two main things are:

the way he treated his coworkers (not "friends". friends dont treat each other like that). it came out recently that he was genuinely borderline abusive to tommy, who was 16 when dream was 21, to the point tommys friend phil (at the time was 32) had to step in. tommy said he had to write in his diary to "not provoke dream, its not worth it, it makes me sad" and jack (like a year or two older than tommy) says that he "fucking hates dream". dream also frequently took credit for his coworkers accomplishments, especially tommy. you might have seen this tweet?

this was because dream was taking credit for tommys success and phil had to step in bc tommy messaged him saying that he was worried dream was genuinely mad at him. after this dream said it was "just a joke" but i think its bc he just realised he had nothing on philza

this story is not just about two boys getting together. its slow growing, has miscommunication and misunderstanding and characters who dont behave in healthy ways because its about being human.

it talks a lot about the complexities and frustrations that come with being disabled in an ablebodied world and needing to unpack your privileges as someone who isnt disabled.

if you dont like miscommunication (something that literally all humans do) and learning and growing from our mistakes and assumptions then this media isnt for you. this isnt something only maya does. taichi and kohei do this too. other side characters do too. these characters arent one dimensional because this story is much more than the live drama.

theres volumes before and after this that the drama will likely never touch and im so disappointed by the ableism and misogyny running rampant after episode 7. maya isnt some evil woman coming in to just fuck up the dynamic of the couple. this story has always been about more than taichi and kohei getting together.

theres another character later on who is an obstacle between the hearing characters and those who are d/Deaf or HoH and i just know that some of the people criticizing maya for her intentions here will love that character for those same complexities because hes male.

disabled people dont owe you kindness or the benefit of the doubt when we are tired of people babying us or trying to help us just to feel better about themselves. and many of the people hating maya for making assumptions about who taichi is are doing the exact same thing when they hate her and call her evil, irredeemable and selfish.

the drama adaption also is not doing her justice and has leaned way too hard on her aggressive reaction to taichi instead of the walls that have been built to protect her wellbeing from ablebodied people wanting to feel good about themselves or to baby her because poor disabled person :(((

saying a character has no nuance, can have no redemption and is a plotting bitch in the episode they were literally introduced in is frankly an insane take

He drops the gloves with a rival teams goon that absolutely boards the fuck out of Gale a la Scheifele/Evans hit. Normally we love a good Goaltender fight but this hit was too scary. people still take notice bc they're like look at Bucky defending his BOY

John is a very Seguin type character. As I mentioned he has a similarly nude sports illustrated photoshoot. But also very messy party phase with Curt much like Segs and Marchy

With Monika I think one thing I always remember with her is that she’s very good at saying stuff she doesn’t seem fully believe. A lot of her act 3 discussions is her acting as if she doesn’t care, that she doesn’t feel guilt, that she truly thinks the others don’t matter. But we know that just isn’t the case. If she never cared then why would she have a protein bar, why didn’t she just delete them all immediately, why did she still have them tucked away? She wants to seem like she’s this all in control mastermind but she just… isn’t. She’s doing so much to try and relate with us but no matter what there’s the part of her that cares that she simply can’t get rid of. She can make her hanging joke, but it’s mostly for us and partially to convince herself. “Oh the player probably doesn’t care, I shouldn’t either, why should I care, the player don’t think they’re real and well they aren’t, but I am.”

For me I rarely call her a full asshole not because what I think she did was right (she fucked up), but because I can constantly see her contradicting herself no matter how hard she tries to be other wise. To me, especially in side stories, Monika wants to SEEM like she’s perfect but she knows in her heart of hearts that she isn’t, that she isn’t capable, that she will never be perfect. But damn it, she has to be. Or else then no one would care about her. Monika definitely seems like she has an ego but it honestly feels so performative for me, especially when in side stories she spends so much time self flagellating herself and her issues as “silly” or “stupid”.

That’s a lot of text and idk if it’s coherent, basically yeah I just think base game Monika tries super hard to seem like some sort of uncaring bad bitch but she isn’t as much as she tries to be. In side stories she’s coming from a good place and in base game it’s a desperate place. Theres a bit of malice there, but it’s not completely her motivator.

And yeah I agree that she wouldn’t automatically become a better person, she’s got a long way. But the first step is to acknowledge the fuck up and that’s what she does after being deleted and being pissy for a bit. And also above all the stuff about her previous guilt that is subtly shown throughout act 3. God she especially realizes some shit after seeing Sayori be in her same position. So in a post game story, she knows she cares about the others and feels guilt. How does she fix it tho? Definitely agree on the self sabotage part, considering Monika doesn’t even let herself be reinstalled in act 4. Her worse enemy is herself. And how can she realize that if no one is able to call her out? Certainly not herself if she thinks it’s the “right thing” to do. It’s all very fascinating and tragic really. But shows how important it is to have other people who are equals to you and can call you out or talk to you, which side stories Monika has in abundance.

I just sent this ask so fast cause I really do enjoy some good conversations about Monika that have so much nuance. She’s so interesting cause of her multitudes.

Monika is a gaslighting queen, even if the person who she is gaslighting is herself lmao. She is definitely not a mastermind, or prefect, even though she wants to appear this way. And she is also not dumb, she knows this. But she keeps trying to convince herself otherwise. I've made a post in the past talking about how obvious her denial is in act 3, and i dont think i need to explain it either, if you play the game and listen to her dialogue its like hilariously and embarrassingly easy to see. There is a slight resentment present for the girls in base game, but its also very apparent that she cares a lot for them even as she tries to convince herself she doesn't.

I wouldn't exactly call her an asshole either, more like... a person who can be sort of shitty sometimes. As for her ego, I do think she truly believes she knows best, and she will follow through with her plans initially without taking into consideration the others, but after she starts second guessing herself quite a lot. Her ego is very contradictory if that makes sense idk

That part about Monika being her worst enemy sums it up pretty well I'd say

i mostly depict the worst in these two's relationship which is sad. they are each other's rocks!!! morgan is nick's best friend in many ways. however, i think people overlook how much of a bitch (affectionate) nick is in early season one bfjdgjhdbghj and these two are literally introduced in the story through a shouting match, so!

the tldr; they love each other, but argue constantly. morgan is overly paranoid after glenn's death and this causes her to be too protective. nick remembers what his dad was like, what morgan was like before glenn passed, and wants that more relaxed lifestyle back (and moreso, wants his mom to be happy again). its bad, guys! they do not get along very well! they still do everything together though and nick is only half unwilling about it.

longer spiel/some talk about nicholas as well under the cut:

ive probably talked about this a lil bit before (haunted by mnmoms morgan and nick thoughts) but morgan is very much extremely paranoid about nick getting hurt. despite evidence to the contrary, she blames her and glenn's laidback rocker lifestyle for glenn's death, and in the wake of his passing, throws herself very hard in the opposite direction. i could do a full long spiel about exactly why i characterize morgan this way (tldr; the only way i can see her being the type to marry both glenn and jodie is if she really values stability and safety), but this is about how it affects her relationship with nick! i can get into that another time!

nick loves his mom a lot, and like his canon iteration, a lot of what he does is for attention. morgan is a single mother with a busy and tiring job in this au (she's a stock manager at a nearby grocery store, lol), nick is a grieving teenage boy who wants his old mom back and his dad, period, back. theyre prone to conflict, but it comes from a place of nick wanting her attention and morgan just desperately needing him to be safe. they cant quite see eye-to-eye (ohhh the morgan and samantha foils) and a lot of resolution would be found in them both just... taking deep breaths and talking reasonably. however, theyre both grieving and struggling to find ways to cope.

like glenn, theres no real resolution to this conflict. morgan makes more progress than him, because i just. desperately. need that. please. i love nick so much. but ultimately, like in canon, this is cut abruptly short by the trial. and unlike canon, it takes a lot longer for that aspect of nick's arc to conclude. but hey! at least morgan has a son who listens to her now! hes just as anxious about safety as she is, in fact <3 (inflicting myself with horrors)

morgan does, very genuinely, love nicholas just as much as she loves nick. he very quickly becomes the center of her world. its just a very... odd adjustment period. understandably.

i didn’t really realize until this year just how deeply ingrained in me the urge to lie is. i will just say fucking whatever if its what i think the conversation needs. (or i should say i used to. ive been really making an effort to not say ANYTHING that i dont mean and its fucking hard but its getting easier fs) this is a bit of a double edged sword because like, i AM very good at talking to people and being friendly & this skill definitely stems from the years and years of people pleasing, but at the same time i have to really hold myself accountable if i want to be impeccable with my word, because the natural instinct to tell a lie is SO strong.

my parents would punish me for honesty so i very quickly learned it was better to lie and not get yelled at (which didnt even always work lol) and as a result have had to learn how to be honest with even myself. it was SO deeply ingrained that when a truth was difficult or painful i would just lie to myself instead of facing the music. ive gotten a lot better about being honest with myself about my feelings, my recent breakup helped me realize that i still had a lot of work to do in that respect and ive been doing a lot of introspection about it. but what im really struggling with is the impulse to say things that i think will help the conversation flow even if they arent true, and in my effort to NOT do this i seem to have become… too honest? i dunno. ive always hated fakeness and niceties of that kind so sometimes I’ll say something in response thats super honest but like….i did not need to say that.

unfortunately the usual case with 90% of yuri especially with new series

usually plays upon overused tropes making everything abt it lack any uniqueness to it

it is such an epidemic its forced himejoshis to become resigned to accepting these things into their hearts and even pretending its the shit when really its just shit 😭

its hard to give examples bc this makes up almost all yuri i can think of

#2: Non-Existent yuri

A series with really gay girls but they dont ever explicitly say theyre in love.

ex. dungeon meshi

Most himejoshis will on in the hill of saying they love subtext but we all know and especially themselves know that isnt true

#3: Yuri that is unserious as fuck

Theres a lot of drama yuri out there but it is always so fucking unserious it just ends up being funny as fuck instead

quite often this type is also associated with erotic media. But theyre so goddamn unserious it dosent matter how sexy either of them are, it immediately makes them so unsexy the minute they start talking.

#4: Yuri where one or sometimes BOTH of them are dead 💀

extremely minor plot points or concurrent small interactions between side characters thats kind of gay as shit

theyre either EXTREMELY GAY or just a little gay theres no inbetween (either way, people will lie one way or another to say its really good)

despite the fact this yuri is quite ephemeral or absolutely nothing some ppl will still call this media wholly yuri for whatever maniacal reason

#6: YURI THATS TOO FUCKING SHORT

Unfortunately the best type of yuri also happens to be too goddamn short (usually limited to oneshots, anthologies, manga series no more than 25 chapters)
