the fallen prince shields his far-reaching thoughts in the languid dance of lingering wisps of smoke from a cigarette, exhaling the last puffs before stubbing it out on the railing, and finally formulating an answer.

truthfully, he hadn't expected one of the least bellicose sins to venture a move against the infernal judge, jury and executioner, not publicly and not even for a prince of the ars goetia (there are rules, appearances and politics to uphold, after all, even in hell); in fact he did not begrudge ozzie's inability to contrast satan's decree and that rueful mockery of a trial - and, in a show of good will, stolas nods graciously, and reaches towards the other's broad chest to thread long talons delicately through the tufts of feathers in an idle gesture that is, perhaps, a sweet and wordless reminiscence suggestion of intimacy and indulgences.

Some interesting tidbits from WHC

Unlike his brothers, Slaanesh does not reside in the Realms of Chaos. His throne in the Six Circles of Seduction lies vacant, for the Dark Prince is imprisoned in a twilight sub-realm between Hysh and Ulgu known as Uhl-Gysh, the Hidden Gloaming. How he got here is no mystery – but a plan enacted in vengeance.

Though he is caught in this hidden pocket of existence – lost to his followers and invisible to his fellow Chaos Gods – Slaanesh’s influence is still felt keenly throughout the Mortal Realms. He draws his power from that most mortal of afflictions: excess. Whether that be a gourmand’s quest to taste the most extravagant delicacies, an artist’s drive to create a sublime work, or a duellist’s desire for perfect form.

Morathi-Khaine unwittingly accelerated this process in her pursuit of apotheosis, releasing the twin daemons Synessa and Dexcessa when she dived into Slaanesh’s gut for more aelven souls. The pair are living shards of their patron, and they roam the realms laying the groundwork for his return. (Synessa is referred to as a "she" in the 2023 battletome; this is probably an error).

Their presence and profligate debauchery transform the field into a phantasmagorical paradise, an agonising prelude to the carnival of ecstasy and violence that Slaanesh will usher in when he finally breaks loose from his impossible prison.

The most bellicose of Slaanesh’s champions is Shalaxi Helbane, a Keeper of Secrets struck by an all-consuming obsession – to utterly humble all the enemies of the Dark Prince in single combat. Like all greater daemons of Slaanesh, Shalaxi possesses a Supernatural Grace, deftly dodging incoming blows with minimal effort. As a Paramount Hunter they will seek out the greatest foe available, intercepting enemy heroes even as they attempt charge into combat. (Shalaxi is referred to as a "she" in 40k and as a "they" in AoS).

Ripred was on his way home when he detected someone following him. The rat slowed, casually, ears flicking, and released a slightly more aggressive breath to identify who it was that was stupid enough to stalk the Raging Rat. He relaxed only marginally when he realized it was Ares, Gregor's bond. Ripred turned, waiting patiently for the bat to arrive and say/ask whatever he needed that he had followed Ripred all the way out here for. The bat was just recovering from his brush with the plague, but was getting stronger everyday and the doctors encouraged him to fly as much as possible, so it could also just be that the bat was testing his strength by flying out here, although Ripred doubted it. He flicked his tail, waiting as the bat finally came into view, and soared towards him. To the rats surprise, Ares did not slow down as he coasted in for a landing, and Ripred even had to take a few steps back to avoid being impaled by the bats massive claws. Ares seemed unperturbed by this, and folded his wings neatly against his body. Ripred decided to excuse it, since the bat was recovering from his brush with death and probably just couldn't land well yet. “Ripred.” the bat greeted. “Ares.” Ripred returned. He made to start walking again, hoping to walk and talk so he could get home quicker, but Ares massive wing snapped out, blocking his path. “Id like a word.” Ares purred smoothly. “It will only take a moment.” Ripred frowned at him, but slowly lowered himself into a sitting position, facing that bat. “Yes?” he drawled, annoyed. 

Ares claws glinted in the light of the gems that sparkled over their heads, holding the light of torches that had already long since passed. Ripred cocked his head in interest. “I was hoping to speak to you about the manner of my bond.” Ares started conversationally. Ripred was no fool. There was a distinct bite to the bats voice, though he tried his best to sound falsely polite. “What of m-the pup?” Ripred asked. Ares regarded him with his sharp brown eyes, and Ripred knew then the bat had dropped the pretense. “You mistreat him.” Ripred flinched back in surprise. That was not what he had expected. “I beg pardon?” “you may beg all you like,” Ares said, waving one wing dismissively. “I do not have the time, nor the patience to hear it. But I do have the time and the patience for my bond. And he informed me of your quest for the cure. For me. And he informed me of how you spoke to him. How you treated him. There are no secrets between us. I know.” Ripred coiled his tail around his feet. Ah. There was a look in the bats eyes that Ripred had not seen in a very, very long time. Not since the bat had been bonded into the royal family and escaped his punishments. This was the most Feared and Hated bat in the Underland. This was not the Ares that Prince Henry had bonded to, not the bat Aurora and Luxa knew as their friend. This was the Bellicose Bat, know as the Bane of Bats, a behemoth in size and strength. Ripred was facing a whole new opponent now. “What of it?” Ripred asked back, slightly clipped. Ares still examined him with that unflinching gaze, wings almost relaxed, claws tapping the stone beneath him. “I understand you care for him,” The bat began. Ripred did not bother to open his mouth as the bat plowed on. “And I also understand your adverse feelings towards showing it.” the bats mouth tightened into a line. “But I do not understand your belittling and degrading of him. Your beating, both verbal and literal.” His claws glinted. “From now on you do not make my bond hurt any more than he already has, understood?” Ares intoned, voice still the same easy tone as before, but harder than stone. “He does not belong to the Underland.” Ripred said carefully. “It will get him killed.” Ares wings flared, the only warning Ripred got before the bat launched himself at him. Ripred dove, but he was too late. His head hit the stone with a sickening crack that reverberate down his spine. The bat loomed over him, claws digging into his tail and shoulder to keep him down. His face was twisted in a snarl. “He belongs to me.” the bat hissed. “I am not against tough love. So long as there is genuine love in the equation. You make that clear, it is fine.” the bats wings shifted slightly. “I was also made aware that you and Gregor are on better terms now?” Ripred dipped his head, the only movement he allowed himself. The bat eyed him carefully, then slowly slipped off him to where he had been seated before. Ripred sat up, eyeing his tail. It oozed blood, but not much. The bat had not done too much damage. “It will heal.” Ares informed him dismissively. “I did not inflict too much pressure.” Ripred felt a renewed cold shiver slide down his spine, but he merely nodded. “Have I made myself clear?” The bat asked, switching subjects as though they had just been discussing the weather. “Yes.” Ripred intoned, voice low. “It was never- I never meant to hurt him.” Ripred finally finished lamely. He did not know why he had felt the need to clarify, to prove himself to the bat, but Ares eyes shone with recognition. “Good.” Ares said, opening his wings. “See that you do not.” And he took off, gone within seconds. The only indication he had ever even been there the throbbing of Ripreds head and two pools of blood, dripped off the bats talons, on the floor. The Raging Rat shook himself and started running for home.

Day Seven: Keleanohoanaʻapiʻapi!

Keleanohoanaʻapiʻapi was born into Hawai’ian royalty during the fifteenth century; her father, Kahekili the Great, was the ruler of Maui. He was a notedly bellicose leader, and his campaigns impoverished his people, inspiring the name of Keleanohoanaʻapiʻapi’s brother, Kawaokaohele, “Our Impoverished Days;” Kawaokaohele would notably fight no wars during his own reign. Keleanohoanaʻapiʻapi grew up into not only a well-known beauty, but a woman well-known as a skilled surfer. Her first husband, Lōlale, was a high-ranking Prince on Oahu; accounts vary on whether this was merely an unhappy political marriage or a full-on abduction, but, nevertheless, Keleanohoanaʻapiʻapi seems to have found little joy living inland on Oahu. She and Lōlale had several children, but Keleanohoanaʻapiʻapi ended their marriage - according to one chant, after having rediscovered her love of surfing on a visit to the sea.

Her second marriage, to Kalamakua, the Chief of coastal Halawa, was much happier. The two had one daughter, the famously beautiful Laʻieloheloheikawai, who as wife of King Pi’ilani would become one of the matriarchs of united Maui. Keleanohoanaʻapiʻapi herself would live on in chants, legends, and sagas, as princess, politician and perhaps the earliest female surfer to be known by name.

Raja Kirik - Phantasmagoria of Jathilan

“The Phantasmagoria of Jahtilan” is a music performance by Raja Kirik in collaboration with singer Silir Wangi and performer Ari Dwianto. This project investigate the Jathilan horse dance, a folk trance dance popular in Java, Indonesia, as a way of regaining strength despite defeat. Jathilan is an acronym of “Jarane jan tjil-thilan”, which translates to a horse that dances irregularly. The current form of Jathilan developed after the Java War (fought between Javanese rebels and the colonial Dutch empire from 1825 to1830) as a folk practise to grapple with the defeat by the Dutch Empire and the devastation caused by the civil war between the Javanese population and the Javanese aristocracy who supported the Dutch. In Jathilan people use stick horses made of bamboo as a form of appreciation as well as an expression of support for rebel leader Prince Diponegoro's horsemens who fought bravely against the Dutch colonial forces. Despite the actual defeat of the rebels, Jathilan itself always depicts an imaginary victory of the local rebel cavalry against demons, monsters, or the colonisers. This heroic performance therefore has multiple purposes: to entertain, to encourage, to heal, and to unite people against oppression. Raja Kirik’s “The Phantasmagoria of Jathilan” is an artistic exploration of the Jathilan tradition, re-interpreting its musical, vocal, and dance forms. Syncopated electronic rhythms combine with the metallic percussion of homemade instruments that is as trance-inducing as it is bellicose. Beautifully monotonous singing in a captivating repetitive melismatic style weaves through lilting melodies that gust out of makeshift wind instruments. With frantic, seemingly endless forward propulsion, the music of Raja Kirik inhabits a wide emotional breadth, cycling from disappointment to anger to loneliness. During the piece, the dancer embodies various heroic characters, such as Bujang Ganong, Menak Jinggo, Hanuman, or the non-fictional hero prince Diponegoro. Darion Mograine is the leader of the Four Horsemen and the former Highlord of the Knights of the Ebon Blade. The son of Alexandros Mograine, one of the Highlords of the Knights of the Silver Hand and the original wielder of the Ashbringer, Darion was a paladin of the Silver Hand, and later of the Argent Dawn. After his father was murdered by his brother Renault Mograine, he came into possession of the corrupted Ashbringer, and tried to save his father's souls inside. During the First Battle for Light's Hope, Darion used the sword to kill himself, destroying the Scourge forces and releasing his father's soul. Following the battle, the Archlich Kel'Thuzad raised him as an undead, while the Lich King made him the Highlord of Death Knights of Acherus and the ruler of Acherus: The Ebon Hold, once again wielding the corrupted Ashbringer. After defeating the Scarlet Crusade in the Scarlet Enclave, he and his fellow death knights broke free from the Lich King's control during the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel and founded the order of renegade death knights known as the Knights of the Ebon Blade. Under the leadership of Darion, the Ebon Blade spearheaded the attack against the Scourge alongside the Argent Crusade during the war against the Lich King, temporarily allied with them to form the Ashen Verdict and topple the Lich King.

Lady Jaina Proudmoore is the daughter of Daelin and Katherine Proudmoore, and sister of Derek and Tandred. She is considered one of the finest mages in all Azeroth and the most powerful human sorceress alive. She is the Lord Admiral of Kul Tiras, the former leader of the Kirin Tor of Dalaran, and of the port-city of Theramore. Trained as the personal agent of Archmage Antonidas, the late leader of the Kirin Tor and Dalaran, she was sent to investigate the plague of undeath with Prince Arthas Menethil, her childhood friend and one-time romantic interest. She witnessed the first stages of the fall of Lordaeron during the Third War firsthand and, guided by a mysterious prophet later revealed as Medivh, Jaina rallied what survivors she could find and fled across the sea to Kalimdor. There, her expedition forces joined together with the night elves and the New Horde and defeated the Burning Legion during the Battle of Mount Hyjal. The human survivors then founded the port city of Theramore, joining the Alliance led by Varian Wrynn, while maintaining peace with the Horde for several years. Shortly after the fall of Deathwing, the Horde led by Garrosh Hellscream destroyed Theramore. Jaina managed to escape with her life, but the experience transformed her, making her more bellicose and even altering her appearance. Following the death of Rhonin during the attack, and fulfilling a prophecy made by the dragon-mage Korialstrasz, Jaina took the fallen mage's place as leader of the Kirin Tor and head of the Council of Six. In spite of personal tragedies, she attempted to maintain the Kirin Tor's neutrality during the Alliance-Horde war. After the Horde-aligned Sunreavers aided Garrosh to steal the Divine Bell, Jaina exiled the Sunreavers from her city during the Purge of Dalaran and aligned the Kirin Tor with the Alliance. Following the Battle for the Broken Shore, the Council decided unanimously to re-admit the Horde into Dalaran for the greater good. Furious, Jaina left the Kirin Tor. Following the War of the Thorns, Jaina returned to her homeland of Kul Tiras in the name of the Alliance but was imprisoned for treason by her mother at the suggestion of Lady Priscilla Ashvane. After Ashvane's own betrayal was discovered, Jaina reconciled with her mother and brought the lost Kul Tiran fleet back home. Katherine stepped down as Lord Admiral of Kul Tiras and named Jaina in her stead, re-pledging their nation to the Alliance cause and to the Fourth War.

Accora, the Hyweller Matriarch, leads the most powerful Clan in all of Awyrfang, and by that fact, she is the leader of the entire Kingdom. Of the Four Kingdoms, Accora has been the least giving when it comes to the Academy, for she sees very little use for such an establishment. Her people- Wolfen- are bellicose people- always have been. It's the only way they've managed to protect what they have- otherwise, Wolfen-kind would be extinct. An Academy that teaches Peace? Silly, useless, a waste of resources in Accora's opinion. Despite her true feelings, she won't be stopping her young people from attending. After all, it will be nice to have some feet on the ground in Rhosynmora if this thing falls apart like she truly believes it will.

Despite being married to the Queen of Awyrfang, Parris Hyweller is little more than a soldier- high-ranking among the other Wolfen of his Clan, of course, but still just a soldier. He does his best to carry out Accora's wishes and protect his family and Kingdom at all costs.

LORD-KING ANMER MIDDEN-HEL, {30}

Anmer Midden-Hel is the seventh Midden-Hel King of Brandelbellan and his rule is now entering it's seventh year. Like every Midden-Hel King since the first, Anmer is part Bog-Devil and thus bears a good deal of bog vegetation on his person and visage. He tends to wear a partial mask to obscure the greenery of his face, revealing only his singular Mortal eye. For now, the establishment of the Academy is the least of Amner's worries as he's under great pressure by his Court to choose a Queen. He does have his dark eye on one or two maidens, but in all honesty, Anmer's not in much of a hurry to make such an important decision.

QUEEN HAIM ENELLOR, {39}

Wizardess Haim Enellor finds herself the sole ruler of Glamorgane following the sudden death of her husband- the Last Enellor King. She has been something like a steward of the throne for two years now while the Royal Council takes great pains to carry out an investigation against her- to prove that she murdered the King. They keep meeting dead-ends, however, because Haim, a weilder of Magick, covered her tracks quite well. However, it's only a matter of time, as she appears to be slipping mentally- taking in strays and forcing them to play her dead sister, having lengthy conversations with herself, walking the battlements in her barefeet, falling asleep in strange placese about the palace. Eventually, she will slip-up and be executed for her crime. Until then, Haim is feigning no knowledge of the investigation against her- or else she truly forgot? And occupying her time with "resting" in her room, choked with sandalwood incense.

KING WENTHLIAN FLORIMEL, {27}

The Florimel King plays his part well. Wenthlian is known as a fair personality- generous and supportive when it comes to his new Queen, Diamandis. He seems very reserved to the outsider- calm and unflappable as marked by generations of Florimels before him. But there is something strange about Wenthlian. Diamandis cannot or will not see it. He seems, at all times, to be calculating and taking the measure of those around him. He leaves a great many (those who have met with him in person) with the feeling of unease. If only his thoughts could be heard- but then again, from the look in his eye when he becomes deeply lost in his thoughts, perhaps it's for the best that they remain unheard.

QUEEN DIAMANDIS FLORIMEL, {25}

Diamandis is anyone's idea of a Queen- gentle, giving, beloved, elegant and beautiful. More than that, she's a great mind and a steadfast Pacifist. Her strong anti-war sentiments led her to write a tome on how to achieve Peace throughout the continent, how to change one's thinking on the subject, to reject the notion of bloodshed as inevitable. The book, called "The Book of Fair Thought" has been quite polarising, but with the support of her dear husband, she has been able to see the manifestation of her dream- an Academy dedicated to Peace. Diamandis has every hope that, through The Lillium Academy, she will be able to save many lives and spare many others from the trauma of war. Diamandis will be splitting her time between her royal duties and her role as the Headmistress of the Lillium Academy.

Monument to Prince Volodymyr

“As a prince of Kyiv, Sviatoslav’s son, Volodymyr, was less bellicose and ambitious than his father but turned out to be more successful in achieving his goals. (..)

Volodymyr took the throne in 980. He spent the first decade of his rule on warfare, ensuring that the realm created by his predecessor stayed together. Following in Sviatoslav’s footsteps, he again defeated the Khazars and the Volga Bulgars, reasserted his power over the Viatichians in the Oka basin, and pushed westward to the Carpathians, taking a number of fortresses from the Poles , including the town of Premyshl (Przemyśl) on today’s Polish-Ukrainian border. His main concern, however, was the southern frontier, where the Rus’ settlements were under continual attack by the Pechenegs and other nomadic tribes. Volodymyr strengthened border defenses by building fortifications along the local rivers, including the Sula and the Trubizh. He settled those areas with prisoners of war and subjects from other parts of the realm. Rus’, born of conquest, now sought stability by defending its borders instead of attacking the frontiers of other states.

Under Volodymyr’s rule, Kyiv’s relations with Byzantium were also changing. Whereas his predecessor on the Kyivan throne, Helgi, allegedly had sent troops against Byzantium to obtain trade preferences, and Sviatoslav did the same to acquire new territory in the Balkans, Volodymyr invaded the Crimea in the spring of 989 in pursuit of marriage, if not love. He besieged the Byzantine town of Chersonesus, demanding the hand of the sister of Emperor Basil II. A few years earlier, the emperor had asked Volodymyr for military assistance, promising the hand of his sister Anna in return. Volodymyr sent his troops to help up the emperor. But Basil was in no hurry to fulfill his promise. After receiving this slap in the face, Volodymyr refused to turn the other cheek and instead attacked the empire. His tactic worked. Alarmed by the news of the fall of Chersonesus, Basil dispatched his sister Anna to the Crimea. She arrived with a retinue that included numerous Christian clerics.

Volodymyr’s request for marriage was granted in return for an assurance that the barbarian chieftain (as the ruler of Kyiv was regarded in Constantinople) would accept Christianity. Volodymyr went along. His baptism would start the process of the Christianization of Kyivan Rus’ and open a new chapter in the region’s history. Once the wedding party had moved back to Kyiv, Volodymyr removed the pantheon of pagan gods, including the most powerful of them – Perun, the god of thunder – from a hill above the Dnieper and put the Christian clergymen to work baptizing the population of Kyiv. The Christianization of Rus’ had begun – a long and difficult process that would take centuries to complete. (..)

Volodymyr choose the religion of the strongest country in the region, in which the emperor was no less important an ecclesiastical figure – more important, in fact – than the patriarch. By choosing Christianity, he gained the prestige of marrying into an imperial family, which promptly elevated the status of his house and realm. Volodymyr’s choice of Christian name sheds additional light on his reasons for accepting Christianity. He took the same name as the emperor, Basil, indicating that in Byzantium he had found a political and religious model to emulate at home. A generation later, Kyivan intellectuals such as Metropolitan Ilarion would compare him and his baptism of Rus’ to Emperor Constantine and his role in establishing Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire.

To be sure, the Byzantine political and ecclesiastical elite helped Volodymyr make the “right choice”. They were unhappy with the marriage but not with the conversion. The Byzantines had begun sending missionaries to the region soon after the Rus’ Vikings attacked Constantinople in 860. Back then, Patricarch Photius of Constantinople, the same clergyman who left us the description of the Viking attack, had sent one of his best students, Cyril of Thessalonica, to the Crimea and then to the Khazar kaganate. Along with his brother Methodius, Cyril devised the Glagolitic alphabet to transcribe Christian texts into the Slavic languages. The two men subsequently became known as the apostles to the Slavs and gained sainthood. Attempts to convert Kyivan rulers were undertaken long before Volodymyr’s conversion, as attested by the story of his grandmother, Olha, who became the first known Christian ruler and the first Christian woman in Kyiv named Helen. Apart from propagating Christianity, the Byzantine elites began to gain influence over the “barbaric” rulers and peoples, who had no fancy genealogies and little in the way of sophisticated culture but a great deal of destructive power.

After Volodymyr’s conversion, the patriarch of Constantinople created the Metropolitanate of Rus’, one of few ecclesiastical provinces named after its population and not the city where the bishop or metropolitan would reside. The patriarch reserved for himself the right to appoint metropolitans to head the Rus’ church – most of them would be Greeks. The metropolitan in turn controlled the appointment of bishops, most of whom would come from the ranks of the local elite. The first monasteries were established using a Byzantine statute. Church Slavonic, the first literary language of Kyivan Rus’, initially functioned predominantly as a translation tool, making Greek texts understandable to local elites. Volodymyr issued regulations defining the rights and privileges of the clergy and gave one-tenth of his income to the church. Christianity in Kyivan Rus’ began at the top and moved slowly down the social ladder, spreading from center to periphery along rivers and trade routes. In some remote areas, especially northeastern Rus’, pagan priests resisted the new religion for centuries, and Kyivan missionaries who ventured there would end up dead as late as the twelfth century.

Volodymyr’s choice would have a profound impact on his realm and on the history of eastern Europe as a whole. Instead of continuing warfare with Byzantium, the new Rus’ polity was entering into a alliance with the only surviving part and continuator of the Roman Empire and thereby opening itself to the political and cultural influences of the Mediterranean world. It would prove fateful that Volodymyr not only brought Rus’ into the Christian world but also made it part of Eastern Christianity.`Many of the consequences are as important today as they were at the turn of the second millennium.”
