018. a memorable meal this year? oh fuck dude, SO many. i traveled a lot this year (14 countries in 12 months!) and got to eat SO much good food. so here's just a list of some great meals i had and where:
earlier this month i spent a weekend in brooklyn with my siblings and we got a table eat a small italian restaurant and i had THE most delicious bolognese. they also had a specialty cocktail that was super citrusy which is right up my alley and some great roasted brussel sprouts
in accra, we went to a late lunch and let our local guide order all of our food. there was this one local grilled fish?? fucking to die for, it was SO good.
over the summer i went on a trip to europe with my siblings, and in spain it was rainy and we were all so fucking tired from traveling that they went out and grabbed a bunch of local meats and cheeses and breads from a nearby market while i babysat my niece, and then we all just sat around the table in our airbnb and devoured the food with some cheap red wine and it was To Die For™
this is random but in cape town i went out to dinner one night at a belgian restaurant and while the overall meal was fine, there was a salad??? that was fucking amazing??? and i've been obsessed with recreating it to the point that i actually emailed the restaurant begging them to tell me the ingredients (they did not answer lol). the menu lists it as: garden greens with goat cheese, pear, and honeyed walnuts. i wish i knew the dressing
flying home from my asia trip in november, i had a short layover in tokyo and ate airport ramen at 7AM and it was soooo fucking tasty.
i spent literally only 24 hours in nairobi and for our one night i went out with 2 other girls to a brazilian-japanese fusion restaurant our hotel concierge recommended to us. we were wearing our travel jeans and this restaurant was insanely fancy and we had no reservations and they were fully booked, but one girl literally put her hands together and BEGGED that they let us eat there. it was beautiful, and fascinating, a little weird??? but incredibly memorable. i got a v rich seafood paella
in dublin my brother kept getting a full irish breakfast so i finally ordered one our final morning at a little pub that google said was one of the best locations and it was mouth watering amazing. who knew blood sausage was so delicious??
i returned to kathmandu for the first time since i lived there in 2007 and i got to eat nepali momo's for the first time since i was a teen and they are JUST as good as i remembered and the dipping sauce is unlike any other i've tasted elsewhere, and at this point i just need to learn how to make it myself.
during our trip we happened to be in lisbon during their summer sardine festival?? i got to try fresh grilled sardines and while it was delicious, the best part was definitely just the ambiance of being at an open air festival with live music playing surrounded by people eating delicious food and having a great time
my coworker and i were wandering around doing the tourist thing in seoul and we walked out of one shop and were drawn in by the delicious smells wafting over from the tiny restaurant across the street. we walked in, were immediately seated, and realized that the restaurant served only 4 dishes and has a michelin star. we were served by a robot and the dumplings and noodle dishes were perfection, we both cleared our bowls and left nothing behind.
last may in addis with that same girl who'd begged in nairobi, we organized an excursion to a local restaurant with a cultural dance show. we ordered a huge tasting platter of ethiopian food and took someone else's recommendation to order the honey wine called tej. the food was great, the dancing was amazing, but the 3 of us COULD NOT stomach the tej and felt so bad about it bc we'd let the waitress talk us into ordering 3 each instead of 1 to share. we drank as much as we could and then poured what we could into our water bottles and tried to make it seem like we were fans.
LAST ONE I PROMISE: i got a small group of people together in taipei to visit a night market and we tried a bunch of different foods (chicken butt is wildly fatty, stinky tofu doesn't taste as bad as it smells but it's still not my favorite, and authentic taiwanese boba is amazing) but the winner of the night was my choice: crispy squid with seaweed seasoning. i didn't know squid could taste like that. i wish i'd ordered so much more.
✨end of the year asks✨
here are some pics of some of the meals below
#ask#anonymous#the only meals i don't think i have pics of is the italian dinner in brooklyn and the salad in cape town#i also chose to share a pic of the ethiopian food not the tej#kat travels#kat travels photography#sorry i know this was A LOT and you probably won't read it all#sometimes i get way too into this and it just becomes my journal lol

Iman and David Bowie
Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid (Iman) was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, on the 25ᵗʰ of July 1955. Her father was a diplomat and a former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and her mother was a gynecologist. While she was studying at the University of Nairobi, Iman was discovered by American photographer Peter Beard, and she subsequently moved to the United States to begin a modeling career. Her first modeling assignment was for Vogue in 1976. She became a muse for many prominent designers: Halston, Versace, Calvin Klein, Issey Miyake, Donna Karan, Yves Saint-Laurent. She also worked with plenty of notable photographers: Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz. Iman married her first husband Hassan in 1973 and divorced in 1975, and then married American pro basketballer Spencer Haywood in 1977. The union produced a daughter, Zulekha Haywood born in 1978. Iman and Haywood divorced a decade later. After almost two decades of modeling, Iman started her own cosmetics firm in 1994. Iman was approached in 2007 by the CEO of the Home Shopping Network (HSN) to create the clothing design line Global Chic. Today, her Global Chic collection is one of four best-selling items among more than 200 fashion and jewelry brands on HSN, having evolved into a line of affordable accessories.
David Robert Jones was born on the 8ᵗʰ of January 1947 in London. His mother was worked as a waitress at a cinema in Royal Tunbridge Wells and his father worked as a promotions officer for the children's charity Barnardo's. In 1953, Bowie moved with his family to Bromley. Two years later, he started attending Burnt Ash Junior School. His voice was considered "adequate" by the school choir, and he demonstrated above-average abilities in playing the recorder. At the age of nine, his dancing during the newly-introduced music and movement classes was strikingly imaginative: teachers called his interpretations "vividly artistic" and his poise "astonishing" for a child. Bowie formed his first band, the Konrads, in 1962 at the age of 15. Playing guitar-based rock and roll at local youth gatherings and weddings, but frustrated by his bandmates' limited aspirations, Bowie left the Konrads and joined another band, the King Bees. But again Bowie quit the band less than a month later to join the Manish Boys. Bowie met dancer Lindsay Kemp in 1967 and enrolled in his dance class at the London Dance Centre. In January 1968, Kemp choreographed a dance scene for a BBC play, The Pistol Shot, in the Theatre 625 series, and used Bowie with a dancer, Hermione Farthingale; the pair began dating, and moved into a London flat together. Bowie and Farthingale broke up in early 1969 when she went to Norway to take part in a film, Song of Norway. On the 11 ᵗʰ of July 1969, Bowie's first album "Space Oddity" was released five days ahead of the Apollo 11 launch, and reached the top five in the UK. Bowie's second album followed in November. In April 1969 Bowie met Angela Barnett, they married within a year. They had an open marriage. Angela described their union as a marriage of convenience so that she could get a permit to work. Their son Duncan, was born on the 30 of May 1971. Bowie moved to the US in 1974, initially staying in New York City before settling in Los Angeles. Bowie and Angela divorced on 8 February 1980 in Switzerland.
Iman and Bowie met in 1990 at a dinner party. Iman had recently retired from modeling and her hairdresser introduced her to the British singer-songwriter. For Bowie, it was love at first meeting. “My attraction to her was immediate and all-encompassing”. Her effect on the usually unflappable and smooth Bowie was intense. “I found her intolerably sexy”. It took a further two weeks before Iman was as on board with the relationship as Bowie. “His actions spoke louder [than words]” she said to The Cut in 2011. owie proposed in Paris and they married on the 24ᵗʰ of April 1992.
Iman and Bowie approached their marriage as a relationship to be shared with each other, not a public eager to hear intimate details about the “Space Oddity” singer and Vogue cover star. Aside from rare occasions, the couple kept the press separate from their home life.
They were rarely photographed together, appearing as a couple only in one Vogue magazine shoot and for a Hello! interview in their New York apartment following the birth of their daughter Alexandria in 2000, which Iman described as one of “the happiest times in my life,” and an event that drew the couple closer than ever before.
Quizzed over the whereabouts of her husband while attending a New York Valentine’s Day event solo in 2011, Iman told The Cut that they never celebrated the annual lovefest in public. “We never do Valentine’s dinner, because everybody, they look,” she said. “On Valentine’s, imagine me and David going to a restaurant! Like everybody’s going to say, ‘Did they talk? Did they hold hands?’ Twenty years. We’ve been married 20 years!”
Home life in New York was routine. Iman revealed to Harper’s Bazaar in 2010 that like many couples with a young child, daily life involved early morning school runs and soccer and music classes. “I vowed to myself when I got married that I would cook every night,” she said. “I find it very therapeutic.” Bowie, who retired from touring in 2004, told ET that “first for me is our marriage and second is career. If there was a choice between one or the other, there’s no question.”
So intense was their desire for privacy, the world was left shocked when Bowie died on the 10 ᵗʰ of January 2016, at age 69 from liver cancer. Even his close musical collaborators had no idea the prolific singer had been sick.
Two years later, Iman opened up about her feelings during an interview with Porter magazine. “Sometimes, I don’t want people to know how sad I am. People say to me, ‘Oh, you’re so strong.’ I’m not strong — I am just trying to keep it together”.
When questioned about whether she would consider entering into a new romantic relationship, the model-turned-entrepreneur was firm in her response: “I will never remarry. I mentioned my husband the other day with someone, and they said to me, ‘You mean your late husband?’ I said, no, he is always going to be my husband.

Once upon a time, I worked in an office building across the street from a dimly-lit, hole-in-the-wall Spanish bar called The Maiden, which my coworkers and I frequented probably two or three times a week. The sangria was so potent it would knock you off your bar stool, and the happy hour menu consisted of a dazzling array of tapas I still dream about today, ten years after the bar closed down. It was the first place I ever had patatas bravas (fried chunks of crisp, salty potato drizzled in romesco sauce and aioli), and albondigas (Spanish-style meatballs), and my favorite, pa amb tomàquet (or pan con tomate), a deceptively simple but life-changingly delicious Catalan snack of grilled bread rubbed with olive oil, garlic, sea salt, and crushed tomato. It remains, over a decade later, the absolute best bar food of my entire life, and I have never found it on the menu of another restaurant in my city ever again. (Clearly, I need to go to Spain.)
Anyway, this fic is at least to a small degree a love letter to all my years of sangria nights at The Maiden, as well as to the wonderful dinner scenes this show has gifted us with. “Sobremesa” - literally, “over the table” - refers to the Spanish custom of lingering at the table after a meal for wine, conversation, laughter, and (in at least a few cases) the planning of heists. I wanted to write something that was just pure family joy, set during those beautiful sunny days with baby goats and bowls of fresh strawberries and singing monks, when even Palermo was kind of delightful.
I hope you all enjoy.

Day 42
Sat 15th Feb
Safari in Lake Nakuru 🦒🦓🦏🦩🌞
The pillows in our room were officially the worst pillows in Africa so far and in the night we’d had to put our travel pillow inside one case, and one of our PUFFY COATS in the other. I planned to file a complaint with Philly Tours first thing the next morning.
On the contrary, the hotel had prepared our takeaway breakfast with so much care and attention. There were proper takeaway cups and packaged up food, including our leftovers from the night before so Phil tipped the two chefs and waiter a dollar each. They were buzzing.
Thankfully, our Safari vehicle arrived (so we hadn’t been completely ripped off by Peter) and it was a good vehicle, not a crappy minibus like we’d seen some people safari’ing in. The two French girls in there were nice but they hadn’t bought their passports with them, so paying at the entrance was a bit awkward - until I reminded them a picture might be fine and they found one on their phones. PHEW.
At first, the safari was a little underwhelming as we could see the edges of the park around us with all the buildings of the town. But then we went around the lake and deeper into the park - and then it was really cool. It was more chilled out than the Masai Mara, not as impressive of course, but still nice. There were quite a few areas that had issues from previous flooding though. A couple of roads had been built up with rocks and we passed a lot of dead trees atmospherically positioned in flooded land with loads of ugly maribou stork birds and baboons around. There was a weird atmosphere in those areas and it sort of felt like they were about to attack the vehicle. Then our driver was like ‘Make sure all the food is hidden as the baboons might attack the vehicle’. Oh god, planet of the apes could be REAL.
We got through all the baboons scratching and picking at each others arses without being attacked, then spotted giraffes and warthogs (there’s always warthogs), but then our driver managed to get us to an AMAZING spot where we saw two adult white rhinos and a baby right next to us! The adults had a bit of a stand off and we watched on in amazement.
We visited a nice waterfall where the water was a little brown from the mud, then we headed to a lodge for our lunch stop. We had bought our lunch with us as Peter had told us it would be 25$ per person to eat in the park, but outside the entrance was a massive sign in capital letters saying NO PICNICS ALLOWED. Great.
After the manager flat our refused for us to eat are food there, we made friends with the waiter and he said we could eat it if we were subtle and ordered other things - so I had a vegetable soup and Phil had a bang average veggie sandwich and chips. We sat with the French girls and one of them randomly said that the best ketchup she’s ever had was when we was in Ireland when she had a delicious homemade ketchup somewhere. LOL did not expect that to be what she remembered about Ireland, Stella & Helen will be disgusted. She also said that the grass on safari was green but the grass in Ireland is the greenest in the world she thinks. Ketchup and grass = Irelands legacy.
While we sat in the restaurant we went to book our train as we’d decided which day to get it. And guess what? It was fully booked again. We’d left it too late, assuming the weekdays wouldn’t be so busy. IDIOTS.
On the afternoon drive, we were lucky enough to spot a black rhino, much rarer to see than the white. It was peacefully grazing amongst zebras, impalas and warthogs - it looked amazing, had a proper tortois-y dinosaur face!
Over the whole safari, we saw:
Buffalo
Giraffe (endangered Rothschild type)
Monkeys
Baboons
Flamingoes
Maribou Storks
Pelicans
Pumbas
White Rhino
Black Rhino
When we got back to the hotel, Phil noticed that his shorts had disappeared from the bush they were drying on outside the room. It was obvious someone had been trimming that very bush as it was all neat and there were clippings on the ground, so Phil asked reception. They assured him they’d ask the gardener and find them. I was convinced they’d been nicked...
We half decided to eat at the hotel again out of pure laziness and fatigue, but as soon as we walked in I was like Why are we here. It ain’t for a plate of vegetables thats for sure. So we went to reception to get a taxi to town as we knew there was a Java cafe there and it was a safe bet, and plus if we went to town, we could book our coach tickets for Nairobi to the coast (damn you fully booked train!).
Our taxi driver annoyingly dropped us at a little shop with a Modern Coast kiosk that was CLOSED instead of the actual Modern Coast office HOW BLOODY USELESS. So we ended up walked through the busy town while really hungry looking for a tuc tuc to get to the right place. Then we saw Java cafe on a corner so thought screw it, We’re really hungry so lets just eat first.
But then...we walked over and the door was LOCKED. I could see people inside eating their food, but it had closed at 7pm and it was now 7:15pm. Oh ffs.
We stood outside it feeling a little sad, then the manager walked over to the door, popped his head out the door and smiled at us ‘There’s another Java cafe if you want to eat, just over in the Mall!’. OMG what a legend, we KNEW Java wouldn’t let us down like this. Thanks random man 👍🏽.
We jumped in a tuc tuc to go to Modern Coast and Phil jumped out to get the tickets while I paid. The driver and his mate (not sure why he had a mate with him but whatever) then tried to overcharge me. I paid them 200ksh as that was more than enough and then one of them was like ‘Miss, Buy me a tea’. He had this really annoying look on his face like he was telling me I had to do it. Excuse me buddy, that is not how you ask someone if they’d like to buy you a gift.
We needed a tuc tuc to get to the mall but I didn’t want to go with them out of principal so we walked there like fools. It was only 10 minutes but it was down a crappy dusty busy road and we were hungry. But at least we had our morals right?!
We passed a shop with hats and remembered my quest for a baseball cap (look, I know its a bad idea, but I need one for safaris okkkkkkk). I tried a few on and honest to god it might be the worst I’ve ever looked ever. HORRENDOUS. So no, I didn’t buy one. The search continues.
Dinner at Java was half good and half annoying. Our starter of tomato soups were bought over and the girl said ‘Two chicken soups’. Uh, no love, we ordered tomato soup - so she walked away to check with our waitress who was dealing with another table. This waitress then bought the soups back over and fully tried to blag it ‘Two chicken soups’ she said as she tried to palm them off onto us. I’m not gonna lie, part of me wanted to just take the chicken and peanut soup as I’ll bet it was tasty as fook. - but no, we told her the mistake and waited patiently for our TOMATO soups.
After the soup, I honestly felt full (mental I know) so my Mexican burrito was ready for takeaway after two bites. Phil managed to devour his vege burger no problem.
On return to the hotel, still no sign of the shorts (cos they’d been nicked obvs) but I forced the reception guy to find me new pillows and he basically broke into someone’s room while they weren’t there and took the pillows off their bed. BOVERED cos they were SO much better, as in, they were actual pillows and not a bag of socks. So I went to bed happy. Well, I did until I checked my phone and saw the news that Caroline Flack had passed away. It wasn’t officially suicide at that point, but from the reports it seemed the most likely scenario. It felt incredibly weird to be sat in Kenya and to think she’d died that very day, while we’d been on a safari, and we went to bed feeling very strange and very sad.
