The Atlas Paradox - Olivie Blake
2/5 - better than I remember, no real character arcs to speak of, odd character decisions, weak worldbuilding, major second book syndrome
If I had been reviewing this after I read it the first time, this review would have been more harshly critical than this one is about to be. With that in mind, let's begin!
This book feels like it exists to fill time between the first and the third books of the trilogy. And while, in one sense, that's what all second books do, this is by no means a Catching Fire of second books if you catch my drift. A year goes by over the course of this book with an extremely questionable timeline and essentially nothing of note happening. It's not that there isn't plot happening, it's just that the plot is minimal in comparison to the amount of writing.
Some of this problem is due to the way the characters act. It feels as though every character is making decisions out of left field and none of them undergo any significant character arc, with the exception maybe of Reina, who begins to believe in her own divinity. Each character makes choices with no apparent justification or an incredibly overwrought emotional reaction. Reina storms out of a room or scene at least once every time she has a POV chapter. I also did not appreciate Nico and Parisa's hook-up, which appeared to happen just for the sake of something happening between them.
Each of the characters is in their own heads and not really interacting with each other, despite living in the same house, and, frankly, it makes it seems like six small novellas are taking place, rather than one cohesive plot. Characters are cryptic for the sake of being cryptic and wildly dismissive of everyone's abilities as though the entire first book hadn't been spent establishing that each of them are exceptional.
The biggest point of confusion for me was the worldbuilding. I was under the impression this was a magical realism story - a magic world within and alongside an ignorant mortal world. This idea is disproven in this book, with the knowledge of government contracts, but at no point is this every expanded upon. The sudden presence of characters and institutions beyond the Society also throws into sharp relief how little we actually know about the characters. We know them in a setting that places each of them under duress, emotional or physical, and as anyone who has ever functioned under extreme stress can tell you, that is not an accurate depiction of people's actual personalities and behaviors.
Overall, the novel is just lacking. The one character I did want to see more of was Libby, and we only got the barebones of her self-confidence arc. They also basically sacrificed Belen at the altar of ?? something, which to me was a disservice to her character,

"But if you think about it, nobody asks for any of this. What they’re born into. We just get what we get, and that’s a tragedy in itself. Everybody’s got one." - Callum Nova, The Atlas Paradox by Olivie Blake
(It's been a while since I've read a full-length novel and I am happy to finally read. Anyways, for me, this sequel was kind of a letdown? The pacing was relatively slow like only tidbits of new information that can progress the plot were given and too much prose? New characters were introduced (yes, I like Belen) to only die off at the end. Spoilers, btw. Oh, and I have so many goddamn questions. The POVs are good but they're kind of grating to read (esp. Libby's sorry) EXCEPT for Mr. Callum Nova. Hate him in the 1st book and now, I quite like him. His POVs are interesting and I am looking forward to it especially his initiation rite which is the most interesting of them all (The "I hurt" part of him talking to himself got me). I like how the romances seem interwoven with each other, in a way. This is a messy rant so 3/5. Will definitely read the 3rd book just so I can find out how the author will tie all of the details together and how will she conclude everything.)

There's this kind of hybrid artstyle in comics lately that I wanna learn how to do (i just wanna stare at them coz its too pretty). Would it be an insult to call it hybrid? Hybrid in a way that its more anime-ish/cartoon-ish...but still very much in comic artstyle. It's very stylized too, and it's more softer and expressive on the face, and I love it.
I don't know if its a real thing, or I'm just seeing things in my fave artists in comics

Other notable artists that I like: (1) Patrick Gleason for giving us RSOB & for drawing kids who look like kids; (2) Joelle Jones for lineart; (3) Christopher Mittens for inking and panelling; (4) Otto Schmidt for character dynamic & fight scenes; (5) Gabriel Picolo for nostalgic DCAM feels
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
#Since my anatomy keep reverting back to anime gdi#Also love yasmine putri for her ethereal coloring and fine lineart...but her coloring style is too realistic to be stylized#and the way she draws cover is like a painting with beautiful compositions!#Also love joelle jones' lineart but again too many realistic lines on the face but its still pretty and distinctive of her style#sadly i'll always associate her art with the character assassination of talia during tom king's run...#and jones draw talia so beautifully!!!! She draw women so gorgeous...its almost thirst trap!#My go-to art reference when i wanna draw dc characters#Inking and panelling is christopher mittens...he is so artistic and creative on his inks!#patrick gleason gave us goliath & og dami-squad so i love him...and the way he draw kids are so adorable!#Batman#Dc comics#Dc artist masterpost#For references will add when i see other art i like#Otto scmidt imo could tell a personality through poses alone its beautiful...he also have this dynamic and fluid fight scenes that i like#Scmidt can also be anime...but he's more cartoon for me...like the newspaper caricature style?#The notable artist are those i love but is not hybrid-anime imo lol#I finally get why I like Gabriel Picolo its coz his style is very DCAM and its awesome! But its not anime so changed it a little#sams with Starbite...very DCAM but in terms of style im also more for picolo#Simome di Meo...! I thought it was Jorge Jimenez but its not! Also awesome works#Also Ramon Bachs!!! Also similar feels with Patrick Gleason...so style wise...im more for gleason art#Im a dami-centric reader and fan...so its obviosuly artists i encounter while enjoying or painfully reading up to Dami's stories

My Silly Audition Article for Screen Rant
Damian Wayne, son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al-Ghul, has come a long way from the disrespectful Robin who shoved past Batman and Alfred on his way into the manor. In his recent appearances, Damian has demonstrated his affinity for the cowl. No longer Talia’s secret child infiltrating Batman’s operations, Damian is now a dedicated and multifaceted, trustworthy member of the Bat-Family.
Damian was once the spiteful Robin who fought Tim Drake in Crime Alley in Fabian Nicieza, Marcus To, Ray McCarthy, Guy Major and Sal Cipriano's Red Robin #14. Now, he is now the trusted babysitter of Lizzie Prince, Wonder Woman’s daughter, in the Trinity Special by Josie Campbell, Belen Ortega, Alejandro Sanchez and Clayton Cowles. He’s the artist and creator of his own comic book in Joshua Williamson, Simone Di Meo, and Steve Wands' Batman and Robin #1. Damian is the only one who stuck with Batman throughout the Gotham War - as far as he could.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robin Takes Lizzie On Patrol In Gotham
In the Trinity Special, Damian demonstrates both sides of Batman's weakness for rambunctious children as he lovingly teaches Lizzie to tie her shoes, then takes her on a dangerous mission in Gotham. Helpless to stop Lizzie from joining the fight against Killer Croc, Damian flexes his ‘Batman’ chops by delivering ‘Superhero Lessons.’ The similarity between ‘Robin and Wonder Robin’ and the original dynamic duo is further emphasized by his lessons being entirely ignored. After Damian’s new sidekick kicks Croc hard enough to need medical attention, he brings her home to nap. This is Damian’s first taste of being a mentor.
This isn’t the last time Damian and Lizzie fight crime together. The Trinity Special, which collects and expands on the adventures of Damian, Lizzie, and Jon Kent from #3-5 of Tom King, Daniel Sampere, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles' Wonder Woman, also features scenes from a possible future. In these flash-forwards, Damian is Batman. In a fittingly dramatic version of the Bat-suit, Damian embodies Bruce Wayne’s brooding, dry humor, and versatility as he defeats the trial of Skill on Themyscira. As Goddess Nike declares herself “Victory” and challenges a fully realized Damian, he replies reliably, “and I’m Batman.”
Damian Is Forced To Learn Empathy Quickly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DC has been publishing more of their heroes’ home lives in books like Batman and Robin. As Bruce explains to Batman's brutal counterpart, Zur-En-Arrh in Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jimenez, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles' Batman #140, he is strongest when he is not “just a Batman”. Damian, having trained with assassins first, struggled to develop the conscience and empathy required by Batman to fight in Gotham. In volume 3 of Batman and Robin, both Bruce and Damian develop their empathy and teamwork as they cope with the loss of Alfred and of Wayne Manor.
These experiences demonstrate that Damian is developing the softer skills that make Batman a compassionate hero at a younger age than Bruce was able to. His tactical, detective, and martial arts abilities make him an effective Robin, but the earlier introduction to love and its utility in crime-fighting will give him an edge in being a better Batman. His sibling dynamic with Jon and Lizzie will also give him an edge on the original. With skill, empathy, and plenty of time to develop both, Damian has an edge on the original Batman, and can only get better.
