Well, um, hiya☆
I've come to life a little here and brought you some interesting features in the characters' spoken language
To begin with, let's look at the male trio of main characters: Naruhodō, Mitsurugi, Odoroki (Wright, Edgeworth, Justice)
Some people know it, some don't, but in Japanese there are many options for how to refer to yourself, i.e. "I" can be said with different pronouns and they are all ranked by gender (there are also gender-neutral ones) and the level of politeness.
The first one we have is Naruhodō.
He always, regardless of the situation, uses the pronoun "boku" (ぼく) in relation to himself.
僕 (ぼく)
僕 (boku) is a first-person pronoun often associated with male speakers. It has earnest, polite, cultured connotations. Overall, 僕 (boku) has a softer, less aggressive than 俺 (ore), another common pronoun with masculine connotations.
Naruhodō uses it both in the first trilogy, when he is 24-26 years old, and after the 7-year gap, when he is 33-35. It doesn't matter if he is in the courtroom or talking to friends - he always uses "boku".
Tumblr media
言わずと知れた、ぼくだ。 若手実力派弁護士として、 今年で3年目に入る。
Iwazu to shireta, bokuda. Wakate jitsuryoku-ha bengoshi to shite, kotoshi de 3-nen menihairu.
It goes without saying that it is me. I am a young and talented lawyer, and this is my third year in the industry.
___________________________________________
ぼく・・・・今、弁護士を 目指して、勉強しているんです。
boku ima, bengoshi o mezashite, benkyō shite iru ndesu.
I'm studying to become a lawyer.
___________________________________________
いいや。ぼくは、 大学は芸術学部だったからね。
Ī ya. Boku wa, daigaku wa geijutsu gakubudattakara ne.
No. I entered the arts department at the university.
___________________________________________
When addressing someone, Naruhodo uses pronoun "omae".
お前 (おまえ)
お前 is a second-person pronoun that's masculine and rough — it's often used for cussing! It could also be a way to show affection to close friends, partners, and family in a very casual manner.
It is curious that he only addresses Mitsurugi this way, while he addresses the others (Mayoi, Odoroki, etc.) by name + suffix (Mayoi-chan, Odoroki-kun).
Tumblr media
もしかして、おまえ・・・・ やったんじゃないの?
Moshikashite, omae yatta n janai no?
Maybe you... did it?
___________________________________________
そういうおまえだって、捜査の時は 証拠品をつきつけまくってたとか。
Sōiu omae datte, sōsa no toki wa shōko-hin o tsukitsuke makutteta to ka.
Even you, who is like that, apparently presented a lot of evidence during the investigation.
___________________________________________
おはよう。思ったより早かったねえ ・・・・オドロキくん。
Ohayō. Omottayori hayakatta ne e Odoroki-kun.
Good morning. It was earlier than I thought... Odoroki-kun.
___________________________________________
Next up we have Mitsurugi.
Mr. Politeness uses the pronoun "watashi" when referring to himself.
私 (わたし/わたくし)
わたし (watashi) is quite a common first-person pronoun as it's used regardless of gender, and both in casual and formal situations. It also has a certain elegant, sophisticated feel to it.
It also does not change over time, and is used by him both at 24-26 and at 34-35 years old.
Tumblr media
私が異議をとなえれば、裁判長は かならず聞き入れるだろう、と。
Watashi ga igi o tonaereba, saiban-chō wa kanarazu kikiirerudarou, to.
If I raised an objection, the judge would certainly listen.
___________________________________________
私が検事の職をまっとうできるのも、 周りの誰かの支えがあってこそ。
Watashi ga kenji no shoku o mattō dekiru no mo, mawari no dareka no sasae ga atte koso.
It is only thanks to the support of those around me that I am able to carry out my duties as a prosecutor.
___________________________________________
礼を言うのは・・・・ 私のほうだ、成歩堂。
rei o iu no wa watashi no hōda, Naruhodō.
I should be the one to thank you, Naruhodo.
___________________________________________
But he has a special attitude towards the informal address "you". And by the way, it depends on the situation Mitsurugi is in, and not on who he is addressing.
Because he uses at least 4 (maybe more, I couldn't catch them all) options of address!
The first is "omae". We have already discussed it, so I will not repeat myself. But the situation in which it is used is when Mitsurugi tries to be cheeky, when he makes fun of others (most often, of course, Naruhodō)
Tumblr media
お前のせいだぞ。成歩堂。
Omae no seida zo. Naruhodō.
It's your fault, Naruhodō.
___________________________________________
異国でも証拠品のつきつけとは、
お前も相変わらずだな。
Ikoku demo shōko-hin no tsukitsuke to wa, omae mo aikawarazuda na.
You're still the same, presenting evidence even in a foreign country.
___________________________________________
Next, the address "kimi".
君 (きみ/キミ)
君 (kimi) is a second-person pronoun with various nuances. Some dictionaries define 君 as a pronoun you can use in a friendly way towards someone of equal or lower status. These days, however, the way 君 is perceived varies quite a bit from person to person.
Outside of hierarchical situations like the workplace, 君 is used a lot to sound literary or poetic.
Tumblr media
成歩堂。折り入って キミに頼みたいことがある。
Naruhodō. Oriitte kimi ni tanomitai koto ga aru.
Naruhodō. There's something I'd like to ask you.
___________________________________________
キミのいない法曹界は 平和そのものだったよ。
Kimi no inai hōsōkai wa heiwa sonomonodatta yo.
The legal profession would be at peace without you.
___________________________________________
いや。・・・・・・・・だが、結局 キミの力にはなれなかった。
Īya. Daga, kekkyoku kimi no chikara ni hanarenakatta.
No... But in the end, I couldn't be of any help to you.
In the example, Mitsurugi asks Naruhodō for help, so I don't think it's a hierarchy thing. It's more of an equal thing. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
___________________________________________
And then comes the most epic part. Kisama.
貴様 (きさま/キサマ)
貴様 (kisama) is a second-person pronoun that's masculine and rough, it's often in combination with vulgar language!
Although it's associated with masculinity, that doesn't mean it's a pronoun only for men. Even if you don't use 貴様 regularly, it's a great way of expressing your anger.
貴様 can also be a way to show affection in a very casual way towards close friends, partners, and family. In this case, the above example would be playful, rather than showing genuine anger.
Mitsurugi uses it when he gets angry (usually in the courtroom) and sometimes in relation to friends. So, the area of application is justified by its purpose as a pronoun.
Tumblr media
キサマの娘が、人を小さなハコに 詰め込むというショーをな!
Kisama no musume ga, hito o chīsana Hako ni tsumekomu to iu shō o na!
Your daughter puts people into tiny boxes in a show!
___________________________________________
き、キサマなどに、美的感覚を 非難されるイワレはない!
kisama nado ni, biteki kankaku o hinan sa reru iware wanai!
You have no right to criticize aesthetic sense!
And the last one - addressing by name + suffix or without suffix (Mayoi-kun, Naruhodō)
___________________________________________
Next - Odoroki Hosuke (Apollo Justice)
He's a real manly man, haha. He always uses the pronoun "ore".
俺 (おれ/オレ)
俺 (ore) is a first-person pronoun with a strong masculine feel. It sounds "manly" and less gentle than 僕. 俺 is also a pretty casual pronoun and can be seen as vulgar, especially when used in formal situations. In order to use 俺 naturally, the speech style also needs to match the manliness of 俺.
Tumblr media
オレは、ここの事務所の 所長さんに会いに来たんだよ。
ore wa, koko no jimusho no shochō-san ni ai ni kita nda yo.
I came here to see the director of this office.
___________________________________________
オレも、ちょっとならできるよ。
A odoroki ore mo, chottonara dekiru yo.
I can do it a little bit magic too.
___________________________________________
But he doesn't bother with addressing others, and always addresses them by name + suffix (Naruhodo-san, Minuki-chan, Garyu-kenji, Mitsurugi-kenji)
Tumblr media
成歩堂さんが 弁護士をやめたのって・・・・
Naruhodō-san ga bengoshi o yameta notte
Naruhodō-san quit being a lawyer...
___________________________________________
(みぬきちゃん。 片付け始めたぞ・・・・)
(Minuki-chan. Katadzuke hajimeta zo)
(Minuki-chan, you're starting to clean up...)
___________________________________________
P.S.
I hope this will clarify the characters a bit and give you a new perspective on them.
One day, I'll do the same with the main female characters (because it takes a lot of time, but I bless those who post screen recordings and screenshots, thanks to them I can quickly find the right moment).
There may be errors and typos, don't be afraid to point them out to me

Hello! I was wondering if you could maybe write bsd x gn or m reader who’s proficient enough in Japanese to.. well, manage, but still isn’t great at it? Not sure who you write for but maybe Atsushi or Dazai or Ranpo?
(Totally didn’t just request this because I’m learning Japanese and some of this grammar and kanji are killing me lmaooo)
Thanks :DDD
"A Little Help!! ♡˖" Atsushi Nakajima x M!Reader
Warnings; I have very minimal knowledge on Japanese, so please do bare with me lol, probably bad translations, but other than that pure fluff!!
Description; Atsushi and Ranpo helping their partner with their Japanese skills
Tumblr media
A/N; IM SO SORRY I ONLY DID ONE CHARACTER BC I HAVE VERY LIMITED KNOWLEDGE ON THE LANGUAGE AND DIDNT WANNA REPEAT SCENARIOS SO I USED GOOGLE TRANSLATE BUT I PUT WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO SAY AT THE BOTTOM BUT PLS DO TELL IF YOU WANT ME TO RE-WRITE IT THO I ABSOLUTELY WILL ♡ GOOD LUCK IN YOUR LEARNING 💓
Atsushi is gonna teach you everything you need to know if you're struggling with the language. He'll teach you how to memorize and recognize the kanji since he is well acquainted with the symbols.
Scenario !! ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥
Recently, you've really been taking the initiative to better your Japanese skills, but identifying all the different kanji was quite the hurdle to jump without landing flat on your face. When speaking the language, you had no problem with basic stuff, but when it came to actually reading the language, it got a little more difficult. Luckily for you, you happened to have a boyfriend who was fluent in the language.
Occasionally you would hang around the Ada, using it as an opportunity to utilize the words and phrases you knew. Ofcourse there was some anxiety regarding conversation going further than you pleased and crossing into topics you couldn't fluently speak on. You figured it could be a good learning experience though, so you powered through the long days at the agency, acting as a secretary.
Your ears perked up at the quiet sound of the door opening, a woman walking in, your boyfriend Atsushi following behind her. You give them both a small smile, not quite sure if she was going to speak with you or not yet. Then, she opened her mouth.
"Kon'nichiwa, Kunikida-san to hanashite mo īdesu ka?" ¹ She asks, her head tilted ever so slightly. Her short brown hair sways to one side while she speaks. You think for a moment before replying
"Mōshiwakearimasenga, kare wa ima koko ni imasen." ² You tell her, remembering that Kunikida and Ranpo had gone somewhere on investigation earlier that morning and have yet to return. You give her that one look of faux sympathy or apology as you talk. Atsushi listens to you speak, smiling and giving you a thumbs up from behind the woman, essentially cheering you on. He walks around the woman and stands at your side.
"Ā, daijōbudesu. Ashita no yoyaku o shite mo īdesu ka?" ³ You swallowed a small lump on your throat before looking over at Atsushi for help. "She wants to make an appointment for tomorrow to speak with Kunikida. Do you know how to reply?" He asks, a reassuring smile on his face. "Kare wa mada gengo o benkyō-chūdesuga, wa i, dekimasu." ⁴ You hear him say to the woman, to which she replies with an understanding nod. You wrack your brain quickly for a response, and you find one.
"Nanji?" You reply, praying that you remembered the correct phrase for your question, but when you aren't met with a small giggle or sigh of annoyance, you feel a lot better. She tells you the time and asks to have it written down on a small piece of paper because of her poor memory. You grabbed a sticky note from the desk with a pen, scribbling down the time and handing it to her. Atsushi watches you write, his gaze soft as he takes a seat next to you. The woman thanks you and leaves, the door clicking again just as it had done when she entered.
"See, you did pretty good." He says with a smile, resting his head in his hand. You sigh, doubtful of your accuracy in the conversation. "Yeah, I probably did, but I couldn't have the conversation fully on my own. You had to translate one of her sentences." You say, putting your head down and resting it on your folded forearms. He rubs your back gently, patting it after a couple seconds.
"Hey, that's not a bad thing. Me telling you what that means is only gonna help you recognize it later." He says, trying his best to reassure you. "If you really want to be able to strive without..in the moment help, you can always ask me to teach you stuff." He smiles warmly. You give him a smile and sit upwards again, his hand sliding down to the small of your back now.
"That would actually be really nice." You stare into his pretty eyes, taking in his facial features, seemingly studying them harder than you studied Japanese. He blushed under your stare and averted his eyes to look at his lap instead. "What specifically do you have a hard time with?" He says, his voice relatively quiet as you both sat in the otherwise silent room. "Kanji." You reply instantly, knowing that if a part of a language could oppose you, it would be kanji.
Your boyfriend nods in understanding, having figured that kanji would be your toughest subject, given how similar a lot of them look. "Okay. You can come back to my apartment tonight if you want and I can teach you. We can scrape together some money and buy take out, too." He says with a smile. You nod in agreement before you both go about the rest of your day, eagerly looking forward to that evening.
When you both arrive back to his apartment, Atsushi grabs some paper and pens, handing you one of them. He guides you to sit at the kitchen table. He writes down some kanji symbols in his neatest handwriting.
"Alright, here, tell me the difference between these two." On the paper, the symbols "緑" and "縁" are written. "Well..the bottom right corners are different from the other." You say. He nods in confirmation. "Yeah! See? You have to really observe each symbol." He says with a smile. This goes on for a while, Atsushi teaching you how to differentiate the symbols as well as telling you their meanings before you've both tired yourselves out enough to nearly fall asleep as soon as your body hit the couch. Atsushi hugged your torso as he layed on your chest, his head in the crook of your neck.
"But yeah, that's basically as simple as it is." He says with a yawn, seemingly dismissing the topic of your second language for the moment. You brush some of his hair out of his face while he cuddles into your chest some more. "Yeah, I mean, it really doesn't seem that hard, but it's easier to say something like that then to act like it." You murmur back, pressing a gentle kiss to his head. "But I've got such a great boyfriend to help me, huh?" You say happily, to which he nods. "And I've got such a great boyfriend to teach."
A/N #2; here's the guide as promised 😞💔 this sat in my drafts for like the past two weeks but im so glad i finally fulfilled it. Sometimes
Tumblr media
1~ Hello, may I speak with Kunikida?
2~ I'm sorry, he's not here right now.
3~ Oh, its alright. Can I make an appointment for tomorrow?
4~ hes still learning the language, but yes, you can
5~ What time?

Hiii! I’d also like to take up Japanese, but beyond memorizing the Hiragana and Katakana characters I’m not exactly sure how to proceed with vocab and learning Kanji at the same time.
Do you have a plan/sources that you stick to? I also like how your sheets are organized! Did you do them yourself?
Hi there! ♡
First of all I should stress that my experience may be slightly different since I was learning Japanese via university course, with help from a tutor. However, I'll try to answer the best I can.
Get a textbook. It will provide you a structure and introduce to basic grammar points in suitable order, together with kanji and vocabulary. My knowledge isn't very broad here, because we used a specific series in class which is Minna no Nihongo (probably one of, if not The most common one). The significant disadvantage is that it's written entirely in Japanese, so not exactly the best for total beginners who don't have exercises explained by a teacher BUT there's also an English book "Translation and Grammar notes" which, as it says, includes translations of dialogues, texts, example sentences, etc. + vocabulary lists for every chapter alongside very neatly explained grammar points and grammar structures, so I can't stress enough how profitable it is to get it too. Apart from these, I also came across a kanji book. Fortunately, pdfs can be retrieved from google (hit me up if you're interested and have problems with finding them). I've also seen praising reviews of Genki, I looked it through and apparently also have everything what one could expect from a regular textbook, just better divided on different grammar/vocabulary/reading/so on parts than Minna and, unlike MnN, it's written in English.
About kanji and vocab. You probbaly noticed that things like nouns, verbs, adjectives and such are often written with kanji, so it may seem a natural move to learn all these kanji at once while learning vocabulary. I'm saying - not exactly. The good thing is that for the beginning you can write new words only in hiragana (or katakana) memorize them, and later "match" kanji to them (not like in mandarin chinese, yes, i'm looking at you mandarin). For example, you found out that "to study" is べんきょう する (benkyō suru). It's ok to write it this way and later replace "べんきょう" part with kanji (勉強する). We did it at the course, I had been knowing only hiragana writings for maaaany words and only after some time introduced kanji to them, gradually. Otherwise I would end up having to learn hundreds of kanji early on and I'd definitely feel discouraged by that.
About kanji and readings. It somehoew refers to what I wrote above. Don't memorize ALL possible readings of a kanji without using them in practice. For example, according to a dictionary kanji 人 "human, man, person" has five different readings: ジン, ニン, ひと, り, と. It looks like kun/on readings soup. What's a better way? You learnt that "person" (人) is pronounced ひと. Or "population" (人口) is じんこう (see ジン reading here?). Wait, that's better - "doll/puppet" which is にんぎょう (人形). You see my point?
Summing it a bit up, when making a vocabulary list, firstly write words in hiragana/katakana and if you at some point learn a kanji for some of these words, replace them using that kanji. When learning kanji themselves, sure, learn how to write them, stroke by stroke, even memorize their basic meanings, however, if learning pronounciation (readings), add a word, two, three containing these kanji alongside the full reading.
I'm planning to make a kind of masterlist of resources I personally use but for now I can recommend dictionaries like jisho (online) or kanji dictionary (Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary). For extra grammar explanation "Tofugu" and "Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese" websites or a book "Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar" are good sources. The sheets you're asking about I made myself. Kanji are from class and featured in Minna books, verbs as well but mostly taken from another Kodansha book. Like I wrote, I'm going to list everything in a separate post so just give me a moment to compile it :)
Sorry for the lenghty answer, not sure if that's what you expected but I hope I helped!
