5,6, and 7 for the costume asks, if you have been asked those already?:D
Thanks for the ask!
5. What is your favorite decade of the 20th century for costumes?
Well, a couple of days ago, it was the 1910s. But I've just been rewatching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, so today I'm all about the 1920s! Give me cloche hats, handkerchief skirts, and dropped waistlines!

The 1920s are also sometimes more elaborate and ornate than people remember:

6. Do you prefer strict historical accuracy or free interpretations of historical costume?
Ooh, I'm glad someone finally asked me this one! The short answer is this: all else being equal, give me strict historical accuracy, as close as you can make it.
The longer answer is that I do understand that different films may have different goals, and sometimes strict historical accuracy doesn't match the goal of the film. I can make allowances in those cases and appreciate what the costumer is setting out to do--so, for example, the costumes in Bridgerton don't upset me. Except where they're supposed to, that is (the Featheringtons are clearly supposed to have appalling taste even within that universe).
But if a film can actually give me the illusion of being transported to a different time, I love that. And glaring historical inaccuracies throw me right out of it.
I also sort of feel like simulating a different historical era has gone out of fashion in filmmaking, compared to films made in the second half of the 20th century. And I think that's rather sad, because it's one of the things movies can do better than just about any other art form. I'm sure it's partly for financial reasons; I read a very interesting post a while back about how costume designers just typically are not given as much time to work on a movie these days.
7. Who is your favorite costume designer?
It's so hard to choose just one! But during the time I've been working on this blog, I've really come to respect Walter Plunkett. He worked with so many different periods of costume, from historical to contemporary. He always did his homework thoroughly, and he took the trouble to understand the rules before breaking them.
I've also got to give a shout-out to Bernard Newman, who designed many of Ginger Rogers' dresses for her movies with Fred Astaire. Those are some of the best dresses ever.

Bernard Newman „Rowerem wokół Bałtyku 1938”
Wydawnictwo Znak, 2024 Niewątpliwą niespodziankę sprezentowało czytelnikom Wydawnictwo Znak, przygotowując i wydając kolejny tom reportaży z rowerowych podróży Bernarda Newmana.

Ciekawy jest to pomysł – brytyjski dżentelmen rowerem przemierza Polskę Ludową , by następnie odmalować portret „kraju nad Wisłą” w roku 1958. Portret to na pewno wzruszający, miejscami zabawny, ale miejscami też nieco przerażający; oddany słowami Polaków: chłopów, robotników, poetów, polityków, dziennikarzy… Bernard Newman urodził się w 1897 roku w Wielkiej Brytanii. Był uczestnikiem I wojny światowej, w czasie której podobno mi.in. pracował w wywiadzie. W czasie swojego życia odbył wiele podróży zagranicznych, w tym rowerowych, głównie w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym, a wrażenia z nich opisał na kartach kilkudziesięciu książek. Zmarł w 1963 roku.
W powojennej Polsce odwiedził i stolicę, i Małopolskę, ale też - Ziemie Zachodnie i Północne, lokując swoje podróżne doświadczenia w niezbędnym kontekście historycznym.
Lektura ciekawa zwłaszcza z naszej dzisiejszej perspektywy. [jk]

OKAYYYY just watched The Santa Clause 2 for the first time and these are my thoughts: 🎅 i think this is the best movie of the main trilogy in terms of storytelling!! it's got all the cynicism and adult humour of the first one and all the sweet Christmas goofiness of the third, and balances it perfectly 💖 🎅 i'm starting to see what all you Bernard fans enjoy so much about him 😉 🎅 nothing could have prepared me for the nightmarish horror that is Toy!Santa's face. that thing is some Return to Oz levels of uncanny and it worked beautifully 💀 🎅 Carol is an absolute gem of a person and i wish she got to express more of her personality in the third movie!! she really is a perfect match for Scott and i love how they make each other smile 🥰 🎅 the costume design and set design was stellar as always!!! seriously so many excellent details in every scene, especially with the toys!! 🎅 so surprised by how well the kid actors did, especially Liliana Mumy 🔥

Can you imagine Steven Spielberg humiliating his composer John Williams in public?
That’s what happened during the post-production of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “Torn Curtain”.
As Bernard Herrmann, who had delivered the goodies on Hitchcock’s classic movies - the screeching violin in “Psycho”, the obsessive motifs of “Vertigo” - was recording his new score, Hitchcock shut the recording session down and stormed off.
He then did what the studio had been suggesting all along by going for a “younger” type of music. (You can read “younger” as less edgy and melodic instead of rhythmic.)
The 100% melodic British film composer John Addison took the baton and wrote a romantic score with some spy movie elements. He created a Cold War, Eastern-European mood with very simple means, for instance.
Addison is best known for scoring the epic World War II movie “A Bridge Too Far” (Richard Attenborough).
Uncanny detail: as a young man, tank commander Addison participated in the Normandy landings and got wounded during the tank battle that liberated the French city Caen. Operation “Market Garden”, shown by Attenborough, came after operation “Goodwood”, the invasion.
