blasting off.
Now she's just being dropped off at the dungeon after what felt like forever of being carried.
