Thinking of the Nie disciple that told Nie Mingjue it was Meng Yao who stayed behind to clean up corpses on the battlefield today.

Nie Mingjue didn't just randomly stumble upon poor lil meowyao eating bread in the novel, he was already looking for him to thank and reward him for his work.

That's what makes it so fun that nieyao's first conflict will end up being about someone else taking credit for Meng Yao's work.

And I'm sure that Nie Mingjue's actual opinions on plagiarism are a lot more nuanced, all we really get from him in this scene is "well you shouldn't kill someone over it!" which leaves a lot of room for what punishments he thinks are appropiate. But I bet that it isn't occuring to him in this moment that the only reason he knows Meng Yao at all, the only reason he got such a capable deputy, is that he noticed someone was taking care of the dead and cared enough to want to know their name. And then the Nie disciples didn't lie to him. The disciple he asked could have said "it was me, Zongzhu" to rise in the ranks himself, but he didn't. He went and asked others, who all also could have taken the credit, but they didn't. Someone saw Meng Yao working and decided to be honest about it and that simple decision is the catalyst for Meng Yao becoming Nie Mingjue's deputy.

Meng Yao can't just work hard to get results, others have to acknowledge that work. If they don't, it's as if he didn't do anything at all.

I love every "Death set Dream up with Hob on purpose" headcanon, and I love "actually I was planning to throw Chaucer at you but I can wing it pretty damn well and, once I heard Hob call me stupid, I knew, yeah that's going to be Dream's boyfriend". It takes a village (or an older sister) to get Dream a boyfriend.

Destiny, out loud: it was an unlikely path in my book, so I didn't give it much attention 
Destiny, in his head: honestly I started speed-reading/skimming through Dream's love life paragraphs because watching him crash and burn and cause massive body counts just seemed so... repetitive and predictable?

Death: knowing our brother, I was carefully managing my expectations and was just glad he was still doing the century meetups last time I'd checked. Good for him, managing to stay with somebody for a century, that outstrips his last relationship by ... like 7 decades.  Kind of offended I wasn't invited to this wedding, kind of not planning to say anything?

Desire: At this point, I stick my fingers in my ears and go "lalalalalala" whenever I hear anything about Dream and want, either him wanting or somebody wanting him, because Death said I had to stop making fun of him for how disproportionate his Yearn to Act Ratio was, and any ammunition I can't use is just ... irritating. I figured if anything really changed, my twin would tell me about his descent into misery.

Despair: He was less miserable, but I assumed it was a fluke and he'd return to his normal equilibrium eventually. And it's not like my twin let me know he'd managed to successfully want AND obtain something?

And Delirium had more important things to think about than her brother's sad love life, like would flying fish fired out of confetti cannons be considered birds until they landed?

Meanwhile all denizens of the Dreaming are never not aware that Dream is happily married, because the weather has been perfect for years and the throne room stained glass is some variation of Hob and Dream being lovey-dovey.

Chapter 11 of Incendiary is COMPLETE at 11,180 WORDS. breaking the record as the longest chapter in the entire story. I will be posting this chapter tomorrow (Sunday, 10/27) at 2 PM CST!

I haven't updated this story since March of this year and only a few days ago did I get the itch again to write some more of this story. I'm back in the saddle for this one, and will ride the wave as it lasts. This chapter was a bitch and a half to write, there's a lot of Pyro backstory, and a LOT of angst. BUT... it is probably my favorite by far.

Six Some Sentence Sunday Monday

Since the poll was in favour of the sylki con artists AU, here's a bit of that which I already had written. I am starting to suspect the reason AUs are so often multichapter things is that you have to do new backstory and that takes a number of words to achieve. In this one I have - oh no! - made the brodisons poor!

This bit's from the second chapter, when the alternating POV falls upon AU!Loki and thus I can/have to start explaining the background to his role in this Alternate Universe - Modern Setting:

It’s not like he hasn’t tried to venture into a more socially (and legally) acceptable line of work, but unfortunately he seems to have inherited their father’s business acumen, the reverse Midas touch that lost the family a fortune before either boy had made it as far as sitting their GCSEs. (Several fortunes, actually, depending how you count it.) Some of the effects of that financially comfortable childhood have stuck, however, and this includes a certain level of belief in oneself, which is wonderful when an air of confidence is required but less so when forced to abase oneself before a petty manager to win a place in poorly-paid employment.  So to hell with all of that, Loki will do as he likes, and since following rules and following orders are not things he likes (and, quite honestly, they are not things he is good at either) then something has to give.  Concern for the legality of a given career, for instance.
