Frozen Moments
Bruce Wayne x fem!reader
wc: 1,400
Summary: you are awarded a scholarship for you to pursue your masters degree.
warnings: non really just light language, and a bit of an age gap! pic from pinterest!
this is for all my teachers and my fellow college students studying to be a teacher. this is him praising us basically! happy reading 🫶
——————————————————————
Your black cocktail gown, lined with sequins, shimmered under the lights of Gotham U’s over-the-top banquet hall. The room buzzed with laughter—faculty, classmates, donors, and Gotham’s elite mingled in animated conversations. With a champagne flute in one hand and your clutch in the other, you observed the crowd. You watched how they talked, how they moved, and how they stood, mentally preparing yourself to slip into their world when you decided to engage.
You take a seat at your assigned table, and beside you sits your mentor, the woman who had been by your side since your freshman year of undergrad. She had guided you through countless hardships and was the one who nominated you for the B.W.E. scholarship. As you glance over her shoulder, your eyes land on him. You never expected to see him out in the wild, yet there he was—Bruce Wayne, larger than life.
Bruce looked striking, his impeccably tailored suit fitting him perfectly, as if crafted solely for his frame. He stood tall, towering over the man he was conversing with, commanding the space around him effortlessly. You couldn’t help but stare, frozen like a deer in headlights, unable to tear your eyes away. He hadn’t noticed you yet—but maybe in a few moments, when he turned his head, he would.
The piano music halts softly and everyone takes a seat in their respective areas, Bruce strides into the stage to the podium. “good evening ladies and gentlemen.”
“good evening”, replies the crowd.
“Thank you all for coming out tonight to celebrate our wonderful scholars.” The voice echoed across the banquet hall, drawing everyone’s attention to the podium. Bruce Wayne stood confidently at the center of the stage, his presence commanding as he glanced over the crowd. He paused for a moment, offering a small, charismatic smile before continuing, “These young men and women have inspired us all at Wayne Enterprises, and it’s very clear that it’s time for us to give back.”
As he spoke, his hand rested casually on the podium, his gaze sweeping the room. He shifted his weight slightly, the tailored fabric of his suit catching the light. You could see the ease with which he held the audience’s attention, his deep voice resonating in the space. Every now and then, his eyes lingered on different parts of the crowd, making fleeting, deliberate eye contact with the attendees. There was an energy in the room, a quiet intensity as everyone hung on his every word.
You couldn’t tear your eyes away from him. His demeanor drew you in, commanding your attention without effort, holding you captive in a way you hadn’t expected. The words of his speech barely registered as you found yourself caught in the pull of his deep blue eyes. And then you heard your name. Your trance shattered, replaced by a rush of adrenaline. You swiftly rose from your chair, heart pounding as you made your way to the stage. Anxiety, excitement, and humility washed over you all at once, your legs feeling unsteady beneath you as you faced the sea of Gotham’s elite. The crowd seemed impossibly refined, every face turned toward you as you approached Bruce Wayne.
“Ms. L/N, you have been awarded the B.W.E. Scholarship, in the amount of one hundred thousand dollars,” Bruce Wayne announces, his voice carrying effortlessly through the room. As he hands you the plaque, your jaw drops in disbelief. Bruce’s lips tug into a small, knowing smile as he offers his hand for a handshake.A cameraman steps forward, gesturing for both you and Bruce to face the camera. Still in shock, you comply, managing to plant a wide, gracious smile on your face. Bruce’s arm wraps gently around your waist, steadying you as the camera flashes.“Congratulations, Ms. L/N,” he says warmly, clapping his hands as he takes a step back. The crowd erupts in applause and cheers, the sound almost overwhelming as you make your way down the stairs, still clutching the plaque, your heart racing. You return to your table, the applause ringing in your ears, barely able to process what just happened.
The night carries on, and you find yourself alone in the quad sitting in a garden chair admiring your new plaque. a voice rings behind you,
“Hello, Y/N.”
You jump, clutching your chest at the sudden sound of his voice. “Holy shit—” you stammer, scrambling to recover. “I’m sorry, Mr. Wayne. Sorry, excuse me, you just startled me.”
He chuckles softly at your flustered reaction. “It’s alright, I know teachers have potty mouths.”
You can’t help but smile, relieved by his lightheartedness. He takes a seat beside you, and you’re struck by how effortlessly handsome he is. His hair is neatly combed back, and the subtle scent of Versace cologne mixed with fresh laundry detergent lingers in the air.
“I wanted to personally congratulate you,” he says, turning his full attention to you. “I have to admit, I’ve had my eye on you for a while. When I read your philosophy paper, I knew you deserved this more than anyone else.”
you blush, “oh, you read that? it was just something so i could pass the class.”
“i agreed with it, it was amazing. i agree with pushing boundaries in education, and hell Gotham needs someone like you”, he remarks.
“you’ve got a point.”
“good so we agree”, his smile illuminates his face, “wanna ditch this?”, he asks nodding his head to the parking lot. you laugh and nod. he stands taking your hand in his. you two make your way to the parking lot, “did you drive?”, he asks.
“no, i took an uber didn’t know how drunk i’d get tonight.”
“Perfect,” he says with a small smile, walking over to his sleek sports car. He opens the passenger door for you, extending his hand to help you in. Once you’re settled comfortably in the plush seat, he gently shuts the door before jogging around to the driver’s side. The soft purr of the engine starts as he slides in beside you, effortlessly in control of the wheel.
The sleek car pulls up in front of a small, charming ice cream shop nestled between towering Gotham buildings. You glance at Bruce, surprised by the choice, but his playful smile puts you at ease.
“You like ice cream, right?” he asks, already stepping out of the car and opening your door for you.
The shop is warm and cozy, with retro decor and the sweet smell of waffle cones in the air. You can hear the gentle hum of the freezer and the chatter of a few late-night customers. The glass display is filled with colorful scoops of every flavor you could imagine. Behind the counter, an older woman greets Bruce like an old friend.
“Bruce! It’s been a while! The usual?” she asks with a wink.
“And something for the lady,” Bruce adds, turning to you.
You scan the choices, feeling a bit out of place, but the warmth of the shop and Bruce’s casual demeanor make you smile. “Mint chocolate chip,” you say after a moment, trying to mask the butterflies in your stomach.
As you both sit down in a booth by the window, the soft glow of the streetlights outside adds to the comfortable ambiance. Bruce takes a spoonful of his ice cream and leans back, his relaxed posture a contrast to the serious man you’d seen earlier.
“I figured you could use something a little more… normal after tonight,” he says with a small grin, watching you as you take your first bite. The cool sweetness melts in your mouth, and for the first time that evening, you feel grounded, sharing a simple moment with Gotham’s most eligible billionaire. “and because i know you’re thinking about it, you don’t have to pay me back.”
“Mr. Way-“
“Bruce”, he smiles.
“Bruce, are you a mind reader”, he smirks before taking another mouthful of his ice cream.
you two chat for a while, you learn new things about him, and you explain your choice in pursuing your education degree. he praises you for your courage and kindness.
he arrives to your apartment, he even walks you to your door, “i had a great night Mr.- Bruce”, you speak before unlocking your door with your keys.
“i did too, here’s my number, i hope we can do this again sometime”, he smiles handing you a sticky note. you smile taking it out of his hand before waving him goodnight
“oh crap your jacket!”, you attempt to run after him.
“keep it, i’ll come get it next time”, you smile biting your lower lip before walking into your apartment.

A Simple Favour
Pairing: Bruce Wayne X Reader
Word Count: 1.5k+
Rating: PG
Summary: This is the story of a budding relationship between a man and a woman. A woman who owes a very dangerous man a very, very big favour.
Warnings: Nothing so far!
Gotham city. One of the biggest cities in the world. Every second a million different things were happening. Both good and bad. You? You’re almost sprinting down the street as your hand is gripping your hat to keep it on your head.
You surely look a mess, with your fly away hairs, the steady trickle of sweat running down your forehead and your mislaid clothes. Yet, the second you run into the cafe, his eyes light up. The corners of his mouth turn up into a smile as he stands up from the small table, waving you over.
“I’m so sorry I’m late, Bruce. You know how hectic work can be.” You’re in the middle of hurriedly apologising when he places his hand on your shoulder.
“Don’t worry, I wasn’t waiting long.”
You let out a breath, taking a second to gather yourself as you sit in the seat he held out for you. Sitting back down, he pours you a glass of water.
“Was it Richard again?”
“Yep,” your words sound more like a groan. “I don’t know what he has against me, it’s like he has a vendetta or something.”
Bruce chuckles, sipping at his own glass. The two of you had met around a year ago at a fundraiser. You’d been loitering around the buffet table when he walked in. You hadn’t been paying attention as everyone’s eyes were drawn to the door. You did, however, hear the murmurs going around the room.
“Gosh, Bruce Wayne with another woman! Will he ever settle down?”
“Late, as always.”
“You know, I heard he’s going broke! Apparently he gives too much away to charity.”
You’d never seen The Bruce Wayne before but he wasn’t difficult to pick out from the crowd. What, with two Russian models hanging off his arms and a cocky, know it all, smirk plastered on his face, you would’ve recognised him from 100 miles away.
You wish you could say he glanced into your eyes and you instantly knew he was not what he seemed. That he was putting on a playboy persona. But, he didn’t. In fact, he didn’t glance your way once, not even when he came over to grab something from the table. It was like you didn’t exist.
Luckily for you, these gatherings had never been your thing. You’d come and stayed for an appropriate amount of time, so it was soon after that you were heading for the exit.
Saying a quick goodbye to your coworkers, you left through the grand doors. Only, you were halfway down the grand steps when you realised you’d left your purse at the buffet. You resist the urge to smack yourself in the face, how could you be so forgetful?
Turning around, you were about to run up the steps when you ran directly into something.
Well, someone.
You felt your breath catch in your throat, as your eye trailed up the wide chest to the blue eyes staring down at you.
Realising it was Bruce Wayne, you jump back and instantly start to apologise. Now was not the time to get on the bad side of Gotham’s most powerful man!
“I’m so so sorry, I should’ve been looking where I was going. But I left my purse in there and was so caught up in my th-“
In your rushed words, you’d missed the twitching of Bruce’s lips.
“Don’t worry, in all honesty it was my fault. I apologise.”
His words catch you off guard. Wasn’t he supposed to be some obnoxious prick?
Blinking a few times, you direct your eyes down to your shoes. “I-It’s okay.”
There’s a moment of silence but for some reason, it doesn’t feel awkward.
“So, I’ve been to a lot of these things and have never run into you before.” He says, stepping back slightly.
“Ah yes, I actually moved here last week. I’m from New York but got the opportunity to come work here for Mr Dwight Halbert.”
Bruce hums. “Well, I better be going but I hope you settle in well.”
You can’t stop the disappointment from flooding your chest. This is ridiculous, you’ve only just met the guy! So what if he had beautiful eyes? And the most sculptured body you’d ever seen? And a voice that felt like honey?
“Oh, okay. Have a good night Mister Wayne.” You shyly smile, looking away as he turns around and heads down the stairs.
He just gets to the bottom when he faces you one last time. “I hope to be seeing more of you.”
His words, although simple, leave a smile on your face for days to come. At least you know how he gets all the European models.
“Y’know, I could totally get him fired.” Bruce says, hiding his smile behind his mug. His words bring you back to the current time, the cafe, your tardiness.
“If only I didn’t have a moral code.” You sigh, shaking your head.
Bruce chuckles, handing you a menu.
Your ‘lunch date’ went well, as usual. After meeting him at the fundraiser, you found yourself randomly bumping into him. Three bus stops, two trains and six aisles later. Places he usually never goes to, but you don’t need to know that. Soon after, he asked you to lunch. Casual, of course.
You’d been meeting up on a weekly basis since.
You both order your food and get to chatting. At this point, you feel like you know everything there is to know about Bruce Wayne. Yet, you feel like you’re only scraping the surface. Looking into those eyes, you just knew that there was something underneath. Something that very few people got to see.
You’d be lying if you said you didn’t have a tintsy, tiny, crush on the man. What, with those eyes, muscles and big strong arms? He could be a male model. Then there’s the way his eyes crinkle up when he smiles at you. How he gently lays his hand on your back in a crowd, a tiny gesture of public intimacy that makes you feel warm and safe. The way your name rolls off his tongue, like it was made just for him to speak.
Okay, maybe you’re totally whipped for him.
You try to stop the tug on your heart as you realise the undeniable truth. He certainly doesn’t like you like that. He merely sees you as a close friend. I mean, after six months of casual lunch meets, he surely would’ve said something if he wanted something more. Right? (models lol)
Lunch comes to an end far too quickly and you’re left already yearning for the next chance you get to see him. Glancing into your handbag, you reach for your purse. That isn’t there.
“Ah shit,” you sigh, closing your eyes in frustration. “I left my purse at work.”
“That’s okay,” Bruce smiles. “I’ll pay.”
You go to resist but he’s already standing up. “But that means you owe me a favour.”
You suck in a breath as you instantly picture that moment from all those years ago. The green hair, purple suit, manic laughter and the inarguable fear you felt. A shiver runs down your spine as your face drops. For a second, you go white as a sheet. However, you quickly recover. The moment finishes as soon as it starts, as you quickly lift your lips up into a smile. It’s so brief that any normal person would’ve missed it. But not Bruce.
His eyebrows furrow in worry, as he’s struck off guard. He goes to comfort you when you suddenly stand from your seat.
“T-Thank you Bruce.” You stumble over your first few words but regain your composure swiftly. “I’ll shout lunch next time.”
“Of course.”
That’s another thing you like about Bruce. He never makes you feel like less when it comes to money (or anything, really). The first time you met for lunch he tried to pay on your behalf but you denied him, insisting that you were equals and therefore, you could pay for your own meal. He caught on quickly and has happily split the bill with you ever since. You often found yourself forgetting just how loaded he is. He never used his money in a bragging type way and if it weren’t for the expensive cars or luxurious suits, you wouldn’t even know he was the richest man in Gotham.
After paying the bill, you and Bruce say your goodbye and head off in different directions. It was always bitter when you were forced to part ways but what else could you do? It’s not like you were his girlfriend. You couldn’t just meet him at Wayne Manor and spend the night together.
You’re pulled from your upsetting thoughts when you receive a phone call from an anonymous number. Letting out a quick sign, you pick the phone up and go to speak, when you hear it.
“Hello lovely.”
You’d recognise that voice anywhere.
Stopping your hand from shaking too much, you take in a breath, and try to calm yourself down.
“What? Cat got your tongue?” The question is followed by laughter. A laugh much too dramatic for such a simple joke. If it can even be called that.
“I do have the right number, don’t I?”
You feel a shiver with each syllable.
“Yes.” You finally get your voice back and reply. “Are you finally using your favour, Joker?”

---------------------------
Y/n POV
The world was falling apart slowly as war began to spread across Europe. Most of the men who were above 16 years old joined the military, to fight for our country. I joined the military as well as a 20 year old woman, to help and take care of our men as a nurse.
“This is France.” Mrs Dawson said as she pointed at the map, that was hanging against the wall. “Some of you will go there and help our forces at the front lines, others stay here.” Most girls got excited as they heard about going to France, going to our troops. “We all move to the military base tomorrow morning, pack light because you don’t need anything else than your medical supplies at the front lines.” With that she ended her speech and we all went back to our rooms, getting ready for tomorrow.
——The next day——
It was six in the morning when they woke us up. “Let’s go ladies, time is ticking.” We all got up and got ready. “I’m so excited, I hope I’ll get picked for France.” My best friend said as she put some makeup on. “There is a war going on, you know that right?” She nodded and flashed me a smile through the mirror. “Y/n, there are the real men, not those….you know from town.” I rolled my eyes and smoothed my dress. “Right….just hurry up, I don’t want to be late.”
The train ride was quiet as everyone was nervous. “Please let them be handsome.” One of my new friends said. “Of course they are, all RAF pilots are good looking and respectful men.” A small discussion started between a few ladies. “Y/n needs a man.” My best friend said with a giggle. “No I don’t, I’m not here to find a man.” She gave me a look and shrugged me off. “Everyone is looking for a man…”
After a long travel day we arrived at the military base from the RAF. “Ladies, I want you all to behave and show your best side as captain Morty will guide us to our rooms.” Mrs Dawson said as captain Morty smiled at us. “Yes mrs Dawson.” We all said in chorus. She nodded at the captain and he guided us to our rooms as we passed through a few hangars.
Jack POV
“Nurses will be joining us.” Danny said as he joined us at the hangar. “Really?” Josh a new mechanic said as he looked up from his work. “Yes, they just arrived.” The mechanics started to whistle as they heard the new from Danny. “Calm down, they are just nurses.” Rafe said with a grin on his face, finding it amusing how the mechanics reacted to the news. “He’s right, they are here to do their job, so let’s focus on ours.” Tom our squad commander said as he was reading a book. “Of course…” they mumbled as they went back to their work.
The whole atmosphere between the mechanics was different than usual, It’s causing a bit of commotion between everyone. “Do you think we have a chance?” Josh asked As he was cleaning his work spot. “Honestly no, if they are looking for a man, they want those ground soldiers.” Danny said as he stood up, brushing off his pants. “Really? Not even the pilots?” Josh looked a bit disappointed at Danny, who just shook his head. “Josh, he’s joking around, of course we have a chance. Women like every man that is serving in the military at the moment.” Rafe said with an amusing smile on his face, as his best friend was joking around with the mechanics.
We all got send off early to our beds as we all needed those extra hours of sleep. “I heard it’s not going well for the French.” Danny quietly said as we were all lying in our bunk beds. “Do you think we are going there?” He popped his head up and leaned over the edge to look down at his friend Rafe, who was lying on his back, his arms crossed behind his head. “Maybe…” he answered, Danny nodded and laid back in his bed. “Why are you thinking about that?” I asked him. “Don’t know, I heard one of the mechanics talking about it this morning.” I hummed and rolled over to my left side, facing the wall. “We’ll see how it goes…”
Y/n POV
The girls were excited as we saw a few mechanics and pilots roaming around in one of the hangars. “They are all so handsome.” One said as we were getting ready to go to bed. “I know…” my best friend said. I smiled and crawled into the bed. “I can’t wait to start tomorrow.” We all giggled about it, gossiping about them and talking about our future. After some time we turned the light off and laid down in our own beds. “We should get some sleep, we all need to look good in the morning.” Someone said as a few hummed and agreed. I silently nodded and turned around, facing the wall. “We’ll see how it goes…”
We all woken up by a bell going off, it was Mrs Dawson. “Ladies, it’s time to get ready.” Some of us groaned, some of us stood up without saying a word. I slowly turned around and moved the blanket away. “Come on, get up.” Mrs Dawson said as a few were still lying in their beds. “You all have 10 minutes to get ready.” She disappeared from our shared room and we all began our morning routine.
“This is the work station for you ladies.” Caption Morty said as we walked into a room, looking like a small hospital. “Our men will stop by to get their medical check ups before leaving for their missions.” We all looked around the room. “Anymore questions? If not, Mrs Dawson has the schedules from all the groups that are in this facility and she also has the time schedules for the canteen. Ladies I wish you all the best.” He gave Mrs Dawson a nod and left us alone, she started to show us the schedules and rules for our new adventure here at the RAF military base.
Jack POV
Danny went for a walk and came back with a smile on his face. “What happened to you?” Rafe asked as Danny joined us at the table. “I saw them.” Tom sighed and continued to eat his breakfast. “Is that why you went for a walk?” Danny smiles and digs into his breakfast. “Danny come on…” Rafe said annoyingly. “I only passed by, they were with captain Morty.” I shook my head and Tom shot me a well knowing glare. “I think we should leave them be, they can’t have us spying on them as well. The mechanics are already losing their minds.” Rafe pointed at me, agreeing what I just said. “See, you need to stop Walker, we are here to fight for our country. Not for the ladies…” Danny nodded, knowing what we meant. “Yeah…you’re right.” Rafe gave him a gently pat on his shoulder. “It’s all good brother.”

rare vent incoming but I've had a discouraging couple of days--
been having a lot of trouble lately with this general overarching capital-F Fandom view I've seen--that one shot fics are unmemorable; one-dimensional; "junk food"; low-effort; lacking in depth; inherently less complex, immersive, satisfying, conducive to character development, etc. than multi-chaptered fics. The idea that they're not even worth reading.
It's...a bummer and a half to see and contend with. Especially in conjunction with the consume-consume-consume mindset that's sprung up in capital-F Fandom. One shots are a complicated craft with amazing potential, and it's disheartening that this isn't always recognized.
One shot writers, I see you <3

Somebody saaaaaaaaave meeeeeeeee! I had to do it to em.
What is gonna happen next?! I'm excited.
Believer
Hi y’all! Posting this but I will be editing over time. 🥰 i hope y’all enjoy this though. This one was a little bit more tough.
**I do not give anyone permission to repost or copy my work!!!
Warnings 18+: Cursing , Mentions of being Burned , Dying , (please tell me if I’ve missed any)
Description: Cardierre has a close encounter with Death.
Pairing: Henry Cavill (Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent) x Cardierre James (Nicki Minaj) — Special Guest : Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne)
Word Count:
The Planet’s Visitor
The sound of a cork being popped filled the air along with the squeal and laughter of women. Bubbly champagne overflowed the side of the expensive Armand de Brignac bottle. Steve then began to fill up everyone’s flute. Clark and Cardi stood close to one another as Perry was the last one to have his glass filled.
Small conversation and chatter circulated the room until the sound of Perry clinking quieted the room. ‘May I have your attention please ladies and gentlemen,’ the room grew quiet and all of the attention was on their boss. ‘First and foremost— I would like to Welcome Clark back. Even though… we don’t really know how this was possible but, we are glad to have you back.’
Everyone turned their gazes towards Clark, raising their glasses towards the ceiling gently, ‘Welcome back, Clark!’ They all chimed it, some voices on time and others late.
Perry then turned his attention towards Cardierre who had her hand resting on her hip. She seem tired from the days work and he’d be sure to mention how hard working she truly was in his speech. ‘As all of you may know… recently, Cardierre had broke a record of being the most read reporter in the United States for her article: Return of the Red Cape. If you have read it, you know how impressive it was. It sure did have me at the edge of my seat. Cardierre, this is to you. Congratulations on this epic record! I— along with the rest of the Daily Planet— are very proud to have you with us.’
Cardi wasn’t that great with things like this. But it sure did feel nice to get that recognition from her boss. ‘Thank you all. I’m grateful to have such a supportive team to help me craft such an important article. This story meant everything to me… especially since I felt like I was about to die.’ She chuckled nervously, scratching the back of her head. The room filled with low laughter.
The tall male glanced down at her through his glasses. He wouldn’t dare harm her.
‘Anyway, I would like to thank you Perry for giving me the opportunity to allow me to put my experience and feelings on paper for the world to see,’ she lifted her flute with a smile, ‘To You Perry. To the Planet. Figurative and literally!’ The room burst with laughter before everyone placed their glasses between their lips and sipped at their champagne.
She had walked back over to her desk to see a beautiful arrangement of roses sitting atop it. Shaped in a full heart, the pedals looked so soft to the touch.
Cardi smiled softly, picking up the small fancy card. ‘Wonder who this is from?’ The card read: Congratulations on your groundbreaking success. May more success welcome you within open arms. B.
She then instantly knew exactly who sent these her way.
‘Looks like you have an secret admirer!’ Clark said, walking over and carefully leaned against her desk. ‘They look pricy!’
‘Very.’
A familiar voice had finally filled the air, ‘Ah! There’s my girl! Cardi!’
She turned around to see a man approaching them. Broad shoulders, tall frame. His sleeves were rolled up his forearms. He wore a dress shirt and a simple dark gray vest over the shirt, with dark gray slacks and shiny dress shoes. His arms were open, as if he were waiting for a hug. He was unrecognizable from a human eye. But once she grew closer, a grin curled on his lips.
‘Bruce?’ She was hesitant at first, but once she was sure that it was him, ‘BRUCE!’ She rushed towards her friend, damn near leaping into his arms. Effortlessly, he wrapped his arms around her waist and spun her around as the both laughed with glee. Once he’d placed her on her feet, she braced herself, finding her footing so she wouldn’t fall over from her dizziness. ‘Whoa.’ He grabbed her arms, keeping her still for a moment. ‘You alright?!’ He chuckled. ‘I am! Gosh! It’s been ages my friend! How are you?’
Bruce gave her a smile, it was like he didn’t want to answer her question… or didn’t know where to even begin. But Clark didn’t only save innocent lives… he saved conversations too. Bruce looked up at Clark who was approaching the two of them.
‘Mr. Wayne.’ Clark adjusted his glasses and gave him a nod.
‘How many times have I told you? Call me Bruce, Clark.’
Cardi was confused… out of this world. Her eyebrows tugged into one. Looking from Bruce to Clark and from Clark to Bruce. ‘Wait, you two know one another?!’
A lot better than she could even imagine.
‘Uh—‘ Clark took in a deep breath, trying to figure out how to put it in the right words. ‘We’ve… had to work together before.’
‘Yes. Confidential of course but— yes.’
‘Oh.’ Cardierre said, her eyebrows risen from surprise. ‘Small world I suppose.’
It grew quiet between the three of them for a moment. But the air was tense. So thick, it could easily be cut with a butter knife.
The woman wasn’t dumb. Graduating at top 10 of her class at Duke University, it was very easy to pick up secretive behavior. There was something they weren’t telling her.
The moment was broken once Perry called out for Clark to come and join him and their colleagues on a conversation. ‘Excuse me. Nice to see you… Bruce.’ Holding out his large hand, Bruce did not hesitate to pull out his hand, give it a firm grip and a simple shake. ‘Good to see you too, Clark.’ Bruce gave him a nod before Clark turned away.
The large male and female watched him walk away until Cardierre spoke up. ‘What are you doing here? Finally moving out of Gotham?’ It was joke. She knew her friend would never move away from that God forsaken place. She really couldn’t say she blamed him either. His business was there… he was trying to repair it… or at least help. But she’d mentioned it before, that place was way past helping. Way past saving.
Bruce chuckled at her joke, folding his arms over his chest, ‘I’m here on business. You forget Wayne Enterprise is Global.’
‘Nope,’ she smirked, ‘Never forgot. But why are you… here?’
Bruce paused for a second, swallowing his spit. He was conjuring up a lie. And she knew her friend long enough to notice. ‘To bring you flowers…’
She stared up at him, her lips in a slight curve to distinguish that she was smiling, but telling him that she knew he was full of shit. ‘Mmmmhmm.’
‘What?’
Cardi rolled her eyes and huffed, ‘Nothing. Just you haven’t changed… and—‘ she took a step forward, poking him in his chest, ‘You’re still a terrible liar.’ Turning swiftly on her toes, she walked back to her desk and gathered her things. ‘How is Harvey?’
‘Mmm…’ Bruce had walked behind her, his hands deep in his pockets as he looked up at the ceiling to think. ‘Uh… well— if you must know. He got hurt pretty bad.’
She gasped, turning halfway to face him. Her face froze in horror with her lips parted slightly, and her eyes enlarged. ‘What happened?! Is he alright?!’
‘Oh. He’s fine. A little too fine I suppose. He’s become one of Gotham’s renowned villains.’
Letting out a exhausted sigh, she folded her arms across her chest. ‘Poor Harvey. He had so much ambition… I guess a little bit too much.’ She scuffed and turned around, continuing on her mission to pack her things, ‘And the Batman? What’s he been up to these days?’
Bruce smirked, ‘I dunno. I don’t stay out late to find out for myself.’
Raising a brow as she smirked, throwing her purse over her shoulder and then picking up her flowers, ‘Good… last thing I need to hear is that one of my close friends got his spine split in half by a vigilante that swore to protect the innocent.’ Bruce chuckled at remark and shook his head. She turned around and placed them in his arms. ‘Walk me to my car?’
‘Sure.’ He smiled.
The young woman waved her hand, ‘Goodnight everyone! I will see you all in the mornin’!’
Everyone lifted their heads from the huddle they were in and waved their hands as well. ‘Bye, Cardi!’ They all said in sync.
***
On the way to her car, the two did their best to catch up. Bruce was a lot more closed off than she remembered and Cardi’s life consisted of working nonstop. She didn’t even believe in vacations… her saying “I’ll rest when I’m dead.” And pretty soon, she’ll realize she was taking life for granted.
‘Thank you.’ She took the soft pink flowers out of Bruce’s arms and placed them in the backseat. She then shut the door and turned around to see her friend. He had grown up— so much… and well might she add. The two stared at one another for a moment longer before she spoke, ‘I hope you have been being safe in Gotham. It just seems like the world is becoming a bad place everyday. You’re my friend, Bruce. And I want the best for you. Why don’t you just move here? Instead.’
Bruce sighed and shook his head, ‘You know I can’t do that.’ He didn’t even have to explain… because she already knew why.
‘I know.’ She gave him a gentle smile, ‘I was just trying to see if you’d change your mind. Still pretty headstrong.’ The both of them laughed softly before it grew quiet again. ‘Be good, Bruce.’ She reached up and rubbed her knuckles on his stubbly jaw before leaning up and placing a kiss on his cheek. She then got in her car, started it up and left him in that very same spot.
***
On the way home, she was in stand still traffic. This made her want to move out of the city in the first place. But since she worked here, leaving this place was always damn near impossible.
Relieved, she made it to the light right before she had to get on the interstate. But something had captured her attention. Bright flames had glowed in an apartment building, and a few people began to gather around. Quickly pulling over to the side and getting out her car, she rushed towards the group of people. The fire began to grow wilder, with the sounds of screaming and frightened people filled the air.
She looked around, noticing there were a few people on the phone with 911. But her attention was captured by a screaming man who was being dragged out by other men. ‘MY DAUGHTER! MY DAUGHTER IS IN THERE!’ He was in distress. Coughing to death. He had no energy to fight but all his energy went towards the shouting for his child.
This stirred up a feeling inside Cardi that she had never felt. The feeling to protect, even if it meant risking her life. After all, if it was her child in a burning building, and Superman was no where to be found, she would hope someone stepped up to be a hero for her.
Rushing over to the 3 men who were in coughing fits, she asked— ‘sir! What floor is your daughter on?! Where can I find her?!’ She had to yell over the sound of burning and collapsing debris.
‘2nd… floor.’ He wheezed. ‘Please… my baby… she’s all… I have.’
Taking in a deep breath, she looked up at the building. The flames were moving faster than she could have imagined. She had to move quickly.
Quickly, Cardi tied up her hair and kicked off her heels. She snatched off her blazer and tossed it on the ground. Suddenly, she heard the blaring of sirens rushing around the corner. The police, fire fighters and paramedics. She had to move before she had no chance to go. The crowd called out behind her as she raced inside.
Hey! Hey! What are you doing?!
Oh my god!
She’s going to die in there!
Stepping inside, she immediately regretted her decision. As soon as that smoke hit her lungs, she coughed as if her lungs were clawing their way out of her throat. It burned to breathe, but she had to keep pushing.
The floor was warm, not hot enough to burn her feet but hot enough to have her move quickly.
The stairs hadn’t fallen through yet, but they looked like they were on the verge. So even with her cough, Cardi rushed up that flight of stairs to get to the second floor.
When she made it, she thought all was lost. The 3rd floor had already fallen through and the flames are as tall as the ceiling. Suddenly, she heard whimpering. ‘Papa!? Where are you papa?!’ Through the wall. A shroud of hope covered her. She looked at the door that was partially blocked by burning debris. She wouldn’t be able to make it through there. But the wall was already burning and coming apart. ‘WAIT A MINUTE HONEY! IM GOING TO GET YOU OUT OF THERE!’ She yelled before she broke out into another fit of coughs.
Looking around, Cardi tried to find anything durable enough to break down this wall. There was a metal pipe laying on the ground. ‘This should work.’ And as soon as she picked it up, the metal singed her palms. Letting out a pained hiss, ‘AH!’ She quickly dropped it and backed away. She looked down at her hands, pink and burned. ‘Dammit.’ She cursed herself. She had to think quickly, so she unbuttoned her shirt, and wrapped it around the metal for protection. She then painfully picked up that metal pipe and started beating a hole into the wall.
Boom! Crash! Is all she could hear. She stopped for a second, terrified of the ceiling had finally caved in on the child. ‘HELLO!? SWEET HEART ARE YOU THERE?!’ No answer. Cardi’s eyes filled with tears. ‘No, no-no-no. Uh uh.’ She started beating faster, pushing through as hard as she could as her coughing became unbearable by the second.
Finally, she squeezed herself into the hole she created. Cutting, scraping, and burning her flesh as she did so. ‘Urrrrrggghhh!’ She groaned out in pain. And once through, she saw the child sitting in the corner of her bedroom. It was untouched by the fire. She held a little plush kitty towards her chest. She was safe.
‘Oh baby girl…’ Cardi gushed as she coughed. Limping in pain and exhaustion, she made her way to the child. ‘I’m a friend of daddy’s OK? I’ve come to get you out of here alright? What is your name?’
The girl looked at her with swollen teary eyes. She seem to have been crying forever, and clearly — it was hard for her to breathe too. ‘Mya…’
‘Oh…’ Cardi sighed softly, ‘That’s…’ she sighed again, ‘Such a pretty … name.’ She looked around for a second, and noticed the window. She quickly stood up and rushed over towards it and pushed it open. ‘Mya…’ she breathe heavily before coughing. ‘We have to get out of here…come.’ Opening her arms, the child didn’t hesitate to crawl into the unfamiliar woman’s arms.
Finding a piece of cloth, she used it to twist the door knob painfully. And when she did, the hall way was blocked off in blazing debris. This must’ve been what she heard outside her door. She coughed some more as the little girl whined, worriedly. ‘Shhh, it’s OK.’ Cardi whispered before quickly closing the door.
‘Shit.’ She cursed and walked over to the window to try and her fresh air. But to no avail. The air wasn’t circulating fast enough and the longer they stayed, the harder it became to breathe.
‘We’re going to die aren’t we?’ The child asked.
Cardi looked at her with narrowed eyes, ‘No… no… we don’t do that… we are— strong… we can… we can do this.’ She fought as she felt herself losing her own consciousness. Her chest burned as she did her best to push down her coughing, but it just felt soothing to do so.
Crash! The apartment shook beneath their feet. The woman and the child looked at the door. The floor in the hallway must’ve finally gave way. The little girl whimpered, her bottom lip trembling as she looked at the woman for hope.
Wheezing, Cardi placed her burned, stinging palm on the girl’s smoke covered cheek. ‘Don’t— worry. We will figure out a plan.’ Suddenly, loud cracking filled the poisoned air. She looked up to see ceiling, cracking. Quickly. Right before the ceiling finally crumbled, Cardi snatched little Mya up with all the strength she had left in her and dashed to the corner of the room, sitting right beneath the window.
Mya screamed in fear as they watched the floor eat the heavy debris covered in flames. ‘Shhhh… shhh. It’s… OK.’ She stroked the child’s head sweetly. Cardi watched that hole in the floor. Glowing like the fiery pits of hell. She wasn’t the type to give up… but she was tired. Literally burnt out. Never would she have imagined though, she’d die this way.
Holding the small girl in her lap as Cardi gained closure of her fate, she whispered, ‘How… old are you?’
The little girl wheezed… hesitating to answer as her weakness got the best to her too. ‘… 4…’
‘Oh…’ she scoffed weakly, ‘You are… the bravest… 4 year old… I’ve ever…’ she was struggling. She was so tired. ‘Sleep.. so… sleepy.’ And finally… letting the idea of sleep, welcome her with open arms.
But, only for a short moment.
She didn’t feel herself being lifted off of the ground, nor did she really have the strength to open her eyes all the way.
Through blurry eyes, she saw red and blue. Wheezing— she couldn’t say much. Too weak to even mouth anything… she just laid there almost lifeless in his arms.
Hearing the cheers of people around them, chanting his name as he carried both her and the little girl towards the stretchers. They had placed oxygen masks over their noses. The child was interacting well with her father… but Cardi— was barely holding up. Finally, opening her eyes a little bit more, she was able to see his face. They were tired and still burned as if someone stuck hot coals on them.
But he was so much more beautiful… majestic up close. She had encountered him before… but to have him save her— she was lost for words… wasn’t like she could talk anyway.
‘You’re going to be alright, ma’am.’ He said, his voice stern, deep and positive. Giving him a weak smile as they lifted her up in the truck, the soon passed out once again once out of her sight.
***
She had awakened in the worst pain she could ever imagine. Cardi ached so bad, she could not move. ‘Ah.’ Her voice was still partially gone, her throat hurt and the lights were so damn bright.
Blinking enough times to make out her surroundings, she took note that she was in the hospital, and what she went through the other night was not in fact a dream but real life. She carefully looked over to the left to her table was covered in flowers and cards. They looked fresh and alive.. so she couldn’t have been out for a long time. What a relief.

There are tons of Greater Boston's references I miss by knowing nothing about Boston, but not gonna lie, realizing after the fact, through tumblr posts, that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck ARE best friends in real life might have been an even bigger "w h at" thing for me that the floods or the Charlie stuff.
Also there is the fact that now I cannot take any Matt Damon or Ben Affleck's posts as anything else than Greater Boston fanfic. Like yes i knew the actors beforehand vaguely but i've never been invested in actors before. But now they're characters from one of my most favourite podcasts ever. Look at real life, making a AU where Matt Damon lives....

welp. [tumblr I literally n e e d you to let us have custom emojis] anyway ben affleck smoking dot jpg
40k in 10 days I guess 🎉 uhhh yeah idk this is the result of sprinting every day and splitting the words between projects. I'm shifting to editing now. I started at least one new wip every day (mostly fanfic oneshots!! nothing too wild!) and with a lot of those drafts majorly finished, I can start to clean them up
as for original fiction, the main one that called to me this past week is an old previously abandoned fave called Spell Check about a witch who works at a helpline for spells gone wrong and a caller who never gets her spells right
I'll keep plotting for that while editing the fanfics, and just kinda coast on accomplishing the numbers part already lol
