The Essentiality of Environmental Rights: Safeguarding Our Planet and Our Future
Tumblr media
In the light of rising ecological calamities and the unavoidable depletion of our planet's resources, the call for environmental rights has never been more urgent. Environmental rights cover the essential privileges and obligations that maintain the integrity of our natural world, ensuring its preservation for present and future generations. In this blog, we'll look at the functions, benefits, and serious implications of ignoring environmental rights.
Functions of Environmental Rights:
Legal Protection: Environmental rights establish a legal framework for protecting ecosystems, wildlife, and natural resources. They empower individuals and communities to hold governments and companies accountable for environmental damage.
Public Participation: These rights allow residents to engage in environmental decision-making processes, ensuring that their voices are heard on issues that directly affect their communities. This participation encourages transparency, accountability, and democratic governance.
Access to Information: Environmental rights provide access to information on environmental policy, initiatives, and potential hazards. This transparency encourages educated decision-making and gives communities the ability to advocate for environmentally sustainable practices.
Environmental justice seeks to overcome differences in environmental protection and pollutant exposure. They want to make sure that everyone, regardless of color, ethnicity, or socioeconomic level, has equal access to a clean, healthy environment.
Benefits of Environmental Rights for People:
1. Environmental rights protect human health by limiting exposure to pollutants and toxins. Clean air, water, and soil promote physical and mental well-being by reducing the number of respiratory diseases, waterborne illnesses, and other health risks.
2. Economic Prosperity: Long-term economic growth requires a healthy environment. Environmental rights encourage the conservation of natural resources, the preservation of biodiversity, and the development of eco-friendly companies that generate jobs and support economic growth.
3. Cultural Preservation: Indigenous and underprivileged populations frequently have strong cultural ties to their land and environment. Environmental rights contribute to the preservation of traditional knowledge, cultural legacy, and sacred sites, hence promoting diversity and resilience.
4. Climate resistance: Environmental rights play an important role in reducing climate change and raising awareness of its effects. These rights help to create a more resilient and sustainable future for everyone by encouraging clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate adaptation strategies.
Damage Caused by Neglecting Environmental Rights:
1. Ecological Degradation: Failure to protect environmental rights causes widespread ecological degradation, such as deforestation, habitat loss, species extinction, and ecosystem collapse. This degradation disturbs nature's delicate balance, harming biodiversity and risking the planet's ability to support life.
2. Public Health Concerns: Environmental neglect causes air and water pollution, chemical contamination, and the spread of infectious diseases. These environmental health concerns disproportionately affect those with limited resources, compounding health inequities and endangering human welfare.
3. Resource Scarcity: Ignoring environmental rights depletes scarce resources like clean water, agricultural land, and fossil fuels, resulting in scarcity, competitiveness, and conflict. Resource depletion worsens poverty, food shortages, and social unrest, endangering global peace and security.
4. Climate Catastrophes: Disregard for environmental rights promotes climate change, resulting in harsh weather, rising sea levels, and ecological disruptions. These climatic calamities have a severe impact on vulnerable areas, displacing people, worsening poverty, and increasing humanitarian crises.
At last, environmental rights are essential for safeguarding the health, well-being, and prosperity of current and future generations. By defending these rights, we can conserve our planet's ecosystems, promote social fairness, and lessen the terrible effects of environmental destruction.
For the benefit of our world and all its inhabitants, governments, corporations, and individuals must continue to honor their duties to respect, defend, and fulfill environmental rights.

while i get where this comes from and it’s true to an extent, i reeeaaaally don’t like how people try to explain “trans men don’t [necessarily] have male privilege” with things like “some trans men don’t pass”.
like sure that’s the most obvious example (someone who is seen as a woman won’t have the privilege that comes with being seen a man) but you’re still acting like being a passing trans man is just a free opt-in to male privilege which is………kinda the issue.

re last reblog I do see fanfic culture pushing/replicating a certain model of "what trauma looks like," "how trauma works"
this is a problem across all areas of society obviously, but transformative works are, well, transformative. they're about crafting and modifying narratives where the fan-creator sees a flaw or a lack -- often for the better! don't get me wrong, I've done my fair share of "I take a hammer and I fix the canon," it's the main thing that gets my creative gears spinning -- but what happens when that "flaw" is simply a narrative not conforming to popular expectations?
some people just don't get PTSD from events that sound obviously traumatic. they're not masking, and they're not coping; they just straight-up didn't get the permanently-locked stress-response that defines PTSD. they walk away from a horrible experience going "well, that sucked, but it's over now." some people do get PTSD from events most people wouldn't find traumatic. we don't really know why some people get PTSD and others don't. but fandom has an idea of events that must be traumatizing, of a "correct" way to portray trauma. you see the problems with this lack of understanding in e.g. fans pressuring the devs of Baldur's Gate 3 to add dialogue where the player character badgers Halsin about his own feelings on his abuse -- because he must be traumatized, and his trauma must fit a certain mold and presentation of sexual trauma, under the mistaken impression that anything outside that narrow window is somehow "wrong" and disrespectful or even harmful to survivors.
take, for another example, the very common trope of a traumatized character who hates touch or sex "learning" to like touch or sex as a part of their healing process. certainly that can be healing for some people; other people will never like, or want, touch or sex, because of trauma or because they just don't. the assumption that someone who doesn't want sex or doesn't like to be touched must be traumatized, must be suffering from this perceived lack, is seriously harmful -- to asexual people, to people with sensory issues around touch, and to people for whom healing from trauma means freedom to refuse sex or touch.
and there's a secondary trope, one that's slightly more thoughtful but ultimately repeats the problem -- that once someone has learned that their boundaries will be respected, they'll feel it's safe to soften those boundaries. once they feel safe refusing touch or sex, they'll feel comfortable allowing it on their own terms. but many people don't, and many people won't! many people will simply never want to be touched, and never want sex, and they are not suffering or broken or lacking because of it. the idea that proving you'll respect someone's boundaries entitles you to test those boundaries -- the paradox is obvious, and yet this is something i've seen hurt (re-traumatize) people i care for.
people are imperfect victims. people don't heal in the ways you expect. many people have positive memories of their abuse, of their abusers. many people hurt others in the course of their trauma, in ways that can't easily be unpacked in a 5k oneshot. very few narratives of trauma and recovery actually fit the ones put forward by popular children's media and romance novels -- which are the ones I most see replicated in fandom spaces, because they provide the clearest narrative and easiest catharsis, and so they're easy and soothing to reach for.
that's not necessarily a bad thing! i am not immune to goopy romance tropes. i am not immune to teary catharsis. not every fic has to grapple with ugly realities. but there's a problem when these narratives become predominant, when people think they're accurate and realistic depictions of trauma, when the truth of trauma is unpleasant and uncomfortable, and doesn't fit any single narrative, let alone one of comforting catharsis

Going back to this thing briefly
Tumblr media
When adapting this chapter into an episode Toei did not explain nor demonstrate to us what the fuck that spike was (instead they gave us Sables #378545), so we're no closer to finding out what kinda new moves Crocodile might have up his sleeve, whether that really was a Haki-infused sand spike or what
But when I was checking the melting point of sand out of curiosity (to figure out if Crocodile has a fighting chance against Akainu, which in theory he does because Akainu isn't hot enough to melt sand (in theory)), I was reminded of the fact that sand is mostly made of silica
Or, in other words, quartz. Sand is, on average, made of crystal. Of course, sand is also made of other things and other minerals (not just quartz), but if we wanted to assume Croc's DF is made of one element and one element alone, then let's just assume it's 100% silica, right
And now I can't help but to wonder now though
Could Crocodile have learned a new technique where he somehow compresses and hardens his sand so much it can turn into large, solid crystals? Or more specifically, sharp pointy stabby weapons to murder people with? 'Cause. How fucking cool would that be
Also considdering how much Crocodile likes his bling, being able to form crystals to murder people with would arguably be on-brand for him

“It seems the most logical thing in the world to believe that the natural resources of the Earth, upon which the race depends for food, clothing and shelter, should be owned collectively by the race instead of being the private property of a few social parasites.
— Ralph Chaplin
While more and more homes in Britain suffer severe flooding because of climate change, Rishi Sunak has decided that North Sea oil and gas extraction should be speeded up.
“Hundreds of new North Sea oil and gas licences to boost British energy independence and grow the economy. ”  (GOV.UK: 31/07/23)
This policy has now been confirmed and will be included in the king’s speech. More concerned with winning votes than the catastrophic effects of climate change:
“Sunak has already watered down the government’s climate targets, pushing back the deadline for selling new petrol and diesel cars and the phasing out of gas boilers, prompting furious condemnation from the automobile and energy industries.” (Guardian:05/11/23)
The excuse used by Sunak to justify his planned increase in fossil fuel production  is "to reduce emissions and boost UK energy independence."
These claims are simply not true.
Encouraging more oil and gas production does not reduce emissions - it increases them. If you expand the global market for fossil fuels then more will be used with the obvious accompanying increase in emissions. What is more, Rystad Energy, an independent advisory and business intelligence company, has stated that:
“ UK oil rigs are among the highest carbon emitters in Europe. CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere from extracting North Sea oil and gas reached 13.1MM metric tonnes in the UK in 2019, or 21kg of carbon dioxide for every barrel of oil produced – far greater than the Norwegian North Sea, which produced 4MM metric tonnes of CO2 in 2019, or 8kg of CO2 a barrel.”  (Guardian: 13/10/22)
But let us put this evidence aside for the moment and give Sunak the benefit of the doubt regarding emissions, and look at his other claim that increase extraction of gas and oil from the North Sea will “boost UK energy dependency".
Again, simply not true. It was reported only a few weeks ago that the UK EXPORTS 80% of North Sea oil which is processed abroad and then sold back to us at whatever international price makes the oil and gas industries the most profit. (CNN Business: 27/09/23)
The only way to secure energy independence is to have state ownership of our natural assets. But that is not The Tory way.
Unlike the Norwegian government, who invested their countries enormous oil and gas revenues in economic sectors across the world, creating a State owned sovereign wealth fund now worth $1.2 trillion in assets, our Tory government squandered the money, continues to allow private investors to reap the profits, and have refused to create a UK Sovereign Wealth Fund because they are ideologically opposed to public ownership.
While Sunak is forced to sell licenses for oil and gas extraction in order to secure at least some  benefits from our natural resources, the Norwegians impose  a 78% tax levy on private oil and gas companies.
“UK should match Norway’s 78% North Sea oil and gas tax, thinktank says.” (guardian:28/10/22)
But that isn’t going to happen. Instead, our ideologically driven Tory government, opposed to taxes of any kind and especially those aimed at the rich and corporate world continue to draw  headlines like these.
“Shell and BP paid zero tax on North Sea gas and oil for three years.” (Guardian: 30/10/22)
and
“North Sea oil and gas industry offered ‘get-out’ clause on windfall tax.”(Guardian:09/06/23)
The stark contrast between the way successive Tory Government’s in the UK have managed the “bonanza” of North Seal oil and gas and the way the more socialist Norwegian governments have utilised their natural resources couldn’t be more stark.

*Volume up!* This exercise demonstrates how fidget tools and stims can help distract your mind during sensory overloaded environments. While the chaos in the above video is playing, try focusing on the movements of Fidget Bloom. Do you find it helps? As the chaos gets more intense, combat it by spinning the apparatus. When you add the tactile nature of this, you can just imagine how greater the effect will be.
What makes this different compared to other stims? The variety of movements and shapes offers your mind several ways to find distractions and tune out the outside world. Plus, you can wear it when not in use, and then fidget with it when you find yourself in overstimulating situations.
Share your experience with how you handle sensory overload situations, and what you do to negate it. I'd love to hear your thoughts! Share this video, and let's get a good discussion going!

A quip about AI I was thinking about yesterday:
AI ingests human input (words, art, etc) much the same way a jet engine ingests flocks of birds, breaking everything down into a slurry of it’s former parts. And much like an engine ingesting a bird, everything falls out of the sky as a result.

Zim uses his mind a lot more than his fists when fighting, especially when he’s fighting someone physically stronger than him.
Just look at this video showing Zim’s fights against Giganto-Baby, Sergeant Hobo-678, The Planet Jackers and Sizz-Lorr.
Giganto-Baby:
Zim recognizes that Giganto-Baby is way too physically powerful to fight one on one, so he uses his environment to his advantage.
In the Giganto-Baby fight, Zim immediately starts by dropping a piece of heavy machinery on Giganto-Baby, knowing that although he can’t defeat Giganto-Baby on his own, the sheer force and weight of the collapsed machinery might be able to do it. When that doesn’t work, Zim lures Giganto-Baby through a large tangle of wires, trying to get it tangled in them. And when THAT doesn’t work, Zim goes for the amplifier, plugs Gir in, turns it up to high power and scambles Giganto-Baby’s brain like a fried egg.
Sergeant Hobo-678:
In the fight against Sergeant Hobo-678, Zim plays defence, focusing on dodging Sergeant Hobo-678’s attacks while he hacks his own gauntlets to start draining power from the Sergeant. Once he starts draining power, Zim continues to dodge while he waits for the draining to finish.
When Sergeant Hobo-678 grabs Zim and is about to end the fight, Zim plays dumb and intentionally distracts him with the “perhaps you’ve trained me too well” line, giving Zim enough time to drain enough energy to knock Sergeant Hobo-678 out of the ring in one swift punch to the face.
Planet Jackers:
First getting the Planet Jacker’s attention by banging on the ship, Zim loses the first fight quickly, being sent hurtling through space with his PAK legs torn off, but he comes up with a plan immediately after Gir rescues him.
Zim starts cutting open the planetary shell with his Voot Cruiser and gets ready to distract the Planet Jackers, donning armour for this fight specifically because HE WANTS to be beaten up. He plays the dumb and insane act, knowing that the Planet Jacker would focus on beating up the “pathetic Irken that’s way out of his league” and not notice the Voot cutting open the dome. And he continues to keep up that act as he’s being beat to a pulp, acting way more egotistical than he actually is and acting like HE’S the real one winning the fight, making him seem like even less of a threat and more of an annoyance.
Also you can see some really fast learning from Gir, as the first time Zim tells Gir to catch him with the Voot, Gir doesn’t open the cockpit, while on the second attempt Gir remembers to open the cockpit and catches Zim flawlessly.
Sizz-Lorr:
When Sizz-Lorr grabs onto Zim’s cab, Zim first tries to shake him off, then runs him through a sign when that proves to be ineffective, which almost knocks Sizz-Lorr off. Then, when Sizz-Lorr grabs him, Zim uses his legs to steer and flies straight towards a massive billboard in a last ditch effort to get Sizz-Lorr off of him.
He basically plays a game of chicken with Sizz-Lorr. If he hangs on, he’ll hit the sign, but if he lets go, he’ll lose Zim. It’s either go back empty handed or both Zim and Sizz-Lorr fall back down to Foodcourtia in a flaming wreck.
Sizz-Lorr ends up letting go of Zim at the last minute, hits the billboard and falls back down to Foodcourtia (but not in a flaming wreck), while Zim falls onto the ship’s steering wheel and just barely avoids the billboard, escaping.
Unlike the other examples, this isn’t a plan. This is a gamble with Zim’s own life on the line, and he just barely scapes by. If Sizz-Lorr had held on for just a tiny bit longer, Zim’s gamble would have failed and both of them would have hit the billboard, which would have either killed them outright or forced them to go through the Foodening while heavily injured.
Really goes to show how feared and powerful Sizz-Lorr is that the only way Zim could beat him was with a desperate gamble that he came up with on the spot.
